Ed Luce: It is not just Donald Trump who dodged a bullet. Half an inch to the left and the cartridge that grazed Trump’s ear would have turned him into a martyr. There is no telling what his death would have unleashed. As it is, the reprehensible attempted assassination of Trump will have profound reverberations for US democracy. Within seconds of being blanketed by secret service agents, Trump was yelling “fight, fight, fight” to the crowd. The instantly ubiquitous photo of him pumping his fist against the backdrop of the stars and stripes will become the emblem of his campaign.
A high-trust society would have awaited the facts of the shooting before leaping to conclusions. By that yardstick, America is close to the edge. Two of the Republicans auditioning to be Trump’s vice-presidential running mate blamed Democrats for inciting hatred of Trump. The favourite, Ohio senator JD Vance, said the Biden campaign’s rhetoric “led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination”. Tim Scott, the South Carolina senator, said Democrats’ “inflammatory rhetoric puts lives at risk”. Elon Musk, owner of the site, X, on which these statements were posted, was quick to weigh in on a conspiracy about how the shooter could have got so close: “Either extreme incompetence or it was deliberate,” Musk wrote.
Many on the left were equally quick to claim that the shooting was a staged or false flag operation to boost Trump’s election prospects. It is notable, however, that no senior Democratic official has yet fanned those rumours. The identity of the suspected shooter, a 20-year-old man called Thomas Matthew Crooks, offered little help. Though he was a registered Republican and an enthusiastic gun owner, he had made a small donation to a pro-Democratic group. It is plausible that like most US assassins, Crooks was acting alone and delusional. That will not stop political entrepreneurs from blaming the shooting on their ideological enemies.
The biggest question is what Trump will do with it. No honest accounting of America’s fetid climate can ignore the fact that the former president himself is the country’s most influential exponent of political violence. He described those who stormed Capitol Hill with knives and nooses on January 6 2021 as “unbelievable patriots”. He mocked an attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of former Democratic speaker, Nancy Pelosi, after one of his own supporters smashed his head with a hammer. And he encouraged extremist militias to “stand by” shortly before the 2020 election. In calmer democracies, an incident as lethal as the near murder of a party leader with a AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle would lead to bipartisan calls for gun control. There is no chance Trump’s party will change its mind on that subject. The number of AR-15s in America has been estimated to be as high as 44mn, which puts comparisons with earlier periods of US political violence into perspective.
Whether Trump gets a lasting sympathy boost remains to be seen. But three conclusions can already be drawn. The first is that the Republican national convention in Milwaukee this week will be dominated by his near miss. Trump’s campaign is enormously skilled at choreographing optics to enhance his message. The iconic fist-pumping imagery of the candidate rising courageously from his near death will suffuse the convention stage. Trump is expected to name his running mate in the next two days — probably on Monday. Expect the nation to be riveted by admiration or dread at the use to which Republicans put Trump’s near martyrdom. At Trump’s first presidential convention in Cleveland in 2016, the streets around the main hall teemed with private militias brandishing arms. Policing the streets of Milwaukee this week will be an unusually fraught challenge, even by America’s standards.

Taking Flight in San Diego
flickr
Taking Flight in San Diego por James Belmont Por Flickr: Taking Flight in San Diego On June 28, 2024, I spent some time watching mass transit doing its thing at the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. While looking northward along the maze of trackage, I saw a jet fly by. It seemed really close to my vantage point, and quite low to the ground. San Diego International Airport is unique, competing with Washington National as the busiest single runway air terminal in the United States. The landing strip is only half a mile from the train station! 😮 I knew a photo of a train with a jet (between the tall buildings) was a must. Capturing it was a challenge, to say the very least. After multiple attempts (that failed miserably), I nailed a photo I was pleased with. Luck was on my side as the jet I captured wore a one of a kind livery. In 2021, Southwest Airlines released a Boeing 737-800 in special paint to commemorate the carrier's 50th anniversary, dubbed "Freedom One". A few stats: • Freedom One took 14 days to paint using a crew of 8-10 people working per shift. • It took more than 60 gallons of paint and primer to paint Freedom One, and the aircraft features 15 different paint colors, with the predominant two being red and white. • Just like the flag of the USA, Freedom One features 50 stars and 13 stripes. Each star measures 39 x 40", the same size as the Heart on the belly of each Southwest aircraft.

We just watched three episodes of Interview with the Vampire. And it is ridiculously good. Like when I was a kid Queen of the Damned was everything to me. And I loved the original movie. But this is a different animal. The costumes are incredible. It's sad and funny and infuriating. It's so good. Highly highly recommend. But I am now very tired. I knit basically the whole time and got 7 squares done. Felt nice to be productive.
It was a pretty productive day overall. I really appreciated getting to sleep a little bit later. I did sleep a little better last night but it did feel really hot in here at time. Its probably just from the sun beating on us for a lot of the day but the temperature is supposed to lower again tomorrow so I have hopes of it being cool in here again.
When I woke up I would lay in bed for a bit. Getting up at 845. I took a shower and made sure my tablet was charged. I would have to leave here at about 940. The museum is only 10 minutes away but I was worried about parking. Thankfully I didn't need to be in the end.
Once I got dressed I actually felt pretty good. I had a little breakfast. Well I had a glass of a milk and a cookie. That's basically a breakfast. And I laid on the couch with sweetp until it was time to go. I would end up sitting on the stairs for the last few minutes because I was anxious about leaving. But in the end it was totally fine.
I got over to Little Italy and got an excellent parking space literally three cars from the front door of the place. I was really lucky. Also very nervous because the signs were all bent so I was only mostly sure I was parking in a legal space. And thankfully I was.
I wandered the wrong way for a second but turned around and found the house. I liked that you could see where the next row house clearly has been, but is now a courtyard. I took pictures of all the signs. I particularly loved their ground map of the United States with each state being represented by the state stone, donated by that state. It was really cool to see.
Chris would come outside to the courtyard to get me. He was a really nice guy. He is the second replacement for the woman I was originally in contact with last December. The person who replaced her apparently only stayed for two months and he's the replacement of the replacement. He knows a ton about the civil war and we had lots to talk about.
I was really blessed. I not only got a private tour of the house, I got a behind the scenes look at spaces they don't currently have open to the public, he moved ropes so I could see artifacts and spaces close up, and I got to go into the archives. It really truly felt like I was living the dream today. And I had so much fun.
I got to learn how to flag, the actual star spangled banner that Mary Pickersgill made, was constructed. With 15 fussy cut stars and special seams for each of the 15 stripes. I got to see paintings of Mary and her family. I learned a lot!
And the house was really neat as well. I loved seeing the artifacts and especially her bedroom, where the flag was most likely sewn. It wasn't just her. Her daughter, her servant, her sister, and two slave girls, all helped. But she was the business woman commissioned. And because of the enslaved girls, she didn't have to do any of the other house things and was then able to just focus on the flag. Which I think gets lost in the conversation a lot about the time (very quick) she was able to finish the flag. Chris is really interested in putting that story more forward, I appreciated that.
We talked about aesthetics. What he was hoping for for the colors of the bear and the dress she would wear. Accessories she may have, tools and such. We landed on a yellow body and a blue dress, but pink and peach were also thrown around. I would take lots of reference pictures and felt really excited for the project.
Before I left we discussed cost and he seemed really cool about it. I'll get everything in writing. And then I wished him a great rest of the day and headed out. I was in an excellent mood.
I thought the excellent mood would carry me through going to run some errands. But the heat got to me and I started feeling really woozy. I would change my GPS half way to the store, and went straight home.
When I got back here I parked and went inside and was sad about how hot it was outside. But inside was a lot better. I would put the oven on to make cream cheese wontons. I put together a bowl for my pasta salad. And went to work on stuffing some of my quilt squares for my puff quilt in the studio while my lunch cooked.
And lunch was very good. I had strawberry ice tea. I tried very hard to be hydrated. It was tough.
While I ate my lunch I tried the new video game James got me. Frog detective. It wasn't a long game, only about an hour. But it was fun. A simple little puzzle where I had to give different characters objects to get other objects to solve a mystery. Very low stakes. Cute art. It was funny and it was fun. There are two more games in the series. I may play them tomorrow. It was a good time.
I would lay down for a little. But soon I went upstairs to work on my commission.
I was a little stuck at first. But once I got going I felt really inspired and good. I got the bear itself done fairly fast. The accessories always take the longest. I would trace the table and chair from her room. Cleaned that up. Worked on a draping flag. Some little sewing tools. I have more plans but I just think it's the cutest thing. She came out so sweet. I really hope they like her. I quoted him about 5 hours of drawing, and were about 2 hours in. I may make her an actual background, but we will see. I don't want it to be to busy!
Around 4 I moved downstairs. I asked James to bring me French fries home. I didn't realize they were having such a tough day today. A flat tire. Hurt their leg. Internet went down. More and more things just weighing on my poor husband. But they would still get me fries. Even if they were in hold for 7 minutes! I love them so much.
I heated up nacho cheese for the fries when they got home with them. We shared them and James told me about their day while they started making crepe batter. I was very happy to have them home.
They went upstairs to record something for their podcast. And when they were done we would have crepes and watch interview with the vampire. And it was just a really nice night. I got really woozy at times. And my stomach hurts a little. But overall I was good. It was probably the best I've felt for the longest periods. It wasn't perfect. But I was happy.
And now I am tired. I am going to shower soon. And get ready for bed. And hopefully tomorrow is good too.
We were supposed to get our washer and dryer delivered tomorrow but now we think it was canceled because it's backordered? But we are very confused because the number in the email said we still have a delivery so I will stay home to wait just in case. Celia may come over after lunch. I just hope it's not as hot and I feel okay.
I hope you all have a good day tomorrow. I hope you sleep well. Be safe everyone. Until next time. Goodnight!

tangentially reminded by those last two posts (in the sense of “well none of us have ever been on the wrong side of anything”)—the reason that the Confederate Battle Flag* has an X-shaped cross instead of an upright cross is.
At the First Battle of Manassas, near Manassas, Virginia, the similarity between the "Stars and Bars" and the "Stars and Stripes" caused confusion and military problems. Regiments carried flags to help commanders observe and assess battles in the warfare of the era. At a distance, the two national flags were hard to tell apart.[40] Also, Confederate regiments carried many other flags, which added to the possibility of confusion. After the battle, General P. G. T. Beauregard wrote that he was "resolved then to have [our flag] changed if possible, or to adopt for my command a 'Battle flag', which would be Entirely different from any State or Federal flag".[20] He turned to his aide, who happened to be William Porcher Miles, the former chairman of the Confederate Congress's Committee on the Flag and Seal. Miles described his rejected national flag design to Beauregard. Miles also told the Committee on the Flag and Seal about the general's complaints and request that the national flag be changed. The committee rejected the idea by a four-to-one vote, after which Beauregard proposed the idea of having two flags.
[...] According to Museum of the Confederacy Director John Coski, Miles' design was inspired by one of the many "secessionist flags" flown at the South Carolina secession convention in Charleston of December 1860. That flag was a blue St George's Cross (an upright or Latin cross) on a red field, with 15 white stars on the cross, representing the slave-holding states,[41][42] and, on the red field, palmetto and crescent symbols. Miles received various feedback on this design, including a critique from Charles Moise, a self-described "Southerner of Jewish persuasion." Moise liked the design but asked that "... the symbol of a particular religion not be made the symbol of the nation." Taking this into account, Miles changed his flag, removing the palmetto and crescent, and substituting a heraldic saltire ("X") for the upright cross. [...] The diagonal cross was preferable, he wrote, because "it avoided the religious objection about the cross (from the Jews and many Protestant sects), because it did not stand out so conspicuously as if the cross had been placed upright thus." He also argued that the diagonal cross was "more Heraldric [sic] than Ecclesiastical, it being the 'saltire' of Heraldry, and significant of strength and progress."[43] According to Coski, the Saint Andrew's Cross (also used on the flag of Scotland as a white saltire on a blue field) had no special place in Southern iconography at the time. If Miles had not been eager to conciliate the Southern Jews, his flag would have used the traditional upright "Saint George's Cross" (as used on the flag of England, a red cross on a white field). James B. Walton submitted a battle flag design essentially identical to Miles' except with an upright Saint George's cross, but Beauregard chose the diagonal cross design.[44]
yeah
*it was specifically from the Army Of Northern Virginia, and its enshrinement as a symbol of the confederacy was due to
(1) Daughters Of The Confederacy and Confederate Veteran groups doing groundwork of building the Lost Cause narrative after the war ended, and then later
(2) revived as a racist reaction against the civil rights movement

Drag Pride Flag
Although there was an earlier version of the Drag Pride Flag created by artist Sean Campbell in 1999, it was originally known as the Feather Pride Flag. 15 years later, Veranda L’Ni, a drag performer from Cleveland, Ohio, created this second iteration of the Drag Pride Flag—the one most commonly used now. The flag made its debut at the 2016 Austin International Drag Festival and features a crown and stars on three vertical stripes, each of which has a meaning:
Purple: A passion for drag
White: The blank slate a face and body become when creating drag characters
Blue: Self-expression and loyalty
Crown: Leadership within the community
Stars: The many forms of drag

Let’s talk about the next 20 years. But before we do that, let’s reflect on what happened 15 years and 250 years ago. On March 23, 2023, Pluto will move into Aquarius. It has been in Capricorn for the last 15 years. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius was from 1776 to 1798. 1776 when our country was in its infancy and The Declaration of Independence was signed. In 1777 the first Stars and Stripes flag was introduced completing the unity of the United States of America and it was the beginning of movements abolishing slavery. The US is entering a Pluto return. Why is this important? Most don’t know much about Pluto so let’s review what Pluto represents astrologically. Pluto is the planet of death and rebirth. It represents transformation. It also represents shared finances and sexuality. It’s the breakdown and rebuild of societal structures and is a generational planet with its larger impacts on society as a whole. Now let’s review Aquarius. Aquarius represents the collective and our community on one side but on the flip side it represents isolation. It’s the- I love you all but leave me alone sign. Aquarius is a fixed and stubborn energy. So here’s the thing, being stubborn isn’t gonna work under Pluto. It will break it all down and destroy everything in its path. It’s the Tower card in the Tarot deck. So what does this all mean? Let’s first reflect on when Pluto entered structured Capricorn in 2008. What did we see? The first financial crisis and recession in our most recent history, the housing market crashed and we elected our first black President, just to name a few. Now, Pluto has been hanging out at the critical 29° mark in Capricorn. It’s been doing a review of everything that’s gone down in the last 15 years and we’re really seeing it in the news. The financial system is taking a hit. Banks are going bankrupt once again. (Continued in comments) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpxUdeegNOl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I took my 15-star 15-stripe US flag out of the drawer where it has been in storage since I moved to Ohio, and folded it into the correct ravioli (Trust me, I was on school Color Guard).
In the future I hope to have a flag pole. I can't miss the opportunity now that I live in War of 1812 central! Like how New England loves the 13-star flag. I have a really nice flag suitable for outdoor use, and I can't wait to fly the stars and stripes and extra stripes.

TODAY IN HISTORY: September 14, 1814 - At the Battle of Baltimore, poem 'Defence of Fort McHenry' was written by Francis Scott Key. The poem was later used as the lyrics of The Star-Spangled Banner. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort after the battle. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a social club in London. Smiths' song, "To Anacreon in Heaven" (or "The Anacreontic Song"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States.

20 Independence Day Activity Ideas for Kids.
Independence Day is more than simply a holiday; it's a chance to teach children about the history of their country and to celebrate it. Here are some independence day activities for kids. These exercises improve cognitive and creative abilities while promoting patriotism. A collection of pleasant and instructive enrichment activities is provided below.
Tumblr media
1. Understanding Independence: A Historical Overview
Give a quick overview of Independence Day's historical background to start the day. Describe the significance of the day, mentioning important people and occasions that contributed to the country's freedom. This provides a significant context for the upcoming events.
2. 20 Independence Day Activities for Kids
Here are detailed descriptions of 20 educational and fun independence day activities for kids:
1. Flag Hoisting Ceremony:
Organize a flag hoisting at your local school or community center. Teach children the proper flag etiquette and the meaning behind the flag's colors and symbols.
2. Patriotic Parades:
Have children create their own parade floats from cardboard boxes, decorate their bikes with flags, or dress in national colors and march around the neighborhood.
3. Crafting National Symbols:
Provide materials like construction paper, glue, and scissors for kids to make their own national symbols such as flags, national birds, or floral emblems. This ties into independence day crafts for kids.
4. Independence Day Themed Puzzles:
Create or print puzzles that feature national heroes or significant historical events. These puzzles can be tailored to different age groups to ensure that everyone is challenged and engaged.
5. DIY Patriotic Badges:
Using cardstock, markers, and safety pins, guide children to make their own patriotic badges that they can wear throughout the day. This craft helps develop fine motor skills and allows for personal expression.
6. Create Firework Art:
Mimic fireworks with craft materials like glitter, paint, and black paper. This safe alternative to actual fireworks lets kids unleash their creativity and safely celebrate the excitement of fireworks.
7. Freedom Speeches:
Encourage older children to write and deliver short speeches on the meaning of independence. This fosters critical thinking and enhances public speaking skills.
8. Documentary Screening:
Select age-appropriate documentaries that explain the history and significance of Independence Day, followed by a discussion to deepen understanding.
9. Patriotic Sing-Along:
Organize a sing-along of national songs. Provide lyrics and maybe even some musical accompaniment to make this activity festive and fun.
10. Historical Skits:
Have children act out significant moments in history using simple costumes and props. This activity can be both entertaining and educational, as kids learn through performing.
11. Liberty Bell Crafts:
As a preschool independence day craft, guide kids in making Liberty Bells from paper cups and tin foil, discussing the historical importance of the bell.
12. National Hero Biographies:
Assign each child a national hero to research and present. This could include dressing up as the hero and explaining their role in the nation’s history.
13. Patriotic Bookmark Crafting:
Kids can create bookmarks using red, white, and blue ribbons and cardstock, decorated with stars and stripes. This is a simple craft that encourages reading and keeps the patriotic theme.
14. Flag Mosaic Art Project:
Children can tear up pieces of colored paper to create a mosaic of the national flag. This is a fantastic group activity that promotes teamwork and discussion about the flag's meaning.
15. Independence Day Time Capsule:
Children can fill a time capsule with current year items, letters to their future selves, and their thoughts on independence. Decide on a future date to open it, perhaps on a significant future Independence Day.
16. Design Patriotic T-Shirts:
With fabric paint and stencils, let children design their own T-shirts. This activity allows for personal expression and develops design skills.
17. Host a Cultural Food Day:
This encourages families to bring dishes that represent their heritage, which promotes cultural diversity and understanding among children.
18. Map the Freedom Trail:
For those in countries with 'freedom trails', mapping them out can be both fun and educational, tying geography with history.
19. Freedom Flowers Planting:
Plant flowers in the national colors. This activity teaches kids about plant care and the importance of nature in national symbolism.
20. Make Tri-Color Bracelets:
Use beads in national colors to make bracelets. This helps improve fine motor skills and serves as a wearable expression of national pride.
3. Tips for Organizing Independence Day Activities for Kids
Plan ahead to ensure you have all the necessary materials. Tailor activities to be age-appropriate and engaging for all children involved. Encourage participation from parents and community members to make the day more impactful and memorable.
4. Choosing the Right Materials for Independence Day Crafts
Always opt for non-toxic, safe materials, especially when working with younger children. Consider environmentally friendly materials to teach sustainability alongside national pride.
Conclusion
Kids' independence day activities are a great way to honor and teach children about the history and ideals of their nation. In addition to making the celebration more enjoyable, these activities foster a sense of patriotism and duty. Engage in these Independence Day activities to see how young minds are developing.

The supposed "unbloated original" of the US flag is Chile, yes. (Which I do have to admit is hilariously similar.)
Here's what the actual unbloated original of the US flag is:
Tumblr media
Which in turn directly descends from this:
Tumblr media
...or, at least, this is one of the theories, and/or only one of the ancestors. The other theory, and/or the other ancestral line, would have the unbloated original look like this:
Tumblr media
(Note that this is a modern representation! There's a scantily attested even more unbloated version which lacks the top right red stripe, such that the cross at top left seamlessly continues into the right side. It looks pretty wacky and I couldn't find a good representation of that edition that wasn't a tiny historical image.)
Fun fact: after the 14th and 15th state were added, the flag was amended in 1794 (in effect from 1795) to add two more stars and two more stripes! So for a while the US flag had 15 stars and 15 stripes (the famous Star-Sprangled Banner was one of those). But then new states kept going in and there was no representation of those on the flag, and it was clearly untenable to have 20-and-counting stripes, so a new amendment in 1818 went back to 13 stripes and set out the "as many stars as states" protocol which is still in force today.
