Sales have been declining sharply since, as buyers turn their attention away from sedans and toward SUVs. Cadillac's CT4 and CT5, which are being introduced for the 2020 model year, will replace the XTS; the cars will also take the places of the ATS and CTS, which will stop production after 2019, too. The XTS was also a favourite for livery companies, with a stretch limo and hearse being developed. Information about whether or not the CT4 or CT5 would be adopted for livery companies has not been shared. The Oshawa plant also handles the production of the previous-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, both of which will also get the axe at the end of 2019. 2020 Cadillac XT6
General Motors hopes the 2020 XT6 will be the Cadillac of premium midsize SUVs. It’s the third and largest in the newish XT series of SUVs. The XT6 rides well, the center stack isn’t confusing, and the cockpit trim is tasteful. On the downside, the XT6 is hampered by a too-small center-stack display, not enough noise-damping when you tromp the throttle, and poor luggage space with the third row in use.
The XT6 will be challenged to compete against a reinvigorated Lincoln and the Aviator SUV; the usual suspects from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo; and the unusual twin suspects of the dazzling Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride that are punching far above their weight.
The crown jewel of Cadillac technology is not yet available: the Super Cruise system that allows hands-off driving. Super Cruise can’t come to the rescue too soon. It is the best Level 2 technology out there and, yes, Tesla, that includes Autopilot.
The dashboard of the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is a model of simplicity. The 8-inch center stack screen is small, though, compared with the competition that is mostly 10s and 12s.
Fine Highway Cruiser, Decent Handling
In a week of driving the XT6 on all kinds of roads and during the season’s first snowstorm, the 199-inch, 4,500-pound all-wheel-drive SUV (with winter tires) felt composed and confident. Really. The high-up driving position helped see around traffic driving into and out of New York City. (The big fella’s size also earned it a $20 surcharge at a midtown parking garage, even though it classifies as a midsize and it’s less than six feet tall, albeit barely.)
As Car and Driver notes, “The three-row 2020 Cadillac XT6 is a luxury SUV built from mainstream hardware … not that you’d ever realize it.” It rides on GM’s C1XX platform shared with the GMC Acadia on a short wheelbase relative to the length of 113 inches, and to the longer-wheelbase Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse.
It’s also the same size, within an inch, of the Ford Explorer, which shares the same platform as the Lincoln Aviator. The Aviator is the vehicle with which the Lincoln Motor Company reinvented itself: truly luxurious interiors, warning chimes (not synthetic beeps) crafted by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Revel audio, and a surprisingly good ride. It is worlds beyond the Aviator’s more-or-less predecessor, the Lincoln MKT, one of which I own, and which has, well, a truly spacious rear seat, THX audio, and an unforgettable rear roofline.
The current version of CUE, Cadillac User Experience, works well. But the screen is still 8 inches, and it’s feeling small.
First-Class Driver Assists, Technology
HUD and forward collision warning. Good stuff.
The XT6 comes with most of the safety and driver-assist features baked into the list price of $55,000: low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is an extra-cost option, which, we wind up repeating too often in premium-car reviews, comes standard on run-of-the-mill $25,000 Hondas and Toyotas.
The head-up display is first class. When it lights up the windshield with the Brake Now! warning, it cannot be missed.
The leather is gorgeous. The third row looks roomy — in this photo. In real life, the seat pan is low, and knee room is just so-so.
A Big Improvement on Past Caddies
The XT6 may be the best SUV Cadillac ever made. It’s less bulky than Caddy’s first SUV, the Escalade of 1999 to present, which excels at interior space although the third is still snug unless you get the ESV that is 20 inches longer. The XT6 avoided the cramped rear legroom of the SRX that ran from 2004 to 2016. If it existed in a vacuum – no Lincoln, no international automaker competitors – Cadillac would be riding high.

XT6 In the Cadillac Hierarchy
The Escalade measures 204 inches long (the stretched Escalade ESV, 224 inches), and for many folks, that’s too big. The XT series was intended to provide a newer interpretation of Cadillac SUVs in less fortress-like vehicles: XT4 compact SUV (181 inches, and a vast improvement on the SRX with annoyingly snug back seat room), XT5 midsize SUV (190 inches), and large midsize XT6 (199 inches long, and 11 inches lower than Escalade’s 81-inch height).
Should You Buy?
The 2020 Cadillac XT6 has been on the market for a half-year. It is offered in two trim lines, Premium Luxury, which is front-or all-wheel-drive, and Sport, which is AWD-only. Cadillac says the Premium Luxury will be the bigger seller since you can get most of the Sport offerings.
There is a long and interlocking options list which, when you choose option B, often undoes option package A. They can also bring you into the upper seventies on price. You almost certainly want adaptive cruise control because the XT6 is a great highway cruiser, possibly the camera-rear-view-mirror option, along with things like power-vented front seats and heated row-two outboard seats.
My test car, an XT6 Premium Luxury AWD, came in at $63,810, including $995 freight, $2,530 for an Enhanced Visibility and Technology Package (rear camera mirror, an 8-inch LCD in the middle of the instrument panel, auto park assist, useful surround cameras and recorder, and HUD), $1,300 for the Driver Assist Package that gives you ACC and enhanced auto emergency braking, $2,000 for polished rims, and etcetera. It could have been more.
The XT6 is a very good vehicle for a Cadillac, whether sedan or SUV. But at this point, Cadillac has been leapfrogged by Lincoln. And the Hyundai/Kia twins are nice, luxurious, and affordable. The addition of Super Cruise in 2020 will make the XT6 much more competitive.

Cadillac XT6 Sport, NASCAR et Mustang Mach E
Le 20 novembre 2019
Il y a quelques semaines de cela, j’ai eu l’opportunité de conduire brièvement le nouveau VUS XT6 de Cadillac. Je vous en avais d’ailleurs glissé un mot. Heureusement, GM du Canada m’a permis de reprendre ce Cadillac pour un véritable essai d’une semaine. Et il a neigé, par-dessus le marché!
Le problème avec Cadillac, c’est que son constructeur n’a pas nécessairement suivi le «mode» en ce qui a trait aux VUS ou VUM (c’est selon). En effet, Cadillac s’est acharné à réviser ses berlines se fiant surtout à son grand VUS Escalade pour satisfaire se clientèle qui lorgnait de plus en plus vers les VUS-VUM européens (dont les Audi Q7 et compagnie). Malgré la production de la plus petite XT5 (née SRX) ou encore l’encore plus petit XT4, il manquait des modèles spécifiques chez Cadillac, surtout des VUM à sept passagers autre que l’imposant Escalade. Puis, Cadillac voit déjà venir le nouveau Lincoln Aviator qui, selon les tout récents reportages, devrait connaître un grand succès sur le marché. Et celui-ci sera livrable avec la capacité d’y accepter six ou sept passagers à son bord. Donc, la marque de luxe de GM nous propose maintenant le XT6, un grand VUM pouvant répondre à ces exigences.
Rapidement dit, le XT6 est ni plus ni moins qu’une version Cadillac de la Buick Enclave ou de la Chevrolet Traverse. Cela vous donnera une idée du gabarit de la XT-6. Son avant avec l’immense calandre et les phares verticaux lui donnent une ressemblance aux autos du même constructeur. Toutefois, l’imposante carrosserie presque carrée nous rappelle qu’il s’agit d’une camionnette, un VUM basé sur un châssis d’auto. Le XT6 est disponible en deux finitions, Premium Luxury et Sport. Celui qui m’a été confié est le Sport.

Vu que ce Cadillac repose, je le répète, sur une plateforme d’automobile, il ne faut pas se surprendre d’y voir une traction avant. Mais vu que c’est un VUS de luxe, il ne faut se surprendre d’y constater la possibilité de passer à la traction intégrale sur commande. Cette opération se fait grâce à un bouton de commande électrique au centre de la console. Ce bouton permet au conducteur de choisir entre la traction avant, la traction intégrale, la configuration Sport et celle dite…«Off-Road» (je doute que bien des utilisateurs de XT6 profite régulièrement, voire même occasionnellement, de cette fonction). La suspension électronique réagira alors en conséquence. Elle sera plus ferme en Sport et Off-Road mais j’en ai préféré les modes traction avant et intégrale pour mes déplacements surtout urbains.

Le seul moteur disponible sous le capot de ce Cadillac est le traditionnel V6 «corporatif» de GM, un moteur bien connu de 310 chevaux et 271 li-pi de couple (ce qui se traduit par 400 Newton-mètre- en vérité 367- en mesure métrique de là l’ornementation 400 à l’arrière). Il ne vient qu’avec la boîte automatique à neuf rapports de GM.

L’intérieur de ce Cadillac est vraiment vaste. Le tableau de bord est bien défini et surtout bien aménagé. Dans la version Sport, les touches de finition sont en imitation de fibre de carbone (elles sont en bois sur la Premium Luxury). L’instrumentation électronique est complète et facile à lire. Encore une fois, j’ai eu droit à l’affichage à tête haute (HUD) de la vitesse et autres informations en réflexion dans le pare-brise ce que je préconise au nom de la sécurité. L’écran au centre (avec le système d’infodivertissement CUE révisé, CUS voulant dire Cadillac User Experience) est suffisamment grand pour être facilement consulté. Le levier de vitesse à commande électrique est installé dans la console centrale où se trouve certaines commandes dont celle des modes de suspension et de traction et une molette pour les diverses fonctions de la radio et autres. Le volant contient également sa part de commandes tant pour le régulateur de vitesse que pour le bloc d’information central. Incidemment, ma voiture d’essai n’avait pas l’option Super Cruise Celle-ci devrait être disponible sur des versions 2020 à venir.
Les sièges d’avant sont, bien entendu confortables (ils sont chauffants et ventilés). Il faut mentionner le confort proposé par la banquette centrale (en option, on pourrait y commander deux sièges baquets mais on y perdrait une place pour les passagers).

On y trouve beaucoup d’espace et de la place pour les jambes et la tête, même s’il y avait un toit ouvrant optionnel. Enfin, la véritable nouveauté pour un VUM de Cadillac, c’est la banquette tout à l’arrière (divisible) bonne pour deux passagers Ils y seront relativement à l’aise mais une fois en place, elle y enlève beaucoup d’espace de chargement. Toutefois, vu que la plupart des propriétaires de tels Cadillac garderont certes cette banquette refermée profitant alors d’un véritable gouffre pour y placer plusieurs bagages. Et s’ils auraient besoin d’encore plus d’espace cargo ils n’auront qu’à rabattre les dossiers du siège du centre ce qui augmentera encore plus l’espace de chargement.

Une fois ceux-ci rabattus (par commande électrique) , on y retrouve un bon compartiment pour le cargo et plus encore si l’on rabat ceux du centre !)
Évidemment, le hayon arrière est à commande électrique avec ouvertures programmables. Toutefois, il y aurait une petite note négative. Même si la finition m’a semblé soignée, le choix des matériaux m’est apparu moins impressionnant, d’un toucher moins agréable que ceux de ses concurrents dont les Lexus RX350 L, Acura MDX, Kia Telluride ou encore Hyundai Palisade.
Sur la route
Néanmoins, c’est sur la route que ce Cadillac m’a dévoilé ses qualités. Non pas que le véhicule soit un «foudre de guerre» (il accélère de 0 à 100 km/h en quelque huit secondes) et ses reprises ne sont pas si spectaculaires (surtout que le moteur gronde très fort lorsqu’il est poussé à bout!), mais il est agréable à conduire malgré son gabarit plutôt impressionnant. Le garer n’est pas toujours facile, surtout dans un stationnement de centre commercial parce que, entre autre, le rayon de braquage est grand mais au moins, sur le modèle Sport, du moins, la caméra placée à l’avant s’active automatiquement lorsque le véhicule est trop près des obstacles ce qui donne au conducteur une bonne image d’où il se dirige et les distances des obstacles.
Le Cadillac Xt6 n’est pas petit et il n’est surtout pas léger (de 4400 à 4700 livres, selon le modèle et ses options). En mode «normal», ce grand VUM est doux et son comportement routier est agréable. La visibilité y est très bonne. Question freinage, je n’ai pas noté de faiblesse quoiqu’il ne s’agisse pas de performances sportives. La direction, par contre, est relativement précise.

La neige s’est mise à tomber durant ma semaine d’essai. Heureusement, GM du Canada avait vu à installer des pneus d’hiver à mon XT6 d’essai. C’étaient des Continental WinterContact. Bien souvent, j’ai critiqué cette marque de pneus négativement. Mais pas cette fois! Le mode de conduite ayant été placé en 4WD (plutôt AWD!), le grand XT6 a accéléré, freiné et tourné avec assurance. Je me sentais au volant du parfait véhicule pour la saison froide. Comme vous vous en doutez, je n’ai pas exploité la fonction Off-Road. Tout d’abord, je le répète, j’ai de la difficulté à m’imaginer que les propriétaires de XT6 utilisent leur beau Cadillac à 80 000 $ à cet effet puis, mon terrain d’essai de prédilection chez mon ami Pierre Archambault étant sous le neige, j’avais surtout peur de m’enliser dans la boue (un sentier de pierre lui aurait été préférable). Toutefois, si une Volvo Cross-Country était capable d’y rouler (sur terrain sec), je ne verrais pas pourquoi le XT6 n’aurait pas été capable (…par contre, je n’aurais pas osé rapporter un XT6 plein de boue chez GM…il m’aurait fallu le nettoyer en profondeur…).
En ce qui a trait à la consommation, n’ayant fait que des déplacements urbains…dans une certaine neige profonde, de surcroit (donc en 4WD), je ne m’attendais pas à des exploits de la part de ce lourd véhicule. J’ai donc fait 17,2 l/100 km après mon calcul à la pompe alors que l’ordinateur de bord indiquait 15,4. Toutefois, je reste persuadé qu’en situation estivale, ce Cadillac devrait faire beaucoup mieux. En passant, n’oublions pas que le XT6 est capable de tirer des remorques allant jusqu’à 4000 livres.
Le prix de base d’un Cadillac XT6 Sport AWD est de 63 798 $. Si on lui ajoute la peinture à trois couches (1395 $), le système CUE d’infodivertissement avec GPS (1250 $), l’ensemble de finition Platinum (4265 $), l’ensemble Night Vision (2300 $), les phares spéciaux (805 $), l’ensemble de remorquage (750 $), la toile cache-bagage (90 $) l’ensemble de visibilité améliorée (2 705 $), l’assistance à la conduite ( 2275 $), la toujours aussi ridicule taxe d’accise pour le climatiseur (100 $) et les frais de transport (2100 $), on en arrive à un prix final de 81 823 $ (plus les taxes locales!).
Le Cadillac XT6 saura-t-il se mesurer à la vive concurrence auquel il est confronté? Difficile d’y répondre. Toutefois, j’ose espérer que les clients potentiels qui iront l’essayer seront tout aussi impressionnés que moi lorsqu’ils en feront l’essai. J’ai tellement apprécié le silence de roulement et la rigidité de la caisse du véhicule que ces qualités devraient primer sur l’allure extérieure un peu trop discrète du véhicule. Une chose est certaine, le XT6 m’a beaucoup plus impressionné que le XT4 (trop de bruits de caisse) et le XT5 (détails de finition) et je ne serais pas gêné de le recommander.
Une finale NASCAR des plus ennuyantes
Rarement je dis cela mais cette fois, il faut l’avouer, je n’ai rarement vu de courses de NASCAR aussi ennuyante que celle de dimanche dernier à la télé. Dire que c’était la finale de la saison est une véritable insulte aux amateurs de la série. OK, Kyle Busch (Camry no 18) a gagné la course (parade?) et le championnat de la série mais il a eu cette victoire presque sur un plateau d’argent. Vivement la saison prochaine où la finale se fera à Phoenix au lieu de la piste soporifique de Homestead en Floride.

D’autre part, je suis un peu déçu pour le Canadien Stewart Friesen qui n’a pas réussi son pari de gagner le championnat en camionnette Gander. Ce titre a plutôt été au vétéran Matt Crafton (Ford F-150) alors qu’en Xfiniti, Tyle Reddick (Chevrolet Camaro) a encore été couronné champion. J’ai hâte à l’année prochaine alors que notre compatriote Raphael Lessard sera au volant d’un pick-up Toyota Tundra (de l’équipe de Kyle Busch) dans la série Gander!...
La Mustang Mach-E : la surprise de l’année?

Si vous suivez un tantinet le monde de l’automobile, vous n’êtes pas sans savoir que Ford a dévoilé cette semaine ce qui devrait être la ou le?) Mustang Mach-E, un VUS à quatre portes totalement électrique pour 2021. Un VUS Mustang? Électrique, en plus de cela? Oui! Et j’y crois.
À quoi pouvait-on penser chez Ford? En fait, le choix est un des plus intelligents (et je suis certain que d’autres constructeurs le suivront). Les ventes des automobiles sont en déclin, en fort déclin. Et plus récemment, les ventes de la Mustang ont commencé à fléchir. Mais la marque fait toujours rêver. Ceux qui désireraient une Mustang dans leur entrée de garage ne sauraient que faire d’un coupé (ou cabrio) à deux portes bon que pour deux personnes (quatre en forçant) avec un V8 énergivore qui fait du bruit et qui est à propulsion en plus. Mais si cette (ou ce) Mustang était à quatre portes, pour cinq passagers avec la traction intégrale mais électrique avec une autonomie de plus de 400 kilomètres…et la puissance en plus?...Wow! La marque Mustang pourrait certes rapporter gros à Ford. Et c’est probablement ce qu’elle fera au cours des prochaines années.
Si le Mach-E arrivera de base avec un seul moteur électrique de l’équivalent de 282 chevaux aux roues arrière seulement, il y aura aussi des versions à deux moteurs électriques (donc quatre roues motrices) incluant une version GT avec une puissance équivalente à plus de 450 chevaux capable de battre des VUS Porsche (électriques)…
Pour le moment, Ford annonce un prix d’environ 50 045 $ CA pour la version de base. On sait aussi que les versions GT iront chercher dans les 80 000 $$. Mais c’est encore moins que pour un Porsche.
Avant de critiquer Ford pour son choix (je m’imagine que les coupés et cabrios Mustang seront toujours produits), attendez d’en voir leur résultat. Vous changerez peut-être d’idée…et certains autres constructeurs aussi!
Autres déceptions…
Si vous vous souvenez, il n’y a pas si longtemps, je vous disais que je voyais mon petit monde automobile s’effriter lentement. Eh bien, j’en rajoute! En effet, la semaine dernière, je recevais le magazine hebdomadaire Auto Week auquel je suis abonné depuis des lunes. Au haut de la page couverture : Final Issue! Auto Week n’existe plus qu’en version informatisée. Fini le magazine.
C’est un peu comme Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Road and Track (qui, le mois dernier, était consacré aux camions de tout gabarit incluant une grande photo de deux poids lourds en accélération au Rodéo de Notre-Dame-du-Nord!) et bientôt Automobile que je ne retrouve plus qu’à des pharmacies locales!
Comme bien du monde, j’aime toujours les numéros en papier, même pour les livres. Pourtant, ce ne sont pas les tablettes qui manquent ici! (Soupir!... Autre gros soupir!)
