Joseph “Uncle Joe” Clovese was the last known surviving African soldier of the Union Army in the American Civil War, and lived in Pontiac at the time of his death in 1951. Clovese, who lived to be 107 years old, was born into slavery on a plantation in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, and escaped slavery in his teens to join the Union Army during the Siege of Vicksburg. He stayed with the Northern Army, first as a drummer, later as an infantryman. He was a private in Co. "C", 63rd Colored Infantry Regiment.
Following the war he worked on Mississippi river steamboats, and he later worked on the crew stringing the first telegraph wires between New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi. At the age of 104, Clovese moved from Louisiana to Pontiac, Michigan to be near family. Once the community learned about “Uncle Joe,” the citizens of Pontiac embraced him. Large gatherings were organized for his 105th, 106th and 107th birthdays on January 30th.
For his funeral, more than 300 people were packed into Newman A.M.E. Church in Pontiac (their former location, in downtown) for the service. Hundreds more gathered at the gravesite in Pontiac’s Perry Mount Park Cemetery. Veterans from the Oakland County Council of Veterans served as pall bearers. A firing party from Selfridge Air Force Base fired the final salute and taps was sounded over the cemetery. Pontiac even named a road in his honor, that ran through the Lakeside Homes complex.

RIF Trust’s Guide to the Safest Countries in the World for New Residency or Second Citizenship
Tumblr media
Mimoun A. Assraoui is our CEO. Moroccan by birth, French-educated, and based in the UAE, he’s perfectly placed to comment on the safest countries in the world to get Residency and Citizenship by Investment.
Assraoui is also an economic citizen of St Lucia. He insists “that our desire to find a safe space for ourselves is something innate. We’re looking to replicate the comfort and warmth we found in our mother’s womb.”
“Investors are drawn towards the world’s safe spots, especially if they are looking to relocate with their families. Here, in reverse order, using the Institute for Economics and Peace’s Safety Perceptions Index (SPI), is our overview of the safest countries in the world to secure a new residency or second citizenship.”
5.) United States
Anything under 0.2 on the SPI is considered a safe country. The US clocks in at 0.187. Of the 121 countries surveyed, the United States ranks 43rd – finishing comfortably above the likes of Brazil (115th), India (90th) and Nigeria (104th).The US EB-5 Investor Visa is a 3-step process towards becoming an American citizen. First, you receive a provisional Green Card after 27 months of residency. 3-6 months later, you receive a conditional Green Card which guarantees lawful permanent residency and US citizenship after 5 years.
4.) Malta
The European continent’s Malta’s score is 0.166. This puts it in 35th position in the safest countries in the world rankings. Malta sits above the likes of Algeria (0.214) in 61st, Kenya (0.358) in 101st, and Lebanon (0.203) in joint 55th places.
Maltese Exceptional Investor Naturalization (MEIN) is a direct route to citizenship in the country. A €600,000 minimum investment will see you become a national of Malta after an application processing time of 16-18 months. This Citizenship by Investment means you’ll be able to qualify for a Maltese passport, securing you visa-free access to 175 countries.
3.) Canada
The United States’ North America neighbour Canada is in 33rd position in the table. This is thanks to a 0.163 score. Canada is higher in the rankings of the safest countries in the world than Iran (0.248) in 75th, Mexico (0.299) in 90th, and  Tunisia (0.222) in 66th places.
With a C$275,000 investment, you can join the Canadian Start-Up Visa Program. As a Permanent Resident, you must live in Canada for a minimum 730 days (2 years) over the course of 5 years. By residing in Canada for at least 3 out of those 5 years (1,095 days), you become eligible for Canadian citizenship.
2.) United Kingdom
In 24th position comes the UK. It has a 0.148 score. This puts the United Kingdom above the likes of Colombia (0.292) in 88th, Ghana (0.369) in 105th, and South Africa (0.373) in 107th places.
The Innovator Founder Visa provides a path to acquiring a UK passport, enabling you to enter 177 countries without a visa. You can qualify for British citizenship following 5 years of Permanent Residency in the UK. All this starts from a minimum £200,000 investment.
United Arab Emirates
The SPI rates the UAE as second in the safest countries in the world rankings.  This is due to a 0.073 score. Roughly 50% of people living in the United Arab Emirates reveal they do not feel any risk at all of residing there.
The UAE Golden Visa is the only non-European golden visa programme established outside Europe. UAE residency’s physical residence requirement is a minimum visit every 6 months. While you can’t apply for a UAE Passport, the number-1 travel document in our Passport Index, you can enjoy visa-free access to 18 countries as a resident.

NYC IND line subway car, c1939
From Wikipedia: On March 14, 1925, the groundbreaking of the Eighth Avenue subway took place at 123rd Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. On September 10, 1932, the Eighth Avenue Line opened from 207th Street to Chambers Street, inaugurating the IND.
Opening 92 years ago today, they built an entire subway line from 207th Street to Chambers Street in 7 years! The Second Avenue Subway line has been on the drawing board since 1920 and today it only has 3 stops, at 96th, 86th, and 72nd, with connections to other lines' pre-existing stops.
Some things never change, though:
There was some vandalism on the IND Eighth Avenue Line's opening day, as some of the uptown stations were broken into by people who clogged turnstile slots with gum and other objects. Two months after the IND opened for business, three exits from the 96th Street and 103rd Street stations – at 95th and 97th Streets and at 105th Street, respectively – were closed due to theft.

Euclid Avenue Christian Church (East Mt. Zion Baptist Church)
9990 Euclid Ave.
Cleveland, OH
On July 4, 1843, members of the Disciples of Christ Church in Euclid met in a maple grove near Euclid Avenue and E. 105th Street and voted to form their own congregation. The congregation met in homes until 1848, when a church was constructed on Euclid Avenue between Doan (now E. 105th St.) and Republic (now E. 101st St.). The congregation moved into a new building at 9990 Euclid Avenue in 1908. This structure was designed by architects George Kramer and C.C. Hamilton. The J.R. Lamb Studios designed the interior woodwork and stained glass windows. The exterior is faced with green serpentinite stone from Chester County, Pennsylvania.
The Romanesque Revival exterior features Syrian-style archways over doors and windows, and a coarse-ashlar finish. The interior woodwoork is all oak. The interior is based on the "Akron Plan", a popular style at the time. This permitted the Sunday School walls to fold back so that the larger crowds could hear the service. The builders were Skeel Bros. of Cleveland. Euclid Avenue Christian Church moved to Cleveland Heights in 1955, and sold the building to East Mt. Zion Baptist Church. East Mt. Zion became the first African American church to hold services on Euclid Avenue. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 2022.

“She was a… Jewel”
“What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ~Helen Keller
Tuesday October 3rd, 2023
Today would have been the 105th birthday of Jewel Mardis Burgett, better known as my Maw Maw. She was truly one of a kind, a hard, tough as nails, scrappy (97lbs), modern day frontier woman. I was blessed to be her one and only grandchild, she adored me and she loved Jesus (the order was suspect, depending on my behavior).
I spent a lot of my childhood with her. I remember our long summer days; we would weed and pick the garden in the not so cool of the Geraldine Alabama mornings. We were always putting a puzzle together, she said that my eyes looked like windshield wipers scouring for the next piece. I have to admit that unlike my other Grandmother, Jewel could not cook. My Paw Paw always told us that if you put her fried okra in a can, it would make a great rattle… it was not a lie… or an exaggeration.
If you met her, you would call her reserved and shy. We as her family got to see a side of her that not many saw… her unexpected and outgoing sense of humor. For starters she surprised us by taking pictures outside of her apartment on her 90th birthday… in a blue bikini… in front of God and everyone else (I have pictures).
Maw Maw, Mom, Leigh Bee and I shared many adventures and memories, here are just a couple. One Christmas we had to abandon Mom’s house due to an electrical issue, we found an extended stay hotel room for the night. It had something I had never seen in person… a murphy bed. I commented “Maw Maw as small as you are, I bet we can fold you up into the wall behind the bed.” We did, like about 20 times. I can still hear her muffled laughter in the wall. We all howled until our stomachs hurt.
We took a trip to Chattanooga to visit the aquarium and the IMAX. She was quite the nature lover, there was not a plant or animal that she couldn’t name. So, she was amazed by the aquarium. Afterwards while we were walking to the IMAX a bumble bee as big as strawberry honed in on Leigh… she shrieked and in one fail swoop Maw Maw swatted it out of the air and squashed it on the sidewalk. It was like a scene out of a spaghetti western. If there had been iPhones, I am sure there would be a plaque to immortalize the event. The IMAX movie was 3D, I don’t think she watched five minutes of it, she kept turning around and giggling like a school girl at the 200 hundred people behind her in 3D glasses.
My Maw Maw was a veracious reader. She was over the moon when we went to St. Simmons for Easter and was finally able to see Christ’s Church that played such a big party in the Eugenia Price books that she so loved. I am sure that she is one of the main reasons I love to read (and write). Happy Birthday Maw Maw, we love and miss you, in the grand scheme of eternity we will see you soon.
“I thank my God every time I remember you.” ~ Philippians 1:3

In Bradenton, the national average cost of commercial roof remodeling could range from $8,000 to $20,000 depending on the size, material, labor, design, etc. Here are some of the key factors that affect the overall cost of commercial roofing.
Other Factors That Affect The Cost Of Commercial Roofing Remodeling
The amount of money you’ll spend on your new roof depends on several factors. The most obvious is the best roofing type for your Bradenton home. However, there are other factors that will affect the overall cost of a new roof. Make sure you take them into consideration when planning.
Roof Dimensions
Larger homes tend to cost more because it would take more time to replace. Likewise, roofing materials are priced according to their size and shape. The more intricate the design, the higher the cost will be, including its steepness.
Labor Cost
The regular breakdown of commercial roofing and remodeling cost is about 60% for the labor and 40% for the materials. However, the type of roofing material can also influence the labor cost depending on the difficulty of the installation.
Other factors to consider are how many stories the home may have, how steep the roof is, the difficulty of access, and how dangerous the installation would be.
Geographical Location
The location of your home is also something you need to consider, as it can affect not just your roofing expenses but your lifestyle as well. For example, if you live in an area that experiences severe weather conditions, you might need to consider the most durable materials.
The Bottom Line
Your roof is one of your major investments, so make sure you choose the best one for your needs. RIF Trust’s Guide to the Safest Countries in the World for New Residency or Second Citizenship
Mimoun A. Assraoui, our CEO, is ideally positioned to discuss the safest countries in the world for securing new Residency or Citizenship by Investment. Born in Morocco, educated in France, and based in the UAE, Assraoui is also an economic citizen of St Lucia. He emphasizes that “our desire to find a safe space is innate, a pursuit to replicate the comfort and warmth we first experienced in our mother’s womb.”
Assraoui notes that “investors are particularly drawn to the world’s safest regions, especially when considering relocation with their families.” Using the Institute for Economics and Peace’s Safety Perceptions Index (SPI), here’s our overview of the safest countries in the world to secure new residency or second citizenship, presented in reverse order:
5.) United States
With an SPI score of 0.187, the United States ranks 43rd among the 121 countries surveyed. It ranks significantly higher than countries like Brazil (115th), India (90th), and Nigeria (104th). The US EB-5 Investor Visa is a three-step process toward obtaining American citizenship. After 27 months of residency, you receive a provisional Green Card. A conditional Green Card follows 3-6 months later, leading to lawful permanent residency and eventual US citizenship after five years.
4.) Malta
On the European continent, Malta scores 0.166 on the SPI, placing it 35th among the safest countries globally. Malta surpasses countries like Algeria (61st), Kenya (101st), and Lebanon (55th). The Maltese Exceptional Investor Naturalization (MEIN) offers a direct route to Malta Citizenship through a minimum investment of €600,000. This Citizenship by Investment program allows you to obtain a Maltese passport after 16-18 months, granting visa-free access to 175 countries. For those interested in Malta Citizenship and Residency by Investment, this is a prime opportunity.
3.) Canada
Canada, the United States’ neighbor to the north, holds the 33rd position with a 0.163 score. It ranks higher in safety than countries such as Iran (75th), Mexico (90th), and Tunisia (66th). Through the Canadian Start-Up Visa Program, a C$275,000 investment grants you Permanent Residency. To qualify for Canadian citizenship, you must reside in Canada for at least 730 days (two years) over five years, and for at least 1,095 days (three years) out of those five.
2.) United Kingdom
The United Kingdom ranks 24th on the SPI with a score of 0.148. This places it above countries like Colombia (88th), Ghana (105th), and South Africa (107th). The Innovator Founder Visa provides a pathway to acquiring a UK passport, granting visa-free entry to 177 countries. Following five years of Permanent Residency in the UK, you can apply for British citizenship, all starting from a minimum £200,000 investment.

The UAE Golden Visa is the only non-European golden visa program outside of Europe. Although you can’t apply for a UAE passport, which ranks as the number one travel document in our Passport Index, UAE residency provides visa-free access to 18 countries with a minimal physical residence requirement of just one visit every six months.
