episode summary: inexplicably existing in post-war japan, brain hijacks a shrink ray he just found laying around in order to make it a growth ray. he intends to dress pinky up as terrifying local monster gollyzilla, and pretend to defeat him, so the japanese people... elect him... president. of. japan.

all i’m gonna say is shinzo abe’s replacement has a hell of a lot coming to him if that’s a job requirement.

the rundown:

IT IS TOKYO IN 1956.

you can tell because it says “tokyo 1956″ in big letters at the bottom of the screen.

as we take a detour into acmeshito labs, senior-ly produced by tom ruegger,

we see a fellow sacrificing his shoes to the shoe gods. (sorry about that weird line at the bottom. vlc player has just decided it’s doing that now, i guess. nothing i can do about it.)

inside, some other lads, who have all been produced by peter hastings (my, the man gets around) are shrinking tvs for fun and giggles.

“at last! professor mifune! you have perfected the process of shrinking electronic devices, so we can sell them to americans for a lot of money!”

hm.

“yes, shimura, and now i say to you! miniturisation will be very,

and then they both shuffle over to stand in front of each other and laugh in a weird stilted way.

HA. HAHAHA. HAHAHA. i’m not sure if this is making fun of japanese people, or a common trend in japanese media (or voice acting?) at the time, but, um, i’m uncomfortable.

thankfully, the newly miniturised radio advertises that Legendary Prehistoric Monster Gollyzilla has been spotted, and apparently

so maybe it’s best for mifune and shimura to get the fuck out of dodge.

so the two of them make a hasty retreat - after toeing their shoes back on, of course.

but who are these two!

brain looks pensive. i don’t know what’s in that waterbottle, but he’s having a tiny mousie crisis. pinky is narfing at him with little to no concern for his mental state.

still, crisis or not, brain has a world to take over. he mentions to pinky that the scentific equipment before them will be “invaluable for his plan to”

“TAKE OVER THE WORLD.” we really do get one per episode, huh.

“you mean you’re going to shrink down all the electronic so only mice can operate them?”

which is a reasonable idea, i think. brain counters it with “don’t be absurd, pinky, there’s no future in minaturisation,” and clarifies that is is big things that strike fear into the hearts of humans.

like that ridiculous legend of gollyzilla. <gay little hands on hip pose>

as pinky ponders whether Kay Ballard is In The Union (sorry, pinky, she’s dead) brain explains that his intent is to alter the shrink ray into a growth ray, to “become a four hundred foot tall mouse and save the world from gollyzilla.”

“but you just. said there was no such thing as gollyzilla, brain.”

“there is now, pinky.”

did we really need another closeup for that line, guys? really? is it not enough to have the mouse say his lines without shoving the camera into his face? must the man deepthroat the camera every time he has things to say?

anyway brain’s plan is to dress pinky up as gollyzilla and “save tokyo” from him. you can tell because the camera angle makes it look like his head is on gollyzilla’s body.

this random man takes a toke from his old timey pipe. “yes, i see.” he says. this is not explained.

as brain reverses the shrink ray into a growth ray, pinky makes his debut.

TADAAAAAAA POIT.

“what do you think, brain? pretty scaaaaaaary, eh?”

“yes, pinky. terrifying. stand by.”

there probably won’t be a lot left of the lab when brain is done, unfortunately.

fumiko and hershel get the fuck out of dodge.

still, pinky’s having fun, and that’s what matters.

though bits of his costume are coming off.

“oooh, i can’t see through this thing!”

“oh.”

“oh no! the giant monster is moulting!”

rip that guy, i guess. upon attempting to recover his lost glove, pinky accidentally spikes his tail on a nearby building in the process.

“egad. i’m all a tangle!”

he gives it a yank, for good measure,

and ends up catapulting himself into the abyss.

the random man is back. “yesss, i see,” he says. what does he want? what is he doing here? please don’t smoke in front of me, sir. i have real bad asthma.

meanwhile, brain is making himself “the largest mouse on earth, and hero of the planet.”

donk.

this frame is terrifying so obviously i’m making everyone look at it.

“people of tokyo! do not fear! i, brainodo, have come to save you!”

i’m not sure they’re convinced. the army have shown up, by this point.

“it’s another giant monster! even more ugly than gollyzilla!”

rude.

brain suggests that, perhaps, he is actually an artificially enlarged labmouse here to save them from gollyzilla, and maybe they could thank him by making them emperor.

the military do not agree.

so, yknow, maybe it’s best that he goes to look for pinky.

“how can i save the city from gollyzilla with no gollyzilla!” yells brain, as he steps on a school bus and either, 1, kills like 40 children, or 2, ruins the setpiece for melanie martinez’s 2019 music video “wheels on the bus.”

(no one’s watching us don’t give a fuck wheels on the bus ou ou)

anyway it’s a good thing that pinky has decided to spontaniously burst out of this lake. man’s really commiting to the role, huh.

again, he’s having fun.

brain is less impressed.

after admonishing pinky for running off,

brain reminds him to “make the battle look realistic”. their plan, of course, depends on it.

TAKE THAT, YOU HORRIBLE BEAST

pinky sure is putting a weird amount of effort into this battle. and pyrotechnics??? yeah.

as brain unflomphs himself, and prepares to strike back, pinky comes over to see what’s going on.

and by the looks of things, he’s not very happy.

conclusion:

pinky’s first instinct, upon seeing The Real Gollyzilla (please stand up, please stand up) brandishing a building at them, is to pick brain up and flee in terror.

it’s very cute. he just scoops him up and nopes him away. not today, gollyzilla. not today.

gollyzilla, unfortunately, seems pretty bloody determined to make it today.

unfortunately, in his quest to deliver brain to safety, pinky walks right into a pylon.

and unfortunately, they fell directly onto what was once acmeshito labs, which activates the growth ray in the process.

the mice duck out of the way as the fearsome creature is launched like an olympic sport. good thing tokyo 2020 got cancelled, i guess.

air lizard. nyoom. unfortunately they land on the remains of acmeshitu labs,

and nudges the growth ray in the process.

A modo de resumen

2019 fue un año de grandes cambios y retos personales. Conocí a mi pareja, me enamoré perdidamente de la bicicleta, empecé a estudiar, viajé mucho (por la provincia de Córdoba, más que nada, pero quien te quita lo viajado (?)), cambié de laburo, leí libros muy interesantes (y otros no tanto), me inscribí en la facultad, me mudé. Fueron un montón de cosas.

Que no tienen nada que ver con este post porque acá voy a hablar de videojuegos.

Hasta empezar este blog no era de jugar mucha variedad de fichines: cada tanto instalaba algo al azar y lo jugaba, pero terminaba volviendo al viejo amor: el Counter, además que no sumaba tantas horas como para decir que “lo jugaba”. Así que por lo pronto los cinco juegos que más me gustaron del 2019 que no son el Counter

5. Cultist Simulator.

¿Qué es? Juego de cartas/management, a mitad de camino entre el solitario y el tarot, donde tenes que crear tu propio culto, en torno a tu persona y a los Misterios Ocultos, además de reclutar gente y estudiar las Escrituras.

Mecánicamente tenes que ir combinando cartas para ir aumentando tus seguidores, tus conocimientos y para evitar volverte loco y morir. Cuando morís podes elegir de que manera reencarnar, ampliando así la historia e introduciendo nuevos personajes.

La cantidad de combinaciones que podes realizar con todas las cartas es enorme, y amplían muchísimo el margen de acciones que podes tomar: invocaciones, exploraciones, estudios, secuestros, captación de adeptos.

¿A qué se parece? Solitario spider meets Tarot meets Football Manager 2019.

Para jugar después de haber visto algún documental sobre sectas, pensando si vos podes hacer lo mismo si le pones ganas.

Género: Juego de cartas.

Año: 2018.

4. Enter the Gungeon.

¿Qué es? BULLET HELL ROGUELIKE TWIN STICK SHOOT ‘EM UP con un giro de fórmula donde las municiones son las que disparan las armas. Por otro lado, si todo eso te suena a un montón de jerga de sistemas o finanzas, acá te va un pequeño glosario:

Bullet hell: Que hay tiros por todos lados.

Roguelike: Que es similar al Rogue, un juego de exploración de calabozos de los ‘80, cuya mayores contribuciones a la industria fue la introducción de mapas generados aleatoriamente, haciendo que cada partida sea única, y la popularización del concepto de permadeath, o muerte permanente, que significa que una vez que el personaje muere tenes que comenzar todo de cero.

Twin stick: Son los juegos que utilizan un stick del gamepad para mover el personaje y el otro stick para apuntar la dirección de los disparos. El juego en popularizarlo fue Robotron: 2084, cuyo creador sufrió un accidente automovilistico en las primeras etapas de desarrollo, y la adaptación que le hizo a los controles para poder usarlos con el yeso de su mano derecha derivaron en la creación de este esquema de control

Shoot ‘em up: Subgénero de acción donde el jugador tiene que superar cada nivel aniquilando la mayor cantidad de enemigos posibles. De Space Invader para acá, si vas de izquierda a derecha (o de abajo hacia arriba) en la pantalla manteniendo apretado B para destruir todos los bichitos con armas, es un shoot ‘em up.

¿A qué se parece? Gauntlet  The Binding of Isaac, Operation: Carnage.

Para jugar con amigos, en tu sillón, si estás un poco en pedo mejor.

Desarrollador: Dodge Roll.

Género: Técnicamente, es un dungeon crawler pero con armas en vez de espadas.

Año: 2016.

3. Risk of Rain 2.

¿Qué es? La mejor secuela a un juego desde el Half-Life 2 para acá. Risk of Rain 2 es un juego de disparos en tercera persona donde la dificultad va aumentando a medida que pasa el tiempo. A medida que pasa el tiempo vas consiguiendo mejor loot, que afecta de manera tremenda la manera en que el juego se siente, pero se complica mucho más la supervivencia. Es extremadamente divertido y cuenta muchisima rejugabilidad, ya que los niveles van cambiando la ubicación de los power ups y las salidas de manera aleatoria. Además la música es una de las mejores en un videojuego desde el Doom 2016 y el Hotline Miami para acá

¿A qué se parece? Al primer Risk of Rain, pero sólo que en 3D.

Para jugar cuando queres un reto que te pueda implicar estar un par de horas sentado con la tensión al máximo. Mejor si jugas con gente así aprovechan las distintas clases que pueden utilizar en los personajes.

Desarrollador: Hopoo Games.

Género: 3D Bullet hell roguelike pandemonium.

Año: 2019.

2. Descenders.

¿Qué es? Basicamente, un juego de downhill biking. Elegis tu bici, elegis tu sendero, y le das para adelante. Trucos, saltos, árboles, lo más cerca que esté a British Columbia en mi vida, todo eso está en la pantalla. Los niveles son generados aleatoramiente en cada partida, así que cada partida y nivel es único a pesar de contar en teoría con la misma dificultad. Tiene multiplayer pero la verdad no conozco a nadie que lo juegue así que está complicado.

¿A qué se parece? Excitebike con mucho de Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, o bien un Trials, sólo que sin bugs (y esos easter eggs rarisimos que tiene esa franquicia). Hay por ahí algo del Motocross Madness)

Para jugar después de ver videos de Red Bull Rampage (y llorar porque vos tenes una hardtail en vez de una Santa Cruz full suspension)

Desarrollador: RageSquid.

Género: Deportes y carreritas en bici chabón wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Año: 2019.

1. Into the Breach.

¿Qué es? Juego de estrategia por turnos en donde tenes que combatir una invasión extraterrestre que surge desde el interior de la Tierra. Cada vez que perdes una partida, podes elegir uno de los pilotos de tus naves para que se reencarne en una nueva línea temporal, manteniendo su nivel y sus buffs, y así ad infinitum. Está muy bien escrito, si tenes paciencia para leer entre líneas lo que dice cada personaje.

¿A qué se parece? Pacific Rim, Neon Genesis Evangelion, y los viejos XCOM. También tiene mucho de ajedrez en eso que si te mandas una cagada prácticamente tiras toda la partida al carajo.

Para jugar en cualquier momento del día. Es muy fácil colgar con esto. No me pasaba algo así desde Civilization IV.

Desarrollador: Subset Games, los creadores del FTL.

Género: Estrategia por turnos. El ajedrez no puede estar equivocado (?)

The New Zealand mosque killer faces an ‘unprecedented’ sentence that bars him from ever applying for release, but could yet dodge terror charges, legal experts say.

Brenton Tarrant has been charged with one initial count of murder over the mass shootings that killed 50 people in the southern city of Christchurch and faces life in prison.

In New Zealand, being found guilty of murder usually comes with a minimum of 10 years in jail before possible parole.

Legal experts said the 28-year-old Australian’s alleged crimes were so extreme they could warrant the heaviest sentence imposed by a judge in the South Pacific nation since the abolition of the death penalty in 1961.

But one academic said prosecutors may shy away from terror charges – despite Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labelling the massacre an act of terrorism.

‘He may be sentenced to imprisonment without parole. There is a very significant possibility,’ criminal lawyer Simon Cullen told AFP, adding that such a sentence would be ‘unprecedented’.

‘This would seem to be… the type of situation that may well attract consideration of that type of sentence.’

The longest-ever murder sentence imposed in New Zealand was in 2001 when a judge sentenced William Bell to life imprisonment with a 30-year minimum term for a triple murder.

University of Auckland criminal procedure expert Bill Hodge said despite Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labelling the massacre an act of terrorism, prosecutors may shy away from terror charges.

The Terrorism Suppression Act was only introduced in 2002, after the US 9/11 attacks and is untested in the courts.

‘We haven’t used our terrorism laws previously and the laws are designed to inhibit or prosecute those involved with groups and financing and publications and the like,’ Hodge told AFP.

‘I don’t think there’s any reason to use statues that have not been used previously when the Crimes Act – murder, attempted murder, manslaughter – are perfectly functional and well-understood.’
