⋆ band dr intro !
。 — I come home, [he] lifted up [his] wings I guess that this must be the place...
。 — I will find a city, find myself a city to live in...
december 5, 1974.
i moved to new york city in october with the help of my uncle (whom i had been staying with since i graduated from yale in may). it's a small, kinda dingy place, a bachelor on the lower east side, but with how much i was making, it was about as much as i could afford, and i really don't want to end up having to ask my parents for help, as much as they'd probably chip in. i'm taking a gap year (that might end up being two), to figure myself out and decide if i should try to apply for a graduate program, and in the meantime, i've been working at a record store a few blocks from my apartment. like i said, it's not the greatest salary in the world, far from it, but the place is pretty cool and i like the other guy working here, Danny. his parents own the place. people also come in sometimes to post ads on the corkboard near the entrance.
speaking of which, when i came in this morning, Danny pointed out an ad someone had put up looking for a bass player. he knew i played and was looking to be part of a band. that really is the whole reason i was doing the whole "gap year" thing, after all. i want to make this music thing work. it's been my dream since i was a kid. that, and being an author, of course.
so, i wrote down the number on the ad...

。 — Strange but not a stranger...
⋆ david — bandmate / (future) significant other
he's the voice of the band, our lead singer. he can be pretty quiet, even a little awkward at times, but he's incredibly intelligent. there's something about him that captivates me.
⋆ tina — bandmate
ah, tina! sweet, smart, creative. she plays guitar and does some of the backup vocals. she was actually reluctant to be part of the band, but chris convinced her.
⋆ chris — bandmate
chris is cool! we get along well enough. he's our drummer and he's also tina's boyfriend. he also has a large record collection that i "borrow" from time to time.
⋆ jerry — bandmate
so, he's not part of the band yet. after the modern lovers broke up earlier this year, he went back to harvard to get his master's. he's cool though, and talented. he can do vocals, play guitar, keyboards, synth.

how do you keep your blog from getting labeled as explicit by tumblr?
Well, in my personal view, it's not really "explicit", is it?
But the real answer is even simpler. And, at the same time, impossibly complex.
The real answer is that I do not know why my tumblr has not been labeled "explicit".
Just as I do not know why certain posts are being forced to have a "Community Label".
Just as I do not know why certain long-standing, well-regarded tumblrs are being terminated, without explanation and, in my opinion, without cause.
The reasons I do not know why these things are happening or not happening are:
Because there is NO transparency in tumblr's processes of enforcing its policies;
There is NO consistency in how these policies are enforced;
There are NO explanations provided when these policies are acted upon;
And there is NO clarity in the processes or in the policies themselves.
Recently, several of my posts have been required to have labels and I cannot, for the life of me, understand why:
A post of Tina Turner onstage wearing a costume that covers her from head to toe;
A post of Marilyn Monroe (from a 1952 photo shoot for LIFE magazine!) where she is wearing a negligee and a pair of huge 1950's panties and nothing is revealed at all;
A post of Jim Brown and Raquel Welch for the 1969 film 100 Rifles; they are embracing, it might be implied that Miss Welch is nude (but nothing but her back can be seen):
A post of Jennifer Aniston where she is nude but all that can be seen are arms and legs;
Several posts of vintage pin up illustrations where there is no nudity at all - the women illustrated are clothed and not engaged in anything provocative.
I have appealed these - some appeals have been granted, others have not, others are still pending. This process is not only unexplained and inconsistent with the "policy", it also takes forever.
So I do not know why my tumblr has not been labeled "explicit". It would not surprise me if it suddenly was. It would also not surprise me, given recent events, if it was suddenly terminated.
My tumblr will be 11 years old this September. It has more than 22,500 posts. It has a lot of followers. It generates over 60,000 notes each month, nearly 5 million since I started it. Whether any of that has any effect, I do not know.
And that not knowing has become a problem for me. I am actively exploring other venues for sharing my 250,000+ image collection.
I do not like the uncertainty here and I do not like what tumblr is becoming.

16 Things You Never Knew About Talking Heads. Article from Making Music, August 1986.
David Byrne was born a Scot. He entered the world in Dunbarton on May 14, 1952. When he was two his father took the family to Canada to pursue his career as an electrical engineer.
Martina Weymouth and Chris Frantz share a military background. Tina's father was in the Navy, Frantz was raised as an army brat in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Byrne eventually chose the Rhode Island School of Design to study (where he met Frantz and Weymouth), principally because he "liked the graffiti".
'Psycho Killer' was written by Byrne in an experimental mood to see if he could pen a song with someone else's style. He was actually following Alice Cooper having just listened to 'Billion Dollar Babies'.
Frantz and Byrne first collaborated in a university band they called The Artistics (frequently dubbed The Autistics because of the high volumes they used). Weymouth was a fan.
One of Byrne's earlier bands had been a duo with friend Mark Kehoe. They called themselves Bizaldi. Byrne played violin and ukelele and they worked on Sinatra songs.
Chris Frantz's first instrument was trumpet. He swapped to trombone when he decided he couldn't supply the required wind power, and converted to drums.
When Tina Weymouth was 12 she used to be a member of Mrs Tuft's English Handbell Ringing Group touring American churches dressed in Elizabethan costumes and playing English folk songs and medieval melodies.
Adrian Belew was invited to join the Heads in early 1981. But they told him he could only play if he didn't use any effects.
Eno first met the band in the spring of 1977 when they were playing on a date with the Ramones during a British tour.
The name "Talking Heads" was taken from a TV guide in May 1975.
Jerry Harrison first rose to fame as a keyboard player for Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers.
Weymouth, Byrne and Frantz moved to New York looking for a bassist to complete their line up, expecting the city to be littered with them. After a depressing lack of success, Weymouth eventually bought a bass.
Lou Reed used to invite the band to his apartment, mainly, it would seem, to spend the first hour of every conversation insulting David Byrne.
Chris Frantz described the making of the "Speaking In Tongues" album as the easiest and most agreeable experience he'd ever had with Talking Heads.
Byrne picked up the phrase 'Burning Down The House' from an audience chant at a Parliament-Funkadelic concert.

Quantum Leap (1989) Re-watch
Season 1, Episode 5 - "How the Tess Was Won"
Ah, yes. The one where Sam somehow is able to go through almost the ENTIRE leap before seeing what he looks like in the mirror.
"She'd have made you a woman, not a cowboy." / "Why can't I be both?" ah, a woman's lib-ish storyline. Bet you anything it was written by Pratt. {credits roll} Huh. I was wrong.
"NO IT'S NOT HOG COLERA!" - I love how concerned he is for this pig.
I love the little musical bit we get whenever 'holograms' are used.
Tattoos: "Tina's got her name in a tattoo. Of course, that wouldn't do you any good because {laugh} it's in a super private part of her anatomy." Fic where Al has his dick tattooed ASAP please. ;-)
"Of course, she always thought you were kinda cute. Sam - you've never seen Tina's tattoo, have you?" May have to put this into the threesome WIP I want to get back to. ;-)
"'56: I'm still a baby. My sister Kate's not even born yet." - still no Tom.
Tina 'cheating' with Gooshie was THIS early?
"Tina's cheating on you?" The look on Al's face before he says, "Can you believe it?" is hilarious!
ooh - old (plain) handlink. And Al smacks it. Huzzah!
"Al: do pigs like milk?" / "Oh, they adore it." How in the HELL would HE know?
"Almost all animals can see me." great way to get around that you can't train animals to 'not see' someone in the scene.
"I think there must be something weird-looking about me, because I seem to intimidate them." / "Maybe it's your clothes." (which is ADR'd) - first dig at Al's outfits.
Sam feels bad about reading his host's diary. Daw.
"That's a cross we all have to bear. Performance under pressure." Al Calavicci, you are amazing.
"First thing my dad taught me about mounting an unknown horse was to look him straight in the eye and show him who's boss. Then, with a good grip on the reins, mount quickly and take a firm seat." Sam Beckett - you watch your mouth! ;-)
"Tina and I met over a poker table in Las Vegas. I had a flush: she had a pair. Oh, what a pair." Al Calavicci, I still love you.
"She took my second favorite organ and stomped it to death with her four-inch spike heels." Love it.
Yay - the first time Al goes on a thesaurus run-on sentence bit!
shirtless and sweaty Scott Bakula - dear sweet crispy walnuts: I have died. Scott Bakula has killed me.
"There's some things that a man can do better than a woman." {beat} "And some things that a woman can do better than a man: like having babies." … welcome to '80s 'feminism'.
It took Tess quite a bit to notice she was sans shirt.
"Do you know where SHE and that jock-strap breath went over the weekend? To Vegas. Can you believe it? OUR Vegas." - could be read that it's Sam and Al as that 'us', slashers! ;-)
… Al abandons Sam to take a call from Tina. That's just wrong in multiple ways.
"This isn't fair, you know. You can't expect me to do this and not get involved. So, if Tess falls in love with Doc, I'd appreciate it if you just leaped me out of here as soon as possible." The first 'capitulating to the heart/libido' for Sam. He falls pretty easily here.
Sam knew he had a crush on his kindergarden teacher and 1st grade teacher - AND knows their names. That Swiss-cheese memory thing sure is particular. ;-)
Sam 'being mad' at Al is so. freakin. adorable!
… his mirror image is supposedly ugly? Which … first - talk about a moral. Second, he's better looking than Dr. Bryant in "Star Crossed".
and this stupid 'kiss with history' - which is not even historically accurate. (per Wikipedia: "Holly made his first appearance on local television in 1952, and the following year he formed the group Buddy and Bob with his friend Bob Montgomery. In 1955, after opening for Elvis Presley as part of the Louisiana Hayride's habit of seeking out local bands to add to the show, Holly decided to pursue a career in music." This takes place in 1956.)
Overall Thoughts: man, this one has NOT aged well. The 'feminism' is bad, even for 1989. And there are plot holes you can drive a TRUCK through.
Even still, it's a sweet story for Sam. And I mean, we DO get shirtless Scott Bakula in exchange for the bad feminism. Does that make it equal? ;-)
The whole 'Al focusing on Tina cheating' is a bit over the top (they really wanted a cliffhanger for that third act, didn't they). I want to say I read a fic where it actually was something else that was project related.
But hey - that scene of Sam getting punched by Tess is used in the title credits, so there's that.

Christa Winsloe's maternal aunts: middle names
Also (accidentally): Happy 205th birthday, Ernst Wilhelm Hermann Scherz (Chris' grandfather) 29.12.1818—?.1888 (69 years old)
Chris (Christa Kate Winsloe, 23.12.1888) was born in the same year when her grandfather died, but 99 per cent, the two relatives hadn't lived at the same time at all.
Continuation of THIS post.
Both of youngest sisters had middle name from their Mother (her first), and the first sister had first name that was girl version of the second name of father's (Wilhelm —> Wilhelmine.) Also, Rosalie the good Aunt was named after her aunt (Mum's sister.)
Actually, there are more relative with middle name Wilhelm or Wilhelmine (2 Wilhelmine.)
Bad aunt Wilhelmine Hedwig could be named after the following relatives: a. her father Ernst Wilhelm Hermann, b. her paternal grandmother Johanna Wilhelmine Emile Scherz (née Koeppen (Köppen?)), c. her father's sister Wilhelmine Marie Luise (b. 1816) AND she's also. . .
. . . most likely, a namesake of bad aunt Luise (Tante Luise) as she's named in the book.
Crazy coincidence (or whatever it is): parents of Chris' maternal grandfather had varistions of the same name, Johann Wilhelm (1792–1853) & Johanna Wilhelmine (unknown dates of life)
Katharina Elisabeth (Chris' Mum) & Rosalie Elisabeth (good aunt). Their middle name is their Mum's (b. ca. 1829) first name (she had one name only?) AND ALSO, the sisters' grandmother was Elisabeth Nernst (née Baath) (exactly the same name as her daughter, the sisters' Mum.)
Here's the proof of why Rosalie was named so (most likely.) Her maternal aunt Rosalie Scherz (1828–1952) She had been living for 23 or 24 years only. Hopefully, the good aunt Rosalie K. had been living at least three times longer.
Grandparents. Elisabeth (circa 1829) & Ernst Wilhelm Hermann (1888) had 10 or 11 years difference. So, their daughter Katharina Elisabeth's (6 of May, 1859) (Käte in the book) difference with Arthur Winsloe (1849, sometime mid-summer, most likely) (no name in the book, but really, Alfred like the first son) is nearly 10 years doesn't seem a lot for a straight marriage. (Arthur's parents i.e. Chris' paternal grandparents had about 15 years in-between, so it's no wonder why little Tina? had interest in older girls and women too as a child, plus attachment to the one and only Mum. (? = hopefully, correct shortening of the name that Chris gave to self after being able to speak.)
A lot more to come in more than one post. (Paternal side of relatives has looong & a little unfinished research as father's family had 13 children in total (10 is correct when it comes to children born in Scotland.)
EDIT: [THE SCREENSHOT ABOUT ERNST] DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO CHILDREN. The Information has some mistakes (not all 5 children, Catharine instead of Katharina, etc. maybe.)
His death date is 6.6.1888, so of course, he and Chris the granddaughter didn't live at the same time at all.

Ingrid Bergman in Europa '51 (Roberto Rossellini, 1952)
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Alexander Knox, Ettore Giannini, Giulietta Masina, Teresa Pellati, Marcella Rovena, Tina Perna, Sandro Franchina. Screenplay: Roberto Rossellini, Sandro De Feo, Mario Pannunzio, Ivo Perilli, Brunello Rondi. Cinematography: Aldo Tonti. Production design: Virgilio Marchi. Film editing: Jolanda Benvenuti. Music: Renzo Rossellini.
The films Roberto Rossellini made during his affair with and marriage to Ingrid Bergman have an everlasting fascination for movie buffs because of their clash of styles: Bergman's Hollywood-style star glamour and Rossellini's gritty, improvisational neo-realism. But they have few real enthusiasts except for critics inclined toward the auteur theory. For many movie-watchers they seem like failed experiments. But Europa '51 seems relatively coherent, tracing the journey of Bergman from grief at the loss of her child to a kind of beatific transcendence, although even a sympathetic critic like James Harvey, in his fine discussion of the Bergman-Rossellini oeuvre in his book Watching Them Be, finds the screenplay "Like a play of ideas without the ideas." I don't think that's entirely fair: It seems to me that Europa '51 is crowded with ideas to the point that it becomes a movie about the failure of ideas -- or rather ideology. Nothing suffices to explain Irene Girard's (Bergman) drive toward saintly service -- she helps a poor family pay for the medical treatment of a child; she befriends a young woman (Giulietta Masina) to the point of filling in for her one day at the woman's job in a horrifying factory; she helps a young hoodlum elude the police; she nurses a dying prostitute -- all of which appalls her husband (Alexander Knox) and her wealthy family. Not religion, not politics, not psychoanalysis serves to explain or justify her actions, at least in the eyes of the church, the state, and the medical establishment. Or, for that matter, in her own eyes. She doesn't know why she becomes a secular saint, and this of course means she winds up in a mental institution -- where she continues to radiate benevolence even toward the tormented inmates. David Thomson, one of the film's admirers, says, "It's a movie that resonates with the deep-seated urge for moral reform after the war." But ultimately it also seems to me to forecast the failure of any attempt at moral reform. It might be instructive to watch this movie in tandem with a slightly later examination of the moral malaise of postwar Europe, La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini, 1960).

María Montez necklace
Here you see two photos of two beautiful ladies wearing the same necklace. This necklace once belonged to the Queen of Technicolor, María Montez, when she passed away, her younger sister Teresita, inherited it (here is pictured in Madrid in 1952 ready to be interviewed in the Spanish national radio), and then Teresita gave the necklace to Tina. Tina is also wearing these earings that belonged to her mum in this polaroid taken by Brigid Berlin in 1970.
It's beautiful to see that Tina and Teresita were in touch although there aren't photos of them together (for now).
Very special thanks to @74paris for sharing this story with me.

Nina Leen (born 1914, died January 1, 1995) was an American photographer born in the Russian Empire. She was a constant contributor to Life Mag. She is remembered above all for her photographs of animals, many published in book form, as well as her portraits. Via Wikipedia
The cover shot of the Feb. 25, 1952, issue of LIFE. The coverline of the issue: “News in Gloves.”
Nina Leen/Life Pictures/Shutterstock
From a story in the August 23, 1943, issue of LIFE about “amateur vs. professional ways of achieving a summer coiffure.”
Tina Myers (later known as Tina Louise, of Gilligan’s Island fame) came out at a New York cotillion in 1953.
Nina Leen’s life, from early on, was one in which travel played a key role a life that, in retrospect, had something of a purposefully nomadic quality. Born in Russia (the date of her birth is unknown, as she adamantly refused to reveal or even discuss her age), Leen grew up in Europe. She studied painting in Berlin before emigrating to the United States in 1939. With her first camera, a Rolleiflex, she honed her photography skills, teaching herself how to take pictures and developing what would become her signature style.

🤓What books did you read in 2023? I’ve seen people say things like “I normally read way more books” and it comes across in a way that I don’t want to come across, so I’m not gonna say that, that’s how great I am.
