AMBITION Unpacked E08 || Stripped (or "Knock Off Music"), Part 2 [ 106 Recap ]
Welcome back to AMBITION Unpacked, our in-depth look into the musical series. Join the keen observer and AAA enthusiast Maddi and one of the creators of the show, Maggie, as we explore the series episode by episode and provide insight, analysis, as well as behind the scenes trivia. It's your number one source to deepen your love of AMBITION for the true AAA warrior. **THIS IS NOT A SPOILER-FREE PODCAST.** In this two-parter, Maddi and Maggie discuss the sixth episode of the first season, "Stripped." But as always, there’s a lot to explore, so they break it down into two manageable chunks. In this round, they highlight the purpose of Shawn & Angela (despite their somewhat irrelevance later on), Maggie gets nerdy about Themes again, and both gals get prematurely excited about ZC... but that's just another day for DD and GG. Welcome to Adams, y'all. This is it!

a recap of the stream mishaps tonight:
stream starts with jorge muted
gets slow and jerky during the cyclops saga and jorge has to restart the video to get it to stop
hits 100k!!! (largest number i saw personally was 106)
stream crashes again right before calypso introduces herself and says it was “suspended for policy violations”
everyone freaks out
jorge starts a second stream to finish out the saga (that apparently he was also muted at the start at but i can’t confirm that)
stream ends and everyone freaks out (again)

1 Year Recap
I started this blog in January 2023 and with the 1 year anniversary approaching (January 10th!), let's recap the journey for the past year
For starter, I made 93 stories in 2023 with several reblogs here and there, the total post made in 2023 reached 106. The total notes accumulated of the original post reached the total of 18,494 notes, which could only happen because all of you supported my stories and spread it even more with reblogging it (Tumblr informed me that I reached 3000 reblogs just this morning), so thank you very much for that! Your likes, reblogs and chats were the fuel that kept me going since I made this blog purely because of my interest to the theme. Anyway, my top 5 performing posts are:
Tumblr media
This quickie that I know only did well because of the GIF lol - 842 notes
A possessed guy writhing on the floor - 576 notes (too risky lol)
A possessed stepfather and his rebellious stepson - 522 notes
Planting The Seeds original submission - 476 notes
My take on Check-Up by @fullfriendnerdpurse - 397 notes
Tumblr media
Plus, to recap the Body-A-Day prompt inspired by @max-the-many, the total notes reached 4,428 notes. The top 3 posts are:
Body A Day 10: Table - 298 notes
Body A Day 1: Smoke - 291 notes

Do you have any thoughts on the official promotional videos of One Piece volumes?
i really like them! outside of the music videos that came out for volumes 106 and 109 (which are obviously a cut above and i've watched both of them many times over), my favorite recent one might be the 'records of the straw hat pirates' one for volume 105; i just thought it was such a fun recap of the story so far done in a very snappy and inventive way!

TUMBLR WRAPPED 2024!
hi!
did i scare you? unexpected post, huh? I wanted to have something fun to wrap up the year before we move on so I thought, why not a "wrapped"?
Keeping it short & sweet with some insights too + i luv statistics and seeing patterns, so this is always super interesting to me. Without further ado, here's our wrapped together!
Stats Recap (nerd stuff):
As of 10/12/2024, I have 106 posts. 21 of those are actual fics, meaning almost 1/5th of my posts are works.
The rest is yapping - need to stfu got it! noted!
I received 1,901 notes and 149 followers.
You people are INSANE!!! I have a more emotional post due for New Year's but truly, that is wild, wild work. I'll save the tears and heartfelt stuff for that one, but I want you to know how eternally grateful I am for all of you. Being encouraged by you guys is not just inspiring—it’s addicting, electrifying, and everything in between.
Thank u for the outpouring love.
Inbox Recap (what to look for in 2025?):
Hold ur horses, there's gonna be a lot to write and get through! Thank you for requesting and trusting me to make your ideas come true, I hope to do 'em justice.
Here's a little "reading" so to speak (I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ANYTHING SO DON'T START @ ING ME):
Dominic Fike/Elliot:
sensing an alarming amount of unrest and horn*ness over here. Sensing two posts, both for elliot....smth smth... NSFW... something to do with Nate as well, joining....? Nate and NSFW has the same about of letters too, not a coincidence!!! Also sensing a blurb with a massively underrated song. u btches ab to pmo, why don't we listen to Açaí Bowl more as a collective get the streams up omfg- sorry got sidetracked. that's ab all I can say.
Jude Bellingham:
Pretending to be shocked when I say: more smut requests? Oh brother. But one's very sweet and cute and respectful awww-- SIZE K*NK? oh gosh guys um..the only way I can describe this one is...desperate smut. Anon... cmon now. I would say more, but anon owned up to it saying "This is a long and sick request but I believe you are the only writer on here that can bring this to life 😭😭" which makes me giggle so FINE i'll let it slide, I'll try to do as best as I can (luv u don't u worry I got ideas brewing)
Ben Shelton:
phew. lot of nsfw. like a lot. like a crazy amount. Talking ab that damn car (I'm gonna do smth DRASTIC to that fkin car if he posts w it one more time) talking ab being a munch, ab a supermodel, talking ab scratches, talking ab laver cup (THROWBACK!), about ben showing off.... it's getting hot under the collar, oh gosh. Ahem. We have some sweet fluff ones too! including reader getting insecure/jelly. Ben being irrational, one about....homesickness? a LOT of pregnancy asks. like A LOT. SHELTON NATION DON'T GET KNOCKED UP. PLEASE. One I'm very excited to write, Ben x a certain Doja song...heheheheehehe oh and also, Ben and a 'knock-on effect' w his precious little car, ykwim? no? you'll find out. shush. A very exciting story ahead, the first one with NSFW incorporated - thank u 'D' for the prompt!! Also, I finally got my hands on them tiktok editors and I've made a promise or two to do something w their works.....catch my drift? you'll see soon. Special little hints as to who: victim no 1 and victim no 2 🙂‍↕️😝😙🥰
Post Recap (what went on the billboard charts for u?):
IN 6TH PLACE:
At 85 notes each, we have a tie between "Yours" and "Come Here". Both Ben posts, one SFW the other NSFW. Writing "Yours" was super fun, writing jealous/possessive and sassy Ben kills me laughing, IJBOL and writing Carlitos too? SO funny (wonder how that'd go down differently since we saw them being bff besties at Garden Cup) - Possessive Ben is a guilty pleasure, hehehe. Writing "Come Here" was really interesting since it was my first NSFW of Ben. Also based off of my fave Dom Fike song that's just as h*rny. Thigh riding being my FIRST one off the dome is lwky crazy lmao. Sometimes, I wish I could write more in my NSFW posts, i feel a bit insecure in my NSFW writing? I believe in quality>quantity in fics always, but I hate how short mine are for NSFW posts...sigh. Maybe I should build up the tension more? Go deeper (no pun intended)? you let me know, that would be incredibly insightful!!
IN 5TH PLACE:
At 93 notes, we have my baby, "Shattered"!!! "Shattered" ended up becoming a mini-passion project for me (clearly). What was meant to be a mid-sized blurb ended up progressing to 10k words - how that happened is beyond me. Everytime I thought I was done and ready to close up and conclude, there'd be another part, another bit that I'd want to add. It even got to a point where I'd be on my bus home from work or college, almost falling asleep when I'd get woken up with more inspo, lol. It was my first time writing angst in a very, very, very long time but looking back now, I really truly enjoyed it and I'm quite proud of it! Maybe more angst reqs in my future? I’m leaning towards YES
IN 4TH PLACE:
At 102 notes, we have the "NSFW Alphabet with Ben" - you people are so horny omg. This was the first EVER NSFW thing written about Ben from me. And honestly? my least fave hahahahaa. I deadass have this blocked out of my memory, like I haven't gone back to read it after I posted it. I feel like I'd read it and cringe, or disagree w it or be like "erm acshully ....that's not canon" it prob needs to be redo - I'd never hate any of my children but I'm just saying if this one went missing, idgaf. If you want a crazy NSFW reading thats prob more accurate than anything, check this reading out. Feral, bye.
IJBOL what in the equality is my top 3 posts- I MEAN, here's the top 3 that you people ate tf up!
IN 3RD PLACE:
At 142 notes, we have the "When it Rains, it Pours" - smut always wins here huh? My 2nd fic post! This is a whole nasty NSFW post w Elliot from Euphoria (aka Dominic Fike) mixed with friends w benefits, rain noises, a homemade fort and w**d! Amazing trio imo. Literally as I'm writing this, I just got another like for that freaky ass blurb. As much as I'm excited to write more Dom/Elliot stuff, ALL OF YOU PEOPLE ARE SOOO HORNY? LIKE EVERY SINGLE INBOX REQ IS SMUT? EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Idk how many times I can reinvent the wheel, so to speak, but I'll sure as hell try....hehehe
IN 2ND PLACE:
At 143 notes, we have "Game, Set, Match" part 1 - Ben Shelton. AWWWW MY BABY, MY LOVECHILD! This was the first ever STORY and I'm so glad it became a 3 part story too. Triple Platinum, I know that's right!!! I really loved making this, I didn’t plan to add the Instagram element, especially since I’m usually terrible at fake IG fic stuff (finding the right images is so limiting). But for GSM, it just felt right. I think my writing has improved a lot since then, too. I always laugh at my Ben posts because my A.Ns are always like "oh brother a LONG ONE HERE" and then my next post is even longer 😭 Thank u fr for the love on this one, because THAT'S when I really got a whole lottaaa support and love and it rly blew me out of the water, I could cry.
And finally....IN 1ST PLACE:
At 147 notes, it's no surprise that we have the "Waves", a Jude Bellingham blurb.
No surprises here, it was meant to be. I say that because I had this ask sitting in my inbox and decided to do a poll asking what I should post first - after tagging all the tags, I should've known it'd be crazily ratio'd by the Jude community on here, hahahhaha. I think it was something like 80% for Jude and the rest scattered throughout? This was my first ever Jude blurb, and I think it'll be one of many. I have a couple in my inbox but the future is there for me and writing about that silly guy.
Final words:
Was that as interesting for you as it was for me? I've been meaning to talk and reflect to u all inbetween the whole "Advent Calendar" series.
If anything, these stats tell me more about you guys, what you want to see and how I should continue going forward. I always want to write about things that matter the most and stick with you, fics that have you coming back to reread and enjoy.
Having representation in my characters and creating a world where you can sink into time and again is one of the best and only things I can give, so you bet by all means neccessary I don't want to half-ass it.
I might not know where your headspace is at, or what's going on in your life but I hope whatever happens, I can have a little space right here, make you laugh, smile and feel things that take your mind off of reality. At least until you finish reading.
As for the rest of the year, I still have my finals and work this weekend and as the season comes closer, I'd like to spend it with my loved ones while I still can :) The "Advent Calendar" will continue as per scheduled!
I hope to write some more before NYE comes round but we'll see. It's never a burden to write, it's always a destresser, but you bet I'll be enjoying company with family and friends too. That's all I've got for 2024, I can't wait to continue creating silly little imaginary situations in 2025 <3
- lots of love,
azzie.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 108-109 Subbed (Finalized)
(Previously: Episodes 106-107 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-108: Professor Cobra's Assassin
Professor Cobra announces the "Disclosure Duels," a system of publicizing one's skill and performing duels openly. He also provides all of the students with their own Dis-Belts to gauge their fighting spirit through their passion, focus, and decisiveness in those duels. Cobra then orders O'Brien to duel Judai--and to do so in a way that brings forth all of Judai's latent abilities. Putting his strategy into action, O'Brien takes Shou hostage and duels Judai.
TURN-109: Judai and the Fiery O'Brien
O'Brien aims to bring out all of Judai's latent abilities by using Shou as a hostage. As expected, Judai causes a serious battle to unfold, which he responds to using his Fire deck, activating his Firewall Permanent Trap against Judai's direct attacks to negate his attempts to attack him directly. For his part, Judai Contact-Fuses Neos with Flare Scarab, summoning Flare Neos for a counterattack, but...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry, didn't mean to leave these two episodes hanging for just over a month~ sorry Shou
Episodes 108 and 109 are now finalized! Professor Cobra comes in and starts up the Dis-Duels, which will play a big role in this early part of the season, and we get more time with O'Brien as he duels with Judai on Cobra's orders and ends up having a little fun with it towards the end. It's a fun duel, O'Brien makes a fiery entrance with his Blaze Cannon/Blaze Cannon Trident cards, and I love the sequence in 109 as Judai uses Flare Neos with probably my favorite use of the "Fervent Duel" OST track. Also, 109 in general is a fun episode because of all the top-notch artwork going on, with some interesting angles or some really good motion frames from the animation team (Judai ordering Featherman to swoop in against O'Brien [which gets reused once or twice] is so good). Also nice character moments with Shou about reconciling his ideal from Ryou about respecting opponents with the need to have all-out heated duels to survive, a nuance that gets lost in the dub for the most part. Though speaking of the dub, I did like Axel's (O'Brien's) dub voice for the most part, though it has a rough spot or two later on when he's cowering from the Supreme King.
Animation error-wise, we mostly have some quality-of-watching touch-ups, as there weren't any card errors I picked up on; 108 had one minor touch-up near the end, while 109 had just over a handful of mostly split-screen touch-ups. Details below the cut for the interested, as always~
Quick housekeeping: in case you missed it, I reuploaded 105-107 after noticing I didn't catch an update to one of the names under the In-Between Animation credits, along with some minor consistency fixes in the rest of the credits; these were reposted over on NAC and updated in the Masterpost linked above, and 108-109'll join them on NAC in the next day or two.
Anywho, enjoy! With these done, I'll probably go back to some fixes I've been working on for episode 1 that I missed, then I'll get a bit more looked over on Tag Force Special stuff (in case you missed that news~) before working on 110 as a quick two-parter break; stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits! (108)
Near the end of the episode, as O'Brien draws for his turn, there's a coloring error with some shading along the bottom of his left shoulder where the shading is lighter like with the lighter spots higher up; it's fixed for a few frames but then goes back to lighter. Fixed this by recoloring that shading spot in the frames during the quick zoom-out that happens using Photoshop, then masked out and held the shading in the last fixed frame for the rest of the shot.
Fixes/Edits! (109)
After the 108 recap but before the OP, we get this quick scene with Cobra watching on and saying that, even if he loses, O'Brien has to bring out all of Judai's Duel Energy (a scene cut from the dub [I wonder if this error is why]), but there's an odd animation error that happens where the line on the upper left of his mouth (his left) and the jaw shading are pixels away from where they should be--this only happens for the frames where he has this fully open lip-flap and his semi-open lip-flap going. Fixed this in Photoshop by redrawing the mouth line and filling in the jaw shading along the shading that was there.
Later, after O'Brien activates his Firewall and asks Judai if he thought weak attacks would work on him, Judai notes that O'Brien didn't summon any Monsters so it wouldn't be any fun not diving right in; a semi-surprised O'Brien slides in on a split-screen acknowledging this, but there's a quick frame as the split-screen is completed where the border flickers into its final position--fixed this in Sony Vegas by just replacing the earlier frame with the latter. Then, as they split off the screen to show Shou behind them, Judai's side takes a frame longer than O'Brien's to fully get offscreen; fixed in Vegas by using the frame after in that frame's place.
Later, Judai grunts after O'Brien uses Burial from a Different Dimension to return three Fire-Type Monsters to his Cemetery, and O'Brien slides in on a split-screen to say that he's removing one from it to activate Firewall against Flare Neos's attack--but Judai starts moving for it a couple of frames before O'Brien actually starts sliding in, and along with that, the border on their split-screen ends up being off-center. Fixed these in Vegas, first by redoing the split so it's timed with Judai moving, then ending the slide-in with the border centered, moving O'Brien's side into place so that his mouth and hand move properly for the rest of the split-screen. Then, a frame before they start splitting apart as Firewall activates, O'Brien's side moves but Judai's stays still; fixed by holding the split-screen still over that frame.
A bit after, once Judai uses Contact Out to de-fuse Flare Neos and attack to make O'Brien run out of Monsters to remove from play, O'Brien grunts as Judai slides in on a split-screen to remind him about Flare Scarab's power-up effect--but like with Judai in #3 above, O'Brien starts moving for the split-screen a couple frames before Judai starts sliding in. Then, as their split ends, there's a quick frame where they start to split apart to show Flare Scarab behind them but don't actually split; this is likely why their splits then end up sliding out unevenly. with Judai's taking an extra frame to fully slide out. Fixed these all in Vegas by first redoing it so that Judai's slide-in is timed with O'Brien moving; then, I masked in part of Flare Scarab from the next frames over them as they start to split, adding a new border to O'Brien and Judai's splits; and then finally, I redid their split-outs so that they were timed evenly.
After the eyecatch, we see more of Cobra watching the duel, and Judai and O'Brien come up on a split-screen with their current LP counts--they start to split apart a frame before their LP counts disappear to show Cobra, with this quick frame having just white behind them, along with O'Brien's split missing its border. Fixed this in Vegas by just holding the previous frame over it so that the split-out starts in the next frame, once the LP counts are gone.
[continued below because of dumb characters-per-"block" limits]
(6) A bit later, after O'Brien lets Shou go, Cobra looks on in surprise, but there are a few quick frames where the shading along his jaw is incomplete; fixed in Photoshop for the lip-flap frames where it happens, then placed them in the footage in Vegas and moved it into place as needed for the panning shot here.
(7) After O'Brien loads his Volcanic Buckshot into his Blaze Cannon Trident and deals 2000 damage to Judai, he starts to explain Trident's role in that, but Judai's betting that there was more to it; O'Brien slides in on a split-screen to say as much as he explains Buckshot's role, but his split-screen's already halfway into the screen in its first before sliding the rest of the way in, and like with #3 above, the border on the split-screen somehow ends up off-center. Fixed these in Vegas by redoing his slide-in so it slides in more fluidly. Then, because of how off-center the split-screen is, as they split apart, O'Brien's side takes longer to slide out; fixed this, after re-centering the split-screen, by redoing their slide-outs to be timed evenly.
New Arknights event has a fantastic mechanic that I really love involving water pumps and cleaning up the blight left by enemies, as well as a boss that is honestly one of the easier ones recently released (in the normal difficulty encounter at least). Being able to straight up tank it and keep it from moving is a godsend compared to all the hoops we had to jump through with some of the other recent or rerun bosses. If anything, I wonder if the challenge will be lacking for veteran players even moving into the EX and S stages later this month.
As for my pulls, bad news but also good news. The bad news is my limited operator luck seems to have run out for now, as I'm not interested in pouring more resources into this banner with two limited Rainbow Six banners coming up in the next couple months and Wis'adel just after that. The good news, however, is that I finally got Ines as a random 6-star, along with Zuo Le who is actually really fun to use. Oh, also very pretty Highmore dress because Highmore is a pretty jellyfish lady who needs pretty outfits.
As for the story... I kinda skipped it for now, I'll just have to go check that out later or watch a recap afterward. The Sui stuff hasn't really interested me too much in the past, but the farming element does make me think I might be interested this time. Then again, I also really need to check out that fanmovie for Lonetrail sometime.
Minor note, on the first day of this event, I currently have a max of 330 pulls with all my current resources, after doing 106 non-free pulls on the current banner, so if I don't get Shu in the 13 free pulls I have left, I'll just have to accept it because I really want to make sure I have 300 for Wis'adel.
The 1,289 movies I saw in 2024...
This is my fourth 'End of Year' recap. In January 2021, during the Covid lock-down, I began logging the many films that I watch every day, just to keep track. In the beginning I jotted a line or two about each, only to create a record. But then I started adding longer notes and more elaborate impressions, and before I knew it, I've got a 'Film Project' on my hands.
The obsessive project mushroomed. In the course of these four years, I watched and reviewed a total of 4,126 movies; 885 in 2021, 954 in 2022, 998 in 2023, and a ridiculous number of 1,289 movies this last year.
And it seems that I'm just getting started.
As I wrote before, I owe an apology to nobody for my indulgence. I derive great pleasure from discovering daily the best movies ever made, and I enjoy even more the process of thinking about them and coming up with my own specific takes, if I can. As an un-accomplished 'Creator', composing short reviews fills me with just the right amount of self-fulfillment. The fact that I am blessed with the physical and financial ability to enjoy this type of existence right now, at the end of my own life and while civilization collapses all around us, is not lost on me either.
The project, like the many others I created before it, is purely personal, and is a strict 'labor of love'. Watching a movie today is an individual experience [Except of one visit, I haven't been to a theater in many years], and maintaining this blog (which hardly anybody visits), is done as a form of mental masturbation; I do it every day because I like it a lot, and because it doesn't hurt anybody. I described my background before, so there's no need to repeat it here.
So here are some generalities, with a dozen 'Best-Of' samples below.
I've made a concerted effort to watch more films helmed by women directors - 215 in all (but only 16% of the total). Next year I will increase that number.
I like good documentaries, and of the 1,289 movies, 170 were documentaries. However, most of them were not that great. Surprisingly, only 99 were repeat films that I had watched before – it felt as if the number would be higher. I also started watching many more short films (5 to 40 minutes), and I plan focusing even more on short films in the coming year.
As I'm moving away from Hollywood-type blockbuster fair, I saw 737 “Foreign” films (read: Not American) which were 57% of the total. Next year I will be sure to increase that ratio too.
Here is the break-down by country:
From the UK (108)
From France (106)
From Canada (44)
From Japan (40)
From Denmark (25)
From "Czechoslovakia" (24)
From Germany (21)
From Sweden (20)
From Italy & "Russia" (18 each)
From Israel & Poland (17 each)
From Brazil (16)
From Australia, Iran & Ireland (13 each)
From Iceland, Korea & Spain (12 each)
From Hungary (11)
From Turkey (10)
The rest were films from China, Romania, The Netherlands, Argentina, India, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Finland, Latvia, Mexico, Chile, Croatia, Norway, Austria, Cuba, Egypt, Greece, Morocco, Palestine, Scotland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Haiti, Lebanon, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Afghanistan, Armenia, Colombia, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Jordan, Paraguay, Portugal, Senegal, Sudan, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia and Wales. [But unlike 2023, no films in Babylonian this year...]
Many of these 1,293 movies were terrible. But only 23 of them I simply couldn't finish. They included: Otto Preminger's 'Exodus', Troma Studio's 'Poultrygeist', Polanski's 1970 'A day at the beach', The Japanese 'Patisserie Coin de rue', Bob Fosse 'All that Jazz', M. Night Shyamalan 'The happening', Gene Hackman's 'Heartbreakers', Elaine May 'A new leaf', Etc. Many of the others were boring, tedious, stupid. YMMV.
Next year I will also start keeping track of the genres, which I haven't done up to now. I may try new things, but there are some popular genres I generally stir away from: Superheros, horror, franchise, fantasy. There were six A.I.-generated films that I saw this year. I predict that in 2025 we will have the first 'good' A.I. features.
I wish I had signed up to Letterboxd at the start. It would have made sorting the list so much easier. But I've been dropping out of all social media (reddit and tumblr are the only ones still standing), and I don't plan on starting on a new platform.
I only felt the urge to "rate" 40% of the movies I saw (527), and of the ones that I did rate, there were 18 which I designated “Best”, and 78 to which I gave the 10/10 score. 'Best' for me usually meant that it offered a 'very' strong emotional reaction.
40 years ago I studied film at Copenhagen University, but it's only during these last few years that I've become pretty knowledgeable about the overall history of the cinema. It is therefore my favorite experience today to come across a movie I never even heard of, maybe from a different time and place, which knocks me completely over.
And so, here are a few of the less obvious gems which I enjoyed the most this year. Many more on the blog. Check them all out if you want.
The films of Icelandic Hlynur Pálmason (all but 'Winter brothers'). My favorite was 'White, white day', a masterful feat of slow film making, with unusual choices in its subtle direction. A policeman grieves for his wife who died in a car accident. The man renovates a house, takes care of his cute granddaughter, and then, (like ‘The Descendants’), he discovers that before she died, his beloved wife had an affair with some guy. A stunning story of heartbreak, resignation and acceptance. The Trailer.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan 8 films (I still haven't seen his 'Casaba' and 'Clouds of May'). My favorite of his: 'About Dry Grasses' which plays for over 3 hours in the desolate, snow-covered mountains of Eastern Anatolia. Like Mads Mikkelsen in 'The Hunt’, a teacher in a small village is being falsely accused of improper behavior toward a 14-year-old girl. But the slow and meandering story embraces other themes as well, of longing, of truth seeking, of weariness, complacency and contempt. With a delusional, self centered man and the two females he misunderstands and maligns. It includes one shocking 'break the 4th wall’ moment (at 2:05:00) which illustrates that nothing we think and believe in is true. The trailer.
'A brand new life' (2009), a heart-breaking Korean story, based on the director’s personal life. A sweet 9-year-old girl is abandoned by her father, who one day and without any warning drops her off at a Catholic orphanage in the countryside and leaves. Life is suddenly too painful for her. With the cutest little girl, who has to deal with life’s harshest lessons. A relatable debut feature, it uses the simplest and purest film language. It's similar to other tragic stories about innocence lost; Carla Simón’s ‘Summer 1993’, the French film 'Ponette’, and the Irish 'The Quiet Girl’ from last year, all with the same kind spirit and sad understatements. The trailer.
'The Last Repair Shop', winner of last year's Oscar for Best Documentary Short. A quiet story about a shop that maintains and repairs the 80,000 musical instruments used by students of the Los Angeles school district. It’s about mending broken things so they can be whole again, performed by people who were also broken, but are now whole. Similar to and even better than the 2017 Oscar nominee 'Joe’s Violin'.
'Ága', my first Bulgarian film, but it plays somewhere in Yakutsk, south of the Russian arctic circle. An isolated old Inuit couple lives alone in a yurt on the tundra. Slow and spiritual, their lives unfold in the most unobtrusive way, it feels like a documentary. But the simplicity is deceiving, this is film-making of the highest grade, and once Mahler 5th is introduced on a small transistor radio, it’s transcendental. The emptiness touched me deeply. (I should watch it again!). The trailer.
'Symphony No. 42' by Hungarian animator Réka Bucsi. It consists of 47 short & whimsical vignettes, without any rhyme or rhythm; A farmer fills a cow with milk until it overflows, a zoo elephant draws a “Help me” sign on a canvas, a UFO sucks all the fish from the ocean, wolves party hard to 'La Bamba’, an angry man throws a pie at a penguin, two cowboys holding blue balloons watch a tumbleweed rolls by, a big naked woman cuddle with a seal, etc. etc. Bucsi made it before Don Hertzfeldt’s 'World of tomorrow’ and even before 'Echo', my favorite Rúnar Rúnarsson’s. 10 perfect minutes of surrealist chaos.
'Shirkers', a 2018 documentary. Sandi Tan was an avant-garde teenage punker when she set out to make Singapore’s first New Wave road movie in 1992, together with 2 female friends and a middle aged mentor. But when the shooting was over, this 'mentor’ collected the 72 canisters of completed film as well as all supportive materials, and disappeared. For 20 years, Sandi and friends could not figure out what had happened, and eventually gave up on their groundbreaking work. This documentary pieces together the mystery, telling about the process of making the original movie, the consequences of losing - and finding it again - after all this time. Absolutely tremendous. The trailer.
'Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains' is young Chinese prodigy Gu Xiaogang's debut feature. A slow epic saga (2.5 long hours) of a large family struggling during four seasons through life’s ups and down in this provincial city. It’s a metaphor for a classic scroll painting from the 14 century, and it is apparently only the first chapter in an upcoming trilogy. A stupendous, slow-moving masterpiece told in a magnificent style, and half a dozen transcendental set pieces. The trailer.
The short jazzy documentaries of Dutch Bert Haanstra, especially 'Glass' (1958), the first Oscar win for The Netherlands, and 'Zoo', which was made 3 years later.
'Apollo 11', a documentary by Todd Douglas Miller. An exhilarating re-telling of the moon landing from 2019. Perfectly crisp and emotionally laid out, without any bullshit narration, talking heads interviews or irritating recreations. Just jaw-dropping photography which puts you in the middle of the action. The trailer.
I’ve always loved Buñuel’s last 3 films, maybe because they were so easy to watch. The fire and brimstone of his youth were distilled into accessible, vivid tableaux. Re-watching his 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie', (or “Six friends and the impossible dinner”) was just delightful: You nearly feel sorry for these poor 1-procenters, who can’t find a decent place to eat in. Their illogical dreams dredge out their childhood traumas, and there’s no explanations to anything that happens. It was the New 4K trailer which drew me back.
The magical work of Australian stop-motion animator Adam Elliot. Especially, 'Mary and Max'. A weirdly adult 'Wallace and Gromit', a dark and tragic clay figure story, voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette. Two damaged and unfortunate souls connect by becoming pen pals; A lonely Australian 8-year-old girl with an ugly birthmark on her forehead, and an obese Jewish New Yorker with Asperger’s. It encompasses 20 years of outlandish long-distance emotions which ends with the acknowledgment of friendship. The trailer.
'Pirosmani' (1969), my first Georgian masterpiece which was not made by Sergei Parajanov. It’s an awe-inspiring biography of Nikolai Pirosmanashvíli. He was a self-taught, naïve Georgian painter who lived during Vincent van Gogh’s time, and like him, died destitute and unappreciated by his piers, only to find prominence decades after his death. (Japanese Trailer here.) It’s an absorbing and visually-stunning film, composed of rural tableaux and primitive folk setting, a mixture of Henri Rousseau, Gauguin, Édouard Manet, Bruegel and Jodorowsky. A sad, slow and formal composition, full of sublime pathos and simplicity.
'For the hungry boy' (2018), my all-time favorite Paul Thomas Anderson work, even more than his “Phantom Thread”, out of which these discarded shots were collected. Vicki Krieps is a major crush. The score is Jonny Greenwood’s “House of Woodcock” from the movie. I've seen it at least 15 times since October.
'Nostalgia for the light' (2010), my first film by Chilean Patricio Guzmán. His life-long work had been occupied with the Chilean coup d'état and the collective scars suffered by the people of Chile to this day. This beautiful documentary starts with examining the gigantic telescopic installations at the Atacama desert, used by astronomers to discover the origins of the cosmos. He then segues into the story the 60,000 'disappeared’, who were imprisoned in large concentration camps in the same area, and then murdered without a trace. A group of wives and sisters have been roving for decades now the same barren area, searching for bone fragments of their loved one. So both archaeologists and astronomers are looking for clues about the past. The trailer.
A woman interviewed in one continued shot: A small 1993 French masterpiece 'Emilie Muller'. A young woman arrives for her first ever audition where she’s asked to show the contents of her handbag. As soon as I finished watching it, I had to watch it again, and then a third time.
“Wow! So, are there any last words you would like to say, about this whole thing?” Not really.
Here is a Google spreadsheet with the output of all 4 years.
The Day the Earth Stood Still
'The most important day in history, or so the story goes It was shown on every channel and cancelled all my shows. The buildup lasted four long years, this happens all the time It never measures up to the hype in reason or in rhyme. I hope that things will settle down but I don't think it will For politicians will never change our hopes they like to kill. So harken all ye lads and lasses, it's time to hunker down Let's try at least to be entertained by each and every clown.'
This blog will not be an indictment of the choices made by any voters. Rather it is my view on some of the crazy things that I saw develop during this crazy process called elections. Here are my observations:
Wolf Blitzer was on air after being sedated by CNN for three days. They must have given him several Red Bulls because he was suddenly bright eyed and bushy tailed, until the day wore on and his body reminded him he is 106.
I was watching the results (starting at noon) with my interns. We had a drinking game where we each had to take a drink whenever someone said 'this will be too close to call'. By 5:00pm the only one still conscious was John Smith. I remember his saying something about 'they won't break me' before I lapsed into a very deep sleep. When I woke up (sometime Thursday) he was guarding the door with a gun and told me they would never get him or us while he was still alive.
In my fugue state I recall hearing the Color Purple a lot but when I looked at the map it was obviously a hallucination. Maybe it was an ad for the new musical on HBO.
During the recap I heard a newsman state that there were problems with ballots in Colorado because many Gen Z voters had a difficult time producing a signature. They weren't sure how to do this. Well I...You...and...forget it. The world of education went to hell a long time ago.
Many places had lineups of twelve hours. It didn't mention how many got bored and left. At least during Black Friday if you wait that long you have a shot at a big screen TV.
Some ballots were several pages long. You are asking people to fill out a book when they really don't care who the new rat-catcher of Bunghole County will be. This also involves reading and we know how great those skills are becoming.
Apparently one of the biggest google searches the day before the election was 'Is Joe Biden still running?' Think about it. The people who asked that have a vote that counts just as much as yours does.
Many people wrote in the name of popular real estate agents because they had seen their photos on lawn signs and thought they were running.
Did anyone else notice that the election was rigged until it wasn't?
Every winner has to start working hard right from day 1: that is when their campaign for the next election begins.
In what should come as no surprise it was reported the day after just how much money rich people had made so far. Will any of that money be taxed? What world do you live in?
No dead people voted this year, and neither did any illegal immigrants. Apparently they were too busy packing and learning to say 'eh' after each sentence. (not the dead people in case you thought that was what I was referring to.)
An alien spaceship was spotted heading towards Earth then sharply turning away. They ARE superior beings.
We have the same problems here in Canada except our election season only lasts 6 weeks. This is part of a communist plot to prevent sign-makers and advertisers from making too much money. Or is it so our national health care system is not overloaded with people suffering from anxiety? Hard to say.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: When it comes to politics does anything really ever change?
S10:W9
…and the world keeps turning.  Remember gents, whether you are celebrating or sulking, keep your heads held high. Literally try to be the change you wish to see in the world. I want this world to be peaceful, happy, funny, healthy and clean, so that is what I will try to be. How would you feel if you had no phone in your pocket or TV at your pad? If all you had to focus on when you woke up everyday was you and yours? You didn’t burden yourself with issues from thousands of miles away and there were no talking heads telling you what and who to hate. If we focus on our intimate communities we can prosper and thrive gentlemen, and there is no more intimate community than that of the LOG.
Week 10 Predictions
Embarcadero Burd Turds @ Odusty Beckham Jr.
I’m not sure if anyone has picked up on this, but I never bet against the Embarcadero Burd Turds.  ODBJ slip slip slippin and continues to slip in week 10. Turds fly 125-101
DISCIPLINE = FREEDOM @ Spirit Halloween Store
You know how I feel about seasonal halloween stores, they’re great in short bursts but never make it long term. Funny how Spirit got wins the week of Halloween and the week after, just like in real life, I swear I’m always right and nobody listens to me. Not sure how the discipline is going in the other camp either, but numbers don’t lie. 3 in a row is called a winning streak, and you don’t fuck with a winning streak. DISCIPLINE buys everything, even the shelves and sends Spirit packing 108-96
The Papi Gringos @ Redfield 49Knerrs
You might think that the gringos desperately need a win due to the fact they have dropped 2 in a row. Well, Bradner hasn’t one in over a month and this is the week that changes. Redfield finds a way and sends the Papi to a reeducation camp 115-109
The Raj Hotel @ Sordidus
The Raj Hotel lost a heartbreaker last week. The ESPN projections played sick games with his soul. Well this is the week he gets his groove back and his niners back from a bye. The Raj Hotel cleans the cum stains off the wall and finally passes the blacklight test. No longer sordidus  106-101
Sarnia Slut Slayers @ Big Sur Buckle Nuggets
Is peterson alive? Does he still play fantasy football with us? Has he ever read this far down? Sluts win. 120-89
Week 9 Results: (4-1 16-9 Overall)
Turds over Raj 99-88 111-108
Nugs over Spirit 111-87
Sordidus over Redfield 148-119 134-80
DISCIPLINE over ODBJ 122-120 125-99
Sluts over Papis 108-92 113-106
Kick back with a microdose boys, a heavy microdose.
LOG 4 life!
~mish
I need to get this out before next episode, so bear with me here, since I will be mentioning events from recent tracks, I'm going to put the text after the "keep reading".
Before talking about track #106, I think it is worth doing a brief recap.
What do we know so far?
The first season introduced the characters to the viewers and their dynamics, we start to slowly get used to them and know them at the same pace the characters start to know each other and get used to each other’s antics. The main mystery of the first season being, why did Fumiya bring all of them together? And we get a glimpse of an answer in the summer festival track. After Fumiya’s first Charisma Break, when he is still bedridden, he gives the 4th wall breaking info of the release of the first album and in the very end we get a scene with suspicious figures lurking the Charisma House pointing to the second season.
Now, onto the second season.
At the beginning, we find out those suspicious figures were scientists sent by the government to study the charisma energy that is released during a charisma break, lots of questions raised here. We also get introduced to a new character, Nakagami Soemon, who plays a major role throughout the second season. We also learn that Soemon is obsessed with the charismas just like a fan obsessed with the characters from their favorite show.
Before the first break of the second season, we were also introduced to another character, one of Soemon’s assistant, who introduces himself by “this Torahime”. Seemingly to play the role of the antagonist’s sidekick, at this point we don’t know much about him.
Before continuing, I'd like to thematically divide the second season into three main parts as illustrated below:
Tumblr media
First part
It starts at track #75, beginning of the second season, and ends at track #90. It encompasses Torahime's introduction (track #77), Ohse's 2nd break (track #78), Sarukawa's 2nd break (track #82), Amahiko's 2nd break (track #86), an interlude (track #87) and Fumiya's 2nd break (track #90).
Second part
It starts at track #91 and ends at track #104. It encompasses Torahime moving into the charisma house undercover (track #91), Terra's 2nd break (track #94), Rikai's 2nd break (track #98), Nakagami moving into the charisma house undercover (track #99) and Iori's 2nd break (track #104).
Final part
It starts at track #105 and as of the writing of this, it hasn't ended yet. It encompasses an interlude where we find out Torahime's first name (track #105) and an episode where we find out Torahime's birthday (track #106).
My reasoning for dividing it like this is based on main overarching storylines.
Home
In the first part, we have the protagonists running from the government, the inciting incident being the looming threat of the scientists catching them that made the protagonists not being able to stay at the charisma house, nor return to it. During this part we see Ohse's point of view in regards to what he considers "home" (the charisma house), we return to Sarukawa's hometown only to find out he ran away from there, but for some reason he stays with the other six guys he shared a house with, and we return to Amahiko's family house, where, despite his mother reassuring him it's also his home, he decides to stay with his sharehousemates. Here we have the main theme of the part presented to us and developed in the course of the breaks, our protagonists reach the conclusion that the charisma house is their home and they have to return to it.
Before reaching the climax of the part, we get an interlude where the characters and the viewer can breathe and enjoy a calm moment of introspection. We get a closure to each character that had a break during this part and a sense of deep bond that formed between them that we didn't get to see during the first season.
The conclusion of the first part is brilliantly executed with Fumiya's Rap Battle Break (RBB) reaffirming the charisma house as their home, the place to return to, and the consenquently destruction of the research facility, destroying the threat.
Love
Now the second part is interesting, we don't have an inciting incident that the protagonists are aware of, in their point of view there is no more threat and they can continue their daily lives in the sharehouse similar to what we got in the first season, if not for the reintroduction of one key character: Nakagami Soemon's right hand man assistant and sidekick, Torahime.
Torahime's whole character is based on Nakagami, his whole existence is dependent of Nakagami's existence and this here is a noteworthy element. But we return to it when talking about track #106, for now let's recap the second part.
Since we don't have an inciting incident, but rather a new character, the conflict is established by following Torahime and his many attempts at getting noticed by Nakagami, first infiltrating the charisma house undercover and using a false name “Torajiro”, second trying to witness a charisma break or get one of the charismas to come with him move into Nakagami’s place.
During all these attempts, we have him help Terra realize he can count on his friends and open up to them, that because he isn’t alone, he can be alone and love himself. He helped Rikai by showing to the other residents of the house Rikai’s notebook containing all his plans on making living together a happy place and environment for everyone, showing them that Rikai’s sense of order was his way of showing he cared for his housemates, that it was his love language. He helped Iori by reaffirming that the seven belong together, that Iori is part of the charismas and is needed by them, like Amahiko said, Iori is the face of the house, and acts of service is his love language.
The more time Torahime spent with the seven guys, the more he came to understand them and their strong bond, reaching the final conclusion that the seven must stay together in the charisma house.
Iori’s 2nd break gave a seemingly closure to the second season. The scientists get exposed, the threat is once and for all over and our protagonists can return to their daily lives, another peaceful day in the charisma house.
Charisma?
After the final break of the season, expecting a similar pattern to the first season, a last episode would give us information of the second album release and a glimpse into what the third season has in store for us.
However, what we got instead was another interlude episode similar to the first we got in the first part, a calm moment of introspection that could’ve been a potential end for the season, if not for the last minute reveal of Torahime’s full name.
And the question begins, where is Nakagami Soemon?
There was no charge after track #105, but it was expected since there was none in the first interlude, as well.
And then, we got track #106.
No title call, the episode for the most part was the usual charisma shenanigans, each charisma having a moment that would charge them, but we got no “charisma charge was successful” at the end. And, indeed, there was no charge this episode, as well.
What we got was the fact that Torahime was still there, not like in the second part, we don’t get his perspective on what is happening around him anymore. He is there until a charisma calls him, he is there, but we don’t see him, and his icon shows up one time only throughout the episode, at the very end, laughing awkwardly with everyone after they asked when was his birthday and that they were going to celebrate it alongside Rikai’s.
And the question persists, where is Nakagami Soemon? Haven’t we established Torahime’s whole existence and purpose as a character in the narrative was directly dependent of the existence of Nakagami as a character? If there’s no Nakagami, why Torahime is still there?
And then, the most unsettling of all, we see Fumiya reading about the energy issue and essays about the matter, how he kept the charisma radar and how it was not reacting at all.
To what conclusion the second season is heading towards?
I want to end this by theorizing that maybe the main theme of the final part is "Charisma". And by the end of the season, we might be given just a glimpse of the answer and a cliffhanger to the third season, that may or may not finally answer that question.
