2 supreme court cases that every single usamerican NEEDS to familiarize themselves with immediately are Castle Rock v Gonzalez and Hernandez v Mesa in which the supreme court essentially gives a green light to child murder as a result of state violence (or at the very least, violent incompetence)

White Widow #1 by Sarah Gailey review.
Tumblr media
We can all agree that we all fell in love with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova in Black Widow (2021) and for many people, including me, she was our first introduction to the character. And as an absolute, completely sane and normal person, I said to myself “Why not read all of her appearances in the comics ?”, and I did.
Surprisingly, both characters are incredibly different. Nonetheless, both interesting and amazing on their own. While I agree that MCU Yelena has more depth and perhaps, more personality, comics Yelena is still a good character. The way she has been written has been very disturbing, even sick and twisted sometimes, like Pale Little Spider (2002) or Black Widow (2001). Sometimes messy, and I suggest everybody forget her Adaptoid phase or anything that ever happened in Secret Avengers (2013) for her sake. But still, you don't erase almost 25 years of a character's development, even if it has been inconsistent, just because you felt like it.
In the comics, Yelena has always been in Natasha’s shadow and has never had her own original story. In Widowmakers: Red Guardians and Yelena Belova (2020) and Winter Guard (2021), we had a glimpse of hope to finally see her character evolve despite Red Guardian’s appearance, a character linked to Natasha. When a limited-serie on White Widow, a character that hasn’t been properly developed and deserved to, was announced, I fucking cheered man. But then I remembered the curse of a character’s MCUfication, because Marvel never does anything right. And oh boy was I not prepared for what was coming…
I don’t even know where to begin. It all felt like a giant fanfiction written by someone who has only ever seen the movie and didn’t even bother to check on other writers’ previous work on Yelena’s character.

White Widow (2023) #1.
There are lots of things wrong in this picture. First and second panel, where does the needle come from ? After I checked and double checked just in case, there were NO records of Yelena being abducted or forced to do anything she has done in her life. She chose to join the Red Room. She chose to be a Black Widow and she was determined to outperform Natasha’s results during tests. She even had a whole mental breakdown about it.
Tumblr media
Pale Little Spider (2002) #1
Now, let’s try to find excuses for the use of the needle… The first one would be the Red Room using the Black Widow’s serum they used on the 28th original Widows, during Natasha’s era. But our good ol' Grigor Ivanovich just ruined this theory.
Tumblr media
Black Widow (2004) #4
Excuse number two, the Red Room used some sort of a mind-control serum which wouldn’t make any sense too for all of the reasons I said above.
Now the third panel… I’m at a loss for words. Where the fuck does it comes from. Where the FUCK was it during Secret Empire (2017) ? Yelena wasn’t even there anymore, bitch was dead. We didn’t see her until Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye and The Winter Soldier (2018), until she was brought back to life WITH Natasha. Also, she has a real family and they’re even mentioned in Black Widow (2001), Yelena calls her mother and her aunt Olga is mentioned.

White Widow (2023) #1
Now, the board... It looks like it has been made for a MCU tie-in more than anything.
Although I'd like to adress one thing that has been said on Twitter, about the "Hate nationalism → Imperialist invasion". There is a difference between nationalism and patriotism. Being a nationalist is being way too extreme about your country when being a patriot is to love your country, its people and its culture while also being critical about the way its being led.
Now, we know when she was young, Yelena was kind of extreme. In Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her (2005) #1, she admitted she was willing to sacrifice herself for the Motherland more than once. During her Black Widow era, she was naive and had a blind love for Russia which was her biggest weakness.
Tumblr media
Black Widow (2001) #3
But as her character continued to evolve and grow through her appearences, Yelena is far more reasonable now. She considers herself like a true patriot and she has always been proud of being Russian. In conclusion, this board's section is not as bad as people make it out to be since Yelena went from being an extreme nationalist to a patriot.
Tumblr media
Widowmakers: Red Guardian and Yelena Belova (2020)
I know many of you like Kate Bishop and Yelena’s friendship due to their duo in Hawkeye, I too, am a big fan of them… But unfortunately, they only interacted once in the comics. And they didn’t even talk to each other. That’s why mentioning Kate Bishop in her like section is purely fan service and although it is a nice nod to the series, it doesn’t make any sense here. Yelena has interacted with Clint Barton way more than the better Hawkeye, which is sad.
Tumblr media
Black Widow (2020) #10
I'd like to come back in the hate section just a second to say I don't know why she hates the Infinity Gauntlet so much that's it's written in caps. It's 100% a nod to the MCU again but here it also doesn't make sense. But again, a lot of things doesn't in this issue.
I wont bother talking about her attitude and how she looks like a teenager swallowing vodka directly from a bottle when she used to be classy and extra with manners. I wont bother talking about her new suit's design which sucks more than her previous one. This is not the Yelena Belova we used to know, it's a complete new character made to match her MCU self and please a small public who mostly watch the movies/series.
I saw a lot of people celebrating Yelena's changes to match Yelena's Florence Pugh more. I know the character has become more famous because of Flo', but this is actually terrible and wasn't handled correctly.
We hoped for a more mature story, maybe a little darker than usual. A new start for her character, to follow her path in making the world a better place and get out of Natasha’s shadow for good. With a little backstory too, nothing much. The bare minimum. Instead, we had a copycat of her MCU counterpart and it is just heartbreaking to see a character I loved so much being destroyed like that.
I could go on and on about why this piece of junk is just a bunch of nonsense and laziness and how Sarah Gailey’s just went for the easiest writing ever… But I will stop there. I just hope she knows that us, fan of comics Yelena, are fucking disappointed. Everything that made her character so special and dear to us, disappeared in one issue. The damage is surreal.
It’s only four issues long so I will continue to read it until the end, but I expect nothing from it anymore. I hope the writer won’t destroy Yelena’s character any further, because things can only go downhill from here.

if you legitimately believe in the concept of porn addiction you're a reactionary btw.
edit: i'm turning reblogs off on this post because the people taking umbrage with it are either 1. reactionaries proving my point 2. people who refuse to read any of the sources provided in the relevant reblog 3. people who don't understand what actually defines addiction vs. compulsive behavior or 4. people who don't understand that what society dictates is abnormal sexual behavior isn't an objective measure of fucking anything anyway and that should be obvious because being gay used to be in the dsm!
read this and fuck off:
Another consequence of medicalizing addiction is that addiction as a medical condition can expand in scope to include an ever-larger number of cases (e.g., Reith 2004; Barker and Galardi 2015). Though early US sexologists, such as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, studied what they labeled “sexual disorders,” they did not use an addiction framework (Irvine 2005 [1990]). Instead, the emphasis on sexual addictions, including addiction to pornography, stems from the addiction movements related to substance abuse (Reay, Attwood, and Gooder 2015). In the last half century, this movement has begun to identify and treat a wide range of addictions related to various behavioral pleasures, such as eating, gambling, and sex (Travis 2010; Netherland 2012). Founded in 1977 by a longtime Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) member, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) was the first established sex addiction support group. In the 1990s, the addiction movement began targeting pornography addiction, which they connected to both sex and Internet addictions (Irvine 2005 [1990]; Voros 2009). Conservative Christian leaders and organizations, which have long opposed pornography on moral grounds, championed the addiction framework in late twentieth-century messages about pornography’s harms (Thomas 2013; Perry 2019; Burke and Haltom 2020). Radical feminists, who have maintained their opposition to pornography since the 1970s (Whittier 2018), remain in coalition with religious anti-pornography groups but have not taken up the language of addiction like their conservative Christian counterparts. Instead, evangelicals and feminists find common motivation on the basis of freedom from so-called sexual exploitation, language that, according to Bernstein (2018), reflects the rise of the neoliberal state and militarized humanitarian efforts.
[...]
Compared to newspaper articles and state resolutions, scientific articles were the least likely to support an addiction framework, and we found less support among neuro-physiological research than psycho-social studies. Seventy-six percent of psycho-social articles that referenced pornography addiction supported an addiction framework, compared to 55 percent of neuro-physiological articles. Psycho-social articles outnumbered neuro-physiological articles by nearly seven to one and were better positioned to support an addiction framework by using self-reports of perceived addiction or addiction-like behavior. Neurophysiological articles that did not include self-reported measures used criteria to define and measure addiction neuro-physiologically, and these noted common limitations. First, for those using cross-sectional designs, researchers could not determine whether the differences they observed preceded or followed pornography consumption. Second, as an article published in 2015 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience describes, neurological researchers who work under the assumption that the brain responds to cue and reward differently when studying addiction (i.e., what triggers the addictive behavior and to what effect) test pornography itself as a reward behavior rather than as a cue for future reward. In other words, in the lab, participants are typically instructed that they should not masturbate while being exposed to visual sexual stimuli or pornographic material. These studies may lack construct validity measuring pornography as a reward, whereas in real-life pornography, it is most often a “cue” for some other rewards (i.e., masturbation or partnered sex).
[...]
Within our sample of neuro-physiological studies, 81.8 percent (9 of 11) included all-male samples. Though psycho-social studies that analyze gender do find differences in pornography consumption and perceived addiction for men and women, neuro-physiological studies that use all-male samples reinforce the assumption that men experience unique physiological harm as a result of pornography consumption. Neurophysiological articles are more similar than psycho-social articles to newspaper articles and state resolutions in the likelihood of exclusively emphasizing men as the consumers of pornography. This serves to reinforce a medicalized model of men’s biological predisposition to become addicted to pornography and thus perpetuates the stereotype that men have innate and uncontrollable sexual urges. Women, who may be literally excluded from a neuro-physiological study’s sample, are then figuratively understood to lack these same sexual desires.
[...]
Our findings reveal that references to pornography as addictive emerged in scientific articles, newspapers, and political documents in the twenty-first century and grew most substantially in the last decade. Most of these sources implicitly or explicitly reproduce the pornography addiction framework that they reference, but scientific studies are more likely than newspaper articles or state resolutions to explicitly challenge or critique a pornography addiction framework. Broad cultural understandings of addiction position neuro-physiological studies as the best equipped to validate pornography addiction since addiction is understood as a “brain disease” (Vrecko 2010a; Netherland 2011), yet these studies are the least likely in our sample to make broad conclusions that pornography is addictive in ways that are similar to drugs, alcohol, or gambling. Most newspaper articles that reference pornography addiction take for granted the concept and therefore implicitly support it, yet the articles most often mention public figures who are not neuroscientists of addiction and are instead activists, politicians, religious figures, and therapists. All state resolutions in our sample explicitly support pornography addiction as a concept and rely on biomedical language to construct pornography as a threat not only to individual consumers but also to broader groups and communities. This reliance on biomedical language allows political actors to present a seemingly objective and factual account of the harms of pornography that are more convincing than claims about morality that may seem outdated or out of place in the political sphere (Thomas 2013; Strub 2010).
Our analysis of how arenas of public discourse construct harms associated with pornography addiction illustrates the social and political stakes of biomedicalized concepts related to sexuality. Just as sociologists of other addictions argue that the shared understanding of addiction as “biological” is made meaningful only through social situations (Keane 2002; Weinberg 2002), we find that public discourses construct pornography addiction as a social problem by articulating a wide range of harms, including direct harms to consumers and indirect harms to broader society. These discourses do more than pathologize pornography itself but also pathologize individuals and relationships that fall outside of normative definitions of gender and sexuality.

Do you have specific horror films that you personally believe are "must see" when it comes to the genre? If you have a few that you believe are "required viewing" I'd love to know what they are. You just seem like you've seen tons of horror movies and I'm still fairly new to the genre and am curious what your thoughts are!
yeah! so this list isn't necessarily my all-time favs or anything--more so like these are horror movie touchstones that are useful to watch to get a comprehensive look at the genre. i'll put a little commentary on some of them too. and stars for my personal favs in case this list is too long and overwhelming lol

FAVORITE SHOWS IN POSTERS
Well, we’re back for another installment of this tagged meme, this time for TV shows! I also stole this from/was indirectly tagged by @jcmorrigan. My taste in shows also differs a bit from my taste in movies, as I tend to like a lot of comedy shows with not as many horror ones. I’m not into shows as much as movies overall, but there are some that I am very passionate about so I picked twenty again. So, here we go for part 2, in order:
Tumblr media
1. Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend Of Korra (2005-2014)
I'm including these as one show since they take place in the same universe and tell a continuation of the same overall plot. Altogether this is probably the best piece of media to ever exist, including movies. It has so many great characters and villains especially and some of the most epic sequences, charming humor and heartwarming moments ever. I've never met a person who didn't like these shows, even people who normally don't like cartoons. My dad, who is biased against animation? He loved it. My mother? She loved it, watched it with her multiple times. My grandmother? Loved it. My ex-boyfriend? Loved it. My best friend? Loved it. I dare anyone not to, and I'm so glad it's making a resurgence since it's on Netflix for a new generation to enjoy.
Tumblr media
2. Black Butler (2008-2014)
I never was big into anime growing up and only really started watching anime when I was like 16 and above, but this is one of the exceptions because holy shit is it ever dark and epic. I'm not sure I'd really recommend it for kids, it's more of a teens and young adults kind of anime and that's probably why it's so good, because it isn't afraid to explore dark and mature topics and do it with all of the intensity and gravitas required to do said topics justice. It has lots of great characters, and the story of demons who make deals with children who have a dark side is fun to watch play out.
Tumblr media
3. Seinfeld (1989-1998)
My dad was a huge fan of this show so I watched it growing up since I was a toddler and it became a classic for me. I've watched thw hole show through at least 8 times, and I'll never stop because it never gets old or boring. It's also my only comfort show when I'm having a panic attack because of one time a few years ago when I was having a drug-induced psychosis episode and watching it calmed me down, so now it's like the opposite of a trigger and whenever I'm having an episode or something I watch it to bring me back to reality. For that reason it's more than a show to me, it's a medical treatment and I'm forever grateful to it.
Tumblr media
4. The Good Place (2016-2020)
The big four shows made my Michael Schur all made it on this post (The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office and Parks And Recreation), either in the main list of the honorable mentions, but this is my personal favorite of the four. It's so funny, quirky, relatable and basically tailor-made to suit my interests. Not only is it an entertaining and wholesome show, but I think watching it helped me come to terms with a lot of things like mortality, ethics, philosophy, religion and my relationships with other people. It gets  alot of different viewpoints across and if you're a very analytical and philosophical person like me you'll probably enjoy seeing it all play out. Not to mention, every single character is 'favorite character' material. It's rare you find a show with no filler characters in the main cast, but I genuinely can't choose who is best.
Tumblr media
5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-?)
Another of Michael Schur's shows, this one is just barely under The Good Place and to be honest it was tough to pick my favorite between the two because they're both equally funny. I know it's kind of controversial right now because of the whole law enforcement thing, but I actually think they do a good job of handling social issues in the show and remaining respectful of real-life systemic problems. As for the characters, this is another one of those shows where every single character is gold and I think that tends to be a trend among Schur's shows in general. He produces damn good comedy, and damn good characters. I can't wait to see what they bring next.
Tumblr media
6. Rick And Morty (2013-?)
This is unfortunately one of those cases of 'great show, horrible fandom' and for that reason I don't get involved in the fandom even though I love the show. It's a shame because it really is a great show, so funny and, again, such good characters. I think it's a lot more accessible than the fandom likes to claim, so I'm hoping more people will give it a chance and not get put off by the intellectual elitism of the fandom because it does have some of the most entertaining and batshit crazy episodes ever, poking fun of some of the staples of science fiction in media while also poking fun of itself the whole time. Unlike the fandom, the show doesn't take itself seriously and that's enjoyable nowadays.
Tumblr media
7. Orange Is The New Black (2013-2019)
While this show is a comedy, it is also a lot of other things and it's probably made me ugly-cry just as many times as it's made me laugh. Well, maybe not as often, but those few scenes (if you've watched the show then you know the ones I'm talking about) made me hysterically sob hard enough to be worth like fifty minor sads. But I didn't even mind because the show is just that good, and it makes you /feel/ something in a real way. Probably because of just how real it gets in terms of telling stories that happen all the time in the real world, sometimes with inevitably tragic endings. But these things do happen every day, and it's important to shine a light on that. It's not just representation for LGBTQ+ but also for POC, the neurodiverse, the poor, and many more. Give it a watch to broaden your perspective!
Tumblr media
8. Big Mouth (2017-?)
This is probably the grossest show I've ever seen but by god is it ever funny. Maybe it's because I have an immature sense of humor or something, but I love this show. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea and I don't recommend you watch this show with anyone else around because it will get awkward. I think part of its appeal to me is that everyone I talk to who likes it considers it so relatable to their lives growing up but for someone like me who grew up on the autism and asexual spectrum and who was physically an early-bloomer by years, nothing about this show is relatable to me in any way so it makes it all the more crazy and bizarre watching how the people around me must have experienced things. Did y'all really have these experiences with puberty in middle school???
Tumblr media
9. Dexter (2006-2013)
I recently heard that this show is coming back for a reboot soon and I'm so excited because this is my absolute favorite drama/thriller show, as evidenced by the fact that it's the highest one on the list so far that isn't a comedy. I love the idea of having a protagonist who is sort of a villain (or at least morally dubious), and the idea of a serial killer who only kills bad people is particularly satisfying for some reason. Maybe because he's the vigilante we all deserve and want in this unjust and evil world of modern times? Idk but the very premise of this show set it up for big things and aside from the ending I think it delivered consistently.
Tumblr media
10. Once Upon A Time (2011-2018)
This show took us on some journeys, and you can't deny that. Sure, maybe it didn't always finish what it started and didn't always end in the most satisfying way, but part of its charm is that you didn't care because the experience was just so much fun. They took characters and stories that have been told to death and somehow managed to put a unique and unexpected twist on them, and that alone is admirable. Good twists, good villains, and pretty much every cliffhanger known to man will keep you hooked on binge-watching every episode.
Tumblr media
11. RuPaul's Drag Race (2009-?)
A bit different than the other entries on my list in that it's not fiction but a reality competition show, but I couldn't leave Drag Race out because it's just so fucking iconic and perfect. Even when you disagree with the judges or can't stand a certain contestant you'll still be having a good time. It's got the personalities you love to love, the ones you love to hate, and the comedy that's completely meme-able. I mean just how much has this show contributed to pop culture and the internet? More than most of us, henny. I've watched every single season, even the international ones and all of the spinoffs. This show will probably be on for another thirty years when Ru is throwing shade from a hospital bed and I'll still be watching.
Tumblr media
12. House (2004-2012)
Some people hate on this show, and I don't get it. I love House. Yes, he's an ass. That's the point. He's supposed to be unlikeable, and that's why I like him. Maybe because I always love the rude, sarcastic, misanthropic jerkass-genius characters for some reason. And I also love procedural shows, so it's a win-win. I also work in the healthcare field so it appeals to me for that reason too, because obviously the whole premise is outlandish which is what makes it funny. Of course it's not realistic for a hospital, so just enjoy the absurdity and don't get too hung up on the details of medical accuracy and professional ethics and you'll be fine.
Tumblr media
13. The Office (2005-2013)
The third of Michael Schur's show and the last one that made the main list (sorry Parks And Rec, I love you too but there was just so many good shows to choose from and I saw you last so the nostalgia isn't as strong!) I don't think I need to hype this show up any, it's already a classic and you can't even turn around online without getting hit in the face by a dozen Office memes. You'll have to pry this show and it's relatable characters (especially Michael Scott) from my cold, dead hands.
Tumblr media
14. All Hail King Julien/The Penguins Of Madagascar (2008-2017)
Like Avatar/Korra, I also consider this as one show for the sake of this list because it also takes place in the same universe (Madagascar, specifically) and I just couldn't choose one over the other because they're both so perfect. They're funny and I love all the characters (it cut out the weaker links of the Madagascar film series and just focuses on expanding the standout side-characters like King Julien and the penguins). It also delved into some lore, particularly the first show, and even though I didn't also agree with the directions it took (you may have seen me get salty about the ending because I cared too much), I can't deny how much I love it.
Tumblr media
15. Bones (2005-2017)
One of the other scarce non-comedy shows on this list, it still has it's funny moments. It's also, like House, another procedural show that involves some medical stuff, but this time on a more scientific and forensic level which is even more interesting. It's nice to see a lead female with Asperger's, too. There's a lot of cop/law enforcement shows where they try to solve crimes, but this one is the best, and I'm saying that as a fan of CSI as well. Don't fight me on this, I'm right. Oh yes, it's corny, it's campy, it's cheesy, but I love every minute of it. Don't watch if you have a weak stomach though.
Tumblr media
16. The Simpsons (1989-?)
We all grew up with this show, don't lie. It's been around longer than most people on tumblr have even been alive. Should it have ended seasons ago? Hell yes. But that doesn't take away what the first like 20 or so seasons gave us (there's a lot of argument about when the show jumped the shark, for me it wasn't until much later than the popular consensus). The characters are amazing, but the secret to the show's longevity is that they always return to status quo and there's comfort and nostalgia in that. Bart will still be in 4th grade when you're out there pushing 90. This show is persistent. This show is eternal. This show will outlive us all.
Tumblr media
17. Ash Vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018)
Sorely underrated. This show is hilarious, gruesome and campy as hell and I love it. I don't think you necessarily have to watch the Evil Dead movies beforehand in order to get the plot of the show, although it would probably help. In my opinion this show ended way too soon and I'm hoping someday we'll get a comeback because Ash is the reluctant, self-absorbed hero we all need and it's 2020 so at this point there really might actually be a demon-zombie apocalypse and who's gonna save us then if not for the impulsive womanizer with a chainsaw for a hand?
Tumblr media
18. Malcolm In The Middle (2000-2006)
Another show I grew up with, I don't think it gets as much credit as it deserves. It has some damn funny episodes and great characters, and it did a lot of the popular sitcom tropes before they were 'cool'. Some other great sitcoms, The Middle in particular, took a lot of influence from this show and it helped pave the way for the future of sitcoms at a time when they were about to make a comeback. If you want a good show about the real experiences of growing up, this is a much more accurate representation of the highs and lows of being an awkward tween from a dysfunctional home.
Tumblr media
19. A Series Of Unfortunate Events (2017-2019)
Unlike most people I actually liked the movie version from the early 2000's, and I read the books growing up so I was excited when I saw there was a live action television adaptation of it on Netflix because I felt like they cancelled the movie franchise too soon. I was interested to see how new actors would handle the roles, and I was not disappointed. I wouldn't say I liked either portrayal of the characters better or worse, they both added their own twist to it and this show is a great and loyal adaptation to the books, probably because the author was so heavily involved. He knew just when to stick to the books and when to improve upon what he had done with the benefit of hindsight. This show is basically the books, but remastered.
Tumblr media
20. Winx Club (2004-?)
Sort of an odd one out on this list, but I really love this show even as an adult and it may surprise you to learn it is still going on and the most recent season came out last year. They take big breaks sometimes in between seasons, but it's still going strong and in multiple countries. The only thing I don't like about watching this show is all the different and inconsistent dubs since the original show is Italian and each dub only goes for a couple seasons so by the time you get used to one set of voices/names for the characters oyu have to abruptly switch to another, but it's still worth it for the beautiful animation and cool characters (especially the villains!)
Honorable Mentions:
13 Reasons Why, America's Next Top Model, American Horror Story, Arrested Development, Bates Motel, Battlestar Galactica, Black Mirror, Care Bears, Chernobyl, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Criminal, CSI, Duck Dodgers, Goosebumps, Kenny Vs. Spenny, Kim Possible, Kingdom Hospital, Lazytown, Lost, Making A Murderer, Mayday, Mindhunter, Modern Family, Monster High, Obsession: Dark Desires, Parks And Recreation, Prison Break, Project Runway, Queer As Folk, Queer Eye, Salem, Schitt's Creek, SCTV, Spongebob Squarepants, The Emperor's New School, The Good Doctor, The Haunting Of Hill House/Bly Manor, The Middle, The Pretender, The Walking Dead, The X-Files, Through The Wormhole, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Unsolved Mysteries, Yugioh

Ten Years (ch. 1)
Ch. 2 Ch. 3 Ch. 4
Request: this one
"Spencer wakes up 10 years in the future and finds himself married to his crush at work, Y/N."
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader
Content warnings: none, a couple of curses, a few light sexual references.
Notes: Ok ok I know it's 2020 but it's around 2015 in this, meaning Spencer wakes up 10 years after season one (2005). For my sake, I'm sticking to the core team for other characters (Hotch, Rossi, Emily, Morgan, JJ, and Penelope)
Tumblr media
Spencer's eyes fluttered open. The last 24 hours were a blur. He didn't know why there was a sharp pain pounding in his head or why he felt... different. All he figured was that whatever dream he was having must have been taking one hell of a toll on him. Probably a nightmare he was blocking out about the horrors he saw from work. Or the admittedly less drastic ones from his childhood. He sighed softly and shifted in bed for comfort. But that split second of peace didn't last. Terror and confusion shot through his racing mind when he saw someone's outline in his bed. His heart palpitated as he realized it was a woman sleeping beside him. Not knowing what to do, not being able to comprehend why this woman would be in his bed he tried to quietly reach for his gun for a worst case scenario but was interrupted by the soft sound of the woman waking.
"Spence? What are you doing?"
He froze. That was, without a doubt, the voice of Y/N. She'd started at the BAU a year prior and the two quickly grew close. She considered Spencer her best friend and so did he. But the difference, to his knowledge, was that he'd fallen hopelessly in love with her. How could he not? She was a kind, funny spirit who always lit up a room. She listened to him, never cutting him off or invalidating him. She could make all the worries in the world disappear. Her laughter was like heaven and her personality, as different from his as it was, mirrored his perfectly. She brought out a fun and spontaneous side not even he knew he had. Not to mention how goddamn beautiful she is. He could stare into her eyes forever. Fantasize about the lips he'd love to kiss, watch the way her hair fell and framed her face. Listen to that lovely voice. Watch the way she walked, the way her outfits so amazingly complimented her body. When she spoke, it was entrancing. How her lips moved and how her eyes sparkled. He'd never admit how many times he'd held on to a hug too long just to bathe in her presence or thought about her in more intimate ways with his right hand once he got home. Despite what Spencer has always wanted and Morgan's constant pushing, they were nothing more than friends. So why the hell is she in his bed?
"Y/N?" Panic spread and remained evident in his voice. The high pitched shrill that came out must have sounded fucking pathetic. "Wh-What are..." He couldn't finish the sentence but reached for the lamp beside the bed to get a better look at her. Knocking the lamp over, glass from the bulb flying everywhere he heaved again. Before he could process what was going on, Y/N had already turned the lamp on her side on and placed a hand in his hair, soothing him softly.
"Spence?" She prompted again. "Babe, what's wrong?"
Babe? As he got a now illuminated look at her it dawned upon him that she looked older and her hair was different. Now, she was still gorgeous but she'd definitely somehow aged a couple of years and the haircut was new. She was dressed in nothing but a pair of lace panties and one of his button downs and there were hickies trailing down on her neck. Could he have... No. He has to still be dreaming. There is absolutely no way that this is happening. He's read one too many books if he's really considering that he isn't in 2005 anymore or that he slept with Y/N. Still no clue what to do. He finally decides to ask her what the hell is going on.
"What are you doing Y/N?"
She looked up at him, baffled and worried.
"What am I doing? I'm trying to comfort my husband who woke up in a cold sweat at 4 in the morning and won't tell me a damn thing about what's going on. Did you have another nightmare? If you don't want to talk about it then just say so but I love you and I want to help."
HUSBAND? There's no way. There is no fucking way.
I love you. They'd never said those words, not even platonically. God, this isn't happening.
"What's-What's today's date?"
Y/N was still puzzled but answered the man at her side, still running her fingers through his hair and sitting beside him.
"It's the 30th love."
"Of?"
"Is this some kind of grounding thing? Why do you-"
"Please Y/N." His eyes filled with a look of clear dread, she responded. She would give anything to take away whatever pain or fear he was feeling right now.
"It's July 30th, 2015. You're here in bed with me, we finished a case yesterday and came home. Do you remember that?"
Now's his chance to figure out where he is.
"Yes... What happened after that?"
"We put a movie on and took a shower after. Of course, we didn't spend long in the shower before bringing things to the bedroom." Laughing softly at that last part, she hoped she was jogging his memory enough. But the look was still there. He mumbled to himself.
"This isn't possible."
"What was that?"
"N-Nothing. We should go back to bed." He should have a few more hours to try and figure out what was happening before having to go to work. How is it even happening? Why is it happening? When does it end? Did he really manage to marry the love of his life that... that called him "dude" and asked him for dating advice? If there was a friend zone, he was in it. Y/N snapped him out of his thoughts by pulling him to lay his head on her chest. Pushing away the terror and confusion while ignoring any sexual thoughts that arrived at the close proximity of her breasts, he stopped to enjoy the moment. She pressed a soft, warm kiss to his cheek and continued lightly massaging his scalp. Spencer started to drift back to sleep but not without wondering. How is this happening? And what happens in the morning?

hi!!! what are your favourite movies? like actually good ones but also any trashy comfort movies? is IT (2017) one of them?
Hello!! IT (2017) IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THEM oh man, thank you for this, I love talking about movies!!!! This is possibly the most difficult question you could have asked me. Apologies for how absolutely off the rails this got, I just... love movies so much lmao
I’ve said this before, but opening night of IT ch1 was the best cinema experience I’ve ever had, I’m so glad I got to see it with a fully packed audience who were all laughing and screaming together the whole way through. I’m a huge fan of... everything ch1 was doing, the 80s nostalgia, the summer-coming-of-age themes, the solid ghost train funhouse JOY of the Pennywise performance and scares, the washed-out cinematography, the tiny background details to make everything that much more eerie, the kids’ ACTING?!
Like, a lot of the time I find child actors can be really awkward and stilted to watch, but I remember leaving the cinema really impressed by JDG and Sophia Lillis in particular. I liked that they were all allowed to be little shitheads with potty mouths, it felt like a callback to 80s movies like The Lost Boys or Stand By Me. The whole thing worked to make me really care about what happened to the kids (even if I do still have issues with how they handled Mike. I understand even ch1 had limitations with juggling so many characters, but still). I saw it another 2 times in the cinema and have rewatched it at least, I dunno, 7-10 more times since then?
Add to all of that the retroactive CANON R+E baby pining subplot? I just love it, as if that wasn’t obvious by now given my Whole Blog. It’s a really special movie to me!
Anyway!! Ok, the main handful of movies I rewatch all the fucking time are:
Back to the Future, The Lost Boys, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Jaws, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Ocean’s 11, POTC 1, The Dark Knight, Inception, Die Hard, LOTR trilogy, Snatch, The Nice Guys, Logan Lucky, Mad Max Fury Road, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Tomb Raider (2018)...
Those are the easily consumable ones that I’ve seen so many times I don’t really have to concentrate or think about them, but I really love them and unfortunately often KEEP rewatching them instead of new stuff. It would take too long to go into why I love all these movies so much because I could write the same amount as I already did for ITCH1, and everyone already knows why those movies are good, so, lol.
I think I’m gonna have to subdivide and categorise this whole post because there are too many separate criteria for... goOD MOVIES, AUUHH 😩
Okay so first off, HORROR MOVIES? I’m especially in love with Re-Animator (1985) and its sequel Bride of Re-Animator, they’re such good examples of camp and batshit 80s practical effects, and also EXTREMELY funny. I’m actually just gonna post my list of my fave horror movies that I do actually keep on my phone at all times lmao. These are in no particular order:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wholeheartedly recommend every one of these. I’ve never been so scared in my life as I was watching Hereditary in the cinema, hoo boy. Mother! by Aronofsky is one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had (and I actually saw it on the same day I saw IT ch1 for the first time!! That was a fun day)
Psycho (1960) and The Fly from 1986 should also be on there but I couldn’t fit them in the screenshot.
I’m a HUGE fan of a ton of martial arts movies too, like Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Ip Man, The Raid movies, John Wick 3 is my fave of the trilogy, Drive from 1997 with Mark Dacascos is incredible, SPL 2, Ong-Bak, Operation Condor, Project A, Iron Monkey, and Zatoichi (2003) are some favourites.
My favourite Tarantino is Reservoir Dogs, fave Coen brothers are Raising Arizona, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and O Brother Where Art Thou. Love some old-timey colour correction and weird offbeat dialogue. I also love Goodfellas!!! And Donnie Brasco! And The Firm, I’m so easy for any good crime/law/gangster/heist procedural like that, especially if they’re from the 80s or 90s in a super dated way.
Fave Disney movie is Tarzan, favourite Ghibli movies are Spirited Away and Lupin III. I remember watching Spirited Away during a thunderstorm one time and it being.... god! Transcendent! Favourite Pixar movie is The Incredibles (the first one. ALSO the documentary “The Pixar Story” is great and well worth a watch, it’s very comforting for some reason) and my favourite Dreamworks movies are HTTYD1 and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron.
I tend to watch more anime movies than tv shows, so stuff like Akira, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Journey to Agartha, and my ultimate fave anime is Sword of the Stranger (2008). The climactic fight in that movie is fucking stunning and should be counted in “bests fights” lists right alongside anything live action
Also if we’re talking animated movies another hearty favourite is Rango, and a Belgian stop-motion (which at one time I considered my favourite movie ever) called Panique Au Village (2009) which is one of the funniest movies ever made imo.
As for TRASHY movies, I’m not sure if that’s the right word for how I feel about these ones but.. dumb/silly/slightly guilty pleasure movies? Ones that I feel need some kind of justification lmfao
Troy - something u must know about me is that I’m a giant slut for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so if a movie smashes historical and mythological nonsense together with fun costumes and sword fights, I’m gonna enjoy myself. Even if they should have made Achilles and Patroclus gay. Other movies in this vein are King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Immortals (2011)
Gods of Egypt - I know all the reasons this movie is whitewashed bullshit. But it was already bullshit with giant Anubis mecha and giant snakes and bad acting and ridiculous CGI and frankly I had a blast at the cinema (my friend who I forced to come with me did not have a blast. Sorry H***)
Avatar - yes, the one with the big blue people. This movie gets a lot of flack nowadays but I really do enjoy it just for the spectacle. The full CGI world technology was so new at the time and I love to wallow in the visuals and daydream about riding a cool dragon around in the jungle
George of the Jungle - I’ll defend this movie to the death ok this movie shaped me as a person, it is fucking hilarious and Brendan Fraser is the himbo to end all himbos. It’s perfect. The song Dela is perfect. I still want to write a reddie AU about it. It’s one of the best movies ever made and I’m not being ironic
Set It Up - I KNOW this is a dumb Netflix original romcom but consider this; it was funny and the leads had great chemistry. I got butterflies. I once watched it and then literally immediately set it back to the start so I could watch it again
The Brady Bunch Movie - when people talk about great satires or parodies you will see them bring up the same movies over and over again, Blazing Saddles, This Is Spinal Tap etc, but they never talk about The Brady Bunch Movie from 1995 for some reason, which they should. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and every time i watch it somehow it gets funnier
Some more general favourites that I do still love but don’t rewatch as often, and don’t wanna go into more detail about are:
Moon (2009), Crna Mačka Beli Mačor, The Sixth Sense, Parasite, The Handmaiden, Tremors, Wet Hot American Summer, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For the Wilderpeople, The Secret of My Success (I love kitschy 80s movies, is that obvious by now), The Green Mile, When Harry Met Sally, Rear Window, The Odd Couple, Breaking Away, Pan’s Labyrinth, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Eagle, Gladiator, The Artist, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, Call Me By Your Name, Master and Commander, Pacific Rim, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Legend (1985), Emma. (2020), Flash Gordon, Trolljegeren, Hross í Oss, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, WarGames, District 9, Ajeossi (2010), Tracks (2013), Sightseers, Mud (2012), Pitch Black, Four Lions, Shaun of the Dead, Starship Troopers, The Truman Show, Withnail & I....... Jesus Christ ok I need to stop
NOTABLE EXTREME FAVOURITES that I didn’t include in the regular rewatch list because they’re too heavy/not as well known/require more attention.:
Thin Red Line (1998), Badlands (1973) both dir. Terrence Malick
Malick’s brand of dreamy impressionistic filmmaking is something I find really appealing, both of these movies are gorgeous and unusual and poignant and, in the case of Thin Red Line at least, have a lot of things to say about a lot of rough subjects. I don’t totally understand all those things sometimes, but a theme with a lot of my favourite movies is that I’ll be more likely to love something long-term if it raises unanswered questions, or is surreal/esoteric etc. Plus the cinematography is incredible, and I wish there was a way to get Jim Caviezel’s narration from The Thin Red Line as an audiobook because it’s very poetic and soothing.
Let the Bullets Fly (2010) dir. Jiang Wen
This movie is WILD, it’s so much fun. It’s sprawling and intricate and epic and smart and really fucking funny, it! Has! Everything! A gang of very tolerant outlaws!! Jiang Wen’s beautiful broad chest!!! Chow Yun Fat absolutely DECIMATING the scenery, and the two of them outsmarting each other in order to gain control of a small Chinese town!!! Plus it’s long, but it packs so much nonsense and intrigue that it goes by really fast. Wow what a flick
A Field in England (2013) dir. Ben Wheatley
I know I included this in my horror list but aaaaahhh ahhhh Wheatley is one of my favourite directors (he also made Sightseers, and is directing the Tomb Raider sequel which makes me absolutely rabid.) This is a surreal black-and-white psychological horror black comedy set in the English Civil War about some deserters who may or may not meet the Devil in a field. People eat mushrooms. It’s bonkers. I love being blasted in the face with imagery that I don’t understand
Mandy (2018) dir. Panos Cosmatos
Speaking of being blasted in the face!!!!! This movie... I saw it in the cinema and I can’t even begin to explain the experience, but I’ll try. My favourite review site described it like this:
“...somewhere between a prog album cover come to life and a metal album cover come to life, and subscribes to both genre's artistic tendency towards maximalism: what it ends up being is basically naught else but two glorious hours of being pounded by bold colors...”
So, prog and metal are my two favourite genres of music. This movie opens with the quote “When I die, bury me deep, lay two speakers at my feet, put some headphones on my head and rock and roll me when I'm dead.” and then a King Crimson song, it is SURREAL to the nth degree, it’s violent and bizarre and Nic Cage forges a giant silver axe to destroy demonic bikers and there is a CHAINSAW DUEL. A galaxy swirls above a quarry. Multiple animated horror nightmare sequences. At one point a man says “you exude a cosmic darkness” and releases a live tiger. At another point Cage says, in a digitally deepened voice, “The psychotic drowns where the mystic swims. You’re drowning. I’m swimming.” and I haven’t stopped thinking about it for two years
Paper Moon (1973) dir. Peter Bogdanovich
Really fantastic movie set in the Great Depression (and also in black & white) about a conman and a little kid who may or may not be his daughter, running cons across the Midwest. It’s beautifully shot, so sharp and sweet and the progression of their dynamic is really well done because they’re played by an IRL father and daughter. Tatum O’Neal was NINE YEARS OLD and she’s so amazing in this movie she’s actually the youngest person to win a competitive category Oscar. I keep trying to get people to watch this fbdjfjdbf it’s wonderful
Alpha (2018) dir. Albert Hughes
THIS MOVIE IS A VICTIM OF BAD MARKETING ok, the trailers made it look like some twee crappy sentimental Boy And His Dog Adventure, plus it had voiceovers in American-accented english? That’s a total disservice to one of the coolest things about this film; the fact that they got a linguist to construct an entirely original Neolithic language that all the characters speak for the entire runtime. And yes, it is eventually a Boy And His Wolf adventure, but it’s COOL and fairly brutal, and it has some really incredible cinematography. The landscapes are so strange and barren and alien, you really get the sense that this is an ancient world we no longer have any connection to. And it’s also about like, the birth of dog & human companionship sooo it’s perfect.
Free Solo (2018) dir. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin
The Free Climbing Documentary. I loved climbing as a kid, I love outdoor sports, and I love movies that elicit a physical reaction in me, whether that’s horny, scared, real laughter, overwhelming shivers, or in the case of Free Solo - HORRIBLE SWEATING TENSION. Like, I knew about Alex Honnold beforehand because of this adventure film festival I go to every year and I followed him on IG so obviously I knew he lived, but the actual climb itself was torture. My hands sweat every time I see it!! It’s incredible, such a cool look into generally what the human body can do, and more specifically, why Honnold’s psychology and life means he’s so well suited to free soloing. It’s such an exercise in getting to know an individual and get invested in them, before they attempt something very potentially fatal.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) dir. Ang Lee
I can’t even talk about this. When I was around 13 I snuck downstairs to watch this on TV at 11pm in secret, and my life was forever changed. I wouldn’t be who I am if I hadn’t seen Brokeback at the age I did. I seriously can’t talk about this or I’ll write an even longer essay than this already is
God’s Own Country (2017) dir. Francis Lee
The antidote to Brokeback Mountain, I’m so glad I managed to see this one in the cinema too. It makes me cry every time, as someone who’s spent years working on a cold British farm with sheep it was very realistic, which is expected since Lee grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. I love that this movie isn’t really about being closeted, but about being so emotionally repressed and self-loathing that the main character finds it so hard to accept love. Or that he deserves to be loved. The cinnamontographies.... lordt... but also the intimacy and sex scenes are fucking searing wow who hasn’t seen this movie by now. 10 stars. 20 stars!!!
Tomboy (2011) dir. Céline Sciamma
I saw this years ago but I’ve never forgotten it, it cut so deep. It’s from the director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire and it’s about a gnc kid struggling with gender and misogyny and homophobia in a really raw, scrappy way, it reminded me very much of my own... childhood... ahh the central performance is amazing for such a young age. I haven’t seen Portrait yet but I feel like if you went nuts for that, you should definitely check this out, it’s lovely.
Donnie Darko (2001) dir. Richard Kelly
EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS MOVIE I UNDERSTAND LESS AND LESS and that’s what I love so much about it. I love surreal movies, I love time-fuckery and stuff about altered perception etc etc and Donnie Darko scratches all my itches. I wish I could find a way to figure out an IT AU for it, because I know it would work! Somehow! Plus it’s got the subdued 80s nostalgia and I found it at an age when I was really starting to explore movies and music and the soundtrack FUCKS.
Offside (2006) dir. Jafar Panahi
I wish more people knew about this!!! It’s an Iranian film about a disparate group of women and girls who are football fans and want to watch Iran’s qualifying match for the World Cup, but women aren’t allowed into the stadium, so they all get thrown into the Stadium Jail together? They don’t know each other beforehand, but it’s about their changing relationships with each other and the guards and just, their defiance alongside hearing the match from the outside and WOW it’s so lively. Great dialogue and very funny, and such a different kind of story from anything you usually see from Hollywood.
The Fall (2006) dir. Tarsem Singh
This movie... I guess it’s the ideal. This is the platonic ideal of a film for me, it has fantasy, magical realism, glorious visuals, amazing score and costumes and production design and a really interesting, heartbreaking relationship at the core of it. I don’t know why so many of my favourite films feature incredibly raw performances by child actors but this is another one, Catinca Untaru barely knew any English and improvised so much because of that, and it’s fascinating to watch! Also the dynamic with Lee Pace is one of my favourites, where a kid forms a friendship with a guardian figure who isn’t their parent, but the guardian grows to really care for them by the end. It’s like Paper Moon in that sense. What is there to even say about this movie, it’s pure magic joy tempered and countered by genuine gutwrenching emotional conflict in the real world, it’s also ABOUT old moviemaking, in a way, and it’s stunning to look at!
Mad Max Fury Road (2015) dir. George Miller
I know I included this in my most rewatched” section but it deserves its own thing. We all know why this movie is fucking incredible. I remember clutching my armrests in the cinema and feeling like my skeleton was being blasted back into the seat behind me and tbh that is the high I’m constantly chasing when I go to see any movie. What a fucking gift this film is
Théo et Hugo dans le Même Bateau (2016) dir. Olivier Ducastel, Jacques Martineau
I only found this movie last year and it became an instant favourite. Initially I was just curious because I’d never seen a movie with unsimulated sex before, but it’s so much more than the 18 minute gay sex club orgy it opens with. No, not more than, AS WELL AS. The orgy is important because this movie is so candid and frank about sex and HIV treatment in the modern day, it was eye-opening. Another thing that really got me is that I’d never seen a real-time film before. It’s literally an hour and a half in the lives of these two men, their intense connection and conversation and conflict in the middle of the night in Paris, with some really nice night photography and just!!! Wow!!! AMAZING CHEMISTRY between the actors. This is such a gem if you’re comfortable with explicit sexual content.
Ok. This is already over 3k but film is obviously one of my ridiculous passions and I can and do talk about it for hours. I’ve been reading magazines about it for years, listening to podcasts and reading review blogs and recently, watching video essays on YouTube because the whole process is so interesting to me and I want to learn more!!
Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of valuing form over narrative. The idea that story can often come second to the deeper physical experience and emotional reaction that’s created by using ALL the elements of filmmaking and not just The Story, y’know? Whether that’s editing, shot composition, colour, the sound mix, the actors, how it should all be used to heighten the emotional state the script wants you to feel. And so, I think for a few years now this approach has been influencing the types of films I really, really love.
I think I love surreality and mind-bending magical realism in films specifically because the filmmakers have to use all those different tools to convey things that can be way too metaphysical for just... a script? I’m always chasing that physical response; if a movie can make me stop thinking “I wonder what it was like to set up that shot” and instead overwhelm that suspension of disbelief, if I can be terrified or woozy or crying for whatever reason, that’s what I’m looking for. That’s why I watch so many fuckin movies, and why I’ll always remember nights like seeing IT (2017) for giving me another favourite.
Thank you again for this question, I didn’t mean to go so overboard. Also there’s no way to do a readmore on tumblr mobile so apologies to anyone’s dashboard 😬

ok you guys might not know this about me but i have a specific type of tv show that i like and that is ‘british shows from the mid 2000′s’. usually crime shows but not always, so here’s a little list of stuff you should watch (aka stuff i tell y’all to watch and you never do so you’ll hear it again. also some of these i’ve stretched the time period we’re covering and i don’t care so):
*also i appreciate that we don’t want to watch anything to do with the police in the year of our lord 2020 so i tried to give u a mixture
1. silk (2011)
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen? Maxine Peake is utterly iconic, incomparable and charismatic? She plays a working class lawyer working in London as a defence barrister. The ship and the found family elements are everything? And haunts me to this day? IT’S LITERALLY SO GOOD HELLO
2. The Fixer (2008)
YO the most underrated show??? THE SHIP! OOH BOY. So this guy gets out of prison and is hired as a ‘fixer’ in this deniable ops group that solves crimes. So like, he goes undercover and stuff like that. He lives with this young lad he was in prison with and? THEIR FRIENDSHIP IS SO PURE? I’m bitter about the ending and I still think about this show all the time
3. hustle (2004)
I’m not kidding when I say this used to be mine and my sisters FAVOURITE SHOW OK. A group of conmen (and always just like, one woman for some reason) CON ONLY BAD GUYS???????? It’s got Adrian Lester in it being super cool, Jaime Murray before she played villains, Marc Warren before he played villains. Honestly, it’s got it all. IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY OK.
4. scott and bailey (2011)
This show is sooo good. If I tell you Sally Wainwright helped write it then that speaks for itself yeah? ANYWAY FEMALE LEADS!!!! SURANNE JONES! BEING A POLICE OFFICER WHO IS A FUCKING HOT MESS!!!!! LESLEY SHARPE! basically they’re detectives who solve crimes together and they’re amazing and their boss is also a woman
5. case histories (2011)
THE BEST SOUNDTRACK I’VE EVER HEARD? JASON ISAACS BEING A HOT PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR WHO SITS AROUND LISTENING TO SAD FEMALE FOLK SINGERS AND HAVING AMAZING CHEMISTRY WITH AMANDA ABBINGTON? I MEAN HELLO?
6. wire in the blood (2002)
THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN ROBSON GREEN AND HERMIONE NORRIS HAUNTS ME TO THIS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so this profiler guy works with a female detective and THEY HAVE NO PERSONAL SPACE. It’s got some triggering shit and is the first ep suuuuper dodgey through a 2020 lens? but nostalgia baby
7. afterlife (2005)
THIS USED TO SCARE THE FUCKING EVER LIVING SHIT OUT OF ME. Basically Andrew Lincoln is this guy who doesn’t believe in mediums but then he meets this woman who can see ghosts and it’s. freaky as shit. it’s real good though. there’s a twist that has me shook 15 years on.
8. inspector lynley (2001)
So this posh police officer no one wants to work with gets paired with this working class police officer that also no one wants to work with and then they become best friends. I mean do you need anything else? I like to think they fell in love. This show lies to me and tells me Lynley keeps mooning about his girlfriend but. I know when two tv detectives are in love ok. i know.
9. blue murder (2003)
ok so Caroline Quentin gets promoted to detective and then gets a divorce. Then she has to work with this hot guy she used to know to solve crimes. And look after her kids. I mean. hello.
10. silent witness (technically 1996 but i’m on about 2004-2012)
I SPECIFICALLY MEAN S8-S15 though obviously you should watch the rest of it but. We’re talking about a specific era here. That is the most iconic era. The era of Nikki/Harry/Leo team of forensic pathologists. This is a crime show but not so much a police show because ALL the police are fucking useless (apart from that one ep feat Skip and Cat) and the pathologists literally solve the crimes AND PHYSICALLY CATCH THE KILLERS. The reason I include this is HARRY AND NIKKI WERE AND STILL ARE MY OTP!!!! SINCE I WAS LIKE 12 YEARS OLD!!!!!! I THINK ABOUT THEM ALL THE TIME. NO SHIP WILL EVER COMPARE. THE SHIP THAT GOT AWAY. THE CHEMISTY? THE BANTER? THE PURE DRAMA???? remember that time they almost got together and filmed a kiss scene that got cut :))))))))))))))) (also you can tell when people started watching this show because of what nikki era they like)
11. monarch of the glen (2000)
ARCHIE/LEXIE. A SCOTTISH CASTLE. THE RIGHTEOUS FASHIONS OF THE 2000′S. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED. So this guy becomes Laird of a genuine Scottish stately home. His family is fucking insane. HE FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE HOUSEKEEPER!!!!!!!!!!!!! i gotta finish this show cos its so cute

So... how did this happen?
So... I’m aiming to write a little blog post every week leading up to Geoffrey’s 70th birthday. Hopefully I can find lots of stuff to talk about. They won’t be long posts, or possibly even coherent, but I want to just share some of my love for this guy this year. Though inadvertent, he has proved to be an artistic muse for me over the past few months, during covid, furlough and all the other ups-and-downs of 2020, and his work helped draw me out of a dark place I hadn’t realised I’d been in for many years. Past memories of my fan days really helped as I recalled the days of old when us “Rushies” had a tight-knit fan group, and thought of all the films we watched, the meet-ups we had - I’m still pals with so many of you! GR was a great source of inspiration to me in my early twenties, and was also exceptionally kind and generous to so many of us; I feel so fortunate to have been part of something so special, and both reliving and rekindling this fan-love has made me so much happier in recent times.
For this initial written blog post in my countdown to his b-day, I thought I would just recount how I became a GR fan. Like many things, it was just one part of a chain of events. I think it’s fair to say it’s because of Christopher Eccleston and “Doctor Who”. After the first series of the (what was then) new “Doctor Who” finished in summer 2005, and it was clear ninth Doctor actor Christopher Eccleston wasn’t coming back, I looked for other sources of Eccleston’s work to get over the despair of losing him after just one season; I’d thoroughly loved him as the ninth Doctor and I couldn’t bear the thought that he wasn’t coming back for more.
A Live Journal pal of mine mentioned “Elizabeth” at some point, the 1998 film in which Eccleston plays the Duke of Norfolk; I think my friend said something alone the lines of he was “half expecting Rose to jump out from somewhere” whilst he watched it. Now I enjoyed watching historical dramas, and I needed an Eccleston fix, so I went out and bought “Elizabeth” and watched it. Yes, Eccleston was good in it, though very cold and austere, but what I came away with were two other questions which had little to do with Eccleston: 1) who was that Francis Walsingham in real history? and 2) who the devil was that Geoffrey Rush who played Walsingham?
Now, if you have read Terry Pratchett, you’ll be familiar with the concept of the “Trousers of Time”. Dear reader, watching “Elizabeth” was when I toppled down an alternate leg. That movie, still probably one of my absolute fave films, gave me two-fold new obsessions: both reading about the real Francis Walsingham (who, no, wasn’t quite the sexy assassin of the 1998 movie, but is still insanely interesting) and watching Geoffrey Rush work his magic.
My interest garnered, I think I went initially to Wikipedia to look up both Walsingham and Rush. And blow me, I realised that Rush was also in “Pirates of the Caribbean” which was on my DVD rack. I hadn’t even realised it was the same actor! ^^; Barbossa and Walsingham aren’t exactly alike. After I’d re-watched him in PotC with a renewed appreciation, it was then a case of going through his filmography and picking out further films in which to ogle him: I think I went for “Quills” after PotC and “Elizabeth”, and Christ, once you’ve seen “Quills” there’s no going back. I was hooked. I fucking adored him.
If I’m honest, I rarely fixate on individual actors - I can count only two actors in my lifetime I’ve truly fixated on, and they are Geoffrey Rush and, when I was very young, probably only 17 years old, I fixated on Christopher Lee. I have of course liked other actors, had crushes, but Rush and Lee remain the ones where I’ve obsessively sought out their work as far as humanly possible and haven’t been able to let them go. I have also been really lucky and met each of them twice, though Rush went above and beyond anything I expected when it came to leaving me with memories to last a lifetime; Lee was of course of a different generation and an entirely different type of artist, from a different era, so it’s unfair to compare them to one-another really. Geoffrey was very much more approachable and down-to-earth - Lee was quite intimidating, but very polite and kind and a real gent.  Either way, what great fortune, to have met two influential actors in my life!
Tumblr media
I’ll try think up another topic for another GR ramble within the next week or so. If you have any questions or comments, ofc, feel free to drop me a DM! I don’t bite. :)

I've never seen an episode of supernatural all I see is what's on your blog and each and every day I become more confused about the writing of the show and why people enjoy it :l
okay well first off i am SO sorry you have to see me like this jknbuvgyuhjn i cannot believe im spnblogging in 2020 like im 15 again but things happen i guess.
second of all, the thing to know about supernatural is.... i think, for general audiences, it is an average-to-good show. it's not Bad. It's not Beloved and/or Acclaimed. objectively, i think is also probably the most balanced view of the show and is also probably what the cw and/or people who worked on the show see it as. it lasted 15 years because it consistently pulled in reliable numbers for the cw and grabbed a lot of demographics. like i know the tumblr bubble skews perceptions but, people of all ages, genders, sexualities watched and enjoyed supernatural, yes even to the very end. most people are also not looking at supernatural with the hyperfocused lens that tumblr is and that’s like... okay. those fans aren’t any less relevant or important. if only tumblr was watching supernatural, i promise it would’ve been cancelled like at least 7 years ago.
the spn *fandom* is interesting because like one, no one is watching the same fucking show. like we all watched the same episodes but like this fandom cant even agree on like...basic facets of canon, let alone digging into complex meta. people’s views of characters actions and motivations skew wildly. things one side of the fandom considers nearly canon are like essentially viewed as ooc on other sides of the fandom. you love and hate all the characters and everyone is always about to start swinging on everyone else. you have to simultaneously juggle the ideas that the writers — and for the record this show has had four showrunners and like a billion individual writers who all see and interpret it slightly differently — are brilliant and the writers legitimately are both stupid and bad at their jobs. you have to turn your brain off in terms of continuity because they retcon their own lore every 15 seconds. this isn’t even getting into the ship wars, the boundary crossing, the weird invasiveness , etc., etc., etc. supernatural’s writing is sometimes incredible, sometimes terrible, but generally pretty average, but it had a charm (ESPECIALLY IN SEASONS 1-3) that reeled you in, even if you hated the genre.
when a show is on this long, i think the fans (rightly so) will look back and dig in and get nitpicky on things they wish were covered with more care. things that the show obviously did not decide to write with the intention of addressing/grappling with later on. case in point: dean’s drinking habits. with the exception of like... season 7 where they DO address it, dean drinks a lot as a feature of his character with little to no consequence. he doesn’t get drunk. he’s always driving. it might as well be water. the writers don’t intend for that to be more than just a facet of what makes him a rough and tough action hero even though logically, he should be drunk all the time. even w/ interviews w/ the cast/crew, it’s clear the writers don’t think the fans will care and/or notice a lot of things. they do, because well, they’re invested. the fandom extrapolates because that’s what fandom does, but i really don’t think the writers connect those dots because dean’s drinking /isn’t/ a problem until they need it to be. because spn has gone on so long, it has more instances of things like this than other shows, and our cultural contexts have also evolved a lot along the way from 2005 to 2020. so again, there’s a lot to work with. i don’t really think that’s so much a reflection of the quality of the show than it is a reflection of how long it’s been on and the way society has changed since then. dean not knowing what myspace is is funny for two completely different reasons in 2005 and in 2020, for example.
my own personal opinion is, there’s a lot to enjoy about supernatural. seasons 1-5 are legitimately good tv. for all their flaws, they have a very clear aesthetic and tell a story that is well-structured and relatively coherent in terms of themes and continuity. they set up complex characters and relationships and everyone’s motivations make sense and that arc wraps on a tragic but ultimately narratively consistent and thus fulfilling point. of course, there’s stuff i personally like and dislike but separating my emotions from it, it’s very good. i think if anything, i would recommend anyone watch those five seasons and then decide whether they want to continue or not. if you don’t, you’ll end on a note that feels complete. it’s what i’m doing w/ my friend elaine, currently, actually. if she decides she wants to continue after 5, we’ll do that, but for now we’re just vibing in season 1. after that point, i think if you decide you care enough about the characters to push through wildly inconsistent writing, there’s stuff to enjoy in seasons 6-15, but the quality and particularly the consistency dips and this is also where the retconning really starts to...intensify. it’s also where the mythos of supernatural grows bigger than the show itself, which i think was always supernatural’s downfall. the crew started caring more about the whims of the fandom and frankly the fandom became more of the story than the show, and that’s how you get people piecing together what supernatural is based on out of context gifsets that skew perceptions wildly and get Supernatural Fandom™ which... frankly, in my opinion, changed fandom culture as a whole for the worse, like yes it’s a huge, powerful and often memeable behemoth but also... the way it changed creator-fan interactions is something we’re going to be unpacking for a long time. i think had the writers tuned out fandom wars and internet yelling and strived to tell a story that made sense and was well constructed to /them/, we wouldn’t be here and seasons 6-15 could’ve found a way to be as beloved as the first third of the show. i’m personally of the opinion that being a fan of something, for better or for worse, does not entitle you to part of it’s creative process. it doesn’t become a collaboration, and the door is always there if you get to the point where you want to leave. i think supernatural getting too caught up in its own fandom and balancing all these conflicting interests is ultimately what made the last 10 seasons, and particularly the back third of the show oftentimes flounder. the finale chaos, in my opinion, happened because they tried to please everyone by keeping too many things vague so people would have room to play in their own sandboxes and round out the story the way they wanted to see it and thus ultimately, a lot of things were left in the air and so for many people, the closure they were hoping for just wasn’t there.
i dont know how this became a long and scattered collection of thoughts but tldr, people enjoy supernatural because at the end of the day, it’s an enjoyable show and i think the more you stew in a fandom bubble, there’s more to get worked up about. which is fine. i like that fandom engages in complex conversations that the show won’t grapple with, but that’s not for everyone and i don’t think the fact that we have these conversations is necessarily an indictment of the show’s overall quality.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #232
Fri May 01 2020 [12:04 AM] Wack'd: Opening with some really moody, atmospheric color work here from Glynis Wein
Tumblr media
[12:05 AM] maxwellelvis: Now you might remember Diablo. Not a lot of folks wear masks that ostentatious. [12:05 AM] Wack'd: I mean. I remember the mask. [12:05 AM] Bocaj: I'm kind of angry that the issue title is back to the basics [12:05 AM] Bocaj: I want to slap it [12:05 AM] Wack'd: Same [12:06 AM] maxwellelvis: I'm still struck by the irony, because one thing you really can't accuse the Byrne era as a whole of is sticking to formuler. [12:06 AM] Aleph Null: i don’t want to slap the issue but i do want to slap john byrne [12:07 AM] Wack'd: Okay, so, like. I'm kind of immediately sold on Bryne, because: 1. making Diablo kind of a put-upon normy who makes potions in his apartment gives him some much needed personality, and 2. can you imagine being like "fuck yeah, my favorite badass villain, Diablo, he's gonna make so many potions and kick so much ass" and then this happens?
Tumblr media
[12:08 AM] Bocaj: I can’t imagine such a person [12:08 AM] Wack'd: I mean sure but, like, the letters page seems to indicate they exist [12:08 AM] Bocaj: 😮 [12:10 AM] Wack'd: Not sure how I feel about our first look at the new Sue putting her at a salon, but I do like that she gets to be snarky.
Tumblr media
[12:11 AM] maxwellelvis: I'm suddenly reminded of the Corman movie deciding to make Sue and Johnny kids when Reed and Ben and Victor were in college. That was... weird. [12:12 AM] Wack'd: ...i will remind you that sue being a minor in fantastic four #1 is canon [12:12 AM] maxwellelvis: *shudder* [12:12 AM] Umbramatic: welp [12:13 AM] Wack'd: Oh cool our first Sue fight scene has her immediately get her ass kicked. That's certainly back-to-basics for you.
Tumblr media
[12:13 AM] Umbramatic: geez writers [12:14 AM] Wack'd: I like that our first look at Ben is him getting emotional! Yes! Good!
Tumblr media
[12:14 AM] maxwellelvis: I can't remember if this play had any relation to the film, [12:15 AM] maxwellelvis: besides obviously the subject matter. [12:15 AM] Wack'd: Okay, so, in the interest of fairness, Ben immediately gets his ass kicked by a water monster who traps him inside itself where he starts to drown. [12:15 AM] Wack'd: So it might just be that this issue is gonna have everyone get their ass kicked upon introduction and it's just unintended Sue went first. [12:17 AM] maxwellelvis: With their elemental weaknesses, too [12:17 AM] Wack'd: This scene doesn't tell us a ton about Bryne's take on Johnny, but it is a pretty funny gag.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[12:18 AM] Wack'd: And it's nice to see at least one 70s character survives the Brynining. [12:18 AM] maxwellelvis: Didn't he come up with her? Or was that Roy? [12:18 AM] Wack'd: She's one of Roy's, yeah. [12:19 AM] maxwellelvis: In that case, if I had to guess, he was intrigued with her fear of fire and I guess nobody ever asked Roy what was up with that. [12:19 AM] Wack'd: Its been a good two and a half years since we saw her. [12:19 AM] maxwellelvis: Since that plot, and Frankie, were dropped. [12:20 AM] Wack'd: Reed's intro scene is nothing special and Bryne's take is the same as everyone else's. He's doing experiments and thinking technobabble to himself. [12:20 AM] Wack'd: I guess this is more Kirbyesque detail work than I remember recently.
Tumblr media
[12:21 AM] Wack'd: Anyway he gets attacked by a fire monster and he escapes unscathed because of course he does. [12:22 AM] maxwellelvis: Should have sent an ice guy, Diablo. [12:22 AM] Bocaj: 😐 [12:22 AM] maxwellelvis: That's apparently the one thing Reed can't escape, if I remember the 2005 movie right. [12:22 AM] Bocaj: I guess this is back to basics after all [12:22 AM] Bocaj: And Reed ya basic [12:22 AM] Wack'd: Heh [12:22 AM] Wack'd: Anyway in his escape Reed glides like a plastic bag towards the park, where he finds Frankie and she explains the situation. [12:23 AM] maxwellelvis: I'd say to use the cold thing in your thing but, how many FF bad guys use cold as a gimmick? Outside of death traps and the like? [12:23 AM] Wack'd: None I can think of. [12:23 AM] maxwellelvis: So yeah, outside of death traps it probably wouldn't come up. [12:24 AM] maxwellelvis: Well, maybe if you adapted that one arctic adventure, as a reason why Sue has to go it alone there. [12:24 AM] Bocaj: 'Reed shouldn't be plastic man' letter writer intensifies [12:24 AM] Wack'd: I like that Bryne is smart enough to do different fire effects! That one annual where the artist didn't draw Johnny and Jim Hammond differently bothered me.
Tumblr media
[12:25 AM] maxwellelvis: I blame the colorist for that. [12:25 AM] maxwellelvis: Toro looked different, at least, in the black and whites. [12:25 AM] maxwellelvis: Toro doesn't have the cross-hatching Johnny does. [12:26 AM] Wack'd: Oh hey! Sue does indeed get to be badass with no one's help. Also her new haircut is incredibly queer and I am here for it
Tumblr media
[12:27 AM] Umbramatic: the truth come out: does sue like girls [12:27 AM] maxwellelvis: Hmm, this might be jumping the gun but the title and stock setup seems like it's more Byrne laying out the ways he's going to be different from the other runs. [12:27 AM] maxwellelvis: I.e. by taking this stock FF plot and tossing in a few tiny subversions. [12:27 AM] Wack'd: 'Sue shouldn't be Green Lantern' letter writer intensifies
Tumblr media
[12:28 AM] maxwellelvis: Diablo's reduced to living in a tiny rent-controlled apartment, Reed isn't singlehandedly saving the day, Sue gets to do stuff again, etc. [12:30 AM] Wack'd: "There's a scuba store right there!" is some real job-for-Aquaman shit but, like, in reverse
Tumblr media
[12:30 AM] Wack'd: Unfortunately the water monster realizes that he can force Ben to give up his oxygen if they just...try to drown someone else instead [12:31 AM] Wack'd: And so Ben makes the world's saddest heroic sacrifice [12:31 AM] Bocaj: Aw [12:31 AM] Umbramatic: don't they know that when submerged ben can breathe underwater for the rest of his life [12:32 AM] Wack'd: HAHAHAHHA SUE'S FORCE FIELDS STILL COME OUT OF HER FOREHEAD. YES.
Tumblr media
[12:32 AM] Wack'd: I know this detail goes away at some point but it's sure hanging in there [12:32 AM] Bocaj: What a mighty BLOOSH [12:32 AM] Wack'd: 🥁 [12:33 AM] Bocaj: Thank ye [12:33 AM] Wack'd: Dangit Ben you turned it into a Sandman
Tumblr media
[12:35 AM] Wack'd: Oh good another scene where Reed has to dictate to Sue how to use her powers. PICK A SIDE, BRYNE

[12:35 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Reed electrocutes the water monster [12:36 AM] Wack'd: Destroying it [12:36 AM] Umbramatic: Water is weak to Electric! [12:36 AM] maxwellelvis: I mean, it's kind of a step up that Sue's like, giving feedback to his plan [12:37 AM] maxwellelvis: mostly because Reed's idea hear sounded a tad suicidal but still... [12:37 AM] Wack'd: Reed determines that the key to defeating these things is to change their state of matter, so Ben uses a nearby pipe to turn the rock monster to mud. [12:37 AM] Wack'd: And Sue, uh, needs to be told what to do about the air monster. [12:37 AM] Umbramatic: by hitting it that hard? [12:37 AM] Umbramatic: ben i mean [12:37 AM] Wack'd: No it's attached to a water main [12:38 AM] Wack'd: Sue is instructed to compress the air monster until it turns to liquid which. I am not sure that's how that works but I don't know enough about air to dispute it [12:39 AM] Wack'd: Another old trope: Sue does a badass thing and then immediately suffers repercussions [12:39 AM] Wack'd: Usually it's passing out but this time it's just a headache [12:39 AM] Umbramatic: aw [12:40 AM] maxwellelvis: "Condensation commonly occurs when a vapor is cooled and/or compressed to its saturation limit when the molecular density in the gas phase reaches its maximal threshold. Vapor cooling and compressing equipment that collects condensed liquids is called a "condenser".” Checks out. Thanks, Wikipedia. [12:40 AM] Wack'd: I mean they're capable of planning and complex thought but, like, okay. This is basically just Superman's "I can murder robots" loophole.
Tumblr media
[12:41 AM] Umbramatic: oh no [12:41 AM] Bocaj: Didn't one talk and express feelings [12:41 AM] Wack'd: You can't even argue that it's just Diablo acting through them because this happens
Tumblr media
[12:43 AM] Bocaj: Reed isn't the guy you look to for ethics. He turned some alien invaders into cows and then let them get ground up into hamburgers [12:43 AM] Bocaj: He'll justify anything to anyone [12:43 AM] Wack'd: Anyway transmutation won't work on fire (will google that never probably) so...Johnny gets hotter than the elemental embodiment of flame and that kills it somehow [12:44 AM] Bocaj: I could see the argument that he burned up all the air before the other guy could, snuffing him [12:44 AM] Bocaj: Like how they put out oil well fires [12:44 AM] Bocaj: With explosions [12:44 AM] Wack'd: Alright [12:44 AM] Wack'd: Johnny's not a scientist so it probably didn't work for the reasons he thinks it worked anyway [12:45 AM] Wack'd: Anyway elementals = alchemy = Diablo. So deduces Reed. But how will they find him? [12:45 AM] maxwellelvis: Transmutation is another legitimate scientific term. [12:46 AM] Wack'd: I know. [12:46 AM] maxwellelvis: It's not the transformation of matter from one state to another, apparently, which is how they beat the other three elementals, but yeah, that won't work on a fire elemental because fire is not matter. [12:46 AM] Wack'd: I was saying I don't know if/why it won't work on fire [12:46 AM] Wack'd: There we go [12:46 AM] maxwellelvis: It's energy. [12:46 AM] Wack'd: Okay! The elementals are not dead, they just retreated back into Diablo's holding containers.
Tumblr media
[12:47 AM] maxwellelvis: Dude, he's got the statuettes of the elemental monsters everyone saw them brawling with. [12:47 AM] Wack'd: Yes, that's what happens next
Tumblr media
[12:48 AM] maxwellelvis: "Hello!" [12:51 AM] Bocaj: I like how Reed was ethically correct accidentally. That sure is a thing. [12:52 AM] Wack'd: Anyway, that's the end of the first story of the Bryne run. It was...okay. Obviously it fell into a few easy traps I didn't love. And of course I always hate when the plot relies on the villain wanting a grudge match when there's this much collateral damage involved. [12:53 AM] Wack'd: But there were some high points and I'm not pessimistic about the prospect of more. [12:53 AM] maxwellelvis: I liked how the elementals were defeated by actual, real-world science. [12:54 AM] maxwellelvis: Rather than the mangled misunderstandings and outright bunk Doug Moench was using. [12:54 AM] Wack'd: That was something Moench seemed real big on too. It's the sort of thing that's nice if you can get it but after ten straight issues of Moench trying to turn the book into an edutainment program I wasn't, like, thrilled. [12:54 AM] Wack'd: I think Moench's only big misstep was buying into quack neurology? The science in his other issues seemed sound enough [12:55 AM] Wack'd: Okay, also I guess there's probably not aliens inside black holes. [12:55 AM] maxwellelvis: I'm more thrilled because unlike Moench, Byrne got it right. Granted that's because it was much simpler concepts than what Moench was trying to deal in, but it did mean it was easier to utilize it in the plot without having to stand around while Reed explains everything. [12:55 AM] Wack'd: ...oh god why did he spend so much time on the science of stuff if he didn't know anything. Why did I read that [12:56 AM] Wack'd: But yeah okay I see your point

Eno/Cale - "One Word" From the album Wrong Way Up (October 5, 1990)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
Back when it was new--and I was 25 years old--I eagerly purchased this compact disc. Oh, it was a time, man. The CD was packaged in--get this (if you can: most people today I would assume don't know what it had been)--a longbox. A theft deterrent then, and a music geek collectible now. Funny the way things transform, sometimes.
So. It being that time, I didn't know as much about Brian Eno or John Cale then as I do now, but I still knew Here Come the Warm Jets and White Light/White Heat. And because those records had been great, I expected Wrong Way Up to be pretty awesome.
Did I know then that the 3-1/2-minute revolution called "Sky Saw" featured Cale? Or that there was a cult album named June 1, 1974 that featured them both?
Not sure. Wise now, was I wise then?
Anyway, the excitement before the purchase turned into disappointment afterwards. This album, it did not rock, it bore no traces of Warm Jets or White Heat, and it wasn't weird at all, and I sold it and I forgot about it as quickly as possible.
Lately though, nearly 30 years later, thinner of hair, and wiser of the music, man, I've been on an Eno jag, and I came across a review of the album on Pitchfork that suggested the album, synthpop though it was, achieved nothing less than brilliance in its rather conflicted creation.
Hell, I hadn't even known that the artists hadn't gotten along. . . . So I figured, what *had* I known, in my judgement 30 years ago? I'd been only 25, and had probably been a little bit um, over-influenced, by hardcore punk. My tastes are more sophisticated now! I could like an album that maybe wasn't so manic. Really I could. And shit, everything I've been doing for the last month was all about what a fucking genius Eno was. . . Maybe I'd been hasty in my dismissal of WWU back then, simply because it didn't sound like "Third Uncle," or "I Heard Her Call My Name." 'Cause hell, on reflection, thinking about it in 2019, in the midst of a Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno freakout, neither does "Luftschloss."
Goddamn, then, let's try it again, I thought. So last week, I bought a CD copy off Discogs. Received it yesterday, listened to it on the way into work this morning, and ... it's unabashedly awful.
It's lame, predictable, and without a trace of the genius which otherwise marks both men's work. You're tempted to say a few things, although you should probably resist the urges. You're tempted to say that it was a case of men outside the times attempting foolishly to sound like them, but that's wrong. 1990 had no great rush of synthpop albums.
1990 was about Jane's Addiction; Jane's Addiction, and Happy Mondays and Sonic Youth's major label debut. Nobody was making synthpop. That these two major artists felt like going there, I don't know, it's odd, it's strange, it's fucked up.
You're also tempted to say, maybe, if you're not that familiar with the facts, that this was the work of giants who had exhausted their creative energies prior to its making, young lions become old farts. But, of course, that's ridiculous. Five years after this mistake of a record, Eno would record Nerve Net, which showed him as able as his youngself to stretch things out. And if you want pop, shit, Eno made Another Day on Earth in 2005, as he was approaching 60, and that is a brilliant, quirky, intelligent pop record, even if it's not as much like M83 as I might prefer.
Wrong Way Up is a detour into mediocrity. Definite, and puzzling, that is.
It all goes to show many things, perhaps most importantly--and I swear I'm not looking to trash Pitchfork specifically here--that if an artist known for making good things makes something crappy, there will always--always--be somebody around to tell people that, fuck the facts, it is in fact pretty good.
There's also the reminder given that I had the suss of the thing down back in 1990. I like to think of myself as smarter now, wiser if you have to go there, and I was prepared to second-guess myself, and take a lesson from it too, but at least in this case, me and the version of myself that existed three decades ago are smack dab in agreement. There's a stolidity about that I find appealing, but maybe, just maybe, there's also a disappointing inability to evolve.
Funny the way things don't transform, sometimes.

BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE
My Bloody Quarantine part 1
Tumblr media
The last six months have been pretty shit, hey? It looks like there is no future anymore... global warming, COVID-19, Australia on fire, wars... shall I go on?
ANYWAY, we are not here to talk about a stupid government led by a buffoon with a mop in his head (ops!) but to praise one of the bands who kept me company during this bloody quarantine of mine: BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE. This German act, in fact, hung out with me during the several nights of insomnia, which, trust me, were devastating, loooooong and cold. Cigarettes after cigarettes, wine after wine, I thoroughly enjoyed the discography of the quartet and I thought it was time to write something about them.
Tumblr media
Because of the slow-moving and nocturnal nature of their music, a doom jazz plenty of end-of-the-world ballads, or, in their words "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down-tuned Autopsy sounds", I happily matched their records to these apocalyptic months. Just like a dark noir by Leo Malet, or a Terry Gilliam dystopian movie, Bohren & Der Club of Gore managed to convey, over the last 25 years, a deep sense of ethical abandonment and claustrophobic imprisonment. There is no future in the music of the German band, no escape from reality, which is doomed and looped into an endless limbo. A not long time ago - which now seems AGES ago, to be honest - I went to the White Cube for the latest Kiefer’s exhibition. I believe that the combination of BCG music and Kiefer’s artworks pretty well.
Tumblr media
Over the last months, while listening to them, between a Medoc and a Nebbiolo, I was picturing the band in a smoky “bar at the end of the world”, channelling some kind of Tom Hillenbrant’s dystopian political setting or a Lynde Mallison’s grey cold painting. The best description, though, comes from the band website: “Dear friends of nighttime drives, remote bridges to nowhere and empty multi-storey car parks”. Club Silencio state of mind, indeed.
youtube
The ensemble has constantly been releasing high-quality records since 1994, with the first doom jazz album called MOTEL GORE - albeit the first release was a 1992 cassette filled with post-hardcore noise published under the name of Langspielkassette. MOTEL GORE is, as someone brilliantly described it “audio pointillism”. I think this similitude is accurate: the band did draw tiny dots of obscure, eerie, music on canvases of sound. “Die Fulci Nummer” drives me mad, with its spectral adagio: it’s so good it would’ve been great in the Fulci’s masterpiece Non si Sevizia un Paperino. “Cairo Keller” is charming and evocative, reminding me of a possible soundtrack for Lovecraft The Nameless City. Extra points for the brilliant reference of the cover.
youtube
in 1997 BCG published MIDNIGHT RADIO, two hours of lynchian-LA-night-driving-without-a-destination soundtrack. if it is true that its predecessor "Gore Motel" is more song-oriented, and therefore a lot easier to listen to - it’s evident that Midnight Radio is more rewarding in its own special way: it’s a journey in the darkest corner of your mind. Yes, because the journeys BCG offers are not only external but often internal. The band has developed over the years a therapeutic dialogue between the listeners and their consciousness. Jungian jazz music anyone? LET’S DEBATE!
Tumblr media
By the way, while writing this article, I’ve realised how difficult is to talk about BCG music without quoting several cliches - everyone always ends up referring to the same stuff:” car parks”, “night drive”, “Lynch”. But I have to admit, in this case, it’s definitely true! Listening to BCG can really inspire these topics under our skins, as trivial as it sounds! The point is: they do it better than anyone else, they have been doing this forever and they represent the top in this particular sub-genre. With the results of a cinematographic component in their music that leads to these night drive scenarios, post-modern inner state of minds. Bravo!
Tumblr media
Let’s go back to Midnight Radio, to BGC and their discography. It’s undeniable that their music fits perfectly in the set of the SLOW TV/MUSIC/YOUTUBE movement. From The Norway train to this 1986 Canadian TV show called “NIGHT WALK” (which, by the way, looks freaking awesome), from Andy Warhol’ “SLEEP” to Kiarostami or Tarkovsky cinema, the slow movement has left an imprint to contemporary culture. Arguably, BGC, with their long holistic records, is part of the movement. Calming the listeners and bringing them into a meditative state of mind, without being mindfulness - luckily. The point is: BCG makes you think about yourselves, finding out that you are someone you should be scared of! Know yourself, fear yourself!
youtube
All that Jazz came in 2000 with the thrilling “SUNSET MISSION”, thanks to the help of saxophonist Christoph Clöser. In this record the band opened up the sound, literally letting some fresh air to enter their music, easing the claustrophobic moods of the previous albums. A hint of lounge-ness came in, due to the mellow, yet sophisticated, sax of Mr Clöser. It is still quintessential BCG, with the nihilism of the band raising up form the bass. Slow, reiterated bass lines are running through the record, giving to Sunset Mission a gloomy, hypnotic cadence. The liner notes include a quote from Matt Wagner's Grendel comic book, which reads: "Alone in the comforting darkness the creature waits. As confusion reigns on this hellish stage, the deafening grind of machinery, the odious clot of chemical waste. Still, the trail of his ultimate prey leads through this steely maze to these, the addled offspring of the modern world.
Tumblr media
According to many people, 2002 ‘BLACK EARTH” is BCG masterpiece. I don’t know yet, as I REALLY like them all. What I can say is that Black Earth sounds a lot more accessible, with an even more developed sense of ‘lounge-ness’ which was not so evident in the previous records.  Blach Earth is a good record. Perhaps the trick here is the balanced tempo of the saxophone. Perfectly played within the songs at the right time, Christoph Clöser’ sax conveys an open jazzy sound. One of my favourite directors ever is Jean-Pierre Melville, his movies are everything I like in term of style and plot. Noir a là Dashiell Hammett, but French and without hope - give me more of this, Hollywood, please! Enough of fucking Marvel heroes, give me noir hard-boiled movies!
Tumblr media
Black Earth could have easily been the perfect great soundtrack for Mr Melville’s movies - especially, IHMO, Bob le flambeur. Think about it: a french man, with a cigarette in his mouth, gambling his life for a young woman, in a dirty Marseille, with the BCG slow tempo doomed jazz. yasss please, give me more. Or a glacial Alain Delon killing his lover for money.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black Earth was followed up, in 2005, by “GEISTERFAUST”, which is considered a slower than ever version of the former album. In Ghost Fist (this is the translation) Bohren & Der Club of Gore has stripped down its sound to the bone, becoming more gentle and less aggressive without any compromise. 5 songs only, named after the 5 fingers of the hand, for an hour of dark jazz. Again, excellent quality.
youtube
I have been buying BCG on CD, I think this music on vinyl does not sound perfect UNLESS you have an extremely high-quality sound system, Like some classical music issue, where you need to hear the pianissimo of the piano and single notes, BCG music deserves a very clean medium, I would say CD is the best.
youtube
Jazz de nuit again on their seventh album “DOLORES” published in 2008. This record is pure Badalamenti, pure Lynch in the night. Within the ten songs of Dolores, the core idea of slow-music is even more highlighted, with no guitars at all on the whole album and a sedated keyboard-based mood.  In 2009 the band released a 10 minute EP called “MITLEID LADY”. it is strange, because, albeit recorded just after Dolores, it sounds way more gloomy and somehow different. It is BCG but has another level of sophistication compared to the previous record. This step further in the direction of stylistic accuracy is confirmed two years after, in 2011, with another EP, this one named “BEILEID”. The cover of the record is a reference to the famous Edward Gorey, or at least I believe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The record includes the cover of  "Catch My Heart" by German heavy metal band Warlock, with vocals from Mike Patton. I believe this is the only song with a singer in the entire catalogue of the band. Beileid is a cinematic mood-changer composed of pained saxophone solos, and ghostly string sections, an album that will sweep your mind away into dreamland. A must-have IHMO.
In 2013 the ensemble released “PIANO NIGHTS” probably the warmest record of the band. The Piano obviously helps a lot in making the sound softer and brighter - candle lighted rigorously. A German Gothic feast, with a touch of Teutonic expressionism - who remembers the movie The Hands Of Orlac. BCG should definitely play the soundtracks of this movie. A twisted, dark, thriller with Gothic and expressionist elements. After many years, the band introduces the
Tumblr media
Finally, in 2020, the band published “PATCHOULI BLUE”. A pristine, unique, summa of their work, which manages to sound similar to other releases of the band, yet unique, with something different, like a small accent. 50s noir glam, Badalamenti, German Gothic, Slow-Movement philosophy are all elements we can find in this record, but there is something else: a hint of electronic, which can possibly open new territories to the band. I am curious to see if they will become a techno ambient act in the like of Gas (joking).
Aristotle once said that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I guess this is the whole point in BCG’s music. The synergy the band has been consistently showing over the last 3 decades, and the constant refinement of their own skills.

My thoughts on the upcoming Doom movie reboot
This is something I haven't never really talked about. Especially I first went on Tumblr to search for any people talking of it. Yet theirs hardly or just barely anything. Especially I didn't wanna look through the whole thing but doom movie reboot doesn't work.
But just in case if anyone is wondering yeah theirs a Doom movie reboot that's being made I forgot if their in post production or not. But it's gonna be straight to DVD or whatever whether streaming or whatever.....
Basically this is gonna be me rambling and it isn't much of a rant but could be. Also just how I feel like a Doom movie should of gone.....yet also me talking about the realistic nature of why maybe something like my ideas wouldn't happen but it sounds like bullshit considering certain R rated films.
Honestly the Doom movie reboot is a film I'm not interested in. Basically when I found out it was straight to DVD and not gonna be released in theaters. I wasn't interested.
Especially over time I didn't cared for the movie more as time went on considering certain news updates.
Honestly I seriously dislike how this movie just came out of nowhere to me personally unless their was an announcement. It was first found out when one of the actors seriously tweeted about being casted in the film and gonna say I got this from Mr. H Reviews he's done videos on these.
It's kind of crazy I mean unless they were gonna announce it. It's just stupid that it's just so secretive. Especially why straight to DVD why couldn't it be in theaters? In fact as a big Doom fan and Doomguy/Doomslayer fan the idea of a movie reboot that's good is something want.
Listen I never wanna see the old 2005 film. Even though when I was young I saw moments. But as a fan of the series and hearing so much shit about it I don't wanna even see the film.
Well I've heard some little details that are nice but just......it's weird to talk about and I don't wanna sound toxic.
But why can't we have a big R rated fun action film that's brutal as fuck and has a kick ass soundtrack. With Mick Gordon doing the music like the 2016 reboot and the upcoming Doom Eternal game.(2nd edit also music like from Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch and other metal bands too)
Seriously I have ideas and even casting choices.
Such as the brilliant fan casting of Tom Hardy as Doomguy/Doomslayer. While I feel now these days Tom Hardy might not be interested in a role like Doomguy. Yet considering works like Mad Max Fury Road he might. Also while I've tried to think of other actors but it's very difficult especially to fit the lore. But honestly Tom Hardy kicks ass he fits.
Including other casting choices like Jamie Lee Curtis as Olivia Pierce. While I have thought of Liam Nesson. It's just Darin De Paul is so damn good as Samuel Hayden why the hell replace him. Had to Google Liam's last name and samuel hayden voice actor which is on a Google screen. Honestly this voice acting thing should go to Vega as well.
While yes I'm thinking more of the basis of the movie based upon the 2016 reboot. I've had ideas what if it's a mixture of the original games like Doom 1 and 2. Along with the reboot don't worry Hell On Earth would be the sequel. Basically the whole idea the original games took place in the 2020's but still.(2nd edit still most likely 2149 like the 2016 game)
I've seen ideas people mentioning of what if a Doom movie that's like Hardcore Henry. I've never seen that movie yet I've read the story on Wikipedia and the idea is great. Yet the original idea for me people might not like. But it would be done in a way respectful to the games.
I've seen people talked about Dredd 2012 and how it should be like that film and that film is fucking awesome. But the idea is Doomguy is still Doomguy. Yet the more character stuff you'll get will be with other characters who join along with Doomguy. As a joke he's basically baby sitting these characters and their trying to help out. While it still has Doomguy be this quiet protagonist that really speaks loud with his actions and also in some moments showing his humanity still.
Especially get a reference to Daisy in there some how.
Especially Doomguy is still the protagonist while we have other characters that can talk as they react and try to interact with Doomguy in some ways. Especially if they try to help him.
Yet honestly one thing that got me thinking and I guess is a road block. What about the whole idea is this the same Doomguy from the classic games and the reboot series where he's gone through dimensions and shit. Yes I'm one of those people who goes with that especially with Quake Champions confirming it. Or is it a whole different Doomguy being a badass and has the same agenda. It's a weird thing to think about but I'm probably thinking about it too much.
Yet honestly when I think about it but let me say this. Universal has the money to do this. Their one of the biggest companies and they have the money to back it up.
Or are they seriously scared of what happened with the first film. Is it a big risk probably so to do a film like what I'm talking about it probably is. But we have films that have been R rated and being big box office hits whether their low budget or whatever else.
Also I should get to the big thing.....the whole female Doomguy shit that was tweeted and people were pissed off and it bothered me as well. Especially nights ago I remember speaking to myself watching Christopher Ridge's video on the movie reboot and his thoughts on what's going on. I don't watch his channel much really yet it made me think but still I'm bothered.
Listen I have nothing against female protagonists and....I might sound stupid I weirdly want that in Doom while Doomguy is still the main character. I ignore the novels because people disown those novels and from what I heard they go in a completely different direction.
But I feel yeah Doomguy is the base character for the player. Yet over time the character has I guess involved where he's basically his own character while you can still be him. Especially just whatever story parts while story isn't as important as gameplay it's something I look at. I would like Doomguy portrayed accurately.
Honestly while I've read a comment below Christopher Ridge's video on the movie with the tweet that someone said fans could be assuming or whatever. We don't know if Doomguy is in the movie. I do agree with Christopher or if I remember he mentioned that actress should of maybe not said that or should of been more careful about saying that. Because that seriously bothered me as such a big fan of the character Doomguy/Doomslayer himself.
I feel or might of forgotten stuff that is maybe all I have to say.
Tags done and decided to put this in the charger before tags. I just wanted to mention my opinions about this. Thinking of it I'll post my opinions on the film if it gets a trailer hopefully. If it gets one and not released out if nowhere hopefully.
Especially if we get a film with ideas like mine. Can we get hash tags like, #ripandtear and #alldemonsmustdie #killalldemons and more whatever else
Edit glad theirs no notes on this yet. But I went to the bathroom and seriously forgot adding an awesome image to this because I want to.
Tumblr media
I just love that image and I basically want a film like that, live action with some CGI and practical demons. CGI for ones that need it. Along having some story but it's basically Doomguy/Doomslayer kicking hell's ass.

911.
I’ll admit I was really worried about Lady Gaga’s song 911. “Pop a 911, and pop another one”
It’s anti-psychotic medication, not Pringles. Once you pop, you’re definitely supposed to stop. Let it do it’s thing.
My main concern was that her 911 might be a common but commonly-abused anxiety med like a Valium or a Xanax, which are so trendy right now in the world of pop. Pop one, pop another one, and another and another...and find yourself just recreationally popping a Xanny at the mildest inconvenience instead of tackling the actual root of the problem.
But then I learned that Gaga’s 911 was an old friend-slash-adversary I’ve had in my own life; olanzapine, aka Zyprexa. I spent about two years on olanzapine and I’m really not sure why.
It started around about January 2007 when I lost my job, got very into smoking pot, and reading Perez Hilton. This was the exact same time as Britney was going through her very-publicised stuff. Our meltdowns were mirrored.
But anyway, I was depressed and not coping with the real world very well at all (something I’d learn much later was probably my undiagnosed autism) while also on the end of a couple of years’ caning at the clubs and taking E (and other stuff) most weekends (I didn’t understand the concept of giving it a rest). I started my first anti-depressant shortly beforehand and had a rotten time of it, and also started with a psychologist (also, a rotten time. Too much “you’re an awful child for taking drugs” and not enough “let’s look at why you feel the need to peace out on reality every weekend”.)
Eventually I end up living back at Mum and Dad’s, constantly chastised for anything and everything to do with the clubs and forcibly removed from my entire social support network. (This one hurt a lot, especially as someone with such tremendous difficulty building and maintaining friendships.) And somehow, I didn’t manage to be getting any healthier! I actually seemed to be getting worse! I would buy six tins of energy drink (who remembers Samedi?) and have little, legal benders alone. (I’d drink a lot in private too. A LOT.)
And then, the worst bit, I would eventually scrub myself “clean” of club life and banish dance music, fluoro clothing, and everything remotely ravey to the depths of my soul and re-emerge a Chuck Taylor wearing indie rock queen backed by a soundtrack of whiney guitar rock and Triple J. (The one highlight of this era was the band Klaxons, who managed to blend the two and provide an “acceptable” guitar based lifeline to the rave.)
I’m getting off track here. What I really want to say here, is in this bleak period of total self loss I engaged the services of a dreadful GP with no business treating the mental health of a young woman in the mid 2000s. He had absolutely no clue what I was experiencing, and one time (probably in 2007, 13 years ago) I said “hey maybe I’m autistic or on the spectrum or something, and that’s why I can’t operate in a typical way in the real world” and I was laughed at and told not to bring it up again. And then for about two years he flitted between garden variety “anxiety and depression”, Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2 and eventually ended up with the grand daddy of bad diagnoses; Borderline Personality Disorder. And given Zyprexa to take daily.
I did end up in the hospital a lot, but that was out of total pure desperation. I was numb and lifeless, but fed up. I’d scratch myself up with a razor superficially just to get dramatic enough for an admission, but not enough for it to actually hurt. (My real self-harm, I recognise now, was my drinking and the head-hitting.) No one’s listening, and nothing is improving...and the only way to get anyone to spend more than five minutes with my case was an admission.
I felt like in this era, leading all the way up to 2013 when I had the mother of all breakdowns/breakthroughs I was rewarded for being a good little girl and basically being the antithesis of myself. Mum once said “I feel like I have my girl back again” and I was very, very not myself. I was a fantasy pastiche of every behaviour that I’d know I’d get brownie points for, and yet I’d look in the mirror and see someone totally unrecogniseable. My only safe place to think and behave as myself was late at night in front of a computer connected to weirdos around the globe while the real world outside was shrouded in peaceful darkness. Inside my headphones I was able to sneak back into my electronic power-world of dance music. Eventually I totally lost the plot, feeling totally shackled by trying to be this *thing* I’d invented to make everyone around me happy.
I started waking up from this fake iteration of myself in about late 2014 when I started dating this very pretty guitar rock waif type, who I realised after about thirty seconds I absolutely hated. He was all whiskey and Nashville, sadness as art and drowning in an unpayable bar tab. Absolute wanker. I’d come home from visiting and just want to listen to the hardest, most abrasive electronic music I could muster. Sawtooth and square waves for me please! Nothing natural. I made a folder of music called ELECTROFUCK which I’d retreat into. A classic move of mine has always been to do the opposite of the thing I’m supposed to be doing, and then do it at absolute full tilt. It took me a while to find myself not disgusted by finding a middle point and just go in a vague opposite direction. HARDCORE ‘TIL I DIE, she said in 2005. She really meant it. Well anyway, ELECTROFUCK was the turning point where I started to say to myself that electronic music is not the devil, raves were not a waste of time and were SO much more than just mindless hedonistic drug benders (and even if they were, fuck it?), and that I owed it to myself to enjoy whatever I find enjoyable and not just do what is palatable to everyone else. I had drunk the Kool-Aid and in the process lost myself completely, and was now starting to find myself again. (Thanks, skinny man from the Valley. Your mediocre “anyway, here’s Wonderwall”-ness reawakened me. Go eat a sandwich.)
It’s now 2020 and I am rebuilding myself after the total and utter molecular disintegration of my being, kicked off by two years of Dr, K’s daily 911 calls.
I’ll say something about my own experience with Zyprexa and what I’d do differently with what I know now.
THIS LINE IS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY.
...and the truth is, there were probably no emergencies. I was never manic or in proper danger. I was an undiagnosed autistic person struggling with total lack of social support, an unsupportive family environment (a plate and a roof does not a supportive family make), and absolutely no assistance from anyone anywhere in making my way out. I was desperate, not dangerous. This is why I drank myself stupid for such a long time. The overarching message was “no one cares”. (It still is, but I’m angry enough now to let that fire me up.) Ummm, tl;dr? Don’t let yourself be overmedicated and moulded into something you’re not, but be grateful there’s always three numbers you can dial when things are really, truly, overwhelmingly out of control.
