The Timeline:

Jan. 24 - Feb. 7 | sign-ups Sign ups will open on the 24th of January at 00:00 GMT [ countdown to opening of sign-ups ] and will close at 23:59 GMT on the 7th of February [ countdown to close of sign-ups ]

Feb. 8 - Feb. 22 | Matching, interest review, and assignments This is the period where the Hosts will check over references and request any additions that might be needed, do all the back-end matching, doublecheck that everyone who signed up is still interested, and hang out your assignments. All matches will be assigned on or before the 22nd.

Feb. 23 - Apr. 25 | Creation! This is the creation period! It's long on purpose, to allow time for participants to create work they're proud to gift their giftee, and also (if you like) to create "treats" for other participants. There will be mandatory check-ins on the weekends of the 22nd of March and the 5th of April. At these check-ins we will ask to see some manner of WIP, even if it's just a base sketch or a loose fic outline. We're not looking for polish at the initial check-in stage, only to see that work is underway and is a thoughtful representation of the giftee's MC. At the second check-in we will be wanting to see a work in a more polished state, to be assured that you can complete your piece by the deadline of Apr. 25.

Apr. 26 - May. 11 | Gift review Hosts will use this time to check over submitted works and ensure they meet event guidelines. If we need to request any edits to your finished work we will endeavour to do so as quickly as possible. This is also the final period for any last-minute pinch-hitting.

May. 12 | Reveal day! The big day! Gifts will be shared on tumblr, Ao3, and the official server and we'll all get to see and celebrate everyone's hard work and wonderful MCs :>

So this week is going to go down as maybe the most sapphic week in animation history. It’s going to have a great case, there are so many sapphic shows or shows with prominent sapphic couples airing this week.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Here’s a quick rundown:

Yuri Is My Job!

Premiering on Crunchyroll on April 6th.

Yuri is My Job! is based on a yuri manga of the same name. It follows high schooler Hime, who cares deeply about her image as sweet and helpful, even though she’s actually selfish. She accidentally injures the manager of a cafe, and agrees to work there to make up for it. But this is no ordinary cafe, it’s like a cafe dinner theater where all the waitresses play characters from a fictional high school and act out skits for the patrons. Hime’s character is supposed to be in love with one of the other waitresses’ character, but she starts actually falling for the girl. Only problem is, behind the scenes the other waitress seems to hate her.

Yeah, that sounds kind of bonkers! I can already see the story now, Hime starting out playing a role, and eventually having to legitimately earn the love of Mitsuki.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story

Season 2 premiering on Crunchyroll on Friday, April 7th

Ah Birdie Wing. If you saw season one, you know just how delightful wacky this show is. It follows the stories of Eve, a golfer that plays in illegal underground golf matches for the mob, and Aoi, a golf prodigy and the new sensation of the golf world. Their lives crash into each other and the chemistry is overwhelming and immediate.

Technically Eve and Aoi aren’t canon as of the end of s1, but it’s hard to imagine that the show isn’t heading in that direction. It makes no effort to hide the fact that these two are into each other.

I’m so excited to see what season 2 has in store for these two. Birdie Wing is just a delightfully weird little show.

Princess Principal: Crown Handler Chapter 3

Premieres in theaters in Japan on Friday, April 7th

Alright, so this won’t be useful to a lot of people reading this, as this is only premiering in Japan this weekend. But I wanted to mention it because (a) it’ll come over to the US sometime this year, and (b) Princess Principal is awesome and I want to promote it when I can.

Princess Principal was a 12 episode series that aired in 2017, and Crown Handler is a six-part sequel OVA series.

In a nutshell, Princess Principal is a steampunk spy thriller set in an alternate universe European kingdom that has been divided by a wall, Berlin-style. It follows a team of spies, masquerading as high school girls, as they try to prevent the two sides from going to war.

I know, “why is this on a list of gay shit?” Well, because it is. Two of the main characters, Ange and Princess Charlotte, are big-time into each other and while the original series does the anime thing of “we’re only allowed to go so far with this”, the OG series has a lot of intimate scenes between the two and does end *SPOILERS* with the two of them sitting on the beach together while holding hands.

And perhaps Crown Handler, being made years later, can finally take their relationship farther.

RWBY Volume 9

Volume 9 episode 8 airing on Crunchyroll on Saturday, April 8th

RWBY has been ongoing, and the current volume has been airing since February, but there’ll be another episode this Saturday. Right now RWBY is in the middle of dealing with a lot of trauma, BUT, the bees are canon and dating so every episode of RWBY is now officially gay. So says me.

The Owl House: Watching and Dreaming

 Series finale airing on the Disney Channel on Saturday, April 8th

I’M NOT READY TO LOSE THIS SHOW! 😭

*ahem* The third and final season 3 special airs on Saturday, and promises to be mega emotional and super gay.

I’m grateful that this show had a chance to finish its story, something a lot of sapphic media doesn’t get to do. But I am still pissed about it getting cancelled in the first place simply because it didn’t fit their “brand” (read: this show is too gay for Disney).

But I just know that Dana and her team put together a sensational finale.

Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch From Mercury

Season 2 premiering on Crunchyroll on Sunday, April 9th.

Affectionately called G-Witch, season 1 of this show was a revelation in the fall. It follows the story of Suletta Mercury, precious cinnamon roll and the most talented mobile suit pilot around, and Miorine Rembran, daughter of the president of the Benerit Group, a mega-corporation that has massive political power.

The show revolves around a school that’s mostly full of the children of powerful people. And then there’s Suletta, a nobody that just wants to be a normal girl and have a normal school life but through a series of events ends up in a mobile suit duel that she easily wins, earning her the title of Holder, which makes her Miroine’s groom.

At first, the two treat the arrangement as a business arrangement, both seeing practical value in this arranged engagement. But it’s obvious that Miorine is actually pretty into Suletta from the start, and we see Suletta slowly falling for Miorine too.

G-Witch is incredible. Part awesome mecha fights, part political intrigue, part romance between two useless girls who’d rather die that admit their actual feelings.

I am SO EXCITED for season 2!

LGBTQ media hasn’t had it great as of late, with a ton of frustrating cancellations and it almost feeling like Hollywood is going backwards in terms of its commitment to giving us space to tell our stories.

But animation, both in the US and in Japan, seems to be making great strides, being our light in the dark.

All five of these shows are airing episodes this week, and Crown Handler will be in theaters this week and on streaming/blu-ray later this year. RWBY has been airing for weeks and its been the gayest volume yet. the Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady just finished airing and was wonderfully sapphic. I’m In Love With the Villainess is scheduled to air sometimes this year. And just maybe we might get Arcane season 2 before the end of the year.

I’m excited for how sapphic and yuri animation is progressing, I hope it keeps going forward.

I think Jason and Tim may have canonically been in the same school grade before Jason died. Not because Tim skipped any grades, but because Jason was behind two grades. This would also mean Jason died before he ever made it into high school.

Based on what I have extrapolated from post-Crisis comics, this seems like a working timeline:

Here is a calendar view with arbitrarily chosen years and other details added in for reference (if you can’t see it very well, here’s the spreadsheet)

Below is the math + sources (all based on post-Crisis comics)

Before being adopted by Bruce, Batman #410 says Jason was a 5th grade dropout

(sidenote: Jason said his mom was sick for over a year and she died in the most recent February before Bruce met Jason in Batman #408-409)

By the time of Batman Annual 12 (published only a few months before Jason died)*, Jason was in 7th grade

His deathdate is given as April 27th in Batman Annual 25 and The Batman Files, which is during the school year

So he was probably in 7th grade when he died

Jason was most likely 14** when he died, and his Aug 16 birthday is before the New Jersey cut-off date of October 1st

Tim was most likely 12 when Jason died, since they’re almost exactly 2 years apart

Usually, 7th graders are 12-13 years old

So Jason was 2 years older than typical for 7th grade, and he is 2 years older than Tim

Tim started 9th grade/high school at age 14 (Robin II: Joker's Wild), over a year after Jason's death

14-15 is typical starting age for 9th grade, so Tim is clearly in the usual age-range for his grade

So Tim would be in 7th grade when Jason died. Same as Jason.

* Publishing dates don’t always match up with where things fit in a timeline. Especially since annuals aren’t always clearly positioned in related to the rest of the comic’s issues. In the annual, Jason does mention KGBeast, who he’d fought recently in the then-current Batman run.

My default is to presume things are meant to be set generally near other comics published the same time unless I see an indication otherwise. There isn’t much indication here—Jason’s age really isn’t mentioned at all during his actual run as Robin IIRC, we have to extrapolate from later comics.

**My reasons for Jason being 14 and Tim being 12 when he dies are long and complicated, but for a brief overview:

We know they’re almost exactly two years apart because Jason turned 18 on Aug 16th in Detective Comics #790, and just a while before that, Tim had turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116. That would make them around 1 year 11 months apart. The death certificate in The Batman Files says Jason was 15 when he died on April 27. However, Jay dying in April and Tim being 13 when his training starts a few months later (implied to be late summer/early fall, in Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying; age 13 confirmed again in Batman #448) and then December and more than 6 months passing before Tim is finally said to be 14 starting high school (Robin II: Joker’s Wild), and then having to stuff Tim’s Robin training, Knightfall, Contagion, Legacy, and Aftershocks into all being while he’s 14…all make it mathematically unreasonable for Tim & Jason to be anything other than 14 and 12 when Jason dies. Tim must turn 13 after Jason’s death, right before he’s introduced, so that he has time to become Robin etc. before he turns 14. Jason being 15 really doesn't work well when comparing to other comics, so I think it makes more sense to say they for some reason rounded up his age to 15 since he would have been turning 15 in a few months. With this timeline, Jason would be roughly 14 years, 8 months, and 11 days old when he died. There IS a comic (Batman #416) that implies Jason was Robin for longer than this would require, but the timeline for that makes my head hurt and it was contradicted by Nightwing: Year One anyway. There’s also the case of Dick’s age compared to them, which bitimdrake has already gone into depth about and also makes it less likely Jason was 15 since Dick was 19 when he became Nightwing (Batman #416) and at most 21 after Tim already became Robin (Deathstroke Annual 1, 1992). TL;DR: Jason could, theoretically, have been 15 when he died, but it makes the timeline so wonky to do that and 14 almost 15 works way better.

My personal headcanon is Jason drops out of 5th grade at age 10, probably due to homelife issues. Catherine Todd gets sick, and a year or more passes of Jason not being in school while she’s sick. It’s not entirely clear when Jason becomes homeless, though Batman #426 says he “disappeared” (according to his old neighbor) after his mom died to avoid getting put in a state home. Catherine dies in the closest February to when Dick quits being Robin/gets fired at age 19. Then Jason gets adopted at age 12, turns 13, and goes into 6th grade right after. This would match up perfectly for Jason to be in 7th grade by the time he’s 14, rather than 9th grade like most other 14 year olds.

(Which, at that point, especially when Jason had such good grades, why not let him skip to be in his own age group? idk, maybe Bruce or Jason or Alfred had particular thoughts about Jason continuing where he left off, maybe Gotham schools have particular feelings about that, who knows)

I do want to note, I think it is very unlikely Tim and Jason attended the same school in pre-Crisis canon. Jason’s school for 7th grade wasn’t specified, though in Batman and Robin Vol. 1 #25 he says he went to Thomas Wayne Middle School for 3 months (why only 3 months??? eerily that is the same amount of time between a spring semester starting & Jason’s April deathdate...an implication Jason switched schools or was homeschooled at Wayne Manor for a bit??).

EDIT: I've recently looked it up and realized some schools in the US do include 5th grade as middle school. So if Jason dropped out of 5th grade, at Thomas Wayne Middle School, three months after starting there, that could be an explanation for why he said that.

It seems like (but not totally sure) Jason probably went to public school, which would match up with Robin: Year One showing Dick go to a public middle school, too.

On the other hand, we know for sure that Tim attended various private boarding schools throughout his childhood (as stated in Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying, Robin III: Cry of the Huntress, etc.) so I just really don’t think they were at the same schools. If you wanted to, though, you could easily make them go to the same schools in fanfic so they could be in the same classes.

Starting this Wednesday, on April 5th at 12:00am EDT, we will begin an Osblaine showdown to help determine what we all consider to be the best Osblaine scene of them all! We will start off with 32 scenes and end with one. Each scene has been randomly paired up with another and you will vote on your favourite of each match-up. Winners will move on to the next round until the ultimate winner is determined and the best scene is crowned! Each poll will be open for three days with the exception of the final poll which will be open for six days. The full schedule will be posted under the cut.

May 2023 Important Dates

AKA my notes on The Astrology Podcast's May forecast, hosted by Chris Brennan, Austin Coppock, and guest host Claire Moon. In astrology news, a lost astronomy work of Claudius Ptolemy's was discovered, hidden under a Medieval manuscript & found via X-rays. The same researchers found the tomb of who is now the earliest known female astrologer, Heliadora, who lived around the same time as Ptolemy and Valens. In other news a SpaceX rocket exploded on the eclipse, and Twitter removed verification (the Twitter story has been lining up with eclipses). With Pluto in Aquarius, there are discussions of what potential various AI applications have, and the Saturn-Neptune copresence makes it difficult for us to tell which audiovisual media is real or not.

We enter the month still in the middle of eclipse season (4/20 and 5/7) & a Mercury retrograde (4/21-5/14), which began within a day of each other.

May 1st - Sun-retrograde Mercury cazimi, Pluto stations retrograde This is Pluto's first station of many in Aquarius for the next 20 years. It's happening at the midpoint of the Mercury retrograde (began April 21st), where the path is now leading up and out of the underworld. We're redoing things, but the issues are ready to be resolved.

May 5th - Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio Eclipses tend to bring things to the surface that we won't normally see otherwise. It's a continuation of eclipses on the Scorpio-Taurus axis, and is the last one in this sign, but will be finally completed with a lunar eclipse in Taurus this October. The Moon immediately opposes Uranus after this encounter, and combined with fixed signs' resistance to change, it's going to be a bumpy one. Austin describes this as "toxic water."

A Venus-Neptune square preceding the eclipse softens things a bit--we may feel greatly relieved once this is over. However, be aware that this playful beauty may cloud our vision of reality. Don't mistake a good TV show for an actual representation of events.

May 7th - Venus enters Cancer Mars is still in Cancer, so there's still potential for discord in this part of our charts, though Venus applying to a trine with Jupiter (exact May 12-13) should ease things a little. This also puts her within trine distance of Saturn, who's in her sign of exaltation, bringing a bit of structure.

May 9th - Sun conjunct Uranus

May 14th - Mercury stations direct This brings some stability to Taurus, especially with Jupiter entering the sign soon.

May 16th - Jupiter enters Taurus Jupiter has been a bright morning star in Aries and, as ruler of this decan, has a performative, bombastic stage presence quality about it. He will eventually square Mars once in Taurus. Add that to Mercury, the Sun, Uranus, and the Moon around the 17th, we've got a big stellium in Taurus. We'll have friends and allies in the Taurus parts of our charts, and in Jupiter's sign Saturn can help us out. Jupiter in Taurus avails himself of and enjoys the knowledge that others have collected.

May 17th - Jupiter squares retrograde Pluto Immediately upon ingress Jupiter squares Pluto, who hasn't regressed out of Aquarius yet, and by May 19-20 Mars will enter Leo, Forming a T-square in these fixed signs. Mars-Pluto brings uncomfortable subtle powers, and Mars-Jupiter brings bold, enthusiastic displays of power (think Randy Savage), which may be disastrous for some but could work out very well for others. Jupiter is the quintessential opportunity: do you feel empowered to pursues this, or are there hidden powers at work? This T-square can also give a ruthless focus on one's goals and objectives. Are you willing to suplex the devil in a wrestling match?

In the news we should expect to see people taking big risks, and a worsening of existing military conflicts--though Jupiter may attempt to broker peace. As with Mercury, Jupiter-Pluto can indicate manipulation of information.

May 19th - New Moon in Taurus

May 20th - Mars enters Leo, Opposes retrograde Pluto Immediately upon entering the sign Mars is involved in the T-square discussed above. Mars can bring a burst of energy and drive, but also strife or conflict to this house of your chart. Next in this sign is Venus, who may smooth things over, and with her retrograde is certain to bring a LOT of emphasis in the sign. Where Mars goes, Venus will follow, though she slows down before they reach a conjunction.

May 21st - Sun enters Gemini

May 23rd - Mars square Jupiter T-square discussed above.

May 27th - Moon♍-Sun♊-Saturn♓ T-square (not pictured) The Moon will oppose Saturn along the Virgo-Pisces axis every month during the next few years, and we can better accept what's really there than when oppositions occurred along the Leo-Aquarius axis. Be wary of excessive self-criticism, though.

May 30th - Auspicious Election for the month

Around 2:45PM local time, adjust until Libra is on the Ascendant. The Ascendant ruler Venus is at 24Cancer, moving away from the sextile to Uranus & towards a trine with Neptune. In the 10th house of career & public image, she's got some help from a square to the Moon with whom she has mutual reception. This further ties & strengthens the 1st and 10th houses. If you can get the Midheaven around 3-4Cancer, you'll get a nice trine to Jupiter and sextile to Saturn, mitigating Jupiter's 8th house placement and Saturn's in the 6th house. This is good for career, but not great for friends & groups, as Mars is in the 11th house.
