Electric Vehicles, All sides
Engines to electric motors, Fuels to batteries, Is it the time for us to change our car’s fuel source by 2021?
Image via Unsplash
Electric cars or Electric vehicles aka (EV) run on batteries “energy stored in batteries”, Electric vehicles uses one or more than one electric motors or traction motors for driving force. Unlike those conventional vehicles, BEV’s (Battery Electric Vehicles) can be driven without any gasoline or diesel, they generate power from batteries fitted inside. However, all electric cars do not work the same way!
Varieties of EV
(HEV’s) Hybrid Electric Vehicle is powered by both electricity and fuel, it starts by using electric power and runs at a specific speed limit but as the load increases the internal computer automatically shifts it to petrol or diesel depending on fuel system. Electric energy in HEV’s is produced through its own braking system called [regenerative braking system] while braking it creates heat and store energy in batteries.
Hyundai Ionic hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Prius Prime Hybrid are the finest examples of Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
(PHEVs) Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles comes with plug-in charging feature PHEVs can be recharged by plugging into an external source electricity. It can travel decent distances without using the internal combustion engine (ICE), PHEV out flow from car’s tailpipe to generators powering electricity grid.
Best-selling models of PHEVs are Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV, Chevrolet Volt Family and BMW 330e.
(BEVs) Battery Electric Vehicles are complete electric cars without having any exhaust pipe, combustion engine and fuel tank. BEVs traveling range (miles) depends on the model, with plus 65 kilowatt hours Lithium ion battery BEVs are easy to charge/ fast charge wherever possible.
Jaguar I-Pace, Audi E-Tron and Tesla Model S are market leaders of fully electric vehicles.
Battery electric cars has been dominating the market for many years grabbing customer’s attention and growth in purchases:
Statistics from statista.com
In 2018 almost 3.3 million battery electric vehicles were in operation all over the world, the reason behind the growing purchase rate of BEVs is “less maintenance and less cost” ownership of electric vehicle will not cost much comparably to internal combustion engine.
Why do I switch to EVs?
Switching to EV is more than individual benefits, EVs lower emissions and save a lot of money, charging instead of fueling offers some profit in this case, which you can never get from ICEs. Electric cars response very quick, fast pick up acceleration and have a really good torque.
There are great names who has produced some quality models in last few years, and American electric car company Tesla Inc. is leading the market:
Statistics via statista
Climate view on EVs
Electric cars are not just attractive but beneficial too, with all smart features EVs are also harmless for environment, they radiate less air pollutants and greenhouse gases than a conventional car. EVs considered to be the most clean and green production from manufacturers.
With no exhaust silencers it is impossible to generate air pollutants, EV radiates no carbon dioxide while driving, in simple words use of EVs will result in clean and green streets all over the city.
Apart from this, it is for sure that covid-19 has already filtered climate in past months, such as lockdowns, and decrease in production of many major industries, the quality of air has ameliorated and same goes with water pollution which has also decreased this year, So it might be the perfect time for many firms to come up with the best of both worlds.
Pros and cons of EVs
Aside from benefits there are some disadvantages of electric vehicles as well, shorter range than fuel-powered cars, can be very costly if the battery fails, time taking while recharging the batteries, and they are usually expensive typically for a conventional car owner. PROS – the top of the list is that EVs are environmental friendly, “cheap” in sense of recharging batteries rather than filling the tank, Almost maintenance free – less maintenance required than gas-powered car, DC charging facility, Soundless drive comparably to conventional vehicles and at many routes, there are special lanes on highways for electric vehicles.
EVs in Pakistan
Similarly with fast growth of Electric vehicles globally, the global electric vehicle market is expected to reach 802.81 billion dollars by the end of 2027. Meanwhile in Pakistan EV technology counted less than 10% in all cities, but the country has plans to bring 30% of electric vehicles in use on roads by 2030,
Owning an electric vehicle in Pakistan can also be risky in many ways. The majority of people drive conventional cars because the country has full services for these cars, there are number of (HEVs) Hybrid electric vehicle users, driving Toyota Prius, Toyota Aqua and Honda Vezel. At the end of the year 2019 BMW launched its full electric car in Pakistan for the first time ever, around 95 lac rupees, costs an arm and a leg for residents and also it didn’t get any fame around natives.
Image via unsplash.com
EV freaks can face some major troubles in Pakistan as for example Lack of charging stations, fully electric vehicle in low budget, stressful road trips because of “if batteries depletes” and it’s heavy cost if batteries fail at some point, keeping rising petroleum prices in mind public would love to switch on EV technology as SAIC motors are launching an affordable MG ZS electric vehicle this year in Pakistan but the care services won’t be pleasing. The government has to work on EV infrastructures and invest in charging stations around all cities.
Besides all comfort seating, 5 star features and top notch technology a car driver need essentials and facilities for his car, I myself would love to have Porsche Taycan for fun and status but what about its necessities? Which my homeland is unable to provide at the moment. But the govt. has got your back if you step back from full electric vehicles and set eyes on Hybrid technology.
Will 2021 is going to be the year where people worldwide will be freed from noisy engines?

Kia Niro EV SX Touring: To EV or Not to EV
Words and Pics By Michael Hozjan
As I write this, the Quebec Government decreed to ban the sale of gas powered cars by 2035. While I love electric vehicles, I don’t like being told what I can and cannot buy.
The population is surprisingly quickly embracing Electric Vehicles. For the first quarter of this year EVs accounted for 3.8% of light vehicles sold in Canada, up from 3% in 2019 and 2% in 2018. I’ve seen three of my friends make the switch. All of them reside in Quebec where the provincial EV subsidy is the highest in Canada - $8,000, combined with the $5,000 federal subsidy and the EVs are starting to look mighty attractive. Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford pulled a Donald Trump move and axed the rebate leaving BC as the only other province with a subsidy program.
Happily the selection of EVs is growing, and includes some major players, most noticeably the Tesla, Chevrolet’s Bolt, Hyundai’s Kona EV and Nissan’s Leaf. Not to be left out is a vehicle I’ve been waiting to get my hands on for a while – the Kia Niro EV. Having driven and fallen in love with the hybrid rendition I was curious to see how the EV would to stack up. The hybrid hits the mark in all the right spots; it’s a smartly styled practical wagon with ample cargo and people room with creature comforts, is reasonably priced and of course there’s Kia’s warranty. Pre-rebate pricing for the Niro EV starts at $46,905 for the base EX model and jumps to $56,405 for the SX Touring, more on this later.
Thankfully the EV takes nothing away from the hybrid other than the gas powerplant. Go power is supplied by a single electric motor generating 201 horses and 291 lb-ft of torque, propelling the front wheels through a single speed reduction gear transmission. It’ll send the wagon down the road from 0 to 100 kph in just under seven seconds. That’s Veloster Turbo and Civic Si territory kiddies! Now you know why I like EVs.
Trims
Typically Kia, even the entry-level EX comes well equipped with heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, a 7-inch digital driver display, electronic stability control and a rear-view camera. Upgrading to the EX Premium adds an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front buckets and rear bench, a power sunroof, wireless charging, a larger 10.25” display, premium Harmon Kardon sound system, smart cruise, LED headlights, chrome trim plus a slew of driving aides. To say your getting your dollar’s worth would be an understatement.
Above and below: The 10.25 inch screen is full of helpful info including distance to the nearest charging station.
On the Road
I’ve already mentioned the Niro EV’s quick acceleration times, but, as Bogart would say, “Don’t amount to a hill of beans” if you can’t put it on the ground, and the Niro does just that. There’s a well-balanced, solid feel, it’s nimble around town yet takes to the lakeside twisties with complete composure. The batteries and the low position of the electric motor means a lower center of gravity, which translates to better handling. The regenerative braking isn’t overpowering so you don’t feel like you’re being pulled back when you step on the binders.
You can actually modulate the brake regeneration through the steering wheel paddles. There are three levels with Level 3 slowing you down and recharging hard enough when you let off the pedal that you rarely have to use the brake. It takes some getting used to and I suspect the novelty will wear off quickly.
The Greenhouse
The attractive blue pin striping that we find on the Niro’s lower front grille draws you inside with blue piping on the seats. Those seats are comfortable while holding you firmly in place. Compared to my buddy’s Tesla Model 3 the Niro is quieter. The dash and controls are well laid out and the interior is a mix of soft touch plastic and shiny black piano plastic. It all works together to give the dash a clean uncluttered appearance.
There’s a heat pump to prevent range loss when you’ve got the heat turned up and a driver only climate control button to save on heat, which I noticed only after I lost heat in the cabin for about ten minutes.
There’s a generous amount of head and legroom for front seat occupants and while the adults in the back may enjoy the headroom thanks to the wagon’s roof, but a raised floor to compensate for the battery makes foot/legroom best left to the kiddies. Cargo space with the rear bench up beats the Tesla Model 3 (18.5 cu.ft. to 15 cu.ft.) fold the back seat flat and cargo room blows to 53 cu.ft.
Above: Kia smartly put the recharge plug in the front of the vehicle allowing easy access to all types of stations.
The all-important Charge Times
The Niro shares its 64.0 kWh Lithium Ion Polymer battery pack with its corporate cousin, the Kona EV and sibling Soul EV. It beats the Nissan Leaf’s and Tesla Model 3’s for bragging rights of 385 km range when fully charged. The battery can be recharged using either a 120-volt or 240-volt connection, but the two connections offer drastically different charge times. On a 240-volt connection, the car can be recharged in about nine hours. You’ll need to equip your castle with a 240V outlet. I had no such luck, reverting to the 120-volt trickle charge meant waiting days to get it back to full charge. (See photos)
Petro Canada saw the writing on the wall a couple of years back and had the foresight to install Level 3 fast chargers. They can be found along the 401 in the Montreal - Toronto corridor and the Niro has an in dash direction finder to your nearest charging station. While I didn’t get the opportunity to test them, the owner of my local Petro Canada and host to several Adrenaline Klassic Kar Shows, in Les Cedres, Quebec tells me that the battery should be fully charged in about 20 minutes, or the time it takes to sit down for a fast food meal.
Quebecers also have the option of the 3,000 plus public charging stations of the Circuit Electric (Electric Circuit) infrastructure network that’s scattered around the province. A free mobile app helps locating them. But buyer be ware, if you’re not a member the costs can add up rather quickly. Similarly the U.S. has ChargePoint Level 2 charging stations. Like gas pump prices, the cost of charging can vary between different EV charging stations and networks.
Conclusion:
While EVs are a lot better than what they were just a few years ago, their biggest hick up remains fast charging times. I can not see myself stopping repeatedly for 20 to 30 minutes on my way to Detroit or New York and back. Hence my preference for the internal combustion engine - QC government or not. On the plus side with a 385 km range on a full charge means you are good for three or four days of normal commuting before you need to fill it up.
If you’re looking to move into EVs do yourself a favor, and take a Niro EV for a spin. You’ll be surprised by the all around maturity of the Niro. Yes my tester’s price was up there, but it has all the right goodies and with provincial and federal incentives the sticker shock (no pun intended) is lessened.

2018 Nissan Leaf: Why 29,990 is More Important to Some Than 150
The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and 2018 Tesla Model 3 are good cars that happen to be fully electric. What’s even more extraordinary is that those cars’ base prices are within reach of the average new-car consumer today, though that’s only true of the Tesla if you can patiently leave your name on a waiting list before wanting to bolt. So far, neither car has attempted to reach the Nissan Leaf’s lower price point, and an extraordinary car means nothing to new-car consumers if they can’t afford it. That’s where the 2018 Nissan Leaf enters the picture. Now with a projected EPA driving range of 150 miles, the Leaf easily leaps ahead of the 2017 model’s 107 miles, as well as the ranges of every other EV currently available that’s not a Tesla (the Model 3 is projected to have a range around 225 miles) or Chevrolet (the Bolt EV is rated at 238 miles of range). Well, for now. Ford has confirmed interest in building electric cars (including a 300-mile electric SUV), Hyundai and Kia are pushing harder on EVs (the Ioniq EV already has a 124-mile range), and EVs will become an increasingly important part of Volkswagen’s future. So the EV market is expanding, but many new-car buyers can’t wait a year or more for a car to become available. Many others aren’t willing to pay for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s $37,495 and 2018 Tesla Model 3’s $36,200 base price. The 2018 Nissan Leaf falls far short of those two in terms of EV range, but it also falls well short in price. The 2018 Leaf starts at $29,990, or $30,875 including destination. That puts the 150-mile Leaf more than $5,000 below the Model 3 and more than $6,000 below the Bolt EV. In this price class, that’s a ton of money saved. Will Chevrolet respond by adjusting the price of the Bolt EV, just as the Volt plug-in got price cuts after its initial release? With so many more EVs available compared to five and 10 years ago, we’ll see how the market reacts. Tesla recently cut the price of its most powerful Model S and Model X variants, but with the Model 3’s long waiting list, we’d be surprised to see any price cuts for now. In our thorough 2018 Nissan Leaf First Drive review, we called the new Leaf “satisfyingly quicker and more responsive” than its predecessor, with a quiet interior and “supple yet controlled ride quality.” That car is going up against our 2017 Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the also superb Tesla Model 3. Before the 2019 Nissan Leaf arrives with a more powerful variant with more range to go head to head with those two, the Leaf will also do battle with EVs in the low $30,000 range. The impressive 200-plus-mile range of the Bolt EV and Model 3 should help convince more buyers to make the switch to a fully electric car, but when your budget doesn’t allow for a near-$40,000 car (you’ll pay extra on the Model 3 for any exterior color besides black), the less expensive 2018 Nissan Leaf is more significant than its 150-mile range might suggest. You’ll still need to like the car itself, but simply having a low $30,000 base price opens the door for some, especially those who were already set on an EV. Lots of factors go into new-car purchases, from styling and performance to interior quality, safety tech, and, perhaps most important, budget. Whether the 2018 Nissan Leaf is passed by in favor of more expensive competitors with more impressive overall driving ranges remains to be seen; the sales battle begins when the Leaf goes on sale early in 2018. Read more on the 2018 Nissan Leaf: 2018 Nissan Leaf First Drive Review Eight Nerdy Things to Like About the 2018 Nissan Leaf The post 2018 Nissan Leaf: Why 29,990 is More Important to Some Than 150 appeared first on Motor Trend.

GM/UAW Strike: Will the Strike Save the Cadillac CT6?
General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck and Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plants are reportedly in play as part of the ongoing contract negotiations between GM and the United Auto Workers union, whose roughly 49,000 members nationwide went on strike against the automaker at just after midnight Monday morning. It’s a development that offers a glimmer of hope for one of GM’s better cars, the Cadillac CT6, which has been slated to be discontinued.
GM has been in the process of winding down the Hamtramck plant’s operations, but reportedly offered to keep it open to build an electric pickup truck there as part of last-minute bargaining just before UAW workers hit the picket lines, according to the Associated Press. Hamtramck, which is the only remaining automotive assembly plant within Detroit’s borders, had been previously classified as “unallocated” for future product when GM announced budget cuts of around $6 billion earlier this year to take effect by the end of 2019. Along with the reported Hamtramck concession, GM is also said to have pledged to build a battery plant next to the Lordstown factory. The automaker has been in negotiations to sell Lordstown, which opened in 1966, to The Workhorse Group, a startup that wants to build an EV pickup of its own there.
By the end of April 2019, GM had transferred 593 workers from Detroit-Hamtramck to other factories, as the plant assembled the last Chevrolet Volts and Buick LaCrosses there. But 700 workers remain to assemble Cadillac CT6 and Chevy Impala sedans.
Here’s where it gets interesting for enthusiasts. GM just built a small run of the 2019 Cadillac CT6-V, a $90,000-plus full-size sport sedan with Cadillac’s all-new, hand-built 4.2-liter twin-turbo “Blackwing” V-8 rated for 550 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. But by the time I got to drive the 2019 Cadillac CT6-V and its CT6 Platinum sibling with a slightly detuned version of Blackwing, the car was scheduled to end production when the Hamtramck plant closed in January 2020. GM brass said it could not find another assembly plant to build the CT6, including versions powered by the milder 500-hp Blackwing or GM’s 3.6-liter and twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6s.
Since it went on sale for the 2017 model year, the CT6 has claimed the mantle as Cadillac’s flagship. Without it, Cadillac again retrenches from plans to gradually grow its reputation as a direct competitor for the German luxury brands.
Any future for the CT6 hinges on negotiations with the UAW about what happens with Detroit-Hamtramck, though at this stage of the talks, there are too many variables in play to predict the car’s ultimate fate. It’s obviously a sufficiently flexible plant to have once accommodated big Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac sedans as well as the electrified Volt (the Cadillac ELR was also briefly built there). For sure, initial volumes for a GM EV pickup from Detroit-Hamtramck would be low, but will the contract call for the plant’s current employment level of 700 UAW members, or would it be closer to the 1,300 it once had?
That question is tied into other, more substantive points of negotiation. The UAW wants GM to reduce or eliminate its temporary worker program, which allows the company to adjust production levels to better match the ebb and flow of certain models.
Even after all the efficiencies GM realized after the 2009 bankruptcy, when UAW and salaried workers alike suffered major cuts as the company restructured, the U.S. auto industry was left with too much capacity. The industry is underutilized by about 3 million units, the Center for Automotive Research’s Kristin Dziczek told NPR. GM accounts for 1 million of that. Lordstown, for example, had the capacity to annually build 400,000 units of the recently dropped Chevy Cruze. It wouldn’t have been a bad call for GM to withhold any offers to keep open any plants not allocated for new products.
Conversely, GM posted a $10.8-billion pretax profit for 2018, and there’s no better time for the UAW to get what it can out of the automaker (as well as Ford Motor Company and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, when they generally fall into line after the model is set by the strike target). But like every other major automaker, GM is preparing for a future in which fat pickup truck and SUV profits will be devoured by the cost of bringing electric and semi-autonomous vehicles to market. The burgeoning UAW scandal, in which a federal investigation has extended all the way up to union president Dennis Williams, gives GM a bit of an edge this time.
No matter what happens, I predict this will be the last old-line, traditional contract negotiations between a U.S. automaker and the UAW. While fate of the Cadillac CT6 is a trivial piece of the high stakes bargaining now taking place, from an enthusiast perspective at least, its continued production could do a lot to improve the reputation of GM’s luxury division.

GM joins Tesla in losing value of electric vehicle tax credit
Tax credits for buying a Chevrolet Bolt, left, or Volt are going down on April 1. (Photo courtesy Driving Canada)
The climate change debate rages on in political circles, but on U.S. roadways, many folks are voting, as the old saying goes, with their pocketbooks. They're buying more energy efficient and less polluting cars.
And Uncle Sam has been part of that sales campaign.
A federal tax credit that can be as much as $7,500 has convinced some Americans to trade in their gas guzzlers for electric autos.
That tax break, however, doesn't last forever. Once an electric vehicle becomes popular, based on its total number of sales, the tax credit is reduced.
That happened first to Tesla, which lost some of its credit value on Jan. 1.
General Motors joins the more sales/less tax break club in less than a week. The credit for its electric vehicles, both of which wear the company's Chevrolet bowtie badge, will start phasing out on April 1.
Credit sales pitch: The biggest overall winner has been Tesla, the electric auto brainchild of billionaire businessman Elon Musk.
But more mainstream U.S. car companies are following the Tesla route, albeit while hedging their bets.
American drivers remain committed to SUVs, in part because gas prices have been relatively low for years, so the U.S. auto industry has shifted its production to those models.
However, smaller and less fossil fuel dependent vehicles are popular globally. To compete in those markets, American automakers also are keeping some electric vehicles, referred in the industry as EVs, on their assembly lines.
They're hoping that U.S. drivers, at least those in more congested cities, will eventually trade in their large autos for the smaller EVs.
Government help for domestic market: In the short-term, Uncle Sam has been helping underwrite that U.S. EV sales plan.
The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 included a tax credit for, in the legislation's words, plug-in electric drive motor vehicles. Over the years, the credit has been extended, basically offering EV buyers a tax break for purchasing eligible passenger vehicles and light trucks.
It's not a perfect sales solution. The tax credit doesn't affect an auto's purchase price, but rather the buyer collects it against his or her taxes when filing a tax return the year after buying the EV.
But it still is used as a sale pitch. And the opportunity to reduce your overall tax bill by as much as $7,500 — remember, a tax credit offers a dollar-for-dollar reduction of the total tax you owe — for buying an IRS-approved EV could help convince a buyer to choose one electric car make over another.
More sales means smaller credit: All good things and many tax breaks, however, eventually must end. That's the case for EV credit, which is losing its value for Teslas and Chevy Volts and Bolts.
Like the tax credit for hybrid vehicles upon which the EV break was based, the all-electric auto tax credit is phased out once a car maker hits certain a specific sales mark. For EVs that's 200,000.
Last year, Tesla became the first to face the credit phaseout when it reported to the IRS that it had sold more than 200,000 EV-credit-eligible vehicles eligible during the third quarter of 2018.
Tesla credit reductions schedule: That triggered the start of Tesla's credit phaseout, beginning with EVs sold on and after Jan. 1, 2019. From the start of this year through June, the Tesla tax credit will be $3,750.
Tesla Model S
On July 1, the credit will be reduced to $1,875 for the remainder of the year. After Dec. 31, Tesla buyers won't get a federal tax credit.
GM credit reductions schedule: Now GM joins Tesla in the EV credit reduction. When GM sold its 200,000th qualifying electric car in the final quarter of 2018, that started the credit drop clock ticking.
You basically have this week to get the full $7,500 for buying a new Chevy Bolt or Volt. Come next Monday, April 1, the full $7,500 federal tax credit for GM electric cars will no longer apply.
From April 1 through Sept. 30, the credit will be $3,750 for the GM EVs.
On Oct. 1, the credit will drop to $1,875 for the next two quarters. After March 31, 2020, there will no longer be an EV tax credit for the GM autos.
Political fight ahead: The phaseout of the credits could be the least of the EV market's problems.
Many on Capitol Hill are opposed to the tax breaks. Some don't think it's a good general tax policy. Other think the auto industry has received enough help in recent years. Some believe the credit is a costly sop to the climate change sector.
Congressional Democrats have leaned toward making the credits unlimited or extending them for another period of time to renew the benefits for successful EV producers like GM or Tesla.
House and Senate Republicans tend to favor ending the EV program, although some int he GOP have argued for one final renewal period so that they will uniformly expire next decade.
Donald J. Trump has chosen his side. Trump's latest federal budget proposal calls for an end to the credit. The budget's argument is that it would save the United States $2.5 billion in the next 10 years.
If, however, you are committed to an electric auto and don't want to wait on the fate of the EV tax credit, you probably should act now. Like this week if you're leaning toward an electric Chevy.

GM is transforming Cadillac into an electric brand
General Motors is turning Cadillac into its lead electric vehicle brand in a bid to compete against Tesla as well as a host of other automakers bringing EVs onto the market.
Plans are already underway to introduce the first model from the company’s new battery electric vehicle architecture, GM said Friday during an investor meeting.
GM said this new BEV architecture will be the foundation for an advanced family of “profitable EVs,” a word choice likely meant to express the automaker’s conviction to offer up true competition in the EV world, which has been dominated by Tesla on the luxury side and Nissan in terms of pure volume sales.
The flexible platform will provide a broad array of body styles and will be offered in front-wheel, rear wheel and all-wheel configurations, GM said. The brand’s most critical components, including the battery cells, are being designed for maximum usability across all programs, GM said. The battery system will also be adjustable, based on vehicle and customer requirements.
The announcement made Friday at an investor meeting marks a shift in GM’s approach to making electric vehicles. In the past, GM’s electrified vehicles — namely the all-electric Bolt and the plug-in hybrid Volt — fell under its mass market Chevrolet brand.
The Bolt appears destined to continue, at least for now. (The Bolt is also used by GM’s self-driving subsidiary GM Cruise as its testing vehicle.) Meanwhile, the Volt is slated to end. GM announced last year it would end production of the Volt and the plug-in Cadillac CT6, which had sluggish sales.
GM has been undergoing a transformation over the past four to five years, getting rid of expensive, money-losing programs like the Opel brand in Europe, and investing more into electrification and autonomous vehicle technology. It has also warned repeatedly, Friday’s investor meeting being no exception, to a coming downturn in the traditional automotive business.
In November, GM ramped up its belt-tightening measures with cuts to factory and white-collar workers, plant closures in North America and the elimination of several car models as it tries to transform into a nimble company focused on high-margin SUVs, crossovers and trucks and investments in future products like electric and autonomous vehicles.
The actions, which are meant to safeguard the automaker from an expected downturn in the U.S. market, will increase GM’s annual free cash flow by about $6 billion, including cost reductions of $4.5 billion and lower capital expenditure annual run rate of almost $1.5 billion by 2020. Ford took similar cost-cutting measures in 2018.
Even as GM announced those cuts, it said it would double engineering resources allocated to electric and autonomous vehicle programs by 2020.

NH Electric Co-op Is First in State to Offer Off-Peak EV Charging Rate
To help its members realize the benefits of Electric Vehicle (EV) ownership, New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC) has become the first electric utility in the state to offer deeply discounted rates to members who charge their EVs during off-peak hours.
EV ownership is on the rise and most auto manufacturers are currently offering or plan to offer multiple electric vehicle models. EV drivers can benefit from increased efficiency over fossil fuel powered vehicles, as well as lower maintenance costs. NHEC members purchasing or leasing EVs now can also choose an off-peak charging option to further reduce operating costs.
“The auto industry is changing rapidly and we see tremendous potential in the growth of EV ownership,” said Craig Snow, NHEC Vice President of Member Services. “At the same time, it’s important to manage this new source of electric load in ways that benefit Co-op members, the regional electric grid and the environment.”
The goal of NHEC’s off-peak charging program is to incentivize EV charging during times when regional electric demand is low, thus avoiding the need to build new generation facilities and further strain the New England electricity transmission grid to meet the added demand for power, Snow added.
As part of its new program, NHEC is also offering rebates of up to $300 to residential members who install Level 2 EV charging stations (240 volts) in its service territory. Rebates will help offset the cost of installing a second electric meter that records EV charging usage and enables members to take advantage of the lower off-peak charging rate. Rebates of up to $1,000 are also available for NHEC members who purchase or lease qualified EVs. Off-peak rates are effective for EV charging only. Household usage will still be separately metered and billed at NHEC’s basic residential rate.
Effective May 1st, 2018, the off-peak rate for EV charging will be 8.7 cents per kWh, which is 42% lower than the basic residential rate (effective May 1, 2018) of 14.9 cents per kWh. Off-peak hours are 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday – Friday, including all hours on weekends and holidays. The rate for on-peak charging will be 22.5 cents per kWh. Rates will be adjusted in May and November each year to reflect the seasonal change in the price of wholesale power.
For participating members who limit their EV charging to off-peak hours, the potential savings is significant. The owner of an EV like the Chevrolet Bolt who drives 16,000 miles a year can save about $20 a month by charging during off-peak times.
NHEC members who already have a Level 2 EV charger installed in NHEC service territory are also eligible for the rebate if they sign up for off-peak charging and install a dedicated meter.
Visit the EV page on the NHEC website at www.nhec.com/take-charge-save for program details and applications, or call NHEC Member Solutions at 1-800-698-2007. Funds are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
