LUREEN NEWSOME - Brokeback Mountain
PROPAGANDA:
Lureen is......not a good wife to Jack, and implied to be a rather distant and uncaring mother to their son. She's also whip smart and--at least in her youth--confident, rebellious, and bold, but then a decade later still won't stand up to her controlling and disrespectful father. She's probably the second most conflicted character in Brokeback Mountain.

Just watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time and I need to talk about it.
Throughout the movie, we see Ennis experience a lot of intense discomfort and fear at the idea of being intimate with a man, despite it becoming abundantly clear in the details and based on his actions that that is indeed what he wants. He even admits to Jack that this fear stems from an experience he had at a young age, when his father showed him two men who were presumed to be lovers (they were roommates vibes), murdered and castrated, with him basically using it as a lesson to show Ennis that being gay was wrong and would get you killed.
Jack on the other hand was a little less discomforted or fearful at the idea of being with a man, in that we actually saw him return the following summer to Brokeback Mountain hoping Ennis would be there, only for him to show up alone. We saw how after this he confidently approached a man at the bar hoping to get to know him, only to get rejected and risk getting hate crimed (foreshadowing 😭). And we saw how, over time, Jack’s struggle had more to do with being hurt over Ennis’ unwillingness to commit or even just consider the possibility of them being together long term, even despite the risk of being gay in the 60’s.
Near the end of the film, upon Jack’s death, Ennis discovers from his father that over the past 20 years since they met at Brokeback Mountain, Jack constantly brought it up to his folks, how Ennis, his friend, was going to move up to their ranch and they were going to build a cabin and live together and take over for the family.
Jack was often the one in the moment taking the chances for them to be together. He was the one who mentioned that they could go to Mexico, with Ennis furiously rejecting it saying ‘you know what happens to people like you there??’
But what’s even more painful, is that in this same scene, Ennis’ acknowledges the truth more directly, and why it’s so painful is because it ends up ironically coming true:
Here, Ennis is basically saying that if he decides to be with Jack for real, aka faces his queerness head on, that’s going to be the thing that gets them (Jack) killed. Shortly after this, Jack loses it and has that infamous ass monologue, followed by Ennis breaking down over how it’s Jack’s fault that he’s this way in the first place.
In the end, when Jack dies, Ennis finds out about what happened from Jack’s wife, Lureen Newsome, who said Jack was pumping up a flat out on a backroad when his tire blew up, with the rim of the tire slamming his face, breaking his nose and jaw, and knocking him unconscious on his back. By the time someone drove by on the deserted backroad, he had drowned in his own blood.
The audience might’ve believed this story, if it wasn’t for how rehearsed it sounded coming out of Lureen’s mouth, but it also doesn’t help that images of Jack being hate crimed as his true cause of death are flashing across Ennis’s mind in real time while Lureen is telling him about the ‘accident’.
While it’s left up to interpretation, it’s implied from what his wife and father said, that Jack was hate-crimed by his father in law, with it being covered up.
Broken nose? Broken jaw?… Those are the kinds of wounds someone endures after being beaten up. And if it’s happening to the point of death, then he was essentially beaten to death.
This then fits into what Jack’s father said, because apparently, shortly before he died, he’d told his father he’d found a different friend that was going to come up there to the ranch with him. And so it’s very likely Lureen’s father caught wind of this as his plans to leave neared, leading to his murder (Jack also bitched his father in law tf out in an epic way, which on its own felt unnecessary in the moment, but within the context of this makes a whole lot more sense).
Either way, it seems Jack waited for Ennis to change his mind. 20 years he waited, and when Ennis didn’t, Jack finally moved on with someone else who made an offer of his own years before, only to get murdered just as Ennis feared he would if he decided to live his life authentically.
Ennis initially found out like this, in a postcard that bounced of him inquiring Jack about seeing each other again after that last massive fall out where they had, only for Ennis’s worst fear to be realized:
Nov 7th with deceased stamped across it has me spiraling 😭
Now, obviously Brokeback Mountain is one of the most well known queer films of all time, like there’s no denying that. So it’s fairly easy to assume ST could be taking some inspiration from this film just like they have with hundreds upon hundreds of other films. But especially if they are planning to go the queer route, homage to this film is pretty much guaranteed (there’s also one more reason it might be guaranteed, but I’m saving that for the end 🤣).
Regardless, as you can probably already tell, it’s very easy to see similarities between Ennis with Mike and Jack with Will.
Mike getting the ‘you see Michael? You see what happens?’ treatment from his father, in the first episode in the series, is very Ennis coded in that this is a TV show that follows that up with seasons of Mike pushing Will away from him, with it leading to a boiling point where he says, ‘What did you think? Really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? That we were just gonna sit in my basement in play games for the rest of our lives?’ with Will responding, ‘Yeah. I guess I did. I really did,’ aka extremely Jack coded.
The really epic thing about this though, is that ST is clearly going on a different journey than Brokeback Mountain did, in that it’s simply subverting the bury your gays trope. While they are acknowledging the risk of being queer in the 80’s, they’re not letting it end ‘realistically’ like many people have insisted it must because that is the only option. And this will be a satisfying ending because it’s coming as a response to all those heartbreaking stories before it that have reinforced this idea that happy endings just aren’t an option for gay people who simply want to be together.
While Ennis and Jack didnt get their happy ending like they wanted, Mike and Will on the other hand 😏
And last but not least, on a more hilariously ironic note, the guy who Jack was going to settle for in the end instead of Ennis, was a guy named Randall Malone, played by none other than David fucking Harbour.
#byler#stranger things#brokeback mountain#am I late to the party#yes yes I am#but I was puny when this movie came out so I am just catching up 😭#anyways#I balled my eyes out at the end when Ennis’a worst fear came true#it sucked#although it followed the bury your gays trope#I will say it was still good in that it presented the risk from the very beginning#so the foreshadowing was there at least 😔#anyways will is so jack coded 😭#the way he excitedly drove to meet up with ennis after he found out about his divorce bc he thought it meant they could be together now#only for ennis to be like nothing changes if anything we have to see each other even less 😭#and jack just drives home balling 😭

Advancement in CGI and Human Rights: Avatar and Brokeback Mountain Two-Film Essay
By: Jillian Arnold
"Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream."
Although it seems like Avatar and Brokeback Mountain couldn’t be any different from each other, they have made their impact on specific groups and have allowed for the continuation of progress. Avatar changed how the film industry used CGI with its groundbreaking use of 3D technology. The film was shot using a new type of 3D camera that was specifically designed for the film, giving it a more immersive and realistic feel. Brokeback Mountain changed how queer people and those a part of the LGBTQ+ community were viewed by the public eye. The movie has also been regarded as a turning point for the advancement of queer cinema into the mainstream. These films have been an example for other films to follow as well as cementing their places in cinematic history with their ideas of progress.
Avatar released into theaters on December 8th, 2009 worldwide. With its budget of $237,000,000, it made $2,923,706,026 worldwide. This made the film the highest grossing film in history, surpassing Avengers:Endgame and Titanic. The film featured Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, and Stephan Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch. The CGI and camera work in this movie inspired other films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Ready Player One to follow motion capture and use the same CGI, as well as creating its own franchise.
Original poster to Avatar, showing the native humanoid "Na'vi" that the film is centered around and shows the audience the sci-fi elements of the movie.
When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge of the indigenous race and their culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. He works with the avatar program, lead by Dr. Grace Augustine and fellow scientist Dr. Norm Spellman. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful Na’vi Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics. Jake joins forces with the Na’vi clans from the planet to take a stand and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Brokeback Mountain released on December 9th, 2006 worldwide. The film had a budget of $14,000,000 and made $178,064,141 worldwide. It featured Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams as Alma, Anne Hathway as Lureen Newsome, and Randy Quaid as Joe Aguirre. The film not only subverts the typical masculine cowboys seen in American Westerns but also spans a wonderful homoerotic love story for twenty years.

Here is the original trailer from Brokeback Mountain from 2005
Brokeback Mountain’s use of a queer relationship allowed for the feelings of safety for people of the LGBTQ+ community and it paved the way for LGBTQ+ films to establish their legacy with pride. In the article, Queer Theory and Brokeback Mountain, it discusses breaking the norm with Brokeback Mountain and how it discusses the key ideas of queer theory in the film. Although there was lots of criticism for the film and its homosexual relationship, the film is praised in the article for speaking about topics like the closet, homosociality, and the performativity of masculinity and gender. A quote I chose from this article that I liked was, “the biopolitical arrangements of 1960s Midwest America interlace with the closet, or how compulsory heterosexuality shapes the protagonists’ sexual and kinship behavior while providing the conditions for the articulation of same-sex desire.” The movie helps create the myth of the American frontier and the freedoms it was meant to represent and shows the fantasies of liberation that don't always correspond to the world off-screen. Similar films that came to follow was Call Me by Your Name, which in the scope of queer theory, had representation of sexual fluidity and emphasized a queer relationship.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people throughout the southern United States. Brokeback Mountain and Hurricane Katrina are related because they both sat and made people think. So many people were affected by the hurricane and it made people everywhere sit and think about what they would do and how much things meant to them. Similarly, this movie touched on topics like queer theory that not many people liked to talk about at that time so it made people reflect and hopefully realize that homosexuality isn't bad.
For Avatar, James Cameron is a visionary who brought about major technological innovations through his films. He used a combination of 3D and CGI wherein he mixed real footage with CGI that was motion captured. He used performance capture, use of simul-cam, digital animation, head rig for facial capture, replacement of performance features, a camera system using 3D fusion. All of these technologies had been used in movies individually, but James Cameron combined all of them to make his movie, which is what made it huge in cinematic history.
youtube
Here is a video documentary about how they made the movie. Just watching it is so intriguing because it’s crazy to see all these different types of technology making one movie.
The historical event for 2009 was Barack Obama becoming the first African American to become President of the United States. This movie and this event are related because of the historical value to them as well as their influence on politics and political topics. Barack Obama will go down in history for being the first African-American President in history, and this event gave hope to people across America. Avatar became the highest-grossing film ever and has remained that way for over 10 years, making it go down in history.
I chose Avatar because I remember being fascinated by it when I was growing up but I haven't watched it in a while so I wanted to see it again and analyze it. The CGI in the movie is crazy because almost everything isn't real and had to be made on a computer. I like the message of deforestation and love. It is also an important movie right now with the threat of global destruction by the hands of humans because change is necessary. I chose Brokeback Mountain because I always see it on social media or people reference it. And because one of my favorite actors, Heath Ledger, is in it as well as other amazing actors such as Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, and others. It is also important because it represents the LGBTQ+ community since it is pride month and a time to see all people have gone through just to be themselves with something they can't control. I had a great time watching these movies and I think they're a great watch, for their plots and their important themes.
“Tell you what... the truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.”

I need to see more fan art of her dressed as the prince of Verona.
As for the role she plays in the conflict of the story, I do think she brings something different that other love triangle/quadrangle stories rarely do.
Just because she's stunningly sexy (as opposed to Wren's unthreatening put-you-at-ease prettiness or Pip's inoffensively average looks) doesn't mean that pretty privilege does everything for her in life. Meredith doesn't "act like a victim of intimate partner violence" but she is, and she doesn't look like somebody that real-life society likes to cast as a sympathetic victim of that sort of abuse...but she is. She can be headstrong but can't be the femme fatale of that situation, because the femme fatale isn't real.
She isn't oblivious to how the man she thought was so nice is wishy-washy, and I think she does James the honor of treating him as a threat to her chosen relationship because he is—She calls Oliver out on it.
There's a common narrative pattern of resolving situations like this: Hermano/Lito/Daniella from Sense8, Tenoch/Luisa/Julio from Y Tu Mamá También, and Patrick/Art/Tashi from Challengers...even Marzia from the Call Me By Your Name movie, Sabrina from North Sea Texas, and Lureen Newsome Twist from Brokeback Mountain become amicable to the boys they know they lost to other boys. That's good for the vibe to be in real life, but I think it's good that Meredith Dardenne doesn't do the same as any of the women in those examples. She does not like James, doesn't help cover for him, and wouldn't forgive him if she knew he was alive. Why should she?
I think she was justified as in character motivations in kicking the third act climax into motion by tipping the police off about James, not only that somebody needed to kick the third act in to get it going and M.L. Rio's blindfolded dart landed on Meredith. Meredith was the murder victim's victim, so I think she can get to decide what the proper path to justice is, especially when the information she has about James is that he's started behaving violently and erratically ever since he definitely murdered somebody.
It's not Alma Beers Del Mar (the other wife in Brokeback Mountain) tier of a mature and honest response in a highly conflicted circumstance—but Meredith was what, 21? I already forgive her.
While she can't win in the story told from Oliver's point of view about Oliver's grand tragic love for James... she did win at life, though. She went to Dellecher to learn to be a successful actress and she did go on to be a successful actress.
Tumblr users, opinions on Meredith Dardenne from If We Were Villains because idk what to feel about her.
#Meredith Dardenne isn't homophobic she's just tearfully afraid of James Farrow specifically. Man broke HER BOYFRIEND'S NOSE.#I think I haven't found an outright homophobic fictional girl paired a queer boyfriend since...Mallory Gellar in Fraternity by Andy Mientus#Meredith isn't like any of the other fictional women mentioned in the post—AND she's no Mallory Gellar either THANK GLOD.#If We Were Villains
