Thinking again (thanks to the dead bird site) about Stede rebooting his worst day ever, aka the traumatic flashback he has multiple times across both season, only this time he gets the acceptance and approval he has craved for his entire life.

The Worst Day Ever is the day his father teaches him to kill, slaughtering a goose and spraying blood all over little Stede's face. He then grabs his son by the arm and drags him out to verbally excoriate him and tell him he is worthless and useless, "a soft-handed, weak-hearted, lily-livered little rich boy".

Faced with the prospect of killing for the first time sends Stede into a panic spiral including that flashback.

It's referenced again throughout the season, but especially in 1x02, loosely in the fever dream in 1x04 (he was scared of geese for Christ's sake!), and 1x09, when Stede is struggling with his guilt, self-recriminations and self-doubts and also being confronted directly by Chauncey.

But the most significant return of the Worst Day Ever flashback is immediately after Stede kills Ned Low, his first real deliberate kill.

Our man is very much Not Okay. The fact that this memory is front and centre shows exactly how much that day - that moment - impacted on him decades on.

He does his usual thing when he's upset - isolates and closes himself away somewhere else, shutting himself down and using the tried and true conceal-don't-feel approach.

The difference this time is that someone comes after him to offer him emotional support, comfort and care (much like Ed did on the beach in 2x09, and this time, more kisses as well). So for a little while at least, Stede is distracted and wrapped up in Ed's affections and can put Ned's death to the back of his mind.

But the trouble arises when they get to the Republic and suddenly, for the first time in his life, he's being praised and celebrated. And, of all the people for him to gravitate towards, he ends up choosing to spend his time in the company of Blood-bucket Bill, an older man in a blood-smeared leather apron, who keeps telling him how cool and amazing he is.

And, after Stede kills in front of him, we get another twisted up mirror of the Worst Day Ever. Instead of his dad dragging him out to humiliate him, Bloodbucket Bill grabs him by the arm and hauls him up and tells everyone "the Gentleman Pirate is the fuckin' dude"

And as the episode continues and Ed leaves, Stede retreats to the bar with Bill, trying to take comfort from the man who has been telling him how good he is all day.

"At least you like me for me," he says to the deranged blood-smeared groupie. "Bonnet, I'd fuckin' die for you" Bill tells him and you can see that it isn't bringing the assurance Stede thought it would.

And to ice the cake, even when he's holding onto those last little vestiges of "yay I'm cool", Izzy shows up and dismisses Bill with three words and Bill doesn't even try to stay. "I'll fuckin' die for you" becomes "yes, right away, Mr Hands".

And the framing. omg the framing in the scene. It is, once again, a deliberate and pointed call back to Stede's Worst Day Ever. Once again, an older man is looming over him and Stede is just waiting to have emotional strips ripped out of him again ("have you come for your victory lap?"). This is the first and only time I can think of Izzy looking taller than anyone, especially Stede.

But unlike the horrendous abuse he got from his father, the abuse Stede expects yet again, the same old patterns happening over and over, Izzy changes the script and tells him "I think you're good for him. You balance each other out".

And if not for a group of his crew - his family - choosing to leave him as well, it might have been enough. But when he's already fragile over the loss of one person precious to him and reassured that he's good for people after all, the threat of losing more of his beloved people pushes him straight back into the reckless behaviour that has filled the rest of his day.

love stede's fever dream line up in 1x04. mary, alma, father bonnet, and smoke-head mythological blackbeard is a fun enough image, but when you dig into the fact that "blackbeard" essentially represents the devil in the dream ("enjoy hell"), and that stede hasn't met ed yet -- but he's about to! because ed is waiting when he wakes up, and along with stede's wife, father, and daughter, ed is about to be one of the most important people in stede's life... not the devil, not hell, but the person who shows stede what his life can be, and the one he's going to spend the rest of it with

So I've had this fic ides for Maddie and Wally sat in the back of my mind but I have no time to write anything right now, so here's the 'synopsis' version of the ideas that I do have (can't finish it fully because busy).

The week between 1x04 and 1x05 is excruciatingly long as Maddie and her friends wait for answers regarding Mr. Anderson and Claire to surface. During the wait, in hopes of eliminating the long hours of anxious uncertainty, the Split River Spirit Body sets out to keep Maddie occupied and entertained. Wally is especially determined in this endeavor (no longer having to hide his growing crush on the new ghost at Split River from his two friends (he'd been confronted by Rhonda and Charley as field day came to an end)).

Sunday - A small-scale picnic being hosted in the school's yard draws the attention of the Split River ghosts (as Sundays prove to be the least interesting day of the week). A determined Wally convinces Maddie to join him at the brunch. Exchanges occur, including;

Conversations in which the duo get to know eachother more (smaller things, interests, etc.)

An instance in which Wally gifts Maddie a Gardenia (fully unaware of the flower's meaning (Secret Love))

Maddie having butterflies

An unanticipated rainstorm that cuts the event short and leads Wally to giving Maddie his letterman jacket as a means of staying dry

Bonus points if they have an impromptu dance on the way back to the school.

Monday - Yesterday's storm, although brief, was enough to leave Wally Clark with a ghostly fever. Maddie, Charley and Rhonda watch over him as he rests on a couch within the gym, unsure of how to help him overcome his illness. Charley takes Rhonda to make chicken noodle soup in the cafeteria, leaving Maddie to watch over Wally.

Again, genuine conversations are shared

Wally admits small things he finds nice about Maddie

Maddie reciprocates.

Wally falls asleep and Maddie sits next to the couch. She observes with those same butterflies as she too starts to doze.

Bonus points if she admits anything while he's sleeping and he pretends not to overhear.

Tuesday - Friday - More spirit shenanigans

Saturday - With the weekend approaching once again, it comes time for another Movie Night (a consensus couldn't be reached the day before so Mr. Martin made the decision). Maddie was given choice over which movie to watch. True to her nature, she decided on a horror film. A certain football star agreed with her choice (even after she asked the support group if they wanted to watch something else), refusing to admit that he was less than confident when it came to the genre of film.

Rhonda, Charley, Maddie and Wally are on the pillow pile since they had the couches last week.

Wally, after a jumpscare, ducks beneath a blanket. Maddie joins him and they talk briefly. He admits to his cowardice. She's quick to refute it, and offers him her hand to hold, stating something along the lines of 'We'll be brave together'.

Hi Lemon ❤️!! I have a song ask for you for Nice Ask Week!! 🎵 Lone Star, especially in seasons 1-3, gifted us with so many great songs to go along with scenes! What is your favorite song that Lone Star has used and the accompanying scene with it??

Hi Desi!! Thank you so much for sending me a music ask!! An impossible ask! I honestly think that 9-1-1 OG has the better soundtrack, their use of music is so clever and it always makes me laugh or adds to the emotional experience of whatever is happening in the show. But I do think Lone Star does that to an extent!

If I had to choose one favorite it would be Fever by Elvis playing during the sexytimes scene in 2x12 as the condo starts to burn. That was an inspired choice, and I thought they choreographed everything really well with the song and the boys being passionate and the flames sparking!

Since it’s me, I’ll give you my favorites from every season

Okay, one thing I really did love about the soundtrack in Season One is that they tried to use artists from Austin and a lot of alt country songs. That really helped with establishing authenticity.

Gold on the Ceiling by Black Keys at the end of the police station scene in 1x03. Perfection!!! It really lends to the playful manner that we see is being established in their relationship.

If You Need To, Keep Time on Me by Fleet Foxes in 1x04 while Owen showers. Love this band and this song, and it really lent itself to the scene!

Laura Marling covering A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall (Bob Dylan) when TK & Owen discuss his cancer. Inspiiiiiiired.

Westfall by Okkervil River playing during Judd’s chat with Billy about Owen taking the CPAP. I LOVE Okkervil River so much, and they are indeed from ATX!

Someday by Glorietta !!!!! David Ramirez and Noah Gunderson !!!!!! I saw them play this song live in 2018 !!!!! I swear to you I screamed when I heard this song playing in the background of this scene when I was watching live!!!! David Ramirez is also from ATX !!!! And the song is just so perfect for this moment that Owen and TK are having, and kind of this part of their story arch for the season. Where TK is kind of realizing that Owen isn’t perfect, and coming to terms with some of the ways he’s failed him in the past. (@lonestardust made an amazing gif set with this song and this scene and I need to find it so I can rb it!)

Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie when TK’s a sadboi and Carlos calls Cooper 3x13 Listen, I have seen Death Cab play live about 47 times, and let me tell you, seeing them play that song live will change your life. It will rearrange your brain chemistry. The build up! The emotion!! The absolute devastation!!! Seeing TK listening to that song took me right there and gave me all the goosebumps.

ngl, I love that Stede goes from "You complete arsehole" to "but you've got a head and you should look after it" with Izzy after the double-whammy of Izzy's revelations of how bad things had been and his plea to help him protect the crew.

And likewise, Izzy going from "you prancing prat" to "I just wanted to thank you" when Stede could have had a quick and easy vengeance and let them all die, but he listened to Izzy and understood why they had been forced to kill Ed and saved them anyway.

This isn't out of nowhere either. In 1x04, Izzy had snapped about the loss of life of crew members and Ed had replied "that's their job, they're pirates". Stede's first reaction when he woke from fever-coma was to seek out his crew out of fear they'd been harmed.

Both of them can respect someone who risks their own life and protects their crew, even if they don't necessarily like each other.

(And yup, still salty we don't have the Co-Captains and their First Mate, but I remain deeply, deeply sus about the fact they kept him with them >.> )
