Zi-O 47: (ง •̀_•́)ง
THIS WILL BE FINE.
This episode contains spoilers for the end of Drive, and the liveblog contains me hard-core shipping Gou/Chase and Tsukasa/Daiki. Fair warning.
––––
It’s raining, in the power-plant area where we left off last time. Swartz ‘repeats’ his statement from then, that Sougo has three options.
He can save Tsukuyomi.
He can save himself.
Or… he can become Oma Zi-O.
Swartz is allowing Sougo to have the choice, for once… but not the time to make it.
Red light rises up in the distance, going up and up, a dark wall rising with it. People in the city are tossed to the sky as it pushes them out of the way. A group of monsters and robots appear.
Smash, Guardians, and the Skywall.
Sougo recognizes the Skywall – it may have been in another world, yes, but he… er, accidentally got shoved through the time tunnels wall into the World of Build. So he’s seen it before.
Build’s history was erased. World fusion aside, these shouldn’t be here at all.
The rain has stopped. Swartz can be heard speaking, telling Sougo to “fulfill his mission, as one who was born to be king.”
He laughs evilly, but is nowhere to be seen.
(continued under the cut!)
––––
Sougo’s confused, angry, and resigned expression fades to the book, and Woz’s Recap begins.
They’re fast approaching the future where Sougo becomes the Overlord.
The book does a super helpful job of showing us the deaths of Miharu, Heure, and Ora. Because of course it does.
According to Woz, and his ‘Oma Advent Calendar’… there are three pages left until the end of the world.
Because of the difference in sentence structure, ‘three pages’ is the last part of the sentence. When he says that, Woz looks directly at the viewer.
––––
Geiz holds his phone, which is ringing and not connecting. He’s trying to call Sougo, who none of them have been able to reach. Woz is sure he’s fine, he’s his overlord, after all – but he doesn’t sound so sure.
Junichiro comes out from the kitchen, having made a huge meal for the three. Turns out that Geiz, Tsukuyomi, and Woz have been looking for Sougo all night.
Tsukuyomi mentions that he must be the most worried for Sougo out of all of them.
But he says that’s not it, he’s not worried at all, Sougo’s fine! He’s probably just stuck on the other side of that wall that appeared, and can’t get home.
Geiz offhandedly asks where Junichiro got all these blocks of tofu – the entire meal is made up of the stuff.
The reply? “Well, in the olden days, they say there was so much tofu you could build a wall out of it. So, we can break these walls down by eating them!”
I feel like there’s a cultural saying in here that I’m missing, but it’s a really sweet sentiment on his part, so I don’t even care.
That’s when Sougo walks in, making a beeline for the watch holder. He knew something had happened.
The Build watch is grey, the image cracked.
He knew something had to have happened with regards to Build – he saw that strange wall when he met him in 2017.
Woz tells them that it’s called the Skywall, that it was from Build’s history, accompanied by footage from episode one – of Build and Ryuuga riding that absurd bike along the top of the wall. But with the ‘work’ his overlord has done, that history shouldn’t exist.
Sougo turns, taking Tsukuyomi by the wrist, and starts pulling her out into the lobby. Everyone’s telling him to stop, Woz asking if Swartz had contacted him, and Tsukuyomi saying that Sougo has been the one Swartz is after the whole time.
Sougo knows that, now. He should have realized sooner, should have realized that Swartz has been watching him his entire life. Which is exactly why, as Geiz points out, he shouldn’t be going anywhere!
Sougo ignores that, asking Tsukuyomi to come with him – asking ‘Alpina’ to come with him.
Much to her surprise – she only just learned that was her pre-amnesia name a few days ago, so how could he know it?
Because Miharu is dead. Because Miharu’s dying wish was for him to take her to the future. But he might not be able to grant it. He takes her arm again, and they leave the shop.
Back in the kitchen, Junichiro looks at the watch tower, frowning. The camera turns to the holder, and focuses on the Build watch.
––––
In a damaged street, Smash and Guardians are rampaging. Geiz shows up to herd people out of there, and engages the Smash. One of the Guardians gets tossed to the ground in front of him.
Geiz: “Woz, why are you even here?!”
Woz: “Well, why are you here?”
Geiz: “…Eh, killing some time before Zi-O turns back up.”
Woz: “Mind if I keep you company?”
They stand back to back, upgrading into Revive Fury and Ginga Finaly respectively, and get to work.
––––
Sougo and Tsukuyomi approach a certain stoic photographer.
She’d like Tsukasa to take them to ‘that place’ again, to where she used to live. She can’t get there on her own.
The Time Mazins don’t allow for travel to different time axis, after all.
Sougo brings up that they may be different timelines, but they’re not entirely separate, either. They’re very closely tied together, arne’t they?
Tsukasa agrees.
That’s when Sougo makes the internal reveal, that Swartz told him that he’ll have to choose between his own time, or Tsukuyomi’s.
Going by her shocked expression, he hadn’t told her this before.
Tsukasa pulls his ‘voice of experience’ card, saying that they might learn things they didn’t really want to learn.
Tsukuyomi says they have no choice.
Sougo needs to know. He’s not making a choice without all the information – not this time. He’s had it with being uninformed.
This is too important for them to go into without knowing everything that they can.
...Fine then. Tsukasa’s willing to take them along, but he’s got two warnings. First, they might not actually have a choice. Second…
There’s no bananas allowed on this little field trip.
Uh. What?
––––
Geiz and Woz launch a double-finisher; Ginga Finaly’s gravity attack holding the mooks in place for Revive Fury’s slash. As they explode… everything… slows… down…
The riders manage to turn around, and yup, sure enough, there’s a trio of unevolved Roidmudes.
The Drive Ridewatch glows briefly, and the color shatters away.
Switching to Revive Gale and Ginga Planet, the fight starts back up as Swartz strolls in. They can fight all they want, but there’s not going to be any end. Not now that the world is already ending, now that the only thing that can change this is the choice Sougo makes.
He strolls back out, leaving Geiz to question just what the hell Swartz is making Sougo do.
––––
2058, the home Tsukuyomi grew up in.
Sougo and Tsukuyomi find tiny Alpina’s room – and she immediately tries to go on the ‘offensive’ when she sees them, same as last time anyone came here. She flings her hand out to pause them, but they dodge. Frowning her little baby frown, she asks who they are.
Tsukuyomi tries to calm her, saying that they’re not trying to ‘intervene.’ She’s her, from eleven years from now, but she doesn’t have her memories, and they just want to know some things. Sougo asks if Alpina can tell them what will happen to this world.
A young man in black appears, as he will always be so good at doing. He’ll tell them.
Tsukuyomi immediately tries to go on the offensive, pulling out her Faiz Phone X and aiming it at Small Swartz, but he’s not intimidated.
He tells them that this world is going to disappear soon, but he’s going to save it.
He’s going to save it by destroying all of the other worlds, each and every one of them.
The last line is heard from outside – Swartz and Alpina in view in one window as he says it, and then we see Sougo and Tsukuyomi in another after.
(Tsukasa is probably watching from outside, frustrated. That’s not how that works! That’s not how any of that works! He would know!)
––––
2019.
Woz and Geiz are still fighting against the roidmudes, when the ground starts to shake. Fuuto and Yggdrasil Towers emerge into the wrong city. A group of Elementary Inves and Masquerade mooks appear shortly after.
––––
The Double and Gaim watches lose their power.
Junichiro peers out from the functional area of the kitchen, a look of concern on his face.
He knows more of what’s going on than he’s let slip. I just know it.
––––
Armored footsteps make their way between mooks. A figure in black and purple armor comes forward.
Mashin Chaser says that he will defeat the Kamen Riders.
Geiz, given the events of the past few days, naturally assumes that they’re up against another Dark Rider.
Don’t group him with the Kamen Riders. He’s a grim reaper, and he will surpass the riders.
To which I, a Drive fan, have a general reaction of NOPE NO NUH-UH I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS!!
Mashin Chaser clenches a fist, and along with the mooks, restart the fight against Geiz and Woz.
––––
2058.
Back at Tsukuyomi’s childhood home, we hear more exposition. Child Swartz says that there are many worlds ‘within’ this one, and that it’s unreasonable for only this one to fall. So he-
HE IS NOT CHILD SWARTZ.
HE IS ADULT SWARTZ.
He’s willing to destroy all of the other worlds. If he does that, then this world will survive.
(Tsukasa voice in the distance: Cool motive, still murder, and that isn’t actually going to work.)
Also, of course he could make himself look like his child self. He’s Another Decade. What’s the main part of the Kamen Rider Decade power set, as given by the belt?
Taking on different appearances.
Tsukuyomi says this is absurd, how can he think he’d get away with that?
He smirks, calling her out. She’s going on about morals, and yet she’s pointing a gun at a child?
WAIT WHAT
Yup, he’s Child Swartz again – still, actually. Sougo figures that he’s probably using his powers to create illusions.
Sure. Let’s go with that.
He has one more question for Swartz, though. How will he destroy the worlds?
It’s simple, really. He’s going to merge them all into one. Each world has it’s own Kamen Riders. If he can consolidate the riders, than the worlds will become one, as well. Then, he only has to annihilate that one world.
(Tsukasa voice in the distance: Merge the worl- I already did that! It didn’t go well! And hell, I’m pretty sure it’s been a single world since I was active! If you’re going to be ‘Another Me’, do your damned research!)
Tsukuyomi asks if that’s why he had Sougo do all of this – why he had him collect the powers together.
Swartz, being Swartz, doesn’t care about anyone elses opinions. As he walks off, Sougo has another question. What will he do when his sister becomes more powerful than him? If she’s stronger, than she could be a great help.
That makes him furious. Her? Become stronger than he is? That’s ridiculous! (He shifts to his adult appearance.) If that were to happen, he’d take her memories and banish her. Only the strong should be king – only he should be king!
He lashes out, hitting Sougo and Tsukuyomi with a blast of energy.

2019.
TUNE: CHASER COBRA!
A single attack from Mashin Chaser takes out all of the mooks, and knocks Geiz and Woz out of their transformations. He drops his own, and ohhh my Drive fangirl heart is breaking. It really is Chase, it’s him, he’s here and oh god this is going to be HeiGen Final all over again isn’t it.
Chase tells them he’s a Roidmude, a mechanical lifeform created by Krim Steinbelt. Geiz and Woz both recognize that name, saying it means he’s a friend of Drive.
Geiz asks if he knows Shijima Gou, Kamen Rider Mach.
SO I GUESS OVER QUARTZER IS CANON.
THIS IS FINE.
NOT LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD HAS TO WAIT UNTIL JANUARY TO SEE IT OR ANYTHING.
Chase, in his always stoic manner, says he’s never heard that name. That in his world, there are no Kamen Riders. He rushes in to punch Geiz.
Geiz manages to catch his hand, though, saying that Chase is being inconsistent. Why is he attacking them, then?
As Chase growls out that it’s because they’re Kamen Riders, he pushes forward, knocking Geiz to the ground.
Geiz picks himself up. “If we’re not supposed to exist, then why are we your enemies?! Even if history changes, you know who you are! That you’re a Kamen Rider, and that you know Shijima Gou!”
Chase hesitates. “Shijima… Gou…”
(Toei, don’t do this to me, don’t-)
Chase holds his head in pain, as he remembers.
An underground parking garage, in mid 2015. Chase, pushing away from the wall he’d been thrown into. Entering his by-then retired Mashin Chaser form to stop Tenjuro Banno from bringing an axe down onto the prone, untransformed Gou. Gou holding Chase in his arms, being given the drivers license and signal bike that Chase had gotten while they worked together. Chase running, sparking, and using the explosion of his death to take Banno out.
Gou screams his name.
Chase cries out in pain, falling forward. Woz comments that the distoritions in space and time must be growing, and he and Geiz take off.
They leave Chase behind, on his hands and knees, all but screaming.
They also leave me, an avid shipper of Gou and Chase, all but crying.

2058.
Child Swartz corners the running Sougo and Tsukuyomi, saying that he can’t forgive her defying him.
She points the Faiz Phone X at him, and when Sougo tells her that she can’t, she says… She says that he’s going to destroy the world. That they can save so many lives if… if they just kill him now.
The same things Geiz once said about Sougo.
She keeps the gun outstretched, her hand trembling, for a moment, before she loses her nerve.
Child Swartz says that he knew she was his little sister, however… as he shifts to his adult appearance, continuing to raise the question of is this Swartz an adult or a kid, he says that anyone who stands in his way will die, and fires another blast of purple energy directly at her-
Only for Tsukasa to jump in, and take the hit, glaring at Swartz from behind the flames before he is finally knocked down.
Swartz calls him a useless hindrance – as a dimensional wall opens.
Daiki emerges, shooting at Swartz with his Diendriver. Swartz takes off, and Daiki looks in the direction of the other three.
Sougo and Tsukuyomi run up to the fallen Tsukasa. She asks why he would do that.
It’s a struggle to say anything, but he manages to answer, holding onto her arm to look at her. Weakly, in pain, Tsukasa tells Tsukuyomi that they can’t afford to lose her.
His grip fails, he falls back to the ground, and stops moving.
––––
2019.
Geiz and Woz find themselves in a back alley, finally getting a moment to breath. Geiz comments that their enemy isn’t from an Another World this time. Woz says he’s from a world without Riders at all – that when Sougo and Geiz were gathering the watches, they were removing the original riders, and thus the opponents they fought were now undefeated… and now they’re all here. Just in time for the watches to start breaking.
Geiz wonders why they’re breaking in the first place, why now, and then theres the skywall and those towers…
Woz posits that it’s likely tied to the time-space disturbances. Geiz points out that would put Sougo right at the center of it all, along with Tsukuyomi.
Woz thinks he might understand his overlords intentions, now.
Aaaand that is a whole lot of monsters up in the sky, including a very familiar looking purple manta ray and a long, black dragon.
Guess the Ryuki watch is done for.
––––
2058.
Tsukuyomi wishes she knew why Tsukasa gave his life to save her.
Daiki walks up, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly, saying that they’ll just have to ask him, now won’t they?
Sougo looks appalled. How could they?! He’s dead.
Sougo. Sougo, Sougo, Sougo.
What did you do immediately before using Zi-O II for the first time?
You rewound time, reversing Geiz’s death.
What treasure did Daiki take last time we saw him?
The Zi-O II Another Watch.
“I didn’t want to use my treasure like this, buuut…” Daiki pushes the switch, and time reverses over Tsukasa, undoing all the damage and dying, leaving him lying there, unharmed.
The first thing Tsukasa does when he opens his eyes? Looks over at Daiki, just saying his last name.
“Hey, Tsukasa. You just died. Are you able to eat sea cucumber now?”
FFS DAIKI THIS IS NO TIME TO FLIRT!
Also, please note that while at first, both Tsukuyomi and Sougo are watching Tsukasa as he gets up, Sougo looks aside at Daiki at that last line. I don’t know if Sougo sees that as the flirting it definitely is, but he definitely knows it is NOT the time for that. He is giving Daiki the most ‘wtf’ expression I have seen on this dumb kitties face in a long time.
Tsukasa asks if Daiki turned back time, and is probably wondering just how much trouble they’re going to get from the den-liner team for this.
He did just save your life, but this treasure, uh, has a bit of a side effect… a very painful case of ‘mad with power’.
Like, Daiki is telling them this as he’s in pain, right before losing the fight to not become Another Zi-O. But now he’s got one last treasure to take… Tsukasa’s life.
Daiki, you’ve used that line before, too! Calling Tsukasa your treasure, saying that he’s yours ‘to defeat,’ you did both of those in your own finale! And, I really feel like I need to repeat myself here. THIS IS NO TIME TO FLIRT!
I have never been more pissed that this time axis is so damned washed out than I am right now. Why?
Tsukasa just got Sougo to hand over his watch. His watch.
Kamen Ride! Decade!
He looks red, because everything is so dim here, but Kamen Rider Decade engages Another Zi-O II in combat… as Decade’s fight music starts up.
––––
2019.
A dimensional wall opens, Sougo and Tsukuyomi running through first, Tsukasa getting thrown through, and Daiki following shortly after.
Daiki’s kinda pissed. Didn’t Tsukasa get his power as a Kamen Rider taken away recently?!
He did. But waaaay back in December, he stored half of his power in a certain Ridewatch, that he gave to Geiz in lieu of the Future Ghost watch he depowered.
Yeah, Daiki’ll admit he’s impressed, and turned on, but only half of Decade’s power isn’t going to be enough to defeat him.
Tsukasa’s definitely smirking under that helmet, saying he’ll be fine.
Another Riders can only be defeated by their respective Rider. Decades power is turning into other Kamen Riders.
Tsukasa pulls out a new card.
KamenRide! Zi-O!
Sougo has no idea what’s going on – where did he get that?! HOW did he get that?!
(I want to meet AR!Sougo so bad. I just really need to see what, in all the worlds, ‘World of Zi-O’ could possibly have been.)
So, Sougo may or may not have the gist of what’s going on, but whether he does or not, he pulls out the Grand watch. It’s a nice shortened version of the transformation – it includes all the transformation calls for phase one, stopping with Decade, but has the full backdrop summon with the statues and door. Tsukuyomi runs out of the way as they start coming out of the ground, which is a nice touch. They skip the full mini-figure sequence, thankfully. (We don’t need another Decade Complete transformation up in here!) But he finishes pretty quickly, and goes off to fight Daiki as well.
All three are in the open, now. Sougo pulls out Kiva’s sword for a few slashes, before giving up on that and tossing it to dissolve away. (Oh, look, the Skywall’s in the background.) Then he pulls out Fourze’s sword – the one from COSMIC STATES, because there’s no kill like overkill. (Oh, look, there’s Fuuto Tower.) Tsukasa had been swapping in and out of the fight, but at this point, he just gets out of the way. Sougo lands a few blows with that, tosses it aside, and pulls out Drive’s Formula Cannon. (Hey, Yggdrasil tower! Nice to see you!) A single shot from the cannon – which has been known to blow sizable chunks off of buildings – is what knocks Daiki out of being Another Zi-O II.
Finally, finally, that stupid watch is destroyed.
Daiki’s sulking over losing his treasure.
Tsukasa drops from being Zi-O!Decade to being just regular Decade. “Oh, man, Daiki, you’re just always asking for trouble, aren’t you? Come on.” He reaches a hand down, to help pick Daiki up.
Daiki ignores it, pushing himself to his feet, because he is one of the most tsun-tsun of all tsunderes in Kamen Rider stubborn. He thinks Tsukasa owes him a little gratitude. To be fair, he’s not wrong.
But before Tsukasa can say anything, Sougo stiffens. He drops to his knees as his transformation cancels itself, the Grand watch dissolving into lights.
Sounds of monsters come from behind them.
From one set of stairs, theres a shot from the preview, of the Orion Zodiarts and the Shika Inves (Deer Inves) with a group of mooks. From another set of stairs, the Violence Dopant and the Bison Yummy emerge with another group.
There’s a plethora of those dragonfly-esque Mirror Monsters from Ryuki in the sky, with other Mirror monsters and such flying around as well, giant Makamou crabs and some creepy spiders crawling up the buildings…
Just monsters. Monsters, everywhere.
Tsukasa, still in his Decade armor, says that he gets the gist of it.
Sougo gets it, too. It really is the end of the world.
Except that’s not the summary Tsukasa’s giving. No. He’s going… to destroy this world.
Tsukuyomi looks over, shocked. Hadn’t he been trying to find a way around that?
Daiki looks over, stunned. They – him, Yusuke, and Natsumi – had to kill Tsukasa last time he went ‘destroyer of worlds’ in order to get him to stop.
Sougo looks over, confused and a little angry.
The bars of the Decade watch close down on him for the endscreen.
(Lower left is the Another Zi-O II watch, upper left is Zi-O, and center is Decade)
––––
The preview opens with Trinity versus Oma Zi-O, with Oma saying something about ‘the power to destroy space and time.’
Next shot is the main crew and Tsukasa in the shop, and everyone is glaring at him.
Then Decade and Diend, side by side.
Zi-O – in front of a startled Junichiro, immediately followed by an over the shoulder shot of Sougo in front of his uncle, from Sougo’s perspective… with the sound clip “I’m… a Kamen Rider…”
Woz Ginga busting up some mooks, and Mashin Chaser punching Another Decade, with Chase saying “To me… friends are…” And that’s his softer Chase voice, not the tones he used while with the Roidmudes, the ones he used while he was Kamen Rider Chaser.
Future Soldier Geiz with a machine gun that he’s firing upward, into the camera, followed by Future Soldier Tsukuyomi holding what appears to be a glowing RideWatch. Geiz is saying that ‘she will save the world.’
Sougo in the cockpit of a Time Mazine, with the audio of him saying ‘The last time travel.’
Trinity charging Oma Zi-O, with the audio of Junichiro saying ‘Be safe.’
––––
Hey, what was it Oma said to Sougo? That “you could never defeat me”? Maybe not as a singular you… in the original timeline, Sougo became Oma Zi-O on Oma’s Day… but in the show, that wound up being the day they got Trinity. >:3
Also…
Hey, Toei, I was kidding with this post, you do know that, right?!
(Gaim, that was almost a full year ago that I made that joke, and look where we are now! They got Gou and Chase, but not Shinnosuke!)

Clash of the Titans
Day 8: Partners Marinette March 2019
Some notes: -This was planned for Day 8: Partners, but got pushed back do to real life interference -Absolute angst -Major trigger warnings (Proceed with caution) -More notes at the end
The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and Hawkmoth's latest akuma was rampaging through the streets of Paris. Throughout the city, water hydrants had started bursting and the Seine itself had lifted up like an enormous snake, ready to feast on pedestrians. Which it had. Technically. As much as being swallowed and spit out a second later counted as being eaten.
Anyways, bottom line was, it was just another day in Paris.
Racing across the rooftops, Ladybug came sprinting by, a blur of red as she made her way towards the akuma. Up ahead, atop the roof of a three-story high building, sat her one-of-a-kind partner.
She smirked and leapt over the street-wide gap between his roof and hers. She wouldn't have made it, of course, if it hadn't been for her magic yo-yo.
Tossing it, latching it, yanking it, and then holding onto it, she sailed up into the sky and landed in a roll beside Chat Noir.
“My lady!” He smiled brightly.
Ladybug smiled and strode over, one hand on her hip, the other swinging her yo-yo. She regarded him with a tilt of her head. “Bonjour, Chat. How’s it looking?”
“As beautiful as ever,” he sighed, fluttering his eyes at her.
She rolled her eyes. “I was talking about the akuma.”
Down below, the akuma responsible for washing out the Parisian streets was riding a miniature tidal wave. She could hear the evil laughter from up above.
Watching them, she searched for any sign of a weakness or opening. With her eagle eye view, she managed to lick out a feminine figure colored a deep blue, like the darkest parts of the ocean. In one hand she held something on a pole, in the other she had an oblong, whitish-colored object.
Rubbing her chin, she hummed and stepped back. “We should get down ther-”
She stopped, having turned to find Chat holding a rose. Again.
“I’ve been meaning to tell you something, my lady,” he said, winking.
She put a hand over her face. “Chat, we don’t have time for this.”
He feigned pain. “You wound me, my lady.”
Rolling her eyes, she put her hands on her hips and gave him one of her trademarked ‘really?’ looks. He smirked and laughed, but she just shook her head and laughed too.
“I could never hurt you, mon chaton. Now, come on,” she said, moving back. “We got a day to sa- Woah!”
She stumbled away from the rooftop as a burst of water splashed against it. Instead of washing away and dripping back over the side, however, it grew in volume. A puddle became a bubble which became a giant hand formed from rolling water.
They got into defensive stances, ready to stand their ground. Not a moment too soon, their opponent rose up and onto the rooftop to meet them. She was young, about their age, wielding a trident made from water and a conch horn.
“Ladybug.” Chat Noir.” She greeted them politely with nods of her head. “I am Oceana, protector of Earth's waters. Hawkmoth demands your Miraculous in exchange for the power to cleans our oceans of human pollution.”
Ladybug glanced at Chat. He glanced at her. They both shrugged and looked back at Oceana.
“Sorry, mademoiselle,” she said, rotating her yo-yo arm, “but that's not happening.”
“What she said!” her partner cried, snapping his baton behind him and raising a hand before him. “But replace happening with ha-purr-ning!”
Ladybug groaned. Chat grinned. Oceana glanced between them. Hawkmoth's symbol glowed over her face and he screamed, judging by the way the akuma cringed.
“Is your power not worth the safety of our aquatic ecosystems?” Oceana asked, rising up on a pillar of water. “Would you not save our world, the real world, rather than this filthy, human one?”
Chat crossed his arms. “Hey, I recycle!”
Oceana glared. Then, she raised the conch to her lips and blew. It rung out, echoing across Paris. The water under her drained suddenly, and it all disappeared over the rooftop ledge before coming back up in the form of a colossal, humanoid shape.
“Very well,” she spoke, eyes blazing cerulean. “Prepare to be swallowed by the depths of my rage!”
Suddenly, Oceana flew backwards and became rooted in the massive, water-made colossus’ heart. It rose higher and higher, making their shoulders droop and mouths drop.
Ladybug pointed over her shoulder. “Uh, we should run.”
Chat nodded, pale as milk. “Yeah."
They huffed it out of there immediately, jumping onto an adjacent rooftop. The one they’d stood on before was covered in a crash of water as Oceana slammed one of her water colossus’ arms down on it.
“So, I hope you’ve got something in mind, my lady,” Chat wiped off some specks of water on his suit. “Because cats really hate water.”
“Huh,” she said, rubbing her chin. “Guess I’ll start bringing a spray bottle.”
Chat blinked. “Wait. Hey!”
She bounded off with a laugh, running an imaginary circuit around the akuma with her partner following behind. The colossus turned slowly, unable to catch up with them. Though, that didn’t seem to matter with Oceana, who raised her conch up and blew into it again. From the water colossus’ back came spouts of water, shooting out at the superhero duo.
Ladybug leapt and dodged, swinging to avoid getting hit. Chat didn’t have the maneuverability to avoid the hits, but he did have his baton to twirl and absorb the hits. Sometimes she was really appreciative that their magic defied the laws of physics.
“I wonder if she can follow both of us,” she mumbled and hid behind a chimney. “Chat, go back! Circle around and draw her attention!”
He ducked under the slant of a roof and gave her a thumbs up. The moment the water spouts slowed to a drooping stop, he raced off. There was another blow from the conch and Ladybug jumped out, wrapping her yo-yo around a distant chimney and swinging about to head straight for Oceana.
A grin grew on her face the closer she got, but it turned into a frown the moment Oceana glanced at her from the corner of her eye. Blowing her conch, the akuma shot a geyser at her, shooting her across the rooftops and down into the streets.
She screamed as she fell, but gasped as Chat came barreling into her, catching her mid-air. It was an awkward tackle, one that left one of his hands close to her rear.
“Hey, watch your hands!”
“Sorry!”
They landed in the street, amongst awe-struck civilians. One familiar one, clutching her phone and dragging her boyfriend with her, came running over.
“Ladybug! Chat Noir!” Alya shouted and Ladybug groaned.
“Uh, not really the best time, Alya.”
“Sorry, LB, but I never catch you after the fight,” she said. “I just needed to ask you some questions. Nino, hold this.”
She handed off her phone to Nino and pulled out a notepad. She flipped through it fervently, asking question after question, not giving her time to answer each. Meanwhile, she caught Chat glancing behind the reporter at her boyfriend. “Hey, Nino.”
Nino blinked. “Uh… you remember me?”
“Yeah, of course I… do... you were that awesome birthday akuma!” Chat grinned anxiously while she facepalmed.
“Bubble akuma,” she whispered.
“That awesome bubble akuma!”
“Really?” Nino rubbed the back of his neck. “I thought that design was whack.”
Chat stared at him. “Is that a good whack or a bad wha-”
“Ladybug!” Oceana’s water colossus climbed over the rooftops. “Chat Noir!”
Alya dropped her notepad and Nino stepped back. She swung her yo-yo and shouted at them, “Run!” Ladybug waved at them. “Get out of here! Go!”
They fled while she and Chat stood their ground, twirling their yo-yo and baton.
“I don’t want to sound fur-rustrated, bugaboo, but maybe it’s you should bring out that Lucky Charm of yours.”
She nodded and threw her yo-yo up. “Lucky Charm!”
In a flash of red, her magic manifested into a small, red and polka-dotted package. It landed in her hands and she looked it over. The front was covered in a plastic window, revealing a case of fountain pens inside.
“Uh….” She scratched her head. “Yeah, I have no idea what to do with this.”
“You always think of something,” he reassured, nudged her with his elbow. “I believe in you.”
She smiled and blushed, but then looked up at Oceana and her colossus. What was she going to do? Write on her? Poke her? Cover her in ink? ...Wait.
She snapped her fingers. “I got it!” She looked to her partner. “Chat, I’m taking point this time. You have to get up close.”
“What about you?”
“Don’t worry about me.”
“But I always worry about you, bugaboo,” he cooed.
Before she could groan, a shadow cast itself over them. They jumped out of the way of the water colossus’ foot and split up. Chat went climbing up a building while she swung up onto the rooftop across from Oceana.
“Hey, over here!” she shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth. “I flush every time I use the toilet!”
The water colossus visibly bristled. Within it, Oceana bared her teeth and screamed, water warbling with her voice, “Do you know how much water you waste everytime you flush!”
She blew her conch and the colossus charged forward, raising one arm that ended with a ball of water, which then grew spikes. She didn’t want to know how sharp the tips of those were.
“Chat!” she called, ripping open the top of the package of pens. “Now!” She swung and the pens flew out.
There was a blur of black and Chat came into view, swinging his baton down. He struck the fountain pens and they cracked and broke and ink spilled out just before hitting the torso of the water colossus.
Oceana gasped and tried manipulating the ink out of her view. It was too late, though, because she’d already thrown her yo-yo, wrapped it around Oceana. Yanking, she pulled the akuma out and the water colossus collapsed.
“No!” Oceana cried out as she lifted a foot and brought it down on her conch.
It cracked and a little, purple butterfly fluttered out.
“Time to de-evilize!” Within seconds, she’d caught it with her yo-yo and let the cleansing powers inside purify it. A second later, she opened it up and let the little butterfly out, now a snow white color. “Bye-bye, little butterfly.”
Holding up the red and polka-dotted box, she threw it up into the air. “Miraculous Ladybug!“
In an instant, it glowed and flared. Scarlet magic pulsed and suddenly a swarm of ladybugs spread across Paris, repairing the damage done and returning everything to the way it’d been before.
The akuma before them was suddenly just a young woman, a little over their age. She blinked and gasped, looking around out of confusion and shock. “Wh-Where am I?”
She stepped over and knelt down, putting a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s alright. You’re safe now. You got akumatized.”
Ocean blue eyes dropped. “Oh….”
She frowned and nudged her shoulder. “Hey, come on. Emotions get the better of us all the time. No one’s perfect. Not even Chat and I.”
“Says you, bugaboo.”
She shot a glare over her shoulder. “Anyways, the point is, it wasn’t your fault.”
The young woman looked down, then nodded slowly. “Thanks, Ladybug.”
“No problem-” A beep from her earrings cut her off. “Oh, dang it. Uh, do you need a lift down?”
A few moments later, she was swinging away from the young woman. She had four minutes left, possibly longer if Tikki held on.
“Ladybug, wait!” Chat came bounding after her, running along the rooftops beside her. “There’s something I needed to ask you!”
She swung herself up and in front of him, landing in a crouch. He slid to a stop and got up, facing her, face flushed a little red.
“Chat?” She tilted her head and tapped her foot. “What is it?”
He twiddled his thumbs and looked at his feet. “Ladybug, I-....”
“Spill it out.” She tapped faster. “I don't have much time before I de-transform.”
“That's good! I mean, I…. My lady, I….” He swallowed and stood up straight. “I've made up my mind. I want to reveal our secret identities to each-”
“No!” she blurted out immediately. “Absolutely not!”
“But-”
“But nothing.” She swiped her hand in front of her, dashing away his words. “Don't you remember? Revealing our secret identities is dangerous! For us and our loved ones-”
“But I need to know!”
She narrowed her eyes. “No, you don't.” Her earrings beeped again. Three minutes left. “Look, I need to go-”
“No, wait!” He grabbed her wrist. “Stay, plea-”
“Chat, let go.” She pulled, but he held.
“No.”
“Chat, I'm serious.”
“So am I!”
“Let go of me! I need to leave, now!” She yanked, but he squeezed.
“No, I want us to know each other, so I can love the real you-”
“That's not your decision to make!” She struggled and he pushed her against a chimney.
“But it is-”
“Are you even listening to yourself!” She was fighting him, wrenching her arms out of his vice grip. Panic was setting in and the third beep of her earrings sent her into a frenzy. “Get off of me!” She kneed him in the groin.
He squealed and wheezed, then fell to his knees, holding his crotch. She stared at him, then ran.
-
“Why would he do that?”
She sat on the floor of her room, knees tucked to her chest. She’d dressed down from her usual attire into her pajamas, ready to sleep away the days events. Though, she doubted she’d get much sleep tonight.
“He made a mistake,” Tikki said, hovering over her shoulder.
“A mistake?” she scoffed. “He- He grabbed my wrists! He wouldn’t-....”
She pursed her lips and swallowed the bile rising up her throat. She didn’t want to blurt anything excessive out. She didn’t want to paint him as a villain or a monster, because she knew he wasn’t one. But every slimy and alarming feeling that he’d dredged out of the pit of her stomach in that moment said otherwise.
She held her knees closer. “Did I do something wrong?”
“Of course not!” Tikki flew into her cheek and hugged her vigorously. “You weren’t comfortable and had every right to leave!”
“I don’t mean about that,” she said. “I mean before that… Did I do something that made him just….”
“It’s not your fault, Marinette-”
Before her kwami could finish, a buzzing sounded nearby. They both glanced over to her phone, which sat on her chaise. She scooted over and picked it up, turning on the screen to check her notifications.
“The Ladyblog is live?” She tilted her head. “But it’s only live when… Oh no.”
She stood up and opened her phone, turning on the feed.
“Hey, Ladybloggers!” Alya’s voice chimed jubilantly. “I’m here at the Louvre, the site of our newest akuma attack! That’s right, two in one day!”
She dropped her phone and glanced out her window. Paris looked calm. Peaceful. Hopefully, it’d stay that way by the time she got to the Louvre.
“Tikki! Spots on!”
-
In the daytime, the Louvre was a beautiful display of French art, from the museums along its perimeter to the glass pyramid at its heart. At night, it was even more so, colored golden against the dark blue sky by the many lamps and lights illuminating the courtyard. However, she could barely focus on the view, her mind a mess of anxious thoughts.
Sighing, Ladybug stood and jumped off, swinging from above to down below.
“Ladybug!” Alya cheered and ran over to her. “You’re just in time, I think the akuma’s inside!”
She gestured at the glowing, glass pyramid and Ladybug nodded. Glancing around, she searched for any telltale signs of her partner. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make out any dark figures in the lights or the shadows.
“Have you seen Chat Noir?” she asked, not meeting her best-friend’s eyes.
Alya shrugged. “Not since earlier when you guys fought Oceana.”
“I’m right here, my lady.”
A chill crept up her spine and she twisted around to face one of the outlying buildings, an obscure figure sitting on top.
Chat Noir stood up and she felt a tug in her gut, like a sudden, light jab at her stomach that made it roll. It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling, the sudden uneasiness that came before danger, but having it occur now….
She tightened her fists and watched Chat descend. She blinked when he landed, unsure if it was the lights or her imagination that made up the stark white of his suit.
He smirked. “S-purr-rised, bugaboo?” Sauntering over, he studied his claws and paid her no mind. “After our last fight I thought I needed an upgrade, so….” He waved out his arms and presented himself. “You like it?”
The rolling in her stomach only got worse. “It’s… something.” She watched him wearily, but then sighed. “Look, Chat Noir-”
“Chat Blanc,” he interjected. “A different color means a different name.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Alright, Chat Blanc. We can talk about what happened later, but right now we need to focus on the akuma.”
She turned to Alya, prepared to give her clear and strict instructions on staying out of the way. However, Chat was suddenly next to her, an arm draped over her shoulder. She jumped and almost pushed him away, but found him pressing himself against her.
“No need for that, bugaboo. I’ve already taken care of it.”
She furrowed her brow and picked Chat’s arm off of her. There was no way he’d taken care of it himself. Neither of them could take Akumas on alone, save for Style Queen, but even then his kwami Plagg had been there to assist her.
Across from them, Alya dropped her shoulders and gaped. “Wait, what? Seriously? Dang it, I snuck out for nothing.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say that.” He took her right hand and held it. Tightly. “I was about to take my lady for a romantic outing.”
Alya gasped and squealed, but she simply stared at him, bug-eyed.
“No!” she shouted and ripped her hand from his. “Absolutely not!”
Anger flashed across Chat’s face as he stood up, but he masked it with his usual, carefree face. “Oh, you wound me, my lady.”
“I said, ‘no’ and that’s final.” She grabbed her yo-yo and spun it. “Go home, both of you-”
“No!” Chat grabbed her wrist. Again.
She flinched and tore it from his hand. Her heart was racing as every gross, slimy feeling came crawling back out of that dark place she’d stuffed deep inside of her.
“Don’t touch me!” she snapped and glanced at Alya. The amateur reporter was staring at them, a sudden alarm in her eyes. She took a deep breath and calmed her nerves before she spoke again, “I don’t want you to... to….” She trailed off, suddenly noticing Chat’s purple irises.
Shocked, she couldn’t back away as he moved towards her. However, Alya stepped in and crossed her arms, making herself a wall.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“She said, ‘no’,” her best-friend quoted. “Look, I don’t know what happened between you guys, but you can’t just push yourself on her, alright.“
“You should stay out of this.”
“No, I don’t think I will.”
She grabbed Alya’s wrist, prompting her to look back at her.
“Alya, you need to leave,” she whispered. “Now.”
The warning in her tone made her furrow her brow. “What? No way. Girls gotta stick together.”
“I’m serious, Alya,” she hissed as Chat stepped forward.
“She’s right,” Chat said, crossing his arms. “This is between me and- Ah!”
The purple outline of a butterfly blazed over his face. Alya gasped and she swung her yo-yo.
“Go! Now!” She pushed Alya behind her and put her yo-yo between Chat and them.
Her akumatized partner snarled and flourished his baton, extending it. “Fine, I’ll get the earrings!”
He twirled his weapon and charged her with a cry. She waited until he jumped into the air, spinning his baton overhead, before she stepped to the side and avoided an overhead swing. As he scuffed the pavement, she brought up her knee into his stomach and pushed him over.
“Chat, you need to snap out of it!” She watched him get up, scowling. “Hawkmoth is using you!”
“Just like you?” he snapped. “I gave you everything and you threw it away!”
Before she could argue, he jumped at with his baton swinging. She pulled an arm up and absorbed the blow, but she was still sent stumbling away.
He came at her again, but this time she threw her yo-yo and wrapped it around his staff. She yanked, aiming to disarm him, but he held fast, which wasn’t the smartest idea seeing as he was suddenly pulled along and slammed into a lamp pole.
She cringed when he grunted, but stayed her ground. Swinging her yo-yo again, she go ready for a second round .
“Ladybug!” She perked up, breath hitching, and looked over to Alya, who stood nearby by the Louvre Pyramid. “His ring! The akuma has to be in his ring!”
“Alya, what are you still- Oof!”
Chat barreled into her, tacking her to the round. She was stunned for a moment, long enough for him to press his staff across her neck, pinning her. “We were meant to be together.” He grinned, but she bared her teeth and grabbed the ends of his weapon. “You and me. Soulmates for lif-”
She brought her legs up and kicked him hard in the chest. He flew off and hit the ground. She jumped back onto her feet and twirled both his and her weapons. “You’re delusional.”
He snarled and glared at her, eyes feral. That tugging in her stomach came back just before he raised his left hand. “Cataclysm!”
Her eyes widened and she retreated as he swiped at her with a clawed hand wreathed in a dark corona. She lunged backwards to dodge his second attack, falling into roll before coming back onto her feet.
She glanced behind her every so often, looking out for anything that she might run into. Eventually, she did find one of the smaller glass pyramids behind her. She was prepared to move away from it before she saw Chat charging her and a light bulb lit in her head.
Standing tall, she let Chat get close before jumping up and over the small pyramid. Landing just around one of the corners, she reached over and grabbed her stunned partner’s wrist, then pressed his hand against the obstruction between them.
The bench was reduced to ash and Chat without his super power. She smirked and performed a judo flip, slamming him on his back.
She reached for his ring. “I’ll take that, mon mino-”
“Cataclysm!” His hand became a fist and the magic of destruction surrounded it.
She backed away immediately, giving him the opening to break free from her hold and get back up. Reclaiming his baton, he grew a smirk. “What’s wrong, my lady? Chat got your tongue?”
She grit her teeth. That shouldn’t be possible. He shouldn’t be able to use it again. Both her and Chat were too inexperienced to use their super powers multiple times. Except this wasn’t Chat Noir. Not her Chat. This was Hawkmoth’s bleached, crazed version of him, Chat Blanc. There was no way she was going to match him, unless….
She gripped her yo-yo and threw it straight up. “Lucky Charm!”
She watched Tikki's magic flare scarlet red and manifest a small, round object. It fell into her hands and she stared at a perfect replica of her yo-yo.
She looked it over briefly before returning her attention to Chat. His shoulders rose and fell with every one of his heaving breaths. He looked vicious. Savage. Like, at any moment he might snap and attack her like a wild animal.
She swung her second yo-yo, flourishing both in radiant pink revolutions.
He bent forward, ready to pounce at her again. However, he turned his attention away from her, and she followed his gaze to Alya. Her eyes widened and she looked back in time to see a flash of sadism and fury in his own eyes.
“It’s them, isn’t it? They’re the ones filling your head with lies!” He crouched and jumped up, clearing the space over her and landing behind her. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of them!”
He broke into a sprint, racing on all fours towards her best-friend. Alya stood frozen with wide eyes, petrified by fear and sudden terror.
“Chat, no!”
She reached out a hand, then glanced at her yo-yos. She looked up at Chat's stark white figure, then at the lamp poles on either side of his path.
She swung both her weapons and threw them out, wrapping them around the poles. Then, with a tug and a hard pull, she launched herself towards him.
She sailed through the air, retracting her yo-yos and extending her arms out. Chat was almost on top of Alya when she slammed into him, grabbing him from behind and holding fast.
They hit the ground and bounced off briefly before colliding with the glass pyramid. There was a shatter and a crash, then they were rolling across glass shards. Chat's Cataclysm-empowered hand gouged marks in the floor, leaving behind growing blotches of destructive magic that devoured the balcony.
Before either of them could get up, the floor collapsed and they fell further before landing in the darkened lobby of the Louvre.
She lay there for a moment, heaving and groaning. Her pained breaths sounded hollow inside of the vacant museum.
Suddenly, she spied movement in the dark and looked over to find Chat on the spiral staircase, or what was left of it. He stood on wobbly legs, supporting himself on the railing. Behind him, the edge of the balcony’s remains cast a shadow over him and the faint, yet illuminating glow of the lights above cast her in clear view.
Exposed, she forced herself to stand up and face him.
“I don't like you the way you want me too, Chat,” she huffed and felt along her side, touching bruised ribs tenderly. “You know I have feelings for someone else.” Adrien flashed in her mind and she gripped her yo-yos tighter. “This… This isn’t going to change anything.”
“I don’t care,” he growled. “One way or another, you'll be mine!”
He jumped off the staircase, baton swinging above him. She spun her yo-yos and blocked his strikes. They went back and forth, exchanging blows. Absorbing blows. Deflecting. Parrying. Countering.
Though the lobby of the Louvre was expansive, it felt cramped as they battled in the dim lighting. Their fight took them across the area, from the staircase to the shops, to the hall, and back to the middle.
Neither of them gained the upper hand for long. Whenever someone got the advantage, the other one pulled a maneuver that brought them back on equal terms.
In the end, it became a brutal war of attrition. That was, until she wrapped her yo-yos around his staff and dragged him close.
They glared at each other, baring their teeth. He pushed her back, up against the escalator and reached up for her left earring. She had a split-second to stop him, and so, she dropped her second yo-yo and grabbed his wrist.
Chat snarled and she maneuvered her other arm to hold his wrist tight before she smashed her forehead against the bridge of his nose.
He yelped and backpedaled. While he reeled, she raised her right hand, still clutching her yo-yo, and clenched it into a fist. Without a second thought, she punched him in the face again.
He would’ve stumbled and fallen over if she wasn’t still holding onto his right arm.
Tightening her grip, she spun him around and pinned his arm behind his back before shoving him up against the wall. Holding it there with her right hand, she grabbed his left and attempted to pry his left hand open.
Chat growled and gave a feral cry as she dug her fingers into his fist. She bared her grit teeth again and let out a heated grunt.
She nearly had his fist open when he shouted, “Cataclysm!”
Eyes snapping wide open in alarm, she moved her hand back. Tragically, it left him an opening to push her back and kick off the wall. She couldn’t recover in time as he spun around and slashed at her.
Claws cut into her indestructible super suit, empowered with a inky black corona that turned scarlet red into dead brown.
She fell on one knee and gaped at the growing hole in her stomach. She felt Chat’s eyes on her back, burning holes into her while she turned to ash.
She closed her eyes and felt tears burning in them, but then cold air touched her belly.
She gasped when ash fell off of her blazer and t-shirt. Raising up her hands, she stared as her super suit crumbled away, leaving behind her bare skin.
Ladybug was gone, and only Marinette was left.
“Her earrings are still here!”
She looked behind her, finding Chat holding his head, as if in pain. Hawkmoth’s insignia blazed over his face as he scowled. “Once you’ve got both Miraculous you can fix it, can’t you? Or make an akuma to do that?”
He looked up at her, then froze. She stared at him, terror turning to dread.
“Princess?”
She scurried onto her feet, heart pounding. She didn’t have her super suit. She didn’t have her yo-yo. She didn’t have Tikki.
“Marinette? You were… Ladybug?”
She backed away, slowly. Then, quickly.
His stunned face cracked with a grin. Laughter bubbled in his chest while despair ebbed in hers. “All this time. You were right there. Right beside me. Behind me. Helping me.”
She looked around, searched for an exit. The balcony was gone, and so was her closest escape route. There were emergency exits throughout the Louvre. The Carrousel du Louvre could lead her out too, but she’d have to get past Chat….
Her breathing was becoming erratic. She needed to calm down.
How could she calm down? Without her Miraculous. Without her super powers.
“Marinette.” Chat was in front of her, stark white in the faint golden lights from up above. “I’ve waited so long to know who you really were.” His hands touched her shoulders and she flinched. A frown crossed his face. “Now I can love the real you-”
She pushed him away and stumbled backwards. “Stay away from me!”
His frown deepened. “It’s not nice to yell at someone who cares about you.”
She eyed his left hand, watching him flex his fingers. She looked around him, glancing back at him every split-second. There was no way she could out run him. No way she could out maneuver him.
There was a glint of light by the escalator. Chat’s baton.
She looked up to the doors at the balcony ruins. If she could take the baton and extend it, shooting herself up….
She turned her attention back to Chat, who reached up to grab her chin. She moved away, then pushed past him.
She ran as fast as she could, heart pounding and lungs burning. She stumbled half way there, but caught herself, only for a weight to slam into her back.
She hit the floor and skid, limbs straining and ribs more than likely cracking. She cried out while Chat hissed and held her down.
“I don't think so, purr-incess,” he whispered in her ear.
She struggled against him, writhing in his vice grip. Tears burned in her eyes, but she forced down the fear in her throat before it became a scream.
“Get off of me!” she roared and elbowed him in the face.
He growled and grabbed her arm. His claws dug into her skin shortly before he pulled them down, drawing blood and severing the cord of Adrien’s lucky charm. A gasp escaped her as the beads scattered across the floor and she bit her tongue to not show pain, neither physical nor emotional. Mustering her strength, she glared at him, then looked to his baton a foot away. She reached for it, patting the ground and straining her other arm.
Chat grabbed it before she could.
“Tsk. Tsk. Naughty,” he purred, tapping it against her head. “A princess can’t escape without her knight.”
“I’m not your princess!” she snapped, a resurgence of defiance giving her strength. “I’m not your lady! I’ll never be anything of yours!”
She watched him out of the corner of her narrowed eyes, waiting for an opening to do something. Anything.
Chat, however, simply sat on her before his face contorted with anger. He stood up and raised his left hand. “Cataclysm!”
She rolled over onto her back and almost crawled away. It was only him jumping back on her, his free hand gripping her throat and his other moving to her face. “If you won’t be mine, then you won’t be anyone's.”
Pacified by fear, she could only choke out a whimper. He smirked and moved his hand away, then leaned in. “I never wanted to hurt you, my lady. I just wanted you to realize what we have.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks. Though anger surged beneath her paralyzing fear, it was not enough to light a fire in her anymore. She couldn’t fight Chat. She was outmatched. She… lost….
“Don’t cry, Maribug,” he cooed, removing his hand from her throat to wipe a tear away with a claw. “I’ll take care of you from now on.”
Every vile and revolting feeling washed over her. She felt violated. Disgusted. Her insides were slimy with revulsion and she wanted so badly for something to deliver her from this horrible place. From this horrible person.
She didn’t want to be his. He was a monster, undeserving of what he wanted….
She looked at him, squinted her eyes. He was in a stupor, his maniacal smile unwavering as he roamed over her figure, searching for wounds and other things in need of tending.
“I’m sorry,” she whimpered, moving her right arm over by her side. “I didn’t want to hurt you, Chat.”
He stared at her, eyes narrowed before they opened with relief. He cupped her face and leaned in. “I knew you’d come around, my l-”
He didn’t finish. She grabbed the side of his face with her left hand and headbutted him. He grunted and she grabbed his left hand, then slapped it against his chest.
Cataclysm spread like a cloud of locusts, consuming the black of his suit. Leather gave way to cloth and a white t-shirt and jacket became visible. He cried out and jumped off of her, screaming his disbelief and outrage.
“No! No! No!” He pawed at his chest and turned away from her. His tail whipped about frantically before it crumbled into ash. His ears turned to dust on his head and his blonde hair fell into a neat, combed style.
There was something in the back of her head, a quiet voice whispering that she’d seen him before. A part of her rationalized it that they might’ve crossed paths in school or somewhere else in Paris.
That part of her died when he turned around.
Adrien Agreste glared at her, looking like a street cat afflicted with rabbies.
“A-Adrien,” she whispered.
Shock gave way to horror. Horror gave way to pain. Her throat closed up and more tears fell down her face. She cupped a hand over her mouth as a choked sob left her.
The sweetest boy she’d ever known, the one she’d proclaimed love for behind his back, was the one who’d violated every sphere of privacy she’d ever held dear.
“How dare you!” he shouted and stalked towards her.
She backed up, crawling away desperately. She didn’t want to fight him. She didn’t want to hurt him. A part of her was still swooning over him, but it was being quickly overpowered by the part that both feared and hated him.
Her hand brushed something smooth and round. She glanced over at her second yo-yo, the one she’d spawned with her Lucky Charm. It hadn’t been destroyed by Chat’s- Adrien’s Cataclysm. She looked back at Adrien before grabbing it off the ground.
He launched himself at her, but she crouched down and threw her elbow up. She caught him in the stomach and he let out a pained “oof” before landing on his back.
She jumped on him and pinned him down. He struggled while she grabbed his left hand. His right clawed at her arms, so she pinned it with her left leg.
“Get off!” he howled, but she delivered a swift punch to his face. He was stronger, but not if she kept him dazed.
She delivered a second punch. Then, a third. And a fourth. Some primal part of her derived a sick pleasure from each collision of her knuckles against his nose. It was only after that fourth one that she stopped, seeing his bloodied face.
Her stomach churned and rolled, but she ignored her unease to hold his left arm down. Then, raising her yo-yo in her right hand, she brought it down.
Adrien screamed from the first blow. And he howled from the second. She blocked out the crunch of bone and the crack of his deteriorated ring.
When the purple butterfly fluttered out, she wasted no time in opening her yo-yo and flinging it up. She caught it on the third fling, but said no words. She had none. She’d wasted them all on her partner’s deaf ears.
A second after she’d climbed off of the love of her life, she let the butterfly go and watched it fly off into the top of the pyramid, then out the hole they’d made. Not a moment after, she threw her yo-yo up and shouted in a hoarse voice, “Miraculous Ladybug!”
She was blinded by a flash and flurry of red, but a minute later, she felt relieved. Healthy. No longer in pain, her body mended and healed by Tikki’s magic.
Speaking of which, there was a glow in her vision as her earrings lit up and her kwami came zipping out.
“Marinette!” she cried and flew to her as she collapsed on the round. “Are you okay?”
Her only answer was a sob and a shake of her head. Nothing was okay. Nothing would ever be okay again.
There was a flash of green from her hand and she only then realized that the Black Cat Miraculous had been restored in her fist. She watched Plagg materialize from Adrien’s ring, then glance around.
“Wh-What happened?” he moaned and rubbed his head, then looked at her, and then at Adrien. “I… He….” His words failed him and he dropped his head. Tikki flew over and enveloped him in a hug as he shook, a sob wracking his body too.
She stared at them and felt a tinge of jealousy. Then, she rolled her head over to watch Adrien regain consciousness.
He woke up with a groan and rubbed his head, fingers running through blonde hair. A mumble left his lips before he sat up and looked around. His eyes fell on her and a smile spread over his face.
“Marinette?”
Her heart shriveled and her stomach tugged. His voice no longer gave her joy.
“It’s you,” he said, laughter under his breath. “It’s really you.”
She rolled onto her hands and knees, intent on leaving and not spending another second with him. Her arms and legs protested, however, and she was left awkwardly pushing herself off the ground.
“Let me help you up, my lady.”
Adrien was striding towards her, sashaying with a flirtatious grin. She swallowed the sliminess down her throat.
She pushed herself up and stood, only to fall thanks to her wobbly legs. Landing on her rear, she squeaked and Adrien faltered, then ran over.
She held up a hand before he could lay a finger on her. “Don’t touch me!”
He looked at her, caught off-guard by the bite in her voice. “Marinette, it’s okay. It’s me, Adrien-“
“I know who you are!” she snapped before she could stop herself.
The sunshine glow that usually surrounded him was gone. He stood in the shadow of the restored balcony while she pulled herself up with one of the roped poles filling the lobby.
She shook her head at his confused face. She didn’t have the words to yell at him. To scream and shout and spill out every furious emotion that burned in her heart.
“You’re just exhausted, Marinette.” He held up his hands in a sign of peace. She narrowed her eyes in return. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
She would’ve scoffed if she had the energy to. Instead, she bowed her head and chose her words wisely. A moment later, she looked up at him and gave him a forlorn gaze. “I gave you everything, Adrien… Chat….” She swallowed and wet her lips. “I… I gave you all I had and you… it wasn’t enough for you. It was never enough for you.”
“But you’re all I nee-”
“Shut up!” The last of her tears welled in her eyes. “Just shut up!” She ran her hands over her head, fingers scraping her scalp. “This is exactly what I’m talking about. You never listen to me. You never respect me. Every time I tell you to stop you don’t and when I want you to leave me alone you just keep pushing because you think I owe you something, but I don’t.”
He stared at her, crestfallen, but not heartbroken. He wasn’t getting it.
“That wasn’t me,” he said. “The akuma. Hawkmoth. He’s the one who turned me into Chat Blanc-”
“No.” She shook her head and let her face contort with rage. “This started a long time ago. You ignored my feelings. My choices. Chased me even after I told you I wasn’t interested, and when you did try to stop you strung Kagami along.” She threw out a hand and let her anger turn into despair. “The list just goes on, Adrien. And it’s not going to stop until you learn to stop acting so entitled.”
Offense crossed his face before he dropped it and took on a sympathetic face. He looked down then, and balanced on the balls of his feet before stepping over to her. She stumbled back, but he outstretched his arms for a hug.
In an instant, she struck him in the face. He hit the ground hard, hand over a bloody nose.
He looked up at her, emerald eyes wide with surprise. She glared back at him, then closed her eyes and shook out the furious thoughts in her head. “Don’t come near me. Don’t talk to me. Don’t look at me. Just… Don’t….”
She turned and took a step away, then another and another. She walked to the escalator and made her way up, never turning back.
“W-Wait! Marinette, my ring!”
She clutched the Miraculous tighter in her hand and almost reared back to him. She stopped, though, and bowed her head.
“Plagg?”
The kwami of destruction hovered beside her, along with Tikki. She could feel them offering sympathetic looks towards the both of them.
The lucky charm bracelet on her arm felt as heavy as her heart, so with a trembling hand and a few tears, she pulled it off. It bounced off the escalator steps, each sound ringing in the vacuum of the lobby.
Without so much as a word, she walked up the steps and into the night, holding in the sorrow that rended her heart.
-
Author’s Notes: -Yes, this was definitely inspired by Captain America: Civil War -So, yeah, I wanted to write Civil War-esque angst of current canon attitudes coming to a head, because, you know, the writers are total cowards and would never do that. -Adrien’s entitlement issues may or may not actually head in this direction, the only difference between this and canon is that Marinette doesn’t roll over to please him or Chat’s misbehavior. -I am, for one, against Chat Blanc’s akumatization due to rejection, but for the purpose of this fic, I went with that. -I tried hard to emulate a slow regression in the last fight from something coordinated and coherent to an all-out fight for survival inside of the Louvre. -Why did I make Chat Blanc an absolute creeper? Because this stuff happens a lot. Good people, especially women, get taken advantage of by terrible human beings who just don’t understand that people are people, real, living people with their own lives, thoughts, and emotions. I’ve wanted to touch on this topic for a while and I might not have gotten it right, but I just needed to get it out there. -Will there be a follow-up? I don’t actually know. Next project is gonna be Day 11: Guardian (Something far more happier), then Day 13: Akuma-nette (Which I’m going more thriller/horror themed on).
Uh, thanks for reading. Take care of yourselves. See you all later.

“Really, Caramel, where did you get those candies?” Caramel's unusually colored friend asked.
Slightly irritated at her palomino friend, Caramel Treat replied, “I told you that. I made them. I cooked the rest of my lunch, too.
“Mommy Brightmane had to go into town early, on business. Nurse Fields was not feeling well, so I made her a breakfast in bed and made up some things for my lunch.
“What is the problem, Peanut? Cooking is EASY!”
Sitting at the edge of Caramel's checkered picnic cloth, spread in the shade of the big tree on the school's playground, Peanut Brittle nodded with a slightly bemused expression. “For you, maybe. I tried to make some of that popped barley candy that you brought last week!” She shivered at the memory. “It was an awful mess. Didn't taste that good, either!”
A solid shadow filled in some of the dappled shade under the tree. Jaret, who used to be a bully before he ran into Caramel's Han Fu training and cleverness, stood quietly by.
There were several other ponies behind him, including Miss Cherrilee, the principal and a well respected teacher.
When Caramel looked up, she smiled and asked, “Jaret! What do you want?”
Hesitantly, he said, “Would you sell me one or two of those candies? I would like to get one of the almond slivered popped barly bars and one of those sweet honeyed apple things.”
Caramel nodded slowly. “You want to buy my candies? Why not? Would four coppers be too much?”
While Peanut Brittle watched in surprise, Caramel sold most of the candies that she had made that morning. Miss Cherrilee bought FOUR. She walked away happily chewing on one and sharing one to Miss Whinly, one of the other teachers.
Two fillies and three colts waited restlessly for Caramel to finish her lunch. “Can we play dodge-wolf, Caramel?”
“Sure, Daphne! I just need to put away my lunch basket and talk my noon potion dose!” Caramel folded her picnic cloth and stowed everything neatly. Getting up, she trotted to the office.
In the door to the office, Caramel heard two strange rough voices. “Look here, Cherrilee, we knows that there is a ferocious werewolf loose here in Ponyville! We has heard that it lurks around the school here, just looking for the chance to snatch some helpless filly to devour!”
Miss Cherrilee, seeing Caramel behind them, retorted in a tart voice, “I rather think not! The so called ferocious werewolf has three Joint Royal Citations for Courage shown in rescues from burning structures. She has two Joint Royal Citations for Courage in Hazardous Material containment, including one for saving, not only this school but near to a third of the town as well!
“She is a formal part of the Ponyville Fire Department's Hazmat Team. She has tracked down and recovered four lost foals. Some rampaging monster!”
Caramel had heard enough. She silently shifted, her cute little pony snout growing longer and leaner, with jaws full of fangs. Her whole body was shifting from a small pony to Huge Everfree Ridgeback Wolf. She had gone from fur the light brown color of a caramel candy to dark gray fur tinged with black. A black ruff surrounded her neck and stiff black fur formed a ridge from ruff to the base of her black tufted tail.
In her quiet filly's voice she said, “You should be glad that the werewolf is better civilized than you. If she was not, you could be in serious danger, trapped here in this office like you are.”
One of the two, a pastel green often called 'gangrene' by the unkind, blew a short raspberry as he pulled a big knife. “We ain't in no danger! Show 'em, Stort!”
The other pony, an off bluish white, pulled a similar knife.
They had barely got their knives out before a powerful paw slapped hard between them, knocking their knives away. At the same time, a sweep kick by a hard driven gray furred leg took the rear legs out from under them both.
The huge Everfree ridgeback wolf that was Caramel Treat's were form, stepped delicately past the two and spoke in Caramel's filly voice, “It is time for my noon potion dose, Miss Cherrilee.” She sat across the necks of both of the fallen ponies, preventing them from getting up.
A grinning Miss Trake, the school's nearly golden unicorn secretary gathered up the knives with the acid comment, “It is against the school's rules, Ponyville ordinance, and kingdom law to have knives like these in a school.
“The Werewolf that you were so eager to hunt down follows the rules and behaves herself.”
The one called Stort spoke in a muffled voice due to an enormous wolf sitting on his head, “We was showed pictures of it in a deadly rampage right out there in the school yard!”
Caramel was looking down at him, a puzzled expression on her face. Just then a filly and a colt came running up to the office door.
“Caramel! What's taking so long? We want to play dodge-wolf!”
Stort made an incredulous noise! “Dodge-wolf! A game? I think that Sawnax got something a bit wrong!”
Miss Trake nearly dropped their knives, she was laughing so hard! “Sawnax! He CAUSED the Ponyville Potion Disaster! I was here when he knocked over Caramel's potion and cracked the bottle! Caramel saved us all.
“She spent over a week with the Fire Department Hazmat Team making sure that the parts of Ponyville that were downwind from the school were safe.”
The gangrenous colored one asked, “What about that big Werewolf bite scar on Sawnax's shoulder?”
The mauve colt, Jaret, snorted with suppressed giggles. “Dad told you THAT? He got less than a drop of Caramel's potion on his skin when he spilled it! It is really dangerous stuff if you don't know how to handle it!”
“Wait. Dad? Sawnax is your dad?”
Jaret hung his head in shame. “Yes, he is. After the mess he made here, I was alone for weeks while he was in the horspital.
“I began to find out how big a liar and sneak he is. He even kept records of a lot of it. I went to Miss Cherrilee, here and she found me a foster family to stay with. Judge Coldheart made it permanent. I don't want to ever stay with dad again.
“What he pulled on you was just dad being dad.”
The gangrenous one asked, “If we promise to be good, will you get off of us, Caramel, uh, Miss Treat?”
Lolling her tongue out in canine amusement, Caramel simply got up.
She pointed to the cabinet where her potion was being kept. Miss Trake opened it with her magic and lifted out two potion bottles, one the red of a dangerous potion, the other the green of safety. She also got out a heat discolored metal dose cup, a set of tongs, an alcohol burner and matches. She set them all out on the counter for Caramel's use.
She then herded all of the others from the room, leaving only Caramel, herself and Miss Cherrilee. Smiling, she told the two newcomers what the foals already knew. “To prevent any future problems like Sawnax caused, we don't allow any ponies but us here while she takes her potion. It can be dangerous in the wrong hooves. The Manehatten Biomedical Disaster demonstrated just how bad it can be.”
Sure that every pony was out, she locked the door. As Caramel heard the lock click, she lit the burner. Pouring with care, she first added a little of the green potion to her dose cup. Then she added a precisely measured amount from the red bottle, restoppering it securely as soon as she had poured its part into the cup. She quickly drank the whole dose, even licking out the cup. Taking the tongs, she gripped the cup and heated it in the flame of the alcohol burner until it was nearly red hot. After waving the cup to cool it, she let Miss Trake put it all away.
She emerged from the office, only to be met by a member of the Ponyville Police Department. He had Stort and the green pony in chains. Miss Cherrilee came out and began to confer with the officer. She made shooing gestures at the foals and wolf. “Go play! I will give you an extra fifteen minutes because of this silliness.”
The youngsters vanished like magic. Soon there was a very active game of dodge-wolf going on! Fillies and colts were laughing and calling as they played.
Staying carefully beyond the boundaries of the Protective Order of Judge Coldheart, Sawnax watched, with satisfaction, as he saw a police pony enter the school.
Later the ugly brown pony with the big ridged and knotted scar on his shoulder glowered and ground his teeth in irritation as he saw the wolf and foals come out to the playground. He stayed long enough to see the police pony leading away the two that he'd set up. Sawnax turned tail and returned to his business.
He took out his sour mood by calling to an employee, “Lyle! I catch you putting up another load of timbers that way, you're fired!”
Back at the school, the bell rang, as promised, fifteen minutes late. Colts and fillies returned to classes, grumbling like students everywhere, throughout time.
Miss Cherrilee was putting up the day's arithmetic lesson. “Barley costs two silver, four bits for five kilos. Honey costs eight bits for a half liter. Cooking oil costs six bits per liter. Slivered almonds cost four silver per half kilo.
“Now, if this recipe is followed,” Miss Cherrilee chalked a quick recipe up on the board, “how much will it cost to make it up? If it is divided into fifteen popped barley/almond bars, how much does each bar cost? Also, as an extra credit question, How many batches can you make out of the total ingredients listed?”
Miss Cherrilee had the rare pleasure for most teachers, of seeing Caramel Treat's face light up as she worked through the problem. As a teacher, she loved seeing a student understand the principle behind a problem.
Caramel was actually slow to hand in her paper but it was three sheets long! Besides the questions on the board, she had posed several other related questions and attempted to find answers or the approaches to answers.
Except for the nasty scene in the office, it was a wonderful day to be a teacher!
Only a few months later, Caramel graduated early from the Ponyville School. Brightmane, her mother, and Nurse Fields, her life-long nurse/companion hugged her after Miss Cherrilee gave her the diploma.
“Dinner at the Pink Note!” exclaimed Brightmane.
While they were happily ordering, to the background of soft live jazz that the Pink Note was famous for, Caramel was studying the menu itself. “Mom, I have an idea. Cooking is so easy for me. I would like to start a restaurant. I could specialize in my candies and such things.”
Brightmane paused. “You want me to buy you a restaurant? That is a pretty big graduation gift, dear.”
“No, Mom. I would want a loan to do it. I have talked to Miss Cherrilee about it. She has offered to help me to put together a business plan. Then we could do it properly, as a business. That way, you will make money and so will I.”
Nurse Fields faked crying. “Our little Caramel is all grown up!” Then she grinned hugely. “If Brightmane won't back you, I will! I do have some savings put aside.”
Brightmane regarded her friend and long time employee with lively curiosity. “Why so eager, Nurse Fields?”
“Caramel has cooked for me before! Mostly when I was under the weather. It is always good!” Grinning at Caramel, she added, “I have seriously thought about faking it to get her to cook for me some more!
“She always leaves the kitchen neat and tidy, too.”
Brightmane nodded quietly. “If you bring me a sound business plan, Caramel, I will see about that loan.”
The rest of the meal was the celebration that it was supposed to be.
They gave Cherry Mocha, the Pink Note's owner and waitress, a really good tip. They were strolling home through the edge of the Everfree Forest in the dusk.
Suddenly Caramel ordered, “Stop! Mom! Nurse Fields! Get back! There are ponies in the brush up ahead. They have weapons.”
With no sound at all, Caramel changed. It was like a ripple running from nose to tail. Caramel tan pony was swallowed by dark gray and black wolf. The wolf that was Caramel Treat vanished into the brush alongside the trail with ghost like silence.
In mere seconds, a clump of brush down the trail a little, erupted in pony! “Run, Stort! The Wolf's gonna kill us!”
The gangrenous green pony shot up the trail toward town! Stort, the pale blue pony was on his heels! Watching them go, Brightmane observed, “I thought ponies had to have wings to fly!”
Nurse Fields chortled, “Apparently, fear can replace wings! Look at them go!”
The wolf came out of the same thicket, bouncing happily. “Did you see that, Mom?”
Brightmane whickered laughter. “I sure did! What were they doing here?”
With casual nonchalance, Caramel replied, as she changed back to a pony, “Nothing much. Just trying to kill me.”
Brightmane sobered at once. “Trying to kill MY DAUGHTER is not a nothing!”
The next day Caramel went into Ponyville by herself. Her first stop was the school where she no longer a student. She and Miss Trake, the secretary were chatting happily, while waiting for Miss Cherrilee to be done with the class that she was teaching.
A dark brown pony with an angry, raw looking scar on his shoulder barged into the office and demanded, “Get out of the school, you monster! You done graduate! Got no more business here!”
Caramel turned to face the bigger pony with a smile on her face. “Sawnax! What are YOU doing here? Isn't there a Judge's Protective Order requiring you to stay away from the school? Seems to me that it was caused by some tiny incident involving you and a student's dangerous medicines! Only a third of the town had to be evacuated as a result!”
While Caramel was speaking and distracting Sawnax, Miss Trake was on the Magic Net mirror. “Emergency Services, please! Police. Sawnax is inside the school, in violation of the Protective Order of Judge Coldheart. He is harassing a pony with legitimate reason to be here.
“An officer is on the way? Thank you, Emergency Services!”
Sawnax, responding to Caramel's remark snapped, “Order is done and over now that you ain't going here no more! Now, get out!”
In a severe voice, Miss Trake returned, “That is not true! You were removed from the School Board and the Order was made permanent when it was found that, besides harassing Caramel, here, you were bothering Jaret and got caught destroying his homework!”
Sawnax growled, “Jaret is MY colt! He had no right to leave me, just because I was in the Horspital!”
Caramel looked askance at Sawnax and pointed out, “He had to have temporary fosterage while you were in the Horspital. At his age, he cannot live on his own.
“The family that took him in were good parents. HE made the decision to petition the Courts to make it permanent.
“He is doing really well in school now.”
Sawnax curled a lip and laid his ears back as he snarled, “School ain't everything!”
A third voice joined the conversation. “Perhaps not, Sawnax. However, the fact that you are here is unfortunate. I am Constable Crager, of the Ponyville Police Department. You are under arrest for violating a Protective Order.
“Will you come with me quietly, or must I use whatever force is needful?”
Sawnax responed, “You don't get it! I is trying to deal with a matter of HIGHER LAW! This here innocent looking pony is a WEREWOLF! A DEADLY MONSTER! At any moment the thin vernier of civilization could crack off! When it goes, she will explode into a murderous rampage!”
Constable Crager simply asked, “Will you come or not? I am authorized to use ANY force necessary.”
“I TOLD YOU! This is a matter of HIGHER LA . . .”
Sawnax's retort was cut off by meaty THUMP! Constable Crager's expertly wielded truncheon rebounded from the back of Sawnax's head as the brown pony collapsed.
The Constable had him in manacles in mere moments. As Sawnax groggily awakened, Constable Crager informed him, “Unfortunately, Sir, neither the Crowns Law nor the Local Law recognizes your so-called Higher Law. As this Werewolf is a creature with reason, she is covered under the Edict of Equality, which you have directly violated and will be charged with, in addition to the breach of the Order of Protection.”
Protesting bitterly, Sawnax was dragged away to jail.
Miss Cherrilee was watching from the hallway outside the office. “What put a burr under his tail?” she asked with curiosity.
“I think that it is the fact that I graduated from the school faster than any pony but one,” Caramel replied. “He was going around saying what a dummy I was, being home schooled and all. Along with the Potion Disaster, my early graduation destroyed his chance to ever get back on the school board. He had political plans that needed the school board to get started.
“Besides graduating early, I turned out to be a Royally Recognized Student!”
Miss Cherrilee nodded as she entered the office, “Yes, I can see how that embarrassed him. Are you going to take up the Canterlot University scholarship?”

Title Blue Rider Developer(s) Ravegan Ratalaika Games Publisher(s) EastAsiaSoft (Switch) Ravegan (Steam/PS4/Xbox One) Release Date(s) December 13th, 2018 (Switch) Genre Arcade SHMUP Platform(s) Switch, Steam, Xbox One Age Rating E10+ for Everyone 10+ Official Website
Not all SHMUPs are created equally. Ravegan’s Blue Rider title is certainly a testament to that. Where most in the genre would simply stick to the standard formula, Blue Rider takes a much different approach. It calls on a number of traditional gameplay elements found in arcade shoot ’em ups, but adds in the unique twist of having fully rendered 3D levels that players can traverse at their own pace. Originally released for Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One between 2016 and 2017, Blue Rider was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch during the 2018 holiday season. For the purposes of this re-review, I’ll be focusing on that version alone.
As alluded to above, the level design in Blue Rider deviates from genre standards. Not only are all of the stages three-dimensional, but they aren’t the typical up or side-scrolling type either. Instead, each stage is a fully rendered 3D environment that players are able to move through in any direction. You’re able to backtrack too, so if you make it to the end of a stage and wish to go back to the beginning, you are free to do so. Each stage is comprised of multiple branching paths and gates that will need opened in order to progress. At the end of each level, you will encounter a boss enemy with its own unique weakness that needs exploiting. There are nine stages in total and each one has slightly different scenery. You begin in a jungle and end up trekking through a desert, a beach, a lush forest, a snowy forest, a sea of lava, and an industrial facility. What I found most fascinating about this was the fact that while every two stages were completely different, there was usually a stage in between where the first 50% of the environment would be the same as the previous level and the last half would slowly blend into the new environment of the next level. This was a nice touch and it made the game’s progression feel more natural. There are some SHMUPs where each stage is radically different and doesn’t seem to mesh with the others- not here.
A solid level design is only as good as the accompanying art design (in the case of SHMUPs at least). I actually changed opinions halfway through playing as I warmed up to the look and feel of things. Initially, I thought that everything looked just a bit too cartoon-like. While this is not always a bad thing, I wasn’t crazy about it at first. Having said that, about three stages in I was feeling it. Both the visual style and gameplay of Blue Rider evoke that arcade feeling that I think the developers were going for. The ship that you pilot looks a lot like one of the ghost vehicles from Halo and most of the enemies are some form of mech or foot soldier. It’s not everyday that you fight foot soldiers in a SHMUP, but then again your ship wasn’t made to fly. While I wasn’t overly crazy about the ship or enemy designs, the backgrounds and boss enemies were really neat. The backdrop of each level utilized a wide range of colors and these varied depending on the environment. My favorite levels were the forest ones where giant purple gems dotted the landscape.

I haven’t much to say about the music since it wasn’t all that memorable. None of the tracks stood out as bad or unfitting to me, but the soundtrack as a whole felt a tad generic. This isn’t all that surprising given that the genre as a whole tends to place more of an emphasis on gameplay (with notable exceptions of course). While not the end of the world, it is something to make a note of. As far as the sound-effects go, I was a bit more impressed. There were an adequate number of sound effects and they never felt misplaced or overused to me. There were even some sounds that I wasn’t expecting to appear which did. I mentioned above that several of the levels included these giant purple gems. I accidentally shot one of them at some point and was pleasantly surprised to hear the sound of glass being rattled. While this may seem minor, it demonstrates to me that the developers were paying attention to detail. They could’ve just as easily not put a sound effect in at all, relying solely on the sounds of your weapons instead.

The gameplay itself felt a little more mixed for me. Like any game in the genre, enemies will fire curtains of projectiles at you to deal damage. You can avoid these projectiles by dodging your ship away from them. Your offense consists of a primary and secondary weapon, both of which can be updated by gathering power-ups. Your primary weapon has unlimited ammo, but your secondary has a limited stock. You can also increase your damage by gaining “rampage” mode from similar power-ups. The ability to move your ship and camera in any direction allows you to dodge enemy fire fairly easily, but it also leaves you open to attacks from other enemies that might surprise you from behind. Herein lies one of Blue Rider’s biggest issues- the maneuverability of your ship. Not only does your ship look like that one from Halo, but it also controls in a similar, albeit slower fashion. In a game that requires you to avoid being hit by strings of projectiles, having a fast ship is a must. While having a ship that moves too quickly might offer the player an unfair advantage, the controls in this game just felt heavy. It wasn’t a large enough problem to prevent me from completing the game, but it is an important item to make a note of.
Another minor annoyance for me was the fixed camera angle. Yes, you can control the horizontal axis of your camera, but the vertical axis is fixed in an almost top-down position (somewhere near 70 degrees). One issue that you’ll notice right away with this is how easy it is to get lost when traveling through levels. I often found myself circling back to the start of each level due to not being able to see which path led where. Your field of view is limited to what is directly around you, not in the distance. While this could just be my personal preference, I would’ve either preferred the ability to zoom in and out at will or have the camera fixed slightly farther away from my ship.

Bearing in mind that I’ve only ever played this on the Nintendo Switch, the following technical issues may only pertain to this version. There are a few weird bugs that I encountered every so often while playing. Most of these pertained to the backgrounds and most were apparent only during the first few stages. At times, items in the background like plants would appear distorted and glitch across the screen. In one instance, there were some leaves on a plant that stretched into a solid green line which would jostle around the screen when I moved past it. None of these issues affected the gameplay, but they were present nonetheless. A somewhat larger problem which did affect gameplay was the frame rate. While the majority of the game ran at a brisk 60 fps, there were points where it would dip below 30. These moments were fairly sporadic, but the issue seemed to arise when too many enemies appeared on screen at once. Some of the more involved boss fights were also affected by this issue. I can’t say that the game ever dropped into the single digits, but slowdown was definitely apparent at times and that’s a real shame.
For the purposes of grabbing screenshots and unlocking all of the stages as quick as I could, I chose to spend most of my time playing on “easy” mode. There are of course “normal and “hard” modes present as well should you wish for a greater challenge. The only differences that I noticed between these modes were the number of projectiles launched by enemies and the amount of damage which could be sustained before dying. If I may make a recommendation, I’d say it’s best to play through “easy” first to unlock all nine stages and then stick to normal from there on out. Be mindful as well that not all stages in the “easy” mode are easy anyway. Stage 8 in particular took me a while to complete because the terrain itself deals more damage to you than the enemies do. You have been warned.
Single playthroughs for arcade-style games often don’t last very long and such titles generally rely on replayability as a selling point. Blue Rider differs in that it actually took me a little over 2 hours to complete all nine stages on “easy”. While playing the two more difficult modes takes a bit longer, 2 hours for an easy mode is actually pretty impressive for such a game. I was expecting one sitting to last 30-45 minutes tops and was pleasantly surprised when it flew past that estimate. Once you’ve finished all nine stages, you can replay them at will with any difficulty. With that in mind, replayability exists here as well. Had the game been free from technical glitches, used a different approach for camera angles, and had more sensitive controls, I could’ve seen myself giving this one a 4/5. Having said that, those issues do dampen the score a bit, so I will settle on a 3.5/5 instead. Despite not being perfect, Blue Rider sets itself apart from its contemporaries and still deserves a look. It’s price on the Nintendo Switch eShop is only $9.99 USD and I think the pros definitely outweigh the cons at that point. If you’re looking for a SHMUP that’s both new and familiar at the same time, give this one a look.
