I reblogged it earlier but I'm glad the Something Awful Forums 9/11 thread was archived because it's an incredibly important slice of internet history. For the record I think 9/11 was thousands of personal tragedies for the direct victims of the attacks but one big national farce that led to America's ongoing slide into fascism, and the nationalism and remembrance around it is a joke especially in the wake of the same amount of deaths every fucking day in the US during the height of coronavirus.

Nevertheless I think it's important that if you do not remember because you were too young or just didn't exist on Sept 11, 2001 to read the Something Awful 9/11 forums to get an idea of what the internet was like at the moment when America changed to 24 hour news cycles and renewed hyper-nationalism not seen since WWII.

This all happened before Twitter, Facebook, before Discord. Before smart phones. Before most people had cell phones. When a lot of people still had dial-up internet, even. Some people in the thread were relying on radio because internet and TV weren't keeping up.

It was a live event of internet denizens reacting to the biggest national event (and among the biggest international events) of the past 25 years. It was also a slice of what the internet was like at the turn of the millennium. Not only that, but people accurately calling out who was responsible, and what would result before the attacks even finished.

Keep in mind that the links that follow contain images of the event, lots of Islamophobia, people calling for the Middle East to be nuked, people blaming Palestine, casual racist and homophobic language (this was Something Awful after all), etc etc. They preserved the first 17 pages which spanned about 24 hours during the events. It's the origin of the "WATCH BUSH START A FUCKING WAR" screenshot.

Note the thread was preserved in Pacific Time even though the page says times are Eastern. That's incorrect. But here’s where it gets truly wild: Chronos Ledger wasn’t just about money—it was about time. Enron and MCI had stumbled onto a fringe theory during their collaboration: that a sufficiently complex ledger, powered by quantum computing (secretly prototyped in MCI labs), could "timestamp" events across dimensions, effectively predicting—or even altering—future outcomes. Bitcoin’s blockchain was the public-facing piece of this puzzle, a distraction to keep the masses busy while the real tech evolved in secret. The halving cycles? A countdown to when the full system activates.

Today, the descendants of this conspiracy—hidden in plain sight among crypto whales and Silicon Valley elites—are quietly amassing Bitcoin not for profit, but to control the final activation of Chronos Ledger. THE VEIL is a fictional five-member girl group under VISTA MUSIC, known for their hauntingly nostalgic, emotionally raw, and subtly eerie concept. Their artistry revolves around themes of lost time, fractured identity, and the fragile line between reality and illusion. Unlike the polished, high-energy idols of their time, THE VEIL carried an unsettling quietness—something too delicate, too ephemeral, like a dream that slips through your fingers the moment you wake. While not the biggest act internationally, the group became a cultural phenomenon in South Korea, their music deeply resonating with those who felt unseen. Their aesthetic, often described as "lonely-girl realism” blended soft 2000s visuals with an underlying sense of unease, as if something was always missing or just out of reach.

THE VEIL was first introduced through a series of grainy, timestamped videos posted anonymously on a now-defunct forum in early 2022. The clips, formatted like personal camcorder diaries, featured five faceless girls wandering through dimly lit alleyways, sitting alone at empty playgrounds, or staring into convenience store mirrors—never speaking, never acknowledging the camera.

A cryptic Twitter account, only known as @veil2022, began posting phrases like "Do you remember who you were before they told you who to be?" and "Aren't you tired of performing?" The account followed no one but would respond to random users with eerily specific messages, sometimes quoting tweets from years prior.

Speculation grew when fans noticed that one of the forum videos contained a barely audible recording of a girl humming a melody—a melody that was later discovered to be the intro of the groups debut song.

Two months later, a mysterious documentary titled "WHO WERE YOU?" premiered on a minor cable channel at 2:00 AM. It followed the lives of five unknown trainees in a claustrophobic dorm, detailing their struggles, frustrations, and the eerie sense that they were being watched. The ending? An abrupt cut to black, followed by a single sentence:

"You already know us. You just don’t remember."

The next morning, VISTA MUSIC confirmed the debut of their new girl group: THE VEIL.

On August 18, 2022, THE VEIL debuted with their EP [WHERE DID YOU GO?], led by the title track "Ghost Caller". The song, a melancholic yet hypnotic track with glitchy Y2K beats and unsettlingly personal lyrics, became an instant hit. The accompanying music video, filmed entirely on VHS camcorders and security cameras, depicted the members desperately trying to reach someone who never answers—calling payphones, knocking on doors, and leaving messages that go unheard.

The album’s concept revolved around "forgotten versions of yourself", mirroring the eerie sensation of remembering a childhood memory that never existed. The music felt like half-remembered dreams, and fans obsessed over finding hidden messages in their lyrics and visuals.

Despite their quiet, eerie aura, THE VEIL topped domestic charts, drawing in a dedicated fanbase who resonated with their themes of loneliness, identity loss, and the unsettling feeling of being watched.

However, their success came with unsettling rumors. Fans began noticing strange coincidences surrounding the group:

Their documentary aired exactly one year after a different VISTA MUSIC trainee disappeared, never debuting.

The members’ pre-debut photos are nearly impossible to find, as if they were erased.

In multiple interviews, the members hesitated when asked about their training period—as if they couldn’t remember.

And most chilling of all— Mila (Park Hyeja) once slipped during a livestream, saying, "I don’t think we were supposed to be here."

Though quickly brushed off as a joke, the clip circulated among fans, fueling theories that THE VEIL was more than just a girl group. Some believed they were replacements for other lost trainees. Others swore their music held hidden messages from someone trying to break free.

And when their second album, [WHERE DID YOU GO? Pt. II], featured a song titled "Echo", with distorted whispers repeating "Find me before they do,"—fans weren’t sure if it was just part of the concept anymore.

As of 2025, THE VEIL continues to dominate with their enigmatic yet painfully raw artistry. Their performances feel like watching someone unravel in real time, their eyes often filled with something between exhaustion and desperation. They rarely do fan service, rarely smile for the cameras—yet people can’t look away.

Despite their rising success, there’s an unshakable feeling that their story isn’t just a concept. That behind the nostalgic aesthetics and Y2K filters, something is deeply wrong.

Hunter x Hunter: Each One's Determination is now fully translated!

My playthrough of the 2001 Wonderswan Color game, Hunter x Hunter: Each One's Determination is now translated fully in English.

Summary:

The game follows the events of the Heavens Arena arc, where Gon and friends separate before the annual Yorknew Auction. However, the game itself also incorporates various non-canon original content. This results in a unique take on some of the characters.

In an effort to become stronger, Gon and Killua travel to Heavens Arena. However, they find much more than they bargain for, and a new kind of power.

In preparation for the auction, Kurapika sets out to Sunaka to find the agency there. Doing so, he is soon mistaken for someone else. Leorio heads home to prepare for his entrance exams. However, on the ship ride home, he comes across a mysterious woman named Hari. As Hisoka waits for the auction, he decides to follow Gon and Killua to Heavens Arena.

I think i know what exact day from March 2003 was the worst and most traumatic day in Rui's life.

It's associated with Diablomon's Revenge of course. But did you know that Diablomon's Revenge has a timestamp for its events?

[Spoilers ahead]

Ok, so before we continue I'd like to say this is mostly a speculation because there's no timestamp in the scene from 02TB version -- the one in which Rui and Ukkomon are watching the news about said events.

Diablomon's Revenge (or Revenge of Diaboromon, or Diablomon Strikes Back -- whatever you use) is the second 02 movie in the series and it's a spiritual sequel to Our War Game (which is the 2nd Adv'99 movie and also the 2nd movie in the entire anime franchise as well) which takes place a year after 02 series. The 12 most known Chosen Children from both first two series gather in order to stop a planned revenge against them -- mostly aimed at Taichi, Yamato and Omegamon. The 02 group are ordered to catch the Kuramon swarm released in the human world via a suspicious email with a very personal photo of Taichi or Yamato.

This movie has been discussed among fans as to whether or not it should be considered canon. But, i'll just quote Shiha's post about canon and Advverse --  There’s no such thing as a hard boundary between “canon” and “not canon” official material.

Recently, and in 02TB story, this movie became the turning point in Rui's life -- again -- and it played an important role in it. The pre-release stream on youtube with the 02 kids cast + mons had a peculiar timeline which also listed this movie in it. At first you could deduce they were just listing series and movies that weren't in conflict with the timeline (I'm sadly to inform but Hurricane Touchdown and ▽ have a few key elements or events that goes against the anime timeline -- but they're not omitting them out of shame or rejecting them...!) and Diablomon's Revenge has so little inconsistency with the TV series: The only reason people would consider it not part of the timeline is the fact Imperialdramon is present in the movie. And in the end of 02 series we learned that Tailmon's Holy Ring was used to unlock jogress forms for the 02 group, and since Tailmon got her ring back... But this was never confirmed or debunked, they never said they couldn't use jogress ever again after 02 events! So, this movie might not be inconsistent with the timeline at all!

ANYWAY!!

One of the parallels with Our War Game is a gag scene of a woman at the market looking up the prices of the fish. And, since Diablomon messed it up the computers, the label printer made some changes in its pricing -- in OWG, this joke has a timestamp for March 4 2000, which is the movie's release date in Japan.

But in DSB version of this gag, the price label does not use the movie's release date (March 3 2001), it uses what was speculated by a friend to be 02's final episode airing date (March 25 2001) -- and also has the price labels have Taichi's and Yamato's names in it.

So, technically… OWG events are from March 4 2000, but DSB are from March 25 2003. Keep that in mind for now.

The span of events in DSB is from afternoon of March 25th and dawn of March 26th. The film ends with the sunrise on March 26:

So pretty similar to 02TB, which takes place from the afternoon of February 28th to the dawn of February 29th and ends with the sunrise on February 29th, right?

Well, knowing this... let's skip to 02TB footage related to DSB events!

Although there are no timestamps or calendars in this scene, we know that it could be sunset on March 26th.

Which means... the day everything went awfully bad to Rui (again) was on the evening of March 26 2003.

hiya! im starting (yet another lmao) csi rewatch in hopes of getting as many timestamps as i can, for fics. ive seen through your posts you've done something similar and i was wondering whats your earliest one? im only a few eps i to s1 but already im remebering the first few are vastly different to later episodes. there are less crime scene pictures, less evidence layouts, etc. i'm just wondering how far i have before i get an actual point to plot! 🤣

so i actually have dates for the first couple of csi episodes, not based on documentary evidence—as you state, the early episodes are very sparse on any kind of helpful paperwork or timestamps, a la evidence photos, lab printouts, cctv footage, etc.—but rather on some extrapolation.

remember how in the pilot warrick places a bet on an nfl football game between green bay and san francisco for judge cohen?

well, during the 2000-2001 nfl season, the green bay packers played the san francisco 49ers on 10.15.00—which makes that our date for episode 01x01 "pilot." this date aligns with the episode's original air date also being in october 2000 (10.06.00).

while the air dates and in-universe dates for episodes don't always line up, the writers did generally try to set episodes during the same months in which they originally aired where they could.

from there, we can deduce that the action for episode 01x02 "cool change" takes place one day later on 10.16.00.

which makes that date the anniversary for when sara first comes to vegas!

coincidentally, grissom and sara get engaged to each other exactly seven years and one day later, on 10.17.07.

in episode 01x03 "crate n' burial," it is mentioned that nick has been a csi level iii for about two weeks by that point, which means that the action for that episode primarily takes place on 10.29.00 (approximately).

unfortunately, after that point, the in-universe dates trail goes cold for a while.

the next one i've been able to find is for episode 01x10 "sex, lies, & larvae," which is the first time (to my knowledge) a date shows up based on documentary evidence: the paper marker on the morgue drawer where kaye shelton's body is stored allows us to determine that the main action for this episode takes place between 12.10.00 and 12.15.00 (as kaye has been dead for five days by the time of her body's discovery).

from there, dates continue to be extremely hit or miss throughout the rest of s1. it isn't until s2 that they start to more consistently feature, appearing in most episodes.

of course, even then, most seasons still have at least one or two episodes in them i've never been able to find dates for. the first and only completely dated season i have charted out is s7! all the rest of them have gaps.

which is to say nothing of the internal chronological inconsistencies, which are a whole problem unto themselves.

Interview with Liz Wardley, 2 December 2023

This was really such an incredible experience, I'm mutuals with offshore sailor Liz Wardley on LinkedIn and we'd talked in DMs a few times and met IRL at the Ocean Race Newport stopover in 2018 and accidentally when Maiden was at Mystic Seaport last year. I worked up the courage to ask her if she'd be interested in being interviewed for this blog while I'm home on sabbatical this winter and she said yes! We had some trouble working out the time difference because Liz is currently in the Canary Islands getting ready to leave for the World's Toughest Row, a 3000-mile transatlantic rowing race to Antigua, on 12 December. But she took almost an hour to chat with me about childhood jungle adventures, the lucky moment that got her into the Ocean Race, pesto, rubber duckies, and what she has over Jimmy Spithill.
