Bringing today a very special Photo Series about a unit that has come a long way, today i present you the 182nd Fighter Squadron, the Lonestar Gunfighters.
Established in the mid 1943, the Gunfighers, is a unit of the Texas Air National Guard (ANG) 149th Fighter Wing, based at Kelly Field Annex, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.
The unit flew during World War II using P-47 Thunderbolts doing fighter sweeps, bombing runs and participating in numerous battles such as the Battle of the Bulge.
Throughout the years the Gunfighters have used numerous aircraft, most being fighter-bombers such as the F-84E and F-84G Thunderjets with these the 182nd flew many combat missions over Korea and awarding the spot of being the first ANG unit to down a MIG-15.
After the Korean War, the squadron was assigned to Air Defense Command and replaced it’s Thunderjets for F-51H Mustangs which were later replaced by F-80C Shooting Stars.
Fast fowarding to the end of the 20th century, in the late 90s, the unit received the F-16 Fighting Falcon, capable of handling all the new missiles and bombs.
But by the of the Cold War the threat to the US homeland from long range bombers and cruise missiles coming from Russia was no more. Then in 1999, the Gunfighters had it’s role shifted from Air Combat operations to being a Formal Training Unit of pilots for the F-16C/D.
One of it’s latest operations was Operation Noble Eagle after the September 11, 2001 attacks against several high value facilities in the US.
And that’s it for this Photo Series!!!!!
I got to thank @the-hoss-ashley for providing these awesome photos and the material for this Photo Series!!!

149TH FIGHTER WING SHIELD The distinctive insignia, shown in the upper left hand corner, of the "Alamo Group" reflects the unit's proud history. The blue field with the white clouds symbolizes the sky, the primary theater of Air Force operations. The red embattled base bearing a replica of the Alamo is a reference to the group's location and proud Texas military heritage. The dagger with the star, symbol of Texas, is a reminder that the group was the first Air National Guard unit to fly the F-102 "Delta Dagger" aircraft. The honors of the 396th Fighter Squadron are commemorated in the fleur-de-lis denoting World War II Distinguished Unit Citation for action in France, the Taeguk with the caltrap denoting service in the Korean War, and the rope in the colors of the Belgian Fourragere denoting the unit's World War II foreign citations. #Military #Metal #Art #Veteran #VeteranOwned #SmallBuisness #Artwork #Artist #MadeInUSA #MadeInAmerica #America #USA https://www.instagram.com/p/CdwTvcGPqtK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We had the pleasure of hosting the 149th Fighter Wing over the weekend. They were in town for the flyover prior to the Texas Tech football game. The 149th is based out of San Antonio. They are the "Gunslingers" of the Texas Air National Guard. Great guys to be around and help out. #texasairnationalguard #149thfighterwing #gunslingers #f16fightingfalcon #f16c #viper #lubbockinternationalairport #klbb #aviation #aviationphotography #avgeek #planephotography #planespotting #canonphotography #lightroom (at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport - LBB) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3-XHr_ARU3/?igshid=7g3r9sn1ipxo

Check out our newly painted F-16 heritage jet. #ThunderBums The U.S. Air Force F-16 assigned to the 149th Fighter Wing, Texas Air National Guard, painted with World War II hertitage markings sits outside the Air National Guard Paint Facility in Sioux City, Iowa, May 26, 2017. The 149th FW received authorization for the nonstandard markings in order to commemorate the United States Air Force 70th Anniversary. The markings represent the lineage of the 149th FW with the unit's origins dating back to the 396th Fighter Squadron "Thunder Bums" P-47 paint scheme from 1944. (Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Vincent De Groot) Thank you 185th Air Refueling Wing/PA for the photos!
