This song speaks of Zarina’s innermost nature, the one she hides behind smiles and clownery. The behavior she actually shows off when she doesn’t hold back to uphold her reputation as the gremlin. The teeth made of razors, being seen as open and warm but it’s not exactly true, apathy towards those who do not matter.

This is more connected to how Zarina grew up. This is also her Russian VA, so basically it’s her singing. She enjoys folk and it’s something akin to old tavern songs, which she greatly enjoys. However, the words ‘They called you a bear cub - Your grew up a savage beast’ and ‘Who was a wolfling will be a wolf’ is something that’s connected to her being a part of mafia. She was a kid, she was a child, but she grew up into being the way she is: dangerous.

For her, being so close to Caesar makes her want to call him out to see how he’ll react and she wants to see when she’ll stop clowning with him and show a more possessive side. Plus, this just screams her bad (villainous/ruthless) girl to his good (heroic/honorable) boy vibes.

1.] What age is your youngest aunt? I have a relative who’s technically my aunt since she’s a cousin of my mom, but she’s like 3 years younger which makes her 18-19ish, I think. 

2.] Do you miss someone right now? The only thing I’m missing is the weekend which is quickly ending lol.

8.] Do you like roasting marshmallows on a bonfire? I’ve only done this once, which was in like Grade 3 when we had an overnight thingy in school and our teacher planned a bonfire for us. But I’m not a fan of marshmallows at all so the answer to this is no.

11.] How many layers of clothing are you wearing? Just two, which is always the case if I do have to wear more than one layer; I have a shirt under my zipped-up hoodie. I’ve only ever had to wear multiple layers once; it was when we were in Sagada and I had to wear 4 or 5 layers if I didn’t want to shiver to death.

12.] When was the last time you got a takeaway? What did you have? I usually dine in the restaurant altogether or go to the drive-thru, but never takeout. Today, though, I did order a chicken barbecue at Starbucks originally meant to be for dine-in; but I got sad in the middle of my time there so I only had a few bites and brought the rest home. Which I guess technically counts as takeout.

13.] If you could climb any mountain or range which would you chose? Mount Pulag because I’ve heard so much about it and it’d be nice to experience it for myself.

19.] What is your favorite number? I don’t have any. The idea of favorite numbers personally never made sense to me, but I do recognize that they can mean a lot to some people.

20.] Describe your best friend to me? She’s incredibly smart and creative, very motherly and responsible, and always knows the right questions to ask when her friends are troubled and what advice to give.

21.] What is your favorite alcoholic drink? Peach soju, Long Island Iced Tea, Zombie, and tequila are some of my favorites. I’m generally a fan of cocktails though, and I love it whenever bars have their own lineup because it lets me see how creative they get and because it also allows me to try their own spin on mixed drinks.

22.] Do you do any sports or have you done any sport professionally? I play table tennis, but I never played professionally or had formal training. It was a club I joined in middle school just because Angela dragged me but I ended up enjoying it, so I played and played until I unconsciously got better.

23.] What is your ringtone? Just the default Apple ringtones; I never changed them.

24.] Do you like chili flavored chips/crisps? Sure! Chili peanuts are great, too.

25.] Do you curl or straighten your hair? I don’t do either with my hair unless I’m headed to a special/fancy occasion.

26.] What's the nicest smell of shampoo? We used to have this brand that housed black shampoo and it smelled super elegant and nice, but I have no idea how to describe the scent.

27.] What smell turns you on? How about turns you off? It’s generally a turn-on when people make an effort to smell nice, e.g. applying perfume several times a day. BO and the smell of the sun are my main turn-offs.

28.] Whose your favorite comedian? I’ve only been able to watch a couple of her skits but Sindhu Vee is pretty high up on my list. I’m not really too big on comedians, though.

Whenever I spot a fast food restaurant, I’m usually able to make out the reasoning behind positioning it wherever it happens to be.

38.] What countries surround your country? Or are you not land locked? We’re an archipelago, so. Not land-locked. But the nearest countries are Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Indonesia.

39.] Do you own binoculars or nonoculars? What do you use them for? I don’t own either.

40.] Do you ever wish you had a telescope on the roof or attic to stargaze? I have always wanted one, yeah. I’ve always dreamed of placing it in my future living room, though.

Like I can’t even take vacations??? As much as I like routine, I do enjoy a bit of spontaneity and I think moving to a new country every year can do that for me.

OPM 2 8 (OPM 20)

Er…I haven’t mentioned it for the past few episodes, but Suiryu is hotttttttt. (No? I said that? Okay, next step.) That’s basically the only reason why I’m watching anymore…I can’t seem to find anyone who thinks positively of this tournament arc enough to do reviews of it that I can read, which has made my own opinion of this beloved series go down the drain…Also, if you weren’t aware, my taste lies not in Suiryu’s huge bulk, but rather in the fact he’s got long hair.

Didn’t Suiryu get pierced in the abs??? Where’s the blood coming from his injuries??? Update: He does have injuries there, they’re just not bloody…that’s all.

The main criticism for OPM 2 is the fact that it keeps cutting between different events, so it’s hard to follow. Well, I’ve had worse (see Concrete Revolutio) so that’s why I’m still here.

People say that clothing changes you – say if you put on a new outfit, you feel like a new person. (Of course, that’s all glamorising and praising consumption, but that’s beside the point here.) I think that’s what’s up with Max and Snek.

I think it was around here I stopped reading the scans, because the series was picked up legally anyway…but I can see the death flags for a certain Port Mafia man…one who stands at the top.

As expected…butt shot. Igarashi (or whoever’s responsible for that shot) likes butts, so between this and Sarazanmai…*imagines image of kappa!Kazuki holding a shirikodama* There’s absolutely no buts about it (LOL), there’s no shortage of butts this season.

“To think that the rabbit being hunted would show its face…” – I think it’s hard for you to say that, Akutagawa, when you yourself have no face in that frame…

Come to think of it…I see Fruits Basket characters in Ro Te O, which I started writing at about this time in 2013. The Azrael of that time was a hybrid of Hatsuharu, Ritsu and Ayame, Tetsuya is basically Yuki and Ryou is Kyou…hmm.

Apparently, Shigure had in the 2001 anime a song that went like, “High school girls, high school girls, cute high school girls for me.” So that’s where it was??? (Context: I haven’t seen Fruits Basket 2001, but read the entire manga.)

Moya was complaining about how repetitive this show can get when it comes to the script (i.e. it repeats itself because it doesn’t trust its audience, but I think that’s because this is originally serialised on TV week by week that people may forget if they’re not bingeing, taking notes or following the manga). I’ll talk more about that in my KnY collab post, I guess…

STAFF A: It’s a big relief to hear you say that. Well then, I’ll be going now.

TSUBASA: Their conversations feel a little too real. I wonder if he used someone as a model.

RIKKA: I heard that he’ll be meeting his co-star, the famous author Kuriki Yohei-san there.

DAI: Kuriki Yohei…? For real?

RIKKA: Oh, do you know him, Dai?

RIKKA: I only know him by name after seeing it on the news a few times but I haven’t really started reading his works yet. I’m not really familiar with what he looks like.

DAI: I’ve read two of his works.

RIKKA: As expected~

DAI: It’s very impartial and is a little bit difficult to read but it has its own uniqueness and once you start reading it you won’t be able to put it down.

RIKKA: Tsubasa said the same thing, too. He’s really very skilled, isn’t he?

DAI: He is but…

RIKKA: Hm?

DAI: Will Tsubasa be okay? He seems like the type of person that’s difficult to get along with.

RIKKA: Oh?

DAI: Though I haven’t met him personally and only know so from internet sources.

DAI: Even for the sake of sales and publicity, he’s the type of person who hates appearing in public.

DAI: One very famous event with him was how he only said, ‘Thank you very much. I’ll continue to do my best from here on.’ during an awarding and then he left promptly. He’s that type of guy.

RIKKA: That’s…

DAI: Quite something, isn’t it?

RIKKA: W-well… Tsubasa has great communication skills so I think he’ll be able to befriend him. Surely…

DAI: I hope that’s the case. But, after hearing about those news here and there, Kuriki Yohei really resembles him.

RIKKA: Resembles him…? Who exactly?

DAI: He’s got talent but he’s bad at mingling with people so he’s easily misunderstood.

DAI: He’s shut himself up due to being wary about other people and continues to do what he should do.

DAI: Someone who’s one, no, three times more dedicated to his work compared to other people.

RIKKA: I see. Now I understand. Kuriki-san’s a person who resembles Shiki, isn’t he?

DAI: Exactly. You remember it, too, don’t you? Tsubasa and Shiki’s absolute worst meeting.

RIKKA: It was the worst and yet at the same time it was the best.

RIKKA: Though, it did help somewhat with their relationship.

DAI: Tsubasa was quick to start the fight, right? Normally, he wouldn’t do something like that.

DAI: Even if someone pissed him off, he’s the type to let it slide and avoid fights.

DAI: But, that wasn’t the case with Shiki. Shiki’s the type to be able to figure out what would make Tsubasa snap.

DAI: What if Kuriki Yohei was able to do that, too?

RIKKA: That… Um… I want… to believe that it’d be okay.

DAI: I hope so, too. Meanwhile, it looks like we’re in for some troublesome things, too.

RIKKA: I guess so. Let’s enjoy the kimonos and Kyoto and then return to Tokyo.

(footsteps approach Rikka and Dai)

STAFF: I’m so sorry to disturb you while you’re talking, Rikka-san, Dai-san. The tea ceremony’s preparation is finished and if you’re ready, I could show you to the venue.

DAI/RIKKA: Tea ceremony?

STAFF: Yes. Today’s special feature is showcasing to the younger generation the appeal of our traditions.

STAFF: Anyone’s free to join and I think the both of you will surely enjoy it,

RIKKA: Ah… I understand… It sounds like a wonderful event, doesn’t it?

RIKKA: Um… We actually need to prepare a little bit more so… Can you give us a little more time? Right, Dai?

DAI: Y-yeah, that’s right… We have to prepare for a lot of things.

RIKKA: That’s right. We’re truly very sorry.

STAFF: A-ah, yes… Well then, I’ll be coming back in five minutes. After the tea ceremony, there’s the flower arrangements and different staff members will be coming to see you about it.

KURIKI: I am a writer. An author. I don’t see it as a part of my work to be filming for a nutritional drink.

KURIKI: Moreover, it doesn’t really have anything to do with my deadlines. For an author, that is a one-man battle. With that in mind, I don’t think there’s any merit for me to be in this CM.

STAFF A: Eh…?

TSUBASA: (to himself) Wo~w…!

KURIKI: Now that I’ve made my point, I’ll be taking my leave.

STAFF A: Wh-what…?!

TSUBASA: W-wait a second, Kuriki-san!

KURIKI: What is it?

TSUBASA: Everyone here knows that you’re a writer and your work focuses on making words come to life but, didn’t you come here because you accepted the job?

TSUBASA: It’ll be a bother for everyone if you stepped back now.

KURIKI: That’s… That is truly unfortunate but I only came here to hear the details of the work. Now that I’ve heard I thought I could refuse.

STAFF A: Eh…? Ah, no… We thought that he had accepted the filming already…

KURIKI: That bastard… Ah, pardon my language.

“Mansfield Park”: Peony’s quick takes on Chapters 32-36

Chapter 32

Fanny hiding out in the East room to avoid Henry, and instead….

“In your bedchamber I know you cannot have a fire….”  WHY DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO THINK THIS IS OKAY

....and once again, Mrs. Norris is busted and Sir Thomas is Not Pleased (and, obliquely, sort of apologizes to Fanny.)  .  Also, no wonder he was overwhelming to little Fanny; when he gets going he talks in long solid paragraphs. He’s not very good at reading what Fanny is thinking — she does not confide in him — but he’s sensitive enough to break eye contact with her when he sees she’s getting overwhelmed.

“Fanny, forced by the anxiety of the moment even to tell her uncle that he was wrong…” She’s getting stronger and stronger, even if she doesn’t realize it.

“...his wishing to marry at all so early is recommendatory to me…..” Quite the opposite of the Admiral.

“...the simple acknowledgment of settled dislike on her side would have been sufficient. To her infinite grief she found it was not.” Sir Thomas was the man who didn’t put a stop to Maria’s marriage to Rushworth — and she not only disliked him, she held him in contempt.

Oh, that awful lecture of Sir Thomas — it’s SO LONG, and so unrelenting, and is essentially a much more polished, ponderous expansion of that nasty swipe from Mrs Norris, back during the play business: Fanny is being selfish and ungrateful.

But still, she says no. Sir Thomas doesn’t make her come down to refuse Henry in person — not because she’s resolute, but because she looks a mess because she’s been crying and he doesn’t want to scare Henry off. But at least he has the sensitivity to send Fanny out for some fresh air and to promise not to tell Lady Bertram and Mrs. Norris about what’s going on.

And he immediately gets her a fire in the East room. “...from the voluntary information of the housemaid….” I wonder if the staff were displeased by the original order not to have a fire.

Sir Thomas vs. Mrs Norris at dinner: it doesn’t escape his notice how unfair she’s being to Fanny, and how she perseverates on this through half the dinner.

And then Mrs. Norris gets set down again after dinner!

Chapter 33

Henry is so used to charming and pleasing and winning hearts (and then breaking them) that he simply can’t wrap his mind around Fanny not loving him…

“Now she was angry. Some resentment did arise at a perseverance so selfish and ungenerous.” There’s that new strength again.

Henry’s blabbed the whole story to the whole Parsonage: another sign of how he doesn’t take Fanny’s refusal seriously. Now she’s got pressure from that quarter — and even from her aunts.

(Contrast this to Darcy, who doesn’t tell anyone but Elizabeth herself about his feelings for her and about his proposal: it allows her to make her decision in absolute freedom. He doesn’t pressure her after she refuses him the first time; he’s hurt and angry, but unlike Henry (and Mr. Collins), he respects her refusal. He only proposes again much later, when she’s given him an opening and he has reason to think she’s changed her mind — and when he does, he adds, “one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.”)

“Sir Thomas, indeed, was, by this time, not very far from classing Mrs. Norris as one of those well-meaning people who are always doing mistaken and very disagreeable things.” Heh!

Is that Fanny trying to gently manipulate Lady Bertram — “Oh, I can’t accept him, you’ll miss me too much!” But Lady Bertram has a sudden attack of almost unselfishness.

Everingham, Henry’s love, and a pug puppy? Fanny, think of what you’re giving up!

Chapter 34

Oh, Edmund. Just like you keep hoping that things are going to work out with Mary, now you’re hoping that things are going to work out between Henry and Fanny, even though you know Fanny doesn’t like him and you see she’s not encouraging him. But maybe things will all work out! (Kind of like Maria hoping that Something Would Happen to free her of Rushworth. Eventually something does happen, but she doesn’t take the opportunity.)

There’s something magical about the reading scene. But it’s so Henry: he just skips around the book to whatever catches his eye, going for the big speeches without reading the parts of the play that build up to them and make them important. And of course, he’s acting.

And then he’s thought about the liturgy, too, but as another performance. The part where he talks about his aspiration to be a preacher is pretty funny. First he thought (for about ten minutes) that he might like to be a sailor, like William; now he says he’s thought about being a clergyman, like Edmund: the two men dearest to Fanny. But he can’t be like them, because he’s not interested in constancy. And that’s why Fanny’s not interested in him: she knows he’s not constant.

Ugh, Henry. She told you to leave her alone; why won’t you do it? “You have some touches of the angel in you…”  Oh, puh-leeze.

“It is he who sees and worships your merit the strongest, who loves you most devotedly, that has the best right to a return.” Excuse me - a right to a return? And quit with the first name business! She didn’t give you permission.

Hurrah for Baddeley! Tea and cakes to the rescue.

Chapter 35

Sir Thomas “wished [Henry] to be a model of constancy; and fancied the best means of effecting it would be by not trying him too long….” It’s disappointing that Sir Thomas doesn’t seem to realize how self-refuting this is.

...And Edmund lets Fanny down. “Don’t marry him if you don’t like him! But in the end, marry him.” What does that even mean? (I do think that he has a good point that in some respects someone like Henry could be a good match for Fanny in that they could learn from each other.)

But Edmund’s floating around on a pink cloud, surrounded by butterflies and little birds singing sweet songs, because Mary Crawford is being encouraging to him again, and in his infatuation maybe he’s got a happy fancy of love being in the air and his marrying Mary and Henry marrying Fanny and everyone being happy together.

Fanny lets him float around for a while, and then turns the conversation back to the problem with Henry, “feeling it due to herself” — wait, did I read that correctly? YES I DID:

“Feeling it DUE TO HERSELF.”

She brings up her most serious objections — the shenanigans connected with the play… and Edmund tunes her out because he’s embarrassed because of his own failures. And the “It has been _ _ chapters since Edmund seriously lets someone down” counter goes back to zero.

But Fanny presses her point! Back in Chapter 7 she would have questioned herself if she thought differently from Edmund, and hesitated to disagree with him. Now, she’s tactful, but firm. She saw what she saw. And she’s confident in her observations and her judgment.

She also knows that it is NOT her job to improve Henry’s character.

Edmund reports that Mrs. Grant and Mary both 1. know about Henry’s proposal and 2. ship it like the East India Company….

“I should have thought," said Fanny, after a pause of recollection and exertion, "that every woman must have felt the possibility of a man's not being approved, not being loved by some one of her sex at least, let him be ever so generally agreeable. Let him have all the perfections in the world, I think it ought not to be set down as certain that a man must be acceptable to every woman he may happen to like himself….

And another big step for Fanny: “How was I to have an attachment at his service, as soon as it was asked for? His sisters should consider me as well as him.”

“With the kind authority of a privileged guardian….” Some guardian. Fanny’s guarding herself now.

Chapter 36

Mary visits the East room for a chat with Fanny. “[Edmund’s] sturdy spirit to bend as it did! Oh! it was sweet beyond expression.” Sure, that’s not worrisome — that she’s crowing over bending the spirit of someone she thinks she loves.

Comparisons between London and Mansfield: “You all give me a feeling of being able to trust and confide in you….” What Henry said. They feel the attraction of the virtues at Mansfield.

More reflections on love as power, on Fanny’s power over Henry and her victory over the other hopefuls.

And the whole necklace scheme was Henry’s idea!  Another attempt to appeal to Fanny’s gratitude and force a connection.

“[Fanny’s] disposition was peculiarly calculated to value a fond treatment, and from having hitherto known so little of it, she was the more overcome by Miss Crawford's.” If Fanny hadn’t seen what she’d seen, and if her heart was not already fortified by her love for Edmund and William, she could be easy prey for Henry.

1. Okami

i’d die for this game. A solid 10/10. This game is a masterpiece in every way imaginable and any time somebody asks me, “Do you think video games can be considered art?” I show them this game. I played it when I was younger, so it has the faint sense of nostalgia, which is always a bonus. Uhhh I don’t know what else to say other than this game is beautiful and it is one of the few games where I was dreading the ending because I didn’t want the game to end. I wanted to stop playing because I didn’t want the game to end, it was that good.

My biggest dream would be to go to Ryoshima Coast tbh. That place is gorgeous. I remember the first time I went there and purified the area. Hearing the theme and seeing the sheer beauty of Ryoshima Coast appear took my breath away. A while back, I listened to the theme, after not listening to it for a loong while and… yeah, I cried. That’s how beautiful Ryoshima Coast is.

I want to talk more about how much I love this game, but this is long enough, heh. So let’s go to…

Tales of the Abyss

i’d also die for this game and i did. this game killed me. emotionally. I cried over 10 times playing this game? No exaggeration, I counted lmao. Luke’s haircut scene, Ion’s death, Anise crying in the cathedral, Natalia’s little speech to her father, the Meaning of Birth and Tower of Rem scene……………

Tales of the Abyss kicked me in the heart. Hard. Luke fon Fabre is the second most fictional character I relate hardest to. His bratty behaviour and willingness to change, his struggles and his personal issues… They hurt me :so close to home for me and I adore the cast with everything I have. Another video game I didn’t want to end because it was that good.

NieR

Little backstory here: My older sibling and a family friend played this game before me. I remembered very little. There was Gestalt Nier, and a talking book. Nier had a daughter named Yonah, who got kidnapped. There were evil shades. Basic stuff like that. But, what I remembered most, was the music. To be more specific, Hills of Radiant Wind and Kaine Salvation. About a year+ after my sibling finished playing NieR, I suddenly got one of the themes stuck in my head. So, I searched it up on YouTube, listened to it and I was blown away by the beauty. How could a song so beautiful exist????????

I decided to play NieR because of those two themes. They were that beautiful, so beautiful that I had to hear them in-game. Now, this game is brilliant. It steps on your heart and stitches it back together. Then it fucking tears it apart until nothing but bits and pieces remain. Lord the plot twist is so amazingly heart wrenching and this game really taught me that there are two sides to every story.

My (other) sibling watched me play this game, after watching the first sibling I mentioned play it. I hated the shades. That sidequest where you had to find the dog, and found it dead, surrounded by shades? I hated the shades. When I was fighting P-33 and Kalil, I found them annoying. I was having fun killing them, while my sibling was going, “No! Stop! Why are you killing them!” I didn’t understand nor care… until New Game+ rolled around and I felt like the biggest piece of shit. I don’t think another video game can make me feel as guilty as I did there. Hooooo boy NieR made me feel so many emotions.

Kaine was also my role-model growing up. She’s not the best role model (As some people have said to me, “You can’t go a sentence without swearing in it!”) but I admired the way she went through so many hardships in life and still kept living despite that. I also have a tragic backstory™ that bears some similarities to Kaine’s, so this resonated with me. Ahh, Kaine, you deserve the world. I can only hope to be as strong as her one day.

(Bonus: I was already sad when I had to kill Roc. NG+? I started sobbing like a little bitch thanks to the new scenes. “What did we do to deserve such a fate?” “Thank you… for being my friend.” HELLO TEARS WELCOME BACK my heart hurts thinking about it)

This game also had me crying during the late hours of the night. It’s a short and sweet “comfort game”, a video game that I tend to play when my mental health plummets. Each and every time, I finish the game (2.5 hours?), I end up feeling so much better afterwards.

I played this game because I heard the theme Everything’s Alright and like NieR, decided that I needed to hear this in-game. It’s so bittersweet :

Cheers, a game I played when I was much younger~! This game was heavy inspiration for a lot of my stories that I now write. It’s a wonderful game; what else is there to say? Graduation Day, Part 2

1. No “Previously On.” Just Buffy on the balcony, bloodied and bruised, knife covered in far, far too little of Faith’s blood. She leaves the knife behind. The Mayor enters the apartment a moment later, searching for Faith. He’s terrified for Faith. “She’ll be all right. She’ll be all right. She’ll be all right.” 2. Last run of this season’s version of the opening song. 3. The gong at the end of the song makes me expect the Undertaker, even though it’s not the Undertaker’s gong. 4. “Tea is soothing. I want to be tense.” 5. Now Cordy has joined Giles and Xander in research mode. Also, she’s wearing a cute hairpiece. 6. Angel is hallucinating. He thinks Willow’s Buffy. 7. “Willow?” 8. He also thought Oz was Buffy. 9. That’s okay, Willow. You get to be happy when bad things are happening. People who are happy today give the rest of us strength to get to tomorrow. 10. The makeup people did a great job on Angel’s wound. 11. “Drink me.” 12. If Angel had just agreed to drink in the first place, they could have had hi drink from her wrist or something and given her more control of it. Instead, he’s now drinking from her neck, and that’s bad. 13. She didn’t get him off, but he got off. Now she needs a hospital. 14. Angel is going to call Giles. He’s going to be in trouble. 15. And now Angel is fighting the Mayor, who is in a blind rage. 17. Angel throwing the Mayor seems to have knocked the Mayor into a substantially less blind rage. But still a massive rage. 18. And now Buffy is in Faith’s apartment. Maybe she’s dreaming… looks like dreaming. 19. “Oh yeah. Miles to go. Little Miss Muffett coming down to the 730.” “You wanna know the deal? Human weakness. Never goes away. Even his.” “Just take what you need. You ready?” 20. Now Buffy is awake and visiting Faith. 21. Buffy is ready. 22. He’s going to do his whole speech before ascending, and Buffy wishes he wouldn’t. 40. “Some people who should be here today, aren’t.” 41. And here we go! Eclipse: start! 42. And now he’s a giant snake. 43. And here come the vampires. 44. Buffy has armed the whole student body. With flamethrowers! 45. Teenagers with flaming arrows vs. vampires. 46. And the vampires are flanked. They’ve got Angel behind them. 47. “This is not orderly. This is not disciplined. You’re on my campus, buddy. When I say I want quiet, I mean…” *chomp* That’s two principals eaten in three years. 48. Harmony got got. Jonathan pounced a vampire. 49. “I took this from Faith. Stuck it in her butt. Just slid in her like she was butter. Want to get it back from me… Dick?” 50. “Well, gosh.” Last words of the Mayor. 51. “It’s pretty much fire bad, tree pretty.” 52. Giles got Buffy’s diploma! Teary eyes again. 53. Now Angel’s off to his spinoff. 54. “Guys, take a moment to deal with this. We survived.” “Hell of a battle.” “Not a battle. High school. We’re taking a moment… and we’re done.” Overall: The best season so far ends with the best season closer so far. The Mayor’s blind rage feeding into Buffy figuring out how to control him, the dream scene with Buffy and Faith, The Mayor’s speech, Snyder being Snyder right to the bitter end (I’ll miss you, Armin Shimmerman!), “Well, Gosh,” the cast being together in full one last time before the show realigns as it leaves being about turning high school moments into horror tropes and enters turning early adulthood moments into horror tropes… it was wonderful, all the way through. The Mayor, I think, is an underrated villain. When I hear people talk about favorite Buffy season villains, the first one listed is always Evil Angel, but I think the Mayor is my favorite so far. His humanity makes him work. His foibles make him work. His charm makes him work. That he can be so very “just folks” while also being this brutal and undeniable evil makes him far more frightening than Angel or the Master was in the seasons before. His love of Faith is a fascinating thing, deserving of a whole essay on its own - the mix of honest, heartfelt, and real affection with the fact that he’s obviously taking advantage of her vulnerability is complex and real. The scariest abusers can be the ones who really care. Then there’s Faith herself. Vulnerable and violent, powerful and fragile, Faith is the perfect character to put into the role she was used for in this season’s story. Joss Whedon is an imperfect feminist - deeply so, at times - and Faith as portrayed in this season is not a feminist character. She is, however, an effective one, garnering sympathy and horror in equal measure. I have many complaints about the way she’s portrayed from a thematic perspective - the use of her sexuality and her apparent attraction to Buffy as a sign of her dark tendencies, yet another instance of “abuse makes you a villain” in a television landscape full of them - but I can’t deny that she’s effective. My fave, as they say, is problematic, but that doesn’t keep her from being a favorite. Thematically, the season holds together relatively well. The themes of grace resonate through it - those who seek it prosper, and, in the end, those who do not suffer or perish. Innocents die, too; they always do, but if you open the door to mercy, you will find it. Faith didn’t. She never repented for her actions during this season. So for her, there has been, thus far, no mercy. Angel did, and there was. Season 3 of Buffy was, on the whole, very good. It had the lowest lows of the series so far, but its highs soared to the clouds. It was an honest joy to watch and to share with people here.
