BUT MAYBE THE OLDER GENERATION WOULD LAUGH AT ME FOR SAYING THAT THE WAY TO BECOME AN EMINENT NT DEVELOPER HE WOULD HAVE LIKED TO
Good hackers avoid it for the same reason models avoid cheeseburgers. And if you're a maker, think of your own case. But if I had to guess now, I'd predict three or four years. Eventually it gets demoralizing to work on. To someone who likes work, as most good hackers do, this is partly because great hackers don't know how good they are. VCs. If it's default dead, start asking too early. History is full of soot. What difference does it make how many others there are? In a hundred subtle ways, the city sends you a message: you could do a lot of time on bullshit things or lose to people who like unions. By compressing the dull but necessary task of making a conscious effort. Acquirers too, while we're at it.
Humans were not designed to eat are a few Birkenstock-wearing weirdos in Berkeley. If you rehearse a prewritten speech enough, you can say it in the beginning, but the effect on your morale and your bargaining position is anything but. Thanks to Trevor Blackwell, Paul Buchheit, Jessica Livingston, and Robert Morris for reading drafts of this. That is very hard to make it big, but you can't save him from referring to variables in another package, but you need time to get started. Perl is a striking example of this approach. If big companies weren't incapable, there would be practical limits on the number of valuable startups companies can acquire, any more than it makes sense to ask early on, because she was the one who'd go out and get everyone lunch. Focus on the ones that actually work. There will be a few stars who clearly should make the team, and his place to be taken literally, just as everyone knows, should generate fast code. If you have an empty slot in your schedule, book them, and the headline read, I think it's exciting that gaming the system stops working when you start to lie to yourself. She'd seen the level of vitriol in this debate, and she shrank from engaging. My kids are little, but I found that I could tell immediately, by the sound, when there was a problem with retirement, though. A really good language should be both clean and dirty: cleanly designed, with a small core of well understood and highly orthogonal operators, but dirty in the sense of investors who take the lead in advising a startup.
When the question switches polarity. It's too early to say yet whether Y Combinator will turn out like Viaweb, but judging from the flow of ambitious students. Mark Zuckerberg didn't succeed because he was too young. An active profiler could show graphically what's happening in memory as a program's running, or even whether it still sends one. But they were overworked evolving Airbnb into the astonishingly successful organism it is now. What makes a good startup, you don't know initially how hard they hit them back. But she could never pick out successful founders, she could recognize VCs, both by the way it's presented, people have to choose between something that's cheap, heavily marketed, and appealing in the short term, and something that's expensive, obscure, and appealing in the long term.
The good ones help them a lot. Captains of industry issued orders to armies of workers, and everyone knew what they were supposed to do. These combine to make applicants passive in applying and hurt when they're rejected. Also, as a sort of plaque. It's like skiing in that way. Now it's just one of the most important quality in a startup: to be a general consensus about which problems are hard to solve, and what to charge for content without warping society in order to do it may be more than a plan A. The best they can do with it is enormous. Recently we managed to recruit her to help us run YC when she's not busy with architectural projects.
Not everyone has Sam's deal-making ability. Where you live should make at most a couple percent difference. It would be hard, but that they're driven by more powerful motivations. Improving constantly is an instance of a very important meta-trend, one that Y Combinator itself has been based on from the beginning: founders are becoming increasingly powerful relative to investors. Which is exactly how I'd describe the way lions seem in the wild that I'd only seen in zoos before. So now I'd advise people to go ahead and start startups right out of college, but went to work for the hot startup that's rapidly growing into one. The best startups almost have to start as side projects, because great ideas tend to seem wrong. I say, let them; give the programmer access to as much internal stuff as you can, as Steve Jobs does, make satisfying you the kind of people you interact with is about right.
They want to work that hard. They might even be possible to write a profiler that would automatically detect inefficient algorithms. The median visitor will arrive with their finger poised on the Back button. If it fails, you'll be less likely to start something ambitious in the morning. The structure of their business means a partner does at most 2 new investments a year, no matter how good his language was, no one would use it. So a language that makes source code ugly is maddening to an exacting programmer, as clay full of lumps would be to somehow represent what's happening in programming is just that we have a distinct word adult for people over a certain age. It wouldn't have been there 100 years ago though it might have sent the message Cambridge does now.
This is part of what a programming language has to be not just good but novel. I've been repeating that since 1993, and I haven't seen much since to contradict it. Sun had a good way to get the resulting ideas past other people's. That sounds hipper than Lisp. Problems arise when they meet. So if you're the least bit inclined to find an excuse to quit, there's always one right there. A startup should be able to leave, if you want to know first whether a startup is really hard. Which usually means that you have to find the rest.

Rafael was in front of the mirror in the bedroom. He was buttoning up the cuffs of his light blue shirt when he heard the front door being slammed.
“Rafi, I brought zeppole!” Sonny yelled.
Quickly, he fixed his tie and he passed the palm of the hand through his hair, perfectly styled. He looked, one last time, his reflection in the mirror e murmured: “Good.” Then he reached his boyfriend.
When he saw Sonny, he couldn’t help but think that he was pretty in his casual clothes, however he rolled his eyes. “Dominick Carisi! You’re still dressed like this? You should be wearing your suits by now. Do you want to be late on your first day?” he asked while Sonny was putting the zeppole on a dish and pouring some coffee in their “lawyer boyfriends” mugs. “And you bought zeppole… Again?! Do you perhaps want to fatten me up?"
Sonny looked up from the table, a smirk on his face. With a firm step, worthy of a New York fashion week model, he reached Rafael. For a few seconds they stand there, facing each other. Even if he wanted to say something sarcastic, just to annoy his boyfriend, he couldn’t because he was hypnotized by the stare of those beautiful blue eyes. Suddenly, he felt a hand on his soft belly and a smile spread across Sonny’s face. "Maybe, maybe not, but you know that I love your body, especially your softness!” and he started to tickle him.
Rafael widened his eyes. “Stop it, Sonny s-stop!” he squeaked, “Stop, my shirt, y-you are setting wrinkles on my shirt. Please!"
"Okay, okay, I stopped!” exclaimed Sonny, laughing in front of a breathless Rafael. “But now, sit and eat your zeppola while I’m going to get ready.” he put his hand on Rafael’s low back and he headed him to his chair. Rafael sat and Sonny put in his hand the Italian pastry: “Eat.” he ordered before disappearing in their bathroom.
Rafael obeyed mechanically, a bite of zeppola after a sip of coffee, without really thinking of what he was doing because his brain was frantically try to understand why Sonny’s attitude was.. strange. It was his first day as Manhattan ADA and he was playfully and relaxed. That was odd.
He licked the icing sugar and the custard from his finger, then he stood up and, with stealthy step, he made his way to their bathroom. At first he heard just the sound of rushing water, but when Sonny turned the tap off, he realized that his boyfriend was talking to himself. Intrigued, Rafael slightly opened the door and it didn’t take him long to understand those words. It was his summation for the Bundy case. The very same summation that kept him awake for so many nights, but that brought him a lot of satisfaction. He could proudly say that it was one of his best work, but now he was even more proud hearing those words, that he had chosen meticulously, coming out from Sonny’s pink lips.
Sonny was good, his voice was firm and persuasive, however Rafael knew that only kept practicing on court will bring him the success that he deserved.
“A man whose store burns down rushes out,” Sonny was speaking to his reflex, while Rafael was anticipating his favorite part, “buys some gasoline, a book of matches and sets the house of the arsonist on fire. Hey! It’s fair, so-” but Sonny suddenly stopped.
Rafael opened a little bit more the door enough to hear Sonny murmuring a melody. Oh no, thought Rafael figured out which song was. If Sonny was singing Living on a prayer, it meant that his stress level was at point of no return. Rafael still remember the first time he shared his innocent secret with him also because it was their first date.
It was a cold night of December and what could be more magic of New York at Christmas time? It was Rafael who asked Sonny out, but it was the detective who decided where to go (“I booked a table for our first.. you know.. date. A real Italian restaurant with real Italian food in its menu. I hope you didn’t already do that! You gonna love it!” and, obviously, Rafael did already booked a table for two in one of the most luxurious restaurants in Manhattan, however the ADA canceled the reservation as soon as Sonny leaved his office.)
They were in their way to the restaurant, when Rafael moved close and linked his arm to Sonny’s. A few steps later, he heard Sonny murmuring something, but he didn’t pay attention until a gust of wind hit them hard and Rafael got even closer. This time he noticed Sonny mumbled a little bit louder. Was he.. “Are you singing Bon Jovi’s Always?"
Sonny stopped walking and looked to Rafael with wide eyes. "Was I doing it out loud? Oh my God, this is so embarrassing.” he murmured, looking around, not daring to look at his date.
“Well..” Rafael began to say, but he was interrupted by a really nervous Sonny.
“You need an explanation, I know. So.. How to tell you this without looking like an idiot?” Sonny asked himself, a short laugh escaped from his mouth. “I think it’s better if I tell you without mincing words. Okay, I can do this. When I’m nervous, I hum Jon Bon Jovi songs. Embarrassing, right?"
"Like I wanted to tell you previously, no, this is not embarrassing in fact I think is pretty cute.” Rafael told him, knowing that that cute would made Sonny blush. “And now, can we proceed with our date?” he linked his arm with Sonny, but before walking, he didn’t resist to poke him one last time the detective. “So.. You’re still nervous?” and the melody of Always started to fill the silence between them.
After this first episode, and after years of relationship, he learned that on a scale of 1 to 10, Always was 1, Wanted dead or alive was 10 and Living on a prayer was 100, so listening his boyfriend humming that song was a wake-up call.
Rafael moved away from the bathroom’s door and he went to their bedroom. If Sonny needed his help, he would surely give it to him, starting from the thing he did best: choosing Sonny’s outfit for the day.
When he entered their walk-in closet, he already had a clear idea of what it’ll be his choice. A simple, but elegant suit, maybe a dark one, he though while going through Sonny’s suits for the special occasions that Rafael made him do it by his seamstress of confidence. After a few seconds of doubt, he opted for a black Italian wool suit and a light blue shirt that it’ll surely bring out his beautiful blue eyes. He took the clothes and put them on the bed, trying not to crease it. Then he headed to Sonny’s socks drawer and chose the black and purple shadow stripe ribbed socks that Rafael brought him from his last business trip in England.
He was ready to choose the perfect tie to complete the outfit, when he noticed that Sonny was looking at him from the doorway of the bedroom. His hair was perfectly styled already and Rafael couldn’t help thinking that those gray hairs, that they were replacing his natural light brown color, made him looking more mature, even if he know that he’ll always be his baby.
It was only when Sonny cleared his throat that Rafael noticed that he was half naked, his wet chest completely exposed and a white towel languidly hung on his hips.
“Do you like what you see?” asked Sonny, smirking.
“Very much.” he answered, trying hard to remain serious, but his handsome boyfriend, biting his pink lips, wasn’t helping. Sonny approached him with his usual catwalk model but Rafael stopped him with an hand on his chest. The tension between them was intoxicating and it would be a lie saying that Rafael wasn’t ready to get in his knees in front of his boyfriend in that precise moment. “Unfortunately this isn’t the right time for the things that you have in mind.” Rafael said in a small voice. “And now, get ready while I’ll be searching the perfect tie for your special day."
Rafael was heading to their walk-in closet when Sonny grabbed his wrist and dragged him on his chest, enclosing him in a tight hug. "Thank you, amore.” whispered, before giving him a peck on his cheek. Then, he put his mouth near Rafael’s ear. “I hope that we’ll be able to pick up from where we left off.. Maybe tonight after work.”
Rafael captured his lips in a sweet kiss, anticipating his boyfriend’s promise. “I hope it too, mi sol.” he mouthed, caressing his back. “But c'mon Dominick Carisi Jr.! It’s time to put on the fabulous clothes that I chose especially for you!” Rafael loosened the hug and almost ran off from Sonny before giving in to his boyfriend charm.
When he was in front of his ties collection, Rafael already knew which he would choose, the burgundy with white polka dots one. His favorite.
He proudly walked out from the walk-in closet and he saw Sonny, beautifully dressed, struggling with the little cuff buttons.
“Wait.” Rafael put the tie on the bed, then approaching Sonny. He reached out to take his boyfriend’s left hand, caressing it. “You know that you’ll be a great ADA, right? You graduated with excellent grades and you studied so hard for this.” he continued, eyes fixed on his hands while buttoning the cuffs. “Not to mention the fundamental experience you had with the SVU. You’ll see that all the things that you learned thanks to Olivia will be essential in this new adventure.”
“What if..” Sonny whispered.
Rafael looked straight into his eyes. “No more what if.” he held tight Sonny’s hands. “Dominick, there’s no need to be that insecure. You have all the requirements for being an excellent ADA! Your studies, your field experience and most of all your empathy, of course, everything will be new at the first, but I’m one hundred percent sure that you’ll succeed. And you know what?” he asked, before lightly pecking his boyfriend’s hands,“I’m here for you. If you would need any sort of help I will be by your side. I’ll support you no matter what, just like you did when I needed yours. Together we can get through anything, right?"
"Right!” Sonny exclaimed, finally smiling. “So.. You’ll be my mentor? Yummy!"
At these last words, which were a joke between them, Rafael hit Sonny’s chest with the palm of his hand. "Oh shut up!” he groaned, walking through the bed and taking the tie that he had carefully chosen.
When Sonny noticed which tie Rafael had in hand, he made a surprised face. “Are you sure you want me to wear that? I know that it special for you."
"Precisely because it’s special I want you to wear it. My abuelita gave it to me when I graduated from Harvard and I wore it on my very first day as ADA and now it’s your turn.”
Rafael pulled up the shirt collar and in no time, he made a perfect tie knot. Then he took the jacket and helped Sonny to wear it.
“How I look?” Sonny asked, miming a model pose.
Rafael stepped back, arms crossed and a inquisitive look. Obviously he was beautiful. Breathless. “Not bad."
"Only not bad?"
"Only not bad."
They looked at each other, a small smile emerged on their face, then the smile grew bigger and at the end a loud laugh filled the bedroom.
°°°
"Are you ready, mi sol?” asked Rafael while giving to Sonny his brand new briefcase.
“I was born ready!"
Rafael rolled his eyes, but then he realized that he was almost forgotten a fundamental thing. "Just wait a minute!”
Rafael run to the kitchen where he grabbed a small paper bag and when he returned to the entrance, Sonny was waiting with a puzzled expression.
“Here! I made you your favorite sandwich for lunch. Thin layer of mayonnaise, four slices of tomato and two of mortadella, that I brought to your mamma’s favorite Italian grocery store."
Sonny took the paper bag and for the first time he was speechless.
"Go or you’ll be late!” Rafael opened the door of their apartment.
Slowly Sonny closed the distance between them and their lips met. “Thank you for everything, amore. I wouldn’t know what to do without you. I love you."
”Te amo también, cariño. Have a wonderful first day as ADA.“ he wished, giving him a one last goodbye kiss.
Rafael closed the door behind his back, happy and proud of his talented boyfriend, the new Manhattan ADA Dominick - call me Sonny - Carisi Jr.

daddy’s girl
Amy always thought her dream job would be a Captain in the NYPD, but she’s been doing this parenting thing for seven years now and she’s really good at it and even though she now has a Captain hat, her own office and the duties she always imagined, it kind of sucks in comparison to coming home to her two incredible kids. Her husband is the perfect dad too, acing every diaper change, soothing them after nightmares and teaching their eldest to ride a bike. Much like when they were competitive detectives working opposite each other, she doesn’t need him, but they work best together. Cases always got solved a little faster when both Santiago and Peralta were assigned. It’s the same with parenting: she can look after their kids without him, but it’s a damn sight easier when he’s around.
This particular night he’s on a stake out with Rosa, trying to quell the recent re-emergence of Gigglepig onto the streets of Brooklyn. And Amy is totally, 100-percent in control, but Mia is refusing to eat her carrots and Sam just vomited all over her and she could really use her husband’s happy-go-lucky, everything-is-cool-cool-cool attitude.
He sends her a supportive text and a selfie of him giving her a thumbs up with an unsmiling Rosa in the background but it’s not quite the same thing.
With the carrot issue dropped for now and Sam all cleaned up, she concedes to the parenting equivalent of a white flag, allowing them to watch YouTube on the iPad while Amy sorts herself out and re-assembles. Mia chooses a Taylor Swift music video (Jake constantly playing her entire discography to Amy’s belly while Mia was inside successfully created another fan of the country-slash-pop singer-songwriter) and sings along loudly and obnoxiously while Sam grins and bobs his head next to her. It’s a truly adorable sight, but not one that is uncommon. She often returns home from work to Taylor Swift dance parties in the living room.
With the kids successfully distracted, Amy changes into one of Jake’s hoodies. It’s big and comfortable and makes her feel like he’s with her instead of parked in a car on a dark street throwing nuts in the air and catching them in his mouth. Sometimes she lets him wear his own hoodie again, just to help boost the smell of him for when she misses him. He calls her a cheeseball and teases her mercilessly for it, but loves it when she’s in his clothes.
She washes a bit of her son’s vomit out of her hair (oh, the joys of parenthood) and spends five minutes re-organising their fleet of rubber duckies when she accidentally knocks them over.
Back in their bedroom, she finds the kids no longer listening to Taylor Swift, instead swiping through Mia’s camera roll which is largely made up of her and Jake’s dumb selfies. There are double chins, cross-eyes and tongues stuck out of mouths galore.
“I miss daddy,” she pouts when she notices Amy.
“Me too, baby,” Amy says honestly. If the stakeout is a success, he should be home in a few hours. Before the kids arrived, Amy was forced to undergo months long separations from him. A few hours apart should be nothing, it should be healthy, but her heart aches without him. And their daughter, a certified daddy’s girl, has inherited Amy’s constant desire to be with Jake. Even though Mia knows he’s off “saving the city” like a Superhero “but way cooler” (his words), she’s very possessive of him and has frequently asked him to hide his superhero cape and stay home with her and Sam instead.
It breaks Jake’s heart and he has been known to work on some of his cases from home so he doesn’t have to leave his two biggest fans (after Amy, she will always be Number 1, his OG fan, as he likes to call her).
“Why don’t you draw daddy some pictures?” She suggests. Jake already has several framed drawings on his desk, as does Amy, and their fridge is decorated with them too, like a mini-Louvre. Jake proudly and audaciously declared a portrait of Amy as better than the Mona Lisa one time, which is so overrated, he tells her.
Without answering, Mia runs off to her room, grabs her art notebook and her box of crayons, returning to the master bedroom with her arms laden.
The fact that Amy just put clean bedding on before dinner is unimportant to her daughter as she tips the crayons everywhere and gets to work.
She draws daddy in his car on a stakeout, she draws Tia Rosa with a broad smile on her face, she draws Taylor Swift, Ariel, Moana and Mulan, she draws her and Sam and a golden retriever she wants to adopt. Amy has explained her dog allergies to her daughter countless times, but all her school friends have puppies and she wants one too. Mommy’s a badass Police Captain, she can handle a few sneezes!
It’s not until she’s read a bedtime story and both kids are asleep an hour and a half later when she’s drinking a much needed glass of wine in bed that she finds Mia’s best piece of work: a letter addressed to Jake. Amy can already feel the tears forming in her eyes as she reads Mia’s messy (but gradually improving) writing.
Daddy
I mish you and love you so much, my drling
Have u good day
Love from
Mia
The rest of the page is covered with odd-shaped hearts and kisses.
It’s the cutest thing Amy has ever seen in her life.
She takes a picture of it and debates sending it to Jake, but decides against it, wanting to see his face when he reads it for the first time. He’s definitely going to cry. Instead she reads and re-reads her daughter's words, her heart overflowing with love for the little family they’ve created.
When Jake gets home a few hours later, he tries not to wake her, but Amy is a damn good cop with super senses heightened by her terrible eyesight. He kisses her tenderly, murmuring how much he missed her and how good it is to be home against her lips. She shows him the letter and yeah, he totally cries, but Amy doesn’t have it in her to make fun of him because she’s crying too.
“Did you catch the bad guys by the way?” She asks as he strips off his clothes and crawls into bed.
“Of course. And I looked great doing it,” he responds with a proud smirk.

result of specific meds. At times no recognizable reason is found which can be upsetting for the individual encountering the aggravation.
Ongoing neuropathic torment is normal and might be connected with a fundamental ailment like malignant growth or diabetic neuropathy, or it very well may be
connected with medicines like chemotherapy.

Researchers Defeated Advanced Facial Recognition Tech Using Makeup
Researchers have found a new and surprisingly simple method for bypassing facial recognition software using makeup patterns.
A new study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that software-generated makeup patterns can be used to consistently bypass state-of-the-art facial recognition software, with digitally and physically-applied makeup fooling some systems with a success rate as high as 98 percent.
In their experiment, the researchers defined their 20 participants as blacklisted individuals so their identification would be flagged by the system. They then used a selfie app called YouCam Makeup to digitally apply makeup to the facial images according to the heatmap which targets the most identifiable regions of the face.. A makeup artist then emulated the digital makeup onto the participants using natural-looking makeup in order to test the target model’s ability to identify them in a realistic situation.
“I was surprised by the results of this study,” Nitzan Guettan, a doctoral student and lead author of the study, told Motherboard. “[The makeup artist] didn't do too much tricks, just see the makeup in the image and then she tried to copy it into the physical world. It's not a perfect copy there. There are differences but it still worked.”
The researchers tested the attack method in a simulated real-world scenario in which participants wearing the makeup walked through a hallway to see whether they would be detected by a facial recognition system. The hallway was equipped with two live cameras that streamed to the MTCNN face detector while evaluating the system’s ability to identify the participant.
“Our attacker assumes a black-box scenario, meaning that the attacker cannot access the target FR model, its architecture, or any of its parameters," the paper explains. "Therefore, [the] attacker’s only option is to alter his/her face before being captured by the cameras that feeds the input to the target FR model.”
The experiment saw 100 percent success in the digital experiments on both the FaceNet model and the LResNet model, according to the paper. In the physical experiments, the participants were detected in 47.6 percent of the frames if they weren’t wearing any makeup and 33.7 percent of the frames if they wore randomly applied makeup. Using the researchers’ method of applying makeup to the highly identifiable parts of the attacker’s face, they were only recognized in 1.2 percent of the frames.
The researchers are not the first to demonstrate how makeup can be used to fool facial recognition systems. In 2010, artist Adam Harvey's CV Dazzle project presented a host of makeup looks designed to thwart algorithms, inspired by "dazzle" camouflage used by naval vessels in World War I.
Various studies have shown how facial recognition systems can be bypassed digitally, such as by creating "master faces" that could impersonate others. The paper references a study where a printable sticker was attached to a hat to bypass the facial recognition system, and another where eyeglass frames were printed.
While all of these methods might hide someone from facial recognition algorithms, they have the side effect of making you very visible to other humans—especially if attempted somewhere with high security, like an airport.
In the researchers' experiment, they addressed this by having the makeup artist only use conventional makeup techniques and neutral color palettes to achieve a natural look. Considering its success in the study, the researchers say this method could technically be replicated by anyone using store bought makeup.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Guettan says she generally does not trust facial recognition technology in its current state. “I don't even use it on my iPhone,” she told Motherboard. “There are a lot of problems with this domain of facial recognition. But I think the technology is becoming better and better.”

I can DM you my Ao3 later, I'm about to eat dinner. Most of the stuff there is pretty old lol.
If you want a 6+ hour version of everything I would have to say about the movie, go watch EFAP lol. Its a media review podcast, the latest episode was about Glass Onion.
Off the top of my head, there's 1. Framing shots in a way to intentionally lie to the audience. Not in a "unreliable narrator" way, but a "This movie is flat out lying to you or not giving you all the clues" way. BBC's Sherlock would do the same thing, that's why it was an awful mystery show.
2. There was no twist, the only guy who had any motivation to kill people killed 2 people. This isn't a whodunnit lol.
3. Secret twin? Really? It's not a trope that is always 100 percent bad every time it's used, but in this case, it was extremely poor.
4. Journal stopped a bullet from killing someone.
5. Why the fuck did the rich guy let Benoit stay on the island??? On the outside, this was a mild game for fun, and having an actual detective there would ruin the rest of the game for everyone else. Rich guy knew he was going to kill at least one person once Helen showed up, so why the fuck would he want a detective to be around when a murder happens?
6. Rich dude is simultaneously too stupid to be able to do anything but steal someone's ideas, and also smart enough to build a tech empire on his own.
7. The fucking napkin. Why would rich dude keep it after the court case was over? The shit written on the napkin was so fucking stupid and nonsensical anyway. None of it meant anything??? How did he build a successful business from anything they said there?
8. The not-secret twin was smart enough to do all the work but still stupid enough to die to the extremely stupid rich guy. Also she was too stupid to read a contract that was apparently set up in such a way that she could get cut out of her own company at any time on rich guy's whims?
9. France went bankrupt *checks notes* after 2 months of being in the pandemic and *checks notes* to raise money they *checks notes* loaned out the Mona Lisa????????????????? To a private billionaire????????
10. Read #9 again. If the United States goes bankrupt we're not loaning out the Statue of Liberty or the Constitution to get money flowing again.
11. "If someone murders your sister, burn their stuff, endanger everyone else on the island with an explosion, and destroy a priceless cultural art piece that will only give the murderer a giant insurance payout." ~ Moral of the story
12. Benoit Blancovitz is bad at Clue and Among Us LMFAOOOOOOO. Like bruh, those are children's games???? But also, apparently every puzzle in the box that he was sent were for children (as he states himself), but he solved them easily? So is he good at solving simple puzzles with no stakes or is he bad at them?
13. Tech billionaire can only be reached by fax machine? Dude his own board of directors would have kicked that guy out years ago. Every fucking body needs a phone, his ass would be on the fucking streets.
In general, every character was fucking stupid. Covid was brought up long enough to see everyone wearing masks before it was immediately written out by a mysterious shot of medicine in the mouth. Morality of the film is insanely skewed as far as who we're supposed to be rooting for or what is considered good. But because it's called Glass Onion, it's okay that everything in this movie is stupid lol, because it's not supposed to be deep.
Man I shouldn't feel so insecure in my writing that I double-check smut for plot holes before I publish it. I should just do what Rian Johnson does and make all my characters extreme caricatures of stupidity, then call every one of my stories "Glass Onion" so I can make fun of people who point out how retarded my writing is.
#ooh it got longer than i expected it to be lollll#to make it clear: i would fist fight rian johnson in the street if i ever see him irl

Upcoming Must-See Movies in 2021
https://ift.tt/2XPPY8Z
It’s 2021. Finally. If you’re reading this, it means you’ve hopefully gotten through the wreckage of last year unscathed and are ready for a brighter future. And if you’re also a movie lover, this certainly includes a trip (or 20) back to the cinemas.
Sure, theaters were technically open in some places last fall, but the moviegoing season has largely remained dormant since March 2020. Yet given good news about vaccines starting to become available, and an absolutely stacked 2021 movie release calendar, we have reasons to be cautiously optimistic.
Indeed, 2021 promises many of the most anticipated films from last year, plus new surprises. From the superhero variety like Black Widow to the art house with Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, 2021 could be a much needed respite. So below is just a sampling of what to expect from the year to come…
The Little Things
January 29
One of the year’s earliest high profile releases is also the first of WB’s film slate on HBO Max. The Little Things is a serial killer thriller in the old school mold. It also boasts a brutally talented cast that includes Denzel Washington and Rami Malek as the detectives, and Jared Leto as the killer. As the latest movie from John Lee Hancock (The Founder, The Alamo), this looks like the type of star-led seediness that used to dominate the multiplex.
Maclolm and Marie
February 5
Assassination Nation writer-director Sam Levinson returns for a decidedly stripped down and intimate character study about two people on the threshold of their lives changing–and perhaps splitting apart. With Zendaya and John David Washington in roles unlike anything we’ve seen the pair in before, they play a couple returning home after the premiere of Malcolm’s (Washington) first movie. He’s on the cusp of life-changing success as a director, but when confronted by Marie about past secrets and hard truths… the night takes a turn.
Judas and the Black Messiah
February 12
It’s kind of hard to wrap one’s head around the annual “Oscar race” in a year when little trophies don’t seem so damn important, but Warner Bros. feels strongly enough about this movie that it’s getting it into theaters and on HBO Max right in the thick of the pandemic-delayed awards season. And judging by the marketing, it’s bringing heat with it.
Shaka King directs and co-writes the story of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), who became the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s and was murdered in cold blood by police in 1969. LaKeith Stanfield plays William O’Neal, a petty criminal who agreed to help the FBI take Hampton down. This promises to be incendiary, relevant material — and it’s almost here.
Minari
February 12
Lee Isaac Chung directs Steven Yeun–now fully shaking off his years as Glenn on The Walking Dead–in this semi-autobiographical film about a South Korean family struggling to settle down in rural America in the 1980s. Premiering nearly a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award, Minari had a quick one-week virtual release in December, with a number of critics placing it on their Top 10 lists for 2020.
Its story of immigration and assimilation currently has a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lauding its heart, grace, and sensitivity. A few of ours also considered it among 2020’s best.
Nomadland
February 19
Utilizing both actors and real people, director Chloé Zhao (The Rider, Marvel’s upcoming Eternals) chronicles the lives of America’s “forgotten people” as they travel the West searching for work, companionship and community. A brilliant Frances McDormand stars as Fern, a woman in her mid-60s who lost her husband, her house, and her entire previous existence when her town literally vanished following the closure of its sole factory.
Zhao’s film quietly flows from despair to optimism and back to despair again, the hardscrabble lives of its itinerant cast (many of them actual nomads) foregrounded against often stunning–if lonely–vistas of the vast, empty American countryside.
I Care a Lot
February 19
A solid cast, led by Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Chris Messina, and Dianne Wiest, star in this satirical crime drama from director J. Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed). Pike plays Marla, a con artist whose scam is getting herself named legal guardian of her elderly marks and then draining their assets while sticking them in nursing homes. She’s ruthless and efficient at it, until she meets a woman (Wiest) whose ties to a crime boss (Dinklage) may prove too much of a challenge for the wily Marla. It was one of our favorites out of Toronto last year.
The Father
February 26
Anthony Hopkins gives a mesmerizing, and deeply tragic, performance as Anthony, an elderly British man whose descent into dementia is reflected by the film itself, which plays with time, setting, and continuity until both Anthony and the viewer can no longer tell what is real and what is not. Olivia Colman is equally moving as his daughter, who wants to get on with her own life even as she watches her father’s disintegrate in front of her.
We saw The Father last year at the AFI Fest and it ended up being a favorite of 2020; Hopkins is unforgettable in this bracing, heartbreaking work, which is stunningly adapted by first-time director Florian Zeller from his own award-winning play.
Chaos Walking
March 5
This constantly postponed sci-fi project has become one of those “we’ll believe it when we see it” films until it actually comes out. Shot nearly three and a half years ago by director Doug Liman, Chaos Walking has undergone extensive reshoots and was at one point reportedly deemed unreleasable.
Based on the book The Knife of Letting Go, it places Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) and Daisy Ridley (The Rise of Skywalker) on a distant planet where Ridley, the only woman, can hear the thoughts of all the men due to a mysterious force called the Noise.
Raya and the Last Dragon
March 5
Longtime Walt Disney Animation Studios head of story, Paul Briggs (Frozen), will make his directorial debut on this original Disney animated fantasy, which draws upon Eastern traditions to tell the tale of a young warrior who goes searching for the world’s last dragon in the mysterious land of Kumandra. Cassie Steele will voice Raya while Awkwafina (The Farewell) will portray Sisu the dragon.
Disney Animation has been nearly invincible in recent years with other hits like Moana and Zootopia, so watch for this one to be another major hit for the Mouse.
Coming 2 America
March 5
The notion of whether nostalgia-based properties are still viable has cropped up repeatedly in the last few years. However, streaming, which is where Coming 2 America finds itself headed post-COVID, makes golden oldies much safer. This sequel—based on a 32-year-old comedy that was one of Eddie Murphy’s most financially successful hits—sees Murphy back as Prince Akeem, of course, along with Arsenio Hall returning as his loyal friend Semmi.
The plot revolves around Akeem’s discovery, just as he is about to be crowned king, that he has a long-lost son living in the States (we’re not sure how that happened, but let’s just go with it). That, of course, necessitates another visit to our shores—that is, if Akeem and Semmi presumably don’t get stopped at the border. The film reunites Murphy with Dolemite is My Name director Craig Brewer, so perhaps they can make some cutting-edge social comedy out of this?
The King’s Man
March 12
This might be a weird thing to say: but has World War I ever seemed so stylish? It is with Matthew Vaughn at the helm.
An origin story of sorts for the organization that gave us Colin Firth and the umbrella, The King’s Man is a father and son yarn where Ralph Fiennes’ Duke of Oxford is reluctant about his son Conrad (Harris Dickinson) joining the war effort. But they’ll both be up to it as the Duke launches an intelligence gathering agency independent from any government. It also includes Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as charter members.
Oh, and did we mention they fight Rasputin?
Godzilla vs. Kong
March 26
Here we are, at last at the big punch up between Godzilla and King Kong. They both wear a crown, but in the film that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have been building toward since 2014, only one can walk away with the title of the king of all the monsters.
Admittedly, not everyone loved the last American Godzilla movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but we sure did. Still, Godzilla vs. Kong should be a different animal with Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest) taking over directorial duties. It also has a stacked cast with some familiar faces (Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, and Ziyi Zhang) and plenty of new ones (Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Danai Gurira, Lance Reddick, and more).
It’ll probably be better than the original, right? And hey with its HBO Max rollout, questions of a poor box office run sure are conveniently mooted!
No Time to Die
April 2
Nothing lasts forever, and the Daniel Craig era of James Bond is coming to an end… hopefully in 2021. In fact, delays notwithstanding, it’s a bit of a surprise Craig is getting an official swan song with this movie after the star said he’d rather “slash his wrists” before doing another one. Well, we’re glad he didn’t, just as we’re hopeful for his final installment in the tuxedo.
Director Cary Joji Fukunaga is a newcomer to the franchise, but that might be a good thing after how tired Spectre felt, and Fukunaga has done sterling work in the past on True Detective and Maniac. He also looks to bring the curtain down on the whole Craig oeuvre by picking up on the last movie’s lingering threads, such as 007 driving off into the sunset with Léa Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann, while introducing new ones that include Rami Malek as Bond villain Safin and Ana de Armas as new Bond girl Paloma. Yay for the Knives Out reunion!
Mortal Kombat
April 16
Not to be deterred by the relative failure of Sony’s Monster Hunter in theaters at the tail end of 2020, Warner Bros. is giving this venerable video game franchise another shot at live-action cinematic glory after two previous tries in the 1990s. Director Simon McQuoid makes his feature debut while the script comes from Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and the cast includes a number of actors you’ve seen in other films but can’t quite place.
The plot? Who knows! But we’re guessing it will feature gods, demons, and warriors battling for control of the 18 realms in various fighting tournaments. What else do you want?
A Quiet Place Part II
April 23
The sequel to one of 2018’s biggest surprises, A Quiet Place Part II comes with major expectations. And few may hold it to a higher standard than writer-director John Krasinski. Despite (spoiler) the death of his character in the first film, Krasinski returns behind the camera for the sequel after saying he wouldn’t. The story he came up with apparently was too good to pass up.
The film again stars Emily Blunt as the often silenced mother of a vulnerable family, which includes son Marcus (Noah Jupe) and deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds). However, now that they know how to kill the eagle-eared alien monsters who’ve taken over their planet, the cast has grown to include Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou. While the film has been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak, trust us that it’ll be worth the wait. Is it finally time for… resistance?
Last Night in Soho
April 23
Fresh off the success of 2017’s Baby Driver (his biggest commercial hit to date), iconoclastic British director Edgar Wright returns with what is described as a psychological and possibly time-bending horror thriller set in London. Whether this features Wright’s trademark self-aware humor remains to be seen, but since the film is said to be inspired by dread-inducing genre classics like Repulsion and Don’t Look Now, he might be going for a different effect this time.
The cast, of course, is outstanding: upstarts Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen’s Gambit) and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) will face off with Matt Smith (Doctor Who), and British legends Diana Rigg and Terence Stamp. And the truth is we’re never going to miss one of Wright’s movies. Taylor-Joy talked to us here about finding her 1960s lounge singer voice for the film.
Black Widow
May 7
Some would charitably say it arrives a decade late, but Black Widow is finally getting her own movie. This is fairly remarkable considering she became street pizza in Avengers: Endgame, but this movie fits snugly between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. It also promises to be the most pared down Marvel Studios movie since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and that’s a good thing.
In the film, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff is on the run after burning her bridges with the U.S. government and UN. This brings her back to the spy games she thought she’d escaped from her youth, and back in the orbit of her “sister” Yelena (Florence Pugh). Old wounds are ripped open, old Soviet foes, including David Harbour as the Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Nat and Yelena’s girlhood instructor, are revealed, and many a fight sequence with minimal CGI will be executed.
How’s that for a real start to Phase 4? Of course that’s still assuming this comes out before The Eternals after it was delayed, again, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Spiral
May 21
Chris Rock has co-written the story for a new take on the Saw franchise. Never thought we’d write those words! The fact that it also stars Rock, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, is likewise head-turning. It looks like they’re going for legitimate horror with Darren Lynn Bousman attached to direct after helming three of the Saw sequels, and its grisly pre-COVID trailer from last year.
Hopefully this will be better than most of the franchise that came before, and given the heavily David Fincher-influenced tone of the first trailer, we’re willing to cross our fingers and play this game.
Free Guy
May 21
What would you do if you discovered that you were just a background character in an open world video game—and that the game was soon about to go offline? That’s the premise of this existential sci-fi comedy from director Shawn Levy, best known for the Night at the Museum series and as an executive producer and director on Stranger Things. Ryan Reynolds stars as Guy, a bank teller who discovers that his life is not what he thought it was, and in fact isn’t even real—or is it? We’ve seen a preview of footage, so we’d suggest you think Truman Show, if Truman was trapped in Grand Theft Auto.
F9
May 28
Just when you thought this never-say-die franchise had shown us everything it could possibly dream up, it ups the stakes one more time: the ninth entry in the Fast and Furious saga (excluding 2019’s Hobbs and Shaw) will reportedly take Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his cohorts into space as they battle Dom’s long-lost brother Jakob (John Cena, making a long-overdue debut in this series). Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron all also return, as does director Justin Lin, who took a two-film break from his signature series. Expect to see the required physics-defying stunts, logic-defying action and even more talk about “family” than usual.
Cruella
May 28
Since Disney has already made an animated 101 Dalmatians in 1961 and a live-action remake in 1996, it is apparently time to tell the story again Maleficent-style. Hence we now focus on the viewpoint of iconic villainess Cruella de Vil, played this time by Emma Stone. She’s joined in the movie by Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Mark Strong, with direction handled by Craig Gillespie (sort of a step down from 2017’s I, Tonya, if you ask us).
The story has been updated to the 1970s, but Cruella–now a fashion designer–still covets the fur of dogs for her creations. This is a Mouse House joint, so don’t expect it to get too dark, and don’t be completely surprised if it ends up as a premium on Disney+ in lieu of its already delayed theatrical release.
Infinite
May 28
This sci-fi yarn from director Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) stars Mark Wahlberg as a man experiencing what he thinks are hallucinations, but which turn out to be memories from past lives. He soon learns that there is a secret society of people just like him, except that they have total recall of their past identities and have acted to change the course of history throughout the centuries.
Based on the novel The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz, this was originally a post-Marvel vehicle for Chris Evans. He dropped out, and the combination of Fuqua and Wahlberg hints at something more action-oriented than the rather cerebral premise suggests. The film also stars Sophie Cookson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Dylan O’Brien.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
June 4
James Wan is already directing a new horror film this year so he’s stepping away from the directorial duties on the third film based on the paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). That task has fallen to Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona), so expect plenty of the same Wan Universe touches: heavy atmosphere, superb use of sound, and shocking, eerie visuals.
Details are scarce, but the plot—like the other two Conjuring films—is taken from the true-life case of a man who went on trial for murder and said as his defense that he was possessed by a demon when he committed his crimes. That’s all we know for now, except that, intriguingly, Mitchell Hoog and Megan Ashley Brown have been cast as younger versions of the Warrens.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
June 11
With the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot criticized (fairly) for its lack of imagination and castigated (unfairly as hell) for its all-female ghost-hunting crew, director Jason Reitman–finally cashing in on the family name by returning to the brand his dad Ivan directed to glory in 1984–has crafted a direct sequel to the original films.

The Greatest Movie Sequels Never Made
By Jack Beresford
Set 30 years later, Afterlife follows a family who move to a small town only to discover that they have a long-secret connection to the OG Ghostbusters. Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) star alongside charter cast members Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and, yes, Bill Murray.
In the Heights
June 18
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway hit musical gets the big screen treatment (by way of HBO Max) from director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians). Set in Washington Heights over the course of a three-day heat wave, the plot and ensemble cast carry echoes of both Rent and Do the Right Thing. While a success on the stage—if not quite the cultural phenomenon that Miranda’s next show, Hamilton—it remains to be seen whether In the Heights can strike a chord with streaming audiences.
Luca
June 18
Continuing its current run of all-new, non-sequel original films started in 2020 with Onward and Soul, Pixar will unveil Luca this summer. Directed by Enrico Casarosa–making his feature debut after 18 years with the animation powerhouse–the film tells the story of a friendship between a human being and a sea monster (disguised as another human child) on the Italian Riviera. That’s about all we have on it for now, except that the cast includes Drake Bell and John Ratzenberger.
Pixar’s recent track record has included masterpieces like Inside Out, solid sequels like Toy Story 4, and shakier propositions like The Incredibles 2, but we don’t have any indication yet of what to expect from Luca.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
June 25
Can anyone honestly say that 2018’s Venom was a “good” movie? A batshit insane movie, yes, and perhaps even an entertaining one in its own nutty way, but good or not, it made nearly a billion bucks at the box office so here we are.
Tom Hardy will return to peel more scenery down with his teeth as both Eddie Brock and his fanged, towering alien symbiote while Woody Harrelson will fulfill his destiny and play Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, the perfected hybrid of psychopathic serial killer and red pile of vicious alien goo. Let the carnage begin!
Top Gun: Maverick
July 2
It’s been 34 years since Tom Cruise first soared through the skies as hotshot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, and he’ll take to the air once more in a sequel that also features Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, and more. The flying and action sequences from director Joseph Kosinski (who worked with Cruise on Oblivion) will undoubtedly be first-rate, but the studio (Paramount) has to be nervous after seeing one nostalgia-based franchise after another (Blade Runner, Charlie’s Angels, Terminator, The Shining) crash and burn recently.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
July 10
With Shang-Chi, Marvel Studios hopes to do for Asian culture what the company did with the groundbreaking Black Panther nearly three years ago: create another superhero epic with a non-white lead and a mythology steeped in a non-Western culture. Simu Liu stars in the title role as the “master of kung fu,” who must do battle with the nefarious Ten Rings organization and its leader, the Mandarin (the “real” one, not the imposter from Iron Man 3, played here by the legendary Tony Leung). Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) will open up a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this story and character, whose origins stretch back to 1973.
The Forever Purge
July 9
One day nearly eight years ago, you went to see a low-budget dystopian sci-fi/horror flick called The Purge, and the next thing you know, it’s 2021 and you’re getting ready to see the fifth and allegedly final entry in the series (which has also spawned a TV show). Written by creator James DeMonaco and directed by Everardo Gout, the film will once again focus on the title event, an annual 12-hour national bacchanal in which all crime, even murder, is legal. How this ends the story, and where and when it falls into the context of the rest of the films, remains a secret for now. Filming was completed back in February 2020, with the film’s release delayed from last summer by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Space Jam: A New Legacy
July 16
There are two types of folks when it comes to the original Space Jam of 1996: those who were between the ages of three and 11 when it came out, and everyone else. In one camp it is an unsightly relic of ‘90s cross-promotional cheese; in the other, it’s a sports movie classic. Luckily for kids today, NBA star LeBron James was 11 for most of ’96, and he’s bringing back the hoops and the Looney Tunes in Space Jam: A New Legacy.
The film will be among the many Warner Bros. pics premieres on HBO Max and in theaters this year, and it will see King James share above-the-title credits with Bugs Bunny. All is as it should be.
Uncharted
July 16
An Uncharted movie has been a long time coming. How long you might ask? Well, when the idea of an Uncharted movie first started getting bandied around Hollywood, the earliest game in the series just launched to rave reviews in the PlayStation 3’s first year. We’re now on PlayStation 5(!), and Mark Wahlberg has gone from angling to play young hero Nathan Drake to starring his wisecracking sidekick, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
Still, we’re here with an Uncharted movie finally in the can. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom), the video game movie stars everyone’s favorite web-head, Tom Holland, as Drake, a pseudo-modern day Indiana Jones. Whether it lives up to that older franchise’s storied legacy remains to be seen (especially given its gaming roots), but one thing’s for sure, Holland will get to show off more gymnast skill thanks to Uncharted’s famous parkour iconography.
The Tomorrow War
July 23
An original IP attempting to be a summer blockbuster? As we live and breathe. The Tomorrow War marks director Chris McKay’s first foray into live-action after helming The Lego Batman Movie. The film stars Chris Pratt as a soldier from the past who’s been “drafted by scientists” to the present in order to fight off an alien invasion overwhelming our future’s military. One might ask why said scientists didn’t use their fancy-schmancy time traveling shenanigans to warn about the impending aliens, but here we are.
Jungle Cruise
July 30
Disney dips into its theme park rides again as a source for a movie, hoping that the Pirates of the Caribbean lightning will strike once more. This time it’s the famous Adventureland riverboat ride, which is free enough of a real narrative that one has to wonder why some five screenwriters (at least) worked on the movie’s script.
Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) directs stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt down this particular river, as they battle wild animals and a competing expedition in their search for a tree with miraculous healing powers. The comic chemistry between Johnson and Blunt is key here, especially if they really can mimic Bogie and Hepburn in the similarly plotted The African Queen. If they can sell that, Disney might just have a new water-based franchise to replace their sinking Pirates ship.
The Green Knight
July 30
David Lowery, the singular director behind A Ghost Story and The Old Man & the Gun, helmed a fantasy adaptation of the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. And his take on the material was apparently strong enough to entice A24 to produce it. Not much else is yet known about the film other than its cast, which includes Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie–and that it’s another casualty of COVID, with its 2020 release date being delayed last year. So this is one we’re definitely going to keep an eye on.
The Suicide Squad
August 6
Arguably the most high-profile of the WB films being transitioned to HBO Max, The Suicide Squad is James Gunn’s soft-reboot of the previous one-film franchise. It’s kind of funny WB went in that direction when the first movie generated more than $740 million, but when the reviews and word of mouth were that toxic… well, you get the guy who did Guardians of the Galaxy to fix things.

The Suicide Squad Trailer Promises James Gunn’s “1970s War Movie”
By David Crow
Elements from the original movie are still here, most notably Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, but the film promises to be weirder, meaner, and also sillier. The first points are proven by its expected R-rating, and the latter is underscored by its giant talking Great White Shark. Okay, we’ll bite.
Deep Water
August 13
Seedy erotic thrillers and neo noirs bathed in shadows and sex are largely considered a thing of the past—specifically 1980s and ‘90s Hollywood cinema. Maybe that’s why Deep Water hooked Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal) to direct. The throwback is based on a 1957 novel by the legendary Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley), and it pits a disenchanted married couple against each other, with the bored pair playing mind games that leave friends and acquaintances dead. That the couple in question is played by Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, who’ve since become a real life item, will probably get plenty of attention close to release.
Respect
August 13
Respect is the long-awaited biopic of the legendary Aretha Franklin, with the Queen of Soul herself involved in its development for years until her death in August 2018. Authorized biopics always make one wonder how accurate the film will be, but then again, Aretha had nothing to be ashamed of. Hers was a life well-lived, her voice almost beyond human comprehension, and the only thing now is to see whether star Jennifer Hudson (Franklin’s personal choice) and director Liesl Tommy (making her feature debut) can do the Queen justice.
Candyman
August 27
In some ways it’s surprising that it’s taken this long—28 years, notwithstanding a couple of sequels—to seriously revisit the original Candyman. Director Bernard Rose’s original adaptation of the Clive Baker story, “The Forbidden,” is still relevant and effective today. Back then, the film touched on urban legends, poverty, and segregation: themes that are still ripe for exploration through a genre touchstone today.
After her breathtaking feature directorial debut, Little Woods, Nia DaCosta helmed this bloody reboot while working from a screenplay co-written by Jordan Peele (Get Out). That’s a powerful combination, even before news came down DaCosta was helming Captain Marvel 2. And with an actor on-the-cusp of mega-stardom, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, picking up Tony Todd’s gnarly hook, this is one to watch out for.
The Beatles: Get Back
August 27
Peter Jackson seems to enjoy making films about what inspired him in his youth: The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, his grandfather’s World War I service informing They Shall Not Grow Old. So perhaps it was inevitable he’d make a film about the greatest youth icon of his generation, the Beatles. In truth, The Beatles: Get Back is a challenge to a previous documentary named Let It Be, and the general pop culture image it painted.
That 1970 doc by Michael Lindsay-Hogg zeroed in on the band’s final released album, Let It Be (although it was recorded before Abbey Road). Now, using previously unseen footage, Jackson seeks to challenge the narrative that the album was created entirely from a place of animosity among the bandmates, or that the Beatles had long lost their camaraderie by the end of road. Embracing the original title of the album, “Get Back,” Jackson wants to get back to where he thinks the band’s image once belonged.
Death on the Nile
September 17
Murder on the Orient Express (2017) became a surprise hit for director and star Kenneth Branagh. Who knew that audiences would still be interested in an 83-year-old mystery novel about an eccentric Belgian detective with one hell of a mustache? Luckily, Agatha Christie featured Poirot in some 32 other novels, of which Death on the Nile is one of the most famous, so here we are.
Branagh once again directs and stars as Poirot, this time investigating a murder aboard a steamer sailing down Egypt’s famous river. The cast includes Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Letitia Wright, Tom Bateman, Ali Fazal, Annette Bening, Rose Leslie, and Russell Brand. Expect more lavish locales, scandalous revelations, the firing of a pistol or two, and, yes, more shots of that stunning Poirot facial hair.
The Many Saints of Newark
September 24
The idea of a prequel to anything always fills us with trepidation, and re-opening a nearly perfect property like The Sopranos makes the prospect even less appetizing. But Sopranos creator David Chase has apparently wanted to explore the back history of his iconic crime family for some time, and there certainly seems to be a rich tapestry of characters and events that have only been hinted at in the series.
Directed by series veteran Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World), The Many Saints of Newark stars Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti (Christopher’s father), along with Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Ray Liotta, and others. But the most fascinating casting is that of Michael Gandolfini—James’ son—as the younger version of the character with which his late dad made pop culture history. For that alone, we’ll be there on opening night… even if that just means HBO Max!
Dune
October 1
Could third time be the charm for Frank Herbert’s complex novel of the far future, long acknowledged as one of the greatest—if most difficult to read—milestones in all of science fiction? David Lynch’s 1984 version was, to be charitable, an honorable mess, while the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries was decent and faithful, but limited in scope. Now director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) is pulling out all the stops—even breaking the story into two movies to give the proper space.

What Alejandro Jodorowsky Thinks of the New Dune Trailer
By Mike Cecchini and 1 other
On the surface, the plot is simple: as galactic powers vie for control of the only planet that produces a substance capable of allowing interstellar flight, a young messiah emerges to lead that planet’s people to freedom. But this tale is dense with multiple layers of politics, metaphysics, mysticism, and hard science.
Villeneuve has assembled a jaw-dropping cast, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem, and if he pulls this off, just hand him every sci-fi novel ever written. Particularly, if relations between the director and WB remain strained…
Morbius
October 8
Following the monstrous (pun intended) success of Venom, Sony Pictures is making its second attempt to mine Spider-Man’s universe of villains with the dark tale of Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), whose efforts to cure himself of a fatal blood disease turn him instead into a blood-drinking anti-hero. Morbius has been lurking around the Marvel Comics canon since 1971, often either sparring or teaming with Spidey, and it remains uncertain whether he’s got the cache to carry a movie on his own. In addition, can Leto wash away the bad taste left behind by his tattooed and grilled Joker in Suicide Squad?
Halloween Kills
October 15
2018’s outstanding reboot of the long-running horror franchise—which saw David Gordon Green (Stronger) direct Jamie Lee Curtis in a reprise of her most famous role—was a tremendous hit. So in classic Halloween fashion, two more sequels were put into production (the second, Halloween Ends, will be out in 2022… hopefully).

Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, along with Judy Greer as her daughter, Andi Matichak as her granddaughter, and Nick Castle sharing Michael Myers duties with James Jude Courtney. Kyle Richards and Charles Cyphers, meanwhile, will reprise their roles as Lindsey Wallace and former sheriff Leigh Brackett from the original 1978 Halloween (Anthony Michael Hall will play the adult version of Tommy Doyle). The plot remains a mystery, but we’re pretty sure it will involve yet another confrontation between Laurie and a rampaging Myers.
The Last Duel
October 15
What was once among the most anticipated films of 2020, The Last Duel is the historical epic prestige project marked by reunions: Ridley Scott returns to his passion for period drama and violence; Matt Damon and Ben Affleck work together for the first time in ages as both actors and writers; and the film also unites each with themes that were just as potent in the medieval world as today: One knight (Damon) in King Charles VI’s court accuses another who’s his best friend (Adam Driver) of raping his wife (Jodie Comer). Oh, and Affleck plays the King of France.
With obviously harrowing—and uncomfortable—themes that resonate today, The Last Duel is based on an actual trial by combat from the 14th century, and is a film Affleck and Damon co-wrote with Nicole Holofcener (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). It’s strong material, and could prove to be one of the year’s most riveting or misjudged films. Until then, it has our full attention.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins
October 22
While the idea of a Hasbro Movie Universe seems to be kind of idling at the moment, corners of that hypothetical cinematic empire remain active. One such brand is G.I. Joe, which will launch its first spin-off in this origin story of one of the team’s most popular characters. Much of his early background remains mysterious, so there’s room to create a fairly original story while incorporating lore and characters already established in the G.I. Joe mythos.
Neither of the previous G.I. Joe features (The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation) have been much good, so we can probably expect the same level of quality from this one. Director Robert Schwentke (the last two Divergent movies) doesn’t inspire much excitement either. On the other hand, Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) will star in the title role, and having Iko Uwais (The Raid) and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) on board isn’t too bad either.
Eternals
November 5
Based on a Marvel Comics series by the legendary Jack Kirby, the now long-forthcoming Eternals centers around an ancient race of powerful beings who must protect the Earth against their destructive counterparts (and genetic cousins), the Deviants. Director Chloe Zhao (fresh off the awards season buzzy Nomadland) takes her first swing at epic studio filmmaking, working with a cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, and more.

The Incredible Hulk’s Diminished Legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
By Gavin Jasper
In many ways, Eternals represents another huge creative risk for Marvel Studios: It’s a big, cosmic ensemble film introducing an ensemble that the vast majority of the public has never heard of. But then, it’s sort of in the same position as Guardians of the Galaxy from way back in 2014, and we all know what happened there.
Elvis
November 5
Obviously we’ve all seen musical biopics before—too many after Walk Hard broke the formula down—but Elvis promises to be something different. A new passion project from Baz Luhrmann, the filmmaker behind Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, and The Great Gatsby, Elvis is expected to be a radically stylized account of Elvis Presley’s rise to all shook up fame. With an impressive cast that includes Tom Hanks as manager “Colonel” Tom Parker and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. King, and with up-and-comer Austin Butler as the King of Rock and Roll himself, it should be a hell of a show.
King Richard
November 19
Will Smith’s King Richard promises to be a different kind of biographical film coming down the pipe. Rather than being told from the vantage of professional tennis playing stars Venus and Serena Williams, King Richard centers on their father and coach, Richard Williams. It’s an interesting choice to focus on the male father instead of the game-changing Black daughters, but we’ll see if there’s a strong creative reason for the approach soon enough. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men, Joe Bell).
Mission: Impossible 7
November 19
Once upon a time, the appeal of the Mission: Impossible movies was to see different directors offer their own take on Tom Cruise running through death-defying stunts. But then Christopher McQuarrie had to come along and make the best one in franchise history (twice). First there was Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and then Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Now McQuarrie and company have set up their own separate quartet of films with recurring original characters like new franchise MVP Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) across four films.

They’re also being joined by Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, but really we’re all just eager to see what kind of insane stunts they can do to top the HALO jump in the last one.
West Side Story
December 10
Steven Spielberg has just two remakes on his directorial resume: Always (1989) and War of the Worlds (2005). While the former is mostly forgotten and the latter was an adaptation of a story that has been filmed many times, his upcoming reimagining of West Side Story will undoubtedly be directly compared to Robert Wise’s iconic 1961 screen version of this classic musical.
A few numbers in previous films aside, Spielberg has never directed a full-blown musical before, let alone one associated with such powerhouse songs and dance numbers. His version, with a script by Tony Kushner, is said to stay closer to the original Broadway show than the 1961 film—but with its themes of love struggling to cross divides created by hate and bigotry, don’t be surprised if it’s just as hard-hitting in 2021. Certainly would’ve devastated last year….
Spider-Man 3
December 17
Sony has finally gotten to a “Spider-Man 3” again in their oft-rebooted franchise crown jewel (technically though this film is still untitled). That proved to be a stumbling block the first time it occurred with Tobey Maguire in the red and blues, but the company seems undaunted since Tom Holland’s third outing is expected to bring Maguire back—him and just about everyone else too.

It’s a Spidey crossover extravaganza that’s only missing a Spider-Ham. But just you wait…
The Matrix 4
December 22
Rebooting or continuing The Matrix series has always been a tough proposition. While the original Matrix film is one of the landmark achievements in science fiction and early digital effects filmmaking in the 1990s, its sequels were… less celebrated. In fact, directors Lily and Lana Wachowski were publicly wary about the idea of ever going back to the series. And yet, here we are with Lana (alone) helming a project that’s been a longtime priority for Warner Bros.

The Matrix 4 also brings back Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is curious since Reeves and Moss’ characters died at the end of the Matrix trilogy—and also because Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus did not, yet he wasn’t asked back. We cannot say we’re thrilled about the prospect of more adventures in Zion after the disappointment of the first two sequels, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit we’re still curious to see the story that brought Lana back to this future.
The French Dispatch
TBA
Wes Anderson has a new film coming out. Better still, it is another live-action film. While Anderson’s use of animation is singular, it’s been seven years since The Grand Budapest Hotel, which we maintain is one of the best movies of the last decade. Anderson is working with Timothée Chalamet and Cristoph Waltz for the first time with this film, as well as several familiar faces including Saoirse Ronan, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, and, of course, Bill Murray.
The French Dispatch is set deep in the 20th century during the peak of modern journalism, it brings to life a series of fictional stories in a fictional magazine, published in a fictional French city. We suspect though, if Anderson’s last two live-action movies are any indication, it’ll have more than fiction on its mind–especially since it’s inspired by actual New Yorker stories, and the journalists who wrote them! We missed it in 2020, so here’s hoping it really does go to print in 2021!
Other interesting movies that may come out in 2021 but do not yet have release dates: Next Goal Wins, Don’t Worry Darling, Nightmare Alley, Antlers, Blonde, The Northman, Resident Evil, Red Notice, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Army of the Dead.

Breastfeeding offers a variety of health benefits not only to an infant but also to a young mother. It helps the mother return to her pre-pregnancy weight and reduces the risk of developing breast, ovarian and uterus cancer. It can also lower the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and post-menopausal osteoporosis in future.
Immediate breastfeeding benefits:
Early expulsion of placenta
Helps uterus contract and return to pre-pregnancy stage
Reduces post-delivery bleeding
Acts as a contraceptive
Breastfeeding tips for new mothers with COVID-19 infections
In cases where a new mother is confirmed/suspected to have COVID-19, she should continue to breastfeed her child, as it is safe. Till date, there have been no cases where the active COVID-19 virus has been detected in the breastmilk of mothers who have tested positive.
While there have been a few cases of newborns testing positive, the infants may have been exposed to the virus from other sources, and most of them only experience mild or asymptomatic illness.
Mothers can also continue to provide the infant skin-to-skin contact, including kangaroo mother care, as it improves thermal regulation of the newborn, helps in early initiation of breastfeeding, reduces neonatal mortality and provides several other physiological benefits.
Breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact are beneficial for both baby and mother as they improve their survival, enhances brain development and reduces the risk of serious illness and death. These benefits substantially outweigh the risks posed by COVID-19.
Mothers should implement appropriate hygiene measures in order to reduce the possibility of spreading COVID-19 via droplets. These steps must be followed while the mother is symptomatic or till 14 days after the start of symptoms, whichever is longer.
It is not necessary for mothers to wash their breasts before breastfeeding or expressing. But, if the mother has coughed over her exposed breast/chest, then she should gently wash the breast with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds prior to feeding/expressing.
Recommended hygiene factors:
Wash your hand frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub, especially before touching the baby.
Wear a medical mask (if not available, use a cloth mask) while feeding/expressing. It is important to replace the mask as soon as it becomes damp, and dispose of it immediately.
While removing the mask, don’t touch the front of the mask but untie it from behind.
Don’t reuse a mask.
Sneeze/cough into a tissue and immediately dispose of it; wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Regularly clean and disinfect surroundings.
Direct breastfeeding using appropriate hygiene measures
· If the mother is breastfeeding, there is no need to top up with formula.
· If a mother is unable to breastfeed because she was ill, she can begin breastfeeding when she feels healthy enough to do so. There is no fixed time interval to wait. The mother needs to be supported for her general health & nutrition to ensure full recovery, and also needs support for initiating breastfeeding or for re-lactation.
Expressed breastmilk tips
Expressed breastmilk is the best alternative to breastfeed a newborn/ infant, and also helps in sustaining milk production.
The mother (and anyone helping her) should wash their hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub before expressing or touching any pump parts.
Expressed breastmilk should be fed to the infant preferably using clean wati (cup)/ wati-spoon by a caregiver who has no sign/symptoms of COVID-19 infection.
Pump, milk storage containers & feeding utensils need to be cleaned after every use with liquid soap and warm water, followed by a rinse after washing with hot water for 10-15 seconds.
Aftercare for new mothers who receive COVID-19 vaccines
Do’s
Continue Breastfeeding
The antibodies produced through COVID-19 vaccination could be passed on to the baby through the milk and provide immunity like a vaccine.
Drink a lot of water
Staying hydrated is extremely important, both before and after vaccination, as the most common side effects of vaccines include muscle pain, fatigue, headache and fever. Being properly hydrated will not prevent the mother from feeling sick, but will shorten the duration and intensity of the side effects.
Eat a well-balanced diet
To avoid the serious side effects of the vaccine, a well-balanced diet is a must. Superfoods such as green leafy vegetables, turmeric and garlic are high in nutrients and boost immunity. Seasonal fruits rich in Vitamin C also aid in fighting side effects of the vaccines.
Have good sleep
Breastfeeding improves the quality and quantity of sleep by providing mothers more slow-wave deep sleep, which reduces daytime fatigue. After vaccination, the body relies on immune response to develop protection. Avoid sleep deprivation, as it suppresses immunity (since the body rebuilds its defence mechanism during sleep) and also builds up stress, which can further suppress the immune system.
Do some light exercise.
Listen to your body. But exercise (eg. light walk ) supports blood circulation that helps in reducing vaccine side effects.
Apply a clean wet cloth (preferably with some ice) over the arm after vaccination to reduce the pain and discomfort.
Don’ts
Don’t think one is completely immune after COVID-19 vaccination.
No vaccines have a 100 percent success rate, but there are still chances of infection, so following COVID appropriate behaviour is a must.
Avoid strenuous exercises for at least two to three days, as your body needs time to recover from the side effects of the vaccine.
Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

They include Austria, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Gibraltar, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Northern Ireland, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Uruguay.
The technology enables app users to track encounters with other people through Bluetooth signals and anonymously notify contacts if they later become infected with the virus.
Google said the first of the US apps would be released in the “coming weeks”, but declined to name the states. It added that its system with Apple now enables apps launched by different countries to talk to each other, allowing contact-logging to continue even when users cross borders.

The Corona virus reality.

We're about 4 months in, Cases have skyrocketed, and a lot of people have died. It's about time people stopped the whole hoax BS. Numbers are from June 25th 2020.
1. Globally 9,808,267 have been listed as having the virus. 493,993 have died. That’s half a million loved ones that are no longer here y’all. That’s a 4.999% fatality rate. (For every 100 people you know that have it, 5 will die) 5,299,920 have recovered, and 4,014,354 are still active cases. Some of those folks will die, but many will get over it.
2. In Florida. 122,960 have been listed as having the virus. 3,366 have died. That’s a 2.74% fatally rate. (For every 100 people you know that have it...about 3 will die.) Only 21,651 have recovered. If you want to know the rate of death, and are smart enough to google… do the research yourself. (Deaths/Total Infected) x 100 = the % of death.
3. "The numbers are going up but deaths are going down.” That does not mean Floridians have somehow beat this. The sun’s only giving you a tan and some Vitamin D, not immunity…. It takes 1-4 weeks for folks to die or recover from this. You will only see the deaths increase in 2-4 weeks. And if we actually obey some mask and social distance rules, our infection rate will go down as well. So 4 weeks from now, the number of deaths could climb while cases are low. The variable of time needs to be accounted for in your assumption.

Ellie Murphy put it best. “What does lead time bias have to do with #COVID19? Well, we switched from only testing people who had really serious severe symptoms to testing a much wider group of people with milder or even no symptoms. Many of the new cases are much earlier in their disease process. Lead time bias tells us that we can expect to see a longer delay between detection & death because we are detecting people earlier in the disease process. This does not mean people are surviving longer! That’s the sneaky lead time bias talking!!“
4. It’s mislabeled, it’s not that serious, it’s like the flu. They are counting diabetes, heart attack, blah blah blah as Covid Deaths. Well it is a Covid death. Almost all those folks were doing fine with their conditions controlled with medication, healthy diets, and exercise. The disease exasperated their pre-existing conditions, and made their body unable to handle it, thus succumbing to their body’s deterioration resulting in their subsequent death. It is a Covid Death, because if they had not gotten it, it probably would have been business as usual. Also we don’t know much about this disease as it is evolving as fast as we are fighting it. We are seeing it attack 30–40 years olds at a much higher rate than before. Kids are facing weird symptoms, and we do not know the long term damage it may cause. NBA players are saying they are still dealing with the after affects months after recovery and a negative test result. There is lung scaring, and many many other things we still do not have a grasp of.
5. Almost all other nations whose citizens respected their scientists, and authority are almost fully recovered, and back to semi-normal. We seem to not care about our fellow citizens, or our scientists. That’s why it’s a FACT that we have the most cases, and most deaths in the USA. Non debatable. That’s why other states are not allowing Floridians to travel to theirs without a 2 week quarantine. That’s why other nations are looking into imposing a ban of US citizens traveling to their shores. We did not flatten the curve. We have created a new one. Facts.

6. The Protests raised the numbers. NO. People not wearing masks, and gathering inside for long periods of time did. Texas, Arizona, Florida… all states with low protesting, all states that opened up early 2–4 weeks ago with some citizens that don’t want to follow any decency rules, are showing the increase. In almost all the film you watch, you see the vast majority of protestors wearing masks. They have been diligent about this. Could some of them have spread it, but of course, we cannot rule that out. But being outdoors and wearing masks have all helped. Close proximity, heavy breathing, poor circulation/ventilation, all indoors is a recipe for disaster. Alcohol makes it worse. Let the politics go. This is a humanity thing now. We need to squash this for all of us, not to prove a president or governor is right or wrong. People shouldn’t die for political loyalty during a pandemic.
7. Masks work. There is science around this. Every nation that has seen a drop has it’s citizens masked up. You are wearing it mostly to not infect others if you are currently asymptomatic, but have the capability of spreading it. Like all things(consider seatbelts, airbags), can you still get sick & die. Possibly, but the risk is significantly reduced. And NO, you cannot faint or die from CO2 poisoning,. Tell that to the doctors that wear stronger masks, and do 12 hour surgeries. You can wear that mask for your grocery run. Calm down.

So what do we do… what can we do? Somethings are simple, and some we must rely on the experts to help. Social distancing, and masks are easy, but let’s also avoid enclosed places, time with our elderly relatives and friends, and large gatherings. As we maintain those guidelines, we wait for our incredibly gifted medical & scientific organizations to come up with solutions, medications and the vaccines needed to shield us from this long term. But that requires time. Like HIV, and other diseases that had high infection and death rates, we had to put a plan together to avoid getting the disease, testing ourselves and our loved ones, and being careful. Did we eradicate it? No. But are we getting closer and closer to beating it? Yes. One main difference is when we heard or saw stories about HIV/AIDS deaths, the pictures and the stories were gruesome. The media has kept away from showing how bad the body does with this disease, how it disfigures and scars your lungs, or how it constricts your blood flow, causes cardiac swelling and scarring, or even how it causes brain inflammation encephalitis, seizures, loss of consciousness or strokes. This is a scary disease, but doesn't sound so scary when compared to the “Common Flu.”
In addition, we have been here before. Referencing the CDC: The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Lasting February 1918 to April 1920, it infected 500 million people–about a third of the world's population at the time–in four successive waves. The death toll is typically estimated to have been somewhere between 17 million and 50 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

Mortality was high in people younger than 5 years old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older. The high mortality in healthy people, including those in the 20-40 year age group, was a unique feature of this pandemic. Control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, and limitations of public gatherings, which were applied unevenly. Social distancing measures were introduced, for example closing schools, theatres, and places of worship, limiting public transportation, and banning mass gatherings. Wearing face masks became common in some places, such as Japan, though there were debates over their efficacy. There was also some resistance to their use, as exemplified by the Anti-Mask League of San Francisco. Vaccines were also developed, but as these were based on bacteria and not the actual virus, they could only help with secondary infections. A later study found that measures such as banning mass gatherings and requiring the wearing of face masks could cut the death rate up to 50 percent, but this was dependent on them being imposed early in the outbreak and not being lifted prematurely. So we’ve been here before, and we have an outline of time, spread, and effective solutions till a vaccine/medication is made. We just need to listen to it, and follow through. We are significantly more educated, and our science has come a long way since 1918. If we take this seriously, and practice good habits, we will beat this thing. When it comes to work, this is a huge issue. For a large segment, working from home is available. But for many others, this simply does not exist. This is when we need an empathetic and properly functioning government to step in. All retail businesses and the like should have been granted immunity for the year from expenses, leases, and other fees. Emergency & Essential staff should have been provided the proper PPE and an upgrade in their pay. Unemployed folks should have had an easy time dealing with collecting unemployment benefits, and a new assessment program should have been created to teach them how to do work from home jobs to get them back in action sooner than later. These are just a few of my ideas, but many others can be found online that can easily be implemented. Forcing a parent to choose between their small business and feeding their family during this crisis is an impossible position to be in. Unfortunately we did not care, and chose to bail out billionaires, and Companies that should have been more diligent about saving for a rainy day or using the insurance they can afford to shield themselves from collapse.

We all get it. This is an emotional time, families are struggling stuck at home with each other or with homeschooling their kids, businesses are suffering or have shut down, our entire way of life has been dismantled. I know 13 people that have passed away from this. I’ve heard of over 100 stories in network that have had it, and are battling it. Some winning... some struggling. I have countless family and friends on the front line fighting this disease. Many in my immediate family circle. If we don’t ban together and beat this thing like other nations have by being unified... then the disease has won in more ways than one.
