The Presidential Proclamation 2537 which required that Americans from Germany, Italy or Japan must register with the Department of Defense, was issued on January 14, 1942. Proclamation No. 2537 permitted the arrest, detention and internment of enemy aliens who violated restricted areas, such as ports, water treatment plants or even areas prone to brush fires, for the duration of the war. Roosevelt reluctantly signed Executive Order 9066, which sent many Japanese-American families into internment camps, on February 19, 1942.

Did you participate in a Christmas Bird Count this year? If so, you can thank ornithologist Frank Chapman! In 1900, Chapman established this tradition in hopes that it would counteract the then-common practice of trying to hunt as many birds as possible on Christmas Day.
Chapman worked at the Museum for more than 50 years, from 1888 to 1942. Among his achievements were popularizing birdwatching and bird identification among the general public. There’s still time to participate in this year’s count! Audubon's Christmas Bird Count started on Dec 14, 2023 and ends on January 5, 2024! Let us know which beautiful birds you've seen this holiday season.

Buck + Bucky Timeline Info
For fic writers or just curious readers!
Referencing different archives and articles, I've done my best to compile John and Gale's Air Force timeline pre–England, because I feel like a lot of it gets muddied and sometimes we wanna write pre–MOTA canon events lol. Hope it comes in handy!
They meet (on or around) March 29, 1940 and become Flying Cadets at Randolph Field in Texas until August 30, 1940.
Still Flying Cadets, they move to Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas from September 9, 1940 to November 14, 1940.
Both promoted to 2nd Lieutenant Air Corp Reserve on Nov 15, 1940. A bit unsure on the events before their next promotion, because Gale seems to have gone to Barksdale Army Air Field in LA in March of 1941 for advanced flying school, but haven't found anything on whether John went too; I'm assuming he did.
Both promoted to 1st Lieutenant, Air Corp on April 25, 1942. Not clear on whether this took place in LA or back in Texas or elsewhere.
Became instructors for the 29th Bombardment Group at McDill Air Force Field in Tampa, Florida on May 25, 1942.
Promoted to Captain and transferred to Gowan Field, Boise Idaho, but possibly at different times? All I can find is that by October they were both for sure there, but Gale was promoted to Captain on July 28, 1942 and transferred then, and John was promoted to Captain in August of 1942, but it doesn't specify when he transferred.
At Gowan Field in October of 1942, Gale was promoted to Commanding Officer for the 350th Bomb Squadron/100th Bomb Group, and John was promoted to Operations Officer for the 100th Bomb Group.
Transferred to Walla Walla Army Air Field in Washington in November of 1942.
Transferred to Wendover Army Air Field in Utah in December of 1942.
Both promoted to Majors in Sioux City, Iowa in January of 1943.
Transferred to Kearny, Nebraska (assuming to Kearney Air Force Base) in February of 1943. Cue P1 of MOTA!
In May of 1943, John traveled with an advance party to Podington, England to prepare the base for the 100th Bomb Group. On May 27 1943, Gale (with the 100th) left for Bangor, Maine. From there, he flew out across the Atlantic and arrived at Thorpe Abbotts on June 9 1943. And we know what happens from then on. :-)
If any of this is incorrect or you have extra information to add to the timeline, please let me know!! I wouldn't be surprised if I've missed things, but this is how their flight school/pre–England timeline went to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully this is helpful for some other writers too! I can throw together a timeline for their missions/events during MOTA as well if that's something anyone's interested in; it's easy enough to find mission dates in comparison to finding these pre–100th dates, but it might be nice to have them all in one place. x
#did i realize while making this that i might be a little unhinged? yep! but hopefully this saves others from having to hunt this info down#i took my adhd meds and one minute i was writing the next i was knee deep in mission archives idek how it happened#masters of the air#buckbucky#jls refs#not sure how else to tag this but i just hope it's useful to someone other than myself bc ik i've dug for accurate timelines so much!#(which is funny bc i feel like most of us don't look for inaccuracies while reading yet we're all so picky about our own so)#i actually wrote this a few days ago and completely forgot to post it oops#FUCK i meant air force not army was typing this half asleep and only realized after this started getting reblogs xoxo forgive me

MCU Timeline: Captain America: The First Avenger
March 10, 1917 - James Buchanan Barnes is born.
August 15, 1917 - Howard Anthony Stark is born.
July 4, 1918 - Steven Grant Rogers is born.
April 9, 1919 - Margaret "Peggy" Carter is born.
Why 1919 (deleted scene from The Avengers) and not 1921 (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), as stated in Wikipedia: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not canon for the MCU (events of the show take place in another universe, where Peggy was born in a different year and had a different background).
1934-1936 - young Peggy serves as a nurse in the British Air Force.
1936-1940 - Peggy serves in the Special Air Service.
1940:
Peggy joins the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
Howard founds Stark Industries and becomes its CEO.
May 1941 - Steven Rogers attends a Dodgers vs The Phillies baseball game at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn.
March 1942 - Red Skull invades Norway and extracts the Tesseract.
1942/1943 - The Allies receive a gift from Wakanda: Vibranium. It is given to the SSR's Head Engineer - Howard Stark.
1943:
June 14:
13:50 - Steve gets his last 4F.
And his last beating in the alley a couple of hours later.
Evening - he and Bucky go to the "World Exposition of Tomorrow", where Howard demonstrates his (almost) flying car. Steve meets Dr. Erskine and gets a (falsified) 1A.
June 15:
Sergeant James Barnes heads to Europe with the 107th Infantry Regiment.
Candidate Rogers begins his trial week for Project Rebirth at Camp Lehigh in NJ.
June 21 - Dr. Erskine makes his choice and informs Rogers. They talk about it, about the serum and HYDRA.
June 22, morning - Steve becomes a super soldier. Erskine is killed. The last vial of serum is destroyed.
June 23:
Rogers is offered a position in the USO theater (to help sell war bonds) and receives a (fake) rank of captain.
Night - SSR (including Peggy and Howard) is being retasked to fight HYDRA and goes to London, UK.
July-October - Captain America's US tour (over 200 performances).
November 3rd:
Captain America show in Italy.
Night - Steve goes behind the lines to a HYDRA camp in Austria to rescue Bucky with the help of Peggy and Howard.
November 5th - he returns with 400 (CATFA) or 163 (CATWS) liberated soldiers.
A couple of days later - SSR in London. Based on the locations of HYDRA bases remembered by Rogers, they develop a plan to combat HYDRA. Steve puts together a team.
Marvel Studios' mistake: the medals and badges Steve wears don't make any sense at this particular moment. He simply had neither the time nor the opportunity to earn the Combat Infantry Badge, or the Presidential Unit Citation Badge, nor could he receive the American Defense Service Medal.
Next day, 8 am- Steve meets with Howard and receives his vibranium shield.
1944:
November 1943 - November 1944 - Howling Commandos destroy HYDRA weapons factories.
December 1944 - January 1945 - attack on the train with Dr. Zola. Bucky falls from the train from a great height and is declared killed in action. Zola is captured.
1945:
Soon after, early January - the Valkyrie is finished and ready to attack major US cities. SSR receives information about the location of HYDRA's main base in the Alps and heads there.
Next day - SSR attacks HYDRA's main base. Red Skull teleports to Vormir. The Tesseract is lost in the Arctic Ocean. Crash of the Valkyrie. Steve goes into suspended animation.
After January 1945 - Howard Stark leads expeditions to find Rogers. He finds the Tesseract, but not Captain.
March 23, 1945 - Case №17 is opened. James Barnes "joined" the HYDRA branch in the USSR.
May 8, 1945 - VE-Day.
Spring-Summer 1945 - Howard is involved in the Manhattan Project.
1946:
December 1945/January 1946 - Peggy is assigned to the SSR office in New York.
March 1946 - events of "Agent Carter" one-shot.
2012:
Early 2012 - 67 years later, Steve Rogers is found frozen but alive.
April 2012 - Rogers wakes up in the S.H.I.E.L.D. recovery room in New York City.

The city's old fortress-like prison, the Tombs, was placed on sale by the city in October 1941, and was still looking for bidders when this picture was taken on January 21, 1942. (A new prison, also known as The Tombs, had been built the year before.) Only one offer was made in the 14 weeks since the listing, and the city decided it was too low. It was the bidder’s proposal to use the Tombs as a chamber of horrors and later convert it to an indoor polo field. Eventually it was torn down.

Chapter 1: Prologue (The Prophecy)—A Band of Brothers Fic
A/N: And we're off to the start of a story that is very near and dear to my heart. While this is just a glimpse at the story, I hope that you all enjoy! Updates are set to be every Sunday—just once a week. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think! And let me know if you'd like to join the taglist!
January 1942
The winters of Georgia were never particularly friendly things. Having lived her whole 25 years of life here, Winifred Allen had no such illusions of a white winter being a safe one. No—winter here tended to be icy and when it got icy, people tended to be stupid on the road and then they usually died. There was a reason why all of the schools were shut down going into the second week of January 1942—and it had nothing to do with the impending war efforts.
It seemed to Winnie that the only things that were still running in Buford were the newly appointed factory for munitions (which had been converted from their largest shoe factory to date) and the hospital that she had left not three hours ago. It had been a busy couple of weeks, with men pouring into register for the various branches of the military.
Her own younger brothers had all been a part of that. There were five of them, all her boys, all practically raised by the young woman who felt old at heart. Truth be told, Winnie had been biding her time and she had been waiting. The divorce had finalized back in November. She hadn’t been given a chance to breathe given the fact that her brothers all lived with her and had helped her fight for the house. Then Pearl Harbor had been bombed and each one had signed up as quickly as they could.
Charlie had been the last to go, just an hour prior at the train station. She had watched him leave with a firm expression on her face and the unflinching ability to hold all of her emotions tightly in her chest, as if she were caging them in. Now that he was gone too, there was nothing holding her in Buford.
She had no husband (anymore, anyway), no family left (she certainly didn’t count Dalton Allen as her father and hadn’t counted him as such since she was 14), and no reason to stay.
Winnie dodged a plate to the head and a fury rose up in her chest. Dalton Allen had been a mean drunk since the ripe age of eight when her mother had gone and died while giving birth to Charlie. Since then, Dalton had never held a steady job, never once helped with his own children, and never once been any sort of reliable.
She had come home from the train station to find him sitting on her porch. Winnie had had half a mind to drive away and come back with the police, but she knew that a confrontation such as this was inevitable, as were most things with Dalton Allen.
“Don’t walk away from me, Winifred!” His raspy snarl came out in more of a bark. He was less and less human the older he got.
Moving quickly, Winnie reached into the cabinet and pulled out the shotgun that her brother Richie had insisted that she keep on hand. After how things had ended with her ex-husband, they kept it loaded and easily accessible. Winnie kept a mean expression of fury on her face as she steadied the gun at Dalton’s sweaty head.
Almost immediately, his sunken eyes had widened in total fear. Almost as quickly as the expression had appeared, a look of disbelief had wiped it away. “You won’t—you won’t shoot me.”
“No?” Winnie demanded, taking a step forward. “I think I’ve got a pretty convincing story.”
“Honey—”
Her button safety clicked off and Winnie sneered at the lecherous creature in front of her. “I want you out of my damn house.”
“Your house—”
“Yes. My house. That I bought. With my money. With no help from you.”
“Now Winnie, let’s be reasonable.”
“I’m gonna count to three. And if you’re not gone, I’m shootin’.”
“You—”
Winnie simply moved the gun and fired it to the right. “One!”
Within seconds, Dalton Allen had shrunken back in total fear. His eyes had flashed at the sound and he had turned tail to run. She knew what he was. She knew that he was a coward. She knew that he had been brave once, but she had never known that man. And right now, all Winnie Allen wanted to do was get him the hell out of her house so that she could get the hell out of her house.
After all, she had a train to Toccoa to catch. And a training position as a Doctor to fulfill. Watching as he fled into the cold air, Winnie lowered the gun slowly and let out a heavy breath. Her heart was still pounding rapidly and she could hear the rush of blood in her ears. For a moment, it felt as though all of her limbs were weighed down in water.
And then she moved, slowly reaching the door and locking it.
“I’ve gotta get the hell outta here,” Winnie breathed out tiredly.

USS California (BB-44) on January 26, 1942. Salvage workers have removed her 14 inch guns to lighten the battleship in preparation to refloat and tow her to the drydock for repairs.
"USS California was struck by two torpedoes and one bomb. Near-miss damage resulted from a second bomb and minor damage was caused by a third. Minor fragmentation damage resulted from bombs at a distance. There was one fire aboard as a result of the bomb hit. About two hours after the start of the attack a surface oil fire completely enveloped the vessel. Finally, a vapor explosion occurred forward just prior to completion of salvage operations. The vessel sank slowly and did not approach the final position in the mud until late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning."

Gunvor Hofmo (b. 30 June 1921 Oslo/Kristiania - d. 14 October 1995, Oslo) was a Norwegian writer considered among the country's most significant modernist poets. She eventually was named "Mørkets sangerske / songstress of darkness", being one of the leading poets of the post-war period, the horrors of the war and the loss of her Jewish lover Ruth Maier left a deep mark on the majority of her writing.
P.1: Gunvor Hofmo P.2: Gunvor Hofmo & Ruth Maier
Hofmo was only 19 when the war broke out, and several of her relatives were imprisoned or killed by the Germans. But perhaps the biggest loss was her lover, Ruth Maier, an Austrian Jewish woman born in 1920, who came to Norway as a refugee in 1939. A year later Hofmo met Maier at a voluntary work service at Biristrand, both being fond of writing, they quickly became friends. Eventually the two women became lovers and they traveled around Norway together, working from place to place, until they returned to Oslo sometime in 1942.
Ruth was arrested and sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp together with 532 other Norwegian Jews on the transport ship Danube on 26 November 1942. Gunvor followed her girlfriend to the dock and never heard from her again. Maier died 1. December 1942 in Auschwitz.
P. 1&2: Ruth Maier
Ruth wrote several diaries that Hofmo kept after her death. She made attempts to publish them in the post war period, but it was only after her passing in 1995 that Ruth Maier's diaries were discovered and later published in 2007.
The topic of homosexuality plays a role several times in her diaries, already at the age of thirteen, Ruth discussed same-sex love and desire with a friend in Vienna but was happy when she could push the subject away: "I think about how horrible it was when I went and thought about it. I looked it up in the encyclopedia. I asked Mutz [Ruth Maier's mother] too, but she said it's the kind of thing I don't understand. Thank God it's over now. Yes , if you don't have problems, you get them!" Later, after she had gotten to know Gunvor Hofmo in Norway, she would return to the topic.
Unlike Gunvor Hofmo, it is not easy to decide whether Ruth Maier was a lesbian or not, but her love for her was clear, she wrote of Hofmo in her diary several times:
In January 1941, she wrote: "Gunvor's eyes are dark blue. They are bottomless. […] The days are brighter when you love someone." In the autumn of the same year, she admitted that she could not imagine life without Gunvor.
Again in 1941, "I can't say how warm I feel with Gunvor. I love her deep eyes. I love her reserved way of talking about things. Gunvor is a valuable human being. I would sacrifice a lot to make her happy."
In her diary after Maier was admitted to Ullevål Hospital in Oslo after a nervous breakdown, the doctors asked her about her feelings for Gunvor Hofmo as well. In her diary, she noted: "I can't do anything for that I feel so deeply for her. The doctors must have thought that I in this regard have an unnatural inclination. That is not the case. What I feel for her is completely natural. I feel spiritually connected to her. There is not the slightest hint of physical lust in me. But it may be that I have a need for love that requires its expression, where Gunvor is a (dear)welcome object."
Gunvor Hofmo and her girlfriend Ruth Maier
After the war, in 1946, Gunvor Hofmo published her first collection of poems: Jeg vil hjem til menneskene / I want to go home to the humans.
It is here that we find the iconic post-war poem "Det er ingen hverdag mer / There is no everyday anymore":
God, if you still see: There is no everyday anymore. There is just silent screams, there is just black corpses that hang in red trees! Hear how quiet it is. We turn to go home but we always meet them. Everything we sense one day is the breath of the killed! If we in hiding go: it is their ashes that we tread. God, if you still see: There is no everyday anymore.
In the debut collection, as in all of Hofmo's later releases, it was grief and suffering that stood at the center.
In the post-war period, she was to become a long-term patient at Gaustad Hospital in Oslo. Doctors diagnosed her with "schizophrenia, paranoid form" in 1954. She was there for shorter and longer periods for 22 years - until she was discharged in 1975. Before and after this period, she produced a large number of poetry collections.
Just before she was admitted to Gaustad, she wrote one of her most famous poems, Jeg har våket / I have awakened. The last part of the poem, about Maier:
... I saw my friend, the only one, I saw her go to die. And since the trees have mourned, and since then Death has drawn my body and soul and voice into the sea of despair!
In 1947, Hofmo began a long term relationship with Astrid Tollefsen (1897-1973) and became one of the first Norwegians living in an openly lesbian relationship. They continued to live and travel together until Hofmo was incapacitated and committed to Gaustad for her illness.
Afterwards there was a period of 16 years silence where she published no new work until she broke her silence with the collection 'Gjest på jorden / Guest on earth' in 1971.
She lived an anonymous life in the capital city, refusing to be interviewed nor did she read her work aloud. Her last years spent mostly in solitude and isolation apart from a few friends who were allowed in. She died suddenly in October 1995, debilitated by diabetes with which she had been struggling for a couple of years.
Hofmos work was little translated during her lifetime. And there seems to be no official translated works in English. (The poems you see on this post have been translated by me.)
