Famous Five Art Nostalgia â Character Portrait: George [Claude]
Introductory post
Masterpost
Character profile (adapted from Wikipedia):
George is a tomboy, who demands that people call her George instead of Georgina; she cuts her hair very short and dresses like a boy. She is headstrong and courageous by nature and, like her father, has a hot and fiery temper. Introduced to the other characters in the first book, she later attends a boarding school with Anne. George has a loyal dog named Timmy who would do anything for her. She often gets cross when anyone calls her by her birth name or makes fun of Timmy, and she loves it when somebody calls her George or mistakes her for a boy.
In Claude Voilierâs continuation series âLes Cinqâ, George takes an even more prominent role and is very clearly the appointed leader of the Five, superseding Julianâs position from the original series. Her boldness borders recklessness, and most of her endeavours, however risky, are rewarded with success. Like in the original series she is often taken for a boy and she enjoys it, but sheâs also oddly quick to correct people by saying sheâs actually a girl whenever this happens.

Every JA DOOL Scene
Timestamps for @jarchaeology DOOL videos
I started this in January and decided it would be selfish of me not to share my notes. Donât ask where I found the time.Â
This is for all those jackles gif makers out there or those of you who wanna skip through DOOLs drama and literally insane plot lines.Â
Please let me know if you find any mistakes! I will be updating the list as I complete each season.
My personal favorite episodes are in bold. Usually episodes where Eric Brady is such a boyfriend. Enjoy. <3

Journal Entry
07 December 2020
Quezon City, Philippines
I just realized why even how many times Iâve been to the Great Wall and even how really difficult it is to walk/climb on it, Iâd still go back if and when given the opportunity. After reminiscing a very happy memory of something that happened over 2 decades ago, I was able to recall the details. I presented the Great Wall model we made for Asian History class and was tasked to share its story during the exhibit. It may be something I am unaware of before but since our experiences form part of our subconscious, then I suppose that moment, including all of the details, got buried deep in my mind and somehow influence my likings.
Actually 12/7/1999 isnât really the highlight of what made it significant. It was only the beginning of a new learning for me. But the succeeding events probably wouldnât have happened if it didnât.
I am sincerely thankful for that day and for the crazy freshie who teased me non-stop that made me somehow turn what I was teased about become true later on. And of course I am ever grateful most especially to his companion who taught me things beyond books and allowing me to feel emotions I havenât felt before then, all of which probably without him even knowing.
I may never really find out his true intentions for his actions after our first meet, but I would never trade that experience. I know and admit Iâve made some mistakes after and never really get to sincerely apologize about it. What I felt may just be in my imagination or my own interpretation of his actions, but Iâd rather have it that way so Iâd have a sweet souvenir of my High School years.
And most of all, am still thankful I get to converse with him occasionally even as friends only. I guess itâs true what the song lines say, first love never dies. It may not be the same level of affection like before but its remnants bring the same kind of feeling every time I walk down memory lane.

Comparison between the teaching of English (from early beginnings) in Chile with a country where English is not their mother tongue
A brief review of the history of teaching foreign languages ââin Chile.
Its beginnings go back to the year 1813, year in which a local newspaper publishes a notice asking a person to teach English and French "if there were any who wanted to teach English and French with the endowment of 500 pesos, notify any individual of the Board of Education. " In addition, it coincides with the inauguration of the National Institute, that same year, where English, French and Italian were included in the curriculum for communication purposes in the literary and civil spheres of an incipient society that needed to prepare emissaries, merchants and travelers, mainly to Travel to Europa. (FarĂas, 1999; Vera, 1942).
In 1889, the Pedagogical Institute was founded and the first curriculum for English was designed by Dr. Rodolfo Lenz in 1893; Its objectives included reading and understanding of modern authors, conversations about daily life and writing âwithout serious mistakesâ.
Due to reforms to the educational system since the 1960s, this progress is slowed down, by the creation of a new university entrance test; the Academic Aptitude Test in 1967 that excluded foreign languages, later the Academic Aptitude Test (PAA) is replaced by the University Selection Test (PSU) in 2004, in which foreign languages ââwere also not incorporated.
During the Pinochet dictatorship, Pedagogies were not included as a university profession, other influential factors were the privatization of schools and an educational policy that left foreign languages ââas optional in the national curriculum (FarĂas 1999). In 1998 with a new reform of the educational system, English is compulsory for seventh and eighth grade years and years of secondary education. During the year 2004, the Ministry of Education created the English Open Doors Program with the initial ambition of having bilingual students by 2018.
Various specialists have described that the acquisition of a second language is an important factor for the development of skills and creativity since childhood. This is why the Ministry of Education in most countries has put English with a compulsory subject in early childhood education.
In Chile
During 2017, the low level of English of Chileans came to light, thanks to statistics such as the one generated by the English First (EF) group. The focus is on the bad pronunciation and the little that is spoken in English, diverse are the motives of the Chilean idiosyncrasy, which is mostly generated by the shyness of the population. Despite this, the population believes that, if a new language is integrated from the beginning of education, their learning will be easier and their acquisition fluid. That is why the schools and kindergartens that offer this option as a âplusâ have proliferated, although the teaching of English is mandatory in the public system only from the 5th grade.
Teaching English in Chile meets two barriers, the impact of public education, in which it is compulsory from the fifth grade and the second is from those who are responsible for teaching this second language. Universities require only a medium level of language proficiency for entry to the degree, and this is how during the 5-year period, future professors not only have to acquire pedagogical and didactic tools, but also improve their skills and Fluency in a language that does not dominate proficiently before.
If we take the first barrier with the main axis, we realize that the private education system better prepares its students since there is an early stimulation of the English language, which, depending on the orientation of the school, can even begin at levels of transition, that is, in preschool education. On the other hand, the situation of public education and its obligatory nature from the 5th grade, loses a fundamental quality that is in full development during early childhood, which is the plasticity of the brain, which allows a better acquisition of language. This is also the case for those who are harmed, children who attend rural schools, since their social context in which English teachers and nursery educators are not trained or have the necessary teaching material to teach a good class. Thus, the social disadvantage faced by children who begin with a level of null or deficient English, in their journey through a globalized world that demands more linguistic and language skills every day, is enormous.
What is the situation in other countries?
As an example we will take Finland.
Finland is one of the most technologically advanced countries in Europe, and its inhabitants have a very good command of this language. Finland is famous for its education, since Finnish schools have been in the number one educational ranking for years. The studies categorize Finnish as one of the most difficult languages ââto learn so Finns know that if they want to communicate they must study English, for this reason it is one of the European countries that best speak English. Thanks to their excellent educational system, children learn English from an early age and are continually exposed to cultural products from Anglo-Saxon countries.
In Finland, students start with their mother tongue and Finnish, subsequently learn English and even a second foreign language.
According to the director of this public school Saunalahti School listed as the best in the world, Hannah Sarakorpi, "In Finland English is present in everything: on television, in the cinema with subtitles ... we listen constantly," he says.
The result, that the population is practically competent in this language, despite the fact that their learning does not begin until 9 years. Schooling begins at age 6, at which time the schoolchildren of this school begin learning Finnish, the official language of the country (in other schools it is Swedish).
Even so, Finland considers it important to strengthen the mother tongue as a basis for learning the rest of the languages. After the introduction of English, the study of Swedish begins at 12, as it is also considered mandatory language. At Saunalahti School, there is also the option to choose between Spanish or German from the age of 10.

It is not âpunishmentâ in the common sense of the word,[40] and does not mean physical or psychological harm and most certainly does not mean abuse. Punishment simply involves the presentation of an undesired consequence (positive punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as a snap of the leash, or the removal of a desired consequence (negative punishment) when the wrong behavior is performed, such as the trainer eating the cheese that would have been the reward.[41] A behavior that has previously been developed may cease if reinforcement stops; this is called extinction. A dog that paws its owner for attention will eventually stop if it no longer receives attention.[42] 4,359 people like this Jockey Webdesign For Job Opportunities at the Guard Dog Training Centre Sydney, please go to our Job Opportunities page for all the information. The demonstration of the detour by humans significantly improved the dogsâ performance in the trials. The experiments showed that dogs are able to rely on information provided by human action when confronted with a new task. Significantly, they did not copy the exact path of the human demonstrator, but adopted the detour behavior shown by humans to reach their goal.[55] A 1977 experiment by Adler and Adler found that puppies who watched other puppies learn to pull a food cart into their cages by an attached ribbon proved considerably faster at the task when later given the opportunity themselves. Episode number one: Bang-Bangsgiving Dinner.
[00:01:05]Â
Stephen & Linda Privacky were a well-respected couple who lived with their two teenage sons in Muskeegan, Michigan. Their plans on Sunday, November 29th, 1998 were pretty simple: have over the boys' grandfather plus their older son's girlfriend to have a belated Thanksgiving dinner together a few days after the holiday.Â
[00:01:23]
Stephen Privacky was a well-liked elementary school teacher; his wife, Linda, worked the front office for a doctor in town. Their nineteen-year-old son Jed and his nineteen-year-old girlfriend Amber Boss were both studying in college to become teachers.
[00:01:39]
Their younger son, Seth Privacky, was a high school senior at Reeths-Puffer High School in Muskeegan, Michigan. By his own admission, Seth had been having a pretty hard previous twelve months. He'd been arrested two times for shoplifting, once for beer and once for a CD. He was prescribed Wellbutrin, required to take counseling, and sentenced to 10 days in a juvenile facility.
[00:02:01]
On the day of the crime, Sunday, November 29th, Seth states that his father told him that he didn't love him anymore and that he wanted him to move out of the family home. His mother, Linda, and his older brother Jed did nothing to intervene on his behalf. And so when his dad leaves to pick up their grandfather and his mom goes upstairs to take a shower, Seth also goes upstairs, but he comes downstairs with a loaded 22 Ruger pistol belonging to his father. He goes into the adjacent room where Jed is watching TV and waiting for his girlfriend Amber to arrive for Thanksgiving Dinner and Seth then shoots his brother, Jed, once in the head. He moves his body downstairs to the basement to conceal it and goes to the garage to wait for his father and grandfather to return.Â
[00:02:48]
Once they do, he shoots his dad once and his grandfather twice. He then goes upstairs and shoots his mother Linda as she exits the shower. Once downstairs again, he starts moving the bodies of his dad and grandpa from the garage into the house and this is where Amber enters and is startled by what she sees. He then shoots Amber in the head as well.Â
[00:03:12]
Unbelievably, his next move is to call up a high school buddy, 18-year-old Steven Clayton Wallace, also a senior at Reeths-Puffer High School in Muskeegan, Michigan. He tells him what went down and asks him to come over and help and, also unbelievably, Steven Wallace agrees. Steven Wallace goes to the Privacky crime scene and proceeds to help his friend Seth cover up the murders of four of his family members and his brother's girlfriend. He wraps bodies and they make plans to bury them later, but first Steven does need to go to a function at his church. So he leaves, he takes with him the murder weapon and disposes of it in a nearby lake.Â
[00:03:51]
Seth proceeds to mop up blood at the crime scene for the next few hours, takes the bullet casings to a public trash can and disposes of them, and purchases duct tape so they can now stage the crime scene as an attempted robbery.Â
[00:04:07]
During Seth Privacky's police interview, he tells officers that his dad told him he didn't love him and that he wanted him to move out of the house. He killed his mom and his brother because they didn't intervene on his behalf. He killed his grandfather and his brother's girlfriend because he didn't know they were going to be there.Â
[00:04:27]
Detectives reported that he had a very flat affect and that he seemed vacant behind his eyes, as if nobody was home. He showed no remorse, he didn't apologize to the victims, the victims' families or friends or anything of that nature. And even ten years later, when he wrote a testimonial letter claiming to show his path to Christianity, he really did everything he could to place his emphasis of blame on his victims.Â
[00:04:59]
Now to shed some light into how it was reported that his parents felt about him, several of their friends did have a few insights into the relationship that he had with his parents. For instance, his mother Linda had told friends that she felt Seth was completely out of control and that he had taken to destroying property within the family home. His father Stephen went so far as to say that he felt his son Seth had no conscience.Â
[00:05:30]
So in the summer of 1999, Seth Privacky was found guilty of five counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.Â
[00:05:42]
Steven Wallace's charges were downgraded to five counts of accessory to murder, of which he was acquitted. Now it turns out that on the night of the Privacky family murders, Steven Wallace did go to church, he did dispose of the murder weapon, and evidently he also had time during that night, before returning to the crime scene to help his friend dispose of those bodies and evidence, to joyride with some other teens and bust mailboxes throughout the neighborhood.Â
[00:06:16]
His next criminal citation would be misdemeanor vandalism wherein he would actually enter the criminal justice system. Over the next couple years, he had multiple arrests for things such as vandalism and domestic violence and ultimately trafficking stolen property. In 2007, he violated probation on that stolen property charge and was sentenced to up to 7.5 years in prison, and he was released on May 29th, 2014.
[00:06:51]
Seth Privacky claimed that, shortly after entering the justice system, he converted to Christianity. Even though he claimed to now be a Christian, he still did manage to accrue over 29 misconducts on his prison record for offenses including possession of a weapon, assault, gambling, fighting, substance abuse, possession of a tattoo gun. By his own accounts, he went so far as to extort money from other prisoners as well as deal drugs while behind bars.Â
[00:07:26]
By 2010, Seth Privacky was 30 years old and being housed at Kinross Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, Michigan. On July 15th, 2010, around 9:15 AM, three inmates, including Seth Privacky, attempted to hijack a work truck that was on prison grounds performing some work around the facility. They overpowered the driver, but the truck eventually became hung up on something after crashing through a double fence, and Seth attempted to flee on foot. He was shot dead by a perimeter prison guard.Â
[00:07:59]
About twelve years after massacring his mother, father, grandfather, brother and his brother's girlfriend as they sat down to Thanksgiving dinner, Seth Privacky was dead.
[00:08:11]
In a sad, but unrelated, twist in the life of Steven Wallace, the co-conspirator, in 2009, the body of his two children's mother, Andrea Mura, was found frozen along a road in Michigan. She'd evidently walked away from a work detail after being incarcerated for retail fraud and it was later found during autopsy that she had died of lethal heroin overdose.Â
[00:08:38]
I couldn't find any word on whether or not Steven Wallace received custody of the two children that they shared together.Â
[00:08:47]
The previous domestic violence that Steven Wallace had been convicted of were all perpetrated against Andrea Mura.

[00:08:58]
Let's meet back here next week for another heartbreaking story of Murderous Minors: Killer Kids.

Government Carries Out First Federal Execution in 17 Years
Two men stood beside him in the execution chamber, a U.S. Marshal and a spiritual adviser, whom the Bureau of Prisons referred to as an âAppalachian pagan minister.â Neither wore a mask.
âI didnât do it,â Mr. Lee said, according to a report from journalists who were at the scene. âIâve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but Iâm not a murderer.â He claimed the judge in his trial in Arkansas overlooked DNA evidence that proved he was across the country at the time of the murders.
After a senior bureau official told him that he was to be put to death, Mr. Lee shook his head. As the drug was administered to his veins, he raised his head to look around. Then his breaths became heavy. In just a few short moments, his chest remained still, his lips turned blue, and his fingers became ashy. He was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m.
The federal government is scheduled to carry out two more executions this week. A court has issued a temporary stay in the case of Wesley Ira Purkey, 68, whom the Justice Department scheduled for execution on Wednesday for the 1998 killing and dismembering of a teenage girl in Kansas City.
Dustin Lee Honken, 52, convicted of killing three adults and two young girls in 1993, will be executed on Friday, barring any last-minute stays. Another prisoner, Keith Dwayne Nelson, 46, will face execution in August for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in 1999.

Is the coronavirus airborne?
The coronavirus can stay aloft for hours in tiny droplets in stagnant air, infecting people as they inhale, mounting scientific evidence suggests. This risk is highest in crowded indoor spaces with poor ventilation, and may help explain super-spreading events reported in meatpacking plants, churches and restaurants. Itâs unclear how often the virus is spread via these tiny droplets, or aerosols, compared with larger droplets that are expelled when a sick person coughs or sneezes, or transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces, said Linsey Marr, an aerosol expert at Virginia Tech. Aerosols are released even when a person without symptoms exhales, talks or sings, according to Dr. Marr and more than 200 other experts, who have outlined the evidence in an open letter to the World Health Organization.
What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
Common symptoms include fever, a dry cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Some of these symptoms overlap with those of the flu, making detection difficult, but runny noses and stuffy sinuses are less common. The C.D.C. has also added chills, muscle pain, sore throat, headache and a new loss of the sense of taste or smell as symptoms to look out for. Most people fall ill five to seven days after exposure, but symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days.
Is it harder to exercise while wearing a mask?
A commentary published this month on the website of the British Journal of Sports Medicine points out that covering your face during exercise âcomes with issues of potential breathing restriction and discomfortâ and requires âbalancing benefits versus possible adverse events.â Masks do alter exercise, says Cedric X. Bryant, the president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise, a nonprofit organization that funds exercise research and certifies fitness professionals. âIn my personal experience,â he says, âheart rates are higher at the same relative intensity when you wear a mask.â Some people also could experience lightheadedness during familiar workouts while masked, says Len Kravitz, a professor of exercise science at the University of New Mexico.
Iâve heard about a treatment called dexamethasone. Does it work?
The steroid, dexamethasone, is the first treatment shown to reduce mortality in severely ill patients, according to scientists in Britain. The drug appears to reduce inflammation caused by the immune system, protecting the tissues. In the study, dexamethasone reduced deaths of patients on ventilators by one-third, and deaths of patients on oxygen by one-fifth.
What is pandemic paid leave?
The coronavirus emergency relief package gives many American workers paid leave if they need to take time off because of the virus. It gives qualified workers two weeks of paid sick leave if they are ill, quarantined or seeking diagnosis or preventive care for coronavirus, or if they are caring for sick family members. It gives 12 weeks of paid leave to people caring for children whose schools are closed or whose child care provider is unavailable because of the coronavirus. It is the first time the United States has had widespread federally mandated paid leave, and includes people who donât typically get such benefits, like part-time and gig economy workers. But the measure excludes at least half of private-sector workers, including those at the countryâs largest employers, and gives small employers significant leeway to deny leave.
Does asymptomatic transmission of Covid-19 happen?
So far, the evidence seems to show it does. A widely cited paper published in April suggests that people are most infectious about two days before the onset of coronavirus symptoms and estimated that 44 percent of new infections were a result of transmission from people who were not yet showing symptoms. Recently, a top expert at the World Health Organization stated that transmission of the coronavirus by people who did not have symptoms was âvery rare,â but she later walked back that statement.
Whatâs the risk of catching coronavirus from a surface?
Touching contaminated objects and then infecting ourselves with the germs is not typically how the virus spreads. But it can happen. A number of studies of flu, rhinovirus, coronavirus and other microbes have shown that respiratory illnesses, including the new coronavirus, can spread by touching contaminated surfaces, particularly in places like day care centers, offices and hospitals. But a long chain of events has to happen for the disease to spread that way. The best way to protect yourself from coronavirus â whether itâs surface transmission or close human contact â is still social distancing, washing your hands, not touching your face and wearing masks.
How does blood type influence coronavirus?
A study by European scientists is the first to document a strong statistical link between genetic variations and Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. Having Type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need to get oxygen or to go on a ventilator, according to the new study.
How can I protect myself while flying?
If air travel is unavoidable, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself. Most important: Wash your hands often, and stop touching your face. If possible, choose a window seat. A study from Emory University found that during flu season, the safest place to sit on a plane is by a window, as people sitting in window seats had less contact with potentially sick people. Disinfect hard surfaces. When you get to your seat and your hands are clean, use disinfecting wipes to clean the hard surfaces at your seat like the head and arm rest, the seatbelt buckle, the remote, screen, seat back pocket and the tray table. If the seat is hard and nonporous or leather or pleather, you can wipe that down, too. (Using wipes on upholstered seats could lead to a wet seat and spreading of germs rather than killing them.)
What should I do if I feel sick?
If youâve been exposed to the coronavirus or think you have, and have a fever or symptoms like a cough or difficulty breathing, call a doctor. On Tuesday, a federal judge in Indiana dismissed a suit brought by spiritual advisers for Mr. Purkey and Mr. Honken that argued for a delay on the grounds that their health could be jeopardized because of the coronavirus crisis if they entered the Terre Haute penitentiary.
The Supreme Court struck down the death penalty in 1972, arguing that it constituted âcruel and unusual punishment.â Four years later, it reversed that decision, amid rising rates of violent crime. Since then, some states have carried out regular executions, but only three men have been put to death by the federal government. Most recently, Louis Jones Jr. was executed in 2003 for the rape and murder of a female soldier.

Roy Keane and Michael Owen are fighting battles theyâll never win
It's more than 20 years since I interviewed Roy Keane for the only time. Manchester United had not yet moved to their ground training and so we sat on chairs on the balcony above the covered field at The Cliff. I was younger and intimidated by his reputation back then, but he spoke just as forcefully and honestly as now.
After the talk was done, the photographer Keane asked if he would mind if his photo was taken outside. Keane looked carefully. He muttered something about what the manager could say. He did not want the hassle of causing the volatility of Sir Alex Ferguson. So we dived out of sight of the manager's office windows. Keane had his photo taken with his back to a brick wall.
It was my only real snapshot of the way the two men existed next to the field. Football is full of strong characters, but in the history of our game there were few stronger than them. Keane tolerated Ferguson's volcanic showers and Ferguson used Keane's simmering anger as his valued weapon. Last week Gary Neville said he was afraid it would always end badly. He was right.
Roy Keane has beaten this week with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson
Keane and Ferguson worked together for 19 years at Manchester United
The duo are at odds since Ferguson told Keane to leave the club in November 2005
It was a coincidence that Keane with Neville had to sit on stage at a theater in Dublin last week and evacuation of Ferguson at the same time Michael Owen took a sledgehammer to his reputation of his former friend and fellow goals legend Alan Shearer.
Unlike some, I saw some particular sadness in the fact that Keane and Owen had chosen to speak out in different ways. Keane & # 39; s intensity is hypnotic and if his frankness upset people, that's their problem. When asked what he thinks about Ferguson, why would he lie? I agree with what he said. Why would he break up?
But it is also true that both Keane and Owen are waging wars they cannot win. They compete against men whose performance in the game transcends their mistakes. Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League titles in his team at Old Trafford. Shearer is the biggest goal scorer in the history of the Premier League. They are both unassailable.
Keane made no concessions to the age of Ferguson or his recent health problems when asked about their relationship. He attacked the way the manager handled Keane & # 39; s exit from Old Trafford.
He was still stung by the fact that when Ferguson and former CEO David Gill called him to the end of his club, they thanked him for his 11 and a half years of service when he was 12 and a half years had been with United. He was also averse to the idea that Ferguson always had the best interests of United in mind.
He went after his family. He implied that Ferguson's son, Darren, owed his playing career at United to nepotism. The same for Ferguson's brother, Martin, who was the main scout. Keane said that Ferguson would have given his wife a job at the club if he could have done that.
Owen's attack line, partly via the pages of his new book, Reboot, and partly via Twitter, would call Shearer's loyalty to Newcastle into question. He accused him of trying to move to Liverpool when Sir Bobby was Robson's manager. He said that loyalty in football was a myth. He said he wanted to puke because of this when he saw players kissing the badge on their club shirt.
Both Keane and Owen seem to be trying to fix something. They want to correct something that has devoured them. And in both cases it is not enough to talk about themselves. To achieve the justification they seek for their behavior in a career that ended years ago, Keane and Owen seem to feel the need to bring someone else down.
Michael Owen doubted Alan Shearer's loyalty to Newcastle in his new autobiography
[194590013]
Owen and Shearer were good friends, but they are also fighting each other now
It is something that goes beyond football. It is a fight for reputation. It is a struggle for revisionism. It is a fight for the truth. Or their version of the truth. It is a fight for something that has been lost. If something is sad about it, it is that what has been lost cannot be rediscovered by trying to undermine someone else.
History will not judge Ferguson because he was a ruthless man who could be bullying and greedy. It will judge him because of the trophies he has won. It will not judge him because he has signed Eric Djemba-Djemba. It will judge him because he made youth team boys the cornerstone of his team.
And Shearer will not judge history because of some machinations in Newcastle. It will judge him by the goals he has scored and the records he has set. It will hug him because he overshadowed Jackie Milburn and embodied everything we admire about an English center striker.
However, Keane and Owen also want to see the foibles. Ferguson and Shearer got away with it. They are assessed less strictly. They have reputations that they don't deserve. They are set on lions and their mistakes are swept away. Keane and Owen are consumed by their perception of their injustice. They have become avengers for their own reputation.
One day they may realize that the struggle was a waste of their energy. Hopefully one day they will realize that they did not have to attack Ferguson or Shearer to restore their own reputation.
Owen may be stung by the accusation that he was a fickle player that fans of clubs never liked he played before but history won't remember. It will remember that goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup, his hat trick against Germany in Munich, it will remember that he won an FA Cup final for Liverpool and that there was a time when his brilliance made him the face of optimism and joy .
Keane may have been stung by the way he left Old Trafford, but that will also disappear in public memory. I still consider his appearance for United against Juventus in Turin in the semifinals of the 1999 Champions League as the best showing a player has seen for an English club in Europe.
History will remember him for that and because, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, he is the best player in the years of United's dominance in the 1990s and beyond.
That is the irony in all of this. The reputation of Keane and Owen is secure. History will love them too. It's just that they don't know yet.
RAFA IS ACE ⊠BUT IT WAS LINED FOR ME
Rafael Nadal is the hot favorite to add a 19th Grand Slam title for his incredible record when he plays Daniil Medvedev on Sunday in the final of the US Open men's singles.
If he wins, he gets a 20-degree title from Roger Federer, which makes the debate about who is the greatest of all time.
Nadal is a great talent, but he could win 25 Grand Slams and I would still choose Federer as the biggest player. Federer cannot be beat for his grace, for his elegance, for his ability to lift the soul with a wave of his backhand, for the sheer beauty of his tennis.
Rafael Nadal becomes only one Grand Slam title behind Roger Federer if he wins on Sunday

The year was 1999. I was in the third year of my chemistry degree in Amsterdam, and doing a million things on the side. One of these things was being on the committee that created the âlustrum almanakâ for the 35th anniversary of our universityâs chemistry studentsâ society. (It was basically a yearbook that only came out every five years, but Iâll keep calling it âalmanacâ throughout). Did I have time for this? Somehow, I did. I think time worked differently before we had social media and streaming video.
The topic of the almanac was âThe Futureâ, because the previous one, five years earlier, was roughly themed around looking back at the past, but also because a future theme seemed appropriate for 1999. It was the last year of the millennium, and a lot of exciting things were about to happen.
I felt that we couldnât possibly publish a future-themed almanac without mentioning the most talked about science project of that time: the Human Genome Project. Because I clearly had nothing to do aside from my studies, lab work, the almanac committee, running a career day, and running the group who organised field trips, I took it upon myself to write that piece.
Reader, itâs cringey.
But I didnât want to spare you that cringe, so for your enjoyment I have translated the whole thing from Dutch to English and annotated it with comments from 2019 Eva. I am particularly embarrassed about one error, which I even contemplated fixing in the translation, but I left it in, just so you can see that I have at least improved my fact-checking skills. I think this might have been my first piece of non-coursework science writing, even if it was only in a departmentally published booklet.
Alright, letâs hop into the time machine and cringe along to my opinion piece from 1999.
 Human Genome Project
(originally written in Dutch and published in the VCSVU Almanak 1999. Translated and heavily annotated with snark, corrections, and hindsight by the author twenty years later.)
When you think about the near future, the terms âmillenniumâ and âEuroâ [1] probably cross your mind, but there are also several large projects happening in the different subfields of chemistry. In the area of biochemistry/molecular biology, the Human Genome Project is certainly worth a mention, and I shall attempt to put into words whatâs so special about that project. [2]
First, letâs get back to the very beginning: [3] Cells of living organisms contain DNA, used to pass on genetic information. DNA consists of long strands of four different âbasesâ, these are indicated with the letters A, C, T, and G. [4] A DNA chain is formed by two strands, in such a way that the bases A and T are opposite each other and C and G as well (âbase pairsâ). The three-dimensional structure of DNA is a helix. This was first discovered by Watson and Crick in 1955. [5] The total DNA of an organism is called the genome of that organism. [6] The human genome consists of approximately 3 billion base pairs, with approximately 80,000 genes in them. [7]
This space was actually reserved for an image, but I couldnât find anything that was both suitable for viewing and for print. Thatâs why there is text here now. [8]
And then now what this is really about: [9] The goal of the Human Genome Project is roughly speaking the elucidation of the complete sequence of human DNA and the localisation of the different genes. But why is it so important that the entire sequence of all those letters is known? Many disorders and diseases are genetically determined. So if you know exactly where the gene for a disease is, itâs possible, for example, to determine whether someone could get a certain disease, by checking if the gene is present. [10] Then methods to intervene can also be discovered. Of course this is extremely interesting for medical research, among other things. Thatâs why, since 1990, several countries are working in collaboration to find all the genes and decipher the order of the bases. [11] The goal is to have everything uncovered by 2005, around the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crickâs discovery. [12]
Humans are not the first organism of which scientists have wanted to know the genome. For some organisms, the search is already over, for example E. coli, a bacteria, some readers have now gotten to know it personally, which could also be said of the yeast S. cerevisiae. [13] The quests for the genes of these âcreaturesâ were completed in 1997 and 1996 respectively. [14] The genome of the little worm C. elegans is also already known. [15] But that was already too much of the past for this almanac. [16]
As with everything to do with expanding our knowledge of the human body, many ethical aspects also pop up. In the United States, 3-5% of the budget for the Human Genome Project is spent on studying ethical, legal and social issues around the availability of genetic information. [17] What kind of problems could arise? A much-cited example in this context is the problem of insurances. Letâs suppose: someone wants to take out a life insurance policy with an insurance company. If genetic information would be openly viewable by anyone, the insurer would be able to check if the customer has a hereditary disease. [18] Someone with a higher chance of a shorter lifespan would then be quoted a higher premium than a âhealthierâ person. Another point of discussion is the following: parents would test their fetus for a genetic disorder and could choose an abortion if they didnât want a child with a higher chance of a certain disease or with a genetic disorder. [19] When the media touches on the project, these are the sorts of discussions that usually happen. [19 again].
Personally, I think that itâs certainly useful to know the full DNA sequence of humans [20], particularly to simplify research into hereditary diseases. For the project, only a limited number of people were screened. [21] (At least, I donât personally know anyone who lent their DNA for this purpose and I think most readers donât either.) [22] Still, there are mutations [23] that only occur in a small number of people and those will now probably be overlooked if those people werenât screened. [24] As far as the ethical issues are concerned: I agree with the objections against the âinsurance storyâ. [25] Itâs simply not on to have someone with a hereditary disease pay a higher premium. If insurance companies were to have access to hereditary information [26], they might as well, in the name of equality, also have access to psychiatristsâ files, to see if their customers are perhaps suicidal. [27] When it comes to the matter of abortions, I think the issue is somewhat inflated: This is already a matter of concern at the moment, because we already know the genetic location of many hereditary disorders. [28]
For any further in-depth discussions, this almanac is not the right place. [29] Do you want to know more about the progress of the Human Genome Project (and are you curious about the source of my information for this article) [30], then pay a visit to the homepage of the project: http://bit.ly/2Y1md7I [31] (NB. this is not a link, so clicking on this page is useless. You need to turn on a computer, which perfectly brings us back to the theme âfutureâ.) [32]
Annotations by 2019-EvaÂ
The Euro! This was written before the Euro was introduced!
As I told my science writing students a decade later, you donât need to start your essay by explicitly stating that youâre going to discuss this topic. Thatâs clear from the title.
The cringe is strong in this sentence.
Yeah. That should have been two separate sentences. Itâs equally bad in Dutch. I kept the awfulness in there just for you.
No! 1953!!!! This is the worst mistake. Why did I not fact check this? Why did I just guess a random year in the 1950s? Wow, I sure hope I put some more effort into the other basics, like finding a catchy image to go with this pieceâŠ
Again, not a translation issue. The sentence was really that clunky.
Clunky sentence aside, this is not an error! Remember, this was written before the human genome project was finished. We didnât really know how many genes there were yet, and the estimate used at the time was MUCH higher than the real number. It was a sobering experience for us humans to discover that we have fewer genes than potatoes or water fleas.
Oh. Oh no. Not only did I fail to find an image, but instead of just leaving it out, I decided to point that out in the middle of the piece. Granted, there were many other jokes in this almanac, but the middle of an otherwise serious essay is not really the place for one.
I didnât even get off-topic that much, but I had no idea how to structure the piece so that the introduction connected to the main thesis. This might also be a good point to notice that I often started a new line without starting a new paragraph.
I take it back! 1953/55 was NOT the biggest error. THIS IS! Oh no. Itâs so bad. Iâm so sorry. I canât believe I ever used this phrase. Iâm sure I *knew* that we all *have* the same genes, and that itâs all about the variants. I must have used this turn of phrase just because I had seen others use it in popular media. But when we talk about people âhaving the gene forâŠ.â, that isnât accurate. Everyone pretty much has all the genes, but itâs the specific DNA sequence within those genes that makes some people more likely to get certain conditions. (It doesnât seal your fate. You can have the variant linked to a certain disease and still never get it.)
At this time, I was only really aware of the public Human Genome Project, and not the privately-run competitor project (Venter et al). I think this is a side effect of the way that the project(s) was/were talked about in the media in Europe.
It was complete in 2003, which was indeed the 50th anniversary of Watson/Crick. Iâm not sure whether the prediction was at one point actually 2005, and that I wrongly assumed that was the 50th anniversary, or that I knew the goal was for it to be the 50th anniversary, and got the year wrong because, as we learned, I did not fact check the actual year of the double helix paper. (1953!!)
Another run-on sentence that should absolutely have been at least two sentences, and with entirely different grammar at that. (Again, I tried to keep the bad grammar of the original.) Another thing wrong with this sentence is the inside joke thatâs alienating a big part of my audience. Donât do that! I was referencing the fact that our biochemistry groups used E. coli and yeast in their labs, but a large chunk of the audience of this piece were people from elsewhere in the chemistry department, who maybe took one biochemistry lab and forgot all about it.)
I absolutely do not trust the years in this piece anymore. Let me fact check this⊠Oh, hey! Itâs correct!
1998. I know you were wondering. 2019-Eva has you covered on the dates with her modern access to Wikipedia.
Remember, the theme was âthe futureâ. Got to bring that home to the readers. Over the course of this piece I am clearly wearing several hats. Instead of just sticking to âinformative writer (who canât fact check, but whatever)â I dip in and out of my other roles. Here as editor of the almanac, and elsewhere as a member of the department, joking with the readers, many of whom I knew personally .
I got this from a .gov website at the time and I have no idea if this number is correct, and if I really meant âspentâ or just âset aside forâ. Please donât ever use this piece as any source of information.
Not really. The insurer would AT MOST be able to tell if this person was AT RISK for a disease with a known link to a certain genetic variant. Again, please donât ever use this piece as source material for anything.
Hoo. Wow. This is a Bold Statement, all right. In the second sentence I attempt to make it clear that it wasnât my own point of view, but something that a lot of people FEARED would happen at the time. But thatâs not clear at all! I should have started the sentence by reiterating that this is about peopleâs fears, and not necessarily what was predicted to happen.
Which humans, 1999 Eva? Did you mean âthe human genomeâ? Did you feel that you used that term too often in this piece and tried to mix it up with ambiguous language?
I misused the term âscreenedâ. I do it again later in this piece, and I have done it for years after that. They were not âscreenedâ, they just had their DNA sequenced.
Wrong tone of voice again. Keep the whole piece in the same tone. Then go back to it twenty years later and make fun of it in a blog post using whatever tone you like.
2019-Eva would say âgenetic variantsâ, but Iâll let this slide because I do remember that âmutationâ was pretty commonly used back in 1999.
YES! This is EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED! In fact, itâs even worse: Variants that are really common have been overlooked because the group of people whose DNA has been used to determine default sequences was too homogenous. 2019-Eva even wrote a piece about the inequalities caused by the exclusion of certain populations from genetic research. Donât worry, it was fact-checked and edited by real professionals, and I got a lot better at writing about genetics in the last twenty years.
This sentence was equally clumsy in Dutch. What do I even mean? From context, I think I meant to say âI agree that we need to be concerned about the use of genetic information by insurance companies.â
Genetic information.
WOAH. Woah, woah. I get what 1999-Eva is saying, and sheâs not wrong in pointing out how absurd that would be, but she is extremely crass. After another two decades of life experience, I would no longer casually bring up mental illness in such a trivial way. I canât really judge whether this was bad writing on my part, or if it was a Dutch bluntness thing, or an âanything goesâ nineties mentality, but I donât remember anyone saying anything about this line at the time. It certainly looks extremely weird and in bad taste to me now!
Huh? I think what I was trying to say is that in 1999 it would already have been technically possible to do prenatal testing to find out whether an unborn child had certain genetic variants, but that it wasnât done to that extent (only for certain chromosomal abnormalities) so it wouldnât make sense to immediately assume that having even more information about individual genetic variants would expand the range and specificity of prenatal screening tests. I had to read over this bit several times to figure out the leaps in logic I left unexplained. Writing critique: take the reader along with your line of thought and donât assume theyâve made all these connections on their own.
1999-Eva, you already took it way too far, but Iâm glad youâre at least somewhat aware that the medium was not suited to the message.
Yes. I would like to know where you got that wrong double helix discovery year. Iâm very curious about that.
Remember when people would give you a url with the full âhttpâ and âwwwâ parts included? Also, 2019-Eva was somewhat skeptical that the Oak Ridge National Lab website was THE source website for the entire Human Genome project, but I put it through the fabulous Internet Archive Wayback Machine to see what it looked like in 1999, and you know what, it looks pretty legit â and VERY nineties.
Again with the stupid jokes! Oh, hilarious, a url on a piece of paper isnât clickable. We have never heard that one before. And the theme reference! Yes, this was all about âthe futureâ. And now, in one particularly dark timeline of that very future, we can all cringe at my bad writing from 1999.

In such cases, it may be difficult for such a parent/guardian to take care of the medical needs of his/her disabled child. Even when he/she has paid full premium, the handicapped person is not able to receive any annuity only because the parent/guardian of such handicapped person is still alive.â
In a recent judgment of the Supreme Court [Dnyaneshwar Suresh Borkar v. State of Maharashtra; 2019 SCC OnLine SC 304]in the case of a murder convict, of which Justice Sikri was a part; the Court took note of a very rare thing that âthat, from the poems, written by him in the jail, it appears that he has realised his mistake which was committed by him at the time when he was of young age and that he is reformative; therefore the appellant can be reformed and rehabilitated.â and refused to place this case in ârarest of rare categoryâ.
Ideology | Keyword to success: Hard Work
On analysing few of Justice Sikriâs interviews his only mantra to the studentâs pursuing law was summed up in three stages as mentioned:
Three stages in a lawyerâs career â First: Work, work and no money; Second: money commensurate to the work; and finally, little work and a lot of money.
âWhile the human in law is important, humane in law is indispensable.â
-Justice Dr A.K. Sikri
âHow far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary worldâ, this quote by William Shakespeare is apt, to sum up the momentous journey of Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri.

Why would an insurance company deny me coverage for not having central air and heating?
We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? I highly doubt that not having A/C or heat is going to make our house any more likely to be damaged or destroyed in a hurricane, robbed or flooded. Opening the windows and doors instead of having a HVAC system consistantly running in our house makes us less suseptable to fire.""
Car Insurance.?
Does anyone know if there is a temporary car insurance you can get, so you only have to pay for it when you are driving the car. My car insurance is $150/month for plpd(partial), it is the cheapest there is, and my car is only worth around $2000. I only drive my car once a month for a 70 mile round trip. I just think its a lot to be paying $150 for a 70 mile trip. More than $2 a mile just for the insurance seems like quite a bit to me. There is no taxis or public buses where I live, and I dont want anyone else to take me. I am only interested if someone can give me information about the insurance. And a motorcycle wont work. Thanks.""

Car insurance for 19 year old driver?
Hey guys, So I'm a 19 year old student looking to buy a car, more specifically a 1996 Pontiac Firebird. I'm not gonna ask the regular question about how much this costs, 'caus i already tried quotes from geiko, farmstate and all those, but to get a car insurance on that car it's going to cost me around $4.000 at geico which was the cheapest.. Main question: If i don't care about my own car, like if it breaks down or gets destroyed stolen or whatever I don't care caus' it only costs like $4.000 itself. Can I then buy just the required insurance to cover third party damage ? I think it's called a Liability insurance? Problem is that I've searched the internet, and can only find complete packages, but I heard there's a lot of money to be saved that way, and by a lot I mean A LOT, is this true? If yes, where would I find insurance that only covers third party's losses?""

Nationwide car insurance....?
So yea it was a snowy day in mississippi..... something that don't usually happen... I slided on ice and hit the guard rail... it was only 1 or maybe 2 bump... the car wasn't messed up that bad.... I mean there was a dent from the inital bump but what do you expect? The officer said when I asked them could they fix it he said probably... its not really bad at all.... and that the same thing I said... so I find out days later after they inspected it, they was gonna jump it and not fix it... so my question is why do we pay all these hundreds of dollars every month that when it comes to the company to their job, they don't do it? I think I was paying 240 every month for my 98 ford explorer... also do they suppose to pay me for the value of my car since they not fixing it? The reality of it that if I known this would have happen could I just save that money I was paying them these years and put the money in my pocket so when I crash I could take that money and buy me my own car instead of being carless when I was giving the money to the insurance company? I mean wuts the point of even paying them honestly?""

How do the candidates expect to make everyone buy health insurance?
Health insurance costs are extraordinary, Hillary and OBama want to force people to buy health insurance (and subsidize the costs for some) but they fail to address the reasons health insurance is so expensive. Why can't people buy health insurance over state lines?
Why can't the individual pick his policy out of state? Why can't this person and the family pick and chose the details of their plan? Not everyone wants a policy which the state mandates the use of chiropractors or psychiatrists. Zogby says: 72% of those polled (1,001 likely voters) supported allowing someone living in one state to purchase health insurance from another state, if the insurance is state-regulated and approved. (15% were opposed and 13% were not sure.) But... Current laws prohibit individuals from buying health insurance across state lines. Rather, they must buy what has been approved in their own state. What industry in America is insolated only to each state? So tell me, anyone that really knows the answer...why are we limited in our chose? Give me the rationale of any state legislator (you've heard)...they have to have some 'reason'. Then tell me what you think is the underlinging reason...thanks. How much does points on your license affect my insurance?
I would like to let you people know that I'm a full-time student, and that this month has to be officially the worst month of my life. Throughout this month I've been pulled over twice, and the reason for them are pretty stupid if you ask me. I basically see it as being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The first time I got pulled over was while I was getting off a red light with a car in front of me. I got hit with 3 tickets. - Tailgating, (supposedly I was too close to the other car when i was getting off the red light) - Careless driving, (don't know how this plays a roll in why I got pull over) - Loud muffler, ( just got it back from the mechanic that day and had a leak on the exhaust) The second time I got pulled over I stopped on a red light and checked if I can make a right on red, there was no sign stating I can't, so I went ahead and turned red when possible. I was given two tickets. smh -____- FML - Failure to observe traffic control device ( don't know how if I clearly noticed it was red) - Careless Driving _______________________________ Aside from the facts that they are points on my license, I'm going to do my best in trying to take some courses that can remove the points they gave my license. Is that about right or is thre anyone out there paying a lot less, for fire, theft and 3rd party insurance""
