"Then I said to her: “My lady, these examples show that long ago, the wise were honored more than they are now and the sciences were held in greater esteem. But regarding your words about women who are expert in the art of painting, I know a woman right now by the name of Anastasia who is so talented and skilled in painting decorative borders on manuscripts and landscape backgrounds that one cannot find an artisan to equal her in the whole city of Paris, where the best in the world are found.
She so excels at painting flower motifs in the most exquisite detail and is so highly esteemed that she is entrusted with the richest and most valuable manuscripts. I know this from my own experience, because she has done work for me that is considered exceptional among the decorations created by other great artisans."

Cooking like a Sailor - Naples Biscuit
Something sweet again and also something that is easy to store and keep, which is why the Sailors also appreciated these biscuits.
They are called Naples biscuits and can be used either with a warm drink such as grog, tea or coffee or as a base for other dishes such as trifles or tiramisu.
Tumblr media
Naples biscuits are said to have originated in the 14th century at the court of the County of Savoy and were created on the occasion of a visit by the King of France. Over time, they spread throughout Europe and were also known by the English name ladyfingers or sponge fingers, by the Italian name savoiardi or by the French name boudoirs or the German Löffelbiskuit.
For the recipe (in: Labscouse and Spotted Dog by Anne Chotzinoff Grossman and Lisa Grossman Thomas) for 30 portions you need:
3 eggs, separated
1/3 cup superfine sugar
1/8 teaspoon rose water
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup flour
Preheat the oven to 350° or 177°C. Beat the egg whites, gradually adding the sugar. The mixture should be smooth and glossy.
Now mix the egg yolks with the rose water and salt and gradually add to the egg whites. Now sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold in.
Finally, pour the mixture into a piping bag and pipe into finger-length shapes onto a baking tray lined with baking paper or lightly greased. Now place the biscuits in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes.
Enjoy snacking like this or in another dish.

POV you're a woman living in Metz in the late 14th century, where you pray eight times a day from the Hours of the Virgin in your lovely little book of hours.
