Replacing the preamp tubes went well, and the reverb works again. I think my reverb tank might be a little finicky/on its way out though, I had to shake it a few times to get it to work (sometimes the springs get a little stuck) I might have to keep an eye on it). I also get a bit more use of the volume knob with the 12AY7 in there in place of a 12AX7. I can comfortably turn the volume up a little past the four in this room, with the stock 12AX7 in there, a little past four was when things on the nearby bookshelf started vibrating and the floor started shaking.

Having a different tube in the V2 socket really altered the amp's sound. It's a little fuller, a little less brittle in the high bands, and I'm hearing more overtone harmonics in the sustain. I wish it captured better on this shitty phone mic, by the audio processing compresses it all to hell. Trust me that it sounds way better in person.

Please excuse my sloppy playing here, I just wanted to see if the tubes were working and was on like one knee in a very awkward pose for guitar playing. Please also excuse the terrible sound of my voice.

THE BROTHERS GONNA WORK IT OUT!This week for Distortion Ltd I rocked out through the Locomotive TUBE Overdrive from Crazy Tube Circuits, these guys are a company based in Greece. I want to go there!Built around my favorite (mini) preamp tube... The 12AY7. From subtle saturation to full throttle overdrive, a very powerful little box.Musically this week I threw together some old school "big beat" with some Chemical Brothers samples and and a sweet neo-soul vibe based on a Jose James tune.

This microphone is a pain in the ass. It's a Rode Tube Classic and when it's working, it sounds really nice. The problem is, it's rarely working. It's from the mic collection at Soundpark Studios and it had been on the cut list for while now. I had sent it away a few years ago when it was exhibiting a whooshing - sea like noise rather regularly. It came back with a NOS GE 6072A which cost more money that I would like to pay for a tube. I get the whole NOS tube thing, but I find it hard to believe that none of the current production companies are not making tubes as good as these NOS jobs. Scoff a little, it's okay. I guess you folks that can afford to pay $100 or $1,000 per NOS item can be the ones to tell us that they sound better. Sure.

Anyway, the thing worked for a a brief period with no audible noise and then before too long back came the whooshing ocean. I ordered a JJ 12AY7 and replace the tube, which wasn't the most intuitive operation. Anyway, worked for a while and the same thing. Bummer.

I have been reading a fair bit about these mics but there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution. I read recently on the Electrical Audio tech journal that sometimes that sound can be caused by a variation or issue with the filament supply. I will check that. A few years ago I made up a BOM for a recap for the power supply. I think if I remember correctly that the PSU was built in 1995 or 1997. Don't quote me on that one. However it could probably benefit from having it recapped and bench tested. I haven't made this one a priority yet but soon enough.

Nice, the replacement preamp tubes came. I think I'll wait until tomorrow to plug 'em into my amp and test them out. I bought two 12AT7/ECC 81 tubes and a 12AY7/6072. I need to pull the 12AT7 in the V3 socket which controls the reverb driver. Then in the V2 socket I want to swap out the 12AX7 with either a 12AT7 or 12AY7. The V2 controls the primary gain stage for the second channel, and the 12AT7 and 12AY7 have 60% and 40% of the gain factor of the 12AX7, which results in perceivable input volume decrease of 40-60%. This is a really common modification people make to Fender amps, it just helps tame the volume in smaller spaces and lets the amp "break-up" without having to crank it to "will give you permanent hearing damage" volumes. Stevie Ray Vaughan did it to his amps. Gonna be a fun little experiment, trip report forthcoming, but I'm going to leave it to tomorrow because, wow, I am really out of it this afternoon and I'm going to go lay down.

So here is how I wasted my afternoon/evening rather than do any of the things I actually wanted to do (vacuum room, actually play my guitar, maybe play Elden Ring for a bit). No instead I sketched out possible signal chain routes and figured out power requirements for hypothetical additions to my pedalboard which I cannot presently afford, and in the case of the "would be nices" will not be able to afford for a very long time. I also read up on switching out preamp tubes; if I swapped out the 12AX7A tube in the V2 position for a 5751 or a 12AY7 I could reduce the input gain 30-40% and that would bring the output volume of the amp down to actually manageable levels more appropriate for use in my bedroom. As it is with the 12AX7A, I can barely move the volume knob up past 1. But a decent RCA 5751 or GE 6072 (12AY7) are priced anywhere from $80 to $150 on eBay. Again not something I can afford.
