My main gripe with 11-nin iru (They Were Eleven) is that I actually really loved how Frol was central to the conflict. I love how their resolve to be a man is strong enough for them to want to die for it. To die here with honour and resolve even though unfulfilled. When all 10 of the crew members unanimously vote to save Frol's life even though it risks their chances of becoming a man, it feels horrible but it is the only right choice. It's an incredible scene because even though at first it feels like none of them support Frol's right to choose, it's more like the choice of Frol's life above all else was the easiest choice to make. Each one of them would've given up something when forfeiting the test but none of them hesitated.
All of that is undermined by, of all things, a marriage proposal by an earthman. Suddenly, their resolve (that they were willing to stake their life on) was just a whimsy and becoming a woman is what would make Tada love them... for what exactly? Frol doesn't even like Tada! No where in the movie did it show them having feelings for him. Maybe Tada had feelings for Frol, but hardly the other way around. And what's worse is that, in the sequel, when the two of them get engaged, Tada is fine(ish) with Frol experimenting with their gender. So that whole last scene never needed to happen because All Of Them Passed The Test Anyway so Frol Could've Become A Man or Anything They Would've Wanted. Frol's entire character is ruined by the shallow-ness of simply wanting to be a woman to please a man. Like, the whole movie gives a masterclass build-up for the best trans rep you've ever seen and completely destroys it.

There is one more way of counting, with “名(mei)”.
For example, when you enter a restaurant for dinner, the waiter will ask, “何名様ですか?(Nan-mei-sama desuka?)” which means “How many people are there?”
The difference between “人(nin)” and “名(mei)” is that “人(nin)” is just for counting, and “名(mei)” is used for groups or organizations whose members are identifiable, such as number of attendants of the meeting, number of guests reserved at the hotel, number of guests at the wedding, and so on.
In case of “名(mei)”, reading way of counting is simply number + 名(mei).
1 person : 一名(いちめい/ichi-mei)
2 people : 二名(にめい/ni-mei)
3 people : 三名(さんめい/san-mei)
4 people : 四名(よんめい/yon-mei) ×しめい
5 people : 五名(ごめい/go-mei)

If you feel it hard, you can use just “人(nin)” anytime. It’s enough if you can understand “名(mei)” when you hear it.

'11 nin iru!' translating to 'and they were 11' is a 1970s manga by the queen of sci-fi Shoujo herself Moto Hagio.
As a final test 10 cadets are isolated on a spaceship with the premise that they will pass if they can survive without outside help. All good but there seem to be 11 cadets. Someone is lying and might even be dangerous. Asking the examiners could mean they fail.
STARS: 🌕🌕🌕🌘🌑 (concept deserves a 5/5 but it's a bit rushed for me)
TRIGGER WARNINGS: typical era misogyny (the author has apologised and changed some of the language for the re-release, but some is too ingrained) p.d: author is a woman
PERSONAL OPINION: this was a total page turner and can totally understand why they call this author the queen of sci-fi. It was addictive and left me wanting way more of this. The end was a bit abrupt which makes me believe it would be amazing if it just got left a big more space to breathe.
ACCESSIBILITY: While not mainstream, this manga and author is an absolute pillar of manga history, which means there are several translations to almost every language and even collectors editions. Due to the shortness of the story it might be found in a collection of Mangas of this author.

State of scans
yo yo yo, I don’t use social media ever please get me in the habit of updating this thing. I’m currently operating out of MangaDex so most of my stuff’s gonna go through there. Hopefully, with new members, we can see the light of day here. So here’s some stuff going on:
11-nin Iru!:
- Cleaning, slicing, scanning, etc, is done for not just this series, but for Zoku 11-nin iru too!! More on the latter below but yeah, the most monotonous part of this process is writing scripts/transcripts, so while I get those done (found a lovely assistant to help me) I'll probably be able to release chapters 3 and 4 close to one another. Huzzah for help!
- Expect ch. 3 within the week (if you're reading this it's prolly cause it already came out yay me) and ch 4 in February.
Zoku 11-nin Iru!:
- I have a translator! And a backup proofreader!! Huzzah!!!!! In addition, I've already scanned, sliced, etc, and am just awaiting scripts to begin typesetting. Will notify here before anywhere else of how that's gonna go.
- Expect ch. 1 within late February, early March. First time the series will be available in English!!!!
Shoujo no Kuni (the group aka me hiiiii):
- I want to start working on other projects while my friends sort out their parts in this one. If anyone or any group is looking to work together, I currently have scans for:

It's a fascinating and unique mixture of LGBT theming, dystopian science fiction, psychological elements, medical science, and lovely josei art by the author Aniya Yuiji, a brilliant writer who has not really been acknowledged by the West and deserves some exposure. I want this one to be my Big Project and am willing to put up the brunt of the work to see it realized, but I will need some dedicated translators to help me on board!

A massive old starship becomes the theatre in the final stage of an entrance exam to a prestigious academy for a group of applicants who unexpectedly number 11 instead of 10. Soon they find themselves fighting to not only pass this test but, for their lives in famed creator Hagio Moto’s hard sci-fi title They Were 11!

Popular enough for multiple adaptations in various mediums over the decades They Were 11 was the first of Hagio’s stories to be brought over in English. Initial exposure came in 1992 with the 1986 animated film release, the comic following in 1995 when the North American market was still presenting Japanese comics like their American comic counterparts in floppies. (Further her sci-fi collection A, A′ would premiere in April 1995 in Manga Vizion Vol. 1 #2.) They Were 11 is another comic Hagio has revised a bit over the years going through printings and editions, (coupled along with a sequel not translated to English). This title is however still undeniably of 1975. Influenced somewhat by Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1969 sci-fi classic novel The Left Hand of Darkness of which a primary theme was gender and society, like Le Guin’s novel modern audiences could wish some aspects were less filtered through a particular lens.
So much in this comic is conceptualized by societal roles and behaviour. A key character, Frol comes from a society where one is assigned the gender of man or woman as they reach maturity. Frol uses coarser and what is regarded as masculine language further desiring the status and freedom afforded men on their planet, hoping to earn the government’s determination in aligning with this by being accepted to the academy. Along with thereby escaping becoming another bride (it’s also a polygamous culture) for an older man. Classic issues of equality and self-determination. But as feelings grow between the young Terran man Tada and Frol the latter considers rethinking that rejection of becoming a woman and wife. One might forgive some things as gender and sexuality are complicated and messy. But as with the male chauvinism readily on display how these subjects are expressed and presented, it is hard to not believe the work isn’t imbued with some very common tendencies in cultures that are nonetheless not good.
For this comic with characters who hail from across the galaxy, gender is limited and, in most cases, based on the external. Beside another applicant that comes from a species that recognizes a bit more than a binary because of their process of biological reproduction, no one really seems to buck the notions at play except Frol and even then, only so far. There is a conflation where the gender of the person Frol is attached to appears to define their own. Heteronormative as a word may trace back to 1991, but the attitude existed well before then. There’s not really a great sense of sexual identity either in this comic and in the real world, like gender there is fluidity and a whole variety out there. Even when sometimes a relationship or the possibility of one is a catalyst for greater understanding or discovery of self, identity is personal, internal.
Reflected time and again more in the comic is others’ perception of a person. People do indeed treat one differently by what they judge largely through observation of various factors. The negative outcomes being denying an individual’s identity, validity and human(oid) rights. Frol’s patriarchal culture deciding for its citizens (based on something as illogical as birth order at that) along with other aspects of their lives is immensely dreadful. Something young girls or other people in Japan and around the world I bet could relate to or empathize with. Something that also makes They Were Eleven compelling today despite strides made around many social issues. Still, personally I hope the future centuries on is frankly a lot queerer. Too despite areas for critique (there’s further some artistic license when it comes to science), I’d still like to see They Were 11 brought back into print in English. If Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness was a thought experiment, one still prompting discussion today, a comic springing off that by an accomplished artist no less can surely be of some value as well.

Also included in the 1996 anthology Four Shōjo Stories from VIZ ISBN# 9781569310557 which incidentally was not approved by Japanese publisher Shogakukun so hence its rarity
The 1986 OVA was licensed in English by Central Park Media and released on both VHS and DVD, now OOP
