I know you said that people could work a minimum wage job and theoretically pay off college or even buy a house, but maybe the minimum wage jobs were different when it was first instituted? I highly doubt McDonalds was around back then. I just think minimum wage was worth more because minimum wage jobs were different back then
....what?
McDonald's was founded in 1940, and was fully established as a chain franchise by the 1960s. Aside from that, I'm not really clear what you're saying here. The minimum wage in 1965 was $1.25, which is equivalent to $11.17 in 2022 dollars. The minimum wage now, in places that haven't adjusted it for local cost of living or otherwise, is $7.25. Even my state, which has enacted a different minimum wage, is at $12.56. That is barely different from $11.17, and that is a higher rate than is federally required otherwise!
This is while absolutely everything costs far, far more than it did in the 1960s, and the federal minimum wage as adjusted for inflation is lower than it was then (by like.... a lot). Expecting someone to be able to pay their bills on $7.25 hourly literally anywhere in the country is, in my opinion, a war crime.

Hellers are saying bi!dean is canon because of the Scott Baoi reference from the leaked script. Any thoughts?
Hi there Anon,
I'm not sure what reference you're talking about, TBH. I've only been on Tumblr intermittently recently because I've been busy writing (YAY!), and I haven't seen anything about a leaked script recently. Scott Baio was referenced in 2 actual episodes--4.15 Death Takes a Holiday and 11.17 Red Meat--and I'm not aware of any others. Perhaps someone can post a link or something? In general though, Destihellers have constantly used the flimsiest and often offensive pretexts in the past to declare that bi!Dean and/or Destiew is "cannon," so I doubt this is any different, whatever it is.
These bigoted assholes have tried to use Dean fanboying over Dr. Sexy or Gunner Lawless, liking telenovelas, enjoying cooking and nesting and being domestic, or even referencing films like Magic Mike to claim that Dean "can't be straight," because Jack forbid that he likes male celebrities or things associated more with women or otherwise not strictly follow "traditional" gender roles. That's not even getting into how most of their so-called "proof" is based on scenes taken completely out of context, heavily manipulated images and GIFs, and ridiculous circumstantial nonsense like clothing and lighting color, food, and set decor.
In this particular case, has this leaked script even been verified as authentic? Hellers have been trying to circulate supposedly leaked scripts for months now with no proof to support their agenda. Anyone can type up some script pages, post pics of them, and claim they've been "leaked," but they're meaningless without some kind of authentication.
Even if this script is real, whatever reference the Hellers are making a big deal over continues to show that they fundamentally don't understand how subtext really works. Subtext is meant to support the existing narrative not contradict it, and it's meant to be obvious enough that the general audience can catch it instead of only a few obsessed shippers. No TV show would ever present an established character as obviously straight in the main narrative and then try to use "sooper sneakret klewes" to suggest that the character is queer. SPN in fact is the opposite of subtle when it comes to revealing sexuality--every confirmed queer character has either outright stated their sexuality or done something blatant with someone of the appropriate gender, like hold hands or kiss. Thus if Dean was actually bisexual, we would clearly see it--he'd be looking at gay porn as well as straight, hooking up with guys as well as girls, and so on. This would be true even if he was closeted (which is a whole separate discussion about why that wouldn't happen), because we the audience would still see him doing all that while hiding it from the other characters. The fact that we've never seen anything at all like that demonstrates that bi!Dean stans are simply deluding themselves over something that never existed.
Bottom line is this: the ONLY thing that determines someone's sexuality is who they're actually attracted to, not their hobbies, favorite celebrities, clothing, food preferences, or any homophobic or toxic masculinity-based stereotype. Dean Winchester has only shown actual attraction to women over the 15 years of SPN and has explicitly stated his lack of interest in men--which has been confirmed numerous times by Jensen Ackles, Eric Kripke, and various other members of the cast and crew. Not respecting someone's stated sexuality is a form of homophobia called erasure, and that applies to straight people too.
#anon ask#anti bi!dean#anti destihellers#dean is straight#that is canon#get over it#destihellers are SO pathetic#that's not how subtext works#like at all#your sh*tty biphobic stereotypes won't change that#idiots on the internet#the stupid it burns#what show are they watching?

Why do Sam ans deAn have a Shared reaper??
I... donât think they do, at least not in the way youâre implying here...
I think itâs more... Billie assigned a Reaper Babysitter (mostly to Dean since that assignment was prompted by Billieâs conversation with Dean in 13.05, but hey, they keep an eye on Sam, too, because where Dean is, Samâs not typically all that far away, and theyâre each just as likely as the other to break the universe...)
And we know they now have shifts, because apparently one reaper isnât enough to cover both of them. So... I honestly donât think they even have a âshared reaperâ in THAT sense of the term.
I mean, itâs not like every person on the planet has a personal reaper following them around waiting for them to die, you know? Thereâs no metaphysical significance to two individuals being reaped by the same reaper, either. Aside from the logistics of their deaths. Itâs been implied that reapers are assigned territories to cover, back in 4.15. Alastair captured a reaper and suddenly everyone in town stops dying until Tessa shows up to do the captured reaperâs job. So, theoretically, everyone in that entire TOWN has a âshared reaper.â But thatâs nothing of any further significance than Pamela and Cole happened to die in proximity to one another, you know?
Or in 6.11, Dean was the âshared reaperâ for the dude who got shot pulling a robbery at the convenience store, the guy who had a heart attack eating pizza, the little girl in the hospital, and the nurse who was in a car accident. Does that mean anything in the larger scheme of things? I sincerely doubt it. Thatâs just... irrelevant, you know?
Or like Billie herself told Sam in 11.02:
Billie:Â It's over.Sam: What's over?Billie:Â You and Dean dying and coming back again and again. The old Death thought it was funny, but now there is one hard fast rule in this universe. What lives, dies. So the next time you or your brother bite it. Well, you're not going to Heaven or Hell; one of us, and Lord I hope it's me, we're gonna make a mistake and toss you out into the Empty. And nothing comes back from that. I know you're dying, I can feel it. You're unclean, in the Biblical sense. So I'll be seeing you again Sam, seeing you real soon. Name's Billie by the way.
And in 11.17, she specifically was prepared to divide Sam and Dean, permanently:
Billie: That's what I thought. It's cute though You pretending to save Sam for the greater good, when we both know you're doing it for you. You can't lose him. But even if Sammy could win the title bout, the answer would still be 'no.' The answer will always be 'no.' Game's over Dean. No more second chances. No more extra lives. Time to say bye-bye to Luigi, Mario.
She WANTED the job of tossing Sam and Dean both into the Empty, not because thereâs some woowoo connection between them, but because she believed at that time that they both deserved that specific punishment. Thatâs it.
Reapers are functionaries, facilitating the transition of the soul to the afterlife. Thatâs it.
But the question is based on an assumption that you seem to have pulled out of thin air, so take this reply how you will.

I read your post about 2x12 and I was reminded about 11x17. Michelle Tilghman, whose husband was killed after he became a werewolf, was told by Dean that things were going to be okay again, but Michelle said: "There's no normal after that." Sam and Mary think the supernatural itself is what ruins a life, but they're wrong. Which reminds me of this quote: "The problem isn't the problem. The problem is your attitude with the problem." Sam is taking the supernatural too personally, I think.
Heck, yes. Jack Sparrow to the rescue. :P
(the 2.12 post for reference)
And I think youâre referring to this bit here at the end?
(I mean I love Sam to death but heâs in this terrible headspace right now where he firmly believes that knowledge of and contact with the Supernatural is the âcrapâ that ruins lives. That knowing the truth of whatâs really out there is what makes it impossible to have a normal life and be happy⊠much like Maryâs thinking in s12. This magical thinking that if you can eliminate ALL the supernatural from the world you can just go back to suburbia and pretend none of it ever existed in the first place, and hasnât completely shaped who they all are as peopleâŠ)
And further to that, I think thatâs also the BMoLâs problem. How many years has it been since weâve seen this many monster cases? I mean, even earlier in the season Dean was getting BORED trying to find cases to work. Once Ketch (later with the help of Mary) began hunting down and killing ALL the monsters-- even the ones who were just trying to live peacefully-- I think two things happened.
And it was definitely not a problem at all at first. But it was their attitude to the perceived problem (that monsters should even have the audacity to exist on the same planet as them), that caused the REAL problem.
This is the same two-part equation that we saw unfolding in s6 (and to a degree in early s11 with the Darkness panic):
Someone starts killing large portions of the monster population
first the monsters panic and go into hiding... they split up from their usual stable home groups and head out alone into the world (which is probably why Dean had been bored earlier in the season... because the monsters were being extra-cautious not to draw attention)
some of them do no handle that isolation well (like the werewolf in 12.16, and also the vampire in 3.07 who turned Gordon)
some of them start banding together and fighting back (like we saw with Eve in s6)
The âmonster problemâ in the U.S. has always largely remained in balance with the human population enough that a small handful of hunters has been enough to cull the rogues who were drawing attention to themselves. There wasnât really any sort of precipitous rise in monster activity until the demons (and then the angels) started making trouble back during the apocalypse.
I mean, s4 was the first time the supernatural began making itself known en masse through all the âbreaking the sealsâ weirdness, and in s5 through the Horsemen being released, but none of that was directly CAUSED by Sam and Dean. They were trying to stop it.
As far as Samâs attitude about that now, heâs always had a really complicated relationship with the supernatural. He was the one with the visions, the one who felt like a freak, who wondered if he wasnât evil, or a monster, himself. And he was raised in the life (albeit sheltered from the truth longer than Dean was). He was raised by a hunter who believed that the only good monster was a dead monster. How much did that screw him up? Knowing his father thought he was a monster himself? Like... wow.
No wonder his go-to plan was to run like hell from hunting.
Iâm reminded of an old meta on Samâs healthy eating, how it was the one part of his life he could really control and that eating âpureâ things like organic food and salads and stuff was a way to minimize the âimpureâ part of himself that had been tainted by demon blood. And even the s8 trials were used as this metaphor for âpurity,â especially in 8.21. Itâs a weird sort of asceticism, and yeah itâs magical thinking at its finest, but this has always been a huge struggle for Sam.
The carrot the BMoL dangled in front of him-- the promise that they could truly end the supernatural interference in the world once and for all-- would be a huge temptation to him, just because of this painful drive to achieve some sort of âpurity,â or redemption for himself from the âtaintedâ part of himself.
And in that respect, this is a big part of what Dean was fighting against during the first half of s10 with the Mark of Cain (before the derailed the story and made it about the Darkness instead, but I wonât start talking about this lest it because a WTF S10?! rant, and nobody wants that :P). This notion of finding balance, reconciling the âgoodâ parts of oneself with the âdarkâ parts. (hello, 10.11, nice to see you again)
But in trying so desperately to solve this problem-that-wasnât-really-a-problem, the BMoL have inadvertently done exactly what theyâve always accused the Winchesters of doing. I mean, straight from Toni Bevellâs mouth at the very end of 11.23:
Toni: We've been watching you, Sam. What you've done, the damage you've caused -- archangels, Leviathans, the Darkness, and now, well -- the old men have decided enough's enough. I mean, let's face it, Sam. You're just a jumped-up hunter playing with things you don't understand and doing more harm than good. Now, where's Dean? The BMoL have caused the exact scenario that theyâd intended to prevent. Theyâve brought this all on themselves.
As to the werewolves in 11.17, yeah, I think their intent was to turn both Michelle and her husband, but theyâd only bitten him. He hadnât asked for it (hey, consent!) but once he felt the change and fed, he was so thrilled by being a werewolf that he wanted his wife to change with him, even against her explicit wishes.
But now Michelle knows the truth about whatâs out there (or at least about werewolves...). She saw her husband become a monster. There is no coming back from that (whether it be the loss of her loved one or just the innocence about the supernatural in general being lost forever). Thing is, in Michelleâs case, knowing the truth is what saved her life. Her husband had dismissed her insistence from the start that these were monsters that were holding them captive.
Michelle: W-What were they?Dean: Werewolves.Michelle: Told you they were monsters.Corbin: That's right, baby. You called it.Michelle: I thought werewolves needed night time, a full moon? We've been here for days. These guys, they can change any time.Dean: Yeah, thatâs âcause they were probably purebloods. And they can change any time. Any time they want.
No lies, no deception; Dean tells her the unvarnished truth. Corbin had doubted and dismissed it, and he ended up dead for it. Michelle believed and was WILLING to believe, and she lived.
I mean, the truth will set you free, right? Even if itâs a terrible, painful truth. And sometimes the "solutionâ is worse than the problem...

mittensmorgul ha risposto al tuo post âDo you think Mick is going to replace Cas??? Many people are scared...â
yeah, mick's a dark mirror for cas. He's basically failing all the lessons cas learned. he's supposed to be the example of what COULD have been Cas's story if he hadn't questioned heaven and rebelled. This both reminds us of how Cas DID succeed, but also points out how Mary still has a chance at redemption here if she learns from Mick's failure... (still doubt he's gonna live through 11.17, I'll be honestly shocked if he does)
^^^ there you go anonÂ

Manchester United have created the third âbestâ chances in the Premier League this season
Manchester United has the third & # 39; best & # 39; opportunities created in the Premier League because statistics reveal that the poor finish disappoints Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils
Manchester United is eighth in the Premier League table after four games
United has so far won one game against Chelsea in Old Trafford
But there are reasons to be cheerful for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players
They have the & # 39; best & # 39; opportunities created but their finishing has them
by Tom Farmery For Mailonline
Published: 12:06 BST, September 3, 2019 | Updated: 12:06 BST, 3 September 2019
Eighth in the Premier League table and only one victory from four games, there may be a good reason for Manchester United supporters to feel disappointed.
Indeed, if you are listed for the interview after the match of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Saturday, you may have thought that there was nothing overly wrong.
& # 39; We had many opportunities, many openings, but the last piece is simply missing. & # 39; Solskjaer said.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remained positive despite only one victory
& # 39; It is always getting there. We must learn to reach those shabby goals, not just the worldies. We are now pushing teams back and can bypass them.
& # 39; What is nice is that we not only resorted to panicked crosses and long balls and we played, and we should have scored to be honest. We feel numb and a little disappointed. In the last three games we have lost points that we certainly deserved to win. & # 39;
His comments are correct. United actually has the third & # 39; best & # 39; created opportunities in the top flight. According to the expected goals, a measure that is used to assess every chance in a game, United is high with 7.4.
Only West Ham (7.67) and champions Manchester City (11.17) score higher than United.
Marcus Rashford has scored twice in his four Premier League starts this season
OLE IS NOT WRONG ABOUT UNITED CREATING LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES SOURCE: OPTA Expected targets
[194541]
Manchester City 11.17 West Ham United Manchester United 7.4 Liverpool 6.64 Southampto n 6.07 Bournemouth 5.97 Tottenham Hotspur
5.7145 [194542
Chelsea 5.62 5.33
[194542] [194542]] Watford
5.33 Sheffield United 5.06 Norwich City 5.04 Burnley 4.88 Wolverers
]
Brighton and Hove Albion 4.53 Everton Aston Villa 4.14 Leicester City 4.13 3.75 ] Newcastle United 3.18
There is also good news about the expected goals. The addition of Harry Maguire to the defense has helped make Solskjaer's defense much tighter and more organized
There is evidence of the number of goals that United has awarded (four) and they have made their opponents worse up to the second limited opportunities (3.25).
Only Leicester â with 2.79 â has a better record. Again, it is a sign that United is much closer to another team that is defensively disciplined and effective.
The addition of Harry Maguire has helped United become much tighter in defense
While all the above points that United are in a false competitive position, it is undoubtedly their finish that keeps them from flourishing.
United has 63 shots in the league this season, but only 18 were on target. That is a shooting accuracy of 20 percent.
UNITED & NEW'S STRONGER DEFENSE IS DIFFICULT TO GET A PAST SOURCE: OPTA Team Expected targets against West Ham United 8.91 8.39 ] Tottenham Hotspur 6.83 Arsenal 6.41 Watford 6.29 Norwich City 6.28 6.28 6.28 ] Crystal Palace 6.28 Brighton and Hove Albion 5.54
]
Everton 5.23 Chelsea 5.13 Newcastle United 4.96 4.96 ] Wolverhampton Wanderers 4.81 4.74 ] Burnley 4.58 Sheffield United 4.57 Southampton Manchester City 4.27 3.25 ] Leicester City 2.79
It is time for one to line in the United States. Daniel James is their current top scorer â something he no doubt had not expected at any time of the season.
He has had a brilliant start to life in Old Trafford. Unfortunately the people around him don't shoot. Marcus Rashford has started all four games this season, but has only four goals â one from the penalty area â to show for his efforts.
Anthony Martial, in a more central position than before, scored two in three starts.
Solskjaer is convinced that it will all click. The opportunities are created, it is up to the United attack to take them.
Danie James might not have expected that he would be top of the scorecards for United

11.17
Today I decided to finally move on. Well, I had already decided, but now itâs been cemented in my head. I am not a hollow person who only cares about myself. Selfish. Hollow. Sometimes I think I am, but that was my behavior in the past if thatâs the case. Because I donât want to be that person. I do not want to be selfish and hollow. Is that me? I donât want it to be. I wonât let myself be that person.
Youâre at the club tonight. Youâre probably gonna find some random girl to hook up with. Oh, I see that youâre home now. Maybe you have her there with you. I know how vindictive you are. You thought, âShe has a guy in her room so Iâll have a girl in mine.â But youâre probably going to wake up in the morning feeling regret and sadness. That wonât make you feel better, after all. Might just make you feel worse. Since you did it out of revenge. But like I explained to you in the letter that our friend may or may not have shown you, it doesnât bother me. If you want to move on and find someone else, do it then. But do it because youâre looking for happiness, not because you want to get back at me in some way.
Or maybe you exceeded my expectations and just went home after drinking a lot. Maybe youâre just asleep right now. But, I seriously doubt that. Youâre way too immature to consider that. You came over here, not wanting to hear what I have to say, try to hurt me with your words. I know how much you meant to hurt me with them. Youâre furious and hurt over me. Of course youâre gonna try to remedy that by sleeping with some random chick.
But hey man. Tonight youâre sleeping with a random girl you donât know or have a connection with. Iâm sleeping with someone I really like. Someone I have a strong emotional connection with, whom I trust enough to be able to act out my kinks with. Who said he feels like heâs falling in love with me. Who looks at me with such a gentle gaze and loves to cuddle with me.Â
Iâm happy, and I sincerely wish you the same.

Forex - U.S. dollar inches higher but remains on the defensive

Investing.com â The U.S. dollar edged higher against a currency basket on Monday, but remained on the defensive amid concerns over and doubts over whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again this year.
The , which measures the greenbackâs strength against a trade-weighted basket of six major currencies, was at 93.31 by 07.17 a.m. ET (11.17 a.m. GMT), after ending Fridayâs session down around 0.6%.
The index has fallen around 2.2% so far this month and is down around 9% for the year to date.
The dollar remained on the back foot after data on Friday showing that while in the second quarter wage growth and inflation remained sluggish.
The subdued inflation outlook has raised doubts over whether the Fed will be able to stick to plans for a third interest rate hike this year.
The dollar had been supported by the Fedâs gradual policy tightening since late 2015 but the prospect that other major central banks may join it in tightening monetary policy has fed into recent dollar weakness.
Declining expectations for tax reforms and fiscal stimulus under the Trump administration have also weighed on the dollar.
Hopes that the Trump administration will be able to push through its economic agenda received another setback on Friday after .
The dollar was slightly lower against the yen, with at 110.51, after touching a one-and-a-half month low of 110.31 overnight.
The euro was a touch lower, with down 0.14% to 1.1733, still not far from 1.1777, its strongest level since January 2015 set on Thursday.
In the euro zone, data on Monday showed that , but underlying inflation rose to the highest in four years, giving the European Central Bank more leeway to begin scaling back its stimulus program in the autumn.
A separate report showed that the unemployment rate in the euro area ticked down to 9.1% in June from 9.2% in June, its lowest level since February 2009.
Sterling was slightly lower with at 1.3121, still within striking distance of the 10-month high of 1.3158 set on Thursday.
The Canadian dollar was weaker, with advancing 0.27% to 1.2467. The loonie rallied on Friday after stronger than expected economic growth data underlined expectations for another rate hike by the Bank of Canada in the coming months.

The Right Thing vs The Greater Good
Iâve been rewatching the middle bits of s11 on the TNT loop today (11.14-17), and throwing in 11.10 for Dabb putting his fingerprints all over the mytharc for s11, it really feels like this chunk of episodes is really when Dabb started exerting his influence all over the major themes of the series. And this group of episodes really clearly shows the sorts of themes that s12 is addressing in another way, especially since it seems like Dabb had been in cahoots with Bobo, and still is⊠:D
(pffft another way)
I included some of my chattybubble thoughts to Lizbob for both clarification and some just for funsies because I think Iâm hilarious. :D
Thereâs the extremely surface level stuff about the MoL involvement in Europe in the past, and bringing that plot to the surface (heh because those events culminated in the sinking of a submarine, I crack myself up).
Iâd like to point out that 11.14 and 11.16 BOTH deal with time travel, or stories that play with time in interesting ways, THIS is how you do time travel episodes. And the consequences of 11.14 are similar to the consequences of traveling to the past in the entire history of this show (4.03, 5.13, 6.18, 7.12âŠ) WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DREADED BUCKLEMMING TIME TRAVEL FIASCOES. Ugh. Okay. Sorry. Just had to say that.
Most of my thoughts on 11.15 and 11.16 ended up tidily summarized in our chats, so here, have a transcript of those, followed by my runthrough of the MAJOR INPORTINT THEMES in 11.17 that are still playing out mid s12. Under a cut, because I still havenât learned the meaning of the word âbrevity.â At least Iâm still funny:
(edited for readability, and focus in on the main points. Yâall donât need to hear such bits of this as me musing over the dozens of robins roosting in my birch tree or that Lizbob went out for a walk at one point...I bolded some key things if youâd prefer to just sorta skim this...)
Mittensmorgul: oh gosh mel's texting me, and I had to tell her that I'd rewound the "travel back in time" episode, she's like "ooh wrestling ep in 4 minutes!" and I had to tell her I'm "not caught up to real time yet." I hate time travel :P
Elizabethrobertajones: hahaha you're in a time loop. amazing :P are you up to the wrestling yet? Does it look any different from a Dabb vs performing Dean hindsight?
Mittensmorgul: It's a bit like an early "ghost of john winchester" preview to s12
Mittensmorgul: Heck I feel really bad for Harley, He believed in himself, turned down a demon deal, and ended up tortured and dead because of it :(
Elizabethrobertajones: yeah :< he was a Dean mirror at the time, right? I can't remember why
Mittensmorgul: He'd spent the first half grumpy at the "old guys." He was almost killed accidentally by the hangman's noose in the ring. the one whose funeral started everything. he was a suspect at first, they thought he was the demon for a bit. he was accusing gunner of being on drugs (he saw his dealer... er. demon). He was a hothead supposedly starting trouble, but really he was standing up for the "honor" (not the right word but whatever) of what they do, working for next to nothing night after night on the road. Ends up having his soul stolen by a demon against his will anyway
Elizabethrobertajones: right, he was a worst case scenario about souls being snatched, which we were worried about at the time
Mittensmorgul: and then in the end, after all Harley's yelling at Gunner about being dirty (via drugs, or via whatever...) Dean finally breaks through to Gunner with reason, with words\ Like Dean was an older and wiser version of Harley. Harley could never have guessed that GUnner's problem wasn't "drugs" but a demon... But Dean not only understood, he empathized, and talked Gunner into choosing another way
Elizabethrobertajones: heeey that sounds familiar :P
Mittensmorgul: honesty, accepting your responsibility, "It's never too late to do the right thing."Â ack gunner "I look in the mirror and I hate the face looking back at me. I got this coming." That hasn't been Dean in a while now
HELLHOUNDS
and oh my... Dean's "It's never too late to do the right thing" which he believes because "I have to." Because at the beginning his SOLE mission was finding a way to save Cas from having said YEs to Luci
And Sam's like, "If he even wants to be saved"
Dean says "He does, even if he doesn't know it yet"
RUFUS! I've been wanting to see this episode again since reading something about the parallel between Dean and Rufus via Ketch's arrival at the bunker
It's like Bobo, Dabb, and Robbie had all conspired to this theme of "fixing the past" via actions taken in the present by finding another better way
Itâs literally it's the entire point of this episode
Where Dean's "better" spell doesn't just trap the soul eater, it KILLS it and frees everyone who's stuck "outside of time and space" in its nest
[we had a rambling discussion of just how much this foreshadowed everything that happened in 11.23]
Elizabethrobertajones: so Dean walked in and walked out And clapped eyes on a long-lost parental figure on the way out :P
Mittensmorgul: BUT in doing so he ALSO frees Bobby's soul, and the trapped kids from the past
Elizabethrobertajones: freeing the things from the past. yikes :P Like Mary was freed from the past
Mittensmorgul: This is literally the theme of s12⊠Having better tools, better info, a more complete plan for saving everything, healing the past so everyone can move forward
I remember seeing something about how 12.15 paralleled Dean to Rufus... and some of 11.16 does... literally putting Dean into Rufus's exact position as they switch back and forth between past and present. BUT THEN IT'S BOBBY WHO GOES INTO THE SOUL EATER'S NEST WITH DEAN Like Sam and Dean have flipped roles here. Or that they're interchangeably both bobby and rufus...
ACK the soul eater telling Sam "Your brother wants to go to the Darkness, NEEDS to go, but I can keep him here safe, forever." but... they ended up finding a better way through words and balance
Elizabethrobertajones: it's the only time they've seen each other since Bobby died, and Bobby's still technically alive on HIS end, so Dean STILL has never interacted with him, unlike Sam who has twice plus a dream
Mittensmorgul: We're picking at the ghost of John this season, but Bobby's a big part of "father figures" for Dean, and he's been there subtly all season too
ACK the bottle Sam and Jody found in 7.12. And the first call Bobby gets when he's free is from Dean... in the past... They're talking about Bobby maybe having been there "outside of space and time" and that Bobby had never written up his notes about that case... when Dean says "Let's get drunk and never think about this again.â Which is probably what bobby did.
AND THEN THE SAME SONG IS PLAYING ON THEIR RADIO THAT PLAYED ON BOBBY'S AS THEY LEFT
Okay, that was the end of our chat because we had to run off and do other things for a bit, but I did go on to watch 11.17 again as well. And that just neatly tied everything back together again, and there were some things there I believe are KEY to what s12 is focusing on. Back in s11 all of these topics were being dealt with âexternally,â applied to situations beyond just Sam, Dean, Cas, etc. Yeah, Dean was central to the Chuck and Amara stuff (pffft as the firewall between light and dark), but now all these big themes are being applied to the Winchester family directly in a sort of  âAs above, so belowâ sort of way.
A LOT has changed since 11.15 when Dean needed to take a break from research to clear his mind, because heâd been âspinning his wheelsâ trying to find a way to save Cas from Lucifer. But now in 11.17 itâs Sam whoâs brought him this new case. Deanâs no longer spinning his wheels even if he hasnât gotten any traction on solving the Casifer problem yet, but his drive to succeed has taken on the KEEP GRINDING motto. He doesnât want or need to distract himself with this werewolf case, but Sam thinks itâs time for another âclear our headsâ break.
Dean drags his heels, but relents.
Like many of the other âciviliansâ they encounter in s11, Michelle readily accepts the supernatural. Corbin had originally ârejectedâ the idea that these could be âmonstersâ-- specifically werewolves, and in the end heâd become the monster himself.
One of the big themes of 11.17 is miscommunication. Everything from Corbin questioning why they needed a landline phone (Donât you have a cell phone?) because there was no signal service way out there in the woods, to Corbin lying about the extent of his own injuries and making Michelle doubt the evidence of her own eyes.
Michelle: Are you okay? I thought yesterday... Corbin: Just a couple scratches.
Sheâd seen him bitten, but he dismissed her concerns over and over again, even dismissing her âoutlandishâ claims when sheâs finally at the hospital being interviewed by the sheriff.
Hereâs another lovely pair of themes from s12 illustrated very concisely:
Corbin: I... look. Hey, Michelle's real sick, but she's got a chance. Him... he's slowing us down. And if they find us... Dean: We saved you, okay? We saved both of you. Corbin: It's three lives versus one.
Both the âyou vs ALL of youâ and the theme of âthe greater good.â Compare that to I love you, I love all of you, and >.>. But also that last line, âthree lives versus one.â Thatâs The Greater Good reduced to a simple math problem, which Corbin had rigged in his favor by âkillingâ Sam.Â
(also bizarre aside, are trees out to get Dean? Here he has a fight with a tree, and in 12.11 the spell that made him lose his memories was carved into a tree and Rowena described the spell as written in âthe Language of Trees.â Not to mention the bloody handprint on the tree that spurred him to giddily remember that their best friendâs an angel⊠okay, end random tree-related digression)
(no Iâm reopening the random tree-related digression to postulate that ALL of this is down to the Vanirâs apple tree Dean burned way back in 1.11. I swear, that apple pie was probably freaking worth it... between scarecrows, pie, apples and orchards-- thinking of 7.05 here too-- and just trees in general, I think it wasnât the broken mirrors from 1.05 that have haunted them all these years, but that dumbass scarecrow... okay, moving on for realsies now)
First itâs Samâs turn to try and convince Corbin and Michelle to go, to run, to save themselves and leave him behind. Corbin sees the truth of it, though. He knows Dean wonât leave Sam there to die alone. So he makes the executive (possibly influenced by his loss of humanity, that heâs already becoming a âmonsterâ) to suffocate Sam so that Dean will have a reason to leave.
For the greater goodâŠ
And at that point, Dean still needed to be convinced to leave Sam behind, but he promised to come back. He went along with the âgreater goodâ of saving the âinnocent peopleâ since he didnât know that one of them was literally and figuratively a monster.
This also neatly captures all the duality subtext in s12, as well. Nephilim, MoL vs hunters, people as monsters, monsters as people, angels as humans, angels living in harmony with a human soul, angels trapped in human bodies⊠thereâs just a lot of this in s12. Thereâs also the lengths someone will go to in the name of âlove,â however monstrous or misguided or even unwanted by the object of that love. More on that later.
Again, like 12.12 that told the story in a non-linear fashion, 11.17 employs a similar âmessing with timeâ storytelling device, only revealing the past through the events of the present. We only understand how the story got to this point via small glimpses of ârevisiting the pastâ through the events of the present. This was a HUGE theme of s11 (most clearly demonstrated in 11.14 and 11.16, as described above), considering the end result of s11 was a resolution of the original âproblemâ that resulted from the creation of the universe. S12 is doing almost the exact same thing, but instead of being framed around the Darkness being released and eventually reuniting with God, Mary has been released, bringing that universal conflict down to a human scale.
Back to the miscommunicationâŠ
Rather than explaining that there was another injured member of their party he needed to get back to attend to, Dean fights against the sheriff and ends up tasered and arrested. If heâd just used his words, the sheriff probably wouldâve let him run back to help Sam, but then Corbin wouldâve likely killed/turned Michelle without Dean there to intervene at the hospital, and he may have killed many others, as well.
Over and over, cell phones either donât work in this episode, or theyâre only working well enough to get a word or two through.
MISCOMMUNICATION IS THE EVOLEST VILLAIN.
Or maybe itâs actually this:
Corbin: I saved us. Look, you're hurt bad and... and I love you, Michelle. I can't lose you. I did what I had to do.
Seriously, if you hear I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO and donât simultaneously hear Kill Bill sirens⊠you should be hearing Kill Bill sirens...
Meanwhile, Corbin knows exactly what bit him, and when asked directly by the doctor, he only tells her âIâm good.â He lies, he refuses to answer, he downplays the truth when someone else speaks it, even to the point of dismissing Michelleâs point of view entirely.
In the worst rendition of âunsuccessful communication,â the sheriff is unable to contact Charlie the Ranger for assistance because heâs already been killed by the monsters.
In another example of miscommunication, even between two people who are actively trying to help one another, Dean refers to Billie as a âScary, crazy death machine,â and Michelle repeats back âCrazy, evil death machine.â She reinterpreted Deanâs words, and replaced âscaryâ with âevil,â and those words just arenât synonyms, you know? Just because somethingâs scary doesnât mean itâs evil. Proof that even when two people are essentially on the same page, they might very well have VASTLY DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDINGS AND INTERPRETATIONS of the situation at hand.
*coughRashomonEffectcough*
And⊠poor Michelle:
Michelle: Corbin? Corbin: Hey, baby. Please, don't be scared of me. I didn't want this. Okay, any of this, but... it's happened and it feels so... you'll see. [Michelle whimpers.] We'll be together. Michelle: No. Please. Corbin: Forever. Michelle: No!Â
Forced love, or forced life, overriding someone elseâs will, and yet Michelle decides what she wants for herself.
And then, a theme thatâs been sort of haunting the narrative since the pilot episode, and has now been resurrected right along with Mary:
Michelle: They said I could leave... [she sighs] an hour ago. But... where am I even supposed to go? After everything we survived together... [turning back to Dean] I watched the man I love die. There's no normal after that.
This is what happened to John Winchester. He watched the woman he loved die, and there was never any normal after that. Now Mary is back, without John, and thereâs never going to be any normal for her either. But that doesnât mean there can never be anything worth living for again.
