GCF Tokyo
Will Forever be the Captain of this “Ship.” I wish every supporter of Jikook today could have been in the fandom 5 years ago. Could have had the pleasure of waking up on November 8th to this beautiful declaration of love! Jikook have given us so much since then But this for the moment takes the cake!
youtube
I joined the fandom in 2015 closer to 2016. I was barely in the fandom two weeks before being pretty convinced that Jikook were more than friends ( I can go into detail later about that).  I remember constantly being torn between certainty and uncertainty because while jikook were questionable pre 2017, they were still more subtle. However, 2017 was a crescendo, every month getting a tad bit louder...we all knew something was on the horizon and then September hit and JK had a breach in his security and his itinerary was leaked. This sent the fandom into overdrive. Half the fandom scrambling to rid the internet of this info, and the other half torn between letting their curiosity get the best of them and shutting down sesange gossip. However, regardless of where one stood, if you were active in the fandom at all during this time you heard the rumors, you saw the itinerary, you learned about the gossip--JK and JM were going to Tokyo in October for JM’s birthday and JK paid for it. I remember trying hard to not talk about it or think about it. It could very well be a lie and it wasn’t right how we came to learn about it! Bloggers overall did a good job of shutting down discussions on this topic so there was silence on it...until there wasn’t.
Jimin’s birthday comes and goes and no trip. This leaves many to forget the rumors all together. Then October 28th hits and the below pictures are shared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole fandom is going crazy! Jungkook and Jimin are in fact heading to Tokyo. They were spotted at Busan International Airport and seen off by their families. No one wants to say it but we are all thinking it...the rumors were true...and that was a legit sesange.
Every day they are gone we are being shown picture after picture of their time in Tokyo. And I remember thinking...Did JK really pay for all this...did he truly do this for JM’s birthday?!?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the trip was over...the fandom was still recovering from the news that JM and JK literally went on vacation together and it was an all expense paid trip...paid for by none other than JK.  Then JM drops another bomb.
Tumblr media
The fandom is sent back into overdrive...we could just see the pink aura around them! And it made all of us crazy because we couldn’t believe this was all happening and we were getting to experience it in real time.
And just as we were thinking we are in heaven...JM post his clips of their trip together. We are sent again into party celebration mode.
Tumblr media
When I tell you 2017 was the year, it was the year!!! It was day after day of being hit with something new. But just when we thought we were done the crescendo of the year reached it’s peek...JK drops GCF in Tokyo. And there was a short quiet.
There was a quiet stillness because while most of us believed Jikook were a couple, we had resolved ourselves to the fact that we could be wrong. GCF Tokyo changed all that.
I remember watching it over and over and over again thinking...OH MY! This is real...I’ve always felt it was real but this...this makes me know it’s real. It was a quiet but loud realization that reverberated across the fandom. Jungkook is in LOVE LOVE with Jimin. For a moment I thought this was their coming out video...because who could watch this and question Jikook at all! Was this it! Was this their way of telling the world who they love?
While many still found a way to discredit GCFT, I think it was in a way JK’s way of declaring his love to JM, declaring it to anyone that would listen. I believe most of Korea heard it and we heard it! November 8th was the day my certainty turned into assurance. It is one of the most beautiful films and every time I watch it I am in awe of JK’s boldness. My heart melts thinking of JM’s reaction to seeing it for the first time. How loved he must have felt! How surprised...he must have cried so much!
When they returned they kept surprising us. Every year since 2017 has been a little louder. I think GCFT showed them that they could get away with a lot. That they could be a glass closet...they could be loud and people still would feign ignorance or deny it. It gave them a degree of freedom to be themselves without fear of the repercussions. If people weren’t convinced by GCFT they will never be convinced!
I wanted to write about this because I hear many people scoff at any mention of GCFT and say things like...that was years ago! And that bothers me to my core because GCFT is tantamount to a love letter or a proposal. A proposal is a proposal no matter if it was 5 seconds ago or 5 years ago. It doesn’t matter if the couple is still together or not...the proposal happened proving at the very least that love was once there!
Saying that it was years ago is not a rebuttal, I’m not even sure what one is trying to suggest with that statement. Are you saying that because it’s old, it’s irrelevant? If that’s the case you are admitting that 5 years ago it was relevant, meaning you accept that they were dating 5 years ago? But most that make these claims wouldn’t agree to those terms. They throw out that’s old to diminish the impact of it...to pretend like old evidence isn’t evidence today of a relationship.
Saying “ that was years ago” is a senseless statement that holds no genuine meaning. GCF Tokyo will always be proof...even if they broke up it would still be proof that Jikook were in love in 2017! It will always be proof because it’s like a page from JK’s diary...it’s his heart on the screen! It’s his love letter to JM and that will never change. That is a fact and will always stand to be true...10, 20, 100 years from now...GCFT will still be JK’s love letter! No amount of time changes that.
Now we can all argue when their relationship started and we all have our theories but stamp in the timeline that is certain is November 8, 2017. They were definitely in a committed relationship at that time and since I see no change in their dynamics other than growing intimacy, domesticity, and comfort...it’s safe to assume that their timeline is still active and moving.

Flight 7500: a unknown force that kills
Tumblr media
Takashi Shimizu's Flight 7500 (also known as 7500) is a supernatural horror film that was released in 2014. The movie revolves around a group of passengers aboard Vista Pacific Airlines Flight 7500, which departs from Los Angeles and is bound for Tokyo. As the flight progresses, the passengers encounter a series of eerie and supernatural events that escalate into a terrifying ordeal.
Plot Overview
The film begins with the passengers settling in for their overnight journey across the Pacific Ocean. However, turbulence soon strikes, and when it subsides, a passenger mysteriously dies. This event triggers a series of supernatural occurrences, leading to chaos and fear among the remaining passengers. The confined space of the airplane heightens the tension, as the characters grapple with the unknown force that seems to be targeting them.
Cast and Characters
Flight 7500 features a notable cast, including:
Ryan Kwanten as Brad Martin
Amy Smart as Pia Martin
Leslie Bibb as Laura Baxter
Jamie Chung as Suzy Lee
Jerry Ferrara as Rick Lewis
Scout Taylor-Compton as Jacinta Bloch
Christian Serratos as Raquel Mendoza
These characters include vacationing couples, a thief, and a businessman with a mysterious box, all of whom must confront the supernatural threat together.
Production and Release
Directed by Takashi Shimizu, known for his work on The Grudge, the film was written by Craig Rosenberg. It was produced by Taka Ichise and Roy Lee, who have both been involved in various successful horror projects. Flight 7500 had a troubled release history, initially scheduled for 2012 but ultimately premiering in international markets in 2014 before its U.S. release on April 12, 2016.
Reception
The film has garnered mixed reviews, with some praising its unique premise of a haunted airplane, while others criticized its execution and originality. Despite its challenges, Flight 7500 adds to the small genre of horror films set in the confined space of an aircraft, exploring themes of isolation and fear in a high-stakes environment.
Flight 7500 stands out for its setting and the inherent tension of a supernatural thriller aboard a plane, making it a noteworthy entry in the horror genre.

Teraji-Budler, Nakatani-Cortes, and undercard bouts to stream live from Tokyo’s Ariake Arena in the early morning hours
Japan’s unified WBC/WBA light flyweight world champion Kenshiro Teraji will defend his titles against South African two-division world champion Hekkie Budler on Monday, September 18, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.   In the co-feature, undefeated Japanese southpaw Junto Nakatani makes the first defense of his WBO junior bantamweight world title against Mexican contender Argi Cortes.   Teraji-Budler, Nakatani-Cortes, and additional undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. in the early morning hours on ESPN+.   Teraji (21-1, 13 KOs) earned his first world title by defeating Ganigan Lopez for the WBC 108-pound strap in May 2018. He made eight defenses before losing the belt via 10th-round TKO against Masamichi Yabuki in September 2021. The 31-year-old avenged his lone defeat by stopping Yabuki in the third round of their March 2022 rematch to regain the title. Teraji then stopped Hiroto Kyoguchi last November in the seventh round to unify the WBC and WBA titles. He defended his unified championship with a ninth-round TKO against then-unbeaten contender Anthony Olascuaga in April.    Budler (35-4, 11 KOs) captured the WBA minimumweight world title with a first-round knockout win against Karluis Diaz in March 2014. He made four defenses before losing the belt to Byron Rojas in March 2016. Two years later, he decisioned Ryoichi Taguchi to capture the WBA and IBF light flyweight titles. He vacated his IBF strap and lost the WBA title in his first defense, a 10th-round TKO loss to Hiroto Kyguchi in December 2018. The 35-year-old veteran is 3-0 since losing his title, including a decision win over former WBO champ Elwin Soto.   Nakatani (25-0, 19 KOs) won the vacant WBO flyweight world title in November 2020 with an eighth-round knockout against Giemel Magramo. He defended it twice, defeating Angel Acosta in four rounds and knocking out Ryota Yamauchi in eight. He moved up to junior bantamweight and captured the WBO crown with a highlight-reel knockout against former WBA champ Andrew Moloney in May. Cortes (25-3-2, 10 KOs) is a nine-year pro who nearly upset Juan Francisco Estrada in a fiercely-contested September 2022 showdown. Cortes is coming off a 10-round majority decision win over Adolfo Castillo Gonzalez in March. In other streaming action from Tokyo:
Former multi-division kickboxing world champion Tenshin Nasukawa (1-0) will return in an eight-round Junior featherweight battle against undefeated Mexican Juan Flores Aceves (9-0, 7 KOs). Nasukawa made his pro boxing debut in April with a six-round decision win over Yuki Yonaha, while Aceves is coming off an eighth-round TKO against then-unbeaten  Adolfo Perez Lopez in June.
Anthony Olascuaga (5-1, 3 KOs), from Los Angeles, looks to bounce back from his defeat to Teraji in an eight-round light flyweight battle against Filipino former world title challenger Giemel Magramo (28-3, 23 KOs).

The Octo Expansion is the 'vacation' Agent 3 and Cap'n Cuttlefish are on, which is referenced within the base game's single-player campaign. The events of the Octo Expansion story mode takes place at the same time as the base game's story does. Octo Expansion DLC Main article: Octo Expansion This mode is set in Octo Canyon, a place similar to Octo Valley from the first game. The Squid Sisters Stories mention the snow globe DJ Octavio was imprisoned in is shattered and Cap'n Cuttlefish's shack is smashed. Callie and the Great Zapfish have disappeared and Marie recruits the player, designated Agent 4, to storm Octo Canyon to search for them. The events of the story mode take place two years after the completion of the first game's Octo Valley mode, while Cap'n Cuttlefish is on vacation with Agent 3. For the European version, the game was also localized to Dutch, German, Italian and Russian. Each version has its own translations of the game, even with slight differences between the North American/Oceanian and European versions' English, French, and Spanish translations. Previously, Oceania received the European version of the first Splatoon before receiving the North American version of this game.

Timeline of the main story
I actually made this blog to share stupid trivia i find while translating, so stupid trivia you’re getting.
Youkaigakkou is actually surprisingly clear with what happens when, although im not sure if thats the case with all school life manga, since i dont read school life manga that much lol
this is gonna get long real fast, so everything is under the cut
April
Generally the school year starts at the beginning of April, but it doesn’t actually get any more specific than “April”
In yoseito ch 22, its april 18 on hatanaka’s 2nd day of school, so school started on April 17 for him. It also says 200X, and this is 9 years before yoseito, so 10 years before main story, which means the year timeframe is 2010 to 2019.
Tumblr media
Chapter 4 (MIki’s lesson) happens at least a week after the start of school
Tumblr media
May
Chapter 6: we get a calendar at the end of the chapter!!
Tumblr media
pretty shite calendar. why aren’t the columns labelled. honestly not quite sure how to parse this.
i believe ch 7 (spooking lesson + haruaki goes home directly after) happens on may 1st
ch 8 and 9 (the gang goes to haruakis house) happens on may 2nd
the end of ch 9 is the next day and the train ticket says may 3rd
Tumblr media
ch 10 (run melos) is a week before midterms, so like, mid may? idk
ch 11 (senseis sunday), pretty sure it’s may 26. see the next point
Tumblr media
idk what this is called but ch 13 sure gives us this.
this would be 2013 or 2019, this kinda lines up bc this manga started in 2014
but also theres no world where this lines up with the calendar from above so whatever
ch 13 is sports day prep, which is may 31, friday
ch 14 to 16 is sports day itself, june 2, sunday
June
No specific dates for anything that happens in june (ch 16 to 19)
ch 19 (zashiki and co sneak into school at night) happens a week before end of term exams (early july), so like late june.
Tumblr media
July
Tumblr media
ch 20 (momoyama perfume) happens right before sano’s birthday! (july 7)
we dont actually get a chapter about sanos birthday. wtf
we get another timetable in ch21, but its the same one as the one above so im disregarding it. this is called reusing assets, a very smart move
Tumblr media
ch 21 and 22 (karasutengu troupe introduction) happen on the same day as ch20, just in the afternoon
ch 23 (amaaki impersonation) happens after july 7, thats all i know
Tumblr media
everything that happens in july is before the 20th, since thats when summer vacation starts.
a lot actually happens in that small timeframe
ch 26 (teacher trio go to kyoto + reminisce) happens some weekend
ch 28 to 30 (spookology camp) happens at some point, idk
ch 36 to 38 (lost in tokyo) happens a week before summer vacation starts
summer vacation should be july 20, but i cant be sure since it isnt mentioned in any chapter, but the timeframe is around there.
August
Tumblr media
ch44 and 45 (beniko haunted house) is august 10, and it says “middle of summer vacation” so the start would be around july 20, yeah...?
ch 46 (beach episode) and ch47 to 49 (miki house) happen on the same day, not sure what day exactly tho.
ch50 (august 31) happens on august 31. shocking!
we also get this calendar.
Tumblr media
which would be 2016, which.... wasnt even the year this chapter came out on. this chapter came out in like 2019
September
anyway, second term starts september 1, which we do get confirmation on in ch50.
ch51 (haru and sano get handcuffed together) happens 2 weeks into september
Tumblr media
my mans, can you be less casual about predicting the future like that
Tumblr media
ebisu came to hyakki at the very least around 2.5/3rd week of september, since the above is already 2 weeks into september, and in ch52 he says “starting next week”
the timeline’s surprisingly tight around this time, since
ch55 (part time job)
ch56 and 57 (culture festival discussion)
ch58 and 59 (youkai train)
all happen within a week or less, and they happen on different days
the culture festival (ch61 to 66) is two days, and happens around 22 to 23 september. the second day of the festival is the autumn equinox/ohigan, which is 23 or 22 september depending on the year
Tumblr media
the whole of the renren arc (ch 67 to 77) happens in one day
Tumblr media
this one day is actually really tight. in ch67 u can see a clock, i do believe this is around 1:40pm and not 8am
Tumblr media
and then another clock in ch70, which is 5:50pm. this is after haruaki was trying to come up w a plan for 2 hours and then actually executing his genius social media slander plan
Tumblr media
and then this
Tumblr media
and then the whole ordeal actually goes all night, and ends at sunrise
Tumblr media
October
Unclear when exactly the school trip happens, but its sometime in october.
Tumblr media
ch 83 until ch 90 (so far) has been the 2nd day of their 4D3N trip......
also, a fun bit of trivia:
Tumblr media
ebisu’s festival is 20th october, so even when all the other gods are gone for kannazuki, ebisu is still available for worship in october.
the fact that the mangaka managed to line up the exact right characters and situation for this to happen and this detail to be relevant is kinda impressive.
thats all the chapters for now, heres how the months measure up
april: ch 1 to 7 (7 chapters)
may: ch 8 to 13 (6 chapters)
june: ch 14 to 19 (6 chapters)
july: ch 20 to 43 (24 chapters!)
august: ch 44 to 50 (7 chapters)
september: ch 51 to 78 (28 chapters!)
october: ch 79 to 90 (12 chapters so far)

Hlo I hope u have seen jm saudi Arabia vlive right. There was clearly someone with jm throughout the vlive. And it was a male. First time we hear a door knocking jm went there , talked something, door closed n he continued vlive. Said it was manager , most probably its manager. Then we hear the door inside the room , someone came n jm having a smirk checks out the person with a cheeky smile n told it was manager. But I don't think so. Manager came n left earlier. Then we can hear someone opening somethings , maybe fridge behind. N viewrs asked jm who is in the room. He told no one n he is alone. After taking few min , shows us the room. Then he went to bedroom , continued vlive n towards end while he is saying ending comments on army celebrating his bday we see him looking at someone or something behind. We can hear voice of something in back. He looked there few seconds smiling n there comes n male voice saying 'oho'. N 101% it was not jm made that voice. He made some expression with his brows n lips like nothing happened. Continued the vlive n ended. Who was that person, I don't think manager came back and is roaming around his room n bedroom. And is making jimin to smirk at him.if it was manager then why jm told he is alone when asked. Was it JK, not sure but probably ys , considering how many times they have been in each other's room n didn't appeared on screen. I know u don't like analysis but this is short n we can hear the voice from behind. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hn-Zv0jByA&t=2s . I've also watched the original vlive and heared the same.
Ok anon, so here comes my take on Jimin's Saudi Arabia Vlive from 12 October 2019, and remember, you asked for it. Lol.
I just sat myself down and re-watched it, god it's long.
Do I think there is someone in the room? End answer is YES!
Do I think it's JK? I certainly think it is JK.
Unlike the 2016 lives, where I was weary to assume in both lives that it was JM or JM hidden in the rooms, here I am way more confident to say that the person is indeed JK. O
Things I noticed in this Vlive:
Jimin talking about the concert – the only member he talks about is JK -he’s the one he looked at seeing him have a good time (he demonstrates JK's moves several times) , making him relax and enjoy – JK's the one on his mind, the one he turns to look for.
JM shares what he did during their time off. He talks about his trip to Paris and this is the live where he tells the story of flying back to Seoul for JKs birthday only to fly out to Hawaii the next morning.
Someone comes in – there is a conversation, you can hear them say he needs to eat breakfast and more, JM giggling. The voice is unrecognizable.
JM comes back to camera says it was "our manager". This is important to me. He says "our manager" at this point, while later on, he refers to the person in the room as "my manager".
JM continues to talk about his vacation, talks about going to Russia and how his friend likes to take photos. Around 31:48 min. mark he says he told his friend: “I want to be your model” – and looks to his left with a smirk on his face, then turns back to the camera and giggles. Ahm, let’s think for a minute, where else did we hear this before? Who did we hear him ask if he was his model? Is that person actually in the room with JM?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
41 min. mark, slightly before that JM looks sideways again, and then a couple of seconds later you can see behind him there is a reflection on the kitchen counter top, and you can see movement, like a shadow passing by. I have watched this several times to make sure it's not JM's movements that cause that movement in the reflection. As far as I can see it's not a reflection of JM's movements. It's too fast and moving from one side to the other. It looks like someone moving across and behind the camera.
Maybe that’s why he brings the camera closer, and once in a while you can see his eyes moving ever so slightly to look to the right, or right and up slightly, smirking ever so lightly. He's gotten better at this since the Tokyo live debacle.
When singing promise and raising pinky, looks slightly to upper right (behind camera)?
At this point he moves the camera angle and we can't see reflection on the kitchen counter anymore , so if whoever was there moved from behind the camera back into the room we can't see it. I don't think he's aware of it or did it on purpose, maybe he moved the camera because that person was moving back into the room and he wanted to make sure they weren't seen on camera. Idk. But following comes this:
52.30 min. approx. is the moment EVERYBODY talks about.
There is a noise, like a thud, JM turns the camera to the right, so we can see even less of the room. He then turns to his left, first time only to look , second time actually checking out whoever it was top to bottom big grin on his face, turns back to camera giggling, but he couldn't help himself, and turns to look a third time, looking back at us, grin on face and saying: “it’s my manager” and repeats it several times. Yeah JM, your 'manager'. Right. Do you usually check out your manager like that? Sexual harassment law suit now in progress (not).
You know what? It probably was 'his manager'. Same 'manager' that Tae took his cup of noodles in the Tokyo Vlive.
JM goes on with the live, but you can still hear noises in the room once in a while.
At 1:04:54 JM is asked if there is someone in the room (I mean, with all the noises going on). He gets up walks away for a few seconds, we can hear him saying something, then noises, more talking, coughing, and then comes back saying there’s really nothing to see in the room, and takes the camera to show the room…
He walks from the lounge area to the bed room, not really turning the camera around to see beyond the clear path from room to room. Real Tokyo live going on here.
JM tells us he will end the live soon, eat something and go workout with JK (this is him repeating saying he was supposed to go work out with JK earlier in the live).
Around 1:14:00 JM starts to talk about the how they surprised him for his birthday during the concert and how much it meant to him and thanks for it, looking at the camera but also seems like he's looking beyond the camera.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
JM says his thanks, smiles, looking slightly to his right, and then you hear "a-ha". It's does not look or sound like JM saying it.
Tumblr media
Last few minutes JM sits on bed and keeps looking to his left, towards the bedroom door, it feels like someone is standing there, perhaps signalling him “enough”. He also smiles at some point while looking there.
Before ending the live, he gets up off bed, closes bedroom door (maybe so whoever is out there will not show up on camera), walking around the room and finally ending the live.
Was someone in the suite with JM during the live? The way I see it, for at least part of the live there was someone there off camera. The noises, the reflection, JM changing the camera angle a second before 'his manager' made noise and he checked him out. JM's behaviour before getting up with the camera to 'show the room'.
Was it JK? I personally think it was. Beyond this being 2019 and clearly those two are together (if in 2016 some may have had doubts), the way JM was checking out his 'manager' (usage of this reference brought me back to the Tokyo live and him using it there too); him changing from "our manager" with the first interruption (probably the actual manager) to "my manager" whom he checked out from top to bottom; him talking about the Russia trip and asking to be his friend's model, turning to look sideways (at someone) and laughing (let's think for one moment, who did he ask in the past to be his model????); it felt like JM was thanking whoever it was there with him for the birthday surprise. If you watch the Bangtan bomb you will see that even there JM talks about how excited he was, but yet again mentions how happy JK was and how it made him even happier...
The one thing I am still on the fence about is the "a-ha". It's definitely there. Who says it???? I've seen this several times, I really don't think it's JM making that sound, but I am not 100% sure with this, so I'll leave this one up to you.

Rising Sun of J-Dramas in Asia
Came across an article titled “New Dawn For Japanese Dramas” as J-Dramas see an upswing in popularity in recent years across Asia.
Tumblr media
[The Journalist, Alice in Borderland, Rurouni Kenshin]
Why the sudden interest in J-dramas?
More of the content is now available on streaming platforms such as Netflix.
A 28 year old analyst at a pharmaceutical company says she used to watch J-dramas like Boys Over Flowers (2005) and Hana-Kimi (2007) frequently, but after a while, it became very difficult to find sources online to watch them.
Until recently, when J-dramas arrived on Netflix, it re-ignited her interest in watching new J-dramas like Alice in Borderland (2020), Kotaro Lives Alone (2021), Cursed in Love (2020) and My Love Mix Up (2021).
The recent arrival of Japanese series, both old and new, on global streaming platforms has boosted their popularity. But it is not just a nostalgia fest for long time fans as the titles are also attracting new viewers.
Tumblr media
[List of Japanese shows on Netflix Asia]
A 22 year old university student began watching J-dramas recently on Netflix such as Nobuta Wo Produce (2005), Midnight Diner (2016) and Kantaro The Sweet Tooth Salaryman (2017).
She enjoys the slower pace of such J-dramas as it’s something she can watch and feel relaxed, after a long day of work and not every episode ends on a cliffhanger, making the watching experience a pleasant one.
People also find that the subject matter of love, relationship, work, life, of young urbanites living alone in the city is relatable and filmed in fashionable locations like Tokyo and scenic places in the countryside seems appealing.
J-dramas vs K-dramas
Tumblr media
[Rurouni Kenshin and The Kingdom]
As police crackdowns on piracy stepped up over the years in Asia, the prominence of J-dramas diminished towards the end of 2000s. J-dramas have been notoriously difficult to find online, with few legal sources available.
Unlike Korean dramas which are available on every major streamer. So why is South Korea investing heavily in the country’s entertainment products with the intent to export them globally, but not Japan?
Japan has not always been the underdog. In the 90s and 2000s, series such as Long Vacation (1996), GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (1998), Terms of a Witch (1999) and Beautiful Life (2000) were popular across Asia.
Not to mention shows targeted at children and teenagers such as Sailor Moon, Super Sentai, Ultra Series, Kamen Rider and Godzilla. So it is of no surprise that many adults of today have nostalgic memories of Japanese shows.
Tumblr media
[Rich Man Poor Woman : Japanese and Korean]
A few J-dramas inspired the creation of Korean versions such as Rich Man Poor Woman, Little Forest, Midnight Diner, and Squid Game (Battle Royale). While the Korean versions were marketed abroad overseas, the original Japanese versions were marketed locally in Japan.
So because of Japan’s uninterested in marketing its films abroad, Japanese entertainment became overshadowed by the South Korean wave, or hallyu, in Asia. But now, Japan seems to be ready to embrace the world just as it is preparing to re-open its borders.
Early this month, March 2022, Disney+ announced a strategic collaboration agreement with Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV to share and co-produce dramas, anime and variety programmes.
This is the first time a Nippon TV drama series will be streamed worldwide. Netflix had also inked a licensing deal with Nippon TV, to stream 20 of its titles across Asia, including the upcoming, The Makanai : Cooking For The Maiko House.
While J-dramas have to compete for attention with other dramas from Asia, such as Taiwan, China and especially, Korea, they have their selling points.
A 37 year old HR executive who had been a fan of Japanese entertainment for more than two decades says there is plenty to like about them.
She says, J-dramas in general are only about 9 to 11 episodes long, as they do not waste time with unnecessary fillers and get straight to the main plot.
They’re also a lot of relatable slice of life moments, understated humour and wonderful music. The ones that stick with you have such iconic and distinctive soundtracks that you’ll remember long after watching them.
My Personal Thoughts
Tumblr media
[Yae No Sakura and Mr Sunshine, each depicting the country’s history in moving towards a modern era, discarding its corrupted Tokugawa Shogunate and Joseon Dynasty]
I’ve watched both K-dramas (e.g. Descendants of the Sun, Empress Ki, Mr Sunshine, etc) and J-dramas and I think they are both great in different ways. But to sum it up in just a few words...
K-dramas are more like western shows with all its high drama and action sequences and they have ways to arouse your curiosity every episode, leaving you wanting more, as the suspense is killing you that you want to know what’s next.
J-dramas are slower paced slice of life drama which does not leave you at the edge of your seat but makes you feel calm and relaxed watching it, and realising the character’s life struggles are more relatable to your own.
So for someone who has too much excitement, drama and heartbreaking experiences in my daily life in the real world, I’d like something “peaceful” to watch after a long day or week of work and to take a break from life to escape.
When I was younger, I used to watch a lot of K-dramas as I love shows with lots of “action” and “drama” watching characters that makes my blood boil but as I grow older and weathered, I started to shift gears towards J-dramas.
Personally, seeing many J-dramas appearing on Netflix was a surprise but a welcoming one (see what I did there? XD). However, I feel that the quality of shows available on Netflix are not as great as compared to what’s out there.
Most of the J-dramas on Netflix are geared towards western audiences such as Rurouni Kenshin, Alice in Borderland, The Journalist, A Family, where it’s all action thriller, the type of action films you can find in Hollywood.
Although there are slice of life dramas like Our Sister’s Soulmate, Hotaru no Hikari, I’m Taking the Day Off, I feel that there are more shows that are not shown on Netflix, which I find disappointing.
For example, when you see Korean shows, you’ll see all sorts of genres, including historical ones, something you do not see on Netflix as you do not see Taiga Dramas like Yae No Sakura and 13 Lords of the Shogun.
Slice of Life dramas and historical dramas to me are the best depiction of a country’s culture, tradition and history as compared to modern action genres, like gangsters and zombies.
Tumblr media
[I’m Taking the Day Off, about a salary-woman who struggles to find a lover.]
For example in slice of life, you get to see what it’s like living in Japan. What it’s like being a salaryman or salary-woman, struggling with life, relationships and work, while living alone and learning how to cook and stuff.
In historical dramas, you get to see what it’s like in Japan before WWII and all the historical events leading up to that moment to be able to see the bigger picture of what shaped the country into what it is today.
Just like how K-drama historical fans understands the history of Joseon Dynasty, J-drama historical fans understands the history of Tokugawa Shogunate. And both Dynasty and Shogunate has its own dark history.
Having said that, I do hope that one day, everyone will get to see these hidden gems, waiting to be discovered.

[a comment by user Milinda Wilson on Youtube]
The outfit you see Taemin wearing for this performance is his look and style he had for his "Want" comeback promotions. So during this time period, whenever he performed "Want" he wore an outfit that was styled similarly and he always had one glove. When Idols promote their new song or album they always have a style that represents that song and/or album and they usually keep that style throughout the whole promotions, so what he is wearing is what you will see him wearing in any performance of "Want" around this same time. You can often tell what time period a video is from by what their outfits and style looks like, because it represents a specific promotional period.
And Kpop concert videos are never just a tapping, they are videos of live concert, award show performance or special event performance, etc. It's all live.
If you think 1,000 people in the audience felt like a lot, just imagine performing on a regular basis to 55,000 fans who are there to see just you. For example, SHINee regularly holds concerts at the Tokyo Dome in Japan and that concert venue holds 55,000 people. And in order to be allowed to perform at the Tokyo Dome it's pretty much an unwritten rule that you have to be able to fill the place to capacity and sell out.
Taemin actually doesn't really have any formal training in any style of dance. Before joining SM, he had never taken a single dance class nor learned to dance from any kind of teacher. He started out by teaching himself dance moves by watching dancers on TV and he was chosen to be an SM trainee with only his natural talent. As a trainee, SM had him focusing on hip-hop and popping and locking because they thought they wanted SHINee to be a hip-hop group. And he didn't even do any type of contemporary dance training until his Japanese solo debut in 2016 with his song "Sayonara Hitori"/"Goodbye" which was introduced and taught to him by the choreographer, who also happens to be the same choreographer who choreographed "Move" and "Want." That's just how talented he is. Dance just comes naturally to him. But that's not to say, he hasn't also put in a ton of hard work to get to this level.
There really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself.  Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out with only self-taught skills, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, he  has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep 43, July 2016 - Inadequate election coverage by media, Increase in motiveless crime.
Kaoru starts this episode by saying how its still really hot. Joe mentions that its only going to get hotter over the next few weeks, and asks Kaoru if he hates Summer. Kaoru says he hates Summer and Winter. He prefers Spring and Autumn, and will absolutely not be attending any summer fireworks displays or other such summer events. Everyone has summer vacation time, so not matter where you go, its hot, and there are people everywhere. He hates this.
Kaoru then moves on to talk about the new single Utafumi, in particular the special site that has been set up for it. Upon entering the site, the phrase 3分10秒間の痛み (3mins10secs of pain) appears on screen. This short phrase gives off a kind of instant power, but Kaoru wonders what Joe actually thinks of the song. Firstly, says Joe, the song contains an effortless feel, and does have an instantaneous power to it. For some inexplicable reason, he also feels like the song is enjoyable to listen to. Joe also picks up on something that he said during his Rolling Stone interview with Kaoru the previous week, which is that Dir en grey is very multifaceted when it comes to expression. Just as there a many different angles from which to view a Picaso painting, Joe views Dir's music in the same way. He fell in love with its multi-dimensional sound after seeing the last tour and listening to Utafumi, and wants to delve deeper into it. Kaoru expresses his thanks at such words, and explains that Utafumi is a kind of step in the direction towards the new album. He asks everyone to look forward to that.
Next they welcome Tasai for the Tokyo Sports corner. The first thing Tasai does is apologise for Hiranabe bringing a young woman with him on the last show. To Tasai, its unthinkable to bring a girlfriend to work. Kaoru says he was honestly pretty shocked.
Tasai's first topic relates to the House of Councillors elections, and how all TV stations run election specials on the night after the election has finished. The tv personality Dave Spector has questioned why Japan never shows such election specials on TV before an election. Surely it would be better to get all the info out there to the voters before the election takes place? Joe elaborates on this problem by bringing up the movie 'Pacchigi!/Break through!', by director Izutsu Kazuyuki. Joe had talked with the producer of the movie, who is a Korean resident of Japan. The movie deals with the conflict between a Korean school in Japan and the local Japanese teens. The producer told Joe that advertising the movie was very tough. He had paid a lot of money to a certain tv station for a CM spot, and wanted to use a clip from the one of thr climaxes of the movie where the Korean female lead character (played by Sawajiri Erika) says to the Japanese boy who likes her, 'If you and I were to be together always, can you become Korean?'. Despite being approved by the ethics committee, the tv channel wouldn't accept it. When the movie was promoted on the radio, the director and producer pushed really hard to be able to play the Korean song 'Imjin River', which appears in the movie, but at the last minute, the radio station refused to play it. This illustrates that the media are the most conservative ones out there. Japan needs its media to change first before other change can happen. Tasai adds that there is no law forbidding detailed coverage before an election in Japan, this is entirely self imposed control. Although the likes of Ikegami Akira play an important role in bringing political issues to the forefront, there is still a large build up of frustration surrounding elections in Japan. Kaoru states that if the media did cover elections thoroughly before voting took place, they would be much easier to understand. Joe agrees, saying that if people developed an interest in the small details of the situation, it might be a catalyst for them to check out the actions of political parties in more depth. Kaoru replies that a lot more fishy businesses would come up to the surface if that was the case.
Tasai admits that there are other ways to get information, for example on the internet, but TV is still currently the big one. The only rule is that they are not allowed to tell viewers directly to vote for or not vote for a specific candidate. But there is nothing stopping them from presenting all the information there is, and telling viewers to make thier own decision before an election. Joe wonders which media outlet will ever be the first one to take this step. It will be a very important move if it happens. Tasai thinks it is currently still quite difficult for a tv station to be able to do this. He  also thinks that another important point in relation to the recent election is that young people didn't vote. Kaoru agrees, and says changes in the media would make everything easier to understand for them. Tasai says that in one previous House of Councillors election, the number of voters over age 60 was 12 million, wheras the number of voters in thier 20s in the same election was only 4million. The politicians are therefore always talking about the interests of the elderly..pensions etc, which people in thier 20s don't connect with. Tasai makes a plea for any listerners of this show who are in thier 20s to please go out and vote at election time. Kaoru echoes this sentiment. Joe say politics needs to be more future facing, and brings up the case of a country who did an experiment giving voting rights to 0 year old babies. Thier parents would vote for them in a way which they thought best represented thier future interests.
Kaoru coments that an online voting system is also needed to meet the reality of this younger generation. Tasai thinks that online voting will become a possibility in the near future. Joe comments that given the advanced state of technology in this day and age, an online voting system should not be that hard to organize. At the same time, Kaoru says he does enjoy going to vote in person at the local elementary school (*voting stations are often set up at elementary schools in Japan*), because he would never have any other opportunity to go into such a building, and he finds it quite nostalgic.
Tasai's next story is about a strange incident where a ballet teacher had her thumb cut off by a man. The man knew she would be alone at the ballet studio in the morning. He entered, strangled her till she passed out, and then cut off her thumb with a chisel. He must have had some kind of reason to do this, but no-one knows why. He apparently admitted he had wanted to cut off the little finger, but the ring finger got in the way, so he cut the thumb instead. Tasai doesn't understand why anyone would do this. No-one in the man's neighborhood knows anything about him, which makes him all the more odd. Kaoru comments that even though Japan is known for being a safe country, this kind of thing still happens. Joe asks Tasai if he has seen an increase in this kind of random crime in recent years as a reporter. Tasai says he definitely has. Crimes like murders etc used to be more clear cut in thier motives, such as wanting insurance money etc, but these days there seems to be a lot more thoughtless, maningless crime going on. Joe adds that a lot of these crimes have no apparent motive or end goal. Cases are also on the rise where crimes are commited against unrelated people. Tasai says this must have something to do with the environment people grow up in these days, but what exactly it is, he can't tell. This is unlike Hiranabe, who definitely had a motive for bringing that girl to the studio last week. *wink wink*.
To finish, Kaoru plugs the new jingle campaign, and says he might play some more entries on next week's show. Lastly, he wonders how Dobashi is doing in Rio and makes the realisation that if Dobashi never returns, Hiranabe will have to appear more often instead.

HBO Max New Releases: August 2021
https://ift.tt/3A1bKHN
Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

How The Suicide Squad is Different from Guardians of the Galaxy
By Mike Cecchini
It’s a good month for movies overall on HBO Max. Many intriguing library titles arrive on Aug. 1, including Collateral, The Fugitive (1993), The Shawshank Redemption, and Spawn. The Jurassic Park trilogy (Aug. 14), and Godzilla v. Kong (Aug. 17) make their return to the Warner streaming service a little later on.
HBO Max’s original TV offerings can’t compete with The Suicide Squad in August 2021, but there is still plenty to enjoy. The third season of erstwhile DC Universe series Titans premieres on Aug. 12. That will be followed by the second season of former Comedy Central delight The Other Two.
