the linda fairbairn timeline!
went rooting through some of my old papers from the past year and found my timeline from when I went through and devised a backstory for Linda Fairbairn, so i thought I'd put it up here just so those interested could have a look into how i think Linda's story went before Newcastle (and what she might have done afterward.)
mild spoilers for Zurich, some assumptions extrapolated from the timeline, and lastly, some conjectures from lucy @sircarolyn.
1978: Born to then-First Officer and Mrs. Fairbairn in Glasgow, their only child.
1982: First Officer Fairbairn takes 4-year-old Linda to see the last few stages of the Lombard RAC Rally, which has its finish line in York. Linda will cite this as the inception of her passion for rallying. (I also happened to draw this moment.)
1986: Group B era of rallying ends; Linda is 8. She loses interest in rallying at this point, much to the relief of her mother. (However, she does gain an interest in aviation. Much to the dismay of her mother.)
1994-ish: Linda takes her first flight at 16 in a little Cessna her father borrowed from the local aviation club.
1996: Linda begins pilot training at 18.
1999: The earliest at which Linda could conceivably have obtained her (frozen) ATPL, at the age of 21—in Newcastle, which happens in 2011, Linda says she's been a pilot "12 years."
Also in 1999: Linda and her father attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where she witnesses Michèle Mouton attempt the hillclimb in an Audi quattro, which inspires her to take up rallying (depicted here.)
1999 - 2003: Gap period, in which Linda obtains hours through various small jobs in light aircraft to prepare for application to an airline. In this period, she also starts navigating in amateur rallies before moving to driving.
2000 or thereabouts: Douglas gets sacked from Air England.
2003 - 2004: Linda and Herc join Caledonian. Linda is about 25 years old at this point, and has accumulated about 500 hours in the air. They start working together around this time, and Herc takes a liking to her, even teaching her how to work the assignment system so they can fly together often.
2006: Linda reaches 1500 hours, and her fATPL unfreezes, which enables her to apply as a captain at this point (she doesn't; Herc, who was accepted as a junior captain, gets a captain upgrade at some point)
Between 2006 and 2011: Linda is promoted to Senior First Officer, and Herc gets another captain upgrade. Probably not accurate but who cares.
2011: The events of Newcastle. Linda is 33 years old. (Sidenote: I think Martin is 32 [he says in Helsinki.] EDIT: martin’s 34 🙈 i computed wrong and didn’t look ahead. thanks for the tip anon!)
2013: The events of Zürich. Caledonian is absorbed into Swiss Air, and Linda moves to Switzerland. She is 35 years old, and at this point a captain, a rank that she keeps in the transfer. (I have a WIP about how this happens.)
2014 - 2015: Linda starts flying long-haul (36/37 years old).
Early 2015: The events of the Therlinda fic. The Rome chapter has to take place in mid-March, because the weather needs to be right. This also means Bobsled would have broken up in 2014. Sorry.
Some plane-related notes (take with a grain of salt):
At Caledonian, Linda and Herc fly the A320 (exit limit 195/190, range ≈ 6100 km) or A319 (exit limit 160, range ≈ 6900 km).
Linda and Herc both hold A320 type ratings. I want to say Air England had an Airbus short-range fleet and a Boeing long-range fleet, so Herc probably held a Boeing type rating at some point. I haven't thought about whether Douglas and Herc actually flew the B747, but it's a nice thought. Hold the thought about Herc flying Boeing for like. four sentences
I envision Swiss Air to have a mostly, if not all Boeing fleet. Linda has to acquire a B737 type rating for the move to Switzerland, and then, since my favorite thing is expanding Swiss Air's long-range fleet, a B777 or B787 rating. Switching from Airbus to Boeing isn't easy. The two manufacturers have vastly different design philosophies; pilots find it challenging to jump. Herc having Boeing experience in the past certainly gets my brain worms wiggling.
Anyway.
#cabin pressure#mine#linda fairbairn#em bookmarks#maybe i could have put this on a work on ao3 but i didn't really think it was that worth it#this is way too derived lmfalkdjfjk#maybe i will though. just for posterity.

Mini confirms new John Cooper Works GP will arrive in 2020
A post on Mini’s official Twitter feed has confirmed a 2020 launch date for the new John Cooper Works GP.
No further details or images have been revealed, but a concept shown at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed hinted at the design of the production model.
Calling all adrenaline lovers and MINI-enthusiasts: we are working on a new MINI #JohnCooperWorks GP, launching in 2020. Watch this space. #MINILove pic.twitter.com/VG9OmE3Ixn
— MINI (@MINI) November 16, 2018
Both the original and second-generation modern Minis offered a JCW GP model near the end of the mainstream models’ lifecycle, in 2006 and 2012 respectively. The new JCW GP will arrive shortly before the predicted launch of the new Mini hatchback.
BMW board member Peter Schwarzenbauer said: “we are working on a new Mini John Cooper Works GP, which will be launched in 2020,” but gave no details as to whether it will bear a resemblance to the concept.
The BMW-owned British brand said the concept is inspired by its triumphs at the Monte Carlo Rally in the 1960s, “embodying dynamic flair and the ultimate in driving fun”.
Schwarzenbauer has told Autocar previously that a JCW GP model was likely to appear again. “The John Cooper Works GP is an important part of the Mini brand,” he said. “It has worked well for us in the past.”
The 2018 concept featured extreme styling that is unlikely to be carried over in its entirety to a production model. There are large front and rear aprons, side skirts and a prominent roof spoiler. It also uses lightweight materials including carbonfibre, which Mini said optimises the power-to-weight ratio. No performance figures were provided, however.

Autostadt präsentiert I.D. R Pikes Peak zusammen mit zahlreichen Rennsportlegenden
Video: Die Entstehungsgeschichte des I.D. R Pikes Peak – von der Idee bis zur Rekordfahrt
Wolfsburg (01. August 2018). Der 500 kW (680 PS) starke I.D.
R Pikes Peak in Colorado lagen gerade einmal 250 Tage. Sehen Sie die Entwicklung des Rekordfahrzeugs im Video.

The 10 most expensive cars ever sold at auction
Here’s a round-up of the 10 most expensive cars ever to go under the hammer.
1. 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Atlantic – $43.7 million (2010)
Head and shoulders above all of the cars in the list. It is so rare that only three examples plus their prototype were ever built. This buyer was anonymous but Ralph Lauren is one of the other two very lucky owners.
2. 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO – $19.4 million (2010)
Bought by British radio and TV personality Chris Evans in 2010, the GTO is the most prized vehicle in Ferrari collecting circles. Only 36 were made and only 2 examples have found their way to auction in the last 18 years.
3. 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa – $16.39 million (2011)
Meaning Red Head, because its valve covers are thus colored, the Testa Rossa has real racing pedigree — winning Le Mans three times between 1958 and 1961.
4. 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe – $14.9 million (1987)
Sold at auction to an anonymous Japanese bidder in 1987, if the list was adjusted for inflation, it would be second. It is rumored to be about to come back on to the market and this time it might make the top spot.
5. 1936 Mercedes 540K – $11.7 million (2012)
In 2007, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone set the record when his sold for $6.3 million. The record was broken at Pebble Beach this year when one of the other 26 examples went under the hammer for almost twice as much.
6. 1968 Ford GT40 – $11 million (2012)
The most expensive American car ever sold at auction, the GT40 is from Ford’s racing heyday when it beat Ferrari at Le Mans. This one is even more special as it belonged to Steve McQueen.
7. 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB – $9.5 million (2008)
Also known as the California, this Ferrari once belonged to James Coburn. Like the 250 GTO at number two, it was bought by Chris Evans in 2008, who subsequently sold it in order to finance the acquisition of the GTO.
8. 1931 Bugatti Royale Berline – $8.9 million (1986)
This car was actually owned by the Bugatti family before finding its way over to America in the 1950s. Originally built for European royalty the car was a complete disaster when launched, coming on to the market at the height of the great depression.
9. 1929 ‘Birkin’ Bentley 4 ½ litre – $7.9 million (2012)
The most expensive British car ever to sell at auction, it went under the hammer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year breaking the record previously set by a 1904 Rolls Royce 10HP in 2006.
10. 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM – $7.7 million (2009)
A serious racing car even by today’s standards, it reached a record price after some serious restoration work. It had been involved in a serious crash in 1963, a year after winning Le Mans.

What to Expect at 2017 Monterey Car Week
Summer is close to ending, which means it’s time for fancy cars in a fancy place. The 2017 Monterey Car Week is just around the corner, with a handful of events, auctions, and races for automotive enthusiasts of all types to enjoy. AutoGuide.com will be covering all the automotive debuts live from 2017 Monterey Car Week, making a stop at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 18 and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 20. But there is a lot more to see and enjoy throughout the week if you’re in Monterey. There aren’t a lot of new car or concept car debuts planned, but there are a few North American debuts of cars we’ve seen before at auto shows abroad. 2017 Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Coverage Here are some interesting things to expect from this year’s event. Auctions There will be hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cars being auctioned off at 2017 Monterey Car Week. We could probably fill up a book with notable cars crossing the auction block including several classic Ferraris and the first McLaren F1 to ever become street legal in the U.S. There’s also the rare 2006 Lamborghini Concept S (seen above) and a pair of classic Mercedes 300 SLs. Bentley Bentley won’t have anything new to show off, but the EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept will be making its North American debut after bowing earlier this year at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The British automaker will also show off its new Continental Supersports, the Continental GT V8 S, Flying Spur W12 S, Mulsanne Speed, and Bentayga W12. Joining the EXP 12 Speed 6e Concept in making their North American debuts are three Bentayga variants: the Mulliner, Black, and Activity editions. BMW BMW has already teased a new roadster concept for 2017 Monterey Car Week, which will likely preview the upcoming new Z4 that shares its platform with the Toyota Supra successor. The German automaker will also show off its Concept 8 Series Coupe at both The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The concept, which previews the upcoming 8 Series, debuted in May at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and will be making its North American debut at 2017 Monterey Car Week. Ford Ford just introduced a special GT ’67 Heritage Edition that will be on display at Pebble Beach. Featuring a Race Red exterior, the Heritage Edition will be available in limited quantities for the 2018 model year and pays tribute to the Le Mans-winning, Ferrari-beating GT40 Mark IV race car from 1967. Infiniti Infiniti is arguably already stealing the show from other automakers by introducing its Prototype 9 ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The open-wheeled, electric retro roadster prototype is already getting plenty of buzz online and we can’t wait to check it out in person. The Japanese automaker will also have a custom-built Prince R380 on display, which is believed to be the only surviving R380 in existence. According to Infiniti, Prince Motor Company is considered to be Japan’s original builder of premium automobiles, and its legacy can be traced to Infiniti Motor Company and its current model line. Jaguar The stunning Jaguar XE SV Project 8 will make its North American debut at Monterey Car Week, bringing its 592 horsepower and aggressive styling to Northern California. The sedan was first unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June as a two-seater (seen above) and it will be joined by a four-seater U.S.-spec Velocity Blue version. Best of all, Jaguar will be putting them on the track at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Ken Okuyama Kode 0-Zero If you don’t recognize the name Ken Okuyama, you might want to keep that to yourself. That’s because Okuyama has contributed to the design of some of the world’s most famous cars, including the Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari P4/5, and the 996-generation Porsche 911. Now, the Japanese designer is unveiling his own vehicle called the Kode 0-Zero at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 18. It’s a one-off V12-powered supercar and you can bet we’ll be there to check it out. Mercedes-Maybach Mercedes-Maybach has been teasing something special for the summer, and it’s likely debuting at 2017 Monterey Car Week. The new concept car is believed to be a convertible version of the Vision 6 Concept that bowed at last year’s event, suggesting both the coupe and convertible are heading to production. We’ll know more later this week, but for now, there’s a video you can watch, previewing the concept. The post What to Expect at 2017 Monterey Car Week appeared first on AutoGuide.com News.

New Post has been published on http://topauto.site/new-sports-car-tvr-grif/
New sports car TVR Griffith: why didn't sicretlandу oligarch?
Revived British company TVR at the annual Goodwood Revival festival presented to the public its new car and finally declassified his name. In honor of the past models of the coupe will be called the TVR Griffith.
The current owner of TVR — Brit Les Edgar, who made his fortune in computer games. He bought her in 2013, our compatriot Nikolay Smolensky. The Russian “mini-oligarch”, as he calls it British press, too, dreamed of a successful new models, but apparently the car business was difficult to be expected: when Smolensky company TVR stopped production of cars in 2006.
The development of a new car took about three years. Les Edgar went to creative and thoroughly: the car was supposed to be a modern, lightweight and relatively affordable. Therefore, the selected aspirated Ford V8 Coyote 5.0 Ti-VCT from the Mustang, especially for TVR modified firm Cosworth. Big Bang engine with the dry sump fitted on top of the new flywheel and clutch. And the chassis went the innovative design iStream Carbon company Gordon Murray Design: space frame made of carbon fiber, steel and aluminum with torsional rigidity of nearly 20000 Nm/degree.
Size TVR Griffith close to Porsche Cayman models: the British car is a bit shorter (4314 mm 4379 mm), 49 mm wider (1850 mm) and above 34 mm (1239 mm). Final impact engine firm TVR is not yet leading, but according to specific power: approximately 400 horsepower per ton. That is, when the mass of Griffith 1250 kg motor should produce approximately 500 HP the engine is located behind the front axle, immediately followed by a six — speed “mechanics” Tremec Magnum XL. Rear drive, weight distribution is ideal (50:50), and the bottom to achieve the ground effect at high speed is made flat and smooth: for this, the exhaust pipes are placed behind the front wheels. Suspension — double wishbones “circle”, and the power steering in the spirit of the time electric.
Interestingly, the company almost completely abandoned the electronic assistants: the coupe is only required for admission to public roads ABS and ESP. From other systems — programmable launch-control and adjustable stiffness dampers. Dynamic characteristics continue to approximate a top speed of over 320 km/h, acceleration to “hundreds” — less than four seconds.
The exact numbers yet because the car is not yet mass-produced and not passed the certification: according to the most optimistic forecasts, the start of production at new factory in the Welsh Ebba Vale will start at the end of 2018. But nearly all 500 copies of the startup batch LE (Launch Edition) by carbon fiber bodywork has been ordered. It is expected that their main volume will be released in 2019. At the same time the annual production capacity should reach thousands of machines, and routine release 2000-2200 vehicles per year (to meet the liberal requirements of European small-scale certificate) firm plans to enter within five years — including using the second model (open version Griffith) and lightweight versions with stronger uprated motors. In addition, the company TVR is planning a return to Motorsport, so for the Goodwood festival road company car was a racing version.
And, it seems, the goal is to make the machine available will be executed. Even starting a special series coupe will cost customers less than 90 thousand pounds (about 117 thousand dollars). For example, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS with an engine capacity of 450 HP and a manual transmission is in the UK not less than 96 thousand pounds, while its maximum speed is 312 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 4,1 s, although the version with “robot” accelerates in 3.7 seconds. besides, how can a “mass” Porsche bet the image with the classic and brutal brand TVR?

Historic Minardi Day: one day I’ll be Goodwood (Auto Motor und Sport China, 06/2017)
We are in Italy, the country of cars, motorcycles and motorsport but, wuthout any reason, we didn’t have any kind of event to celebrate our excellences; until now.
Last 6th and 7th May, the second edition of the Historic Minardi day took place at Imola Circuit, which used to be one of the legendary apointments of Formula 1 championship up to 2006.
Aimed by the wish and the passion of Giancarlo Minardi, owner of Minardi Formula 1 team for more than 20 years (now Toro Rosso F1 team), this event was born last year as a meeting of old friends tighten by the relationship with Minardi and Formula 1; after the huge success of 2016, Mr Minardi decided to replicate.
This year’s Historic Minardi Day showed itself stronger than the weather. Not even the rain managed to dampen the enthusiasm of the five thousand passionate fans that went to Imola’s Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit to celebrate the story of a man and a team that wrote pages of motorsport history, a history of passion, tenacity and challenging difficulties.
The quality and numbers of cars were incredible: more than twenty five Formula 1 racing cars which included not only historic Minardi cars but also Ferrari, Williams, Dallara, Fondmetal and about thirty F2, F3 and GT cars took turns at racing around the track that was the stage for more than forty years of racing history. The paddock and the pits were invaded by passionate fans from all around Italy together with Team founder Gian Carlo Minardi and racing drivers who wrote important pages of motorsport history such as Pierluigi Martini, Luca Badoer, Gaston Mazzacane, Roberto Moreno, Alessandro Nannini, Emanuele Pirro, Andrea Montermini, Gabriele Tarquini, Nicola Larini and Riccardo Patrese.
At 11.30am of Sunday then, an unusual premiere: Giancarlo Minardi from Faenza made his debut at the wheel of a Minardi F1 owned by Dutch collector Fritz Van Eerd: “I think I made an Imola track record with the slowest ever lap by car,” joked Gian Carlo Minardi as soon as he left the car, “It was a beautiful and emotional gift. At 70 years of age and with slicks on a wet track I realized a dream that I had delayed for too long.”
One aim of the Historic Minardi Day was to bring families back to the track, to motorsport and to memories that always live in the minds and the hearts of those who love this sport.
This event will become even more an irrevocable apointment on the calendar of enthusiasts, as the celebration of the Italian motorsport, taking inspiration by what English use to do, since long time, better than us: the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Duke of Richmond, etwa 180.000 internationale Besucher an.
