Dragon Ball Super 114
Some guy in my replies: “No u don’t understand that’s a Yakuza reference all the criminal gangs in Japan hold hands like this it’s how they tell each other they like crime.”
Last time Goku started fighting Caulifla and Kale to show them Super Saiyan 3, but we’ve scratched that itch and now they just want to defeat him in battle. So Kale powers up to her maximum, but she still has that little problem of being able to control herself at this level.
And Goku would know, since she clobbered him pretty good the last time she did this.
Caulifla, on the other hand, is all for it.
Elsewhere, Vegeta and Top have been fighting, but Vegeta keeps getting distracted by what Goku’s up to. The girls have been improving dramatically since the tournament began, and I guess that’d be hard to ignore.
Top admits that the Saiyans are a remarkable people, and Vegeta can’t help but take this opportunity to point at himself and talk about how he’s the best Saiyan of all.
So Kale finishes hulking up, and Caulifla is worried at first that Kale still can’t recognize her in this form, but she takes her hand anyway and assures her that they’ll push forward together no matter what. This somehow reaches Kale, and...
She changes back to her “happy medium” form, and regains her personality. And yet, everyone observes that she still retains the power she had in the her jacked up state. So somehow she’s finally gotten a handle on her Super Saiyan form.
Meanwhile, Goku notices that his hands are trembling. With excitement, I guess? He’s been excited about a good fight before, though, and this time he acts like he doesn’t understand.
It’s like I was saying before, this time is different for him. He’s got these two younger Saiyans fighting him, and they’re pushing him out of his slump from Jiren clobbering him. But they’re also sitting under the learnin’ tree, and he’s showing them things they’ve never understood before. He’s finally getting to spend quality time with his own people, and the culture he never got to experience because his homeworld was destroyed. And I think he understands that on some unconscious level.
The closest example I can think of to compare this to is like when he was sparring with teen Goten in one of the last episodes of Z, or that barn-burner he had with Gohan in Episode 90 of this show. He had the same sense of satisfaction, but he could tell himself that it was a father-son moment. Here’s he’s having the same kind of feeling, but with strangers, and he doesn’t get it.
Or maybe he’s parsing these romantic undertones without realizing it. Kale starts out saying she’ll follow Caulifla’s lead, but Caulifla insists that they fight as equals. Remember, they’re part of an outlaw gang back in Universe 6, and Caulifla’s the leader of that gang. But she’s not the leader of their relationship, which is why I get so irritated with randos who keep trying to interpret this whole thing in terms of Yakuza stuff, or taking the “sister” thing too literally. You know who’s actually a blood relative of Caulifla? This guy:
Renso speaks highly of Caulifla, but he’s not part of her gang and he seems to have closer ties to Cabba from their time in the Sadala Defense Force. I’m pretty sure Caulifla never even mentions her brother at all.
You know who’s part of the inner circle of Caulifla’s gang? This dude:
Not Cabba, I mean the anonymous guy with the pompadour mussing Cabba’s hair. He must be a pretty big wheel in this gang or he wouldn’t be acting so high and mighty in Caulifla’s presence. We never learn anything about this guy, except that he defers to her without question. And we know this is where all the big shots in Caulifla’s gang hang out, because Kale’s standing just off screen.
You know who calls Caulifla her “one and only”? Who Caulifla looks at with unrestrained adoration? Who Caulifla keeps holding tenderly?
Seriously, what gang sign is this? Harold, they’re lesbians. Honestly, I don’t even care that much, but every time some weenie trolls my #caulifla tag and tries to deny or downplay this, I just get more convinced. Because they’re always like “no no they’re not gay they’re not gay u just don’t understand gangs” and I’m like just give it up already. Seriously, who are you trying to convince, me or yourself?
Look, I’m old enough to remember when Simpsons fans used to argue about whether Smithers was gay. I can admit that I once thought there might be some heterosexual explanation for his whole bit. But that was thirty years ago, and these two goofballs are constantly gazing into each other’s eyes. Don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining.
Now, where was I? Oh, right, Caulifla and Kale start fighting Goku and whoopin’ his ass.
Bam!
PONCH!
Pursuit!
Goku starts to get boxed in, so he uses a Solar Flare. I like how he still says “Sorry, Tien, but I’m borrowing your move!” before he uses it. Meanwhile Krillin spams Solar Flare more than Goku and Tien put together, and he doesn’t even acknowledge the creator.
Caulifla misses Goku and eats a faceful of rocks, so Kale gets upset and attacks Goku on her own. She’s a house of fire!
Then they run across Frieza, who decides he wants in on this, but Goku tells him this is a private party.
I know Frieza has a bigger role to play near the end of the tournament, but I gotta say he’s a real pain in the ass here in the middle. He keeps standing around talking about how he’s going to do horrible things to his opponents, but he hardly ever jumps in and fights. It’s almost like he’s still that lazy fuck who spent most of the Namek Saga sitting in his scooter and drinking wine. Anyway, Goku tells him to fuck on outta here.
Also, Catopesra shows up to offer Frieza a different challenger, but Frieza ignores him completely, so clearly Frieza’s just phony tough. Catopesra even changes the “P” on his costume into an “S”, but Frieza doesn’t care.
Anyway, Goku gears up for the next round, and Caulifla says he sure is confident, and Goku admits that he’s not. Make no mistake, he’s not toying with these ladies.
So then... wait, seriously?
I spent so much time talking about the other handholding scene that I forgot about this one.
Which issue of “Way of the House-Husband” is this from? Like, the main guy’s talking about laundry detergent with someone, and then he goes “I like to hold hands with my wife”, and the lady he’s talking to is confused because everyone knows holding hands is a thing criminals do to express how loyal they are to their boss, and the more murders you commit, the longer you have to hold their hand.
So they do the bit where they make a dust cloud and Goku uses his senses to locate them, but that was the plan. Kale traps his arm, setting Goku up for...
Fuck yeah!
See, some of you may be confused, so let me break it down for you. The “sworn sister”, hand-holding, the “weeping at the though of being apart” stuff? That’s Caulifla and Kale being gay. This part? Where one holds him while the other beats the shit out of him? That’s the gangster stuff.
“WHERE’S MY FUCKING MONEY!”
“Gettin’ real tired of you ducking me, man!”
I can see it now. “tumblr user dipshit89 replied to your post: But but Kale’s holding Goku’s arm and that doesn’t prove she loves him!”
I forgot how he got out of this one, so I had to look up a YouTube clip of this, and basically Caulifla went for a spin kick to his head, which gave Goku enough time to duck and swing around Kale to reverse her hold. Goku’s the man. This fight rocks so hard.
Likewise, I couldn’t get a good shot of this action, but Goku tries to teleport after he breaks free, but Caulifla’s seen that too many times, so she throws a ki blast behind her, guessing that’s where he’s going to reappear, and she’s right on the money. I think that’s the first time we’ve seen any character scout the Instant Transmission. Cell was just so fast that it didn’t bother him much, and I think every other character Goku has fought since then has been the same way, just rolling with the fact that Goku can teleport, rather than learning to anticipate how Goku uses it in a fight.
Well, Frieza used the same strategy to beat Jimmiz, but I don’t think that counts, because with Jimmiz teleporting was pretty much all the guy does, so it wasn’t exactly difficult to predict. Goku’s whole deal is that he’ll go so long without Instant Transmission that you almost forget he can do it whenever he wants.
So Goku finally turns it up to Super Saiyan God. Well, I say finally like he’s been holding back up to now. This whole thing has been kind of similar to the way Goku started out against Jiren, except that in the Jiren fight, Goku was fresh, and he was deliberately working his way up to the higher transforms to feel Jiren out. Here, Goku isn’t waiting to use Super Saiyan God. Chances are he couldn’t use Super Saiyan God until now. And it’s likely he’d still rather wait a little longer, but if he keeps fighting at SSJ2 he’s gonna get his ass kicked, so it’s now or never.
But now, Caulifla and Kale aren’t so impressed. They went into this eager to see Super Saiyan 3, and now Goku’s showing them an even higher form and they’re like “Yeah, we can still take him.”
Goku opens with fingerguns. Wait, there’s ki blasts coming out of there, that fingergun is loaded! Watch out!
Kind of weird to see Goku using a beam attack. Someone should write a fanfic set before this fight where Goku fights a memorable opponent with a beam attack and that sort of serves as a call-forward to this fight, where he uses a similar beam attack here. It’s me, I should be doing that.
So things go as they did before, except this time Goku’s much harder to double-team.
Not sure Kale’s entirely on-model here, but I still like this shot.
The girls stay on him, though. Kale manages to catch Goku in a big green ki blast, and Caulifla’s like “Yeah, you got him!”
But Goku just swims up the blast and clobbers her. Shades of Cooler’s Revenge!
Then Goku fires two ki blasts at once. Kale struggles mightily against one of them...
... While Caulifla tries to dodge the other. Except Goku’s steering it to chase her. Now, as Goku recovers his strength, we begin to see the gap between their powers. They were doing well against him as a Super Saiyan 2, but in this form, Goku can sling around bigger, more powerful ki attacks and overwhelm them, despite their numerical advantage.
Kale manages to toss her ki blast up into the air, but Caulifla gets caught before Kale can help. And that one blast pretty much took Caulifla out of the fight. She doesn’t want to quit, but she knows she’s finished, and Kale can’t fight Goku alone.
Goku congratulates them for their great talent, but he says they need to learn how to “finish a fight”. I didn’t understand what he meant before, but now I get it. They probably had Goku cornered at least a few times before he turned Super Saiyan God. If they had capitalized on that advantage, they could have defeated him before he ever got the chance to make it to Super Saiyan God. Or, more accurately, if they had known how to capitalize on that advantage while they had it.
It goes back to that “street brawler” thing Whis said about Caulifla last episode. She’s good, but she lacks the martial arts background that Goku has, so there’s a lot of subtle aspects of a fight that she doesn’t know how to deal with. As we saw, she’s a quick study, and Goku could show her what to do through fighting a lot faster than explaining it. And the same holds true for Kale. But ultimately, no matter how much they improve from fighting Goku, their basic approach to fighting is the same: Pound the other guy down until he can’t continue.
And that usually works, but in this case Goku was getting stronger, not weaker, as the fight progressed. Their best bet was to put him away early instead of trying to wear him down. Their moment was probably about the beginning of this episode, where Kale reached her full power and Goku wasn’t ready to go God Mode on them yet.
But they didn’t know how to seize that opportunity, so they just kept attacking and waiting for a better opportunity that never came. It’s like when I play chess and I focus more on trying to take out all the opponent’s pieces instead of looking for checkmates. That approach can work, but it also gives your opponent loads of time to find a way to checkmate you.
Anyway, Goku’s got the clear advantage here, and he starts preparing a Kamehameha to blow them both out of the ring. But Caulifla reminds Kale of that thing they got before the tournament began, and says it’s time they fought together “all the way”.
But Goku is unaware of this plan, so as he blasts them (and a chunk of the stage) away, he doesn’t notice something cool is happening.
Awwww yeah.
It’s Kefla Time, Bay-Bay!
This was Champa’s secret plan all along. Before the tournament began, he gave Potara earrings to the girls and told them to put them on near the end of the tournament. They didn’t understand, but he insisted that they trust him on this. And so they have, and here we are.
This tournament fucking rules. We’ve seen everything else so far. Spirit Bombs, Evil Containment Waves, like four or five Hellzone Grenades. It’s been five years and I still can’t believe they brought back Android 17. So yeah, let’s throw in some good ol’ fusion.
EVEN VEGETA IS AFRAID
Kefla is so strong and fast and cool that she overshoots Goku when she jumps over to him.
Goku tries to punch her, but he misses.
Here’s KISS with “Unholy”.

Okay I know I said I took a break but this popped into my head and now I'm irrationally grumpy and you lot have to deal with it. We are going to talk about why I hate Alya. Not in the "why her and Faybon don't get along" way like I did in the bio or that one story, or why I was personally angry in the ways my Miraculous senpai sorted out. No, we are going to go over why I hate Alya as a plot device. Full description and salt under the cut.
Now what do I mean by Alya as a plot device? Well, as any writer will tell you a character is there to move the plot forward. Most things in the story are there to move the story forward. It might be the characters personal story that we find more about, it might be part of a side or overarching plot, or if might just be little details that end up making you realise "wait it's been sunny for how long? No wonder they're always sweating it's a heatwave." Or something else like that.
Alya has the role of "Main character best friend." In most shows this would mark her as the sidekick or the emotional support or something like that and while she does do that, and do it well don't get me wrong, she also has other roles in the story that run counterintuitive to her best friend role.
See Alya has two other roles in the story, the journalist always trying to get the scoop and what I like to call the big sister role. Now this role is a little less of a hard stereotype/cliche but I think once I start describing it you'll understand what I mean and how it fits Alya.
The big sister role (as I call it) is somebody close to the main character (check) cares deeply for the main character (check again) is always pushing the main character to do more and be better (check) but is so busy with her own life they doesn't really know what the main character likes or does during their spare time. Or does and just sees it as a simple little hobby that's not a big deal and that they should be doing something more important.
Now that last one might confuse some of you. Alya knows what a big deal being Ladybug is, she knows how stressed Marinette gets over being the guardian and looking after the kwamis but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking specifically about Darkblade and being the class president where Alya says she's too busy running the ladyblog to do it but that all Marinette does is sleep. Now normally this would just be seen as a joke regarding why Marinette is always late to class and that would be it. But that's not what we've seen. Keep in mind that by this point both Mr Pigeon and Timebreaker have aired. In Mr Pigeon we see that Marinette spends a lot of time designing, her sketchbook is filled with with hats in multiple styles, and the effort she takes to make the hat is time consuming as well, considering Alya was Marinette's partner on this project, not that I can recall what she did? She should know this. Then we have Timebreaker. An episode that shows us that, not only did Marinette work on a banner for her friend but that she has responsibilities in the bakery that may prevent her from hanging out with her friends in general.
And if you say Timebreaker comes after Darkblade in production order and shouldn't count? (Please say it, it makes this next part so satisfying) Then here's my counterpoint. Darkblade is 114 in production order, Timebreaker is 116. Now while you could argue these are close enough that Marinette should either be working on the banner or is at least aware of the order she needs to be in the bakery for? That's not my point. You want to know what episode 113 is? Animan. Alya has the perfect excuse to bring up her new relationship with Nino as a reasoning for why she can't be class president, but she doesn't. Worse still, want to know what other episodes take place before Darkblade in the production order? Pixelator and Gamer. So, going by that order not only is Marinette working on her designs (and potentially making them I can't remember if we've been shown her chest of gifts for Adrien by this point) but there's also the potential work of Jagged Stone and all the times she spends playing enough videogames with her family that she's a blooming master at it. Pick your poison, either way there's a lot more on Marinette's plate then Alya's... Speaking of which.
Alya as a journalist. Now the journalist character typically falls into one of two types. Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen. They are either the hardworking reporter who will do anything for a scoop, is determined to crack open any secret, and often finds themselves in danger or... They're the bumbling but means well reporter who is willing to do anything for the scoop of a century, wants the juiciest secret no matter the cost and often finds themselves in danger. Alya falls into both of these depending on what the story needs but I'd say she ends up more as Jimmy Olsen.
Alya has one main focus as a journalist for all of season 1. Figuring out Ladybug and Chat Noir's secret identity, something we know for a fact she doesn't really give up on finding out until she has to keep her own secret as Rena Rouge in season 2. It's why Marinette drags her to the museum in Pharaoh, its why she gets akumatised into lady wifi (now I'm not going to call out the stupidity of thinking Chloe is Ladybug here, everyone gets hit with the stupid stick at some point in this show, it's just more obvious when it's the investigator that gets hit by it.) and as I mentioned she says that if she knows she'll be able to help Ladybug out. Now this does eventually become true however it's not until much later, by the time Alya says this she's been kidnapped twice, gotten akumatised, been used as a puppet and mind controlled however many times. By this point in the show it's been well established that even if you're not akumatised that doesn't mean your safe from exposing your secrets. Anyone knowing their identities without protection is a liability. But Alya doesn't get that... Yet. Which, yeah great character development but is not the point of my ramble.
Alya as a best friend. Now I'm not going to sit here and say Alya is a bad friend. I've done that, I've grown up. I could probably write a dozen ways to twist Alya into a terrible person by framing things in a certain way. I won't. Alya makes a good sidekick to Marinette and is great emotional support when Tikki isn't enough to snap the poor girl out of her spiral. She makes a good best friend character.... Until it conflicts with her other two roles.
Now the problem with a show like Miraculous is that there are so many characters the show could focus on however, aside from their time just before getting akumatised we mainly stick with Marinette. This means we only see how characters interact with her and don't know if the way they are is just how they are or if they are different with other people. Now Alya, as the best friend, is the character we see interact most with Marinette aside from Tikki and Chat Noir. As such we have to assume the way Alya acts with her is the way she acts with all her friends which, thanks to the conflicts I've mentioned, would come off as dismissive. And pretty nosy too but that's not what Im focusing on.
Marinette and Alya have three main talking points before she gets let in on the secret. Adrien, the ladyblog, and school. Of those three the only topic Alya has a right to doubt Marinette over is Adrien due to her constant catastrophising and inability to act normally. However, whenever Marinette brings up that it's a bad idea to try and look into Ladybugs identity what does Alya do? She ignores her, even going so far as to say "what you think Hawk Moth reads my blog?" Now ignoring the fact that if someone collated all the information about your enemy in one place it would definitely be something you'd be interested, this is also ignoring the fact that her blog gets an insane amount of views and she was even featured on tv. If HawkMoth is in Paris yes it's safe to say he knows about the Ladyblog and if he doesn't? He's guaranteed to akumatise someone who does sooner or later. Heck she even if it's ladybug herself telling her to knock it off so it's clearly an ego thing. (Unsure if ego is the right word but selfish seemed to harsh).
Then we have school and Marinette's relationship to others. The amount of times Alya brings up Adrien whenever Marinette forms an opinion? Chloe "I know she's close to Adrien" ignoring the fact that she saw on her first day that Chloe was a total pain before Adrien even arrived. Lila is the same thing, then you have all the times Marinette does something good she goes "and this wouldn't have anything to do with the fact Adrien will be there would it?" Now yes most (all) of the times she's right but can we just look at that for a moment and see what being a plot device has done to Alya? What type of person does she see Marinette as if the girl cant do anything, good or bad, without it needing to be tied to Adrien in some way? Honestly it's like just because Alya only has the one obsession she works towards at all times (being a journalist not the ladyblog) she thinks nobody else as.
One last thing that has to be brought up whenever someone talks about the stupid stick and characters. Volpina. Now I'm not going to say Alya should have believed Marinette that Lila was lying. Do I believe that if Alya believes Marinette is jealous because of Adrien that there should be at least the possibility of someone being jealous of Marinette for the same reason? Yes. Do I believe that Lila's Akumas being all about illusion and disguise should have raised a flag? Yes. Do I believe that someone should have brought up Lila saying she's not in Paris yet Volpina was during scarlet moth? Yes. Is any of that my problem with Alya in this episode? No.
My problem with Volpina is that Alya, best friend to Marinette, you know the girl she constantly says is always late and has no idea what's going on, the girl she knows is obsessed with Adrien, that Marinette. My problem is that when that Marinette walks into class late, sees an empty spot next to Adrien and that Nino has taken her seat and assumes that Alya, being her best friend, has somehow convinced Miss Bustier to swap their seats? Alya looks at her like she's an idiot, says she didn't do anything, that there's a new person in class and that Marinette is now stuck in the back of the class.
Two things bug me about this. One, the immediate dismissal that this is something she'd do when it sounds like the plot of an episode where Miss Bustier gets reakumatised because Marinette is such a mess next to Adrien that everything goes wrong and Adrien is all depressed because he really though this would be a good opportunity for her to not hate him. Set it after Gorrizilla and you have the perfect recipe for confusion.
The second problem? Why does Marinette need to move? Aside from the plot what logical explanation does it make to kick Marinette out of her seat? The only outcome I can see making sense in universe that doesn't make Alya look like a bad person? Is that Miss Bustier has no idea Alya and Nino are dating.... Or she's trying to set Marinette up with Nathaniel and didn't expect her to take the empty desk. We know she didn't want Nino to sit up the back like he did the year before so that would explain moving him back a spot but that would give him Alya's seat. So then why?

It's time for another episode of "I dig too deep into things that don't need to be dug into!!!"
Today's topic: The inaccuracies on the Cecilos dress up magnets (actual canon material, not bringing up fanon obviously)
The additional rose-gold lame cravat on Carlos' Karl Lagerfeld-designed lab coat is credited from #136, which is Mudstone Abyss Pt. 2, it's actually Charles' cravat
There is no UOWII sweatshirt mentioned in #55
The phone left in the pocket of the jeans from #113 is referring to Cecil's jeans, not Carlos' (even though they're on Carlos' page and are credited as the jeans from #25)
There is no hazmat jacket in #159
There are no hazmat pants in #72 or #127
The helmet mentioned in #145 is most likely a space helmet, not a hazmat helmet, and neither of them wear it
There is no barber shop cape in #3
The best rabbit fur coveralls are from #136, aka Mudstone Abyss Pt. 2, aka they're Kevin's
The deer mask in #29 is not worn by either of them
The Mitchigan t-shirt from #116 is worn by City Council
The mirrored leggings and extra long jorts from #175 are Michelle's
The denim vest (otherwise this conversation is over) is in reference to #103's proverb, so neither of them wear it
#i did out of nowhere research this to send to a friend#i was trying to convince myself not to buy them and i noticed the rabbit fur coveralls and thought “those are kevins??”#other grips:#the professional radio hosting unitard and opera tights are the same thing in this#but the sponge clogs from the opera are merged with the leather pants from fashion week#so you cant put the tights and sponge clogs together#also the cat ear headband and handcuffs are not labelled with their episodes#i get that a lot of these they were just trying to fill space but i feel like there has to be enough actual outfits to do that#what about cecils wedding outfit?#i kinda just like complaining and researching though. dont make this stop you if you wanna buy it#i just needed concrete evidence to not buy it since theyre going out of stock#cecil certainly looks like leonard burton here though imo#wtnv#welcome to night vale#hello again nv tumblr hows summer break treating yall?

Dragon Ball Super 116
GOKU VS. KEFLA: THE FINAL ROUND
youtube
This is it! The climactic conclusion of the best fight in Dragon Ball Super! There must be a winner!
Against all odds, Goku has somehow tapped into Autonomous Ultra Instinct for a second time! Whis never dreamed he would figure it out ever again, much less a few minutes after the first time! So Kefla’s doomed, right? Well don’t write her off yet. Kefla’s still got a lot left in the tank. For example, she decides to see Goku’s Ultra Instinct and raise him Super Saiyan 2! Well, that might not sound like a big deal, but when a Fused Saiyan does it, it means a lot.
And there’s the abs. When I got to these episodes, I was kind of shocked by how skinny Kefla was in her base form, and then she went Super Saiyan and bulked up, but not as much as I remembered. Now at SSJ2, she’s starting to look more like I remembered. The key to this is that she’s combining Caulifla’s SSJ and SSJ2 forms with Kale’s Legendary Super Saiyan form, which gets more muscular the stronger she becomes. So I guess they had to start with a pretty skinny Kefla, because they couldn’t have her beef up as big as Kale, or that would defeat the idea of it being a fusion with a smaller character.
Oh this is a really cool shot of the arena.
So it’s pretty much like we saw the last time Goku used this power. Jiren couldn’t touch him, and neither can Kefla now. And it’s not for lack of trying. As strong as Kefla is, I think there’s a solid argument that she could give Jiren a run for his money.
Okay, I think her hair tie is gone now, the same way Kale always loses hers when she transforms. Kefla’s hair has always confused me so just knowing that there’s been a hair tie involved is a relief.
Meanwhile, Vegeta watches Goku playing the artful dodger and he finally gets a clue: this was the ideal style that Whis told them about in Resurrection F. Vegeta’s all mad that Goku went and surpassed him again. Sure, Vegeta, he did it just to spite you, because that’s what everything is about, after all.
Here’s a cool spot where Kefla flies after Goku who falls off the side of a cliff, and then he digs his heels into the rock and leans back so Kefla can’t hit him. Wild.
Or, rather, he does this so he can hit her. But that’s the trick, you see....
As powerful as Goku has become in this state, he’s mostly only able to use it for defense. Kefla can’t even touch Goku, but on the other hand, Goku’s attacks aren’t nearly as strong as Kefla was expecting. He makes a little headway with it, but he’s still not hitting her hard enough to defeat her. And maybe he could take his time with this and wear her down, but he doesn’t have that long. The UI power could wear off any second now.
As Whis explains to the others, even those who can use Ultra Instinct have trouble using it offensively. Goku’s problem is that he’s still having to use his brain to tell his body how to attack, and that interferes with his body acting autonomously for defense. That’s why his attacks are so weak. And if he doesn’t figure out a solution soon, he’ll run out of juice and Kefla will win.
So Goku calls his shot: He’s going to end this fight with one more attack.
Kefla doesn’t take kindly to this, and ramps up her power even further. Now she’s shooting concentrated ki blasts in every direction, and they rip up everything they touch.
She just starts slinging all this red shit everywhere, and Goku hops and flips through it as he moves in closer to her...
And the whole time, he’s chargin’ up...
Kefla’s just screaming and cackling like a maniac. I really have to hand it to the dub VA’s for this, Elizabeth Maxwell (Caulifla) and Dawn Bennet (Kale). DBS was the first time I ever watched a Dragon Ball series in Japanese first, and I was curious how the dub would handle the new characters, and I’m really pleased with Kefla’s manic energy. They nailed it.
She keeps firing red lasers, but Goku’s getting closer and closer... Finally he jumps toward her, ready to fire...
Ah, but that plays right into her hands! Remember, no flying in the Tournament of Power, so now that Goku’s jumping at her, he can’t steer or dodge! So now she can concentrate all that power she was slinging around every direction, and aim it right at him!
THE POWER OF...!
CHRISTMAAAAAASSSSS!
But then Goku just does this sweet midair flip and skates along the front of her blast, using his ki ball like a weird little skateboard!
HOW THE FUCK IS HE DOING THIS?!
KALE LOOKS UP AND SHE’S LIKE “AWWWWW SHIT!”
HAPPY...!
HANUKKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Kefla gets blasted through the stage! Then her Potara shatter, and coincidentally...
... the Fusion dissolves, and so it’s Caulifla and Kale who tumble to the bench!
They’re OUT.
Kale apologizes for losing, while Caulifla cries out for revenge. Yes! Fight Goku again! Give us Kefla/Goku II! Make it happen!
So now Team Universe 6 is down to just two fighters: Saonel and Pilina. They vow to win, but come on. What chance could they have?
Meanwhile, that last round with Kefla finally got Jiren’s attention. At least he’s not meditating like he planned to do for the second half.
As for Goku, he’s tapped out all over again. I guess it’s a net positive, since at least this time around he won a fight with Ultra Instinct instead of eating a super punch from Jiren. But still, if he plans to defeat Jiren, he’ll have to do Ultra Instinct a third time, and can he even handle that? Well, those are matters for later episodes. As for this one, what else can I say but:
This was a brilliant finish to a classic fight. A lot of dumbasses out there were only happy to see Caulifla and Kale eliminated from the competition because they hated those two. But discerning Caulifla and Kale likers, such as myself, know the truth, that Episodes 113-116 were a bona fide barn-burner, and the best of what Dragon Ball Super had to offer. Show me a fight in GT that came anywhere close to this. No, don’t bother, because I already watched GT recently, and I have 65 haikus that say there isn’t one.
I’ll admit, there have been times where I thought this liveblog was a mistake, because most of the stuff I’ve been covering has been pretty weak. A lot of it is downright terrible. But I knew the Tournament of Power would cheer me up, and that these four episodes in particular would really cheer me up, and I was right. It’s like all the frustration and regret from before has metled away. There’s 15 episodes of Super left to go, and I’m refreshed and ready to tackle ‘em!
Well, later, I think.

A Jikook Guide to RunBTS: 112-121
Yes, I'm still doing these! It's just happening more slowly than I'd like because writing for work + writing fic + trying to go to bed before midnight + so much amazing content being released that clearly must be poured over and dissected = less time to make guides. For anyone still with me, he's the next section!
Ep 112 “Dalbang School Part 1” (Ep: 5 / KM: 4)
The ones with BTS in a classroom driving Teacher Jin insane
5:58 - JM declares that he and Taehyung will pair up (by being the first to hug each other in a game), but then when Hobi blows the whistle at 6:38, JK runs over to hug JM before Tae can get to him.
6:58 - Jin asks why JM said he wanted Tae and then hugged JK. JM explains that he didn't hug him, he just found himself in JK's hug as JK cackles in the background.
7:24 - When Jin blows his whistle at the class, JK and JM mirror each other in putting a finger in one of their ears.
7:35 - Teammates JK and JM are immediately on the same page about wanting their team name to be Kim Seokjin. When they have to change it, JM quickly picks up JK's suggestion that they call their team Bang Sihyuk. These don't sound like particularly unique moments, but when you watch it, it just really strikes you how in sync the two of them are in terms of physicality, ideas, and sense of humor.
9:52 - After Jin comments that he heard JM did very well in school, JK adds that JM was the top student. When someone else asks if JM was the best or second-best, JK forcefully reiterates that he was the best student.
12:45 - When they get a question right, JK and JM clasp hands and bump their shoulders together.
13:10 - JM and JK both goof around, speaking in satoori and challenging JHope to a fight of sorts.
13:27 - When Jin repeats that they got the question right, JK and JM do exactly the same as 12:45, but seated this time.
14:22, 14:36, 15:13 - In all three of these moments, JM nearly falls over laughing at something JK did that no one else found anywhere near as funny.
23:36 - When JK says he's good at this game, JM laughs and pokes JK in the chest with a marker.
BEHIND 2:30 - JM takes a selfie of him and JK with his personal phone while they're supposed to be paying attention to Jin.
6:35 - JK cheers on JM and calls him Jimin-ssi when JM announces he's doing well on this spot-the-difference round. When Jimin modifies the brag to say he only found four, JK says "that's still quite impressive."
Ep 113 “Dalbang School Part 2” (Ep: 5 / KM: 4)
4:50 - We all know how JK is when he gets into his "focus" zone, especially in a competitive environment. But here, when JM rather rudely interrupts JK's melodica practice, JK just starts playing around with him and giggles.
7:41 - As RM & JH take their turn, jikook are whispering to each other in the back row.
11:42 - After quickly agreeing on a lunch option, jikook do a high five / handshake thing and then JM says "we think alike" and "we get along pretty well." JK responds "that's exactly it" and the on-screen captions tells us they are a "good match."
22:20 - This is where JK and JM start switching back and forth carrying each other on their backs to get under a limbo stick.
They go again at 23:35, 26:11, and 28:13.
And again at 30:22 and 32:16 and 34:30 because, even though they lost, they want to try to do it again to show that they can as a "matter of pride."
25:00 - JK points something out to JM and then pats his butt.
33:33 - JM announces they lost, and then jikook do another handshake / high five thing.
34:33 - JM does an... interesting pose for the camera where he puts his hand on a bent-over JK's back and smirks.
34:56 - Yet another handshake and JM pats JK on the back when they finally pass the limbo challenge.
BEHIND 5:55 - While examining the limbo setup, JM comments that JK is good at this. JK comes over to give a demonstration and JM watches him be silly with it and says "he's a strange kid" fondly.
6:21 - Another jikook limbo attempt - this one was cut because they did it too easily.
Ep 114 “League of Number One Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 1)
The ones where BTS play games with League of Legends world champions
3:55 - After Jimin protests that he shouldn't be out, JK tells his hyung to turn around and face the back.
14:40 - JK fake-boxes JM after losing the hammer game.
18:18 - JK mimics Jimin's BWL intro.
Ep 115 “League of Number One Part 2” (Ep: 2 / KM: .5)
BEHIND
7:05 - JK comes over to check on Jimin's phone to make sure he's actually visible in the selfie the teams take.
Ep 116 “Team-Building Special Part 1” (Ep: 4 / KM: 1)
The ones with random games in that rec room-looking place that are a lot more fun than they sound
22:14 - JM and JK play around with the jump rope during breaktime.
22:26 - JM and JK play around like they're boxing with each other.
BEHIND 5:15 - JK appears to take an interest in watching JM's... back as he moves around acting out potential poses.
Ep 117 “Team-Building Special Part 1” (Ep: 4 / KM: 2)
5:30 - Despite showing pretty much everyone else touching everyone else in the pose guessing game, we don't get a single shot here or in the behind of JK feeling up Jimin. The above photo proves that it happened, though, so definitely side-eyeing the editors, here.
BEHIND 5:35 - JK keeps throwing water bottles when they're supposed to be taking a group photo. Jimin pulls him back next to him and puts an arm around his neck. JK puts an arm around Jimin's shoulders in return.
7:51 - After it's explained that JK is staying late to watch Jin do his penalty, a packed-up Jimin comes over and stands next to JK, waiting until they're done to leave.
Ep 118 “Photo Story Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)
The ones where BTS play a Samsung-sponsored game involving getting specific pictures while a spy tries to ruin the fun
4:22 - JM appears to direct JK to go punish Tae and pats JK's back when he starts to obey. Something happens that we don't see when the angle changes - next thing we see, JM seems to be pushing JK? JM then giggles at JK pretending to beat up Tae. (After this, JK spins around like a ballerina. Not jikook-related, just adorable.)
29:51 - JK calls Jimin twice without adding "hyung."
32:28 - JM pulls JK along by the wrist. Meanwhile, J-Hope once again mixes up their names.
32:44 - Though there is now a group walking slowly together and he doesn't need to pull him along anymore, Jimin takes JK's hand again.
37:02 - There are a bunch of seats open in the room, but Jimin walks over to sit right next to JK.
BEHIND 5:40 - When JM tries to steal a post-it from JK, JK scolds him in satoori banmal. JM calls him out for not calling him with hyung and JK quickly apologizes (in a way some k-army jikookers have said is like how a married person would respond to their nagging spouse!).
6:09 - JK and JM meet up and JK tells JM he's exhausted. There's a kind of weird moment that I fully admit I may be reading too much into where JK seems to be walking right towards JM, then abruptly stops and turns, looking at the camera, before walking with Jimin in a different direction than he had been heading. Then, JM says he thinks their matching shirts are hilarious and that it's funny they're wearing them for the show.
Ep 119 “Photo Story Part 2” (Ep: 4 / KM: 3)
8:21 - "You are me, I am you" moment: Jimin does a ballet spin the same way JK did in part one.
11:18 - JK is the only one to vote for JM to be able to keep a picture in other than Jin (who has nefarious reasons for doing so).
29:40 - JM goes over to help JK see how many of his photos the spy ruined and almost falls over laughing when it becomes clear it's nearly all of them.
34:21 - JM puts his hand on JK's shaking leg to help calm him (see above photo), but JK is so irritated that it doesn't work like it usually does. Poor bunny!
35:17 - JM pulls at JK's shirt and hand, then folds over his back while trying to get him to confess that he actually lost.
38:24 - JM has a comforting hand on JK's neck when he's acting upset about losing.
38:32 - When it seems like JK is struggling to come up with an ending statement, JM helps prompt him.
BEHIND
0:55 - JK talks about how amazing it is that Jimin found so many cards.
3:51 - When JK is playing with the sequin art on the front of his shirt, JM leans over and starts rubbing on them, too.
5:11 - Jimin tells JK that, if he wins, he's going to make the loser hike Mt. Achasan. JK asks why he's looking at him when he says that and they both laugh. Jimin pats JK's chest and they laugh even harder. Jin and Tae both have "omg, these two" looks on their faces.
Ep 120 “Reply BTS Village Part 1” (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
The ones with a real-life Mafia game inexplicably set in a 1970s village. It's... fairly difficult to follow, but the guys are into it and the outfits are great!
24:40 - Jimin breaks character and laughs when asking JK if he's the culprit.
29:40 - Caption: "The air is undeniably tense between Gamer Jeon and Chief Park." Not explicitly jikook, I just find it funny that the writers seem to be playing with some real life relationships, making sope best friends and jikook have tension that leads to banter...
BEHIND
5:34 - When Jimin is playing with the yo-yo, JK expresses concern that he's going to hurt his fingers (caption: Kook is just worrying for his hyung). Then, JK asks poutily and in banmal if he can play with the yo-yo multiple times and Jimins says no. Like, JK straight-up gives his hyung a command ("let me try that") using informal speech and no one bats an eye!
5:58 - Jimin starts singing a song about an ants. JK watches him. JK initially says to Hobi "look, he's a fool/dummy!" (in banmal again), then starts singing along. He jokes that JM doesn't know all the lyrics and Jimin says back "quiet, you."
Ep 121 “Reply BTS Village Part 2” (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
38:48 - After having asked for it a bunch in the Behind of the previous episode, JK now has Jimin's yoyo.
non-jikook note: At the end of this one, they "time travel" to solve a mystery in Joseon-era Korea and I can't express how badly I want to see that. Please come back to that, Run!
BEHIND 0:58 - Jimin and JK play around accusing each other with exaggerated accents and formality. Jimin comes up behind JK and reaches out to touch his shoulder, but stops when Tae joins them and accuses them of plotting together.
9:05 - When JK says everyone else is so good at acting, Jimin compliments him that he was very funny towards the end.

i was extremely tempted to put the glee one on here too but i'll spare you because no one wants to remember glee even if they didn't watch it
I am answering the Glee one because oh my god someone reminded me of that show and I-
14. If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
Vancouver, BC, Canada. I went there for a friend's wedding at the end of 2019 and I fell in love.
17. Whats your favourite piece of clothing you own?
I have a bear onesie that I am absolutely in love with. It's too warm to wear now, but I practically live in it during the winter.
28. Do you like chewing gum?
Yeah! I used to always have gum on hand, but not so much anymore.
31. Whats your favourite type of cake?
This is so hard. Red velvet? Maybe?
43. What do you think is your best talent?
Oh god I have no clue? I can't even think of a talent??
44. Can you drive?
Yes and no. I learned to drive yeeeears ago, but then I moved to Arizona and got so much driving anxiety that I never got my license. I'm working on that now.
48. What is your weirdest childhood crush?
Oh no... Probably Robin from that terrible Batman & Robin movie?
55. Are you scared of space?
Not really? I feel like I probably should be, though.
56. Can you knit?
NO and I'm so mad about it! I tried learning to knit years ago and it was a struggle. I really want to go back to it sometime soon and try again.
68. Name a film you watch for the soundtrack?
The Strangers 2: Prey at Night has such a good soundtrack. It's an okay movie, but that soundtrack tho.
88. Answered, TL;DR: Nope!
104. What’s your opinion on fish
As pets? I'd never want one, but they can be cool. As food? No thank you. If it's from the sea, it's not for me.
113. What’s your favourite type of jewellery?
Necklaces. I like all of the variety & I especially like being able to choose whether or not someone sees it.
114. Savoury or sweet? Sweet! Which is mostly because the coffee I drink ends up being super sweet, and I live for that.
116. What do you call carbonated beverages?
Soda! It takes me out every time I hear someone say pop.
118. What is something dumb you believed as a child?
I thought spiders lived in beards, and so I was absolutely terrified every time I saw someone with a beard. Not a single clue where I got that from.
122. Did you watch Glee?
VERY briefly when I was like 14? Didn't really hate it, but not really a fan, and then I got to the Rocky Horror Episode. Hated that, never looked back. BUT I very recently watched a video from Glee where they BUTCHERED Let's Have A Kiki by Scissor Sisters.
I consider that a hate crime. Having to hear Lea Michele say hunty? I'm suing for damages.

74 The Reader (08)
75 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (19) This was fine until it VERY MUCH WAS NOT FINE

78 The Rainmaker (97)
79 *Batman & Robin (97)

152 Black Christmas (74)
THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)
I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.
