Pissed Off? Let Me Help You With That...
One busy night in a bustling ER, the Doc was having attitude with everyone. I was tired of everyone running away from him like he was a monster. I was tired of him being snippy with everyone. It was busy, we were all stressed, so I thought I should intervene.
"Does anyone have a maxi pad?" I asked the nurses. One of the nurses obliged kindly. I went into his office. My friend (another nurse) begged me not to do whatever it was I was about to do.
"What the Hell are you doing?" She looked at me wide-eyed.
"There is only one way to fix this night". I stuck the pad down in the middle of the seat of his office chair while he was in a patient's room.
"He is already so mad!" My friend vehemently expressed her concern for me and the rest of the ER staff, as if he might just kill us. I knew she was mainly worried about job security. I could empathize, I remembered having those feelings too.
"Yeah, he is already pissed. Exactly. What is he going to do? Be even more angry? I figure I got a 50/50 shot at making him laugh or pissing him off more. We are all working our asses off (including him) and he is grouchy as fuck! It isn't going to get worse," I reassured my friend, "It'll be alright".
About 10 minutes later he entered his office and closed the door. We all waited with bated breath. It could have went either way, but I was willing to accept the risk on this night, because I was getting irritated too.
He came out of the office wearing the maxi pad stuck to the FRONT of the crotch of his pants. He looked at me and pointed at the pad. "Was this you?" He looked at me very seriously.
I started laughing so hard, I couldn't hold it back. Even if he was angry. It was obvious to him that it was me who put the pad in his chair. Even if I hadn't laughed, I think he knew everyone else working that night was scared of him.
Then suddenly, he started laughing too...to everyone else's relief. He shook his finger at me. It was amazing, and it worked out way better than I thought it would. His mood changed and he was so much happier all evening. It changed the entire mood in the department for the rest of the shift. Who would have thought a maxi pad stuck to a seat could change an entire ER's attitude for the night?
I would totally do it again. Thank God Doc didn't take himself as seriously as he presented to the staff. I always respected his skills and liked working with him prior, but after this shift, it seemed he had even more of a mutual respect toward me. Go figure!?
***Disclaimer: I do not recommend this move without at least 10-15 years of experience in the field of said Doc under your belt and really "knowing your shit". I would also recommend being hard working, kind, and respectful 95% of the rest of the time. Even then, it still might end badly, depending on the dynamics of the department, and coworkers. This is one of those "read the room" scenarios in which I am notoriously BAD at in ALL situations except in the ER or in the hospital in general.
#50/50 shot#could go either way#I'm willing to risk it#Ended better than I could have ever expected#read the room

Say 'Bye to Neon
A classic article about nitrous, tuning, and general rental car tomfoolery.
Mopar Action, April '98, pp 21-23
Story by: Richard Ehrenberg
Ever want to nitrous your ride, but were afraid you'd grenade your mega-dollar motor into smithereens, or trash your daily driver? Well, fear no more. For the measly sum of $19.95, we can absolutely guarantee that you won't blow YOUR motor. How? Heh heh heh. Just rent a car from your local, smiling Thrifty agent (we highly recommend the sunny Phoenix locations.) His motor + your nitrous system = no problem. Experience the thrill of nitrous, totally uninhibited. No longer will you feel the urge to back off because you're afraid of scattering YOUR dollars along the side of the road or at the strip. It's like hot fudge sundaes without the guilt. Mopar Action's staff, the same people who brought you the Rental Car Nats and the famous "push-o-war" (nose-to-nose burnouts), are out on a brief furlough from Nurse Ratchet's psycho ward, and will outdo themselves again by showing you how to knock over 3 seconds off a bone stock Neon. Yeah, you got it! 16.90 @ 81MPH to a zero-traction 13.82 @ 102. Have we got chrome-moly spheres, or what?
We slammed together a supersimple N2O system for our bone stock 3-speed automatic rent-a-Neon (with 13-inch wheels!!) The setup consisted of readily available parts from the NOS nitrous catalog and the local NAPA parts store. Our goal was to make no engine mods and unbolt nothing from the car during installation. In other words, we wanted to be smarter than O.J., and leave no incriminating evidence behind (is America a great country, or what?)
The system consisted of an N20 tank held in the back seat by the lap and shoulder belt, a length of braided hose laying on the carpet, and routed through the unused clutch-cable firewall hole, the cheapest electric fuel pump we could find, nitrous and fuel solenoids and two simple injectors. The injectors consisted of nothing more than two short lengths of 3/16" brake line tubing with the solenoids attached at one end and 2 NOS-modified "AN" fittings that accept NOS nitrous and fuel-metering jets on the other end. A painless incision into the soft plastic air box hose allowed N2O and fuel to be injected directly above the throttle body. The whole deal was held in place by duct tape and cable ties. Replaceable jets allowed precision tuning of the system to any level of insanity desired. Auxiliary fuel (alcohol "drygas") was stored in the windshield washer reservoir and the small electric pump was added to supply fuel (the windshield wiper fluid pump will not supply enough fuel) to a solenoid. This setup was rigged into the horn wiring to open the solenoids when you punch the horn button (we did disconnect the horn button).
So how did it work? Awesome. Simply awesome. We started out with a 50HP nitrous jet with 100% excess fuel. Hitting the horn at 4000RPM in 2nd gear felt like 15 lbs of boost. Were we happy? Nope! Onward to the 75HP jet and only 50% excess fuel. The Neon was amazing. We worked up the guts for 1800 RPM launches in first gear. Oops out of nitrous, before you can say: "Thrifty." Luckily, we had brought a second bottle.
The entire Mopar Action staff flogged the Neon mercilessly, but we couldn't break it (yet). The high (low?) point came when "Crazy" Eddie Yeznaian, intrepid rally racer and wildebeest extraordinaire, actually power-braked the car to the floor, cut the wheel to the left, and hit the nitrous in reverse. Nothin' like nitrous doughnuts after a hard day at the office! (Since this was done in the rain, does that make it Dunkin' Donuts?) If you can imagine what it must be like to be trapped in a spinning top at 200 RPM, you get the idea. Where are the air-sickness bags for this ride? H-E-L-L-L-P!
After the second full 10 pound bottle of nitrous had been greedily half-guzzled by the motor, we decided to go for broke before it was empty. We slipped in the killer 150HP jets. Is this sick, or what? We more than doubled the stock HP output! Jeeez! 13.82 @ 102mph. The motor took first gear launches at 2000RPM with cylinder pressures that should have shot the plugs through the hood, and exhaust gas temps that were slightly hotter than the surface of the sun.
Could the Neon go faster? And, mainly, would the converter stay in the transaxle, or launch like a Saturn rocket and slice our legs off at the knees? (And, do they rent hand-control Neons?) For our last runs of the day, we leaned out the fuel jet for only 5% excess fuel and stuck our guinea pig editor, Cliff "Pleeeeease don't blow the motor, guys!" Gromer behind the wheel. For his first duel, Cliff matched himself up with an automatic Mustang GT at the track. The pony car came out of the shoot even with the Neon, and pulled ahead by the 300-ft mark. The Neon, now in second, gets juiced by Gromer. Result? Like taking candy from a baby. Cliff's little rent-a-PL was so far out on the 'Stang that he was able to back off in third, turning a 14.15 at 96.7.
Later, in an impromptu street run from a 10mph roll-on, Cliff, the sick puppy that he is, hit the horn button in first gear, right on the "3" count, the 2-liter Twinkie motor screamed for mercy, the tires spun all the way through first gear. We were fender to fender with a fast 440-6 Challenger R/T. He ripped his piston-grip to second, but we pulled ahead. Clifford boiled the tires big-time into second gear, allowing the R/T to pull alongside. The Neon mini-motor wound tight-right to the rev limiter. Did Cliff lift? Did he back off? No chance! Ka-boom! A glowing three-foot fireball barked out of each side of the hood, and rolled back over the windshield. Cheeez! This actually caused the R/T driver to lift, but not Cliff! Wow. Say goodbye to Neon.
We pulled over, fully expecting to see rods hanging out of the block. Surprise. Only the airbox is blown apart. With the leaned out fuel system and the motor running so far into the rev limiter that the stock injectors were shut completely off, we musta floated the valves and backfired through the intake system. The motor was running a little rough (a slight understatement) and we're sure we bent at least one valve, or, more likely, blew the head off of a couple. Guess we should have followed Mark's rules (see sidebar). Needless to say it was the best $19.95 we ever spent. We gassed the Neon back up and limped back to the ever-smiling counterperson.
Thanks, Thrifty.
By the way, if you're interested in renting a Neon for $19.95 a day to go mustang hunting, Performance Resource is currently looking into marketing a complete nitrous kit (minus the bottle) that is jetted and flowed, and that you can bolt onto your rental Neon (or your own Neon for that matter) in less than an hour. Just so there's no misunderstanding, the kits are not available at this time, but they can be whipped together if there's sufficient interest out there in Neonland.Â
When vacationing becomes safe about a year or two from now, this might be a good reason to add an extra day to the rental.

One afternoon in 2014, May Bernhardt, an 87-year-old Inupiat Eskimo with stringy gray hair, toothlessly chewed a banana. The fruit was perfectly ripe and a good source of fiber and potassium, but she hated it.
Bernhardt lives in a nursing home in the Alaskan Arctic, and like the other Inupiat elders in the home, she was accustomed to being served imported foods from faraway climes. But she and the others craved the traditional Inupiat foods they grew up eating. Most of them were raised in the bush of northwestern Alaska living a mostly subsistence lifestyle, eating caribou, fish, wild tundra berries, and marine mammals like seals and whales. Once they moved into the nursing home, a wooden building atop stilts drilled into permafrost beneath the grassy tundra, they had to eat what the home provided. And that meant bananas, green beans, potatoes, and pasta.
âYou canât get an old-timer Eskimo and just switch them over to white [peopleâs] food. Such a big change donât agree with âem,â Bernhardt complained. Richard, another elder sitting nearby, 66-years-old and gray at the temples, concurred with the assessment.
The problem is they didnât have much say in the matter. Federal regulations determine which foods can be served in most nursing homes, and traditional Inupiat foods, the most unique of all Native American cuisines, sorely conflict with rules for nutrition and food safety. Since 2011, when the elders moved into the nursing home in the town of Kotzebueâwith a population of 3,000, itâs Alaskaâs largest town above the Arctic Circleâa distant federal bureaucracy thousands of miles away had come between them and the wild, meat- and animal fatâbased diet they had grown up on.
They complained. And the staff at the nursing home listened and brought their concerns southâto dieticians in Anchorage, health care providers, and Alaskan politicians. Soon, they had sparked a battle between this far-flung nursing home and the federal government that would embroil this tiny Arctic town in a tangled web of nutrition politics.
When Val Kreil arrived in Kotzebue in 2013, he planned to stay for three weeks as the nursing homeâs interim director. A soft-spoken middle-aged man, balding with a few tufts of red hair, Kreil had worked in more than 30 nursing homes throughout the âLower 48,â as Alaskans call the continental U.S.
But Kotzebue charmed him immediately. He liked the homeâs diverse staff from all over the country and world. Sure, the negative-40-degree winter days and ferocious winds were daunting, but the hardy locals amazed him with their good nature despite living in one of the Earthâs harshest climates.
More than anything, Kreil was impressed by how the Inupiat community showed respect toward its elders. In his vast experience, Kreil explained, âKotzebue is the only place where I have seen elders truly respected. In the Lower 48, itâs more just lip service.â He admired the Inupiat tradition of young hunters always sharing their catch with elders, a sign of deference in a hunting-centered culture. So Kreil signed on as permanent director of the countryâs northernmost accredited nursing home, known as Utuqqanaat-Inaat in Inupiaq.
And then he started to hear the complaints about the foodâcomplaints that went deeper than the expected dissatisfaction from constant cafeteria food. The home had a strict meal schedule, as in other nursing homes, one designed to meet the nutritional goals determined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and enforced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, which determines reimbursements for all accredited, federally funded nursing homes like Kotzebueâs. Kreil knew his nursing home depended on federal reimbursement, and receiving that money required he serve only USDA-approved foods. He answered the eldersâ supplications by blaming âthe Lower 48âand the elders knew exactly what I meant.â
The only exception to the prohibition against traditional foods in the nursing home was during monthly âpotlucks.â On the first Monday of each month, a long buffet table stretched across the nursing homeâs dining hall with bubbling caribou soup, raw whale blubber, baked salmon and sheefish, wild berry desserts, and a bowl of seal oilâthe quintessential Inupiat condiment and all-purpose dip. Steam would curl upward into the hallâs high, latticed ceilings as residents and their relatives, who provided the spread, feasted. (It could not be prepared in the nursing homeâs kitchen or served using its plates or cutlery.) Potluck foods, legally considered âgiftsâ to the elders, were exempt from the official tallies of caloric intake that counted toward nutritional goals.
When Kreil moved to Kotzebue, he inherited the previous directorâs effort to serve traditional foods more often. When he reached out to a USDA representative in the Lower 48 to discern where things stood, he was met with surpriseâshe was not accustomed to contact from above the Arctic Circle, where agriculture and livestock, the USDAâs focus, are virtually nonexistent. To be eligible for federal reimbursement dollars, wild game animals, she told him, would require the same pre- and postmortem inspection as domesticated animals. A pre-mortem inspection for wild caribou, moose, musk oxen, seals, and whales is, of course, impossible. (As Kreil put it, theyâre ânot going to just stand there for the USDA inspector to stareâ at them.) And besides, selling wild game meat is illegal anyway, so receiving federal reimbursement for such food would be akin to its illegal purchase and therefore impossible.
Traditional Inupiat foodsâand indeed all local foods in the Arcticâare necessarily wild. But USDA guidelines apply chiefly to domesticated produce. In addition, Inupiat dishes violate the USDAâs nutritional standards. The particular Arctic environment of northwestern Alaska shaped a unique native cuisine of wild foods high in meat and animal fat and virtually devoid of fruits and vegetables. High-fat foods like whale blubber and seal oil, though once essential for surviving Arctic winters, exceed recommendations for fat intake as taught by modern medical dogma. And serving such foods raw, a favorite Inupiat custom, is totally out of the question for federal standards. Despite its stunning natural bounty, as far as the USDA was concerned, northern Alaska is a food desert.
Kotzebue was not the only town in Alaska experiencing this fight, though. Kreil soon found an ally in Ted Mala, an internal medicine physician, who had been pushing for a rule change at his Anchorage hospital before Kreilâs arrival. Like nursing homes, federally funded hospitals and schools also receive reimbursement only by serving USDA-approved foods and meeting nutrition standards.
A tall hulking figure with a gentle voice, Mala had noticed his elderly patients frequently refusing hospital food but heartily eating traditional dishes brought in by relatives. He treated one native teenage girl with depression and suicidal thoughts who had been transferred to Anchorage from her remote village and, at first, refused to speak to psychiatrists. Once under Malaâs care at Anchorageâs native hospital, the flagship facility of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, she began eating traditional foods and opened up. âAfter a while they couldnât get her to stop talking,â Mala said. âImagineâa child flown out of her village against her will to the big city, locked up in a hospital and given tasteless food she wasnât used to.â He still attributes her improvement to being in a place where âpeople were talking her own language and eating her own foods.â
Mala has numerous stories pointing to the important role traditional foods have played in his patientsâ health, yet, he griped, âthese foods practically had to be smuggled into the hospital like illicit contraband.â He especially recognized their value for patients suffering from mental health issues, a rampant epidemic among Alaska Native young adults.
Malaâs experience is anecdotal, but evidence is accumulating to support his conviction. The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention began encouraging consumption of traditional foods in 2008 as a way to promote health and prevent obesity and diabetes among Native Americans. With the shift away from physically demanding subsistence lifestyles and toward foods mostly purchased in grocery stores, health problems that were once rare have become common among native peoples. Obesity rates in Alaska soared more than 60 percent from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, accompanied by rising rates of obesity-related diseases like diabetes. The medical profession increasingly sees traditional foods as part of the solution.
Mala was raised in Buckland, a tiny road-less village that sits one hour by motorboat upriver from Kotzebue. (His father, Ray Mala, was Hollywoodâs first native movie star.) After finishing medical school, Ted Mala became the first Alaskan Native physician to practice medicine in his home state. He has become a leading proponent of blending native traditions with modern conceptions of health.
In 2009, Mala began attending annual White House Tribal Nations Conferences where tribal representatives gathered to raise issues and engage with specific federal agencies. Each year he represented the Inupiat Eskimo and pushed the USDA about serving traditional foods to hospitalized patients. His argument rested on cultural and health groundsâmore traditional foods would improve health and strengthen native cultureâbut also on economic ones. In a region with few job opportunities but plentiful fish and game, serving wild foods could help the local economy, he argued. Instead of spending federal money on shipping costly produce, all of which comes from further south, funds could instead support local hunters and fishermen to provide food to the townâs nursing home, hospital, and school.
But his annual argument yielded little progress. So, in 2011, Mala tried a different route: He approached Alaskaâs Sen. Mark Begich to discuss legislative fixes. Begich was familiar with the issueâit was a topic of regular complaint from his constituents. After a rural outreach trip to Kotzebue in 2012, during which nursing home staff pressed him on it, he tasked his assistant Andrea Sanders with drafting legislation that he would present on the U.S. Senate floor.
Sanders, a native of Alaskaâs Yukon River delta region, began researching the issue. In early 2013, she began drafting a bill that would allow traditional foods to be served in public facilities primarily serving native people while also encouraging increased consumption of traditional foods for health reasons. She borrowed wording from Alaskaâs own state regulations on wild foods. With its frontier culture and strong tradition of living off the land, Alaskaâs law was far more lenient than federal rules on the topic of traditional and wild foods. Mala wrote letters of support, providing both medical and cultural perspectives for politicians and federal agencies.
The following year, in early 2014, the U.S. Congress was busy tussling over the Farm Bill, a massive piece of legislation setting federal policy for agriculture and food that is renewed every five years. Using the legislation Sanders had drafted, Begich pushed for a traditional foods amendment in the Senate while Alaskaâs Don Young pushed similarly in the House of Representatives. There was plenty of debate over a Republican initiative to strip safety net legislation from the bill, but little disagreement over the traditional foods amendment. It was ultimately included in the final legislation, signed into law on Feb. 7, 2014. The amendment, titled âService of Traditional Foods in Public Facilities,â was a major victory for Alaska and for natives throughout the country. In the words of Daniel Consenstein, a USDA representative in Anchorage, the 2014 Farm Bill was âthe first time that the U.S. Congress officially recognized that the traditional foods of Native Americans are a real part of the American food system. And an important part.â
On a drizzly day in July 2015, more than a year after the passage of the updated Farm Bill, a crowd gathered around a small trailer in Kotzebue for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. A leading member of the Inupiat community spoke as raindrops splotched his notes; miles away across the tundra, rain quenched wildfires that had filled the town with smoke in recent days. The speaker stood before a row of Inupiat elders sitting in wheelchairs, themselves surrounded by dozens of locals who had come out in support. Mala stood among the crowd and received a special mention in the brief speech.
The ribbon was cut to inaugurate the Siglauq Center, Alaskaâs first official processing center for native foods. The trailer, a repurposed woodworking shop, would provide space and tools to process wild game and fish served in Kotzebueâs nursing home. The crowd toured the trailer, admiring its gleaming steel counters topped with saws and grinders and its two large walk-in freezers for storage.
The construction of the Siglauq Center helped the nursing home clear the remaining legal hurdles posed by USDA regulation by providing a sanctioned place to process the food. After the approval of the Farm Bill, Kreil had called the USDA administrator once again to discuss the âExotic Animalsâ provision of the Farm Bill. The provision lists common game species requiring proper USDA inspection, including deer, elk, and bison, but says nothing about two deer family members most relevant to northwestern Alaskaâcaribou and moose. The USDA administrator, admitting that since moose and caribou were not mentioned in the provision they may not require USDA oversight after all, agreed to defer to Alaskaâs state agencies for approving these wild game meats.
Kreil had also triumphed by gaining approval from CMS for his new menu. On a conference call that included representatives of Alaskaâs Department of Environmental Conservation and federal representatives of CMS, Kreil argued that a CMS memo released in September 2011 allowed nursing homes to serve produce from their own gardens. In the Arctic, Kreil argued, âthe tundra is our garden,â and so its wild bounty was the equivalent of garden vegetables in the Lower 48. DEC granted Siglauq a permit, and CMS agreed to maintain federal reimbursements for the wild foods processed there.
By summer 2016 Inupiat foods were officially on the menu in Kotzebueâs nursing homeâprepared in its kitchen, served on its plates, and counted toward the nutritional goals of its residents. Cyrus Harris, a local Inupiat man, worked as the nursing homeâs official hunter and fisherman, perhaps the only job description of its kind in the country. Harris grew up along the shores and rivers of northwestern Alaska and cherishes the job that allows him to continue traditional subsistence activities and to serve his respected elders.
Despite the achievements already won, the battle over traditional foods continues. One food not yet included or approved in the Farm Bill is seal oil. A Seal Oil Task Force formed in late 2016 with Kreil and a team of dieticians pushing for its inclusion among permitted traditional foods. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin are currently analyzing seal oil samples for botulism, a potential danger of improper production and a primary concern of health agencies. If safe production can be ensured, Alaskaâs DEC will allow it to join the menu.
During a recent lunch at Kotzebueâs nursing home, Bernhardt sat at one of the tables, slurping loudly at a bowl of caribou soup. Behind her, against the dining room wall, stood a large glass case displaying traditional Inupiat clothing and hunting implementsâclothing that she grew up wearing that is now confined to display. Her generation may be the last to have truly grown up in the Arctic wild, and the threat posed by rising sea levels to Alaskaâs coastal villages may speed the already hastened demise of Inupiat culture.
But on that day, her complaint was simpler: She thought her own caribou soup recipe was better.

Thatâs why this year, weâre folding Ignite into the official MozCon schedule so everyone can benefit from the tales shared and enjoy a fun five-minute break between SEO talks.
Wondering about what topics will be covered at Ignite this year?:
The Ninja Kit to NOT Get Sick While Traveling by Dana Weber at Seer Interactive
My Everest: How 10 Years of Chasing Tornadoes Came Down to One Moment by Tom Romero at Uncommon Goods
Baseball Made Me a Better Engineer by Tom Layson at Moz
Trailblazer: How Reading One Book Changed My Life for Good by Lina Soliman at OSUWMC
Drag Queen Warlocks, Skateboarding Sorcerers, & Other Folks by Jay Ricciardi at Tableau
Voice Dialogue Therapy: Listening to the Voices Inside Your Head by Kayla Walker at Distilled
Weâre opening up Tuesday night as your chance to explore the Emerald City. Weâll have a travel team onsite at the conference on Tuesday to help you and your friends plan an exciting Seattle adventure. Perhaps youâve met a fantastic group of like-minded folks at a Birds of a Feather lunch table and would love to talk featured snippets over fresh fish nâ chips at the Pike Place Market. Maybe youâve always wanted to catch the view at the top of the Space Needle (recently renovated and reopened to provide even better views!). Or perhaps a quiet sunset picnic overlooking the water at Gasworks Park seems like the perfect way to relax after a long day of learning and networking. Regardless of whatever floats your boat, we encourage you to plan local meetups, invite your newfound and long-standing friends, and forge a few irreplaceable Seattle memories.
Wondering what there is to do, drink, eat, and see in Seattle?
Well, who better to ask than us Seattleites? Using tons of real suggestions from real Mozzers, weâve put together a Google Map you can use to guide your exploration outside the confines of the event venue â check it out below!
Seattleâs got more to offer than we can name â get out there and discover the renowned Emerald City quirks and quaintness weâre famous for!
Travel options:
Seattleâs got a pretty solid transit system that can get you where you need to go, whether youâre traveling by bus or train. The city also has its share of rideshare services, as well as taxis, bikes, ferries, and water taxis, depending on where you're headed.
Public transportation
King County Metro Trip Planner: Traverse the city by bus! You can also download an app to get real-time bus info (I like the One Bus Away app, developed here in Seattle by University of Washington grads)
Light Rail: Connecting the north end to the south, the Light Rail can move you across Seattle quickly (and even drop you off right at SeaTac for your flight home!)
Water taxis and ferries can float you right across the Sound (and offer a lovely view while theyâre at it)
A Transit Go ticket or ORCA card will happily power your public transit excursions
Bikeshare programs: As you wander the city, you may notice brightly colored bicycles patiently awaiting riders on the sidewalks. That rider could be you! If youâre feeling athletic, take advantage of the cityâs bikeshare programs and see Seattle on two wheels.
Rideshares and taxis
Uber & Lyft can get you where you need to go
Moovn is a Seattle startup rideshare company
Two taxi services, Seattle Yellow Cab and Orange Cab, allow for online booking via their apps (or you can call âem the old-fashioned way!)

A little about me and why Iâm starting this blog
Iâm 26 years old, I live in NSW Australia, and I began my medical transition when I was 17 years old. I was lucky enough to get the green light to start hormones when I was 16, however sporting commitments prevented me from doing so until I was 17. I was incredibly lucky to have a psychiatrist who believed that I was able to give informed consent, despite being the youngest person he had ever treated, which I will be eternally grateful for. Itâs much understanding that at that time (2008/2009), you were required to attend the Family Court to be granted permission to do this. I donât know how I got around it, but Iâm happy I did. I had chest reconstruction surgery with Dr Megan Hassall in Sydney in 2010, a few months after I turned 18. I had double incision WITHOUT nipple grafts. At the time of consultation in late 2009, this was the only procedure Dr Hassall offered. Between my consultation and surgery date, this changed, and I was given the option on surgery day to keep my nipples. I followed through with my original decision and had them removed. I do not regret this choice and I am very happy with my decision. I had my nipples reconstructed 10 months later, in addition to having a revision. I have not had my areolas tattoed at this stage, and likely never will. I often toy with the idea of getting them, but honestly have no issue with the way that they currently are. I am incredibly happy with my results and choice to see Dr Hassall - you would be pressed to find incisions (without tooting my own horn) that have healed as nicely as mine have. This is a testament to not only her level of skill, but also my aftercare. I know there are many people out there who have their opinion on Dr Hassall, but I wouldnât change my decision if I had the opportunity have surgery again, and highly recommend her. I had a ful lapro hysterectomy with Dr Jospeh Elbeaini in Liverpool/Campbell town in 2010. I specifically chose him as I knew another guy had seen him for their hysto, and that he had not requested to do an exam prior. This may not be important to some people, however this was extremely important to me. I donât feel it necessary to go into the full details of my experience with having a hysterectomy here, however if you do wish to know more, feel free to message me. I had no issues with seeing him, he was respectful and understanding, 99% of nursing staff were amazing and made what was a rather traumatic experience a lot more bearable. I have essentially lived the last 8 years of my life comfortably not having to disclose my medical history to anyone I meet, unless it has been a sexual partner and in few very instances, medical professionals. I do not agree that this is considered âliving stealthâ, as that suggests that I am hiding something. I am simply living my life the best way that I can and if my medical history has no impact or relevance to the interaction and relationships I build with someone, it is information that they donât need to know. I spent years and years convincing myself that I could put lower surgery off in hope that one day a better, more advanced option would become available. That one day soon the option of a transplant would be available for all men requiring penis surgery, not just cismen. I grabbled with the loss of my forearm and additionally scarring and what that would mean about disclosure and who and how I interact with people. Iâve spent countless morning having panic attacks while trying to get dressed, being late for work because I havenât been able to stop crying, avoiding public bathrooms, etc. all in the hope that one day my waiting would pay off. A few months ago, in the midst of my lowkey crippling depression pertaining to my genital configuration, I came to the realisation that all the things I had been hoping and waiting for are very unlikely to become apparent within the timeframe that I need lower surgery. Around the same time, I learned that a friend of mine had not long had surgery in USA and that there was now a surgeon operating in Australia - Dr Hans Goossen, who is based in Queensland. Following a morning meltdown, I made the decision to bite the bullet and book a consult, which is now 3 weeks away. Between then and now, I have spent countless hours on the internet trying to find out whatever I can about Dr Hans Goossen and his work, but thereâs very little aside from one blog (https://mytransitionftm.wordpress.com), and a few recounts of consults. So I guess my primary reason for creating this blog is hopefully being able to build on the little information that is available about what options are available for men looking to have lower surgery in Australia - something that previously only appeared to be something that was achieved by going abroad. Within the last week, I have also come across Dr David Caminer, who is based in Sydney. I sent through an email enquiry, which I received a very prompt reply to, stating that Dr Caminer is very experienced with performing phalloplasty on transmen. I am yet to book a consult, however I will likely organise that within the next week or so. For personal reasons, I am only interested in having a phalloplasty performed. I am uninterested in anyoneâs opinion on the appearance of phalloplasty vs. metoidioplasty. That is not the purpose of this blog and I am well and truly past that point in my decision making. I hope that this can become a resource for other men and I will endeavour to update it as frequently and as informatively as possible.Â

Today has been a day of magic.
I woke feeling very tired, having worked four of the last five days. (Including the shift where I stayed until after 10pm to watch the OLT after setting up CRRT and handing off to Gian.) Still, off to FIT I went because we must keep going. Sean worked my calves and glutes hard. Harder than I would have pushed myself, of course. There was a moment where I could have thrown up. All the blood being pulled from my gut to feed the lower half of my body, much more than half of all my muscle combined. (Just like my patient from the other day....except she had a calcified SMA and much more excruciating GI problems.) Knowing that leg day would stress my system more and leave me very sweaty, I brought clothes to change into so I could get to the library straight from the gym. Forgot a bra. Dammit. I ran over to TJMaxx just around the corner and found what is actually a really nice bra that fits well....score. Anyway, new bra on and protein smoothie (from my gym) in hand, I make my way to my community service obligation. Again, very tired. Extremely worn. Cannot hide it from my face. Really wanted to just eat a good meal and sleep. But I went because we must keep going. I got absorbed in my work for 3 hours. The last passed not too slowly. I got to enjoy a few moments of the empty, ecstatically quiet library while the doors were still closed to the public and the staff was in a meeting in their break room. And apparently Iâve been finding an exponentially greater number of books, etc. on their missing list than they ever do. âA lot of those were on hold for customers.â I savored the knowledge that I was helping people outside of the hospital. 2pm. Done. Time for solid food. Man am I tired....
I decide to finally see what Central Market was all about. It was a fucking madhouse. 3/10, would recommend for the aesthetic. Can get just as good pre-made protein for much less elsewhere but their salads looked good as hell. I get me a wad of a turkey pesto sandwich with red peppers on sourdough, some of the damn suâsh Iâd been craving, and some cinnamon raisin oatmeal bites Iâve had in our breakroom before or at Mohammadâs or something. So good. I snap a pic of a BEAUTIFUL collection of big blooming roses*. They even had a faint scent. Store flowers never do these days. Or maybe they never did. Okay, okay, time to go now. Gotta get back and get on all this studying now that weâre to my days off....
I get home. I had a thought of âweâre on the right trackâ or âweâre balanced and we keep perseveringâ something like that. I was weary but dutiful. This is my life. I have to do this all so that I can prove I am good enough for med school my next go around.
I do my dishes, which had been sitting in the sink uncomfortably long. So, so tired. Iâll relax in a bath for an hour and then get into studying. I debate which CBD bath bomb to try. I was contemplating strength of the product and scent mixtures with my Lush stash. I decided on a 100mg Powermint from Bath By Bex with half a Bling Crosby. I almost didnât choose that special combo.
In the bath I am analyzing my bodyâs reaction to the CBD, trying to tell if my first time was just placebo effect. Yeah, itâs doing something. (Maybe more placebo.) I had my book--The Art of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo--on the rug and was intending to finish the last 30 pages. But I picked up my phone. Checked the notifications. Refreshed my email. Another from Theresa Silva. Iâm accepted to UTMB.
I cry. My throat tightens. I choke. I hyperventilate. I LOSE MY FUCKING SHIT, OK. Middle fingers to everyone who didnât support me. Bliss to me. I did it.
I called Mom. Then Dad. Dad was so giddy about it. I could hear him smiling through the phone; he may even have had a few tears in his eyes. Mom was more professional about it, but she was in clinic. (As she was hanging up the phone I could hear her start to say, âMy daughter....â Surprised, happy tone.)
I had believed so strongly since I didnât get match that I was going to go through the whole thing again. MCAT, essays, application, dogging people for letters, figuring out how to answer questions in the right way, interviews all over the country this time. Another year older. Itâll be okay. This is another year of money in the bank. Another year of dayshift experience and seeing how the attendings round on patients. But those damn residents were getting to me. So much doubt, not so much in myself but in the path I wanted. I think that hurt more than the self-doubt did. It took away my reason for living. But we must keep going. And Iâll try one more time even though Iâm losing soul-steam for this. Maybe I can have adventures in the PNW as a travel nurse until I settle for CRNA or AGACNP.
It wasnât until I was listening to Fall Out Boy that it sank in and I started believing it. If I can live through this, I can do anything. FUCK YEAH. Cloud 9 starting pouring through me as I stepped outside to run some errands to âYouthâ by Glass Animals. Sunshine and smiles.
Fly Feel your mother at your side Don't you know you got my eyes I'll make you fly You'll be happy all the time I know you can make it right
I felt complete. Iâm a future doctor. I walked around knowing that I have begun the rest of my life. The pieces fit. The only things that will change are my age and expertise. I am who I want to be and I will do what I want to do. I am made for this and I am actualizing my destiny. I am beginning what I have wanted to start for so long. This thing I have been wishing and working so hard for is now mine. I am me.
Later I realized that bubble bar had the note I sent to myself about med school. I had forgotten about it when I ran the bath. Oh, the magic. And at Lush? (Of course I flipping ended up at Lush.) They gave me Rosie*. (ASIDE FROM BEING INCREDIBLY SWEET AND KIND AND GENEROUS AND AMAZING) So meta. So fucking meta. The stars align, folks.
I was always looking for all of this connection and symbolism in a relationship. A magical, ethereal soulmate. Nah. Itâs me. Itâs in me. Itâs all me.

*I am a physician anesthesiologist who has suffered from chronic pain for several years. I have seen many doctors who have not been able to put a complete picture together of my various pain issues. I feel so fortunate that my internist sent me to see Dr. Attaman. He is so thorough in taking a complete medical history, doing a thorough physical exam, and ordering appropriate diagnostic tests to aid him in evaluating a patientâs problems. His bedside manner is excellent. He is compassionate and takes time to explain everything. He asks the patient if he/she understands. He is excellent at injections. I have gotten so much relief already. Unfortunately, many physicians today seem to have lost the art of the practice of medicine. The true meaning of the Hippocratic Oath seems to be disappearing. That is why Dr. Attaman is such a gem and a find for any patient with chronic pain issues. He is kind as well as clinically excellent. I would say he is the best physician I have ever had take care of me.* -Doctor N.B.
*Iâm a physician and wanted to write a review as a patient of Dr. Attamanâs this past year. I had been having lower back and sacral pain for about 10 years but due to a busy schedule had never gotten it checked out. I knew it wasnât life threatening and that I didnât need surgery. But just wanted to finally address the pain in as noninvasive means as possible. I was trained in the MD track (as opposed to Dr. Attamanâs DO track) and know the limitations of training in my field. We are not taught osteopathic manipulation, and I think the DO training in the musculoskeletal system is in general, stronger. I did see an orthopedic doctor who told me I didnât need surgery, but could not offer much in the way of diagnosis or treatment. So I specifically sought out Dr. Attamanâs expertise because of his DO background and further training in anesthesiology and pain management. I wanted someone who was capable of doing osteopathic manipulation, but also aware of the care needed in doing a safe manipulation. I brought my medical records and recent films, and he diagnosed and treated me the same day. I have never had an osteopathic manipulation, but about 75% of my pain was addressed with that first treatment. I like that his treatment options are varied, from physical therapy and massage, up to to injections. I was finally able to go to physical therapy because he was able to diagnose my issue. I canât promise that everyone will have the same results as I did, but I was very pleased with my overall experience with Dr. Attaman. He took the time to make an accurate diagnosis, used precautions by reviewing films, explained to me what he thought the issue was, offered effective and diverse treatment options, and was very professional. His office is very pleasant and staff are also very friendly and extremely helpful. I have since moved from Seattle but wanted to post this because my experience was so positive. Best of luck to Dr. Attaman, his staff, and all his patients.* -Doctor R.D.
*It was a Pain Management Doctor who transitioned me to the right people and for the right diagnosis ⌠not the Neurologist, not the Spine Rehabilitation Specialist, not my PCP. However, when I was referred to a Pain doc I assumed everyone had just given up on me and thought I should just be medicated, so I went out of my way to find one who just said no to drugs. Dr. Attaman in Seattle WA fit that bill, and regardless of where things stand with me today â I will forever be grateful to him.* -Anonymous
*Dr. Attaman is the first one who identified my issue and got me on track for treatment.* -Anonymous
*Dr Attaman was the 6th doctor that I saw, over a period of 3 years, for a chronic pain problem and the first to give me a correct dagnosis and to give me some pain relief. He takes the time to understand the problem and does not use a PA as a filter.* -R.K.
*Dr. Attaman was the best doctor Iâve had (and I have had a great amount) He was very attentve to my needs, and truly listened to me. He looked at different possible solutions and made me part of the decision process giving me a choice. When It was time to have a procedure done he was able to calm me down and reassure me (which is hard to do) He did what was best for me in that situation. I am very satisified with him as a doctor, and a person who is compassionate and truly cares about his patients. If there is anything else I need, or call for another doctor in his field, I will only see him.* -T.G.
*Dr. Attaman is such a blessing. He takes the time to review the history of what the problem is, prior treatments, and is very thorough and precise in identifying the âpain generatorsâ. He then takes the time to map out a specific plan to help and answers all questions. He also does every procedure himself. Even if he is teaching someone else, he does the procedure himself. He is very respectful and mindful of my dignity and treats me as a partner in my healthcare and talks to me not at me. My pain has markedly improved with his help. I have referred several of my coworkers to him. His office does have a policy of not âinvitingâ patients back who miss an appointment without proper notification. I think this is because he is very much sought after and if youâre scheduled for an appointment and donât show then youâve taken up space from someone else who could use his help. However, they email and/or call to remind you of the appointment so really, be respectful and responsible and either cancel or show up. I recommend him whole-heartedly! Wonderful doctor to have on your side! -C.W.
*I have suffered from chronic neck and shoulder pain for over 10 years. Tried all sort of doctors, chiropractors, acupuncture, everything you can imagine. One day, my primary care physician recommended Dr. Attaman; so, I decided to give it a shot. It has been amazing the change since I started seeing Dr. Attaman. After explaining all my symptoms, all different type of treatments and medicines I tried in the past, he suggested that could be related to a not very common condition involving nerve constriction by my muscles, he ordered several MRIs and X-rays to verify the condition. I was impressed by the level of detail he went through to make sure this was the root of my problems. I am in the middle of my treatment and so far itâs been night and day. I cannot think of anybody else more qualified and knowledgeable than Dr. Attaman to treat these type of issues.* -A.G.
*Heâs just fantastic. Straight to the point, good bedside manner, compassionate, intelligent, explains things well and a real go-getter! Iâve recommended him to friends, coworkers & acquaintances dozens of times.* -Anonymous
*Has changed my life. I have been out of a wheelchair for 7 months and love every minute of it.* -S.H.
*I visited Dr Attaman because a friend had seen a physiatrist for similar neck/back problems. He offered a more useful diagnosis than the doctors I had previously seen for my condition (persistent migraines). And the solutions he advised, physical therapy and a nerve rhizotomy, have done far more to help my pain issues than the many drugs Iâve been prescribed in the past.* -Anonymous
*Dr. Attaman is one of the most amazing Drâs I have encountered in years. He is very attentive to my pain and was very attentive in offering solutions he thought he may be able to provide. He did not b.s. me in any manner, talk down to me and/or make me feel unwelcome into his practice. He is truly a godsend and although we have not finished treatments he has already made me feel 50% better (3/6 procedures so far). I trust him and will continue down which ever path he feels is neccessary to help me regain my life. Truly amazing man and I am very grateful to have found him. Also his office staff is one of the most amazing I have ever encountered. Smart attentive and spot on. I can not even imagine a better experience!* -Anonymous

*I worked many years as a Registered Nurse. I ruptured a disc, had surgery, went back to work for a year and then ruptured three more discs and have had disabling back problems including pain and spasms ever since. I saw Dr. Attaman after seeing several other doctors and being told that my options were exhausted. I went to Dr. Attaman seeking out PRP, but after an evaluation he informed me that I was a better candidate for a different procedure (one that he did not make nearly as much money for performing as it was covered by insurance and not a cash pay). I had the procedure preformed and had good results. Although I remain disabled, my quality of life has improved! As a nurse, I have had the opportunity to work with many physicians and know that physicians are just people and there are all kinds. I can truly say that I trust Dr. Attaman, I believe he can help people with chronic pain and that he is exceptional at what he does. He is respectful and caring. I would recommend him to my family members.* -Anonymous
*I observed Jason Attaman treat my wife over several months during 2009 for pain management after two major surgeries and was very impressed with his expertise, medical knowledge, professionalism and patient care and caring. He listens to his patients, answers questions in clear and understanding way, and provides the attention and care they need. He truly loves his patients and cares about them as individuals too. With a nurse and 3 doctors in our family, I know and understand what good doctors are and can do. In my book, Jason is clearly in a league of his own. You will be very happy to have him as your doctor, as indicated by his repeat business, referrals and patients willing to pay for his services out of their own pockets, even when they have medical coverage under their regular medical coverage plans. Simply put, Jason is the best of the best. giving his patients the care and caring they deserve, need and want. My wifeâs recovery was significantly helped by Jasonâs care and pain management techniques and suggestions. She was very impressed by Jason and recommends him 100% plus with absolutely no reservations to others in need. You shall benefit from his expertise, knowledge and hands-on approach. His sense of humor and people skills will inspire confidence and make you feel better mentally as well as physically.* -L.S.
*I have been dealing with neck/shoulder pain for over 2 years. I have been to two surgeons, acupuncture, a massage therapist, a chiropractor, and other pain management specialist. I wanted to find someone who could diagnose my issue and finally be on the path to a pain free life! Dr. Attaman was fabulous and I would recommend him to anyone who is suffering from pain! Prior to going to him I got an MRI, two nerve root blocks in my C5, a trigger point injection, cortisone shots, the list goes on! What was found in my MRI was a small bone spur on my C5 and I was told by the surgeons they could remove it and fuse my C5 to my C6 (ACDF surgery). I felt I was much to young and kept trying to find someone who was willing to be less invasive but yet still be free of pain. They said some people have bone spurs and donât feel pain so I wasnât willing to have major surgery that may not fix my issue.Dr. Attaman looked at everything and really listened to where my pain was and heard everything I had done to try and fix myself. I really thought at this point everyone thought I was crazy for being in pain and yet nothing was working. I didnât want to take pills every day or have icy/hot patches, ice packs, etc.. just to be able to work and live my life. After two trials to numb my nerves (C5-C7), the pain finally went away and then he burned my nerves on the third time. I was in a bit of pain afterwards but I could tell it was a different pain. A surgery pain and not the pain I had before. I have to say 3 weeks later and I am pain free! There is still a little sensitivity but nothing compared to what I have been dealing with since 2010. I am so happy and feel like myself again! I have been dealing with so much pain for far too long and I wish I had found him two years ago. Thank you Dr. Attaman for really diagnosing me and listening to me the patient!* -R.R.
*I first went to Dr. Attaman for a pain management consultation, because I was having very severe pain in my lower back as a result of disk degeneration problems. I had already seen my primary care doctor and two other pain specialists. I decided to get one additional visit for another opinion, particularly with Dr. Attaman because I read and found out about possible procedures that could be done instead of surgery or cortosone injections. I was impressed with Dr. Attaman from the very first visit. He took the time to fully question me and to review all the medical records I had requested be sent to him. He understood my emotional upset related to the pain that was so intense that I could not sleep and it made it very difficult for me to do my work. He stated that my type of problem could best be helped by a procedure that would actually burn the nerves in that area of the back so that the pain could be reduced significantly. The process was arduous, including three procedures on each side of my lower back, the first two (on each side) being diagnostic probes to locate the actual source of the pain. Once that was accomplished, I then had the main procedure done on each side. Over a period of weeks from the time the procedure was done, my pain level went from a 10 down to a near 0 on both sides of my back. Needless to say, I am very grateful to this experienced and skillful doctor, and would recommend anyone with a similar back problem to consult with him to see if what he offers could truly make a difference in quality of life. Again, it happened for me. The procedures are costly, but were mostly covered by insurance. I am so very pleased with Dr. Attaman and the results I have gotten. I am back to exercising and feeling better than I have felt in years.* -K.E.
*After taking my daughter to see a number of specialists including neurologists, chiropractic, accupuncture and physical therapy, Dr. Attaman diagnosed the original problem stemming from a car accident and explained why some of the other treatments hadnât worked and why she was in so much pain. Prescribing a new course of treatment, which has been successful, has made all the difference in my teens life as well as validating that âit wasnât just in her headâ!! Can not say enough good things about Dr. Attaman as well as his awesome staff.* -A.C
*Dr. Attaman is about working with the individual needs of his clients and helping them return to function. If you are interested in multi-modal recovery and wish to make gains to get back to living your life, then this is the practice for you to get in touch with.* -P.R.
*I have observed Jason Attaman treat my wife for a year and am very impressed with his expertise, medical knowledge, professionalism and patient care and caring. You will be very happy to have him as your doctor, as indicated by his repeat business, referrals and patients willing to pay for his services out of their own pockets, even when they have medical coverage under their regular medical coverage plans. Simply put, Jason is the best of the best. giving his patients the care and caring they deserve, need and want.* -A.B.
*I have observed Jason Attaman treat my wife for a year and am very impressed with his expertise, medical knowledge, professionalism and patient care and caring. *Dr. Attaman clearly invests in and cares about his patients. He listens attentively to concerns, demonstrates a sincere interest in progress and effectiveness of treatments, and is open minded enough to consider as well as offer alternative/natural approaches. Overall I am very happy. I have been seeing Dr. Attaman for the past few weeks for the treatment of muscular related issues. After diagnosis, he offered a range of treatment options including both traditional Osteopathic medicine (soft tissue manipulation) as well as western approaches (injections). I opted for the Osteopathic approach as it is more or less natural and side effect free. The results have been excellent. I noticed an immediate improvement after my first session and itâs been a constant progression towards resolution since.
After meeting with Dr. Attaman a few times, I commented that I really appreciated the personal attention and approach he takes towards medicine (spending *real* time with patients â not a rushed 15 minutes, listening to and dialoging about concerns, discussing my holistic well being). His response? âYeah, I am trying to run a different type of practice here.â I hope his âdifferentâ type of practice becomes âthe normâ, we could sure use more medical professionals like Dr. Attaman.* -S.B.
*I have dealt with chronic lower back pain for years, worsening within the past 5 years. Having two young kids and wanting a better quality of life, this was not an option for me. After PT from three separate providers, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and pilates I still had pain. I was told from two doctors and a back surgeon that the only way I could relieve my back pain was to have surgery. I was not happy with that answer, so I did a search and found Dr. Attaman. I am SO HAPPY I did. Not only am I pain free, but I can sleep at night, I can walk without limping, and more importantly â keep up with my kids! I feel so fortunate to have found Dr. Attaman and have told my primary about him (along with my entire family and friends). It is so refreshing to have a doctor who truly listens, provides honest advice and suggestions, and has an office assistant who is so organized and quick to return phone calls and e-mail. Even though I always see people in his waiting room, he makes me feel as if I am his only patient.* -W.S.
*I have been seeing Dr Attaman for a couple of months now. Conservative treatment did not work for me and I thought I was going to be in pain the rest of my life. I was referred to doctor Attaman for a second opinion and since the first visit with him I feel that I have hope and will get healthy again. Dr Attaman is very knowledgeable, explains every procedure well, answers all my questions, and always listens. I like that he is confident and professional. I highly recommend Dr Attaman, as he cares for his patients a great deal and has a great team of nurses as well.* -A.V.
*I have been a patient of Dr.Attamanâs for about a year now. After suffering for many years I went from Doctor to Doctor only to be told that for the most part I would have to just live with the pain and go on, as the years went on my mobility continued to slip. Dr Attaman has been a great help to me and is sincere in his desire to make things better. He has done wonders with my low back & leg pain, I used to think I needed an increase of pain meds, but now, The low levels I am on are working I am feeling better than I have in so many years and am lookiing forward to a great summer filled with a much higher level of activity. He is a GREAT Doctor!* -M.H.
*I have been a patient of Dr. Attamanâs since November of 2010. Due to a fall down my stairs I was severely injured. I was numb in both of my buttocks and lower back. I also was in extreme pain. Dr. Attaman performed procedures on my back which relieved my lower back pain. He was sensitive to my individual needs and explained the procedures thoroughly. He answered any questions my husband and I had. I have had lower back pain since my early 20âs. I now have no lower back and are able resume my normal activities. Dr. Attaman has been a wonderful doctor. I feel better than I ever have and now have a very optimistic outlook in regards to a full recovery from my accident. I would enthusiastically recommend him as a Doctor. If you need help and are in pain he is the Doctor to see. He also is just a very nice and caring person. His staff is great, Aubrey handled all the appointments and insurance paperwork. She worked with us to make appointments and procedures as convenient as possible.* -D.D.
*Dr Attaman has helped me a great deal with my back pain. I am very active and it was weighing me down. I had too much planned this summer to be downâŚ.and now I wont be!!! Yayyy!!!!* -W.O.
*I have had ACNES (nerve entrapment syndrome) for 4.5 years and was referred to Dr Attaman by my Pain Specialist @ University of Washington to try a procedure called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). After extensive research on Dr Arttaman and the PRP i was extremely excited to give this a try and be pain free. In the past 4 years i have seen COUNTLESS doctors⌠and of them there are only 3 that i would want to treat me and Dr Attaman is one of those 3. His goal is to help me get rid of my pain and he is doing everything that he can to do this. He is KIND and i truly feel that he cares about ME and not just my disease. Each procedure that i have done he has explained to me and to my family so that we can understand how it will fit in the puzzle to fight my pain. I feel that we are a team together to beat the ACNES and i am not just a number as i have felt @ other clinics. I highly recommend Dr Attman and his staff â Aubrey and Consuela â they are THE BEST!! Oh â and it has only been 8 weeks since starting with Dr Attaman and my pain is already at least 50% better and we are still ealry in the recovery process of the PRP and Injections. SO HAPPY!* -T.W.
*After many years of back pain, I finally got a GOOD dr who sent me to see Dr Attaman. I had tried everything from chiropractors to physical therapy and everything in between. After seeing Dr Attaman, he diagnosed me with arthritis of my lower back. I have since had 2 rhizotomyâs on both sides of my lower back and am mostly pain free. I am able to hike and do all the things I could do before, but was nearly immobile after doing them. Now after I hike, I can drive home and get right outta the car and walk into the houseâŚ.whereas before, after getting home from a hike, I could barely get outta the car, was unable to bring any of my gear into the house, all I could do was come in and lay flat on the floor for a while. It was awful!!! Now things are fantastic!!! I have climbed Mt St Helens this summer and climbed to Camp Muir on Rainier!!! Thanks Dr Attaman!!! :-)* -W.H.
*After spending several years trying to find some relief with organizations like Stanford and UCSF, Dr Attaman seems like a miracle worker. Taking the time to actually read the health records and a willingness to try looking at a situation from a different perspective brought about a quick resolution⌠I would recommend this physician to anyone experiencing chronic pain.* -H.K.
*I was referred to Doctor Attaman by a doctor in another specialty. The other doctor told me that Doctor Attaman is good at handling really tough cases. Well, thatâs me. For the last 6 years Iâve had trouble just sitting in a chair or driving my car, due to a bad tailbone problem, Prior to seeing him I had chiropractic care, physical therapy and seen a number of competent and caring doctors, going through procedures at three different hospitals, with no change in my condition. Since being treated by him, Iâm virtually pain free, in fact Iâm sitting comfortably as I write this.* -D.H.
*AMAZING results!!! I am pain free for the first time in years!!! Both my knees done with the PRP treatment and I can walk, run upstairs!!! Anyone with pain problems should see Dr. Attaman!!! I am an Aleut (Alaska Native) from Sand Point, Alaska* -S.W.
*I just got home from an initial evaluation with Dr. Attaman. His office was so accommodating and I was put on a cancellation list after getting my paperwork in and was called the same week! I have a very long and very complex case involving at least 3 nerves and my piriformis and he is the first Dr. to be able to put all my tests together and form a plan. We start next week and I am thrilled he could put it all together and understands I have many different issues going on at the same time and he is willing to see me through them. I have hope of being in less or pain free after 10 years of debilitating pain. So let the journey begin! If you have a complex pain problem see this Dr! He may even save me from one more back surgery that I was planning. Thank you Dr. A!* -M.G.
*Dr. Attaman worked wonders for me. I had a series of muscles spasms occur throughout almost 14 years. The spasms would occur when I shivered from the cold, or when I stretched my upper torso too far. Years later, the spasms progressed. Then the spasms triggered after exercise. With the procedure done by Jason G Attaman, not only can I get stretch my upper torso, and exercise, I HAVE MY GOLF SWING BACK! The weather outside was very chilly this winter, and I may have shivered in the cold, and from then on (after procedure), no acute muscle spasms. The spasms used to stop me in my tracks. When the muscle spams triggered, I couldnât move, couldnât breathe, and couldnât talk because the pain was so excruciating. Now, I am pain-free and pain medication-free and steroid-free. I do not need medication of any sort, because the muscle spasms stopped 99.9%. I may have had a little spasm after wards three or four times, BUT they were short-lived (5 seconds long) and never an episode like before (lasted for hours). I lost nearly 20 pounds since the procedure (I went back to exercise), and my bad cholesterol went way down and my good cholesterol went up very high. Finally, want to emphasize, I GOT MY GOLF SWING BACK!!!!!!!* -R.B.
*I had seen another pain specialist and had been disappointed. I found Dr. Attaman on the internet while looking for another pain specialist. My first appointment with Dr. Attaman was enlightening to say the least. He laid out for me a program of treatment that seemed to be ideal for my problem. I had pain in both hips that had at times been so bad that I was unable to get out of bed. Dr. Attamanâs program consisted of shots in both sacral joints and following that the parting of the nerve going to the area of pain so that the pain ceased. I would recommend Dr. Attaman to anyone who is in chronic pain. He is personable and very capable.* -A.B.
*I first saw Dr. Attaman in March 2011 after I had been âfiredâ by another Dr. who sent me on my way with a prescription for a tens unit and a reference to see a psychiatrist. It was a hopeless feeling with no viable solution to deal with my chronic pain. I did my research and consulted with several people in the health care field and Dr. Attaman was recommended. My pain stemmed from a combination of issues: arthritis, rotator cuff and a failed disc. Over the past year we have picked off all but the disc. He performed an investigational procedure a few months ago and I am enjoying, on average, about a 60 percent reduction in disc pain. Some days more than others. But for the most part, I can do some light yard work and enjoy some of the activities I used to do without âpayingâ for it for weeks after. I have come a long way in the past 18 months and I am better today than I was 2 years ago. Dr. Attaman has treated me with respect and understanding and has not been dismissive of my condition. I highly recommend him.* -S.C.
*Dr. Attaman is a wonder! He is an innovative, long term thinking, & caring pain professional. I would highly recommend him. His staff is also competent with a well run office.* -J.F.
*I feel very BLESSED to have found Dr. Attaman. He has much compassion and listens very carefully to all you have to say. His office staff is also very friendly and helpful. Both my husband and I have benefited greatly from his pain management skills.* -N.H.
*I found Dr. Attaman by searching out pain specialists that offer more variety in the types of treatment they provide. I saw Dr. Attaman many times over a period of several months in which he skillfully provided non-steroid treatments to both sides of my lower back. I have had disk degeneration problems that have caused me such high levels of pain that it was very difficult for me to work and even to sleep. His treatments have reduced the level of pain on both sides of my back from a 9 or 10 to a near zero. I am very grateful to this highly skilled, intelligent, communicative, caring, good-bedside-mannered doctor who has given me a signficantly higher quality of life. I am thankful to have found him, and would not hesitate to return to his care if my body is in need of help in the future.* -K.E.
Wonderful doctor to have on your side!* -C.W.
*I was referred by my primary physician to Dr. Attaman after a serious fall. I had arthritis in my lower back, a herniated disc and complete numbness in both of my buttocks and partial lower back and leg. I was in terrible pain. Dr. Attaman performed a rhizotomy on both sides of my lower back. The pain is gone and has not returned this was done in 2011. Because of the arthritis I had suffered lower back pain since my early twenties, after wards no lower back pain. He gave me several steroid injections for the disc to reduce inflammation and I regained some feeling in my buttocks. After these injections the pain subsided in that area. In 2012 I herniated another disc and did require surgery, which I believe will be fine after physical therapy. Dr. Attaman recommended my surgeon, Dr. Jayashree Srinivasan who is the best. After having been a patient at his office for almost 2 years now, I can honestly say he is one of the most caring and compassionate Doctors I have ever seen. His staff was accommodating to our schedule. Dr. Attaman made my husband and I feel as though he was focused on both of us as his patients and would help find the best solutions to our health problems. He is certified in the latest procedures available and will always give the extra effort to ensure his patients are given the best care possible. I recommend Dr. Attaman to anyone who is suffering from pain and needs to find a doctor who can help them.* -D.D.
*I have seen Dr. Attaman over the past year. He has helped me with my shoulder and back pain. He is always professional and caring regarding my needs and expectations. His staff is always pleasant and competent. I would probably had to have surgery if not for Dr. Attaman. I would highly recommend his services to anyone who wants to seek out alternative pain management. Thank you Dr. Attaman for all you do. You are very appreciated.* -J.C.
*Dr. Attaman is a great doctor. I have had the best experiences and results. The most important thing he has given me is âhopeâ, something I have not had in the long time Iâve been battling chronic pain. He has been able to help me in a way no other doctor has in the short time I have been seeing him. I appreciate his professionalism and skill; he is really fabulous at what he does. He is kind, knowledgeable, understanding, talented, impressive, remarkable, and terrific; all the things you could ever want in a physician. I highly recommended him and will continue to do so.* -D.W.
*My wife has had long term back pain that felt like her back was on fire. After telling our old Primary Care Physician, she was sent to a pain specialist to see if they could help her. After about 6 appointments with this specialist she still had the same back pain as if it was on fire. After we got a new Primary Care Physician, she sent us to Dr. Attaman to see if he could help. After talking to her, he had determined that she had problems in her hips and her lower back. After doing the procedures on her hips, it was the first time in years that she was able to sleep on her side. Dr. Attaman then started working on her back. After injecting Lidocaine in the nerves in her back to insure that he had the correct nerves, he did the first what he called a Nerve Melt in her right side, she has had no pain and now he has started the left side. I hope that she has the same results as the first. She has use less pain pills and we hope that she will not need them. During the procedures, Dr. Attaman explained everything that he was doing. I was with my wife when she had one of the procedures on her hip and Dr. Attaman explained to me what he was doing and showed me how he guided the needle into the area that he was going to inject the pain medication into. He is one of the first Doctor that I have met over the years that has explained every step he was going to do and he really cares about his patients. I hope when I am not on the road so much, that my Primary Care Physician will send me to him to help with the pain from an on the job injury to my lower back so I donât have to take so many pain pills. I would recommend Dr. Attaman to anyone that has any type of pain, because he is one of the best in the business.* -E.J.
*I had been in pain as long as I can remember. Iâve seen many doctors who were unwilling to look for a cause, instead prescribing pain medicine or simply telling me I needed physical therapy, which I was in too much pain to do. Dr. Attaman reviewed my history and was confident he could help me. I was highly skeptical. After a few relatively simple treatments, I am pain free!! Pain free!! My entire life has changed because prior to seeking Dr. Aâs help, my life consisted of nothing but trying to get out of pain. Now I feel as if someone has handed me a new life. I am more than grateful to Dr. A and his staff. And while we strongly disagree on a specific topic, Dr. A always treated me with kindness and respect. I would (and do) recommend him to anyone suffering through pain. There is a light.* -B.R.
*I went to Dr. Attaman because my tendons and ligaments were stretched from an accident that occured more than 40 years ago. The result is that my ulna bone in my left wrist slides out unexpectedly from time to time, sending me in agonizing pain to the emergency room where I have to be anesthestized before they put it back in its socket. I hear that Dr. Attaman did a fairly new therapy where he injects your own red platelets into the affected area and that, in turn, can help tighten the loose ligaments and tendons. I had the procedure done in January of this year. Thereâs no telling if everything has tightened enough to prevent another dislocation but, for now, all is well. The reason Iâm writing this review is that Dr. Attaman and his staff were very friendly, compassionate, and accomodating. They tried very hard to make me feel comfortable and answer my many questions. I would definitely recommend Dr. Attaman to anyone who wanted to have the procedure I did, or who needed assistance with pain management of any type.* -L.P.
*Dr. Attaman is committed to reducing and/or elimiinating pain. He will stay with you until he finds the right answer. I believe he uses the most recent procedures developed to address pain. I used orthopedic docs and physical therapists for years and my pain continued. I am grateful that he has helped me consierably and that he will stay with me as liong as I need him. An added plus â he does not prescribe tons of pain pills.* -S.L.
*I chose Dr. Attaman for 2 reasons â #1 Reviews. Not here, which is why iâm Yelping first, but elsewhere â reviews were stellar. #2 Iâm not doing any more drugs. If I went to a pain specialist and they pulled out the RX pad I might have set it on fire. (ok not really, maybe just a page). His website and credentials made me assume that he doesnât like to do drugs either. When I called to make an appointment, I was asked if my primary would write RXâs for me if needed â I flippinâ LOVE this concept â enough with the 5 different docâs writing 5 different RXâs with no follow-up or monitoring. Dr. Attaman actually reads the forms you fill out. (These days, any Doctor who does that is worth at least 4 stars). But I didnât just give him my 15 page form file ⌠I gave him another 15 pages of test results and Doctor notes for 5 months worth of visits. During my exam, Dr. Attaman mentioned a diagnosis that was given by which medical facility â and not only was he right, but he recalled something that happened way back in February. After reading 30 pages of whatthehellisthisgirlsproblem? I didnât need someone to hold my hand and tell me everything is going to be okay, I needed someone to look at the facts and make firm decisions based on their knowledge and the data. Dr. Attaman did all of the above, he even apologized for all of the dbags before him who did none of it, and as much as I claim to not need âwarm and fuzzyâ â there arenât words to describe how NICE it was for someone to take the time to acknowledge my mismanaged care. When I left, I took 3 business cards. 1 for me, 1 for my primary Doc, and 1 for my PT. Maybe Doctorâs just need our help in building their COIâs, less dbag referrals and more healthy happy patients!* -K.M.

12.10.18 | Specs-free
I just had the most life changing experience after having my lasik eye surgery done at Shinagawa. Still overwhelmed by the fact that I can see everything so perfectly clear and am literally in awe of the result. It just feels surreal to finally be able to see the world crystal clear again as I seem to have forgotten the feeling of having a normal vision. It feels amazing to wake up and see everything a lot clearer than before without putting my glasses on, which is something I never thought would happen one day. Itâs been one hell of a struggle not being able to see clearly and recognize faces from afar that I had to wear prescription glasses all the time since my eyes got pretty much dependent on it. I never opted to wear contacts cos itâs way too much of a hassle that Iâd rather have my specs on for convenience. When I learned about Lasik, there was this little hope sprung within me. At first, I was coupled with the fear of having long term post-surgery effects but the thought of being able to get rid of this blury vision excites me more. Had to watch vlogs and read some reviews to have an overview of how the surgery will be like. Took me a couple of months to finally do it as I had to prepare myself physically, emotionally and financially, and I am just sooo happy that I made one of the best decisions in my life. After undergoing a comprehensive eye screening last month, I have been cleared for lasik and decided to have my surgery done after my Cambodia trip. The surgery itself only lasted for about 10-15 mins. Yes, it was that fast and I am sooo amazed! I was actually hoping to do just the Z-lasik but the screening results did not qualify me for such procedure. They had to perform an Ultra lasik surgery which is recommended for extreme cases such as having a higher degree of astigmatism. It was a quick and painless procedure although there was a slight discomfort during the suction part but itâs tolerable. I felt the effect instantly as my eyes started to clear up gradually a day after the surgery. I now have an HD vision which is even better than the normal 20/20. I literally cried out of joy and pain (just because tears wonât stop falling when the anaesthesia started to wear off few hours after the surgery). The first 3 hours after surgery was hell though. I could barely open my eyes cos my eyelids were too heavy and tears were nonstop. Had to keep my eyes closed during the entire ride back home cos it was just too painful and my vision was kinda hazy. But overall, I would say itâs worth it.
I couldnât be more grateful to Shinagawa esp. to Dr. Dinglasan and his team for taking care of me during the whole procedure. To the doctors, nurses and the very accommodating staff of Shinagawa Makati, thank you for making this possible and saving me from this world of blur. I'm now totally specs-free and it just feels great to have my crystal clear vision back after almost a decade of living with poor eyesight. I can finally ditch my glasses and enjoy clarity of a lifetime. Hereâs to brighter days ahead! â¨

While MozCon Ignite has always been a much-loved and highly anticipated event, weâve also listened closely to your feedback about wanting more time to network on your own, plan client dinners, go on outings with your team, and in general just catch your breath â without missing a thing.

The delight is in the details
MozCon is literally brimming with things to do and ways to support our attendees when they need it. Aside from our hosted events and three daysâ worth of talks, weâve got things to fill in the cracks and make sure your MozCon experience is everything youâve ever wanted from a conference.
Photobooth with Roger: Admit it â you see that cute, googly-eyed robot face and you just want to hug it forever. At MozCon, you can do just that â and memorialize the moment with a picture at the photobooth! Rogerâs a busy bot, but his photobooth schedule will be posted so you can plan your hugs accordingly.
Ping pong play sesh: Don your sweat bands and knee-high socks and keep your paddle arm limber! During breaks, weâll have ping pong tables available to burn some excess energy and invite a little casual competition.
The world map of MozCon: Ever play pin the tail on the donkey? Well, this is sort of like that, but the donkey is a world map and (thankfully) thereâs no blindfold. Youâll place a pin from wherever in the world you traveled from. Itâs amazing to see how far some folks come for the conference!
Local snacks galore: Starbucks, Piroshky Piroshky, Ellenos Yogurt, and Top Pot Donuts will happily make themselves acquainted with your tastebuds! Carefully chosen from local Seattle businesses, our snacks will definitely please your local taste pallet and, if past feedback is to be believed, possibly tempt you to move here.
Stay charged: Pining for power? Panicking at that battery level of 15% at 10am? Find our charging sofas to fuel up your mobile device.
MozCon is for everyone
We want marketers of all stripes to feel comfortable and supported at our conference. Being âfor everyoneâ means weâre working hard to make MozCon more accessible in many different ways. The Washington State Convention Center is fully ADA compliant, as are our other networking event venues. But itâs important for us to get even better, and we welcome your feedback and ideas.
Here are a few of the ways weâve worked to make MozCon a welcoming event for everyone:
A ramp on the stage
Live closed captioning of the main event
Walkways for traffic flow
Menus featuring options or special meals (that actually taste good) for dietary restrictions
A nursing room
Gender-neutral bathroom options
Lots of signage
T-shirts that fit different body types
Visible staff to help make everyoneâs experience the best possible
A proud partnership with 50/50 Pledge, furthering our commitment to better representation of women on stage
Strict enforcement of our Code of Conduct and TAGFEE
Bespoke city exploration â Get to know Seattle!
In years past, Tuesday nights were reserved for our MozCon Ignite event, where brave folks from myriad backgrounds would share stories in lighting-fast Ignite-style talks of five minutes each â the only rule being it canât be about marketing!
While MozCon Ignite has always been a much-loved and highly anticipated event, weâve also listened closely to your feedback about wanting more time to network on your own, plan client dinners, go on outings with your team, and in general just catch your breath â without missing a thing.

For those watching on the sidelines, scroll along and youâll find a treasure trove of fun Seattle ideas and resources for future cons or trips you might make to this fair city by the sea.
And if youâve been waffling on whether or not to take the plunge (to attend the conference â I wouldnât recommend plunging into the Puget Sound, itâs quite cold), there may still be time:
Register for MozCon!

Are you ready to rock MozCon?!
If youâre already MozCon-bound come this July, make sure to download the app (must be on mobile) and join our Facebook group to maximize your networking opportunities, get to know fellow attendees, and stay up-to-date on conference news and activities.

Are you ready to rock MozCon?!
If youâre already MozCon-bound come this July, make sure to download the app (must be on mobile) and join our Facebook group to maximize your networking opportunities, get to know fellow attendees, and stay up-to-date on conference news and activities.
If youâre thinking about grabbing a ticket last-minute, we still have a few left:
Grab a ticket while you can
And whether youâre going to be large, in charge, and live at the conference or just following along at home and eagerly waiting the video release, follow along with the #MozCon hashtag on Twitter to indulge in the juicy tidbits and takeaways attendees will undoubtedly share.
