“[While working at the Great American Food and Beverage Company in 1979, Peter and Danny Carey] played one of Michael Nesmith’s songs [together], called ‘The Girl That I Knew Somewhere.’ [Peter] played piano, I knew the guitar parts, and he and I sang it together, and we were really rocked it down, we knocked it out of the park. It was a lot of fun. I worked with him just before I joined [a band]. And he was very happy for me that I got a record deal. (laughs) Something that stands out in my mind is that I remember that DJ [Barker] was promoting some kind of get rich quick scheme, and it irritated Peter to no end and he got really vocal about it… all I remember Peter telling him is that it was a pyramid scheme, ‘It’s nothing but a f***ing pyramid scheme, you should be ashamed of yourself for promoting that.’ He was taking DJ to task on that. I just had fun with him. He could play the shit out of the banjo, and he was a really good piano [player], and he was a smart guitar player, too.” - Danny Carey, Tales of the Road Warriors, 2019
“I remember [Peter] whipping out that banjo in the piano room [at the Great American Food and Beverage Company] and duck walking like Chuck Berry, and, like, he really had it down, he was exceptional. […] He was a consummate musician.” - Hal Aaron Cohen, ibid
“My mom [k]new and worked with Peter [T]ork at the [G]reat American [F]ood and [B]everage Co. on Wilshire [B]lvd in Santa Monica during the early 80s. Nice guy.” - Kent V., Vintage Los Angeles FB comment, 2013
“Before performing in Vicksburg, Tork and the band played in spots in Denver and Houston, where he rated the response as ‘pretty good.’ ‘It’s still a trial run at this point,’ he said of the road tour. ‘I think the guys sound tight, but there’s still lots wrong with it. We really came out underprepared.’ [...] In the midst of the applause, however, a few voices could be heard mocking the lyrics of the songs. The jeers didn’t go unnoticed by the performer. ‘Tonight, there was one guy here who obviously wasn’t enjoying himself — and he was letting everyone know it at the top of his lungs,’ Tork reflected backstage. ‘I tried to ignore him and listen to the applause, but somehow, my attention kept drifting back to him.’ […] [Should music fail] he’s even considered going back to school to pursue a career in law. At the moment, however, his thoughts are directed toward developing his style as a musician on stage. He says that performing for smaller crowds than he did a decade ago is the least of his worries — although he finds it hard to put the rude behavior of the heckler out of his mind. ‘But,’ he added with a sigh, ‘I guess that’s just part of the trip.’“ - The Clarion Ledger, November 1, 1979

THE HOGWARTS CLASS OF 1978 - pt 20
JAMES POTTER
Name - James Potter
Blood status - Purebloood
Date of birth - 27th March 1960
House - Gryffindor
Academic achievements - Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Quidditch captain, Headboy
He was killed by Voldemort trying to protect his wife and son after they were betrayed by their secret keeper
Cannon
Both of his parents were elderly even by wizarding standards
Having been conceived so late in his parents lives, he was raised in a doting household with little material limits and pampered a great deal. Hence, it was no surprise that he's grew to be proud. arrogant and boastful but deep down still a good person
At some point during his school years, James took a photo of Hogwarts Castle at sunset and gave it to Remus
At the age of sixteen James' parents allowed Sirius to move in with them so he could escape his family
Both of James' parents attended his and Lilys wedding
In around 1977 he and Sirius were involved in a motorbike chase with two Muggle policemen. Although the chase started off as a bit of fun, it turned more serious when the pair were attacked by three men on broomsticks
He and Lily defied Voldemort three time
At some point between 1979 and 1980 James' parents died of Dragon Pox and he inherited the cast Potter family fortune from them which enabled him to comfortably support his family without the need for a paying job
James also used his wealth to support a Remus who was en employed due to his status as a werewolf
Headcanons
Pansexual
Growing up, whenever his parents had to go to work or out with their friends they would drop them off at the ice cream shop where Florean Fortescue would watch him for the day as he also took care of Alice. Barty Crouch Jrs parents also did the same
Usually, when they were really young theyd only just sit in a booth together and colour and play hide and seek in the shop (which theyd always get in trouble for) and as they got older theyd be allowed to go around Diagon Alley but only if they stuck together and would stick to the village only. (And theyd have like everyone there keeping an eye on them because Alices father is well known and liked so nobody would let anything bad happen to them anyways.)
* Alice goes to Hogwarts first and when she comes back she is telling stories upon stories about school to the point where James and Barty would tease her about always talking about Hogwarts and nothing else.
* James goes next and gets sorted into Gryffindor along with Alice. While at Hogwarts Alice watched James like a hawk for his first few weeks, she really was the older sister he never had and she was so excited to share Hogwarts with him. She gave him a tour and told him everything about everyone and wanted to know all of his thoughts
* When Barty joined he was sorted into Slytherin and made it his mission to get James and Alice to leave him alone. He wanted to fit in and he had no trouble in doing so. He made sure that he acted his worse around James and Alice and no matter how hard they tried they weren't getting him to change
* Alice gave up on Barty before James did
* James became friends with Dorcas Meadows when they were in their fourth year during a game of seven minuets in heaven
* James had wanted to befriend Dorcas for a while, mostly because she was Remus’ step sister and James thought they would get on most
* Dorcas was hesitant to be his friend at first because of not only the history and common knowledge f James hating all Slytherins but just because she didnt think they would be good friends, but she did accepted his hand of friendship
* That night they came up with three ruled for their friendship also 1) No house slander off of the Quidditch pitch 2) No telling on each other to Remus and 3) Only say "I love you" if its for a dramatic goodbye
* Since that day James and Dorcas began to build a bond. One that went further than house colours and rivalry. From the friendly nods that they gave each other in the corridor to the countless times that Slughorn now had to call them out for talking too much. Something had sparked between the two that only grew into a friendship that neither of them could ever deny
While Lily and James were in hiding James got a letter from Dorcas which she sighed off with "I love you" James knew what it meant but couldn't do anything since he was in hiding
He was a little bit pissed off that he didn't make Prefect in his year since he thought he had it in the bag. He started working more in his academics after that and improved so much that he became Head Boy
While Quidditch captain he chose who was on the team based on his friends. He told everyone that every position was up for grabs but there was no universe where he wasn't having Sirius, Alice, Frank and Mary on the team
Everyone was his friend but he was not everyone's friend. There was only a few people who James truly cared about
Those people were Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans, Mary MacDonald, Alice Fortescue, and Frank Longbottom
His first crush was Patricia Rakepick who was in her fifth year when his was in his first
He secretly dated Regulus Black during his fifth year and Regulus' fourth. The only people who knew was Sirius, Alice and Pandora Ollivander. James and Regulus had an agreement that James could tell Sirius if Regulus could tell Pandora. Alice found out about them after walking in on them kissing
Regulus started ignoring James after Sirius ran away because he was mad at James for letting Sirius stay with him. James attempted to get Regulus to talk to him but gave up completely when rumors that Regulus had joined the Death Eaters started going around the school
He and Lily got together during the summer before their seventh year
When James and Lily got married they went all out. They had a wedding weekend in the country side and has a massive reception that everyone they knew was invited to

Going through my cookbooks and I forgot I owned this one. Definitely a thrift store find.
1979 Community cookbook from the Madison Symphony Orchestra League, organized like a piece of music
With microwave instructions on many of the recipes, cuz that was a cool new thing
And they very prominently credit all of the artists.
I suspect I picked this up because it had a whole chapter of beverages. There was a period of my life when I was always looking for new alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktail recipes. And this one starts off with a banger:
Atholl Brose
Scottish
3 T. (heaping) oatmeal
1 pt. water
2 T. honey
3 pts. Scotch whisky (sic)
1 large silver spoon
Mix oatmeal and water to a thick paste. Let stand for ½ hr, then force through a fine strainer, using a spoon. Discard oatmeal. Blend remaining liquid with honey, stirring until smooth with a silver spoon. Pour into a qt. bottle with a tightly fitting cap, and fill with whisky. Shake well before serving in small glasses. This heirloom recipe was made famous in 1475 when the Duke of Atholl captured his great enemy, the Earl of Ross, by filling the well, at which Ross was known to drink, with this libation.

Who Was Joe Fanelli? Pt. 2
Relationship With Freddie
This is where we start to enter speculation territory, as there isn’t more information readily available (at least that I’ve found through doing research) on the specific start and end dates of Joe and Freddie’s relationship.
Queen played a show in Boston, Massachusetts on November 13, 1978 as part of their Jazz 1978 Tour, followed by a show in Providence, Rhode Island on November 14, and then two shows in New York City on November 16 and 17. It’s not unreasonable to believe that Freddie might have met Joe around this time.
There is photo documentation showing that Joe was with Freddie at Queen’s March 1, 1979 show in Paris, France and in Japan (show dates ranging from April 13 through May 6) as part of their Live Killers Tour of Europe.
Their relationship ended certainly before November of 1979 as Peter Freestone began his employment with Queen at this time, and in his second book written in collaboration with David Evans (published 2003), Peter says the following:
I had heard of Joe Fanelli before I actually met him. He had been spoken of by the band, Freddie and their friends when I started working for Queen in 1979. The impression I received of him was that of an American, small-town country boy who had become caught up in Freddie’s whirlwind. Freddie preferred to find a ‘clean slate’ as far as material for relationships was concerned and then to imprint his own stamp on them. From what I gather, Joe had not been able to cope with all the pressures unintentionally put upon him by the process of being ‘imprinted.’ He had walked out of Freddie’s house and their relationship but not from Freddie’s life because Freddie had taken it upon himself to guarantee the conditions for Joe’s alien residency in England. (Freestone, pg. 48-49)
Due to the pressure of having to hide their relationship from the public eye—in a lifestyle of fame that provides little to no respite from being perceived publicly—and having to keep up with said famous lifestyle, Joe did develop a heavy drinking habit. This possibly contributed to their relationship’s end, as Joe did achieve sobriety after he and Freddie separated.
The story of their breakup is further corroborated by (less than reliable when it comes to Queen history and timelines) David Minns, in his book written in collaboration with David Evans.
David Minns—Freddie’s first boyfriend, with whom he cheated on Mary—was receiving similar treatment and being cheated on by Freddie with Joe. Freddie was bold enough to have them interact at times.
All photos included in This Was The Real Life, courtesy of David Minns. Photo 3 Caption: Freddie, Peter Straker, Mike Allison, Wendy Allison, Joe Fanelli
According to David, “Freddie had decided that he had found a new lover and that the young man, Joe Fanelli, would be moving in with Freddie at his new flat in Stafford Terrace.” Some time after this, David received a phone call from Freddie “seeking solace. Freddie confessed that Joe had flown back to New York and taken money and belongings from Stafford Terrace.”
(Several sources date Freddie moving into Stafford Terrace in 1976, and as previously stated, please keep in mind that David Minns’ recounting of the timeline of events is questionable.)
If David is to be believed, at some point after this, Joe returned to England and continued to live and work in London after Freddie had originally moved him there in 1978.
Freddie and Joe reconnected in 1983 for Freddie’s thirty-seventh birthday celebration hosted in Los Angeles, California. According to Peter Freestone in his first book in collaboration with David Evans (published 1998), Peter writes:
Freddie wanted Joe Fanelli to cook for the party and Joe duly arrived from London. The occasion marked the rapprochement between Freddie and Joe who had been working independently as a chef in several London restaurants including September’s in Fulham Road since the break-up of their relationship. (Freestone, pg. 90)
Joe would later be employed full-time and move into Garden Lodge in 1985.

Studio Ghibli Watch-Through pt.1
At the beginning of the year I started watching the Studio Ghibli films in order of release just like I did with the animated theatrical Disney movies. However unlike those, my mom said that she didn’t want to join in watching them since she’s not a fan of anime however I did make her watch a few of the movies that are important. There’s roughly 25 films on this list so I’ll do 3 at a time.
1. Lupin the III: Castle of Cagliostro (1979)
9.5/10
I know that technically this wasn’t done by Ghibli but it was one of Miyazaki’s earliest movies so I’m counting it for now. Plus how else would I be able to mention this movie? Do a “Watch Every Lupin the III movie in chronological order” list too? That’d be crazy. Anyways, if you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it, especially if you haven’t seen any Lupin stuff, it’s a decent start.
2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
9/10
I finally saw this one after years of wanting to see it. Luckily they had it at a store I went too during Free Comic Book Day and it was totally worth it.
3. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)
9.5/10
You can def see a lot of the character troupes that Miyazaki likes to use in this one and that’s great to see one of the origins of them.
Next time will be Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service

Performing in Houston on October 27, 1979; photo via RockinHouston dot com.
“The Great American Food and Beverage Company is an institution in [Santa Monica, Calif.]. […] A waiter in his ‘30s, older than the others, made his way to the podium, banjo in hand. He seemed strangely familiar in an unusual outfit whose suspenders gave him a whimsical air. He was very thin, with an angular, almost bony face and straight, mid-ear length dirty blond hair that was parted in the middle. That was all fine. But he also had a mustache and bags under his eyes that somehow didn’t seem quite right. […] Then came the memory of who he was. His name was Peter Tork, and more than a decade ago he was one of the four Monkees […]. And now Tork was a singing waiter. I assumed that few would recognize him — and that he’d probably rather not be recognized. So I decided to respect his privacy. But then, on the way out, he overheard me mention to someone that I was a writer visiting California to do some celebrity interviews, and he said to me, just a trace of bitterness in his voice, ‘Hey, how’d you like to do a story on a former great?’ Peter Tork now lives with his wife and two small children in Venice, Calif., […]. His home is a ramshackle duplex with badly chipped white paint on the outside and a gate that’s locked by a clothes hanger. Inside, the apartment has second-hand furniture with wobbly legs and sports bare wood floors of the kind it’s not fashionable to leave uncovered. An old sheepdog with a very doggy smell lies under an even older piano. In 1965, Peter Tork was washing dishes in Huntingon Beach, Calif., for $50 a week when he was recommend for the Monkees by a musician friend named Stephen Stills […|. ‘In those days we were both folksingers, and we were known as the two cats who looked alike,’ Tork said. ‘He turned me on to the situation.’ […] Today Peter Tork is 36. In his three years as a Monkee, he guesses he made a million dollars. Except for a trust he can’t touch until 1985, it’s all gone. ‘It just poured through,’ he recalled, without being at all maudlin. ‘It was like a tidal wave after a drought. The amount was so grotesque that I didn’t know what to do with it. I spent hundred-dollar bills like quarters.’ He calls himself a socialist now and says he’d be ‘philosophically and religiously prone to give that kind of money away anyway. But I dribbled it away.’ And that bothers him. ‘
I lived in Studio City in a big house that cost too much. I didn’t know how good I had it. I had no basis of comparison. I never got competent professional advice (from his producers, on how to invest his money). I’m bitter about that. They didn’t know how to handle a flash rather than someone who’d clawed his way to the top. Now I’ve been on the fringes. Now I know what it’s like to claw.’ Among other things, the fringes found him busted for alleged dope dealing. ‘It was ‘72. I was caught coming across the border from Mexico with some hash in my pocket,’ he said. ‘For a while, they thought they’d get me for a big smuggling rap. I ended up spending just three-and-a-half months in custody. I recommend it to all my good friends.’ After that experience, he worked for three years as a teacher. Then the school closed in the midst of a strange embezzlement scandal. So Tork decided to take another stab at show business. He has reactivated some old contacts and recently tried out at Paramount for comedy spots on ‘Happy Days,’ ‘Laverne and Shirley’ and ‘Mork and Mindy.’ ‘
I’m trying comedy because I know I’m glib, and I know I’m good at it,’ he said. ‘And I’m taking acting lessons. I’ll be glib one day in drama too. ‘Maybe first I can get a walk-on, then some solid comedic roles, then maybe in time a feature role in another series, then films, then maybe I can make enough to finance my music, which is really what I want to do,’ he said, the bounds of his quite sincere fantasy mushrooming in a minute. […] In the meantime, while he waits for a casting call, his show-business career still consists of The Great American Food and Beverage Company, where he has worked since last summer. ‘It’s something to do with my hands while I’m waiting,’ he said. ‘It’s a place where you’re allowed to sing, and everybody uses it to keep their chin up while waiting for their big break — like “The Gong Show” or something.’ A touch of bitterness there, again. ‘It’s just that the people don’t shut up (at the restaurant). I wish they would. You basically have to drown them out. But… it is a chance.’ With that, Peter Tork picked himself up to go to work. It was his turn to wash dishes.” - article by Steve Sonsky, The Miami Herald, February 18, 1979
“Well, what I thought was great was that [Peter] always seemed to be humble and very, very gracious in his actions and his attitude. He always treated everybody with respect. He stayed low-key until we would kick up with a group number and then he would join in. […] Everybody else has been joking about how he wasn’t Pete, he was Peter. You can tell a lot about a person when they do whatever they need to do for their family. And the only thing else that I would add is that the fact that he stayed so humble and so gracious after a lot of us had grown up with him as an icon means a lot.” - D J Barker, Tales of the Road Warriors, 2019 (x)
“I worked with Peter in the mid seventies. A kinder, gentler, gracious and giving human being you could never find. His sense of humor and positivity was a gift to all of those lucky enough to be around him. He loved his life, (in spite of it sometimes!)[.]” - D J Barker, Facebook, February 13, 2023 (x)
“There was a period where I was broke. And I called home, I said, ‘Send money.’ ‘No, sorry, kiddo, you’re on your own.’ So there was a restaurant, a two-restaurant chain, there were two restaurants — a short chain, a very small chain, two links — in L.A. called The Great American Food and Beverage Company. And the trick to this establishment was that you had to be a musician, you had to audition to work at this restaurant. And I really, really, really, really, really didn’t want to work there, but I really, really, really needed the money. Anyway, so I’m standing in the kitchen, it’s my first day, and I’m dressed in this ridiculous outfit, and a bunch of us are lined up. And the coked up manager was marching up and down in front of us like a drill sergeant. And as we’re standing there listening to this madman, the kitchen door swings open, and who should walk in but none other than Peter Tork from The Monkees. And I watch Peter Tork walk by me, take a time card and punch in the time clock and get in line right next to me. And my mouth dropped open. And it became evident at that point that he was working as a waiter at the restaurant. And this is Peter Tork from the fucking Monkees. This man was, you know, as big, if not bigger, than The Beatles in the U.S. at one point in his career. And I watched my whole life pass before my eyes.” - Matthew Wilder, Speaking of Music with Jason Faber

Funkadelic: “Not Just Knee Deep” Pts. I & II German 7″ (1979)
Right then and there it’s the father of De La Soul’s “Me Myself And I” (1989) where Posdnuos, Trugoy, Maseo and (ultimately) Prince Paul took plenty of elements from “Not Just Knee Deep” and put that ball into hip-hop’s court. This was one of the many essential pieces of the puzzle that made De La-’s breakout single and 3 Feet High And Rising which helped put Amityville, Long Island on the hip-hop map.
