I'm going to interrupt my normal posting schedule briefly to discuss naming airplanes. Don't worry, I'll post the regularly scheduled Friday review after this, but first I'm going to talk about naming airplanes.

When I say that I don't mean naming types of airplanes. I mean giving the airplanes names. A lot of airlines do it. Back in the day you had your Clipper This, Flagship That, Star of the Whatsit, so on. Lots of airlines name theirs after places. Aer Lingus names theirs after Irish saints. SAS names their Vikings. FedEx Express gives theirs human names, like Gabriel, Richard, JobEdokat, and Meredith.

The year is 2023 at time of writing. Clipper This, Flagship That, and Star of the Whatsit are now all relics of a distant past where a plane ticket cost more than some cars and airports sold life insurance at kiosks. That age is long past. Delta, United, American...all cowards, their airplanes long unnamed. Though the practice is alive and well elsewhere, for some reason it has largely gone dormant in the United States. There are few exceptions, but there are exceptions, and there is one in particular which stands out from the rest. Just one carrier on a mission and their 289 individually named flying machines.

I would like to present you with a curated selection of things which jetBlue has named their airplanes. There are many more - 289, to be specific. Take a look through them all if you care to. But this is a list of my favorites. Just a bit of appreciation for a true titan of aircraft-naming in an era where the art seems all but lost.

In the Swinging Sixties, Ford's promotional photo featured a stylish couple beaming with joy as they prepared to take a ride in the Mach 2, essentially a mid-engined Mustang. This sleek, closed coupe boasted a 289 V8 engine, ZF 4-speed transaxle, and amenities like a radio and heater.

"Wait a minute", you may be thinking, if you're old enough to remember the Sixties, or if you've been reading this blog for awhile. "Wasn't there a mid-engined Mustang before there was any other kind?" Well, yeah, there was a drivable concept car based on the front-drive German Ford Taunus V4 powertrain, the Mustang 1*, but that was in 1962, and the roofless projectile seemed to be aimed mostly at SCCA racers ...

The Mach 2's story began in 1966, when Ford's Total Performance program aimed to infuse the GT40's mid-engined glamour into a production car. A Mustang convertible chassis was transformed into a concept chassis by Kar Kraft, incorporating Mustang front suspension, front disc brakes, and Galaxy rear drums. The independent rear suspension was borrowed from engineer Klaus Arning's patented multi-link design for Mustang 1.

Two running prototypes were built, with fiberglass bodies styled by Gene Bordinat's team. The first, a white car intended as an SCCA-ready weekend racer, suffered from chassis flex, while the second, a red example, had a reinforced chassis. The red Mach 2 was showcased at auto shows and featured in car magazines.

With a 107-inch wheelbase, similar to the new Corvette C8, and a weight of around 2,600 pounds, the Mach 2's performance was lively. Ford envisioned pricing it around $7,500, slightly above the Shelby AC 427 Cobra.

However, the Mach 2 program was ultimately scrapped. Ford's success with the Mustang and Shelby's modified versions meant that the Mach 2 was relegated to the sidelines. The white test car was crushed, and the red prototype was returned to Kar Kraft, disappearing from public view.

Rumors of the red Mach 2's fate have persisted, with some speculating that it may still be hidden away, waiting to be rediscovered. The possibility of finding this forgotten prototype has captivated car enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into an alternate history of American automotive innovation.

The 1967 Ford Mach 2 was a mid-engine sports car concept that was never mass produced. It was a two-seater with a GT style, low-sloping hood and front fenders, with a body made of fiberglass. Ford built the first one which was based on a shortened version of the 1966 Mustang convertible floor pan. Two more were built by Kar Kraft based on 1967 Mustangs and powered by a 289ci high performance engine mounted in the middle of the car. It had a five-speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension, and adjustable pedals derived from the 1962 Mustang-I.

Two fully functional prototypes were built:

• Red prototype: The production car candidate, with a revised engine cradle, adjustable Koni shocks, and a redesigned front end

•White prototype: A development mule for racing, with a modified 289, competition-spec components, and a lighter fiberglass body.

The Mach 2 was extensively tested, but the results were not encouraging. The road car handled well, but generated too much body roll at high speeds. The race car's chassis was not stiff enough, distorting under heavy loads. By the fall of 1967, Ford's designers had shifted their focus to the Mach 2A, and the three Mach 2 prototypes were left with Kar Kraft for disposal.

It's not likely to ever get elucidated upon, but I'd LOVE to see how it is Gavial and Doctor forged their friendship. By the time of the first Gavial event, they're already objectively close friends, I want to know how it happened, how did One Punch Man - Gator Woman Edition and Sickly Bag Of Bones In A Hoodie become bros, I want to know the story!!!!!

Q : Where do you feel better: in the seat of La Boîte A Questions or in the seat of your F1?

Esteban : I think there we should put a little more foam on the back of the seat, there and probably raise the legs a little bit, like that. like that, yeah with a little steering wheel to hold on to. And I think we could do the interview like that.

Q : How are you feeling today ?

Esteban : It's crazy to be in La Boîte A Questions ! It's something I've been watching for a long time now, so I'm so happy to be here today !

Q : 3 reasons to follow the 2025 Formula 1 season ?

Esteban : The first is that there are a lot of drivers who change teams. The second is that I am also changing teams. I will drive with Haas F1 Team. And normally it should be the closest Formula 1 season in history [in terms of points]. We keep our fingers crossed that this is the case !

Q : Your first emotional memory with a steering wheel ?

Esteban : It's the first one when I was about 4 and a half, I got in a little go-kart for the first time. I jumped in and the people who were running the go-kart couldn't stop me anymore actually. And I was dodging them like they were cones. It must have been my dad who had to come onto the track to stop me. So yeah that's my first memory.

Q : Did you get your license first time ?

Esteban : I got it first time. I was already testing in Formula 1 at the time but the examiner didn't know and he told me: "you've been the best for a while", so little proud of me !

Q : What is it like to work with Laura Müller, the first female track engineer in F1 ?

Esteban : It's great ! Laura is super motivated. We're getting to know each other of course. She'll be my eagle eyes outside, she'll be able to guide me on the radio. And yeah I can't wait to start the season and she can't wait too so yeah, we're super motivated !

Q : How does it feel to be the tallest driver on the track ?

Esteban : It wasn't always the best thing to be 1m88 in a single-seater. I didn't fit in many single-seaters at the time and now we're lucky to have rules in place so that single-seaters are longer than before.

Q : What is the fastest speed you have ever reached ?

Esteban : It must have been in Mexico and I think it was 375km/h or 377km/h.

Q : In 2023, we asked Depielo [a YouTuber and friend of Esteban] this : How was it to lift your trophy with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon ?

Depielo answer : Heavy ! It was way too heavy ! What a crazy idea to make a 28 kilo cup. On the other hand, doing this with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon is priceless !

Q : What memories do you have of Squeezie's GP Explorer 2 ?

Esteban : Crazy memory actually ! I think what Squeezie managed to organise was something we never thought possible, it was something motorsport never thought possible in the past. It was a crazy atmosphere like I've never seen to be honest, even in F1 races. It's just an explosive atmosphere and I hope there will be many more.

Q : Your favorite helmet to wear?

Esteban : This was the first helmet my dad made for me. He painted it, it was a replica of Michael Schumacher's helmet. I think it's the helmet that has the most sentimental value actually.

Q : Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, what did you think ?

Esteban : Great image actually ! And I was lucky to be at the same place on the same day because I was also at the simulator at Ferrari. So there was a crazy atmosphere, people were like crazy. And it's just wonderful to see that there is so much passion for Ferrari, for F1 in the world of course and that it's growing all the time ! And it's clear that having the greatest driver of our generation in the most successful team is just crazy. So yeah, I can't wait to be able to fight on the track with him, that's for sure.

Q : The best song to listen to on a car ride ?

Esteban : I listen to a lot of Polak, yeah PLK. It's the best !

Well, another day another crackpot theory. Here we go - for second to last day!

So we all know that one way or another Mello definitely tricked Takada's bodyguard into entrusting him with Takada during the events that turned out to be kidnapping, but I'm wondering if he may have gone a step further-- like he may have actually infiltrated their organization and gotten an actual job with them?? 

...I am aware how out there this sounds but hear me out. 

Supporting evidence:

Let me begin with just a contextual note about how out of touch Halle Lidner was with the SPK during the events in Japan. In chapter 92 Rester mentions they (Near and the others) can't contact her directly because her phone is being monitored, and that she wasn't told the SPK's Tokyo location with the reasoning it would prevent her from being controlled to act against them. Makes sense. So anytime we see her in the scenes with Near (which happens rarely) she has to sneak away from her job and essentially join their Zoom call. After the awkward dinner where Misa and Takada fight Halle doesn't get in touch with them until 4 days later because she 'never gets time to herself'. 

It's not surprising that her job is demanding, given how high profile it is and how seriously Takada's security is taken - as Rester said, it's almost impossible to get close to her, and with her practically impenetrable layers of ultra aggressive bodyguards she's better guarded than the American President.

It's interesting given these circumstances that she seems to remain regularly in touch with Mello. During the silent scenes in chapter 97 there's a very interesting section that shows:

1)  Takada's fleet of guard vehicles, and prominently at the front of which is a large two-seater motorcycle.

2) Mello observing Halle and Takada from afar, in fact it seems the location the binoculars are watching from is located in a room INSIDE the NHN building, the headquarters of where Takada works.

3) a panel where Halle's shown on the phone (presumably given the context) with Mello telling him the details of Takada's schedule/planner book. Meanwhile Takada is sitting a few feet away and distractedly talking to someone else. This is interesting because we know, as Rester said, Halle's phone records are monitored. So here either she's very brazenly using a different unauthorized phone right in front of her employer and the other guards, or she's on her work phone calling an "approved" number. On the other hand it wouldn't necessarily be weird for her to be providing Takada's calendar details and movements to other members of her guard so they can coordinate schedules.

4) The last panels in this short series, shows a non-descript apartment building and Halle on the phone again - this time showing, as we will come to realize in the chapter 104 flashback, the final conversation between her and Mello - the one where she tells him Near's planning to end the case, and he replies "I have no choice but to do this."

Ok now skipping to Chapter 98, Mello and Matt's heist.

So January 26th the scene starts out with a shot of Takada's guard fleet, again the motorcycle prominently at the front.

As Takada's steps out of her car outside the NHN building, Matt blows in with his smokebomb gun causing a huge commotion. As the bodyguards are about to usher her inside, suddenly Mello is there on the same type of motorcycle we saw riding with her fleet in the earlier panels. He says it's too dangerous to stick around the area and to go with him. Halle recognizes him and agrees and encourages Takada to get on the motorbike. She also tells the rest of the team "A" to escort the bike and team "B" to go after the car. It's very unclear in canon just how much Halle knew about this plan beforehand (if anything even), but it is somewhat surprising to me how immediately she decided to go along with him, despite knowing that whatever he had in store for Takada it wasn't truly to help her, and that by giving Takada to Mello this would probably ruin Near's plan. Though again how much she even knew about the details of Near's plan is also unknown - I don't think she knows everything given she is being intentionally kept at arms length from them so that she can't be controlled by Kira against them.

I also think it's interesting that the army of highly trained and very serious guards would allow some unknown person to get so close to begin with - even if he's sort of disguised (but not really because his face is visible through the helmet's visor) and has the same style bike, you would think they'd still be able to tell a stranger from one of their own? Like when Mello calls out offering to take her away to safety none of the bodyguards seem put off by him being there. And don't seem to have raised flags about there being a bike that's not part of their typical cohort being among them. Though their defenses being down (counterintuitively - they were focused on the wrong thing) absolutely might just be tied in to the overall confusion and chaos at the scene though. 

So Takada gets on the bike, then they (Mello + Takada plus her guards' cars) start driving away in formation together and everyone seems satisfied. And once they are away from the scene, instructions come from one of the guards who says "Ok she's safe now. Get Lady Takada into car 7"......so this is interesting because, 

1) he is addressing Mello directly...remember Mello is on a motorcyle (which is very loud) and the speaker is in a car....so logic dictates he must be using a radio/speaker system to be able to communicate with the other guards, and he obviously expects the motorcycle to hear the command.

2) Saying "get her into car 7" is in-group specific language that implies Mello should know which car is number 7 and what is the process to "get her into it".  Of course, we don't know that he just *expects* Mello to be connected to their communication system and doesn't realize if he isn't and therefore doesn't hear the order/communication. Nonetheless the guard leader/speaker *thinks* he is.

At this point, when the guards cars think she is safe, Mello suddenly cuts away into a narrow alley and only then do the bodyguards realize she's been kidnapped.

So, basically that concludes my argument for why this theory is...possible? I'm well aware there's a number of issues with it that are unaddressed here, like wouldn't the other guards think it's odd that there's a foreigner amongst them? But interestingly I wonder if her circle of protection is more diverse than one might assume and include Kira-worshippers from around the world? Since Takada's own closest guards are not all Japanese - Halle being the obvious example, the same might be true for the more distant members of her guard complement as well. And Halle, as Takada's most trusted bodyguard may have been able to vouch for him to join the crew, or at least hook him up with equipment intended for insiders-only to be able to penetrate their ranks. With Mello's good social skills and fluency in Japanese it wouldn't be surprising if he could pull it off, especially if Halle helped him.

Another flaw is wouldn't Mello be concerned about Takada herself seeing his face and recognizing him? Since he must assume since the Japanese Task Force members know his face they'd be able to describe him to a sketch artist or something. To this I just propose that Takada has an extremely large staff of security, so there's likely ones just in the background that she doesn't interact with much or at all. And she is rather...how did Near put it - "a wannabe queen" - she probably doesn't take the time to get to know or even notice who the lesser members of her security team are, and it'd probably be easy to avoid being in close proximity to her if one wanted. 

Is it more likely that Mello didn't go that extreme extent and instead just infiltrated the guard in the regular way; by observing them, getting to know their movements via Halle, and then getting the same model of bike to take advantage of the chaotic situation he and Matt created and slip in to whisk away Takada in the confusion? Yes probably. 

But I found these details captivating and love overthinking and cooking up a good weirdo (but defensible within canon material) theory. I'd love anyone else's comments -criticism welcome too, I have a thick skin- on this idea.

“Would you like to go flying?” Nero emerged from the bathroom rubbing a towel through his wet hair. 

Severia looked up at him from where she sat on the edge of the bed brushing her hair. “Flying? Together?”

“Of course together, silly girl,” Nero said with a chuckle. He tossed the towel into a corner, causing Severia to wince, and sat down on the bed behind her. Taking her long, still damp hair in his hands he deftly separated it into three sections and began to fashion it into the braided style she typically wore. 

“I didn’t know you could do that.”

“Braid hair? Child’s play, my dear. There are many things I can do which you have yet to witness.” She handed him a thin strip of leather and he tied off the end of the braid. “For example, my tremendous piloting skills.”

Severia smiled and leaned back against him as he wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on the top of her head. “I don’t think I’ve ever flown just for fun before but I think I would like to go flying with you.” She had a feeling that even such everyday activities might seem entirely different to her now, with him. 

The sun was sinking when they left Rhalgr’s Reach in Severia’s Manacutter and took to the skies. The Manacutter was a one seater, but they managed with Severia sitting between Nero’s legs. She let him take the controls.

They cruised out through the western gate, the ruins of Emprise presenting a brief but thrilling  obstacle, before they accelerated and ascended over the Peaks of Gyr Abania with the sunset at their backs. The air was clear and warm as they whipped the wind along in their wake. They had no route or destination in mind. They were free to ride along with the wind anywhere it wanted to take them. 

As the landscape opened up beneath them Severia felt as if she was expanding toward the horizon as well. She had flown countless times in many lands but the world below had never seemed so beautiful to her before or the sky above so uplifting. The dying sun reflected in the clouds gathered on the horizon all around them burning in blazing orange and capped by brilliant blue. Severia did not know if she had ever seen a sight that lifted her spirit so. 

“It’s amazing,” she murmured. So it was true after all that even a familiar sight became something special when it was shared with someone you cared for. As they flew toward Mason’s Falls, she began to mentally compose a list of every thing she wanted to show Nero and share with him. And as she did so, she felt the horizon of her future stretch out before her infinitely.

The engine develops 430 kW (585 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 800 Nm over a wide rev range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes only 3.6 seconds, the top speed is 315 km/h. In the SL 55 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption 12.7-11.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 288-268 g/km), the V8 unit develops an output of 350 kW (476 hp) and a peak torque of 700 Nm. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes 3.9 seconds, the top speed is 295 km/h.

Fucked my friend’s sister after she gave me a ride home

Was in Zurich for work a few weeks joined a dinner party at a friends house. We finished and I was heading out when his sister who’d joined for dinner offered me a ride back to my hotel. It was late and the train would have taken a bit longer so I said sure.

His sister Zoe and I had been chatting on and off and playfully flirting throughout the evening though I hadn’t thought much of it. She’s very cute - late 20s Swiss postdoctoral researcher, 5’10”, athletic build with perky little breasts and short brown curly hair. She was wearing black jeans, a white T-shirt and a green cardigan and sitting next to her in her little 2-seater BMW I couldn’t help but catch a glimpse of her nipples pushing through her top and her cute full lips smiling as we chatted.
