February: Coeli's Monochrome Picks
Sweethearts / Jeanette MacDonald as Gwen Marlowe
Although this movie was actually shot in Technicolor, this is such a nice monochrome photo that I'm putting it in as a bonus for today! The gown is by Adrian.

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife / Claudette Colbert as Nicole de Loiselle
I haven't seen Bluebeard's Eighth Wife--one of Ernst Lubitsch's later efforts--but I happened across this photo of a costume and absolutely loved it. The film is from 1938, but we're really looking ahead to the 1940s in the shape of it. Travis Banton was the costume designer for this movie.

Highlights and Shadows (1938)
[letterboxd | Watch at Eastman House]
Director: Kenneth R. Edwards
Director of Photography: James Sibley Watson, Jr.
“This contrast between the standards of handicraft and those of machine products relates, of course, only to the two methods—not to the men or materials involved. The pinnacles of achievement in handicraft will always set an example—for the machine Industry will always require handicraft if only for the reason that the initial step in machine production is the creation of the original pattern.”
