Naked Alibi (1954)
"Look, Joe, I like you, but I don't know what's got into you lately. Maybe you're working too hard or something, but you're getting yourself a rough reputation. Now, take a tip: change your tactics, or you're liable to find yourself without a job."

Hamefura LN14 Chapter 1 Part 2 Summary
Tumblr media
I am currently reading Hamefura LN14 and will post summaries after each chapter.
On second thought, there will be 3 parts for Chapter 1 because I couldn't help going into details in some scenes.
Previous Chapters: Chapter 1: The Encounter at the Party: Part 1
Chapter 1: The Encounter at the Party (Part 2)
Keith will make another round of greetings since the queue of people waiting to greet the royals has decreased. He asks Katarina what she will do.
Katarina would like to continue enjoying food, but she knows that greetings are important. While she is hesitating, Keith insists that she is forbidden from overeating even if she stays behind. Katarina is amazed that Keith can guess what she is thinking. Keith also adds that he can't have her go out alone in this big crowd. He leaves her with two choices: either she stays here, or she goes with him to greet people.
Mom Mary and Prince Mary
---
Mary: In that case, will you wait here and talk with us? (To Keith) I will watch her so she won't overeat.
She said the second part like she was telling Keith, "I will look after your child". It was like I would switch guardians. I was an adult woman, though.
Keith: In that case, I'm leaving her to you, Mary.
Mon Keith told Mom Mary this like he was telling her "I guess I'll leave her to you then".
Nicol: Mary, your child seems to be asking for help.
Nicol murmured this.
Huh? Mary's child? When I looked in the direction of Nicol's gaze, there was the youngest prince of Sorcier, Alan.
The royals had split up a bit after the greetings had calmed down. Alan was looking even more tired than earlier, and on top of this, he seemed to be surrounded by aggressive ladies approaching him. There was "Help me, Mary!" written on his face.
Mary looked in his direction. Being a lady, she made an extremely displeased face. So displeased that I could imagine her clicking her tongue if she hadn't been a lady.
Even so, Mary was good at taking care of people and she couldn't leave alone the underling… or rather the child… no, the fiancé she had been looking after for years, so she let out a big sigh.
She said, "I will leave for a while" and gallantly set out to rescue her child Alan.
When he saw Mary, Alan made an expression that said "I'm saved!". Mary stood to protect Alan from the noble ladies and started driving them off.
If it had been a romance novel, this would have been "a prince saving a princess" scene. Of course, the prince would have been Mary and Alan, the princess.
Based on looks alone, Alan was a charming prince and Mary was as pretty as a princess, but in this world, things didn't go like in novels.
-----------------
Towards the Other Princes
Katarina turns her gaze away from Alan and Mary and looks towards the other princes. They are also approached by ladies.
Jeffrey handles the ladies skillfully as he seems used to it.
Ian is distant and rejects the ladies' invitations with a stern face.
Geordo skillfully handles the ladies, like Jeffrey. But there seems to be something wrong with him today.
Katarina wonders why there are so many ladies approaching the princes today. Keith thinks it is because there are many foreigners at the party. Katarina doesn't understand how it is related. Keith explains that many foreigners ignore that the princes are engaged. And depending on the country, they may consider it fine to freely change fiancés. Keith's explanation makes sense to Katarina.
Keith Gets Angry at Katarina
---
Keith: Things are different and complicated in many ways since there are many foreigners, so please be extra careful. Anyway, will you go around greeting people with me or wait here with Lord Nicol and the others?
Keith asked me this again.
Katarina: Hmm~ In that case, I will…
T/N: It wasn't explicitly written but Katarina supposedly says here that she will go see Geordo.
Keith: Just when I thought he wouldn't come our way since he is busy, why are you saying you will go see him yourself…?
Keith inadvertently muttered this.
Katarina: What?
I asked him in response.
Keith: No, nothing… I just thought it would be fine if you didn't go since we were told we didn't need to greet the royals today.
Keith said this with a little dissatisfied face.
Katarina: I know that, but Prince Geordo's expression bothers me a little.
That's right. When I saw Geordo earlier, his expression bothered me.
It would be fine if it appeared he wasn't sick. It was just that Geordo was the type of person who endured things even if he was sick.
Keith: Wasn't he skillfully engaging with people with a smile not so different from usual?
Katarina: Huh? No, he was not. Keith, you're also his childhood friend, so you could tell, right?
After all, Keith had also been with Geordo for nearly 10 years. But Keith fell silent and fixedly stared at me.
Katarina: Eh, what?
When I stared back at him, Keith made for some reason a sulking face, extended his hand towards my cheek, and… pulled its side.
Katarina: Gné? What?!
When I let out a confused voice because of the sudden situation, Keith said…
Keith: It's because you pissed me off so much.
He said this and quickly removed his hand from my cheek.
It didn't hurt at all since he didn't put much strength into it, but I was just surprised
So he pinched me because he was pissed off? And he did with a tiny bit of strength? What was that?
After that, he indeed escorted me, but his eyes wouldn't look my way. I seemed to have completely wrecked his mood.
Keith was always eagerly looking after me and somewhat acted like my mom, so seeing him pouting like that was extremely unusual.
I remembered how adorable Keith was when he just arrived in the Claes family.
He was cute and small like a girl and his cheeks were also squishy. While his soft flaxen hair was now so high up, back then it was below my eyes and could I stroke it as much as I liked.
After thinking about it, now I incredibly wanted to touch his soft hair again. I extended my hand and touched them for the first time in a while.
When I did, his blue eyes opened wide and fixedly looked at me, so…
Katarina: Your pouting was so cute that I unconsciously stroked it like in the olden days.
When I said this while sticking my tongue out, his face became bright red at once.
This was bad, I made him even more furious! Or so I thought, but Keith…
Keith: This oblivious charming…little devil.
Because he just muttered something and didn't pinch my cheek again, I felt relieved.
Then, when we arrived near Geordo and the others,
Keith: Listen, don't do anything like what you did to me earlier to Prince Geordo, understood?
…he told me with a stern face.
Katarina: Huh? What, touching his head?
Keith: …Yes, this.
Katarina: Oh, right. It would indeed be improper to touch the head of a prince in front of many people.
Keith: ……That's right. So don't do it, okay?
Katarina: Okay!
After I gave him a firm reply, Keith sent me off.
----
Alan Can't Handle Mary's Lessons
Katarina heads towards the princes, but on the way, she encounters Alan and Mary.
---
Katarina: Prince Alan, isn't it great that she could safely save you?
Alan: Yes, she saved me with splendid skills.
…he replied.
If it had been the child Alan, he would have probably said, "She didn't save me!" but Alan was very honest now that he had been completely tamed by Mary.
But his savior "Prince Mary" looked a little angry.
Mary: Whenever you face these kinds of ladies, you always are so useless if I don't come in. Please endeavor yourself so you can somehow handle them by yourself.
Alan: …! I know that, but I won't be able to nail it right away!
Mary: In that case, shall we have a ladies' countermeasures lesson again?
Alan: Urgh! Please spare me from that already!
Alan's face twitched.
Katarina: A ladies' countermeasures lesson?
When I asked out of curiosity, Mary answered this.
Mary: Since Prince Alan can hardly dodge the noble ladies approaching him, it is a lesson I thought of to teach him how to do so. It would be great if he could at least apply what I taught him to dodge me when I play a noble lady approaching him, but he can't even do that well.
After Mary angrily said this, Alan shifted his eyes.
Katarina: This sounds like a very useful lesson! Shouldn't you make him take more of it?
When I said this, Alan whispered this to me so Mary wouldn't hear it.
Alan: Hey, don't underestimate Mary's acting skills. Seriously, she completely turns into an aggressive lady approaching me. The real deal.
Katarina: Well, that's Mary after all.
Mary, the perfect lady widely known as the Model Noble Lady and the Belle of High Society. She even had great acting skills.
Katarina: Is it so bad? If she's like the real thing, doesn't that make it a good countermeasure?
After I had said this, Alan opened his eyes wide, turned my face towards Mary, and whispered this to me again.
Alan: Look closely at Mary. With those looks of hers, she seriously approaches me as an aggressive noble lady would. It's not the same force as the noble ladies around here.
After he had said this, I looked at Mary again.
The unequaled beauty who was reputed even in high society. Her prominent parts were prominent and her slender parts were slender, she had such splendid proportions. When I imagined such a beauty seriously approaching me, even I, a woman, felt a little apprehensive about it.
Katarina: …I'm sorry, Prince Alan. It might be an ordeal for me too.
When I whispered this back to Alan, Alan's face lit up, and…
Alan: Right? Right? I knew you would understand.
…he said in a low voice, expressing his joy.
------------
Katarina Tries to Convince Mary to Reconsider her Lessons
Katarina figures she should talk to Mary for Alan's sake.
Katarina tells Mary her lessons might be too strict for Alan.
Mary gives it a little thought but still thinks Alan needs to stop relying on her or he will be troubled in the long run.
Katarina agrees with Mary but she must still convince her to stop her practical lessons for Alan's sake. She hopes she can convince her without telling her the truth.
Katarina suggests to Mary that she leaves practice aside for the time being and teaches Alan using books instead. But Mary doesn't agree: Alan needs to learn fast since ladies are currently approaching him, and it will be faster through practice.
Katarina feels like she won't be able to convince Mary without telling her the truth after all.
Katarina tells Mary that her overflowing charm makes Alan nervous when she seriously approaches him. Alan is flustered now that she went and said it, but she had no choice.
Mary is shocked. She didn't expect Alan to feel nervous with her now after they had been engaged as children.
Katarina feels like Mary never expected it because she probably considered Alan like a pet she had cared for ever since he was little.
But for Katrina and Alan, fellow members of the Zero Romantic Experience Team, being approached by an attractive person seriously was a lot to handle.
Katarina: It is true, but you are so attractive that it cancels that out. Your charm is so powerful that even I, a fellow woman, could get dizzy if you seriously approached me.
Mary blinks her eyes. She asks Katarina to confirm what she has just said. If she seriously approached her, she would make her dizzy?
Katarina confirms it. With her charm, Mary could make any girl dizzy.
Mary is processing what she has heard.
Katarina adds that for this reason, Mary can't be Alan's partner for his practical lesson. Katarina offers to replace her if needed. There shouldn't be any problem with her since she isn't as charming as Mary.
Alan and Mary both refuse in unison.
Alan flusteredly explains to Katarina that with her, it would be even harder for him.
Mary tells Katarina they won't take her time since she is so busy. She also adds that Katarina has plenty of charm herself.
Katarina feels like Alan and Mary teamed up to refuse her offer. It appears they won't ask her to help with the lessons.
Mary tells Katarina she will start by having her niece approach Alan. Alan says she really shouldn't.
Katarina leaves Mary and Alan.
On the Way to See Geordo
Katarina is on her way to see Geordo.
Katarina sees Ian with Selena. Ian tells the women approaching him that he is only interested in his fiancée Selena and that he has no intention to talk to them. Selena blushes after hearing Ian's words. Katarina is glad to see the two of them are still as lovey-dovey as ever.
Katarina sees Jeffrey. He is skillfully entertaining the women approaching him. Katarina wonders where Susanna is. When she looks around, she sees her talking with an old scholar person. Given her sparkling eyes, she is most likely talking about magic. She really appears to have no interest in her fiancé. But Jeffrey doesn't seem to have any intention of compelling her to do anything. The two of them are the same as always.
Katarina Sees Geordo
Katarina has arrived at Geordo's location.
Just like Jeffrey, Geordo is skillfully entertaining the women approaching him. Looking at him, Katarina realizes that Geordo and Jeffrey are similar inside, while Alan and Ian are similar inside (even if Alan is bad at dealing with women).
Katarina goes toward Geordo. Geordo immediately notices her, quickly dodges the ladies approaching him, and comes to her.
Geordo welcomes Katarina with a sweet smile. She feels a little nervous. His sweet smile reminds her of the adult kiss he gave her. It affected her so much she couldn't look at him for a while.
Geordo smoothly escorts her, then turns to the ladies and tells them that he will stop talking with them now that his fiancée has arrived. While smiling, he gives off an aura that won't allow any objection.
Most of the ladies silently accept it, but some strong-willed ones won't step back. One of them tells Geordo that he shouldn't care about his political fiancée. In her country, there is no political marriage and everyone marries their true love.
Katarina thinks to herself that the lady's country sounds like the setting of an otome game. She wonders if an otome game is unfolding there.
Geordo (large smile): Is that so? While there may be some political engagements, I sincerely love Katarina here from the bottom of my heart, so there is no problem.
Hearing this, all the ladies freeze in shock. Katarina can understand their reaction since a charming prince has just told them that he loves her, a villainous-faced woman who doesn't excel in anything.
After thinking about this, Katarina feels her face turning hot. She needs to think about something else. She decides to recall the time her mother saw her entering the manor covered in dirt after working the fields. It works, the heat on her face decreases.
Geordo says goodbye to the ladies and quickly escorts Katarina away before anyone chases them.
Geordo and Katarina Talk in the Resting Room
Geordo and Katarina arrive at the resting room.
Geordo turns towards Katarina and asks her with a serious face what she talked about with Cezar earlier.
Katarina is surprised that Geordo saw Cezar and her talk at the buffet since they were at some distance and Geordo was busy greeting people. Katarina realizes that it was not her imagination when she felt earlier that she made eye contact with Geordo.
Geordo gets impatient. His eyes look anxious.
Katarina tells Geordo that Cezar only asked her about her health, then left to call Keith for her.
Hearing this, Geordo feels relieved. He mutters to himself that he thought Cezar had approached her again. Katarina doesn't think Cezar would approach her but doesn't say anything since Geordo's expression has softened.
Katarina asks Geordo if it was because it felt bothered that he seemed different from usual. Geordo is surprised that Katarina found him different from usual. Katarina explains that he looked tired or sick. Geordo is very surprised: he thought he could act like usual. Katarina reassures him, most people didn't notice and she only could because she had known him for a long time. Their childhood friends probably also noticed.
Katarina has known Geordo for 10 years. Even if Geordo is harder to figure out and better at hiding his bad physical condition compared to when he was a child, she can at least naturally tell when he is pushing himself behind his smiling mask.
Geordo tells Katarina that he thinks she is the only one who can tell. Katarina is about to deny it, but Geordo puts his index finger in front of her lips.
Geordo: Yes, it is. When I am weakened, you always tell me the words I need and come to my side. It is because you are here that I can do my best. That's why I want you to stay by my side forever, Katarina.
Geordo smiles. Katarina is unconsciously fascinated by his face. She has known him for 10 years but she realizes again how handsome his face is.
Then Katarina sees the shape of his lips and it reminds her of the adult kiss. Her face turns hot. Geordo extends his hand to her cheek. His hand is firm, big, and warm…so warm…too warm…? Wait, it's hot!
Geordo Is Sick
Geordo is moving his face close but Katarina quickly puts her hand on his forehead. It is hot. She flusteredly tells Geordo he has a fever. Geordo moves a little away from Katarina and makes a pouting face.
Geordo: I am fine…
Katarina: No, this fever is not "fine" at all! You've been like this during the greetings, haven't you? You knew it and you still pushed yourself!
Geordo: I felt sick a little ago but I've been like this since I woke up in the morning. But if it's only this much, people won't notice and I can manage, so there's no problem.
Katarina is glad that Geordo has recognized that he isn't well, but he stubbornly insists that there's no problem.
Katarina: There's a problem.
Geordo: I won't cause trouble, so it's fine.
Katarina is annoyed by Geordo's stubbornness.
Katarina: No, it's not.
Geordo: I can properly do my work.
Katarina: Geez, it's not about work! You're pushing yourself while you're in such poor shape and that's why I can't help worrying about you!
Geordo: …
Geordo seems to finally understand. Katarina makes Geordo sit on the sofa. She asks him to wait here while she calls someone, and leaves the room.
Katarina Tells Jeffrey About Geordo
Katarina wonders who she should go to regarding Geordo's issue. At that moment, she sees Jeffrey coming from the opposite side of the corridor. Katarina thinks he is the perfect person in this situation and calls out to him.
Katarina explains to Jeffrey that Geordo is sick. Jeffrey is sad that he didn't notice it despite worrying about him working so hard lately. Katarina replies that it couldn't be helped since Geordo is good at hiding his bad physical condition. Hearing this, Jeffrey is first blank, then makes a wide smile. He agrees, but he thinks Geordo will be fine since he has someone who notices it when he isn't well.
Katarina decides she will scold Geordo more next time since he makes his family sad.
Katarina remembers that Jeffrey said that Geordo had been working hard lately. She asks him about it. Jeffrey explains that Geordo has been busy investigating the backgrounds and circumstances of the persons involved in Maria's incidents. Jeffrey has also been investigating them but since he had many other things to do, he had been relying on Geordo, probably too much. In retrospection, he will ask Geordo not to push himself so hard again.
From what Jeffrey said, Katarina realizes Geordo has been investigating Maria's incident all while taking care of his official business, and he even visited her the other day. It is no wonder Geordo collapsed.
Jeffrey tells Katarina he will make Geordo leave the party and rest. Katarina thinks this should be fine.
Jeffrey sends some directives to the servant waiting on him, then tells Katarina they only need to persuade Geordo to rest. He adds with a smile that he's leaving this job to her.
Katarina and Jeffrey Try to Persuade Geordo to Rest
Jeffrey and Katarina enter the resting room.
Seeing them, Geordo is surprised and stands from his chair. Jeffrey tells Geordo he has heard the situation from Katarina and asks him not to push himself so hard. He can rely on his dependable brothers at any time.
Geordo sulks and tells him he isn't so sick.
Katarina walks to Geordo and puts his hand on his forehead. It is still hot.
Katarina: It is still hot. It isn't "fine" at all. You will stop with this tough act.
Katarina puts her hand on Geordo's head.
Katarina: Prince Geordo, your job is now to rest. I won't accept any objection. You must stop being unreasonable and rest properly.
Katarina lightly taps Geordo's head. Since Geordo is putting on a tantrum, Katarina tries to scold him like an older sister.
Geordo: …"unreasonable", that's just…
Geordo is looking like a pouting child.
Jeffrey: That's right. You will stop being unreasonable. Be a good boy and rest.
Jeffrey grabs Geordo by the shoulders and starts dragging him to his room. Before leaving, he tells Katarina to return to the party with his servant. He will return once he has put Geordo to bed.
While Jeffrey is dragging him, Geordo lets out a faint "Thank you very much" towards Katarina. She couldn't see Geordo's face since he was facing downward, but she feels relieved that Geordo doesn't resent her for meddling too much. She tells him "Please rest well and return healthy!"
Katarina Tells Keith About Geordo
Katarina returns to the venue with the servant. As soon as she returns, Keith calls her out.
Keith has been worried since she didn't seem to return. He has been waiting for her near the entrance.
Keith asks her how Geordo is doing. Katarina tells him Geordo is sick and has returned to his room. Keith is surprised that Katarina was right. Katarina tells him that Geordo just keeps pushing himself hard, he's impossible. She has scolded him already but she will scold him some more next time.
Hearing this, Keith starts laughing. Katarina is surprised. Keith explains that Katarina is probably the only one who can be like this with Geordo. He adds that when he imagines Katarina scolding Geordo, it just looks so funny.
Keith starts laughing again.
Katarina tells him that Geordo wasn't dejected, he just listened with a pouting face.
Keith laughs even more. Katarina wonders if it is that funny.

Hamefura Eyes
That’s it, here’s a collection of literally everyone’s EYES. Why did I do this? For fun, and I like the saying “the eyes are the window to the soul” so oddly specific details are available for reference XD pictures are under the cut. Enjoy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite detail is actually is that Alan’s eyes are more blue than his brothers. Taking on a more navy tint compared to the aqua-teal coloring of his brothers (or at least, the green undertone is the least present in him). So, with as blurry of a picture as it is…
Tumblr media
I like to think that Alan’s eyes are the same as his mum, and that king Owen has more greenish blue eyes like the rest of his sons. Hope you enjoyed the ramble and I hope this is useful at some point XD

THE SHERIFF AND GUY OF GISBORNE
uh. try to stay with me for a second. so incest motifs are a huge part of medieval lit. you see it in arthuriana cycles, you see it in romances, it's a whole thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incest and the Medieval Imagination, Elizabeth Archibald
so robin hood. both adaptions and the text itself, tend to get interesting with guy of gisborne. and I will say that while I found the media being discussed in this text absolutely fucking insufferable to watch, the discussion on it was delicious, impeccable, show stopping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mouvance, Greenwood, and Gender in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Brian J Levy and Lesley Coote
and with regards to discussions on the origin text (which I love and adore forever)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horseplay: Robin Hood, Guy of Gisborne, and the Neg(oti)ation of the Bestial, Stuart Kane
we're. getting to the point, I promise. guy of gisborne and the sheriff in my own "adaption" are not cousins, but brothers in law (fucked up brothers in law are my thing over on my other blog. brutus and cassius? I'm there. caligula and lepidus? all over that, baby!) because I'm aiming for an adjacent transgression.
on the topic of adjacent transgressions and guy's comment in this comic about cannibalism: there's an overlap in various genres of literature, predominantly in branches of horror and tragedy: between cannibalism and incest. (additionally! a lot of texts will take on christian subtexts and allusions, so there's a bonus homoerotic cannibalism discussion happening wrt communion that I'll get into in the future) it's about. chomping. the teeth, you know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Managing Monsters, Marina Warner
Tumblr media
Statius and Virgil: The Thebaid and the Reinterpretation of the Aeneid, Randall T. Ganiban
there's a 100% chance I will revise the sheriff's design at some point, but I wanted to draw the flowers exploding out of the spine so bad
AND FINALLY, the neck focus on guy is half due to his fate in his origin tale (beheaded) and half my own invention: I girl-with-a-green-ribboned him. a little narrative necromancy, if you will.

Happy Birthday Sam Roland Heughan, born 30th April 1980 in Balmaclellan, Dumfries and Galloway.
Sam got his name from the Lord of the Rings character Samwise Gamgee. his parents were big fans of the Tolkien books. He attended Kells Primary School in New Galloway before the family moved to Edinburgh when he was 12, he went to James Gillespie’s on the edge of the meadows before finishing his school education at the prestigious Rudolph Steiner School.
After leaving School at 18 Sam worked and travelled before returning to Scotland and enrolling in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, graduating in 2003.
Sam built a solid career in theatre in both Scotland and England starring in productions of Plague Over England, Macbeth, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Amphibians, and King John. He has also been featured in notable indie films, Emulsion, and Heart Of Lightness but of course it is one particular role that has catapulted him into worldwide stardom, that of Jamie Fraser in Outlander.
For those who don’t know Outlander it follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who finds herself hurled back in time to the 1740’s in and around the time when The Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie made the final ill fated attempt to put the Stuarts back on the throne. Sam plays Claire’s “love interest” she is forced to marry. Further series are set in the US in the 1770’s, their remains a strong Scottish presence in the cast, and the show is filmed in studios in Cumbernauld. Sam has won a number of awards for the series.
In the movie To Olivia he played Hollywood star Paul Newman and in the adaptation of the Andy McNab book, SAS: Red Notice, he played SAS soldier Tom Buckingham. Oor birthdat boy also teamed up with fellow Outlander star Graham McTavish Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham. The series follows the pair as they explore their homeland delving into the culture and history of Scotland, in a light-hearted way. The second series of the show aired last year, the reviews were mainly positive. The duo are already looking at a third journey, this time to North America but that will likely involve indulging Heughan's thrill-seeking side - much to his friend's dismay
Sam also appeared in the psychological series The Couple Next Door last year, I am yet to catch this, it has average reviews on IMDB of 5.6 out of ten. Born to be Great the story of Alexander The Great's early life has been completed but is yet to recieve a release date.
According to reports Sam celebrated his birthday in Edinburgh at the weekend while also running his My Peak Challenge which included workouts, outdoor activities and a gala night with dinner and dancing. He posted on Instagram describing the event as a 'unique blend of wellness, camaraderie, celebration and more'. The peakers, as they are known has raised millions for charities including Marie Curie.

Hamefura LN 13 Chapter 2 Summary (Part 1)
I am currently reading Hamefura LN13 and will post summaries after each chapter.
I have split Chapter 2 into 2 parts since it is so long.
Previous chapters:
Chapter 1: The Foreign Study
Chapter 2: The Prince of Ethenell (Part1)
***Cezar's POV***
Cezar's Past
Ethenell's previous king was a lewd man who would take the women he desired in his inner palace and then chase them out once he was tired of them. Many women were pleased to get a short luxury life, but if a woman happened to get pregnant, she would be confined in the inner palace.
Cezar's mother was one of these pregnant women. Many of them would lose heart over being kidnapped, and then confined forever, but Cezar's mother was strong. She was part of a traveling troupe, and then she got kidnapped, was forced to sleep with the king, got pregnant with his child, and was locked in the inner palace. In her situation, people would normally spend their time crying, or take their own lives, but she stood strong and kept telling Cezar that once he was older, they would escape the inner palace, join a traveling troupe, and spend their time traveling. She was serious about it and stood strong to fulfill this promise. Unfortunately, Cezar's mother was very weak to heat because of her snow-white cold skin. She would always get sick during the summer. The summer was particularly hot when Cezar was six and she died because her body couldn't stand it.
After his mother had died, Cezar couldn't afford to be sad. As no one cared for him anymore, he was completely neglected in the inner palace and would likely die a dog's death. After he had collapsed, the women around him called him filthy and urged someone to dispose of him, but someone came to him and asked him if he was alright. Cezar mustered his strength to open his eyes and saw that it was a high-ranked noble. The person urged people to call for a doctor. The people around him tried to dissuade him, but the person didn't let them object. He took Cezar's hand and told him to hold on. Cezar felt warm feelings from him and lost consciousness.
When he woke up, Cezar was in a gorgeous and luxurious room that he didn't recognize. He also felt better. He wondered whether he had died and if this was the afterlife. Then, a young man entered the room. It was a virile and healthy-looking man with high-quality clothes, and probably someone of high status. When the young man asked how he felt, Cezar answered as politely as he could. The young man smiled when he said he felt better.
Cezar convalesced in this room, and after he had recovered, he also learned academics and swordplay there. After his body got better, Cezar learned that the young man who saved him was actually his half-brother, and also a candidate for the throne. Upon realizing the difference in status, Cezar tried to correct the way he addressed him, but it made his half-brother sad. His half-brother considered him his little brother since he didn't have any siblings from his mother, and he didn't interact much with their other siblings. His half-brother enjoyed taking care of him and Cezar could tell that he treasured him very much. Cezar wanted to stay by his side and support him.
Once he was able to go out without his half-brother, he realized that a lot of people frowned over his half-brother and him being close, especially the half-brother's mother. Since Cezar was born to a mother with an unknown upbringing, he brought his half-brother's reputation down by staying by his side. He thought maybe he needed to leave his half-brother for his sake. He sought advice from his half-brother's wet nurse and her son Jean, who was also his best friend. Cezar loved his half-brother as much as his half-brother loved him, so he couldn't bear to be a burden to him. It was painful for him that he couldn't return the favor. So he decided that once he would be 15, he would leave the inner palace When he left, he officially said that it was because he didn't belong to the place, but in truth, it was because he didn't want to be a burden to his brother. His half-brother was sad about his parting but didn't oppose it, on the contrary, he gave his support. Jean also accompanied Cezar when he left because the half-brother was worried about him setting off alone.
Cezar and Jean became mercenaries because Cezar had heard it was a quick way to earn money. As a mercenary, he hunted down rebels who targeted the royal family and his half-brother's faction. He believed it was for the sake of his half-brother. Cezar couldn't forget the day his hands were first stained with blood. He feigned composure on the outside while he couldn't help feeling sick. He kept trying to persuade himself that it was necessary so that he could live freely. He kept trying to persuade himself that he wasn't bothered by it.
Ten years passed and Cezar, now accustomed to his easygoing mercenary life, heard that his half-brother had been enthroned. His half-brother had deplored for a long time the decadence of the country and had kept saying he wanted to change it. While Cezar couldn't help him in the inner palace, he hoped that hunting down rebels helped his half-brother even if only a little. When he went to see his half-brother who had become king, the latter asked him to help him, so Cezar didn't go back to his free life as "Mercenary Cezar", and instead, returned to being "Prince Cezar Dahl".
Back to the Present
While Cezar is absorbed in his thoughts on the deck of the ship taking him to Sorcier, Jean, who is now his servant, asks him to return to his room or else he might fall into the sea. Cezar politely replies that he will be fine. Jean discreetly tells him that it was his polite way to ask him to get the hell back to his room because he is making all the newbie sailors nervous. Cezar looks around and realizes that Jean is right. He is now a prince but he still acts the same way as when he was a mercenary.
Cezar is currently riding a ship from Ethenell to Sorcier. It is a shabby ship compared to the Sorcieran ship he rode to the International Assembly. After all, Ethenell is still studying shipmaking from Sorcier. There is also an inexperienced crew on the ship because the seasoned sailors fled the country because of the civil war.
Cezar can't help feeling guilty about being the only one going on a foreign study trip to Sorcier. He feels like he should rather take care of the mountain of work for the reform of the country. Jean assures him it is fine since the King himself told him to go. If he had stayed, he would have just overworked himself. Cezar still feels guilty to be the only one who gets to rest. Jean insists it is fine since the "Big Sis" is there to support the king.
The person Jean referred to as "Big Sis" is the Queen. She has been the half-brother's ally since long ago and wanted to reform the country together with him. Now that she has cleaned the inner palace, she is finally able to support him. Like the King, she told Cezar to go rest in Sorcier.
Cezar still feels guilty. Jean tells him he is always overthinking things. Resting is part of the job and he has hardly rested ever since he left the inner palace at fifteen years old. Cezar retorts that, in that case, Jean should be the same. Jean simply replies that unlike him, he knows when to rest. Jean smirks since Cezar cannot retort anything to that.
Jean adds that this foreign study trip to Sorcier is also the occasion for Cezar to meet a girl he likes. Cezar retorts that he can't do that since she is engaged to one of the princes of Sorcier. Jean teases him: he has only said "a girl he likes" without making it specific. "So, there's a girl you like? :p" Jean splendidly got him. Jean feigns ignorance but he knows who Cezar likes, and most probably reported it to his half-brother. It might be why his half-brother told him "Go on a foreign trip to Sorcier and create good relationships".
Despite this, Cezar thinks it would cause an international problem if he were to steal the fiancée of a prince of Sorcier. His half-brother probably thinks it would be fine since there are rumors saying that
the third prince's engagement is most likely a contractual one since he got engaged not so long after his older brothers
Sorcerian nobles freely break off the engagement decided by their parents during their childhood and marry for love
Katarina has enrolled in the Ministry of Magic because she intends to break off her engagement with Geordo.
However, Cezar could see at the International Assembly that Geordo and Katarina's engagement was not a simple contractual one: Geordo, at least, is deeply in love with Katarina. Geordo is still immature because of his young age but Cezar feels like he will grow into a formidable man. Cezar doesn't think he has the ardor to make an enemy of Geordo to get Katarina. Most probably not.
Ever since Cezar met Katarina, he has been able to do more things that he couldn't do before. Maybe because she has accepted his eyes that he has been hiding behind black lenses. Despite meeting only a few times, he loses his composure whenever he thinks about her. Ever since it was decided that he would go on a foreign study trip to Sorcier, he has remembered things that he forgot until now.
Cezar asks Jean to get out of his room because he wants to get some rest. Jean gets out without a fuss. Cezar lies down on his bed and steels his mind. He will focus on taking advantage of his foreign study to create good relationships. He will contain his feelings and not interact with Katarina no matter what.
*** Katarina's POV***
Start of the Day at the Ministry
Katarina has heard that Cezar has safely arrived in Sorcier and started his foreign study. Even so, Katarina mostly commutes to the Ministry of Magic and then back home, so she may actually never encounter him while he is there.
Katarina heads to the Ministry, then the Magic Tool Department. No one is here yet. Work has not been busy recently. The busyness of the department can usually be measured by the size of the bags under the eyes of the vice-director, Raphael.
The weather is fine, so Katarina opens the curtains so that the room is basked in sunlight. She also takes the broom and starts sweeping. Cleaning the place on sunny days puts Katarina in a good mood. At first, people were shocked whenever she started cleaning the place, but now they are used to it. While it is unusual for ladies of her status to use a broom, she actually uses it at home when her mother urges her to clean the dirt she has brought inside the house after working the fields. In her past life, she also cleaned her room and the school.
Her coworkers arrive in the department room. Laura thanks her for cleaning the place. Katarina notices that Laura has new clothes, which have even more frills than before. Laura has been dressing more intensely lately. Laura explains that, since she dresses as a man for her mission, she wants to dress even girlier in response to that. She has also bought some new make-up. Katarina asks her if she has bought them at the shop she talked about a while ago. Laura confirms. She highly recommends the shop to Katarina since they have quality products. Katarina is not sure about that since she doesn't know anything about cosmetics. She always leaves it to her maid Anne. Laura thinks it is a waste since Katarina has such a pretty face. Katarina thinks Laura is flattering her. However, she has also heard her maids say the same thing. Even so, Katarina is more interested in food than cosmetics, so if she ever visited a cosmetics shop, she would probably end up going to the food shops nearby. Katarina is knowledgeable about food and farming, but not so much about cosmetics, which is something Anne regrets too. When Katarina tells her she is more interested in food than cosmetics, Laura calls her a kid. She thinks she should take care of her appearance for the one she loves. When she asks Katarina if she likes someone, Raphael arrives.
Everyone greets Raphael. Katarina realizes that Sora is actually not here and looks around in search of him. Looking at her, Raphael explains that Sora will not be here today because he has been sent on a mission outside. Raphael also has a specific task for Katarina from Larna.
Larna's Request to Katarina
Larna will be at the castle for the day and she would like Katarina to deliver something to her. Raphael will be Larna's stand-in, so he won't be able to teach her dark magic anyway. Katarina wonders why Larna would specifically ask her to go on an errand, but she accepts.
Laura doesn't think they should let Katarina do this task. Raphael thinks Katarina should be fine since the castle is safe and she won't get lost like Nathan would. But Laura insists that Katarina is so cute that a foreign prince could fall in love with her at first sight. Laura sounds like a grandma who can't help boasting about her grandchild. Katarina feels so embarrassed she feels like running away. She expects Raphael to retort something as tsukkomi, but to her surprise, he agrees with Laura. Katarina feels even more embarrassed and really wants someone to retort something. In the end, Nix retorts that Katarina has lots of heavy turn-offs that make her uncute. Besides, she is not as beautiful as him. While Katarina appreciates the retort, she feels a bit annoyed that he would be the one saying she has turn-offs. Laura doesn't agree with Nix. Nix is annoyed that Laura insists that Katarina is cute and suggests she accompanies Katarina if she is so worried about her. Laura replies that she would like to do that but she can't go to the castle. Katarina tries to change the subject by asking Laura why she can't go to the castle. Laura replies that she would be treated as a suspicious person there. Nix thinks that she just needs to act properly even if the people of the castle question her.
It is time to start work. As Laura and Raphael are still worried about her, Katarina assures them that she will be fine since he often goes to the castle. Katarina prepares the things to deliver to Larna. She feared it might have been a magic tool but it is only some documents. Katarina wonders why Larna especially asked her to deliver them. Raphael also gives her a letter from Larna that she must read on the way.
Katarina opens the letter in the carriage. Larna wrote that she would not operate as "Larna" at the castle. Upon reading this, Katarina understands that Larna will be there as "Susanna". Only a few higher-ups know that Larna is Susanna Randall. As for Katarina, she realized it thanks to her special skill, which enables her to recognize her loved ones even if they are disguised. She recently revealed to Larna that she knew her true identity. Katarina feels relieved now that she understands why Larna specifically asked for her.
When she arrives at the castle, Katarina states that she has something to deliver to Susanna Randall. The servant communicates the room Susanna is in and also informs her that a foreigner is at the castle for his foreign study. Katarina remembers that Cezar is supposed to have arrived in Sorcier. She makes a detour to avoid the places where Cezar might be and arrives at the room Susanna is in.
Talking With Susanna and Jeffrey
When she enters the room, Katarina is surprised to see Jeffrey with Susanna. Katarina is flustered over having to watch her manners, but Jeffrey tells her there is no need. Susanna tells Katarina she is free to consider Jeffrey as a pebble. Katarina is shocked that Susanna can be so rude to a prince. Jeffrey tells Katarina not to mind it too much since this is how they always are. Katarina is surprised since they don't appear so intimate in public.
Katarina gives the documents to Susanna. Susanna takes a look at them and confirms everything is okay. Katarina is glad to have fulfilled the task, but she wonders why Susanna forgot these documents and why she didn't retrieve them herself since the Ministry is not so far from the castle. Susanna replies that she must stay at the castle today to interact with the foreign prince who has come for his foreign study. Normally she wouldn't make this kind of mistake, but she actually wanted to give and tell Katarina something.
Susanna returns to Katarina the pocket mirror object that Geordo bought for her during Keith's kidnapping case. It appeared to be a magic tool, and it was thanks to it she could form a contract with Pochi. After the case, she left the magic tool with Larna so that she could investigate it.
Unfortunately, Susanna couldn't learn much about the magic tool, except that it is very old. Based on the material, it seems to have been made during the period of the foundation of the Sorcier Kingdom. Katarina is surprised to learn it is such an old artifact since it seems to be in a good state. Larna thinks it might be because magic was cast on it. Maria has confirmed that there is a faint trace of dark magic on it. Katarina is amazed that dark magic can be used to keep objects in such a good state. Susanna thinks it can also be the dark magician who is amazing. Dark magic, like other magics, is influenced by the skills of the caster.
Aside from this, it also means that dark magic already existed during the time of the foundation of the Sorcier Kingdom. The pocket mirror object might have been created before magic developed in Sorcier. There is so much mystery around dark magic, but Susanna hasn't been able to dig anything. There is nearly no data on the hundreds of years after the foundation of the kingdom, especially regarding magic. The Sorcier Kingdom is supposed to have been founded by magic wielders who came from another continent, but this is not necessarily true since history can have been rewritten at some point for any reason.
Anyway, Susanna couldn't find anything despite many investigations, so she thought she should return the pocket mirror object to Katarina. However, she can hold on to it if Katarina doesn't want to keep it.
Katarina is hesitant to keep it. This pocket mirror object has dark magic attached to it and some kind of history. She doesn't think Geordo would hold it against her if she let Susanna keep his gift. But this pocket mirror object is also what enabled them to save Keith. Besides, she has a feeling that it isn't a "dangerous" or "bad" object, but rather a "good" object. She has no basis for this, but her gut feeling usually turns out to be right. As a result, Katarina decides to keep the pocket mirror object.
Tumblr media
Next, they move on to the next topic. Jeffrey tells her about how dangerous the person behind Sarah is. Despite all his efforts, he still hasn't been able to catch them. And this person most likely targets her. Katarina has only considered the danger of her doom flags until now, but she can feel the danger of a person that Jeffrey and Susanna can't catch. Jeffrey is trying to protect her and her surroundings as best as he can, but at the end of the day it is Katarina herself who can protect herself the best, so he asks her to be very very careful.
Susanna and Jeffrey have finished their business with Katarina, so they return to attending to Cezar. Before leaving, Susanna advises Katarina to rely on Pochi.
Talking to Pochi
Katarina ponders Susanna's words on the way to the carriage gate. Pochi can get huge and usually listens to what she says but there are times when he is out of control. Katarina summons Pochi when she is in a corridor out of sight. She tells him that she is targeted by a dangerous person and asks him to protect her when she is in danger. Pochi barks like he understood what she said. Katarina happily thanks Pochi and takes him into a hug. She thoroughly enjoys his fluffiness. Pochi suddenly senses something. He gets out of Katarina's arms and runs full speed somewhere. Katarina feels sad that Pochi would suddenly abandon her despite the great mood they had there. She runs after him.
Meeting Again the Mysterious Blond Man
Without surprise, Pochi leads her for the fourth time to the forbidden area where Geordo and Alan's shut-in uncle lives. Katarina wonders if there is something in there that attracts Pochi. Pochi won't answer when she asks. Looking around, Katarina doesn't find the place so strange except that it is a bit dark because of the unpruned trees.
Last time, she peeked at one of the open windows, which led her to meet an incredibly gorgeous young man who was probably Geordo and Alan's uncle. At that time, despite being their first meeting, he called her a villainous lady for leading the prince on and playing with him. Unlike the badmouthing she heard in high society, these words stuck deep in her heart because they were true. But it is thanks to these words that she has been able to think of her feelings afterward, so she feels thankful for them.
Still, Katarina doesn't want to hear painful words like that again. As she thinks of turning back, Pochi suddenly runs further inside the area and jumps inside a brushwood. Katarina chases after him and goes through the brushwoods. At that moment, she hears the voice of a man startled by Pochi. Katarina freaks out because Pochi has been seen by someone. She comes out of the brushwood and apologizes to the man for her dog startling him.
The young man appears to be the same person that she was thinking of just now: the blond-haired and obsidian-black-eyed man from last time. The young man coldly tells her that it is a restricted area. Katarina explains that she has come here after her pet has run away. Katarina hurriedly retrieves Pochi, who seems displeased. The young man coldly replies it is common sense not to let pets run free inside the castle. Katarina agrees and sincerely apologizes. The young man urges her to go away since she has found her pet. He really seems to hate her.
Katarina suddenly remembers she has something to tell him, and stops him from leaving. The young man has a suspicious look. She sincerely thanks him for telling her last time that she was unconsciously hurting people. Thanks to this, she was able to realize the impact of her actions. Katarina has been wanting to thank him the next time she sees him, and she is glad she has been able to convey her thanks. The young man is frozen in shock. Katarina asks him if he is alright. The young man is completely astounded she would express thanks for something like that. He wonders what she has in her head. He mutters to himself that he knew she was weird but he didn't realize to what extent. Katarina doesn't know how to react and looks at the young man. She can tell he is Geordo's relative: he is tall and has a handsome build. While she is fascinated by him, the young man reverts to his cold self and urges her to go away. As the young man is about to leave in the opposite direction, Katarina unconsciously grabs his arm. The young man is shocked. Katarina doesn't understand why she did this, but she pretends that she wants him to guide her out since she might get lost. The young man shakes her hand off and for some reason dusts off the leaves on her head. The leaves probably come from when she went through the brushwood. After he has finished, the young man leaves for good this time. Katarina thanks him for removing the leaves from her head but he doesn't reply. Pochi is sad while watching the young man leave, so Katarina wonders if Pochi expressly runs here to see him. But she doesn't get an answer from Pochi. Katarina is confused about the young man: on one hand, he seems to hate her, on the other hand, he has removed the leaves from her head. Maybe she will ask Geordo and Alan about him.
