Ram Sport 2019, nouveaux produits de FCA et GMC Canyon All Terrain diesel

Certaines semaines sont plus occupées que d’autres. Après les quelques jours passés au Nouveau-Brunswick pour l’ÉcoRandonnée, je me suis envolé la semaine dernière vers Windsor, en Ontario, pour y visiter les labos de l’Université locale qui fait des essais et recherches pour FCA (FiatChrysler Automobiles) puis pour y conduire le nouveau pick-up Ram 1500 en finition Sport (unique au marché canadien) dans la région de la Pointe Pélée.

Évidemment, il y aurait beaucoup à dire sur cette grande nouveauté mais je préfère conserver mes impressions de conduite après une semaine passée au volant de cette camionnette lorsque je l’aurai ici même dans la région montréalaise. Toutefois, je peux quand même avancer que ce Ram fut certes le plus doux (ce pick-up à cabine d’équipe Crew Cab était équipé de la suspension pneumatique optionnelle) que j’ai conduit de cette marque. Il est aussi le plus silencieux. Mes premières impressions furent très positives mais il y a quand même quelques petits irritants qu’il faut considérer. En partant, FCA n’offre qu’une seule mécanique pour le Ram 2019, celle du V8 HEMI avec la boîte auto à huit rapports (et la motricité aux quatre roues optionnelle). On attend toujours le V6 avec le moteur électrique qui remplace l’alternateur et le V8 HEMI semblable. Voilà ce qui devrait améliorer la consommation de ce véhicule (au moment où le prix du carburant grimpe sans cesse…serait-ce dû à l’approche des vacances?  Nooooon! vous répondraient les pétrolières). Puis, il y a l’option du moteur diesel. Toutefois, celui-ci ne viendra que l’année prochaine…Puis, il y a ce pare-chocs arrière auquel FCA n’a pas encore intégré de marche pour atteindre la caisse (plus haute de 33 mm, en passant). Je pourrai vous en dire plus dans un avenir plus ou moins rapproché…

Les nouveaux produits de FCA

Je vais à la piste d’essai de Chrysler à Chelsea depuis 1985, si je me souviens bien. Chaque année où j’y suis invité, j’y découvre de véritables nouveautés dont certaines qui sont sous «embargo» ce qui veut dire que nous n’avons pas le droit d’en parler (ou de publier nos impressions de conduite). Mais en général, on ne nous montre que des modèles reconduits avec de légères modifications comme, par exemple, le Jeep Cherokee 2019 avec son avant redessiné ou encore la Charger SRT avec calandre modifiée. Puis, il y a toujours les camionnettes et les véhicules commerciaux. Curieusement, cette année, la «vedette» de ce créneau était le fourgon ProMaster avec calandre redessinée (son petit frère le Promaster City a aussi une nouvelle calandre) qui pourra être équipé d’un système d’enregistrement de l’entretien et de la conduite du véhicule (pour les parcs commerciaux). Notez que ce grand fourgon basé sur un produit Fiat n’est plus disponible avec le moteur turbodiesel à quatre cylindres. Peu de preneurs nous a-t-on dit!

Mais le clou du spectacle fut certes le dévoilement de la Dodge Challenger RedEye, un coupé à moteur V8 HEMI suralimenté de…797 chevaux! Oui, vous avez bien lu, presque 800 chevaux! Malade! Et le pire, c’est que je suis invité à conduire cette auto dans quelques semaines sur une piste de course. Je me rappelle de mon expérience avec les premiers Hellcat à Portland en Oregon. C’était fou! Que sera alors l’expérience avec 797 chevaux! Incidemment, les Hellcat feront 717 chevaux en 2019 au lieu de 707 chevaux.

D’autre part, chez Chrysler (ou FCA), j’ai eu la chance de conduire plusieurs autres véhicules intéressants comme la Fiat 124 Abarth et le Jeep Grand Cherokee TrackHawk de 707 chevaux sur piste de slalom, le Durango SRT avec un bateau en remorquage (comme quoi on peut tout faire avec ces véhicules de performance) et surtout des Jeep en piste hors-route (Wrangler Rubicon deux portes et Compass surtout et ne venez pas me dire que le Compass n’est pas une vraie Jeep! Vous auriez dû être là en piste de boue).

GMC Canyon All Terrain diesel

Lorsque je suis revenu de Chelsea, j’ai été prendre livraison du pick-up intermédiaire Canyon All Terrain mû par le moteur diesel à quatre cylindres Duramax de 2,8 litres qui fait 181 chevaux mais 369 li-pi de couple. Ceux-ci possèdent beaucoup de mordant dans les sentiers (je les avais déjà essayés dans des situations extrêmes en Californie) et il y a même des arêtes sur le rebord des flancs pour grimper sur les roches. Mais ils sont bruyants sur les routes régulières. Mon conseil? Acheter des roues et des pneus plus «doux» pour l’utilisation de tous les jours et conserver ses Goodyear avec les autres roues pour des usages hors-route…quand ils se présentent.

Inutile de vous décrire l’apparence extérieure du Canyon, on la voit très bien sur les photos. Toutefois, un modèle à cabine d’équipe Crew Cab à quatre portes exige un châssis allongé qui rend certaines manœuvres de stationnement plus difficile. Le rayon de braquage de ce GMC n’est pas exemplaire mais il m’a paru plus efficace que celui du Nissan Frontier essayé plus tôt.

En ce qui a trait à l’intérieur, il est presque identique à celui du Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 décrit il y a quelques mois dans ce blogue. Sauf qu’il y a quelques commandes différentes au tableau de bord dont le frein-moteur par les échappements et quelques autres accessoires. Grimper à bord n’est pas ce qu’il y a de plus facile même avec les marchepieds. Toutefois, l’espace intérieur est relativement grand et les sièges assez confortables. Les sièges avant sont chauffants dans ce modèle assez luxueux, un accessoire apprécié en hiver. Les places arrière sont tout aussi accueillantes mais on ne peut rabattre que les dossiers si l’on veut profiter de cette partie de l’habitacle pour y transporter des objets fragiles.

La caisse est un autre sujet épineux. Encore une fois, je ne comprends pas pourquoi les ingénieurs de GM (comme ceux des autres constructeurs) ne réussissent pas à créer un plancher qui pourrait accepter un contreplaqué de quatre pieds de large à plat entre les ailes (il manque à peine quelques pouces pour y arriver). La raison est toujours la même, ces ingénieurs veulent libérer le débattement des roues à l’arrière. Mais, je me demande…il devrait y avoir une solution à ce problème, non? Ah oui! Cette même caisse est capable d’une charge de 700 livres mais la capacité de remorquage passe à 7700 livres avec le moteur diesel! Le quatre cylindres à essence ne permet que 3500 livres mais le V6 à essence permet, lui, 7000 livres.

Sur la route.

Outre la remarque sur son rayon de braquage pas toujours pratique, il faut avouer que ce plus petit pick-up est très agréable à conduire. Évidemment, il conserve certains petits défauts auxquels il faut s’habituer (comme un léger sautillement de l’arrière sur route endommagée) mais en général, il procure un certain confort sur l’autoroute et surtout une grande visibilité.

Le moteur diesel n’est certes pas un «foudre de guerre» pour reprendre l’expression préférée d’un de mes collègues car ses accélérations peuvent être laborieuses au lancement initial mais elles se reprennent rapidement et peuvent propulser le petit camion à 100 km/h en moins de 11 secondes. Les reprises sont plus convaincantes mais la vitesse limite dépasse à peine 160 km/h…ce qui n’est pas très confortable dans un tel véhicule. Parler de tenue de route ne veut pas dire comparer le Canyon à une voiture de sport mais la direction est relativement précise. Le freinage, par contre, est un peu instable compte tenu de la nature de la bête.

Malheureusement, mes calculs de la consommation ont été faussés, fort possiblement pas une erreur avec les commandes au volant. Par conséquent, je dois me fier au calcul de l’ordinateur de bord qui indiquait alors une moyenne de 10,8 l./100 km . Il faut dire que plus de la moitié de mon parcours s’est fait sur autoroute.

Le prix de base d’un petit Canyon tourne autour des 25 000 $.
