A tear slips out of Neil’s eye as he smiles at Andrew, “I’ve wanted to say yes for a long time.”

“No time like the present.”

Neil’s shoulders sag in relieved defeat, “It’s always been a yes with you Andrew. That hasn’t changed, very little has apparently.” Neil says. Andrew wants all of Neil’s always, all of his futures, all of his forevers, and he wants Neil Josten.

Andrew presses his lips to Neil’s for the first time in five years and he feels for the first time like he is home.

Wip Wednesday - 11/6/24 Urban Legend SY

Back to sufficient energy levels so maybe I can participate again next week! Finally made progress on this wip, and I'm slowly chugging through a few others, so hopefully a few more of these posts will go up in the next few days

Yue Qingyuan was having what could be described as a good day. No disciples had to be sent to Qian Cao; no inter-peak raids occurred, and there was not even a public argument between his martial siblings. So, of course, as Yue Qingyuan was taking the time to plow through his paperwork after teaching his disciples, some of his martial siblings arrived. He didn’t dislike these visits; he found them vital to retaining the close bond martial siblings needed. However, when they arrived unannounced and with many young eyes following them, they became a bit more troublesome. Mu Qingfang and Liu Qingge weren’t an unusual pair. However, those visits were usually because their shidi refused medical care, and Mu Qingfang was using Yue Qingyuan as a last resort. The pair sat down at the low table in his office; they were quiet as Yue Qingyuan allowed his Head Disciple to prepare tea. The soft sound of the door closing signaled Mu Qingfang to begin. “Yue-shixiong, it seems that Liu-shidi did not read any of the letters or summons sent to him over the past month.” The doctor didn’t hesitate to cut directly to the issue. Even though it caused Liu Qingge to glance away when Yue Qingyuan turned towards him. Yue Qingyuan knew he was hopeless against his younger martial siblings; he tried not to make known amongst them, but they had spent nearly twenty years together already. So he really couldn’t do much more than sigh as Liu Qingge avoided looking at him. “I see, and where is Yuan-shidi?” 

Liu Qingge frowned, shifting slightly in his seat, “He’s still with some of his friends, I think. Dealing with beasts appearing where they aren’t supposed to.” Yue Qingyuan nodded slowly. So, the ascension would have to be pushed back further. “Would you be able to find him?” Liu Qingge nodded shortly, “Likely, he told me where they were going to head next.”  Yue Qingyuan smiled, ignoring the look Mu Qingfang was shooting him, “Then you should be able to lead Shen-shidi to him as well.” Liu Qingge jerked his head back towards Yue Qingyuan, his silver eyes wide. “Shen Qingqiu?” He snapped, "Why him?" Yue Qingyuan didn't flinch, simply keeping his eyes firmly on his shidi. "Shidi would know if he read the summons, wouldn't he?" Liu Qingge frowned at him, but leaned back, accepting the task. Nodding slightly Yue Qingyuan turned to Mu Qingfang, who appeared to be stifling a smile. "Thank you Mu-shidi, I'm sure you have other tasks to be handled." The doctor glanced over at Liu Qingge once more before nodding and standing. "This shixiong wishes Liu-shidi luck in his mission." He said mildly, ducking out of the room quickly, the door shutting softly behind him. Liu Qingge scowled darkly at the wall behind Yue Qingyuan, and he simply couldn't hold his tongue this time. "Surely Liu-shidi is not so opposed to working with his shixiong?" Liu Qingge was quiet for a moment before crossing his arms, his eyes moving from the wall behind Yue Qingyuan to the taller man's eyes. "You should ask him." Yue Qingyuan wasn't quite sure what lurked in those silver eyes staring at him. This wasn't usually how Liu Qingge spoke about Shen Qingqiu, he seemed more resigned in a way. Yue Qingyuan allowed the silence to settle before he nodded, "I will explain to Shen-shidi about the mission, I believe Qi-shimei is already waiting for you with Liu-shizi." As the door shut behind Liu Qingge, Yue Qingyuan sighed softly, they both knew he wouldn't ask.

WIP Wednesday - 11/6/24 - Michael!Dean x Reader

A/N: This is an excerpt from "This Time The World Burns and You With It" that I've been working on since mid-July. Working on this has gotten me through some recent stressful personal stuff (don't ask me why it's this project or this character lol) and kept my writing going despite the absence of any kind of energy or time and the desire to just give it all up. I really do wish we had gotten more time with this character with Jensen playing him in the show but what we did get is pure gold.

You couldn’t even make sense of why you felt the way you did, especially after seeing the evidence of what he’d done just mere moments before hearing Maggie’s scream, watching her painfully die, and knowing everything he’d done on Apocalypse World and planned to do here. How could you feel anything for a monster like that?

Something you kept in mind when Michael showed up in your motel room a few days after the incident, once again wearing Dean. You tightened your grip on your angel blade though you knew you wouldn’t really use it; you wouldn’t kill Dean for your mistakes. Naturally, without lifting a finger, Michael knocked it out of your hand before he sent you flying up against the wall, holding you there. 

“That’s a different greeting than I got the last time we saw one another,” he mocked you in that voice that was anything but Dean’s.

“It’s the only greeting you’ll be getting from now on, you son of a bitch,” you hissed at him through gritted teeth.

“It’s a shame. I got the impression you wanted me to stick around.” He came even closer with his crooked smile.

“Not anymore.”

Green eyes stared into yours as he leaned in closer. “Let’s test that theory, shall we?”

Before you could respond, his lips were on yours and just like that, your brain short-circuited and you were kissing him back. Within moments, he released you and you grabbed at him, keeping yourself from falling while also fervently kissing him, your fingers knotted in his hair. His arms came around you and he turned, walking you both to the bed.

Raine says goodbye to their students and Steve and follows Eber back to Darius. “Can you teleport us up there?” Raine asks him. Getting all of them back home immediately after the draining spell ended just about killed Darius. Steve said he was fine, just exhausted and out of magic, but Eber wasn't convinced. He stayed curled up on his chest and purring for several hours until Darius woke up again. “I'm not sure if my bile sac’s recovered yet,” he admits. “Far simpler spells than that still ache.” Raine nods as if they'd been expecting that answer. “Better not to risk it, then. We'll fly.” Raine and Darius both have palismen, kept carefully hidden since they became coven heads. Eber does not. He'll have to ride with one of them, because the alternative is to summon a flying beast. Eda’s beast might not appreciate that much. They're trying to capture it with minimal fuss, not start a fight.

“Yeah,” Hunter says, turning around. His palisman looks back at Caleb's empty grave for another moment. They cross the bridge of vines Willow grew one at a time. As soon as everyone’s on dry land, she whispers to them and they shrink back to the little island. The Nocedas lead them back into the center of town, pointing out several landmarks along the way. Really, though, that statue of the Wittebane brothers is all they need to know. It's hard to get lost with that looming over them. There's a transport demon right across the street from it that Camila says can take them home. They're not going home yet, of course. They need clothes and food, so they enter a little bootique (“It's just a thrift shop,” says Luz) and start looking around. “Just the essentials for today,” Camila suggests. “Maybe three days’ worth of clothes, and if you need anything else we’ll come back.”

“There's a sequel?” “Unpublished,” Luz says. “It isn't very good. We were in a… crunch. Didn't have much time to plan it out. It was mostly a distraction so we could escape, you know?” Okay, so maybe there wasn't much effort there. But it's the sequel to his favorite book, he’s still curious. “What happens in it?” Hunter asks. Luz hesitates. “Really, it's bad. You don't want to hear about it.” “Actually, I'd like to know too,” says Willow. “It can't be that bad if you wrote it,” Amity says with a disgustingly sappy smile. Luz whines a little bit. “It's… well, uh. The first book ended with Luzura dying to save the kingdom.” Vee covers her ears again, but from her soft huff of laughter, Hunter guesses she doesn't actually care that much. “So since we were, like, making up after a big fight and King killed my character, it seemed like… the best way to resolve that would be to, kind of. Resurrect her in the next book.” … Oh.

Wip Wednesday 7/31/24

These are hella late but here are my sentences for 7/31 :)

Perfect season 20-22 for:

“I need you to get some information to the little lord.”

“Ah, I see. And what exactly would I be telling him?”

“Riko is getting out of control. He sent some of the freshman Ravens over to Palmetto to kill one of our players.”

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Yes. the player who was attacked saw who it was and I’m sure there’s a paper trail that leads back to the side branch if not to Riko himself.”

“Alright, I’ll check it out and relay your message. Is there anything else?”

“Thank you, and no, there’s nothing else right now.”

“Very well then, I’ll let you go.”

“Bye,” Neil says, and hangs up the phone, handing it back to Andrew.

He pockets the phone, leans back on his elbows and stares out at the parking lot. Neil doesn’t feel like going back inside so he sits with Andrew and stares at him, admiring how the sun lights up his hair and makes his eyes glow gold.

Neil finishes signing his email, heart pounding in his ears and sends it off before he can think about it too much. He quickly closes his laptop and leans back in his chair, folding his arms behind his head and then takes a few calming breaths.

He does this until he feels his heart slow and gets up to get ready for the day. 

Neil barely makes it through his first class; the professor monotonically goes over the syllabus and then keeps them there for another half hour talking about himself and how he ended up in ‘such a fine establishment’. He resorts to alternating between drawing on the handout given to them at the start of class and stabbing himself in the thigh with a pen.

He meets up with Jean for a late lunch and they both talk about how their classes are going so far.

“I’m just saying, that class is shit. I don’t understand why we need to take it.” Neil says, referring to his undergraduate studies class.

“We have to take it because someone,” Jean replies, stabbing a piece of broccoli with his fork, and then pointing it at Neil, “wanted to explore Europe instead of going to college when we graduated.”

“Whatever,” Neil says, swatting the broccoli away. “It's not like I made you come with me.”

“True, but irrelevant. Besides, if you had gone on your own, who would have been there to take care of you after all of the times you got into fights and needed patching up.”

“I could have done it myself or gone to a clinic,” Neil says, already knowing he’s going to lose this argument.

“Bullshit. I’ve never met someone who hates hospitals more than you do. Also I’ve seen you try to patch yourself up, you’re pretty shit at it.”

“Alright, Alright,” Neil says, putting his hands up in surrender, “you win.”

Lola wastes no time getting into his space, knife in hand, crowding him even more into the car door. 

“So, Junior,” Lola says, like she’s gossiping with a friend, “I’ve just got to know, where’d Mary run off to?” She presses the tip of the knife into his cheek when he doesn’t immediately answer, just enough to draw a drop of blood. 

Nathaniel doesn’t flinch despite the pain he feels and replies, “Like I’d ever tell you that.”

“Maybe,” Lola says, “but I have a feeling you’ll tell me sooner or later.”

Nathaniel wants to question how she plans to do that, but keeps his smart mouth shut, his mind already coming up with multiple ways that she could.

Aaron can tell he’s struck a nerve, the bulging veins on either side of Hill’s forehead giving away just how much he has. 

Halsey steps between them, redirecting Hill’s attention to him and Aaron takes the chance to give Kevin a once over.

Aaron hadn’t thought much of him when he first walked in, having been more focused on Hill. However, now that he’s really looking, he notices how muscular Kevin’s arms are, his jade-green eyes and how he towers over most of the people in the room, including himself.

Aaron turns his attention back to Hill and Halsey, “I look forward to seeing you in class,” Hill says, but Aaron can tell he is still pissed from earlier despite the smile he wears.

Akhtar Pasha rushed into his life like a river rushed into a ravine, flooding the barren caverns of his heart with life and noise and softening its harsh, jagged edges. He was loud but shy, strong but gentle, simple but passionate. His laughter boomed like a thunderclap. His heart was as huge as his appetite. He was polite to a fault and generous with his smiles. He was a terrible liar. He was an ammi's boy through and through. He ate like Ram's little brother did- messy and overenthusiastic and heedless of etiquette- which made his heart both sing and cry in the same beat.

Akhtar's presence was the soft rain in the scorched wasteland that was Ram's life. Ram glanced into his eyes and found no hate in them, just a sincere fondness. Akhtar called him bhaiyya, not bastard or traitor or coward or filthy British dog. TF&TS Meta: Cree Deeproots's Character Sheet

Since I am posting another chapter later this week, no WIP Wednesday excerpt today! However, I usually throw out a meta post before each chapter to tide people over.

I will post a little late this week! Unfortunately, work has been crazy, and this week continued that trend. I am hoping to update by Sunday evening.

Edit: Unfortunately, I have had to bump my planned posting date for Chapter 8 back to 11/24 due to work going haywire. I am still writing, and I'll post another WIP for the next chapter this Wednesday, as well as another meta post the following Wednesday. I'll hopefully have some reprieve by then and intend to get back to a regular 2-week posting schedule after that.

This post discusses how I developed the character sheet for Cree.

The story itself will get into Cree’s backstory and characterization, so this is going to focus primarily on mechanics and items. Here is her character sheet.

As mentioned in a prior post, Cree was at least level 13 when the Nein first encountered her in Eiselcross because she used Firestorm against Gelidon in 123, then at least 15 in 133 because she used Earthquake. Her holy symbol was the gold/crystal pendant with Lucien’s blood that the Nein first saw in 117. She also had the Cape of the Mountebank, first spotted in the same episode and then used in 133.

Like the rest, Cree is starting at level 14. Unlike the others, I did not roll Cree’s stats. I tried to come up with what made sense narratively. Another wrinkle was that Wizards released an update to Tabaxi in 2022, but I opted to go with the racial features from Volo’s because that’s what Matt would have used at the time of the campaign.

Cree cast slow on the Nein as they escaped in 123, and Fjord successfully made a wisdom save with 19. The highest failure was 14, so spell save DC is 15-19. The DC is 8 plus proficiency bonus plus wisdom modifier, and at level 15, her PB would be +5, while it rises to +6 at level 17. So, assuming she was level 15, her wisdom modifier would need to be at least +2 and no more than +6. If she had been level 17, her modifier had to be at least +1 and no more than +5. Either way, that doesn’t tell us much about her wisdom score, especially if she had an item that could have factored in. Any reasonable cleric would pick wisdom for their highest stat, so unless she rolled shit and never took an ASI, I would expect her modifier to be at least +4. However, since she was an end game mini-boss, I thought +5 seemed reasonable. Thus, Cree’s wisdom score is 20 because it maxed out at some point, and considering that cleric is SAD compared to blood hunters, I think she would have prioritized it. Thus, assuming she got at least one good roll to assign to Wisdom, I chose 18 base, and one ASI was used to raise the 18 to a 20.

Logistically, Cree’s Con score only mattered as an antagonist for determining her Con saves because Matt usually needed to buff health pools against the large party. So, for all we knew, it was 6 and he gave her a ton of HP. However, if we were constructing her sheet as if she was a PC, her next highest priorities were constitution, then dexterity. Blood clerics have some BH-like abilities to sacrifice HP for benefits, so she needed a decent health pool. Considering her self-sacrificial behavior, I felt that a player would have strategized for that, and it made sense narratively if she managed to survive as an orphan in the Run and eat “muster” all the time while out adventuring. Since I gave her 18 for Wisdom, I chose 16 for Con.

Dex was next. Higher initiative and AC were also important. Cree’s AC in her final fight was 19. AC is usually armor mod + dex mod + shield(?) + enchantment/item mods, so that could be all sorts of combinations. Matt didn’t mention she had a shield, but we know her armor was enchanted because he mentioned all the Tombtakers’ armor glowed during a detect magic in 117. Clerics are proficient with Medium armor, but not Heavy armor, and while she could have taken a feat, Matt didn’t mention that she had anything more than heavy leathers and furs—no chain or plate. Medium armor also caps the dex mod at +2, and heavy armor doesn’t add dex mod at all. Thus, she probably had studded leather armor, which is 12 + dex mod + enchantments. If she had +3 armor (possible, but very expensive), then her dex mod had to be +4. If she had a shield (which Matt didn’t mention), then maybe she had +2 armor (reasonable for level 15) and +3 dex. Finally, in the last fight against the Nein, Matt mentioned that Cree rolled a super low initiative, but the lowest the Nein got was a 12. Initiative is normally just the roll plus dexterity modifier, so that doesn’t really tell us anything about her Dex score. Realistically, that meant Cree’s dex modifier was probably around 3-4 and she had items or enchantments to add another 3-4, totaling +7 to her AC. Probably not an additional cloak, a spell caster staff, or a shield because Matt didn’t mention her using them and the Nein only looted the necklace and the Cape of the Mountebank. (Or maybe her holy symbol gave AC?) Tabaxi get a +2 to Dex, so I opted to give Cree a 14 that was then raised to 16.

Strength could have really gone anywhere. There’s no D&D mechanic reason for her to have high/low Str according to what we saw in the stream. Her weapon was a war pick, not a finesse weapon, so it would have been her melee attack stat, and therefore it’s a safe assumption that the mod was at least 0 (not <10). However, she never actually used that weapon. So we just have ~vibes~. Because of how Matt played her (immediately firing off her biggest spells at Gelidon), I decided I would use this as a vanity stat rather than something meant to used regularly in combat. I got the impression that she leaves the melee combat to the rest of the Tombtakers and she stays the hell away from it. Considering her time in the Run meant she would be pretty athletic and I already have her +3 to Dex, I gave her 16 strength to match. That makes her excellent at climbing and jumping even without proficiency in the Athletics skill, which I felt was appropriate for the one tabaxi in the group.

Int and Cha are Cree’s dump stats. Strategically, neither is important for a cleric. Narratively, she’s an uneducated orphan, and Lucien no doubt did most of the talking. Based on how Cree spoke, I don’t expect she had much of a Cha stat, though I doubt it was a negative modifier. She was polite and courteous to the Nein until Lucien was back, and then she was rather jealous/envious. So, she can get along, if she wants to, but I figured her Cha wasn’t higher than Lucien’s. Thus, I gave Int 8 and Cha 9, which received a +1 to 10. The only reason I didn’t give her lower Int was that she would have received some education at the Orders. Most of the things she would have learned with the Nightback Clan were wisdom skills, and she’d have relied upon those in the Run as well, and whatever she didn’t know about the town itself, Lucien did, so there wasn’t much pressure to expand her specialty.

If you think I’m being overly generous about Cree’s stats, maybe take a look at Jester’s level 2 stats. That’s right. Level 2.

Cree’s background was relatively easy to choose, though I had considered Urchin. Her experience as an acolyte at the Claret Orders was far more relevant to her skills and character than her time as an orphan in Shadycreek Run. It also made sense that Religion was the one Int stat she’d be good at.

Feats were interesting. War Caster was an obvious choice for D&D strategy, and it made perfect sense for how she would have been trained at the Orders and her experiences with the Tombtakers. The Vital Sacrifice feat was not available at the time of C2, but the flavor fit her very well. Matt had also let her exceed the mileage limit of her Crimson Bond ability (10 miles), or characters flagrantly and repeatedly lied about her ability to track blood further than that and she used some other spell (Commune?) to hunt people down on the Gentleman's behalf considering Crimson Bond is limited to 2 uses per day. (I exceeded that in this chapter.) The narrative reason is she just has a knack for hemocraft, so she figured out how to tap her own vitality to fuck with people.

Items were a challenge. They had to be sensible for her level and not push her into high-level enemy territory. The most pertinent decision was whether she had anything she'd had in Aeor. The first times we saw Cree with her holy symbol necklace, the Cape of the Montebank, and a scroll of Control Weather were after the Nein caught up to the Tombtakers in Eiselcross. However, as a cleric, she wouldn’t have needed the scroll because she could do that at level 15 (which she also needed to be for Earthquake). And if Cree went so far as to criticize the Nein for being rich kids because of the tower, she wouldn’t have spent the coin on buying the scroll when she could just do it herself. Maybe the explanation was she hit level 15 after that, but then there’s the question of why was she so much lower than Lucien’s level and how did Matt expect Lucien (level 17) to be enough to balance the rest of the Tombtakers against a larger group. Maybe Matt gave her the scroll as a clue that the Tombtakers expected this to be a one way trip, but there were other ways of doing that.

Instead, what made sense to me was that Lucien looted the cape and scroll from DeRogna. Think about it. I don’t know if Cree would have just clung to a rare magic item for the 2 years that Lucien was dead, especially one that wasn’t useful and we had no indication it had sentimental value. Neither the cape nor the scroll made sense for that. But Matt also mentioned that DeRogna’s room had already been tossed and looted when the Nein found her body, so Lucien robbed her on top of taking his book back. What would he steal if his plan was a one way trip to the Astral Sea to become a god? Magic items! But the Tombtakers certainly would have already brought weapons and armor, and DeRogna wouldn’t have bothered, so it had to be other items—like a teleportation cape to avoid danger and a scroll to conserve spell slots. Like a rich person would stock for a trip where bodyguards handle all the monsters. Thus, Cree doesn’t have either of those in TF&TS.

There’s also the issue of Cree’s holy symbol. As I’ve mentioned before, it doesn’t make sense for her to currently have a necklace with Lucien’s blood for her to be a cleric of the Nonagon. He’s undead, and while she is tremendously faithful, it’s a whole extra step beyond worshipping a childhood friend to worship a dead one, and then another step to worship an undead one. I had to be able to reconcile it with the facts that she went to Zadash and never once checked on his grave, then let “Lucien” (Molly) go off by himself with strangers and not checking on his blood vial even once to see if he was okay. She believed the Nein the first time when they returned to Zadash and claimed Lucien had parted ways; if she suspected he was dead, she would not have been so calm or courteous. So she trusts him enough to do as he asks, but with him dying “twice” (though once was actually Molly), I don’t think she would have actually worshiped Lucien as a god by that point in time. There’s also the fact that Lucien’s body is in someone else’s control right now, so there’s a disconnect between undead Lucien and his blood. For the premise to make sense, his blood couldn’t be part of Cree’s holy symbol, and the timeline of events suggests that she didn’t start worshiping him as a god until after he came back to life.

The Raven Queen absolutely would not have worked as Cree’s goddess in this plot either. The Matron hates the undead, so even if Cree had remained faithful to her, that likely would have had perilous consequences for trying to cast any spells while Cree helped Lucien. Any attempt to bring him back as undead would have been an issue too. (Yes, I know that clerics have tons of necromancy spells, especially Blood Clerics, and there’s no mechanic prohibiting it, but this story has to have some logic to it.)

Thus, the Somnovem were Cree’s gods. I couldn’t think of a single reason why a gold/crystal necklace with someone’s blood would be suitable for the Somnovem, so I had to make up a holy symbol. That’s excellent for story purposes because the new one is packed with symbolism. It’s an eye carved into a silver coin with a ruby chip embedded as the iris. It’s obvious to anyone seeing it that Cree had to improvise, that she made it herself, and that she didn’t go overboard with making it especially pretty or ornate. Easy to carry, hide, and hold. Practical and without excess.

Then, where’s the gold/crystal necklace? And why was that one so fancy compared to the coin? Hmmm.

I figured she would keep her Raven Queen symbol, though it likely cracked due to her broken faith. She’s sentimental, and even if she stopped worshiping the Matron, that would have been a huge part of her life. It remains to be seen whether her background feature would still work.

I decided to make the coin a Guardian Emblem because Cree didn’t use her actions to defend/heal the Tombtakers in combat except for one Cure Wounds on Lucien. She plays offense like Jester does, but even more aggressively because she threw out her highest level spells as attacks in her first two turns against Gelidon, leaving her with fewer options when the Tombtakers absconded that night with the bag of holding. Thus, having a reaction to significantly reduce damage taken would be a good option for her so she can still focus on attacks.

Coming up with a second item was such a pain. What would she have kept for so long without adventuring? What would she have bought? Probably nothing, but surely she wouldn’t sell off everything she ever had when trying to hide from DeRogna. Eventually, I felt a Ring of Protection made sense because it’s something that would be useful in the event that anything ever went sour with the Gentleman, or if DeRogna tracked her down, and it would lean into the “stop dying so I can kill stuff” mentality. Plus that gives her some AC.

Cree doesn’t have armor, but she has a shield. Why would she have armor? She’d have sold that for sure, and finding something suitable for a tabaxi in the Empire probably isn’t easy. It would be easier to pick up a shield, or for any of the others to buy for her, on the way out of Zadash than find armor that would fit. Plus there’s the strategy of it: anyone starting a fight in the Evening Nip is going to focus on the bouncers and bodyguards in armor, not the blood lady in a robe and costume jewelry—until she blights them. (She needs to buy some armor.)

Cree had a war pick in Eiselcross, and it’s not the type of weapon someone would choose unless they really liked the feel of it. It has no benefits. There’s numerous other 1d8 weapons that are versatile, finesse, or have other special features that make them better options. No, that was a character choice. Listen, Cree is a blood cleric that formerly worshiped a death god and recently brought her best friend back as an undead because she had nightmares and a madness inducing vision about it. Gouging people with a glorified mining pick is probably the most normal thing about her.

Lastly, Cree has a lot of money. Have you never met a person who suddenly started making obscene amounts of money after growing up poor? If they didn’t start spending it like an idiot, they hoarded it for What-Ifs out of paranoia, at least until the shock of having money wore off. Considering Cree’s behavior, it takes her a good while to get over things, and she absolutely seems like the kind of person to hoard her savings. Thus she’s barely spent any coin other than what was necessary for reagents, like diamonds, diamond dust, silver dust, etc. (You want holy water? It costs how much? We have holy water at home.)

Darius pulls his palisman out of his hair. He gives Raine an expectant look until they summon their own staff. The fox palisman is fine. He blinks at Eber and Darius, probably unused to being seen on a staff. But the staff itself… is held together with glue and layers of tape. Because Raine smashed it. Eber still cannot believe they actually did that. “Can you even fly like that?” Darius asks skeptically. “Eda said it's fine,” Raine says. “It's a temporary fix, but it won't fall apart just from flying.” Well. Eber knows who they're riding with. “... I don't think I should take any passengers though,” the bard adds after an awkward pause. Ha! They thought not. Eber jumps onto Darius's shoulder, digging their claws in when he threatens to shake them off. “You shouldn't need to,” the man says. He sighs, giving up on dislodging Eberwolf. “If you're ready?” They leave, then. Eber watches and listens carefully, but they don't run into the Collector the whole way there. Unfortunately, they don't see any people, including the kids, either. Maybe once they're on the ground they can track them? Darius’s breath stutters as the Skull comes into view. It's easy to see why. Nearly a third of the Titan’s head is gone, rearranged into the crown of bone that floats above it. Pacing the uneven floor of the exposed skull cavity, Eber finally spots her. A snarling avian with four… three. Three legs, they realize, as the beast turns to screech at the approaching witches. Raine mentioned something about that, didn't they? Taking her branded arm off? Looks like it affected her cursed form as well. That's five fewer claws Eber needs to avoid, anyway. They touch down on the opposite side of the exposed cavern. Darius places Eberwolf on the floor and wisely gets out of the way. “We're just passing through,” Eber chirps. “Not looking for a fight.” It's only partly a lie. Eber doesn't want to have to fight Eda if they can avoid it. “Fuck off,” the beast roars back. … But they might not have the option to avoid it. Raine takes a step forward. “Eda?” They look directly at the beast, only breaking eye contact for a moment to glance down at her shortened leg. Dumbass. But a convenient dumbass. The beast is now fully focused on them. She charges at the bard as Darius wisely steps aside, giving Eber a chance to circle around behind her. “Eda. I know you're not going to hurt me.” The beast, unsurprisingly, continues rushing forward. She leaps over a large rock, wings flaring and forelegs extended to catch herself on the ground… but she's forgotten, or maybe isn't quite intelligent enough to understand, that she only has the one now. She stumbles. It slows her down just enough. Eber jumps on her back, pinning her wings so they won't break under the sudden weight of the net. And, yes, there IS a net. He summons the heaviest one he can manage and throws it over the both of them.
