Pickup Trucks Getting Huge. Got Problem With That?
A FEW MONTHS ago, on an ordinary day in an unremarkable
Costco
parking lot, I was nearly squashed by an unusually large pickup. Thank God I was wearing a mask.
As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.
He didn’t even see me.
Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,
Ford,
Chevy, GMC. They stood out like Percherons in a herd of Shetland ponies.

What is going on here? When did pickups get so big? And why are XL-sized pickups so big now?
I know. Pickup trucks at Costco. Film at 11. Except that in April, U.S. sales of pickups surpassed automobiles for the first time ever—about 112 years, give or take. Trucks and truck-based sport-utilities now account for roughly 70% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.
How we came to be Pickup Nation is a longer story (cheap gas, the Chicken Tax, IRS Section 179, marketing). But this year, to help move the tin during the pandemic, U.S. auto makers laid out a bounty of discounts and cheap financing, including 0% interest for 84 months and deferred-payment plans.
“Pickups without a doubt benefited from the great deals,” said Mark Schirmer, spokesperson for market service providers Cox Automotive. “And the deals were particularly great for consumers buying expensive vehicles.” The data suggest these incentives also juiced a boomlet in XL-sized, heavy-duty pickups, otherwise known as ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups, for private use.
That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.

It seems to be resonating. While sales of Silverado light-duty were off 18.6% in the second quarter, sales of the HD model sales were off less than a point. GMC’s light-duty Sierra was down 9.5%, while sales of our menacing new friend, the Sierra HD, were up 7.6% in the second quarter and 21.5% year-to-date.

don’t break out HD sales from pickups overall. However, Ram’s average transaction price in the second quarter soared above $50,000, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of data from Kelley Blue Book. Ford F-Series sales fell 23% (to 180,825 units) but its ATP was mostly unaffected—$51,688, the highest among pickups.
In July, J.D. Power declared Sierra HD the king of the bro-dozers, placing it first in its 2020 U.S. APEAL Study of Large Heavy-Duty Pickups, which tracks owners’ excitement and emotional attachment in the first 90 days.
“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.

Ask any kid with a crayon. If you draw the box in the middle bigger, you have to make the ones on the end bigger, too.
Which brings us to the 2020 Silverado HD—10 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the previous model. The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET…and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”
So watch yourself at Costco.

2019 Ram Heavy Duty Review: Pros and Cons From 2500 to 3500, and From Diesel to Gas
Pros:
Ram HD offers a truck for every need
Responsive gas and 1,000-lb-ft diesel
Looks great
Cons:
Diesel engines could use eight- or 10-speed transmissions
Diesel trucks are slower than the competition
If “class-leading” towing and payload numbers matter, this is the wrong truck for you
I really feel for pickup truck engineers. Much like American and Soviet scientists during the Cold War, these engineers are trapped in a never-ending cycle of increasing power, payload, and towing figures. And to what benefit? The most you can legally tow across these United States without a commercial license is 26,000 pounds. So what would happen if one automaker just decided not to play those games anymore? You’d get the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty lineup.
Free from chasing segment-leading max payload and towing numbers (the lighter, aluminum Ford Super Duty ought to own that honor), Ram engineers instead adopted a three-pronged approach to improving their three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 and one-ton Ram 3500: Upgraded powertrains, updated styling, and the latest technology.

On the former front, the engines are likely to be familiar to most Ram buyers. A 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 with 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, a powerplant that’s been updated with Ram’s latest cylinder-deactivation technology so it can run in V-4 mode for far longer than before, is standard on the Ram 2500 and 3500, perhaps more important, so is a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic. For those who prefer diesels in their trucks, Ram also offers a new version of its Cummins-sourced 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6. Standard output for the Cummins is a healthy 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque, and it comes paired with a six-speed automatic. If that doesn’t get your juices flowing, a high-output version available on the Ram 3500HD will. Pumping out 400 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque paired with an Aisin-sourced six-speed auto, this turbodiesel is the first in a pickup to crest the four-digit torque mark.
No matter whether you prefer gas or diesel, you can’t go wrong with either. “Who needs coffee in the morning when you’ve got 1,000 lb-ft of torque?” Detroit editor Alisa Priddle asked. Senior features editor Jonny Lieberman agreed, adding that it had “deep reserves of torque, giving off an indomitable Bentley-like feeling.” The high-output Cummins’ pulling power impressed us, but on steep grades while pulling heavy loads, the I-6 could be slow to accelerate—a more modern eight- or 10-speed transmission might help.
Ram’s V-8, as tested in a 2500HD Power Wagon, has so such issues. The Hemi was never a slouch, but the eight-speed breathes new life into the engine. It not only makes the truck faster and more responsive, but it’s also more capable. The Power Wagon’s V-8 felt so capable, in fact, that we overloaded its 10,350-pound max tow rating at the proving ground, hooking the truck up to the rival gas-powered Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD’s 10,500-pound trailer. The end result? The Ram smoked the Chevy and its 15,000-pound towing capacity.
On the styling and technology fronts, Ram’s new Heavy Duty trucks are remarkably impressive. It’s not easy making a big one-ton dually pretty, but somehow Ram managed to make the big, blocky form look almost elegant, with wide-flared fenders and new design language cribbed from the hot-selling Ram 1500. The Ram’s interiors are even better than the exterior designs. Trim-for-trim, Ram beats its rivals not only on design but also on materials, quality, and comfort—especially when you step up to Ram’s Denali-rivaling Limited trim. “Now this is how luxury should feel! Nice wood, metal, and leather details all around the cabin,” MotorTrend en Español managing editor Miguel Cortina said.
Ram remains a leader in technology, too. On the infotainment front it offers three different versions of its Uconnect infotainment system, including a massive 12.0-inch tablet-sized display (though we’ve had a couple issues with this system in our long-term Ram 1500). It’s also the only truck in the segment to currently offer safety features including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a trailer-compatible automatic emergency braking system on each and every trim level.

Ram HD 2500 Laramie Longhorn et Bentley Flying Spur

Lorsque j’ai débuté dans le domaine des publications sur l’auto à la fin des années soixante-dix, je me suis rapidement intéressé aux camionnettes, surtout aux grands pick-up et aux gros véhicules commerciaux. Longtemps, cette réputation de «gars des trucks» m’a suivi. Même si j’ai plus travaillé dans le domaine des autos, il est vrai que j’ai toujours eu un penchant pour les camions. Et ce «mignon défaut» continue de me hanter. C’est pourquoi j’ai vite sauté sur l’occasion de conduire un tout nouveau Ram 2500 pour ce reportage…
C’est fou comment les camionnettes ont changé depuis les années quatre-vingt, une époque où l’on vantait les petites autos économiques et les belles berlines, des segments en perte de vitesse aujourd’hui. Les camionnettes ont surtout pris du coffre. Et non seulement sont-elles devenues de plus en plus grosses, elles sont aussi de plus en plus luxueuse. Tout jeune, lorsque mon oncle Jean Beaucage s’annonçait, je demandais à mes parents de lui dire de venir en pick-up. Il y avait surtout ce pick-up GMC 1957, dans le parc des camions du livreur d’huile à chauffage Beaucage de Côte-des-Neiges (aujourd’hui disparu…ça, c’est une autre histoire). Et quand l’oncle Jean arrivait avec ce GMC, il fallait qu’il me fasse une ballade. J’adorais m’asseoir dans la cabine dénudée avec des carpettes de caoutchouc et une banquette de vinyle incluant le levier de vitesses, un long bras au plancher…Il y avait un six cylindres en ligne sous le capot de ce GMC équivalent à une version 2500 actuelle…
On est rendu très loin de ce véhicule de travail! Le Ram HD 2500 qui me fut si aimablement prêté par FCA Canada était une version haut de gamme Laramie Longhorn, une superbe camionnette à quatre portes avec cabine allongée derrière la banquette d’arrière (Mega Cab) avec caisse de six pieds. Toute la carrosserie de cette camionnette a été redessinée pour 2019-20 mais c’est surtout à l’intérieur que les designers de FCA ont fait beaucoup de travail. Toutefois, avant d’aller plus loin, spécifions que des Ram comme ce 2500 sont plus axés vers le travail que le loisir même si plusieurs acheteurs s’en procurent pour du caravaning. C’est un peu avec cette fonction en tête que j’ai utilisé mon Ram d’essai.

Évidemment, ce qui intéressera d’abord l’amateur de camionnettes, ce sera la mécanique qui se trouve sous le capot. Même si le moteur de base des 2500 est un V8 Hemi de 6,4 litres, mon Ram avait le six-cylindres Cummins turbodiesel optionnel comme force motrice. On reconnait à ce moteur de 6,7 litres la capacité de tirer jusqu’à plus de 35 000 livres grâce à ses plus de 1000  livres de couple mais cette caractéristique se retrouve plutôt dans le plus robuste 3500. La version 2500 possède ce moteur mais «qu’avec» 370 chevaux et 850 li-pi de couple…seulement? Il me semble que c’est déjà amplement suffisant! La seule boîte de vitesses disponible avec le moteur diesel est une transmission automatique plus robuste à six vitesses (le V8 à essence a droit à une boîte à huit rapports ZF renforcée). Comme on peut le voir, mon véhicule d’essai était à quatre roues motrices sur commande. La suspension des Ram 2500 est désormais à ressorts hélicoïdaux à l’arrière avec bras tirés ce qui, selon FCA, devrait améliorer la qualité du confort…mais ce n’est pas exactement ce que j’ai vécu! Cependant, je ne m’attendais pas à une portée de grande limousine d’un camion capable de tirer jusqu’à 19780 livres ou d’accepter 4050 livres de charge dans la caisse.

Mais si l’on passe à l’intérieur, c’est là que l’on voit tout le travail que les designers de FCA ont accompli. Il est vrai que je conduisais la version Longhorn de grand luxe. Mais au départ, il faut vanter l’espace caverneux d’une cabine Mega Cab de Ram. Il y a deux sièges à l’avant et une banquette repliable en deux sections à l’arrière (afin de profiter d’un peu d’espace si l’on veut transporter de gros objets précieux dans un endroit au sec). Et derrière cette banquette, il y a aussi un espace de rangement pratique. Mais revenons à l’avant où il y a un tableau de bord magnifique avec une instrumentation complète incluant un centre d’information complet entre les deux cadrans principaux. Si vous regardez les photos, vous constaterez qu’il y a un grand, un très grand écran de douze pouces qui sert tant à la caméra de marche arrière qu’à l’infodivertissement mais surtout au GPS! On trouve sous cet écran des prises pour Apple CarPlay et Android Auto et des prises de courant de 115 volts pour brancher ou charger des outils. Puis, dans le cas du Longhorn, il y a tous ces avertisseurs de déviation de voie, d’obstacles trop rapprochés et j’en passe. Ah oui! Il y a aussi la sonorisation Bose assez impressionnante.

Un petit mot sur la caisse arrière (ce que mes confrères préfèrent appeler la «benne»). Celle qui vient avec la cabine Mega Cab est de six pieds et quatre pouces ce qui suffisant pour ce type de camionnette. Cependant, ce que je n’ai pas encore compris de FCA (un constructeur pourtant capable de créer des accessoires originaux), c’est qu’il n’a pas encore ajouté des accessoires facilitant l’accès à la caisse arrière comme les marches escamotables de Ford ou un hayon déployable à la GMC ou même un simple marche-pied escamotable car ce n’est certes pas facile de grimper dans cette caisse!
Impressions de conduite
Le Ram 2500 est d’abord un outil de travail. J’ai souvent conduit des gros Ram avec une remorque à l’arrière et comme tout gros pick-up américain du genre, il se débrouille très bien en toutes circonstances (en autant que le conducteur conduise avec discernement). Toutefois, j’ai utilisé ce Ram en conditions urbaines encore une fois…avec discernement. Ma seule excursion en ville fut celle chez Bentley Montréal (Les Moteurs Décarie) et ce ne fut certes pas facile de garer ce monstre. Mais j’y suis parvenu. C’est la même chose dans les centres commerciaux. Il faut trouver un grand espace car le rayon de braquage n’est pas serré, vous vous en doutez.
Au départ, une chance que ce Ram était équipé de marche-pieds escamotables sinon la marche aurait été très haute pour accéder au poste de pilotage ou aux autres sièges. Une fois derrière le volant, lorsqu’on met en marche, il faut, avec le diesel, être patient. En effet, à froid, le conducteur doit peser sur le bouton de contact mais il doit attendre, le pied sur le frein, que les bougies de réchauffement (glow plugs) fassent leur travail (environ 10 à 12 secondes) avant que le moteur s’anime (une attente qui ne devrait pas se répéter lors d’un démarrage subséquent durant la même journée). Celui-ci pourrait être plus bruyant mais, contrairement au vacarme qu’il produisait avec la première génération des Ram modernes il y a plusieurs années, Cummins l’a fortement amélioré (en fait, tout le moteur a été revu pour plus de silence et d’efficacité) alors que FCA rendait la cabine de son Ram mieux isolée. Donc, ce moteur, que l’on entend quand même, est beaucoup plus silencieux qu’anticipé. On passe en vitesse grâce à un levier à la colonne (pas de commande rotative ici) et on accélère. Déplacer cette masse de plus de 3000 kilos devrait être laborieux, c’est plutôt le contraire qui se produit. La boîte de vitesses automatique à six rapports (de Chrysler!) est bien adaptée au moteur avec des changements de rapports perceptibles mais soyeux. La direction est un peu tendre mais relativement précise pour un tel gros camion. Grâce à des améliorations apportées au système de freinage incluant de plus gros disques, le freinage se fait rassurant. Les pneus qui équipaient ma camionnette étaient des Firestone Transforce AT qui étaient assez silencieux sur la route et relativement efficaces dans la boue. Car j’ai vraiment fait des sentiers hors-route avec ce gros Ram. Passez en 4 x 4 est un jeu d’enfant grâce à la commande électrique au tableau de bord (quoique je n’en ai pas vraiment eu besoin dans le sentier que j’attaquais). Malgré ses dimensions imposantes, le RAM 2500 s’est déplacé avec aisance dans cette circonstance. Ce n’est pas la version Power Wagon (disponible qu’avec le V8 à essence) mais sa fonction tout-terrain peut vraiment venir en aide pour du travail sérieux (comme sortir un bateau de l’eau ou tirer une remorque sur un chantier de construction boueux) ou même en hiver si l’on est pris dans une neige profonde. En fait, je vois mieux ce camion tirer de remorques pour chevaux ou d’imposantes caravane que de jouer au 4 x 4 dans la boue!
Sur la route, ce gros Ram est très à l’aise avec un moteur qui tourne à peine à 1500 tr/mn en vitesse de croisière. Le moteur ronronne avec un son mélodieux (qui plait beaucoup aux amateurs de poids lourds qui ont une admiration sans borne pour les Cummins). Les reprises sont vraiment rassurantes. La visibilité y est imprenable et tous les passagers voyageront en tout confort. Oui, la suspension peut être sèche (surtout sur les rues défoncées de Laval!) et son encombrement n’en facilite pas l’utilisation en situation urbaine. Toutefois, nul doute que ce Ram pourrait être un véhicule idéal pour tout entrepreneur ou utilisateur qui voudra en profiter autant au travail que pour ses loisirs! Quant à sa consommation, ma semaine en déplacements surtout urbains s’est chiffrée à 15,84 l/100 km alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 14,0.
Si le prix de base d’un Ram 2500 Longhorn Mega Cab 4 x 4 débute à 78 995 $, celui qui m’a été confié avait des options comme la peinture Acier métallique (245 $), les sièges avant en cuir ventilé (100 $), l’ensemble de remorquage avec des caméras tout le tour (425 $), le groupe de sécurité avec régulateur de vitesse adaptatif (1600 $), le groupe Longhorn avec sonorisation de 17 haut-parleur, écran des 12 pouces, radio XM et marchepieds rétractables (2900 $), la boîte auto à six rapports 2155 $), le pont arrière antipatinage (525 $), évidemment, le moteur diesel Cummins (7295 $), le toit ouvrant vitré (1425 $), éclairage supplémentaire (110 $), jantes spéciales (950 $), crochets brillants (150 $), taxe fédérale pour la climatisation et les frais de transport et préparation de 1695 $, on en arrive à une facture finale de 98 660 $...encore une fois auquel il faut ajouter les taxes provinciales et fédérales.
La superbe Bentley Flying Spur à Montréal
Cette semaine, j’ai aussi eu l’invitation de Bentley Montréal (des Moteurs Décarie) pour y voir la première grande berline (devrais-je dire limousine) Flying Spur de Bentley. Rappelons que cette incroyable voiture britannique (dont la marque appartient au groupe Volkswagen) est mue par le W12 du constructeur allemand de 635 chevaux vapeur (635 ps veut dire pferde stark, un terme allemand qui se traduit par force de cheval ou chevaux-vapeur pour vous et les deux mesures sont équivalentes) qui lui permet de passer de 0 à 100 km/h en 3,8 secondes et d’atteindre une vitesse maximale de 333 km/h.
Je pourrais vous en parler pendant des heures mais une image vaut mille mots. Notez le superbe travail de design surtout à l’avant et au niveau des feux arrière. Quant à l’intérieur, on y voit vraiment le beau travail auquel les concepteurs «British» nous ont habitué. J’ai déjà conduit l’ancienne version de cette auto en Angleterre lorsque j’ai visité l’usine Bentley à Crewe. J’espère pouvoir revivre ces deux expériences dans un avenir rapproché. Ce serait vraiment «cool»! Ah oui, j’oubliais. Le prix? Il commence à 314 000 $...plus les options personnelles!
