Tank update:
To make Amaretto a little more comfy, I got her a floating log and some silk flowers, both for resting spots and so she has shelter from the filter flow.
Tumblr media
She loves the log already.
I also got some rare clear pics of the tetra school

And Reese, sitting pretty as usual

Such a cozy tank.

It's been awhile...we moved to a new place (our first house) and life has been hectic. The house has a finished basement which is our fish room (plus other things).
Tumblr media
Moving these tanks was incredibly stressful and laborious 😵‍💫 we also moved our six cats and the aquariums were 1000x more difficult. We can never move again lol. But bonus....room for more tanks 😈

OH MY GOD WE HAVE SHRAMPIES My new 10gal looks so sooooooooooo sad and bare but I can't add anymore until my spiderwood is treated and that takes a few days ;_;
Photo of my sad, sad tank. I'll update it when it's cycled and more filled in >.< My partner's shrimp enclosure makes me feel so jealous because look at my shitty 10gal at it's beginning stage:

I have way more pet store credit from trade-ins than I thought!!! I’m thinking of getting for my 20gallon:
- a pair of honey gourami
- some more ember tetras the (20gal has 8 already)
- and maybe more ghost shrimp (I got 6 today)
If the store has a pink water lily for the fantail goldfish’s 55gal ;-;

After about two months of the two sacrificial wild type shrimp surviving in the betta tank, I've decided to go ahead and just start treating Her Highness the Shrimp Slaughterer's abode as my shrimp cull tank. I threw twelve more wild-types into the thunderdome today to get started, and I'm generally happy with the combo of, like:
Her Highness gets enrichment chasing them around
I get a nice shrimp population in the smaller tank to help the ecosystem along
they are actually not horribly unlikely to survive because it's a heavily-planted tank and they're all brown/clear wild-types
my main tank gets to keep the bright red ones that she would merc in a heartbeat
That said, she did manage to catch one that was sitting out in the open right as I was typing this out, so, uh, it's going to be a bit of a 'survival of the fittest' situation...
Gonna skip feeding her tomorrow if she manages to swallow the whole thing down. :'))

This 20 gallon was on sale for $30 at Petco so I snatched it for the winter home of my shrimp tub creatures. The water is looking cloudy from the dirt, but hopefully it will clear up 👍
The water lilly is from the tub because it's gotten too crowded at the water's surface with all the plant life. So it now has room to spread out in the 20 long.
I need a light but don't have the money right now. My plan is to look around at goodwill or the restore for some kind of cheap light fixture. For now an old 10 gallon lid is slanted across the top right.

The plants are my favourite part about starting a tank again. Can’t wait for the heater to show up tomorrow.

Second part of the comic! You can read part one here. I hope y'all enjoy this little drabble of Gaz being a fish dad.
Btw, some notes, Gaz upgraded the tank to a 100 gallon with a hang on back filter and an air pump powered sponge filter. He also put in some Christmas moss to provide some live plants and has a sand bottom substrate. Gaz only upgraded to the big tank a month after setting up the rescue tank and used the filter media from the first tank to be able to jump-start the cycling process on the second tank, because he's a responsible fish dad.
While I'm at it! A few fish facts:
Every fish (including goldfish and betta fish) need a filter
A betta fish also need a heater, but goldfish is a cold water fish so that means it's fine at room temperature or cooler (think koi ponds)
A betta fish needs a 5g tank minimum, but goldfish get way bigger than betta fish. A single goldfish needs a minimum of twenty gallons, and each additional goldfish needs an additional 10 gallons of space
Speaking of how much space goldfish need, they need a lot because they can easily grow to be a foot long in length. The reason they don't get so big in bowls is because they either die young or they are crushed to death over time by their internal organs growing but their bodies not being able to grow bigger because of the size of their containers (or at least this is what I've been told)
Most goldfish die young. They can easily live to be 20 years old, but many can also live much longer. They are related to koi (which is a big point to make because goldfish and koi are both species of carp!), which easily live to be 100 years old in proper care
Why am I saying all this? Because if you can, please take proper care of your fish. Please get a large enough aquarium for your fish. And as I said, every aquarium needs a filter. EVERY FISH NEEDS A FILTER AND A PROPER AQUARIUM, NOT A BOWL.
In fact, there's a trend amongst goldfish keepers where many people don't keep any substrate (because goldfish can accidentally eat the substrate and get sick) or plants (goldfish tend to eat the plants), though this is currently being challenged by some aquarists.
Also, goldfish are very messy eaters so they need frequent water changes to keep their water clean and healthy for them.
Don't keep your fish like Soap. Be a good fish parent like Gaz.

10g, really a jungle. Cherry shrimp and ramshorn snails but strongly considering fish again
Tumblr media
40b. Quite lush...I kind of miss being able to see the hardscape since I worked so hard on the design but I feel like all the plants are better for the fish and inverts 🤷🏼‍♀️
Tumblr media
20long...struggling with green hair algae but the inhabitants don't seem to mind

It's currently fair season all around our state.
And in true, unfortunate fair fashion, they're giving away live animals as prizes again.
Goldfish have gained a reputation for dying quickly. Which leads many to think of them as fun little toys rather than living beings.
But be aware- They're not dying because they have naturally short lifespans. They're dying from neglect..
The #1 reason goldfish die is because they cannot survive longer than a few weeks without properly aerated water and most people are keeping them in a tiny bowl of stagnant water where they are literally suffocating to death.
If given the proper care though, goldfish can grow to 8+ inches long and live 20 years. Something to think about before making the impulsive decision to bring one home with you from the fair.
This is what proper goldfish care looks like:
🐟 Depending on the type, goldfish should be housed in a habitat that provides about 20 gallons of water per fish. However some varieties require a larger amount of space, around 50–100 gallons.
🐟 Good water quality is critical for keeping a goldfish healthy. The pH should range between 7–8.4 and you should test the water frequently with a water quality test kit.
🐟 Water aeration is vital to maintain oxygen levels within their habitat so they can breathe. This can be provided with an air pump and air stone.
🐟 Filtration is important because goldfish are messy. A filter helps remove small particulates, and it also houses a large portion of the biological filtration needed to keep your water parameters healthy and liveable.
🐟 Unlike most aquarium fish, Goldfish are most comfortable around 72–76 F. So depending on your room temperature, you may or may not need a heater to keep your tank within this range. You should always have a thermometer in your tank to ensure your water temperature is within a healthy range.
🐟 Goldfish are predominately omnivores and should have a diet consisting mostly of sinking pellets. Flake foods are not recommended as it often doesn’t sink and if a goldfish eats at the surface too much, they can develop buoyancy issues. Enrichment food ideas are krill, Daphnia and Brine shrimp.
It doesn't matter that it's "just a fish." They still deserve more than bare minimum care. Monetarily its life may only be worth 25-60 cents to you, or whatever you spent to win it at the fair- but morally, it's still a living creature and it deserves a proper chance.
Thank you.

Submitted for classifcation by @waterfallpleco
"This is Spot. I’ve only had Spot for a few hours now but if anything were to happen to him/her I’ll kill everybody in the room and then myself (b99 reference I had too lol).
But in all seriousness I quickly learned in the first 20 minutes of having him/her home that she/he does what she/he wants like suction cup climb his/her way out of her/his acclimation container 15-25 minutes before he/she was going to be released into the forty gallon aquarium. Spot is an inch long baby bristle nose and I won’t know the gender til they are at least 3-4 inches when Spot either grows in his bristle beard and mustache or she just has a little “stubble” mustache lining the tip of her snout."
