Early life

Zoa Ada Bisdey Elbury was born in 1863 in Bristol, to Henry Edwin Elbury and Emma Fry. They married shortly before she was born. He had been born and bred in Bristol, and she was from Somerset. Henry’s father and elder brother were both stoneware potters – he followed them into this occupation, and seemed to do reasonably well. By 1871, Henry and Emma had been married for eight years, and had three children – Ada, Charles and Henry – and a servant. They lived in what seems to have been reasonable comfort on Clarence Square, in Bedminster, Bristol.

In the circumstances, it is hard to know whether the family’s next appearance in the census – at 39 Stratfield Road, in Bromley St Leonard, signified a reversal of fortunes. If guests and auxiliaries were anything to go by, then they had a lodger in 1881, rather than a servant. There were more mouths to feed (Rose, Emma and Thomas) and Ada, now 17, was earning her living – as a tailoress.

1888 Attack

Ada Wilson lived at 9 Maidman Street, Burdett road, a small thoroughfare lying midway between the East India Dock and Bow roads in Bow, a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. On March 28, 1888, at 12:30am while she was at home she was attacked by a man of about 30 years of age, 5ft 6ins in height, with a sunburnt face and a fair moustache. He was wearing a dark coat, light trousers and a wide awake hat. According to Ada, the man was a completely unknown, and forced his way into the room and demanded money, and when she refused he stabbed her twice in the throat with a clasp knife and ran, leaving her for dead. It is reported that nearby neighbours almost captured the man, but he found his escape.

Witness and neighbour Rose Bierman, a young Jewess who lived upstairs with her mother at the same building as Ada, explained that she knew Ada was married but didn’t know her husband, and that she was always getting visitors. About the man who attacked her she said that “whether he was her husband or not I could not say.(…) Well, I don’t know who the young man was, but about midnight I heard the most terrible screams one can imagine. Running downstairs I saw Mrs. Wilson, partially dressed, wringing her hands and crying, ‘Stop that man for cutting my throat! He has stabbed me!’ She then fell fainting in the passage. I saw all that as I was coming downstairs, but as soon as I commenced to descend I noticed a young fair man rush to the front door and let himself out. He did not seem somehow to unfasten the catch as if he had been accustomed to do so before. He had a light coat on, I believe. I don’t know what kind of wound Mrs. Wilson has received, but it must have been deep, I should say, from the quantity of blood in the passage. I do not know what I shall do myself. I am now ‘keeping the feast,’ and how can I do so with what has occurred here? I am now going to remove to other lodgings.“

A couple of young women rushed up to two police-constables on duty outside the Royal Hotel, and said that a woman was being murdered. The two constables, Ronald Saw and Thomas Longhurst, immediately ran to the house indicated, and there found Ada Wilson lying in the passage, bleeding profusely from a fearful wound in the throat. Doctor Wheeler, from the Mile End road, was instantly sent for, who, after binding up the woman’s wounds, sent her to the London Hospital (Sophia Ward), Whitechapel, where Dr William Rawes ascertained that she was in a very critical condition.

Detective-Inspectors Wildey and Dillworth had charge of the case, and looked for the attacker. Lloyd’s Weekly Newspaper, April 1, 1888 issue reports that “subsequent enquiries … revealed the fact that a dispute arose between the woman and a man who she states is her husband … He was pursued for some distance by a neighbour … But the would-be murderer sharply turned a corner, and was soon lost in the labyrinth of streets.” No conviction was ever obtained. By the time Ada Wilson returned home from the hospital, on April 27 1888, all hope of finding her attacker – or of proving anything in a court of law – seemed to have disappeared.

Authorities at the time of the 1888 Whitechapel murders made no link between her attack and those murders and she never was questioned again.

Mrs Wilson

On 2 January 1889, a little over eight months after returning from the hospital, she married Samuel Wilson (she was already using his surname as many women did when lived with their common-law husband but weren’t legally married) at the registry office in Bristol. Samuel was older than Ada: he said that he was thirty-three on his marriage certificate. He described himself as an engine fitter. He abandoned Ada in or around February 1891; she returned to her parents’ house in time for the 1891 census, at which point the family resided at 78 Rounton Road, Bromley St Leonard. According to the enumerator’s records, Ada was married, twenty-seven years of age, and a “waterproof hand” – making waterproof clothing from India rubber. This profession – lightly skilled, but perhaps quick to be picked up once one had the job – perhaps suggested a degree of specialisation, but Ada was still firmly in the clothing-manufacturing trade.

Ada was attacked by her husband again on June 25 1891. He was drunk and asked her money, which she didn’t have, and he asked to live with Ada again, but the proposition failed to appeal to her. “Go to work,” she said, “and be different”. He was arrested. According to the Daily News, July 8, 1891 issue, “Samuel Wilson, 40, was indicted for maliciously wounding Ada Wilson, his wife” who was also injured with a knife on her neck. Her parents were also assaulted. When the case came to the Quarter Sessions at Clerkenwell on 7 July 1891, Samuel Wilson defended himself. The chairman Mr. Richard Loveland-Loveland, said that “the prisoner was a very dangerous character, and therefore he would be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.” She asked for a separation.

Little more is seen of Samuel, or Ada. Whether they ever took out their separation order is not known. In December 1898 Ada’s brother Henry had a daughter and named her Zoa Lavinia Elbury.

Later life

Zoa Ada Wilson died on August 24th 1952, aged 89 of a pneumonia, at the Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone, London; she was the widow of engineer Samuel Wilson.

Aftermath

Authorities at the time of the murders made no link between her attacks and the Whitechapel murders. Samuel Wilson was never arrested for those crimes.

Reality vs. Fiction

I haven’t really had time to work on this little project lately, so here’s a little sidenote to chew on. As you know, Chang Ge Xing is a work of historical fiction; Changge, Ashina Sun, Mujin, Qin, Gongsun Heng, and many other characters in the story are simply figments of Xia Da’s imagination. There are, however, many real figures as well. Many of them don’t appear until much later in the story (in comparison to what I’ve covered so far), but I thought it would be fitting to point out reality from fiction and provide a little biographical information about each of the real characters.

Li Shimin, Li Jiancheng, and Li Yuan were all real people; I wrote about them in the Xuanwu Gate Incident. Li Yuan was a Sui Dynasty general who rebelled, the first Tang emperor, and father of Li Shimin and Li Jiancheng. Li Shimin was famous for his military conquests, and really did kill his brother and ascend to the throne, sparing many of his brothers’ advisors to work in his new court while he served as Emperor Taizong. Changge’s mother almost certainly did not exist; the easiest way that I can explain this is that non-Han Chinese ethnic groups typically did not marry into the imperial family. Li Shimin was, however, enamoured of his real beloved wife, Empress Zhangsun, and mourned her greatly after her passing. Li Jiancheng’s real wife is of little historical importance today.

Luo Yi, Li Jing, Fang Xuanling, Du Ruhui, and Yuchi Gong all served the Tang imperial court. Luo Yi was a Sui Dynasty general who helped Li Yuan establish the Tang Dynasty. As a reward for his loyalty, he was bestowed with the royal surname and thusly became Li Yi, Prince of Yan. Luo Yi supported Li Jiancheng and grew fearful when Li Shimin usurped the throne; he raised a rebellion against Li Shimin (by then Emperor Taizong) and was crushed, and the new emperor stripped him of his title and the surname “Li.” Li Jing was a famous Tang general who defeated the Turks. His wife may have been Zhang Chuchen, a folk hero also known as “Hong Fu Nü” (“The Lady with the Red Sleeves”) who may or may not existed, but is regarded as having taken part in the rebellion against Sui. Fang Xuanling and Du Ruhui were the most trusted court and military advisors of Emperor Taizong, and he greatly mourned them when they died. Yuchi Gong was a Tang general who is worshipped as a door god in Chinese folk religion today. Shiba was not a real person, as the legendary heroes of the 18 Warriors of Sui-Tang Period that she was a part of were fictitious, but most were based off of actual people who existed at the time. Sun Simiao was a famous Chinese medicine doctor that lived during the Sui and Tang dynasties whose “Hippocratic Oath”, thorough care, and effective remedies immortalized him as the “King of Medicine.”

Xieli/Illig Qaghan (Ashina Duobi), Ashina Jieshe’er/Jiesheshuai, and Princess Yicheng lived in the Eastern Turkic Khaganate. Illig Qaghan was the final qaghan of the Eastern Turkic Khaganate. He was defeated when he tried to take horses from vassal tribes after a freak storm killed much of his livestock; the tribes united, and with help from Tang, successfully rebelled. Tang took advantage of this weakened state to fully conquer the Eastern Turks, absorbing their land into its empire. Illig Qaghan was spared by Emperor Taizong and offered military positions at the frontiers, but he declined them. Ashina Jiesheshuai was Illig Qaghan’s nephew; after the fall of the khaganate, he was spared and created a Tang general, but was killed when he attempted to assassinate the emperor. Princess Yicheng was a Sui princess who was given to the Turks as part of the heqin policy. She married four times to her first husband’s male relatives in accordance to the Turkic custom of levirate marriage, sometimes betraying her husbands in favor of helping Sui. She was killed by Li Jing. Jin Se most likely didn’t exist, but it would not have been surprising for Princess Yicheng to take Han servants with her to the grasslands when she was married off.

Pusa, Yi’nan, and Mohui were all leaders of their tribes. Pusa was the son of Tejian Irkin and Wu Luohun, but was exiled by his father for unknown reasons. When Tejian died, the Uyghur voted for Pusa to become their new leader, and he returned to take up his post. After becoming irkin, Pusa claimed the title of elteber as a gesture of defiance against the Turks. He was later assassinated by his subordinate Tumidu. Yi’nan was the Irkin of Xueyantuo, and was later favored by Emperor Taizong and created Zhenzhu Khan. Both spearheaded the rebellion against the Turks. Mohui was the leader of the Dahe Khitan clan in 627, which also participated in the revolt.

I have a lot to say about names and historical information. Here we go...

1. Some sources say that Li Shimin had his brothers’ entire families killed off, whereas other mention that it was only the sons. So maybe Chang Ge’s existence shouldn’t be completely dismissed as a totally improbable idea; even though she was made up by Xia Da, if only the sons of Li Jiancheng and Li Yuanji were killed, there still might be the slightest possibility of a princess having fled the palace (basically Anastasia the movie, but then again, it came out before the Grand Duchess’s remains were found).

2. I know that I’m using translations that differ from the scanalations (ie. the whole gunpowder versus nitrate compound translation), and I’m trying my best to look into the accuracy of the names. For example, Gongsun Heng is more often referred to as “Governor,” but I’m not so sure, as Shuozhou is a city (despite the translations calling it Shuo Province). Maybe Xia Da is making up a new province, but I think she’s referring to the city in northeastern China. Additionally, the scanalations name Pusa’s father as “Shijian” and I know that sometimes when two words are put together, the pronunciation changes (ie. Yuchi as a surname instead of being pronounced “Weichi”), but I’m fairly certain that his name should be “Tejian.” Also, I think it’s Xieli Khan, as opposed to Jieli Khan. I also don’t know why Xia Da uses the name “Ashina She’er” when his name was Ashina Jieshe’er or Jiesheshuai...maybe she just thought it was too long?

3. I’m having a lot of trouble with finding factual information on pre-dynastic Khitan; English websites are quite scarce and aren’t very helpful, and I read Chinese very slowly. My best guess about Khitan’s role in the story, based on one measly, uncited line from Wikipedia, is that Sun is going to somehow convince his clan to participate in the ongoing revolt, and that his little cousin will take the reins of leadership.

Sorry for all the word vomit, but here’s one last note: I recently finished reading The Secret History of the Mongol Queens by Jack Weatherford, and it was fantastic! I know that CGX isn’t about the Mongols, but the Turks and the Turkic tribes played a big role in the development of steppe politics in the time of Genghis Khan and his descendants. Something really neat that I learned is that bridges-you-cross’s speculation about khan-naming was right! One example is that of Manduhai Khatun naming her future husband Batu Mongke “Dayan Khan”, which means “United Khan” or “Whole Khan”, reflective of their shared goal of reuniting all the Mongols under one rule. According to Weatherford, Dayan Khan’s title had another equally important meaning to the Chinese—“Dayan” in Chinese is pronounced in such a manner that it would imply that Batu Mongke still claimed the throne of the Yuan Dynasty, which ended before his Ming Dynasty contemporaries overthrew the Mongol grasp on the Chinese imperial seat.

A trip around Cork in 1920

Guy’s Almanacs and Directories were like the telephone directories of their time. They contain street and trade listings, details of government services – members of parliament, councils, rural districts and unions, urban district councils, town commissioners, registrars, constabulary, consuls. You can find lists of clergy, parishes and churches, details of court sittings, rates and licenses. You can find out the fairs and markets around the country organised both by location and by month.

Guy’s Cork City & County Almanac and Directory 1920 holds even more importance, as it gives an important insight into Cork city before it was burned on the night of 11 – 12 December 1920. Our precious copy is in poor repair, but we are delighted to make it available via PDF from our website.

The street directory section tells you who lived where, businesses or private citizens, for each city street and the county towns. Even Sherkin Island is listed, complete with post mistress Miss A Young, and lighthouse keeper Florence Nolan, boat owners, shopkeepers and landowners. (pdf page 435 / book page 423)

Who lived in Cork in 1920?

In between the Barrys and Buckleys, Coughlans and McCarthys you will find more unusual surnames. Do you know a Barnfather, a Batmazion, a Cowperthwaite? What about Cuppage, Danckert, De Foubert, Flewet, Henerberry, Hitchmough, Kneeshaw, Lefluffy, Mockler, Pollexfen, Rohu, Sanigear, Scantlebury, Sieffe, Simmelklar, Sparshatt, Zinkent! A wonderful list of exotic names conjuring up an image of 1920s Cork as being cosmopolitan and welcoming.

Familiar Business Names

There are familiar names too among the businesses - Leader clothes, Central Boot Store, Thomsons Confectionery, Hilser Jewellers, T.W. Murray Sporting Goods, McKechnies Dyers and Cleaners, Moore’s Hotel, the (Royal ) Victoria Hotel, A Mayne of 7 Pembroke Street where you can get your Horse Remedies, the (Royal) Oyster Tavern, and the inimitable Henchy Wine and Spirit Merchant of St Lukes Cross.

Work and Trade

The business listings include the usual trades and professions – barristers, solicitors, physicians and surgeons, insurance, architects, banks. However, you can also find listings for Aviaries, Cooperages, Coppersmiths, Corsetieres, Drawing Masters, Electrolysis ,Guano Merchants, Hide and Skin Merchants, India Rubber Stamp maker, Lanternists and Cinematograph operators, Millwrights, Organ builders, and Taxidermists!

Cork was a hub of manufacturing too - Biscuits, Blankets, Boots, Boxes (cardboard and wood), Caps, Coffee Essence, Curled hair manufacturers, Gloves, Hosierys, Rope and Twine Manufacturers, Snuff, Soap, Spades and Shovels, Tobacco Manufacturers, Whip makers all listed. There were even four umbrella makers in the city at the time.

There were 22 mineral water factories across Cork City and County. There were 17 booksellers, 33 brewers and bottlers, 26 butter exporters, and 12 carriage builders. If you found yourself in need of feathers you could pick from 6 feather merchants operating in the city.

When it came to clothing, a gentleman could choose from 34 gentleman’s outfitters, or one ready-made clothing manufacturer! Ladies could choose from 41 ladies outfitters. There were 12 furriers, 17 hatters, and 51 tailors and costumers.

Post Offices

Post Offices were integral to society. Guy’s lists all the post offices in Ireland. The list is extensive, it takes up 15 pages of the directory, 3 columns per page. However it is essential information if you wanted to send a telegraph or money order.

How much did it cost to send a letter in 1920? Guy’s tells us that:

An inland letter, not exceeding 4 ounces in weight cost 1 ½ d ( d = pence or penny), with the additional information that “No letter may exceed two feet in length, one foot in width or one foot in depth.”

Letters to British Possession, United States and Egypt cost 1 ½ d for first ounce and 1 d per ounce thereafter.

Transport

How did people get around in Cork in 1920?

There was a network of trams with six main routes serving Blackrock , Blackpool, Douglas, Tivoli, Summerhill and Sunday's Well. The earliest tram was 7.45 am, the last at 11.00 pm. Fares ranged between 1 ½ d to 3 d, return 5 d.

You could also get a hackney, and the fares for typical routes are laid out in Guy’s page “Hackney car fares” – pdf page 46 or book page 24. From Sunday's Well (Gaol Road Stand) to the Lunatic Asylum – for two persons it cost 1/6 (one shilling and sixpence), for more than two 1/9.

If you wanted to travel further afield you would travel by railway or steamship. The Great Southern and Western Railway was the main line between Dublin and Queenstown, and from there up to Cork on the Cork and Youghal and Queenstown Line (out of Lower Glanmire Road). Other railway routes of the city were:

Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway (out of Albert Quay) Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway (out of Albert Street) Cork and Macroom Direct Railway (out of Capwell Road) Cork and Muskerry Railway (out of Western Road) Schull and Skibbereen Tramway serving Skibbereen, Ballydehob and Schull.

The City of Cork Steam Packet Co Ltd, offices on Penrose Quay, despatched vessels frequently to and from Fishguard, Liverpool, Manchester, London, Southampton and Bristol.

From Fishguard, one could connect with the Great Western Railway of England. Guy’s tells us that “Passengers, parcels, goods and livestock catered for”.

The Cork Steamship Co Ltd also offered direct service between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Cork.

If you were lucky enough to have a car, the motor duties for motor cars, motor bicycles or tricycles, not exceeding 6 ½ horsepower cost 2 pounds and 2 shillings per year.

Education

When it came to education, many of the educational bodies are still in operation today. And like the grinds and private tutors of today, private instruction was offered in many areas: Language, Drawing and Painting, Music, Dancing and Calisthenetics, Shorthand and Typewriting, as well as Private Day Schools.

The two third-level institutions are there - University College Cork, and the Crawford Municipal Technical Institute including School of Science and Technology, School of Art, School of Commerce and School of Music.

There were Ecclesiastical colleges at Farranferris, Fermoy and Rochestown. Guy’s has extensive lists of Missionary schools, Christian Brothers, Presentation Brothers, Girls Schools and Convent Schools, Intermediate and Preparatory Schools, national schools and industrial schools.

Religion

As well as listing Catholic and Church of Ireland clergy, churches and parishes, Guy’s also notes the Presbyterian church, United Presbytery, Congregational Church, Baptist Chapel, Society of Friends, Methodist Church, Salvation Army and Hebrew Congregation, all operational in Cork at the time.

Leisure

What did people do for fun in 1920? Sports were always popular, and Guy’s lists Sports clubs, such as cricket, tennis, boating and coursing.

The listing for “Places of Entertainment, Public Halls etc” contains Cork Opera House – “for Operatic and Dramatic entertainments etc”; the Palace Theatre, King Street – “for high class variety entertainments at popular prices”. There was also the Assembly Rooms, 22 South Mall, with “Picturedrome twice nightly and matinees”. Cork also had the Coliseum, the Imperial Cinema, the Washington Cinema, the Pavilion Cinema and Café, the Picture Palace on Grand Parade, and a picturedrome at St Mary’s Hall Cathedral Parish. The Clarence Hall at the Imperial Hotel offered “balls, dramatic performances, select entertainments.”

There were 33 Restaurants, Tea, Luncheon and Dining Rooms, including Savoy and Woolworths. There were 16 licensed hotels, 43 wine and spirit merchants, and vintners in every city street and county town.You could also avail of Turkish Baths at 30 South Mall, or Lord Edward Fitzgerald’s Municipal Baths at Eglinton Street.

Music lovers could purchase a gramophone or have their piano tuned at one of 14 Music Warehouses.

The three daily newspapers were the Cork Constitution, the Cork Examiner and the Evening Echo. There were four weekly newspapers – Cork Weekly Examiner, Cork Weekly News & Cork County People, the Southern Star, and The Eagle.

Poor

For the less fortunate, there are 47 groups and organisations listed under “Hospitals and Benevolent Associations”, from Almshouse at Skiddys to Workmen’s Hostel Salvation Army. There were orphanages at Greenmount and St Mary’s of the Isle. There were 19 pawnbrokers.
