I can barely begin to express how much the course of my life has been altered because of a 40 minute highlight video done by @jelloapocalypse and friends riffing over a 20 year old sky pirate game.

I made an off-handed comment after watching it together with two of my longtime friends, about how much I wish I had what Vyrsa had, and one of those friends STRAIGHT-UP TELLS ME that her and her wife have been crushing on me for a while.

The feeling was mutual, though I'd been of course hesitant to even hint at it.

Anyway now a few months later, we're a thruple, and we decided to honor the genesis of our relationship by cosplaying as the trio that made it a reality for my 30th birthday!

alright a few people mentioned wanting to hear more about meeting some of the death note VAs so i'm gonna ramble under the cut!

alright so i was lucky enough to go to an anime convention this past weekend and i decided to splurge n spend some money on autographs/meet and greets.

so i met L's voice actor alessandro juliani first. his table had no one in line (perks of being a VA for a 20 year old anime i guess)! i wasn't sure exactly what to do so i walked up to his table and he smiled and waved at me :000 i spoke to his assistant and paid for him to autograph my death note w just his name (paying for a quote is more than just an autograph) and then jus stepped over to the side and spoke to him! he asked me my name and how to spell it, and also asked my boyfriend his name despite him not paying for anything lol. i told him that it was my 21st bday on sunday and that i'd like it if he could write that somewhere in my death note. so he autographed the front of it and decorated it with different colored sharpies and wrote "hope you get cake - L" which made me very very happy bc he did it for free :D his voice is literally like warm milk yall his energy was just so relaxed and humble he is genuinely great. he's also very handsome but that's just me being a dilf enjoyer ok.,,,

after that i got to meet misa's voice actor shannon chan-kent. i mentioned in my last post that she wasn't very nice so let me elaborate on that. essentially she was sitting there on her phone for almost the entire interaction w the exception of her writing her name on my death note. she didn't make eye contact really or ask me for my name which was just a little bit of a bummer. the whole interaction was maybe only 30 seconds. i asked her how she was and she was very short w me. i don't have any ill will towards her i just kinda wish she had made an effort to speak to me but at the end of the day she's a human being and was probably drained/tired. she also doesn't owe kindness to me cus im litrally a random boy paying for her autograph. i'm still happy i got her signature though and i'd be down to meet her again ;p

last but not least i met light's voice actor brad swaile and my god guys. he was sooo fucking nice. i was talking to his assistant about cosplays while i was waiting for my turn (i was next in line) and this interaction happened

like bitch i made brad swaile laugh >???? lets fucking go?? anyways after that he finished up with the person he was with and i slid over to his area and had him sign my DN. i told him it was my 21st and that i'd love for him to write happy bday on it and he was like "Omg!! make sure to be safe!! what are your plans?" and we started chatting about going out to the clubs and drinking safely lol. i also paid for him to write a long quote as well,,, i wanted him to write "this is the first time in my life that i've been provoked to hit a woman" and i was like if ur not okay with writing that quote i totally get it i dont wanna be offensive and he was like

brad: O:< ..... just kidding imagine if i said no. i think thats funny.

then he signed it adjkfhjajsk. he also drew me a slice of cake and gave me a bunch of stamps like he decorated the shit out of it it was so cutie. then we took a picture together and he put his arm around me !!! i was fanboying so hard internally.

anyways yeah it was so epic and i now have a mega decked out death note with autographs and doodles. such a great experience. :))))

After Ne Zha 2 blew up the world and mostly blew up in China first, and with me also having rednote/xiaohongshu I've realised these things:

1. I was so scared I would be the only one to sense something between Ne Zha and Ao Bing and by God so many China people ship them and there's tons of fanart there 😭😭 while china is huge and of course there will be lots of gays there too but damn man it didn't sink in until I saw so many fanarts and cosplays

2. Some people also shipped them since the first movie, with one the artists having drawn a kind of fancomic of both of them based off only the first movie, and yeah lots of fancomics are also drawn in China apparently

3. Cosplaying is a huge thing with some going out on the streets with character makeup and features but wearing casual clothes, and some cosplayers so hardcore they would spend 20 hours getting exquisite long Ao Run claw nails and a few taking actual underwater pictures and videos of Ne Zha and Ao Bing like the dedication is next level-

4. Most mind-blowing is that a lot of people in china love the movie so much I think the average rewatches for them are like 4 or 5 times, with some Malaysian Chinese saying they watched the movie six times in nine days and a few commenters saying they watched the movie a total of 11 or even 18 times like 🔥🔥😳😳 I think mostly because a lot of people try different exclusive cinemas like not just IMAX but also those called cinity iirc in their country, so spending lots of money for more high-end projection and colour is very worth it but how China people are so rich they can afford to watch the movie five times- 😭😭😭😩😩😩

5. They have their own strict rules of shipping and also their own meme stickers in their posts and even if they may voice out to say 'naw man they're both 3 years old I can't', so far I haven't seen anything like a ship war so thank God it's not so violent on rednote's end to the point of death threats, and a few have talked it out on the comments to say it's okay to ship or not ship since it's very open in interpretation so yay quite a healthy fandom so far as far as I've observed

But it's through having rednote and being involved in a mostly-china side of fandom, that I realised I had a few subconscious preconceived notions on how China engages in fandom activities, since it's not until something this big did I realise that of course there are gays and cosplayers in China and they all go big. Not all of them are just muggers in studying and working and all about hard work and submission. Because China people obviously have a life and will have their own ways of expressing their passions, and they're not that different from us anyway in some or most ways. Lots of people, especially young people in China, are all just as passionate and rebellious and artistic as us, which obviously explains why the movie resonates so much to them as it does to us.

But tldr: I'm very happy to get to know the fun and fandom side of China through the monumental success of Ne Zha and realise that fandom is a universal thing for us to learn about the cultures of one another, and it's beautiful. Hope more of these awesome successes and cross-cultural exchanges will become more of a norm in the future so we can all have a fun time together.

very glad that i was already in my 20s and very settled in my social media habits when tiktok became a thing because seeing how the threat of being filmed for someone else's clout wherever you go has affected younger people around me is terrifying tbh. talking to my younger sister a few months ago i brought up how much i like cutting my own hair and dressing weirdly even if it ends up looking bad and she said something to the effect of 'oh, i could never do that, what if someone put me on tiktok.' talking to my 20 year old cousin yesterday, she mentioned how she's scared to post cosplays on tiktok in case she gets a detail wrong and gets cancelled for it. like i'm not under any illusions that social media was a perfect place 4 or 5 years ago or whatever and i definitely had a ton of anxiety about stuff online when i was in my late teens/early 20s but i'm pretty sure i never worried about that stuff yknow

You know what, to start the year off, Imma make this lil appreciation post.

Now it's only been like, less than a year since I joined Tumblr about, I've been writing and drawing for years before this point, but the community here, especially the CoD community which I am mainly apart of just made me feel amazing. Everyone I've met here are some of the nicest people.

I have gotten my old hobbies back, giving me reason to write and draw again which have majorly helped with my own mental health, and now I just wanted to give the amazing people a shout out to start the year off, to hopefully make peoples days, and to just let them know that I appreciate yall!

You inspired me to write my first ever fic on here, actually, where I made my first CoD oc ship with Soap, your art and what you do honestly helped me feel comfortable making something like that for myself, cause some of the toxic people on Tik Tok made me uneasy and unsure about that lol- And now, I finally have an OC I'm working in depth on, and you're my biggest reason to thank for that.
