Sewing an 18th Century Gown - Planning
The importance of properly planning a large project cannot be underestimated. Unfortunately, I don’t learn my own lessons and made some mistakes.
I knew exactly the type of gown I wanted to make, though I'm not sure where I had seen it.
It had to be a Robe à la Française (or Sack-back gown), recognisable by glorious pleats on the back.
So what do I do? Buy a pattern, of course! Without delay!
Big mistake - that pattern ended up being almost entirely useless to me. Acting on impulse is fun and all, but research and planning will result in a much smoother process. It’s important to pinpoint the exact time period, research extant gowns, fabrics, construction, find out what undergarments you will be required, find the appropriate pattern (or guidance on how to make your own), then, and only then, get to buying fabrics, patterns, anything.
In the end I settled to a 1770s Robe à la Française, though my persona was going to be rather nostalgic/ old fashioned. The undergarments I would need were a shift, stays, pocket hoops, stockings, under-petticoat, petticoat, and stomacher. I did use a pattern for the stays, but the rest of the patterns were mostly drafted using guidance by Marquise.de.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes and compassion, it’s really made this flare up so much more bearable to feel a little less alone on this chronic illness island. . . In the last couple days, I realized something that’s got me rather put out. I know which medication helps with this pain, but I can’t have it, so here I am alternating between a tens unit and a heating pad just to stay upright. . . I had this back pain for months last year, until finally one of my doctors put me on a specific anti inflammatory. It was like night and day, within a week I was mobile and energetic, I went out with friends, joined some costuming clubs, did some events, etc. . . But sometimes with chronic illness you have to change meds to address different issues. A different doctor started me on new antibiotics that conflict with my anti inflammatories, but I need the antibiotics for Lyme treatment, so a couple weeks ago I went off the meds that were actually making my back pain manageable and here we are. . . It’s just frustrating to know what could help me and yet I can’t have it because this flawed meat suit needs other things too. I would like an exchange, I want a functioning body please!! . . #chronicillness #chronicpain #lymedisease #historicalcostuming #historicalcostume #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturystays #stays #corset #rococo #rococostyle https://www.instagram.com/p/CIeNubHDsa8/?igshid=5k8z8w157aim

SOON. I've been busy sewing all the things, but now that my stockings by @burnleyandtrowbridge have arrived, I'm just a cap short of my full underpinnings! (There's only one pocket done so far, but I'm going to eventually embroider another one also using the design @vamuseum has released based on an unfinished extant set that I used for the first one) Aside from the stockings and the boning channels on the stays (stays are the #augustastays ) everything is hand sewn, and I used an old throw pillow dug out of storage to stuff my bumroll! 😆 It feels like I've been working on this forever, and I'm finally near the end! Then I can start on my gown, which will be a whole new challenge, but I'll have a full set of underthings already there to build over. #sewing #historicalsewing #18thcenturyfashion #18thcentury #18thcenturystays #stays #staymaking #historicalsewing #historicalfashion #historicalcostuming #handsewing #handmade #staymaker #bumroll #fichu #somuchsewing (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBwo7bMDlN_/?igshid=1hp0e15rzgj2y

little sample. i wanted to check my design for kat’s stays would work before diving in. the boning channels are velvet ribbon, and the binding is velvet bias. they’re going to lace at the front and the back, so i’ve decided to use metal eyelets at the centre back, but do hand worked eyelets at the front. for the prettiness factor. and to add a little more historical accuracy. because while the shape of these is accurate, the velvet external boning channels are definitely not. you can see my inspiration for this anachronism in my kat stories highlight #stays #corset #sample #toile #mockup #18thcenturystays #18thcentury #georgian #18thcenturyfashion #georgianfashion #silk #velvet #silktaffeta #pinksilk #velvetribbon #blackvelvet #eyelets #handsewing #handworked #whipstitch #canvas #historicalfashion #historicalsewing #periodsewing #sewingproject https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz8lzukA5wh/?igshid=15puacv30i6ef

Men's 18th century stays, a misunderstood garment. These are based on the Christina pattern that is available in my etsy shop, but scaled down to fit a smaller figure. I'll be wearing them for back support, and I cannot wait. #18thcenturymenswear #stays #18thcenturystays #menscorset https://www.instagram.com/p/B0uU2bhDRvi/?igshid=14elwlw2edz88

Finished pretty much all of the foundation layers of my #18thcentury outfit. For the chemise, bum-pad, and #18thcenturystays I used the @americanduchess pattern. I am not really a ruffle person so I avoided that part. The petticoats are not from a pattern, as they were pretty straightforward. Next I'm on to the skirt and pockets before tackling the jacket which will require some pattern drafting.

Royalcore, or the royal aesthetic, creates and fulfills a unique fantasy and experiencing royalty. This romantic and nostalgic aesthetic, also known as princesscore or queencore, is historically inspired by European Royalty aesthetics, particularly from the late 1700s (Marie Antoinette) and early 1800s (Bridgerton). The lyrical clothing, magnificent flamboyant house décor, and dreamy, blasé demeanour are a charming blend of Versailles grandeur with Rococo Cottage and Shabby Chic.
The royal look has become so popular that a hashtag called #18thcenturystays has sprung on Instagram. Inspire your own Royalcore Aesthetic.

Let’s talk chronic pain for a hot sec . . Sometimes I’m totally okay. I can go about my life like I don’t even have a problem. But then sometimes, out of the blue and for no apparent reason, you’ll get a flare up and everything becomes 100x harder. . . I could feel this flare up coming on for a couple days, but I tried my best to ignore it, and in doing so, I probably made it worse than it had to be. Now it’s painful to lay down, it’s even more painful to sit up, and bending over is essentially impossible—tried it and couldn’t see for a solid minute. I’m upright thanks to pain relief patches and Advil, a heating pad, tens unit, and a corset to support my back and relieve some of the pressure. . . So here’s your friendly reminder to be kind to your body and to yourself—I can’t accomplish a whole lot right now, but I’m doing my best and that’s what matters. . . #chronicillness #chronicpain #lymedisease #historicalcostuming #historicalcostume #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturystays #stays #corset #rococo #rococostyle https://www.instagram.com/p/CIY7hntDbDr/?igshid=q92sstyliehr
