THE Voortrekkers Johan Georg (Org) Meyer and Hester Catharina Elizabeth (néé Mulder) came from Prince Albert with two wagons and made their way to the Transvaal in the early 1840’s.

Org sourced land and selected three farms, namely Klipriviersberg, Elandsfontein and Swartkoppies. The couple chose to live next to the Natal Spruit (today the open land on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter Street and Tenth Avenue, Alberton North).

Org asked another Voortrekker, Jacob Smith, to keep an eye on the farms, while he went back to Prince Albert to sell his farm there. He could not sell the land in the Cape and then decided to abandon it.

On his return, he decided to keep Smit as a neighbor and ceded Klipriviersberg to him.

When their son Johannes Petrus (Jan) Meyer was 13 years old in 1856, the family went back to visit their relatives in the Prince Albert district. During the return journey, Org died and was buried in Colesberg. The responsibility was on Jan’s shoulders to see the family safely back to the Transvaal. It rained heavily and they had to build rafts to pass over the rivers. The cattle had to be protected at night from wild animals and there was no dry wood for them to make fires.

In 1864 Jan Meyer married Christina Salomina Meyer (no relation) and set up house on land next to the Natalspruit, in the area now occupied by Alberton City.

Christina died on 31 July 1870 after the birth of their fourth daughter. She was buried in the farm cemetery that once lay next to the future Voortrekker Road. He re-purchased the farm Klipriviersberg for 500 pounds from Jacob’s Smit’s estate. In 1872 he married the widow Stephina Petronella Botha, born Strydom. The couple moved to Klipriviersberg.

The current farmhouse was erected in 1891 by the builder Kirton, who also built the Dutch Reformed Church in Heidelberg.

Jan Meyer’s widowed mother had remarried Abraham Viljoen. After Viljoen’s death in 1894, the farm Elandsfontein was divided between the Meyer children. Jan Meyer bought the areas now known as New Redruth, Randhart and Raceview. His brother Johan Georg (Org junior) bought the areas now known as Florentia and Verwoerd Park. The part of the farm that later became Alberton North, was given to the five Meyer daughters.

After the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, the Alberton Estate Syndicate of Germiston approached the Meyer family to buy land to establish a town, close enough to Johannesburg for work but outside the city. The land was sold for 20 000 pounds in 1904 and the new town named Alberton, after General Hennie Alberts, one of the members of the Syndicate.

Although Alberton was established in 1904, it was only proclaimed a township in 1909.

Alberton boasts the only family cemetery within a traffic circle in South Africa.

A boy by the name of Johannes Petrus Meyer bought 11 hectares of his father’s farm Elandsfontein at the age of 13. He built his house next to the Alberton spruit. When his wife died in, he decided to start a general store and built his farmhouse residence in 1890, which was miraculously left unharmed during the Anglo Boer War, and still stands today. Jan's brother took over the farm after his death. General Hennie Alberts purchased a portion of the farm Elandsfontein, and he decided on the name of Alberton.

The school Jan Meyer was named after the original farm owner. The affluent suburb of Meyersdal also refers to the family whose first farmhouse still stands today. Hennie Alberts Avenue in the suburb of Brackenhurst as well as the primary school Generaal Alberts is named after the town founder. The first official post office was opened in 1926. Street names in the Alberton North suburb were also renamed after Voortrekker heroes in 1938 to coincide with the 100 year commemoration of the Great Trek.

Development sprawled out into adjacent areas over the years, and today Alberton consists of 18 suburbs. Alberante, Verwoerdpark, Albertsdal, Alrode, Brackendowns, Brackenhurst, New Redruth, Eden Park, Florentia, Mayberry Park, Albermarle, Meyersdal, Alberton North, Palm Ridge, General Alberts Park, Randhart, Raceview, South Crest, Thokoza.

Alrode is Alberton's industrial suburb. Alrode, which is Alberton's industrial suburb, was established in 1943. One of the most notable industries to be established in the town during this time was CJ Fuchs (Pty) Ltd. Venturing into the production of domestic electrical appliances under licence from the American company Westing House Electric International, the business was relocated from central Johnnesburg to a newly-built, modern factory in Alrode in 1948. Until the mid-seventies, CJ Fuchs (Pty) Ltd would continue to grow into a multi-million Rand operation, employing thousands of people in several subsidiary companies within the group. After Carl Fuchs' death in April 1976, the company was sold to the then Barlow Rand. In 1973, he was also the first to be admitted as a Freeman of the Town of Alberton.

The construction of the Alberton Boulevard was a major development started in the late 1980s with the aim of converting a section of Voortrekker Road that runs past the Alberton City Shopping Mall into a pedestrian-friendly zone.

There are many well-established sports facilities and clubs for tennis, rugby, road running, boxing, wrestling, cricket, jukskei, netball, hockey, soccer, bowls, korfball and ring tennis in Alberton.

It is also home to the Reading Country Club and Golf Course.

Alberton was also home to the now defunct New Market Race Course, which is now a shopping mall.

Alberton borders on the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, located on Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park, Gauteng. This reserve is home to many wild animals, including zebra, red hartebeest, porcupines, black wildebeest, otters, blesbok, springbok, duiker and 170 bird species.

There are also Iron Age settlements dating from about 1500 and the ruins of a house built in 1850 by voortrekkerSarel Marais.

Something you must know about South African Art Paintings

South African art has always captured on the distinctiveflavour of the country, from the 4 000-year-old cave paintings of the San Bushmen – the widest collection of rock art in Africa – to the home-based theoretical art movement that jumped up as apartheid came to an end in the 1990s.

The San Bushmen, Africa’s erstwhile hunter-gatherers, survived in the enormous Drakensberg range of mountains from 4 000 years ago until they were thrown out by colonialists in the 19th century. Over a period of time, they created an enlarge pool of art on the walls of caves and rock shelters – the largest and most focused group of rock paintings in sub-Saharan Africa.

This dynamic collection of South African art painting prompted Unesco to inscribe the Drakensberg as a mixed natural and cultural world heritage site in 2000. The paintings, Unesco said, “represent the spiritual life of the San people” and are “outstanding both in quality and diversity of subject”.

“The San people lived in the mountainous Drakensberg area for more than four millennia, leaving behind them a corpus of outstanding rock art, which throws much light on their way of life and their beliefs,” according to UNESCO.During the early colonial era, white South African painting artists inclined to focus on depicting what they saw as a “fresh world”, in precise detail. Artists such as Thomas Baines travelled the country recording its flora, fauna, people and landscapes – a form of reporting for those back in the metropolis.

Towards the end of the 19th century, painters Jan Volschenk and Pieter Hugo Naude and the sculptor Anton van Wouw began to set up a locally rooted art. Their work – the first glimpse of an artistic vision that engaged with life as lived in South Africa – marked the moment the country began to capture its own national identity, with the 1910 Union of South Africa marking the formal end of the colonial era.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the Dutch-born painter JH Pierneefintroduced a coolly geometric responsiveness to the South African landscape; he also, in a way that nourished into Afrikaner nationalist ideology, discovered it bereft of human inhabitants.

By the 1930s, two women artists, Maggie Laubscher and Irma Stern, came with the techniques and sensibilities of post-impressionism and expressionism to South African art painting and mixed media on canvas art. Their strongcolour and composition, and extremely personal viewpoint, rather scandalised those with old-fashioned theories of acceptable art. Yet younger artists such as GregoireBoonzaier, Maud Sumner and Moses Kottler were rejoicing in this fresh spirit of cosmopolitanism.

Today, there many art galleries in Cape Town that boast of wonderful South African art paintings.

爆炸, bào zhà (Mandarin Chinese)

Translation: explosion

Chinese is a Sino-Tibetan macrolanguage (a dialect continuum consisting of different varieties that are distinct languages based the criterium of mutual intelligibility, but commonly referred to as a single language) with around 1 350 300 000 speakers that consists of 16 recognised languages, often referred to as dialects. Out of these, Mandarin Chinese is the largest, as 70% of Chinese speakers have it as their native language. The Beijing dialect of Mandarin forms the basis of Standard Chinese, which is the national language and taught in schools all over China.

Motivation 1: Super fun to say (BAO ZHA allows for some intense chest yells!!), lovely meaning, has become a joke among my friend group and our Chinese teacher thinks it's very funny

Motivation 2: Explode is an inherently funny word. Also me and my friends learned this word back in like Chinese ii (super early on, we were still learning basic grammar) and our Chinese teacher does not like it very much. Once they got in trouble for putting it in a presentation that was being graded for our ib myp certificate (international baccalaureate; bigshot honors program).

Aufhebung (German)

[ˈaʊ̯fˌheːbʊŋ]

Translation: There is no English equivalent; it can be translated as "to sublate", "to abolish", "to transcend", or "to supercede" (also "to pick up", "to raise", "to keep", "to preserve", "to end", "to annul", or "to pocket").

German is an Indo-European language belonging to the Germanic branch and spoken in Germany by 80 600 000 people and 133 250 000 people worldwide. Or is it? That is true for Standard German, which is part of the Continental West Germanic dialect continuum stretching from the Netherlands to Austria, and including High, Middle and Low German dialects as well as Dutch. Standard German is a High German variety (High German refers to dialects and languages in southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria). Parts of the continuum aren’t mutually intelligible, but sinch Standard German has been the writing norm for centuries and used in education, media and administration, people can understand each other anyway since some regional differences have mellowed in the last generations, although some Low German dialects in the north are closer to Dutch than High German dialects in southern Germany.

Motivation: It's a unique German word that's important for Marxist and Hegelian philosophy, conveying the idea of the death of something while still maintaining the old within the new; to simultaneously abolish while preserving.

The Beginning of Our Story: King’s Day 2019

Hi. Hello? Aaaaaah damn that's right. Hoi. Hallo Dag. Bonjour. Hola. Welcome to our very first blog post, man are we excited to get this baby up and running. We already have so many experiences and adventures to share and so many more in store. But we’ll start from the beginning.

Hayden and I had just landed on the other side of the world and we had absolutely no idea what the heck was going on. Scary? Beautiful? Overwhelming? Find out how we are doing settling into life on a continent where English is a second language and home is a different city every few days. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you and hope you enjoy our journey aaaalmost just as much as we are

Kings Day (formally Queen’s Day) was our first introduction into Europe. And did that make for one hell of a culture shock for me. Knowing full well I needed to learn some words, I had attempted to learn the basic greetings, numbers and manners. However, I could not have prepared myself for the confronting fact that unless I was directly speaking to someone, I had absolutely no clue what was being said around me. What. So. Ever. I walked into the streets and was overwhelmed by not only the number of people but mainly the fact that I could not hear any English. Anywhere. It finally dawned on me that we were 20, 000 miles away from home and this was our new way of life. Completely and utterly alone, but ready to face it together.

The first initial moments were a little bizarre and scary, to say the least. But as I settled into watching the mannerisms and tones in which they spoke, the sound was quite delightful. And when in Amsterdam, the native tongue is Dutch, which has this little high pitched tinge to it. It was a cheerful, overly joyful sound that I fell in love with.

Once I settled into our new environment, I began to take in the surroundings. And boy were they beautiful. I was awestruck by the beauty of the of the streets, littered with flowers and bicycles, by the quirkiness of the buildings, all iron balconies and sloping from hundreds of years since construction, by the age noticeable in the trees and flora, and especially by the cheerful Dutch people who were out in the thousands celebrating their heritage for King’s Day. The usual peaceful Amsterdam streets became a sea of orange as happy festival-goers donned themselves in anything and everything that showcased the colour of the monarchy. Orange – for the Dutch Royal family that bare's the house name ‘Oranje’. It has since become the National colour of the Netherlands and is also recognised as the global colour for Harmony. A special colour for a special day.

As we braved the crowded streets we found ourselves wandering deeper into a maze of buildings that were similar but so different. It was dizzying but amazing. We were herded by the direction of everyone else around us as we moved like salmon upstream. Shoulders and arms tight against the strangers nearest. The touch was almost a welcome contact, with the weather hitting a high of 13 degrees that day. But the Dutch feared not and partied on.

The footpaths were covered with tables and chairs. Makeshift beer stalls were everywhere, of course, you could also go indoors anywhere, as nearly everywhere was open. Ready to serve the close to a million people who descend on the Bicycle City each year. Celebrations are happening all over the Netherlands for this public holiday, but Amsterdam is most definitely the party hub.

The Dutch were boisterous and happy as they milled about completely content to be exactly where they were, whether that be amongst hundreds of others attempting to slide past or inside a crowded shop snacking on all the delicious food on offer. Man did those smells hit our noses. There was quite literally nearly every pastry and bread imaginable throughout the city, dishes from all cultures, hundreds of street vendors lining the squares and even makeshift cocktail stalls. Most stalls had their own speakers blasting their favourite tunes. It is an adult’s playground, with street parties on every corner. People walk past with a wiggle in their hip and a drink in their hand. The flow of the people grooves with one another as they make their way to the next location. But the parties not just on land. Nope. It’s everywhere your eyes can see. Hundreds take to boats and party down the canals. They are packed with young and old just having an absolute blast. But don’t forget to look up too! Because locals open up their windows and balconies throwing parties overlooking the craziness below. Your eyes will tire from wanting to look everywhere. But when it gets too much, no need to go home yet. Just simply escape into one of the many Coffee Shops for a more relaxed atmosphere. Taste some of the local delicacies and enjoy a hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. Take some time get your bearings again before you once again tackle the raging party outside.

Another special fact about King’s Day is that is the one day of the year that the public can set up stalls without a trading license. So be prepared for the literally thousands of locals all over the country ready to sell their no longer needed goods to a new home. Children are selling their beloved toys and books ready to upgrade and the parents are happily milling about with a watchful eye. Chatter and music become a familiar sound throughout the day.

I must admit I laughed when I saw my first public urinal. A red, plastic, four-person outdoor toilet smack bang in the middle of a crowded footpath. And it most definitely got used. So gentlemen, if you’re feeling brave there you go. And to my ladies, get ready to pay up. Because public toilets cost a pretty penny (50 cents to be exact) over here, no free relief I’m afraid.

I can’t say how wild the night gets, because once we came back to earth, we realized we had been wandering around happily lost in the city streets for hours. It was time for us to leave Amsterdam for the day and head Nord, back to the other side of town where there was still Dj’s, food stalls and parties, but it was just a little quieter. A little more our pace after such an eventful day. Our favourite thing about this location was the street artists the city had set up with spray paint and shipping containers to adorn however they saw fit. They were so incredibly talented it blew us away. True street art on show and not covered away.

All in all, King’s Day, or should I say Koningsdag, is a complete celebration of human togetherness. We are all there to enjoy one another and the atmosphere. 𝐁. 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐍𝐄 : 𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐋

PLEASE NOTE : this post deals more with the medical && firearm side of things && touches very little on fan theories ( such as : bethfoot , beth as the cure / being bitten , dawn not being the shooter ) , missing scenes ( such as the scene caught being filmed of beth driving away from grady or whatever was shot in the white houses ) parallels between characters , illusions , the cagey actions of cast && crew && is not meant to attempt to force anyone into believing that beth is still alive && return to the show . if you think she is completely dead , that is 100% okay . the main purpose of this post is to basically show i’m not attempting to make an impossible thing possible with my portrayal . everything covered in this post comes from people in the healthcare field && people knowledgeable in firearms as well as my own research .

LOCATION : contrary to popular belief , head shots are not automatic kills . depending on the angle of the shot ( something no one is sure of due to the use of dutch angles && theories that dawn is not the shooter ) it is entirely possible that the bullet curved along her skull && missed her brain entirely . in fact , the location of the entry wound is where , should you be shot in the head , you would want to be hit as the chance at survival && even minimum complications is high . even if the bullet did not curve , the parts of the brain potentially hit are not life threatening or even incredibly important compared to other areas && as the brain is remarkably elastic && able to heal itself , it’s possible surgery would not even be required .

if it was , indeed , dawn who pulled the trigger , it almost completely proves that the bullet curved at some point . given the low level of the gun , the bullet would have exited at the top of her head as opposed to the back . it is surprising , alone , that she managed to hit beth in the forehead instead of under the chin which , almost always , would lead to an instant kill shot .

THE BULLET : dawns weapon is a 9mm , one of the smallest shown on the show . small bullet means small entrance wound means small exit would . typically head shots on the show are a lot bloodier but they are often done with ricks gun which is a fucking monster . the smaller caliber also means smaller damage done . contrary to what a lot of people say , there is no brain matter when beth is shot . what you see if blood && likely bone from her skull . dawn , on the other hand , is turned into a mess . the caliber of daryls gun is larger so the wound is larger ( it is also possible that given what happened a moment or two before , his aim was a little off , his hand a little unsteady which would also cause great damage . )

the fact that there is an exit wound is a good thing , though it might not seem that way . it means that the bullet is not ricocheting around her skull , working to turn her brain to mush . that , certainly , would have killed her .

HEPARIN : beth was given at least one large dose of heparin at grady : when she wakes , there is a 1 ,000 ml/cc bag attached to her iv stand . heparin is an anticoagulant , a blood thinner && truthfully , there is no reason from what we have been given in terms of information for her to receive it . while it could potentially be used to prevent blood clots after a bone break , such breaks are typically found in the legs && while you could argue it is used for her arm , the type of cast used soft , padded , removable && replaced throughout her time at grady suggests that the injury on her arm is not that bad . even a fracture , as it is said to be , would require a different sort of cast as opposed to one designed for mobility .

the bag used is also suspect as it is abnormally large . while there are bags that large , they are typically used for acute stroke victims . beths fractured wrist && " superficial head wound “ would not warrant such a large dose , especially since grady is all about conserving precious resources . this fact helped cement the theory that beth had been bit && was grady’s attempt to find a cute that doesn’t involve amputation .

the use of heparin is also possibly the reason her facial injuries were so heavily stitched .

BLOOD : regardless of the heparin , there was very little blood for the type of injury sustained ( one theory is that it is not beths blood at all , but rather dawns ) which backs up the curved trajectory theory . head wounds are notorious for heavy blood flow , even a simply cut has the capability of making you look like a murderer or murder victim . however , the bleeding shown appears to be minimal which suggests clotting . in the handful of moments from the gunshot to seeing a glimpse of the body , the flow has slowed . by the ( odd , contorted ) positioning of beth post fall , we can see that the pool of blood is not that large at all .

this is further backed up by the view we get when daryl carries her out as well as bts footage . she is not soaked in blood as one would assume of a head shot . rather , there is blood on her forehead , the back of her head && very little on her clothes . for a show that seems to have attended the school of ‘ MORE BLOOD IS BETTER ’ this seems odd .

the slow of blood flow suggests clotting which , in turn suggests that she , at least at that point , is still alive . you do not clot when you are dead .

GRADY : when someone asks someone else with a knowledge of firearms or medicine their thoughts of this event , their first reaction tends to be that the injury is survivable && their second tends to be that even if it wasn’t , she was shot in the best possible place a miraculously operational hospital . while we don’t know the extent of their abilities && just how operational grady really is , we know there is medicine as well as a doctor , one who might feel so inclined to provide aid as a ) beth is not a threat to his position && b ) despite their problems , it seems as he was , to some degree , fond of her . at the very least , it is possible they might feel guilt over what happened .

with an injury such as hers already clotted , likely minimal to no swelling , an exit would meaning there is not chunk of metal chilling in her brain nor is there irreparable damage the most important things would be to clean the site && ensure there is no development of infection . all things that are capable of being done in even a minimally resourced hospital as long as there is someone with medical training .

it’s highly likely that , due to it being a head wound , no one thought to check for a pulse . it’s common , it happens . emotions are high , instincts tell you a wound like that is fatal , you’ve spent who knows how long protecting yourself && others with the same sort of attack . we know she was removed from the hospital but after is a mystery . immediately after , they skip ahead , set out with the intention of having us believe tyreese’s funeral is beths , something stated on live television .

there was word of a large herd in coda , nicotero himself stating that around 500 walkers were used . there’s several walkers deliberately made up to reference beth ( as well as tweets from grady actors about how they might be back , suspicious wording && actions from showrunners && other actors ) sparking a belief that she might have been left behind possibly in a car trunk judging by maggies reaction to finding a walker in the trunk of a car . while it is not ideal , it is not a death sentence . bodies are remarkably resilient when faced with trauma . if her head had truly clotted , it is entirely possible that her body would shut down to protect itself until help arrives so long as it does not take forever ,

if there had indeed been a herd , it’s possible they would have moved to follow the group . likely , an officer or two would have come to dispatch stragglers in order to keep the area open as it’s not near the elevator well where they’re shown to to use as a dump . should they have stumbled across her or even known she had been hidden && found a pulse they would have brought her inside for aid should it be possible . despite the things that went on within the hospital , there were people who seemed to genuinely care about helping others in need .

EFFECTS OF INJURY : depending on how the bullet moved inside of her skull , beth could face little to no brain related problems afterward . there would be no loss of motor skills , no loss of verbalization or ability to read or write . however , it is important to note that this is a traumatic injury && the brain will work to protect itself , which may manifest in different ways : amnesia of differing degrees , the switch from primarily verbal communication to write or physical , an increase in anger or violence , faulty facial recognition , etc . how long effects such as these last is never certain && may come && go demanding on the quality of life meaning being alone on the road would likely be worse than settling down with others who can aid her .

ideally , finding the group would be best toward further healing as the brain would recognize them && work to fill in the gaps , however it could also hurt && hinder depending on the reception given . aggravating her && attempting to force things could easily backfire . likely , the most effective way is to allow her her space to work through things on her own while ensuring that she has someone watching her without applying pressure .
