We also had a chance to test the Ranger’s chops off-road on a pre-prepared course designed to show off the advantages of the new truck versus the competition. With that in mind, we did find the Ford’s Trail Control off-road cruise control—standard on 4×4 models—operated more smoothly than did the Tacoma’s. With Trail Control active, the Ranger barely elicited a single electronic grunt on a bumpy downhill trail, while the Tacoma’s similar system jerked that truck through the demonstration as its ABS brake sensors played an industrial metal band soundtrack.
Ford’s Trail Control may be used in four-and two-wheel-drive high range as well as 2-Lo at speeds of up to 20 mph. On the longer, winding off-road trail prepared for the event, the Ranger 4×4 with its 17- or 18-inch all-terrain tires (we took three laps, each in a different-spec truck) and terrain control handled everything from loose dirt to downhill steps to an articulation course, plus a mud bath. We’re sure this truck won’t be able to follow the Jeep Gladiator along a Moab trail—that’s what the upcoming Bronco and Bronco Jr. will be for—but anyone who wants to take his or her bike far off-trail will be able to get a good head start with the Ranger.
The terrain control adjusts for mud and snow, on-road, off-road, etc., with the twist of a dial on the center console. The interior layout is refreshingly simple, with tough seat fabrics and upgrade leathers befitting a work-or-play truck. The standard instrument panel features a real tachometer with a physical dial, while the tech package gets you configurable instruments including a digital rev counter. We prefer the real tach, natch.
In another staged exercise, we drove a 4×2 SuperCab XLT along a few miles of San Diego County canyon roads with about 450 pounds’ worth of two KTM 450 SX-F dirt bikes. Again, the EcoBoost four proved plenty powerful for this situation, although the suspension feels just a slight bit more jittery here than when unladen. You probably won’t feel that wobble if your choice of two-wheeler is an aluminum-framed mountain bike.
Our final stint was in a 4×4 SuperCrew Lariat, with the FX4 off-road package. The base price of this one was $39,490, and our example stickered at $44,255. The 4×4 Ranger CrewCab was no less pleasant to drive in suburban and urban settings than the 4×4 SuperCab, nor did did it exhibit any of the dive or squat of full-size pickups. With that in mind, we did find the Ford’s Trail Control off-road cruise control—standard on 4×4 models—operated more smoothly than did the Tacoma’s. With Trail Control active, the Ranger barely elicited a single electronic grunt on a bumpy downhill trail, while the Tacoma’s similar system jerked that truck through the demonstration as its ABS brake sensors played an industrial metal band soundtrack.
Ford’s Trail Control may be used in four-and two-wheel-drive high range as well as 2-Lo at speeds of up to 20 mph. On the longer, winding off-road trail prepared for the event, the Ranger 4×4 with its 17- or 18-inch all-terrain tires (we took three laps, each in a different-spec truck) and terrain control handled everything from loose dirt to downhill steps to an articulation course, plus a mud bath. We’re sure this truck won’t be able to follow the Jeep Gladiator along a Moab trail—that’s what the upcoming Bronco and Bronco Jr. will be for—but anyone who wants to take his or her bike far off-trail will be able to get a good head start with the Ranger.
The terrain control adjusts for mud and snow, on-road, off-road, etc., with the twist of a dial on the center console. The interior layout is refreshingly simple, with tough seat fabrics and upgrade leathers befitting a work-or-play truck. The standard instrument panel features a real tachometer with a physical dial, while the tech package gets you configurable instruments including a digital rev counter. We prefer the real tach, natch.
In another staged exercise, we drove a 4×2 SuperCab XLT along a few miles of San Diego County canyon roads with about 450 pounds’ worth of two KTM 450 SX-F dirt bikes. Again, the EcoBoost four proved plenty powerful for this situation, although the suspension feels just a slight bit more jittery here than when unladen. You probably won’t feel that wobble if your choice of two-wheeler is an aluminum-framed mountain bike.
Our final stint was in a 4×4 SuperCrew Lariat, with the FX4 off-road package. The base price of this one was $39,490, and our example stickered at $44,255. The 4×4 Ranger CrewCab was no less pleasant to drive in suburban and urban settings than the 4×4 SuperCab, nor did did it exhibit any of the dive or squat of full-size pickups. The Ranger lineup as a whole feels right-sized and well-suited to working in all sorts of traffic situations.
Ford’s new Ranger is a worthy rival for the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, and it may make some headway against the older, more traditional-feeling Toyota Tacoma. While the Ranger’s slight fuel-economy advantage isn’t great enough to overcome the GM twins’ wider variety of powertrain and trim choices, especially with oil remaining dirt-cheap, having another choice in the market is no bad thing, and this is no bad truck.
Yes, but what about a Ranger Raptor? Basically, you can forget about it for a while. Ford’s under-the-skin rework of the Ranger for North America included adding a fully boxed frame, which reportedly precludes the global Ranger Raptor’s Watts-link rear suspension. In addition, the non-U.S. Ranger Raptor comes with a number of engine choices and our Ranger has a streamlined lineup. But body-on-frame trucks are easier to redesign than unibody cars and SUVs, so keep your hopes alive and check back again when the next-gen Ranger is engineered with America in mind from the outset.

Cruisin’ The Coast 2018: Best Car Show of The Year
Well the 2018 version of Cruisin’ the Coast is in the books and all we can say is the event just keeps getting better. Maybe that’s why USA Today named Cruisin’ the Coast Best Car Show of the Year for 2018. For one full week hot rods, muscle cars, restored cars, and Tri-Fives fill the Mississippi coast. It’s a car lover’s paradise. Rolling down Route 90 keeps you skirting the coast and there are rods, customs, muscle cars, and pickups heading in every direction.
Each of the 10 towns on the cruise list is unique in its own way, which makes “getting your ticket stamped” well worth the effort. For registered cars, if you drive to each designated town and get your entry card stamped, you are in the running for the big prize money drawings. Of course there is a lot more to it than getting a paper ticket stamped. We are talking great seafood, antique shops, boutiques, and scenic seaside towns to enjoy. There is also the big burnout contest in Pass Christian on Thursday night, live music at every venue from Tuesday through Saturday, so it is no wonder this event has grown over the years from an initial event of under 1,000 cars 22 years ago, to the monstrous Cruisin’ the Coast 2018 that recorded 8,444 registered cars in attendance.
The Chevy Nomad was basically a factory-born custom so there is little need for heavy mods. A shaved hood, single-bar grille, and smoothed bumper go a long way to improving on an excellent design. With a Dakota Digital–monitored LS motor underhood, Vintage Air inside, and RideTech coilovers this wagon is built to haul.
Rather than being captured in a fairgrounds, this event takes place over a 45-mile stretch of coastline. The fun starts early and cruisin’ goes on well after dark. This year Mississippi served up plenty of sunshine all week long. It was a bit warmer than normal, but a continued soft breeze off the Gulf kept things pleasant and the evenings were simply perfect roadster weather.
Included in the 8,444 cruisers was the STREET RODDER Road Tour, with Jerry Dixey leading a larger-than-average number of cars into Biloxi. The new United Pacific Industries 1932 Ford pickup was looking good cruising the beaches. The group has reserved parking in all the different towns during the week, so there is a definite advantage to being a Road Tourian.
This event is so much fun, so laid back, that the week is over in a flash. You could have taken in the autocross, gone to the Blessing of the Cars, had a great breakfast for charity, attended the sock hop, had your car in a parade, bought a car at the Vicari Auto Auction, searched for parts at the big swap meet, hit a couple casinos, gobbled a few Shrimp Po Boys, checked out cars for sale in the Car Corral, and taken in a burnout contest, and guess what, you still wouldn’t have done everything Cruisin’ the Coast has to offer. We attend a lot of rod runs and one thing we noticed about this event is the larger-than-normal number of couples. The event has so much to offer many of the ladies have put this one down as a “must-attend” event.
Load up the station wagon and head to the coast! The ride from Michigan to Mississippi was hastened by a 5.7L Dodge Hemi underhood. The super-rare two-door wagon body remains relatively stock and rides on Fatman suspension. Inside leather-covered buckets and Chrysler air conditioning keep things comfortable. The A580 tranny is shifted by a Challenger shifter and it all rolls on American Racing wheels.
Speaking of towns we would like to give a shout-out to some folks. First to the over 1,000 volunteers in those yellow T-shirts, thanks for making the event run so smoothly. Your work and pleasant demeanor does not go unnoticed. PAINLESS PERFORMANCE TOP 100 Tech Tip Changing From a Three-Wire alternator to a One-Wire Alternator Part 2
On late-model cars and trucks equipped with internal regulated alternators, the switch is pretty simple. Remove the connector and wires plugged into the side of the alternator and cut off at the main harness tape and secure or just tape and secure the harness out of sight in case someday they may want to be used again. Check the output of the new alternator compared to the old one to be sure the original output wire will be heavy enough for the new amperage output.
Caution: An add-on high-output charge wire kit like the Painless PN 30709 is recommended.
Note: A charge light can’t be used with a one-wire alternator system.

Inside linen leather combines with aluminum accents, VDO gauges, and a tilt column to make this a great road car.

This 1961 Chevy bubbletop may look conservative but there was a lot of work fitting those huge rear tires. The bumpers are painted with a special PPG metallic paint, giving the car the feel of a drag car “lightweight.” The side trim has been treated with the same paint. Underhood a 5.7L LS moves the car quickly while Wilwood brakes slow things down. Inside red interior, Vintage Air, Dakota Digital gauges, and a column shift complete this stunning package.

Great cars age well. With that thought we could not resist selecting Boyd’s beater. This coupe was built on his TV show and then driven to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in 2006. The defining feature is the reshaped quarter window and overall craftsmanship. A basic hot rod, it runs a dual-quad fed 283/Powerglide and a Magnum front axle and 9-inch rear with drums on all corners. Vintique steelies and caps complete the look. Yes, Boyd Coddington knew how to build a hot rod. It is hard to believe he left us 10 years ago; we miss him still.

Midsize Ram Truck Planned to Return

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recently announced their plans to re-enter the mid-size truck segment in the next decade. Without having a stake in this segment since the 2011 Dodge Dakota, it appears Ram will be the brand benefitting from this expansion. Rival brands like Ford, GMC and Chevy have made good business with their popular mid-size trucks. In fact, Chevy has gone as far as providing their mid-size Colorado pickup with a diesel engine and a ZR2 off-road package. Ford has seen steady sales of their Ranger pickup and GMC has the Canyon mid-size truck. Now, Ram will look to add more competition to the market with a mid-size pickup set to debut in 2022 that will be available in the United States.
Listed as a mid-size/metric ton vehicle, Ram has not provided what the specifics of this vehicle will be or any unique differences from their competitors. Mike Manley, Head of Ram and Jeep, also did not acknowledge what the name of the truck would be. There’s a lot to be decided between now and four years or so when the truck will be unveiled. Could there be more than one truck?
Upcoming Plans for FCA
While it’s years away for the expected release, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has made promises before about vehicles that have not come out yet. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has been talked about since 2011, but is now finally scheduled for early next decade. In the presentation made available to the media, there was a disclaimer that alluded to possible changes listed, “Actual results may differ materially from those expressed in forward-looking statements.”
The mid-size truck segment is red hot at the moment, and current CEO of FCA Sergio Marchionne has been looking to direct plans for continued growth with success in popular markets. Currently, the Jeep brand is experiencing fantastic sales for FCA and they want to continue to grow globally. The mid-size truck class is also growing in popularity, so naturally Marchionne knows this is another area to expand in. Marchionne is leaving the company with an unnamed successor, but one thing is certain – he’ll leave behind big plans. As alluded to in the five-year plan announced by FCA earlier this month, Marchionne wants to see their Ram trucks continue to expand and is trying unique ways to reach more customers.

The current all-new 2019 Ram 1500 is going to be produced along with the 2018 Ram 1500 in the United States. Both trucks will to continue to add sales, much like Apple sells their latest iPhone with their previous generation iPhone. Ram figures there’s perks to having both, the 2018 and 2019 edition of the Ram truck for sale for customers. This makes sense as customers have options for their truck size ranging from light-duty to mid-size and heavy-duty pickups, they now have the option to choose the newer version if they wish.

Mitsubishi Ramping up its Game With New Products
It’s a start. Mitsubishi has an all-new SUV on the market with the 2018 Eclipse Cross compact crossover and the U.S. finally has its version of the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid. Names like Evolution and Montero will be resuscitated as well for future utility vehicles.
The brand many either forgot or gave up on has been given renewed life as part of the Nissan-Renault Alliance and its place in the triumvirate is as an SUV, plug-in hybrid and all-wheel drive specialist. Mitsubishi also has a new chief overseeing U.S. operations, Fred Diaz, who comes over from Nissan and before that was in charge of Ram trucks for FCA. He became CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America on April 1.
It won’t be easy. Early reviews have been a little harsh on the Eclipse Cross, which is unlikely to stir the SUV pot but does offer some value for shoppers in the compact crossover segment. And the Outlander PHEV, which finally launched in January, arrives almost five years after it was promised which makes it an aging new vehicle for us. And the use of iconic car names for new crossovers has purists going mad.
Rejuvenating a brand takes time and utility vehicles and electrified vehicles are growing segments so the brand’s future product lineup bears watching. Mitsubishi also is positioning itself as the value brand of the Alliance, allowing Nissan to move a bit upmarket. Executives say some of the introductions now are preparing the ground for the new products to come.
Here is what we can expect:
Eclipse Cross
When you ask people what Mitsubishi sells, they say Eclipse. When the brand named its new crossover the Eclipse Cross, a lot of past Eclipse car owners, as well as Mitsubishi dealers, were upset that the name is now attached to a crossover, said Don Swearingen, Mitsubishi Motors North America’s chief operating officer until June 1, when he plans to retire. But the name recognition has worked to build awareness of the Eclipse Cross faster.
This was Mitsubishi’s first truly global vehicle and now will be the last from a 100 percent Mitsubishi platform. Slotting between the smaller Outlander Sport and the larger Outlander, the Eclipse Cross was designed to be a catalyst for the brand. It could become its best seller in the U.S., filling a gap where Mitsubishi had nothing. It is the first vehicle to have the company’s Mitsubishi Connect for roadside assistance, remote services, and connection to Google’s Alexa and Amazon Echo.
Mirage
Mitsubishi will keep the Mirage, available as a hatchback or the G4 sedan, but the rest of the lineup will be crossovers. The Mirage has a place in the world as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid on the market, making it popular with value-conscious commuters who cross-shopped it against used vehicles and liked the $14,000 starting price, 10-year powertrain warranty, and 41 mpg on the highway.
Outlander
The next-generation Outlander is due in 2021 and will have moved to an Alliance platform, sharing underpinnings with the Nissan Rogue. It will be longer and wider to better differentiate it from the subcompact Outlander Sport and compact Eclipse Cross. Outlander will again be offered with a plug-in hybrid variant. There are plans for a new Outlander Sport, potentially in 2022, using the Alliance platform that spawned the Nissan Versa, Kicks, and Juke.
Evolution
At the Tokyo auto show in October 2017 Mitsubishi showed the e-Evolution concept as a high-performance all-electric SUV. It will not go into production per se, but its muscular body, small greenhouse, separated headlights, and broken C-pillar to suggest a floating roof are among design cues that that will show up on future crossovers in two or three years.
Pickup truck
The number one request at every dealer meeting is a midsize pickup, and Mitsubishi builds them in Thailand for other markets but a tariff known as the “chicken tax” keeps it from being imported here. A pickup continues to be studied for the U.S. And new CEO Diaz has a lot of truck experience from his days at Ram/Dodge before moving to Nissan to oversee the truck division there. Nissan has the Frontier to work with.
Ironically, the last Mitsubishi pickup was the Raider, based on the Dodge Dakota and built alongside the Dakota from 2005 to 2009. But it must make sense for the Alliance as a whole to get the green light.
“There are people in the Alliance looking at these things,” Swearingen told Motor Trend. If Mitsubishi were to do a pickup, it would have to be a joint venture with Nissan and be built at a Nissan plant in the U.S. Mitsubishi no longer builds vehicles in the U.S., having sold its plant in Normal, Illinois. But if demand warranted North American production, it could seek capacity in a Nissan or Infiniti plant, especially as future products will share platforms. Mitsubishi will have 80 percent of its future products on shared platforms.
Pajero/Montero SUV
Mitsubishi claims the Pajero was the first SUV in 1982. Lack of resources suspended work on a successor so the SUV is being phased out and the Montero Sport will fill the gap in the European lineup. With Alliance resources, perhaps the program could be revived but nothing has been announced.
The Montero name will return as an SUV again, said Guillaume Cartier, Mitsubishi corporate vice president of global sales and marketing, noting the automaker has to solve the problem of having different names for the same product around the world. “Montero is part of the name I would like to build on,” he said in an interview at the Tokyo auto show.
Hybrids and electric vehicles
Future plans call for a plug-in hybrid or pure electric vehicle for every vehicle in the U.S. to go with the conventional gasoline engine. That means Outlander, Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, and a future Evolution would all have an internal combustion engine version as well as a form of electrification. More than half the volume will not be electrified for at least five years which is why there will still be combustion engines for a while.
Mitsubishi has said it will introduce 12 new electric vehicles over six years including two pure EVs after 2020. One is a micro-car for Japan but the other will be a battery-electric Outlander Sport or Eclipse Cross. There would be dual charging stations to accommodate Nissan, which clings to the CHAdeMO fast charging standard that’s popular in Japan but hasn’t been widely adopted in the U.S. As for which company takes the lead on electric vehicles, it will be determined based on each company’s strengths, suggesting Nissan and its Leaf technology will head up pure EVs while Mitsubishi with the Outlander will lead plug-in hybrids.
Alliance impact
Mitsubishi will feel the impact of Alliance almost immediately in cost savings and use of common parts now that it is part of an 11-million-unit company instead of 1 million annual global sales. Shared platforms and future products take longer. The idea is to re-chisel them around Mitsubishi’s strengths and Chairman Carlos Ghosn has said Mitsubishi needs to have its own strategy and independent marketing. One of the first examples: the Eclipse Cross television spot where the soundtrack is a re-imagined, violin-heavy classical rendition of I want to rock by Twisted Sister. Ads will keep running all year, well beyond the initial product launch, in the highest media spend for the brand in 11 years.
Mitsubishi’s targets are sales of 140,000 for the 2018 fiscal year that started April 1 and then 150,000 in the 2019 fiscal year. It is aggressive and means, in a flat U.S. market, that it must steal sales from other brands. Expanding the lineup with the Eclipse Cross and Outlander PHEV makes it possible to have incremental volume.
