for some reason seeing the rex and cal interaction ask immediately made an au pop into my brain of like. the end of the clone wars but Cal's whole ship has their chips malfunction so it just turns into "oh no. guess we all have to pretend to crash and then take this whole perfectly fine battle cruiser and go into hiding. oh nooooo"

Cadet Commander Kestis left an… impression on the Alpha Class when the 13th Battalion stocked up on a supply run to Kamino. His Commander is debating whether he should have bothered trying to keep the Cadet in arms length. It probably wouldn’t have helped.
(Alpha 17 will never forget the strange Jetii Cadet that apologised to a door. He thinks about it when the Cadets he trains are being strange. It gives him comfort, and a strange fascination with the happenings of Jetii Cadets.)

Random clone and padawan headcanons
I will die on the hill that every padawan was extremely connected to/close with their clone battalion
Certain clones have closer bonds, but every clone trooper saw anywhere from a child to barely teenager standing in front of them on their Venator and went “protective instincts initiated”
Ahsoka and the 501st are the closest only because Anakin encouraged they interact with the men as if they were troopers and not their commanding officers whenever not in a professional setting (think missions camps, off duty, in transit to missions). This helped Ahsoka acclimate because it reminded her of the crèche days and the bond she formed with her crèche mates
With that said, Rex was fondest of Ahsoka (big bro mode activated double time when he saw a child standing in front of him) but she and Fives together were his biggest headache
Cal was a babay when the war started so the 13th battalion, yes respected him as their commander, but their relationship was much more "little bro surrounded by 100s of big bros" (with how young Cal was, I firmly believe he rarely saw the field)
Cal loved to watch the clones train, and once and awhile they'd let him join in on their sparring. Due to the fact he was maybe 100lbs wet, they'd go easy on him, but it was the highlight of Cal's day
Caleb/Kanan wanted to be the cool commander so badly. Like so so so so badly. During down time, you'd find him in the mess hall with a group of clones around him while he told what he thought were his coolest stories or about all the cool things he's done on Coruscant (Depa Billaba would never admit it, but she enjoyed coming to the mess during these times and oh so casually correcting an over-embellishment of Caleb's like oh interesting she doesn't remember him pulling off a double flip she remembers him face planting in the temple fountains, but maybe that was another time. Caleb gives her the "mom stop embarrassing me in front of my friends" look and she laughs to herself as she walks away)
To help pass the time while Jaro was leading a campaign on the ground and Cal was on the Venator, Cal and the clones not involved in the battle would play a version of hide-and-seek. One time Jaro came back from the battle to a bunch of sheepish clones admitting they had no idea where his padawan was after they'd been seeking for him for over an hour. That's when they learned Cal can fit into spaces previously thought only a mouse could access
Ahsoka was a very curious teenager who loved to learn. Much to Rex's chagrin. After Christophsis, back on the Resolute on their way back to Coruscant which was a day or so journey, Ahsoka followed Rex around asking a million questions about life on Kamino, their training, what it was like growing up surrounded by the same face, who his favorite trooper was, who his favorite Jedi was, what his least favorite part of the ship was, etc.

"What were things like, back then?"
"...Better than they are now."
hahaha finally got around to drawing Ace squadron! rex deserved a batch and i had perfectly good clone commanders who needed one, too, and they all fit together in the most dysfunctional way possible.
By the end of the war only the two corries are still in regular contact by nature of being twins and stationed together. Its...hard on everyone, but they're all stubborn and no one is ready to admit maybe they fucked up.
Left to right: Karma of the 13th Batallion, Dizzy of the Coruscant Guard, Lily of the 77th Batallion, Queenie or Queen of the Coruscant Guard, and Rex
Doing phase 1 armor designs was fun, everyone changed just a little bit except for the Corries who changed a Lot in comparison. Clone armor is so fun.

Baby Cal and one of the 13th Battalion troopers!
I love Fallen Order and I love the 13th Battalion so I have a few characters for them one of which being this boy named Stowaway!
I remember the episode of clone wars where the senate wanted more clone troopers and (I think this happened) they talked about where troopers would be sent out younger than normal

Young Cal absolutely KILLS me.
He was with Master Tapal when the older spoke to Anakin, shortly after the latter became a Knight.
He is described as precocious 😭 because of how he rarely struggled, but he was also kind and generous. He couldn’t deal with failure and that was the whole reason why he was assigned to Master Tapal.
He froze when he saw a droideka out on the battlefield and his Master had to save him.
He was close with his clones, high-fived them and even had a rematch planned with one of them (which implied he regularly played games with them).
Master Tapal made him run drills of escaping through the maintenance shafts.
He trusted his Master until the end.
We need more fun so I’ve got little headcanons for him:
He didn’t like tea until Master Tapal got him drinking it. He more so enjoyed the comfort it brought and the memories of his Master than the actual experience but he still liked experimenting with the different flavours. His favourite is one of Master Tapal’s blends from Lasan.
This is precisely why he doesn’t like tea now. It reminds him of too much, but he’ll drink it for Greez if the other wants him to. The comfort the Latero brings reminds Cal of something he used to have.
He kept a collection of trinkets with good echoes around his room. One of them is the holocron he keeps near his bed.
His blanket was a lifeday gift from the battalion, handmade.
He was still scared of the dark even one year into his apprenticeship. A mission gone wrong where he was stranded on an unsafe ship and had to use the dark to hide in quickly cured him of this though.
He still had a soft toy to sleep with, even just before order 66. He often hid it in a secret compartment in his room because he felt like he should be over that attachment, but later future Cal still wishes he had it to bring him comfort.
He particularly liked adding beads and strings he found on missions to his braid, decorating it not only with accomplishments but also echoes from jobs well done.
He was incredibly flexible and also incredibly energetic. It was tough to get him to sit still, let alone not to race off and start climbing everything he saw. Master Tapal had to teach him not to run off very quickly into their apprenticeship, but he never quite cured him of the latter habit.
Another habit Cal was never cured of was his curiosity, leading him to sneak around exploring places a lot and touching echoes he really shouldn’t have.
He really didn’t like needles or medbays. He would never go near either on his apprenticeship, but this aversion was quickly cured on the uncaring planet Bracca.
He actually had to be told by Master Tapal to stop giving everything he owned as gifts to everyone on board since his quarters were becoming quite bare. Cal did so anyways because he liked giving gifts and making others happy.
He let the clones paint his face in the battalion’s colours once and refused to wash it off for hours.
He had to get a rabies shot one time because he insisted on helping an animal that ended up biting him. He doesn’t regret it for a second though.
He made a little scrapbook of all the clones, what their Force signatures looked like and their names so that he could remember who was who even with the helmets on. He knew exactly who shot at him and who died by his Master’s hands after order 66.
Idk man.. this guy. This tiny little guy. He makes me very sad.

Psst!! HEY! If you want more of this kind of mushy stuff about Padawan Cal, maybe you should check out my fanfic… it’s literally the escapades of Cal and his clones except with a little Diathim twist..

I am SO pleased that people are in support of my Jaro Tapal/Commander Bacara agenda. if you brought it up in the comments of my blyla fic and apologised there is no need, people getting excited over my intentionally placing references to this ship in any story I can get away with it pleases me greatly
those men need to be wrecked by each other. there is nothing better than stoic, conscientious men losing all composure as they become embroiled in a highly romantic consensual workplace relationship with loads of gratuitous fucking
Commander Tooka of the 13th battalion is so annoyed over the relationship. mostly because Bacara told Jaro his name after a whole damn year of him successfully keeping it a secret from his very serious General. In Bacara’s defence his brain was completely melted after getting reamed by lasat dick, which really is its own mitigating circumstance.
Cal isn’t sure what to feel about Bacara being with his Master, but Master Vos had sent him a flimsy booklet entitled ‘A Psychometric Padawan’s Guide on How to Deal With Having a Master in a Responsible, Unattached Jedi Partnership Without Scarring Yourself for Life’ which has been very helpful.
(Quinlan made him a few little booklets, he makes them physical copies so that he can imbue them with lessons psychometrically, it’s a Kiffar teaching practice.)

The blanket Cal has in his room during the order 66 flashbacks matches the colours of the battalion he’s with so picture for me: a group of battle-hardened super soldiers using the precious little time they have between battles to make a simple blanket to sleep with at night as a gift for their 12 year old commander. They make it their battalion colours because they want him to know he’s one of them.

Hi!!!! Brain Gremlins are attacking me today and now I have ideas that I can't draw For the l4j time-travel AU, is it before or during the Clone Wars? If it's during, how do the Clones react to Cal and Ahsoka being suddenly Old?
Tumblr media
yeah there's a real difference in reactions:

Something something, the Jedi and the Clones would have grieved together, something something, their traditions would have become symbiotic, something something, over three million prayers to the force by force nulls who respected their beliefs would have galvanised those who could feel their faith, something something, the inherent tragedy of loving the people around you, knowing you and them could die anytime, something something.
-
I’m normal about the Jedi and the Clones, I promise.
This was originally for the No Order 66 AU with Cal and his Battalion, but it made me feel too much when I finished it.
There is something about a peace keeping warrior order coming to love their soldiers, who in turn, come to respect and admire them. There’s just something so cathartic about that bond, that mutual struggle for a Galaxy that wants or respects neither people, that just feels so….
Ugh, you know?
