It had been a while since you saw Sanhua, she was always on missions or doing paperwork. Which you understood as it was her job but you are one of her friends. You hoped she'd make time for you. That's why you're on your way to the city hall. To surprise her and ask her out for a drink, whenever she has the time.

The guards had stopped you from entering. "It's fine. Let them in," her expression was stern. "What's your business?" You looked around the hall for a bit before answering. "I just wanted to see you." Sanhua knows she's been negligent with your friendship. The guilt has been eating her away.

She really cares for you but with everything going on. Rover appeared, the fractsidus, Jué and everything else. She feels as if she'd been stretched thin. "And ask if you want to go out for a drink. I know your break starts in a few minutes. I can wait." You were right. There was no looming threat as of now a break wouldn't hurt.

You choose a nearby café and Sanhua seemed happy with that choice. You had a wonderful time talking and catching up which only made Sanhua realise how careless she'd been. She'd missed this. You and her just being together. She missed you and didn't want to be apart from you anymore.

Although it's inevitable, she still asked. "Would you like to be my girlfriend?" You were shocked. Sanhua's question made you understand that your feelings had been love. "Yes! Very much," then she kissed you. It was gentle, just a peck. You hope many more will follow.

To say that Alexander and James are happy to have a room to themselves again would be an understatement. Give these two an inch and they’ll be all over each other.

James: How was your first day at work love

Alexander: Good, I got a promotion

The pair’s woohoo life is paced to what James can handle. Alexander doesn’t want his husband’s heart giving out so most of the time is kissing and words rather than action but Alexander likes it that way. He’s always been a bookworm and James’ time as a teacher gave him an extensive vocabulary. Of course nothing quiet beats a quiet “I love you” whispered from one man to another around their peak.

When they’re together Alexander forgets his less than moral reasons for pursing James. Whatever his intentions were originally he’s deeply in love now. Part of him wants to keep James to himself for as long as he can but he knows James has always wanted kids. As the pair end and snuggle up to sleep Alexander sends a wish to the universe that he can be a good father. He couldn’t bear to let James down.

The morning leaves room for a different type of love as Hamlet is feeling needy and wants snuggles.

Before Milton leaves for school James makes sure to boost his confidence.

James: Just remember, if you’re comfy in that suit that’s what’s important. Other people’s tense moodlets are not your problem

James: You should know I’m seeing the social worker today

Alexander: Are you sure you’re fine going by yourself? They won’t dock us points or anything

James: You just got promoted, you have an appearance to maintain at work. Don’t worry, I have half a dozen stories of how you’ve helped Milton under my belt if they ask

The social worker has set up a meeting at the local library/café so James does not have far to travel. He gets there early and grabs a small table in the corner while he waits. Right on time the social worker shows up.

Harper: Mr Goth?

James: Yes, that’s me. Mrs Ali I assume

Harper: Yes but really Harper is fine. It’s not a trap I use to screen prospective parents, I promise

James: That’s a relief

Harper: Now I have looked over the paperwork you and your husband submitted

James: And how is it?

Harper: Obviously finances are not a concern for you

James: That's right

Harper: And you’ve retired? So there will likely be a parent at home most of the time

James: Yes, I’ll be there

Harper: Good. And what about your brother in law, Milton?

James: He’s home when he’s not at school

Harper: I mean is he prepared for a new face at home

James: He knows all about it, I think he’s rather excited about having someone closer to his age around. Uh... not that we would make them spend time with Milton if they didn’t want to. We're not trying to adopt a babysitter

Harper: A noble thought. Now I’ve looked at the hobbies you and your husband have indicated and there is one in particular who may fit well if you’re up for it. From being a teacher you must have some experience with kids that fall outside the normal

James: Um... up for it?

James: They’re not violent are they? Because I am getting on and I don’t think I could handle-

Harper: Oh no no no, don’t misunderstand me, she’s not violent

James: So what’s the challenge

Harper: I suppose you could say… she is an odd duck

James: But she doesn’t hurt others

Harper: No sign of that Mr Goth. She has been in a series of homes for the past couple of years

James: She has?

Harper: Yes. There were personality clashes with prospective parents. While I don't want to put you off I feel it's best for her to go to a family who knows what to expect. She needs her next home to be a good fit or I fear her confidence will be dashed irreversibly

James: My husband does come from a family known to be odd. What do you think we need to know?

Harper: She can be... competitive for attention

James: What teenager isn't

Harper: *laughs* true. She also tends to try charm her way through situations due to her family history which we'll need to discuss

James: I see. Are her parents still… alive

Harper: We don’t know for certain. She was left with her grandmother at the age of three while her parents went out of town on a business trip. They were workaholics apparently. The grandmother never saw them again, she assumed they had grown bored of their daughter

James: Oh. Does she have anything of theirs? To remember them by?

Harper: I- I’m not sure. You’d have to ask her

James: So did her grandmother pass away? Is that why she's in the system?

Harper: Not exactly. Do you know what an esoteric shop is

James: No

Harper: Think tarot cards, crystals, candles, teas and incense. Stuff like that. Her grandmother was running a very successful one where she helped out a lot. Just before she turned eleven her grandmother was arrested for fraud. The woman is currently incarcerated and as such cannot have custody

James: I see. So she’ll… what? Trick our money from us

Harper: Normally she only charms the gullible and despite that shows high compassion for those she feels affection for. However she can be slow to trust and open up to others. Sometimes testing them. I think with you and your husband being the intelligent sort you’ll not fall for any schemes, and your history as a teacher should have given you the ability to bond with teenagers

James: Right. So when can we meet her

Harper: You… still are interested

James: Yes. I was serious when I said all kids deserve someone in their corner

Harper: *smiles* I can set up a meeting, see if the situation would be good for your family and her

James: Does that mean she'll be interviewing us? She may not want to be adopted by someone so old

Harper: Don't worry Mr Goth. The personalities of the adopters matter a lot more to these kids than how old or mobile they are. I promise you, she does want a place to belong

Mick Management Doesn’t Just Represent Artists — It’s in the ‘World-Building’ Business

"We don't like to refer to ourselves as a management company anymore. We're a music company," says partner Jonathan Eshak.

Given the multitude of distribution, streaming, promotion and marketing options and expectations, the business of becoming an established artist has turned into a seriously heavy lift for music acts and their managers. It’s one reason that Mick Management partner Jonathan Eshak says, “We don’t like to refer to ourselves as a management company anymore. We’re a music company. What we do more than anything else is brand development, artist development — world-building … We’re not just trying to keep the train on the tracks.”

Eshak and his partner, Michael McDonald, the company’s founder, got into management after immersing themselves in other sectors of the business. McDonald served as Dave Matthews Band’s tour manager before co-founding ATO Records in 2000 with Matthews; his manager, Red Light founder Coran Capshaw; and Chris Tetzeli, who went on to start 7S Management. He opened Mick the following year with John Mayer as one of his first clients and, in 2004, brought on data savant Eshak, who worked at Universal Music Publishing Group (and is the twin brother of Island Records co-CEO Justin Eshak). Jonathan became a partner in 2015.

With a staff of approximately 20 in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville, the duo has built a boutique firm — with its own record label, Mick Music, distributed by Believe — that represents Maggie Rogers, who released the critically praised Don’t Forget Me in April; Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, who will both release albums later this year; The Walkmen and the solo career of their frontman, Hamilton Leithauser; Sharon Van Etten; Brett Dennen; Mandy Moore; My Morning Jacket; and The Marias.

In a fragmented culture where “it’s very hard to find water-cooler moments,” according to Eshak, Mick’s team excels in building committed fan bases for a roster of individualistic artists who punch above their weight. “Artists all define success differently, and we understand that,” he adds. “We understand that there’s no one way of doing it anymore.” Their bespoke approach has resulted in some notable recent successes. In August, Rogers will embark on an international arena tour — including two shows at Madison Square Garden — though she has yet to achieve platinum sales with an album. In 2018, Leithauser began a five-night residency at the swank, 100-capacity Café Carlyle in New York, playing to “a few die-hard Walkmen fans and some fairly confused business travelers,” as Eshak puts it. This year, Leithauser sold out 12 nights, and the concept will be expanded with potential notable guests in 2025. And in June, The Marias celebrated the release of their new album, Submarine, with a secret pop-up show in downtown Los Angeles for approximately 5,000 fans. Eshak says 38,000 RSVP’d.

“What each of those things speak to is us finding interesting ways that the artists appreciate and superserve fan bases,” McDonald says.

What are the challenges of running an artist management company today versus 25 years ago?

Jonathan Eshak: When I first started with Michael, the sky had started to fall on the recorded-music business. This was the dawn of file-sharing companies like Napster and Kazaa. It was attractive to join Michael for that very reason. He was coming from building a world that was unique, not just to the ebbs and flows of the success of recorded music but also, how do you do things well in touring, merchandising, etc. He understood the creation of cultures, having worked with Dave Matthews and Coran.

Like the Grateful Dead, Matthews built a culture around his music.

Eshak: The Dead were the godfathers of that, and Mick’s ethos effectively starts there. While the challenges of the industry have evolved, the code of building an artist’s career remains the same. Which is, how do you focus on building a meaningful, long-lasting relationship with your fan base? We always say, “How do we make the artist the hit and not just the songs?” Music is just part of the cocktail. It’s also, how are we creating a dynamic of connectivity between the artist and the fan? How are we merchandising with them? How are we creating live shows that are meaningful, that evolve? There’s been a lot of lip service about artist development throughout the history of recorded music.

Michael McDonald: There were fewer breakthrough moments then, whereas today, because of the way technology and culture has evolved, it’s been democratized. The upside is that more people can succeed. The downside is there are fewer channels that create that star-turn moment.

Maggie Rogers seems to be a prime example of someone who has grown through connectivity with her fans.

Eshak: Maggie has understood the importance of connectivity from the start. She had this moment of Pharrell-ity, for lack of a better word, and instead of sitting back and working that, she understood the importance of going around the world and connecting with her fans face-to-face. To your point, she’s doing two nights in Madison Square Garden without a platinum record. Now, she obviously wants that and we want that for her, but people who are in are in. Even as she’s grown, the No. 1 thing on the checklist is, what are we doing for that audience?

What’s an example of that?

Eshak: When we were announcing the fall arena tour, we created pop-up shops in all the markets where people could line up to buy exclusive merchandise and, most importantly, reduced-price tickets. She was hearing from unsettled fans about ticket prices, so we tried to create solves. Fans could walk [into the pop-ups], point at a seat map and get a ticket that was going to cost less than if they paid for it online. Because of that, her fans understand that she sees them.

What questions do you ask before signing an artist?

McDonald: Most importantly, “Do we love the music? Do we feel like we can really grow this career?” And then, “Do they, will they, work hard?” We can’t want it more than they do. Some of this is research you can do before you meet the artist. Much of it we do through conversations, but there’s also data that’s crucial. We’ve had great success following our passion and guts, but to not use the tools at our disposal to help make those decisions would be foolish. Data is a great strength of Jonathan’s and why we’ve evolved in using it to inform decisions but never to unequivocally make decisions. If we did, we never would have signed some of the artists we have.

Why did you partner with Firebird?

McDonald: Firebird brings us resources that a company our size doesn’t have. There’s a data department and an analytics department of 10 to 15 people. There’s a finance department. There are all sorts of things that allow us to double down on the data and free us up to stay focused on our artists.

What’s your pitch to artists you want to sign?

Eshak: It really comes down to having a shared code, so it’s important that we take the time to sit down with artists and say, “What are your life goals in addition to success in recorded music?” This is such a deep relationship that we talk all the time. We talk on weekends. We’re there with them for very big life stages, and it’s really important for us to have at least a common set of goals because it takes a lot out of everybody. Where we do a good job is acting almost as coaches now. It’s our job to be highly informed about how people are having success, distilling that and applying it to the artists that we represent, who are all quite different. In other words, how can we do this with you so that you remain true to yourself? We can’t do that for a thousand artists. It’s not the business model that Michael and I have elected to build.

You have a label.

Eshak: We have a label, and we’re working with some of our artists whose repertoires are returning to them and they need a mechanism to put music out. Some of it is also identifying artists that we like and helping them put music into the world.

Do you encourage your artists to own their masters?

McDonald: One hundred percent, whenever possible. Today, we would be hard pressed to pursue a deal that started with perpetuity music being somewhere else. There’s always a chance that it’s going to happen, and ultimately, it’s an artist’s decision. If they feel like this is their shot and they’re willing to give that up — absolutely. But one of the reasons we created the label was to say, “All right, let’s have an easy mechanism where we can control the deal terms. Let’s put music out and try to build on that. Then, if a great licensing option is not available today, let’s take a year and try to build something.” Ray LaMontagne’s album Trouble reverted to him in May after 20 years. So it’s not always a three-year or five-year reversion. But 20 years ago, we were able to take a long view and say, “Let’s take whatever percentage less today so at least there’s the option to sell those recordings X number of years later.”

Are your agreements with artists traditional percentage deals or partnerships?

McDonald: It varies. We have a lot of traditional deals, but any time we’re in true partnership, where we’re sharing [intellectual property] with an artist, it’s fully above board and clear with everyone’s legal teams. There is an evolving way that artists are going to get into business with different companies. We welcome that as things evolve.

Disney Television Animation X Walt Disney Imagineering Collaboration "San Fransokyo Square" Sets Opening Date, Confirms Big Hero 6 The Series Easter Eggs

After being promised at the recent D23 Expo, we are now getting an update from Walt Disney Imagineering, revealing that San Fransokyo Square is arriving at Disney California Adventure, August 31, 2023 as part of the 100 Years of Wonder at the Disneyland Resort.

The area will have some elements debuting in the month and a half as a lead-up.

During a PR Preview provided by Laughing Place, it was confirmed that the area will be featured with easter eggs from the various iterations of the Big Hero 6 story, including the Disney Television Animation's Big Hero 6 : The Series and Walt Disney Animation Studios Baymax! provided by both studios.

Starting in mid-July, you’ll be able to sample new San Fransokyo selections at Lucky Fortune Cookery, and the Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería will officially open. In the weeks following, additional dining options, unique shopping and more will be introduced as the transformation of this thriving seaside plaza continues through its official debut on August 31st.

When the transformation is completed, locations across the area – from the Cappuccino Cart outside the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge to The Bakery Tour – will be decked out in street art and colorful banners celebrating the Big Hero 6 team after their victory over Yokai.

The diverse array of flavorful fare in San Fransokyo Square will include current favorites and new creations inspired by Asian cuisine, as well as the Big Hero 6 themselves. Aunt Cass Café, the second bakery café operated by Hiro’s loving aunt, will serve dishes, soups in freshly-baked Boudin sourdough bread bowls and more inspired by Japanese cuisine. On the outside of this quick service restaurant, you’ll find a mural of Aunt Cass’ lucky pet cat, Mochi.

An old fishing net tannery across from the café is being converted to Rita’s Turbine Blenders, a giant drink dispenser offering delicious margaritas and icy beverages. This refreshment stand is owned and named after the repair technician who maintains the floating wind turbine, resembling a giant koi fish, that sits atop the structure.

Guests will also be able to meet with Baymax, who will talk for the very first time!

Fun, I'll do my best to answer.

1.) Sellie.. they don't strike me as particularly romantic people. Whatever they did would be very low key. Probably a romantic dinner at home followed by watching a movie both of them like. Nothing overly romantic, of course. Or, maybe a little bit of dancing if they're in that sort of mood? Sean definitely surprises Ellie with flowers or something she secretly likes, though. Also, in my mind, Sean and Ellie have at least one kid by now. So they probably arranged for Marco, Jay/Manny, or some other trustworthy person to babysit until the next morning.

2.) So first things first, this was Zaya's first Valentine's Day as an engaged couple. Don't ask me why I've decided that, but in my mind they got engaged on New Year's Day after coming home early from a party. What I was expecting to be a quiet weekend turned into a quite active one. We decided to go to the baseball on Saturday, which is always fun - not because the game is exciting, but the whole experience is entertaining, especially people-watching. But it's not an especially cheap excursion - our decent tickets were a tad over $100 each, and drinks and food probably added more than another $100, for 'standard' fare at a baseball game (burger, hot dog, chicken tenders). At least we got a free bobblehead, celebrating the centenary since the Washington team won the "World" Series in 1924, which my wife has given to someone at work for their son. I should point out that it's not been 100 years since they last won it - that was 2019.

On Sunday morning my wife and I had agreed to go out for a bike ride along the Potomac trail. I guess we were out for a little over an hour and our legs were feeling it for sure, this despite the fact that I ride a bike to work three days a week and use the exercise bike on the two other week days. I've had to start using my own bike to get to work - the Bikeshare folks have decided to remove the dock that's closest to the house. They didn't give a particularly convincing response when I queried them about it, but it may turn out to be just a temporary thing. Given the amount of use that dock gets, it had better be!

The wedding visitors returned from the hotel to spend a couple more nights with us on Monday and Tuesday. The first night we were joined by the happy couple and the bride's parents at Filomena. Now this is a restaurant that I had a bit of a down on because my belief is that my debit card got ripped off (the first time!) from there. As it turns out, I've now decided I don't much like the food there either - the risotto they served up looked more like porridge.

Monday evening, the happy couple from the weekend were here and her parents (all related to Alison's friend) joined us for dinner at a restaurant that wasn't on my list of places to revisit because I believe my debit card got scammed there a few years ago. And as it turns out, I don't like the food there much either!

The following night we went to Café Milano, which we have been meaning to go to for a while now. It's not cheap, but the food was WAY better than the previous evening. And we met a couple who have been friends of our visitors for years, since they lived in London. They were very jolly people and hopefully we will catch up with them again soon as they live in Bethesda, 20 minutes or so away. We will have to - they paid for dinner, so we certainly owe them!

But now we're off on a flight to Cleveland, to go to a nephew's wedding on Saturday.

TÜRKIYE!!!

We had pitched our tent just before the border in the Roma village of Lesovo. We slept in the park and could use the toilet at the bar. Very quickly children came by to see what was up in the park, speaking the little English or German they could with us. We were definitely the entertainment for the evening.

The next morning we jumped on our bicycles (not as early as we would have liked) and reached the border in no time. There was a fairly long queue, but cars were more than happy to let us jump the queue. Border agents on both sides were more concerned with our well-being (insisting that we be careful), rather than checking our papers, one Turkish agent, excepted. He insisted that Payal open her saddle bags, but was disappointed that there were only clothes and some bike tools! While he decided to halfheartedly interrogate René regarding what he was carrying, another border guard was giving Payal suggestions of where to go on the Black Sea, his home region.

We missed the turn-off for side roads, but the main road did not have much traffic and the shoulder was wide. Added benefits were a tasty restaurant along the way, a direct route to Edirne, our halt for the night, and a very nice truck driver who stopped to give us ice water, as it was getting hot!

Edirne, at the confluence of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey has been fought over many times throughout history. It was the original capital of the Ottoman Empire and today is known for three mosques, including the Selimiye mosque, which was designed by the chief Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. Due to renovations, we were only able to see a small corner of the mosque.

We also visited the restored synagogue. After a fire in 1905 had destroyed a number of synagogues, the Jewish community came together to build a large synagogue, which opened in time for Passover services and celebrations in 1909. After the last Jewish families left in the '80ies, the synagogue fell into disarray. A fund for historic buildings restored the synagogue and it reopened in 2015. Seeing how multi-cultural and multi-religious this region of the world had been once - Jews, Muslims and Christians living side by side, along with Turks, Greeks and Armenians was juxtaposed by the 100 year Treaty of Lausanne, which took away the rights of most minorities in order to move modern Turkey toward a modern homogeneous state. Edirne also has a museum and monument dedicated to the Treaty. We did not visit it, but at the end of August Payal will be moderating an event about borders and the Treaty of Lausanne.

On a happier note, we experienced a lovely sunset on the Meric bridge, followed by seeing it lit up at night. After talking some filmy shots, we went to a what we thought was a restaurant on the edge of the bridge for dinner. It was actually a café run by the teachers' union in Edirne and only served tea and snacks. Somebody spoke to us in English and asked us if we were cyclists. When we replied affirmatively, he invited us for a tea and introduced his friend, who was the manager of the café (but actually a geography teacher!). They are part of a nature club, often going hiking, mountaineering and cycling. We shared stories about mountaineering. Bulent told us that there are indeed women in their club; he also gave great tips about visiting the Black Sea, as he grew up there. One of the best aspects of the trip was meeting connecting with people from all walks of life and realising how much we have in common with complete strangers!

We also went for a drink at a hotel bar and our waiter turned out to be a sculpture artist. Serghei's family is Russian, but he grew up in Istanbul and is now based in Edirne. He shared with us how difficult it is to get by in Turkey due to the poor economy. It's not just artists who take any job they can get or have to moonlight. It is a shame, because we saw how talented he is - do check out his work online. While we can't fix the problems of the Turkish economy. we decided that we can at leave a big enough tip so that he could invite someone out for a nice meal!

From Edirne, we made our way to the Black Sea, only 160 km to go, but lots of small hills to tackle along the way. We found a shady bench in front of a mosque and decided to have lunch there. Little did we know that 40 children were inside attending madrassa (religious school) and were about to be released for a break. As is often the case with children, they are timid at first, only to untie their tongues to ask us 1,001 questions, showing off any English they know! They wanted to know where we slept, how we washed our clothes and ourselves! They wanted to know how Payal ended up in Switzerland from India and the US and they also began to ask us if we were Muslim and whether we prayed. Payal let them know that India was a country with all religions living peacefully together (unfortunately not true anymore) and that all religions lead to the same path, they seemed satisfied. Had the teacher not called them back in, they would have likely been happy to ask us another 1,001 questions!

We continued to meet people in Turkey on the street. In Kirkarelli, a small city we passed through, we met a farmer who bought us a tea at the local tea shop and then insisted that we come to his house for a meal despite having just finished our lunch. Payal told René that we had to go so as not to insult him and we are so glad that we did! His wife made us an omelette out of fresh goose eggs from their yard and the best butter milk we have ever tasted (even better than lassi in India!). Thanks to Google translate we were able to have an interesting conversation with him and his granddaughter. He told us about his political work; he is in a party that opposes Edogan and was disappointed about the election outcome. He has gotten passports for his family with the hope that they could travel, but the inflation and the weak Lira makes it almost impossible to afford basic items. We also heard about how his daughter is fluent in German and English and managed to study at university. Due to the bad economy, she cannot find a job in economics and instead works in tourism on the Anatolian coast. In moments like this, we realise how lucky we are to be able to decide what we want to do with our lives. We are a very privileged minority, who often forgets how good we have it compared to the majority of humanity. We realised that those with the least, were the ones most giving of their time and resources.

After taking a group picture, it was time to move on. He sent us onto a road that was a direct route to the Black Sea, but it was so hot that the tar was melting and the rubber of our tyres was sticking to the road! We decided to take an older road, which had more gravel mixed in it.

We could either go to Igneada or Kiyiköy; both were about the same distance from Edine and our new friend Bulent had talked about how green and beautiful Igneada was. In the end, we went to Kiyiköy, only because it was closer to Istanbul and we could camp there. There was a major hill at the start of the ride, followed by long uphills with only short downhills - very unsatisfying! By the time we arrived, it was so hot and we realised we didn't want to camp. For the first time ever, René actually wanted air conditioning!

We were quite happy that Kiyiköy is not a fancy resort destination. Rather people who lived nearby came there for the day or weekend. But this meant that we had to check the rooms to make sure the AC was working and the window screens were not full of holes. Once we managed to find a hotel, we headed for the best lunch we had had in a long time - an older couple had a small restaurant and guesthouse. Everything was extremely fresh and made with love. The woman convinced us that we must try her signature dish and she was right!

Finally it was time to jump into the sea and get some reprieve from the heat. Both of us prefer freshwater to the sea, but the cold Black Sea felt like heaven! The beach we went to was small and laid back - we were able to rent an umbrella for a decent price and there were toilets and showers. It was nice to not have to a break from cycling or being a tourist. We were just chilling at the beach. In the late afternoon we made our way back to the hotel, looking forward to a shower and a nap in a cool room, only to find out the air conditioning was busted. We were able to switch to the fanciest room in the house for the same price!

The next day, the big boss was at the guesthouse and wanted us to switch rooms - as he couldn't speak English, he made his colleague do the dirty work! Payal was not happy and made it known that she would not be shifting rooms. Luckily, René is better at staying calm in such situations and told Payal to be quiet! In the end, René made the boss speak directly to him using Google translate and told me that he hopes he wouldn't go back on his word, which did the trick! Thereafter we were able to all shake hands and be on good terms. During this trip, we realised how we are able to balance each other out and that being in partnership makes life easier and more enjoyable!

The rest of the day was spent at the beach, followed by a drink at a restaurant, which turned into eating dinner and dancing to traditional music with Güven and Eda - Güven is the life of the party! He got half the restaurant up and dancing and then insisted that we sit with them. His wife Eda spoke some English, which we then followed up with our favourite Google Translate! She has a way of answering with either humour or poetry. It was lovely to hear how she looks to enjoy life and be kind to others. Eda's teenage daughter was also there, a little bit embarrassed by the partying of her mother and step-father :). For both Güven and Eda this is their second marriage - they met in the factory that they work in; when you are travelling and don't have a common language you suddenly become more of a human than usual - you are not identified by your profession and you connect with people on the most basic level, meaning you interact with people that you normally wouldn't. It is nice to get out of our bubble and beat back assumptions we hold.

We left Kiyiköy early in the morning toward Istanbul, as it was getting very hot! Komoot, our bicycle app was taking us off-road and we became suspicious and we were contemplating what to do. Suddenly another bicyclist on tour came out of no where. It was the first time we saw a Turkish person cycling with a load (see the photo!). Achmed spoke excellent German, as he was there for five years when he was younger. He regularly camped on the Black Sea and travelled between his home and the ocean (about 40 km). He spends a lot of time on the sea to deal with the tragic death of his son many years ago. We parted ways, only to meet up again in the next big city and had a lovely lunch together.
