one of my favorite semantic concepts is the descriptive / expressive dichotomy. you can have a word that’s purely descriptive [woman], and one that is purely expressive [ouch], or even a combination [bitch -- a woman with negative connotations]. Adam Croom has written a few articles on the mixed des./exp. types of slurs, which is helping me in my own research.

i went to the bank today to make a transfer.  the teller asked me what i was doing this weekend.  my response was nothing much, just hanging out with my cat.  :-)
