The last time I posted something about my backlog, it was just a quick thing about setting a record for myself. I figured I’d make this sort of thing regular, and give my thoughts on the games I play at the same time.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode

I’ve wanted to get into .hack ever since Kite and BlackRose made appearances as guest characters in Project X Zone all the way back in the early 3DS days. I can’t say that I regret this at all.

This collection lasted me about 50hrs. I will say though, that these games are best played in short bursts. Wailing on the enemies until they’re ready for you to use a Rengeki on them is fun, but it can get repetitive very fast. Combat itself doesn’t become as fun as it could be until Vol. 2, where you can actually change weapons without going into the menu.

As for the narrative, I found the setting of [The World] fascinating in concept, but not the best aged in terms of visuals. The characters however, were a delight the whole way. Haseo is a great protagonist in that, he’s an asshole, but not an unbearable asshole. If you enjoyed Neku in TWEWY, you’ll probably enjoy Haseo.

Star Ocean: First Departure R

Full disclosure: I got this game because it was on sale and the Sci-fi/fantasy vibes called to me.

If you don’t have a tolerance for older ARPGs, then you might want to avoid this one, as its age does begin to show. That said, it’s not nearly as ages as it might seem.

The skill system was very engrossing, with level ups and new skills happening very fast. There were a few difficulty spikes, but I feel like part of that was on me for not engaging with the item creation/customization until a little over halfway through.

Finishing this left me wanting more in the best way. I can’t wait for November and Star Ocean 2.

Trails in the Sky FC

My experience with the Trails series has been a little bit. . . Bumpy. As someone who only owns a Switch and an HP Notebook laptop, the series hasn’t exactly been very accessible. Near the start of my sophomore year of college, I downloaded and played a demo for Trails of Cold Steel 3. I was, to my mild surprise, only slightly lost about the world and characters. I enjoyed my time with Cold Steel 3 but that’s not what we’re here to talk about. After finishing that game, I decided to play as much of the series as I could before diving into Cold Steel 4. This was my first step for this.

The Trails series’ reputation for deep world building is entirely deserved. I was surprised at how much space this game’s world has. As an example: there’s an orbment shop in one of the towns where a third story counter can be seen. There’s no reason to go there, not even any sidequests, but if you talk to the NPC there, he’ll explain that the third story is where they handle repair requests. It’s a small detail, and the developers didn’t have to make that extra room, but they did, and the world feels more real because of it. Even the magic-science techno-babble tends to make a degree of sense!

The gameplay is as solid as you could want from a turn-based rpg. The Arts and Crafts are great levers, and I never felt too weak for the enemies in any given area. It took me a while to realize that Arts using two turns was a benefit rather than a drawback. Using the cast times to manipulate the turn order is great fun.

I will say though, that I miss the additions of Master Quarts and Breaks that later games brought to the series. They’re not quite necessary, but they did bring a lot of good to the series.

Charting through the rest of the series is going to be a blast if this game is any indication!

Starting off with... the fairly obvious.

AI: The Somnium Files

This murder mystery VN full of dirty jokes, puns and references to other media as well as mentions of urban legends has changed my life for worse. Play it!

Digimon World Next Order

This is a vpet/RPG hybrid where you have to look after two Digimon partners while also exploring the Digital World and recruiting Digimon to rebuild a city. It's on the grindier side but once you get the hang of everything it gets rather addicting. The PC version features a run button and a beginner mode, something the PSVita and PS4 versions didn't have.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition. This is a collection of PS2 esque traditional turnbased RPGs. Like Next Order, these are on the grindy side but the grinding is extremely satisfying and building the optimal Digimon team is a lot of fun. Also great to play while doing something like listening to podcasts.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode

A remastered HD collection of PS2 RPGs featuring a brand new and original fourth episode unique to this collection. These games are are actually set in an MMORPG and you play as the protag's player avatar, Haseo. Track down the mysterious Tri-Edge and unravel the mysteries of The World.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

A collection of two classic scrimblo 2D platformers remakes, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa: Lunatea's Veil. Cute visuals, simple yet engaging gameplay, catchy music and stories which may or may not make you cry.

NieR Automata

BECOME AS GODS

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

A really cool and fun action RPG with visuals that aged REALLY well. An all around classic with a fun protagonist.

BlazBlue Centralfiction

A really fun 2D anime fighter with lots and lots of characters and tons of mechanics, now also with rollback!

Super Kiwi 64

(I know this game is rather cheap when not on sale to begin with but I'm plugging it anyway shhh)

This is a cute and fun bite sized 3D platformer that harkens back to 90s platformers, particularly the Nintendo 64 ones. The movement is really tight and fun and the game takes around an hour or so to 100%. Highly recommended for quick breaks between huge games!

Snake Pass

An unconventional 3D platformer in which you don't jump and maneuver through the air with complicated movements but instead slide, crawl and climb as a snake. With beautiful visuals, cute and colorful characters, unconventional but fun gameplay as well as music by David Wise, you can't go wrong with this one!

.Hack//G.U. Begins 

A manga recap released for the Nintendo Switch version of .Hack//G.U. The manga is broken up into 3 sections: SIGN, IMOQ, and Roots. You can find it on the Bamco site here: https://www.bandainamcoent.com/landing/hack-gu-begins-manga

.Hack//SIGN

-I like the art style, even though it looks kind of sketchy and unfinished. They managed to make Sora look hot which is no small feat lol. 

-Listening to the SIGN OST reading this was very nostalgic. I think I’ll always feel the most connected to SIGN and its characters compared to the later entries in the franchise. 

-The fact that they treat player killing like this horrific act is a little hard to take seriously. I feel like if a game has that mechanic and is full of hormonal teens/preteens, it would be pretty commonplace. I guess that’s Japanese politeness for you...

-It’s interesting reading something written after everything has already come out. They drew Sora knowing he’d become Haseo and it kinda shows. I can see this Sora turning into Haseo way more than I can see anime!Sora becoming Haseo.

-I can never get enough of seeing Tsukasa and Subaru being cute together, so I’m glad they had Sora react to that. 

-Not Sora having the sad Naruto flashback where nobody likes him lol. I would have really loved to have seen more IRL Ryou, both as a kid and a teen. It would especially be interesting to see what the heck he was doing when he went through his batshit crazy phases online. 

.Hack//

-Funny how this section is just called “.Hack//” I guess they never really gave it an overarching name, huh...

-Omg it’s the .Hack//Zero version of Sora! I didn’t even think about the fact that Ryou was in SIGN and G.U. but not IMOQ. (Unless you count Skeith). Really interested to see where things go from here since I never read Zero. 

-Lol @ Sora’s “there’s nothing special about Kite, he just has an off-spec bracelet.” Yeah, pretty much. (I’ve never liked Kite). 

-I appreciated the callback comparing Tsukasa gaining strength from Subaru to Kite and BlackRose. It’s annoying that the anti-social Sora has to learn a generic “power of friendship/love” lesson, but the continuity is nice. 

-The “Ryou was there the whole time as a ghost!” thing is interesting, but iirc Haseo has no memory of when he was Sora, right? I wonder how this manga will handle that...(Edit: this section ends with him getting the amnesia). 

-Oh my God, they managed to throw an “apoptosis” mention in there...of course

-Cool to see all the random background party members in this art style. Kinda a shame they didn’t do more with some of these characters. The designs were so good! 

.Hack//Roots

-Reading this in quick succession makes me wonder. Did Ovan know about Sora and what happened with him and Morganna? I can’t really remember why he latched onto Haseo so intensely. (Only other explanation would be gay lol).

-Honestly, Ovan and Shino were made for each other. Both annoyingly cryptic and “cool” in that dumb anime way. I wonder if anyone out there ships them...

-Even though I don’t ship them, Shino and Haseo do make a handsome couple. I appreciated their heart-to-heart in chapter 3. Felt like a real conversation instead of a bunch of vague catchphrases. (Also we get to see blushy Haseo hehe)

-I can’t take Shino’s tear drop tattoo seriously. I know it’s just supposed to be a fantasy thing, but I just think “oh, so she’s killed someone before” 

-This section wraps up on my least favorite parts of the Roots/G.U. saga: Haseo’s rage monster phase. And of course Ovan comes back to be annoying too. Bleh. Ah well. I can definitely see the value in putting something like this out for people who don’t have time to watch SIGN, Roots and play IMOQ before jumping into G.U. It’s also nice to see some plot points from a new POV and with a new art style. Probably wouldn’t read this again, but I had fun taking a stroll down memory lane.

Problematic Toxicity in Another World

It’s no secret I enjoy the Isekai genre. I find the sheer creative potential of such staggering, fish-out-of-water, narratives to be absolutely captivating. You can craft some wildly entertaining stories in this genre like TenSura and Overlord. I’ve spoken of my love for the .Hack games, specifically the G.U. franchise and those are basically Isekai before it had a proper name. .Hack was kind of my very first foray into the genre. I flirted with other titles like Escaflowne and Magic Knight Rayearth but it was the very first .Hack quadrilogy that sold me on the idea of being spirited away. Isekai isn’t a new genre by any means but it has exploded in popularity over the last decade or so. The aforementioned TenSura and Overlord are standouts from the Tens but so many more found an audience over the course of the last few years. KonSuba, No Game No Life, Gate, Saga of Tanya the Evil, and Re:Zero are excellent examples. Tanya the Evil, specifically, is one of my favorites. I think it’s legitimately one of the most creative takes on the genre, outside of Uncle from Another World. Suffice it to say, there are classics in this new wave of Isekai and I've loved watching the content get it’s due. It’s been a slog getting from Familiar of Zero and Geminar to something as elaborate as Grimgar or as endearing as The Devil is a Part-Timer! It’s unfortunate that level of creative approach has fallen by the wayside in this new decade.

The sh*t dropping lately is wildly problematic and egregiously underwhelming. Gone is the meticulous world-building we got in Overlord or the intricate systems which trigger my inner Virgo that drive TenSura. What we have instead are a bunch of problematic ass slave harem narratives and grotesque revenge fantasies that are permeated with the cringiest sex scenes you’ll ever have the displeasure of experiencing outside of EL James. Now, don’t misunderstand me, I'm no prude or some easily offended SJW. Some of my favorite anime are straight up problems. When They Cry, School Days, Elfen Lied, and Yosuga No Sora are counted among my choice picks so, understand, i get down on f*cked up sh*t pretty regularly. For a while there, during my late teens/early twenties, when i was peak edgy, almost exclusively. The more f*cked up, the better. Boku no Pico is tame compared to some of the sh*t i’ve seen. But I'm older now and have a much more evolved ability to discern gratuitous for gratuitous sake, shock for the sake of shock, and shock as a means to convey horror. What we have lately, is just shock for the sake of shock. Sex for the sake of sex. And i get it, sexy controversy sells, but at least try to craft an interesting tale to go around that f*ckery, you know? No one is doing anything interesting with it. No one is making these very contentious themes impactful. They’re just there to illicit cheap, superficial, responses and that sucks. It’s lazy writing and it frustrates the f*ck out of me because it doesn’t have to be. Rising of the Shield Hero proves that.

Naofumi’s Grand Misadventure in Another World is, paradoxically, the best at this type of narrative but the cause of why so many sub-par attempts are being made. When the Shield Hero anime originally released, it got SO much flack because of Raphtalia. She was an underage Tanuki-girl who was bought as a slave by Naofumi. Every one hyper-focused on how problematic that single aspect was, never once looking deeper into the relationship, itself, or why Naofumi gave her the slave brand to begin with. In reality, their relationship, so far, is strictly platonic. Naofumi legitimately thinks of Raphtalia as his daughter, much to her personal chagrin, but that doesn’t matter to those who outrage professionally. Never mind that the story, itself, is nuanced, layered, and just generally dope. Never mind that the characters are as rich as the world being presented. Never mind that Shield Hero is one of the best reads to come out of the last decade. None of that matters because “slave” is a bad word. I get that. I’m a black dude so i DEFINITELY get that but slave does not equal brutality in Naofumi’s case. Slave means family in kind of a roundabout way. But, just like the Twatter Checkmarks who decided to cancel this narrative before it could even get a footing here in the States, the industry decided that the slave part was the profitable aspect and we got sh*t like Slave Harem in the Labyrinth of the Other World.

Full transparency, i am a huge fan of the Slave Harem manga. I highly recommend checking it out where you can because it is a considerably different beast than the anime. It’s odd as f*ck because i genuinely adore the book but i kind of hate the show? Like, i got three episodes in and dropped it. The issue i have with Slave Harem is the actual focus on f*cking. Again, not a prude or anything, but just the borderline pornographic scenes that riddle almost every episode are a bit much. The boob physics are amazing but, goddamn, dude, you, like, OWN this chick, you know? Roxanne literally can’t say “No” under penalty of pain or death. And Michio definitely takes advantage of that sh*t in the most uncomfortable way possible. In the manga, you might get a chapter of sordid shenanigans or a few panels hare and there but these are often just rather explicit examples fan service, easily passed over. Not in the goddamn anime. This sh*t is right there, in your face, and is obviously the point of the entire show. Production values skyrocket in fight scenes for other anime but not in Slave Harem. Nope, them extra dollars are allocated to f*cking and you absolutely see every cent on screen. It’s a goddamn shame because, on the page, Slave Harem has a rather meticulously crafted world to explore. The naughty bits don’t overshadow that excellent writing but in the show? Nah, man. You are here for f*cking and that’s it. What’s wild to think about, however, is the fact that, as ridiculous as Slave Harem is, the sh*t is tame in comparison to other adaptions!

Redo of Healer is a whole ass exercise in sexual coercion and straight up rape. Like, the entire show is based around rape. Everyone gets raped. The protagonist is constantly getting raped. Dude goes back in time to exact his revenge for getting raped, which just ends up being more rape and extra murder. One such circumstance of said revenge was where his target was basically raped to death. Redo of Healer is everything wrong with modern Isekai anime, though it’s closer to the Reincarnation sub-genre. I count it as an Isekai because it follows the same beats. Again, i want to reiterate that i am more than down for f*cked up sh*t but this? This is gross. Seriously, there is a way to go about this and still have all of the f*cked up, edgelord, nonsense without just being blatant, pandering, transparently woman hating, drivel, you know? I feel like a broken record but Shield Hero does what Redo wants to do, much better and much more tastefully. If you want that brutality, however, i would suggest Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku. That sh*t is absolutely f*cking tragic, graphically brutal, and a masterwork of story telling. It’s what Redo wishes it could be and it did it twenty years earlier.

I know this reads as kind of wishy-washy or like I'm fence-sitting because of my overall acceptance of more contentious aspects of anime in general, and i accept that, but i can’t help but feel the way i do because the sh*t coming out is just so goddamn lazy. Even Sword Art Online, the show that kicked of this entire Isekai craze, is not immune to the same pedestrian (and kind of desperate) execution of these very rape-y, very problematic, tropes. I’ve seen so many shows do this stuff better, even the more alarming aspects of the content. I’ve read stories that execute these same plot points so  much more coherently. It’s fine to have a tit or two in your story, just don’t make it the focus. It’s fine to have a rape scene or two, just don’t build around it as the main motivation of your protagonist. You can have a consenting harem around your self insert, there is an entire genre based on this sh*t, so why do they have to be slaves? Why does every interaction have to be colored with subjugation? Why is the industry just okay with what this says about the people they are catering to with these narratives? It’s mad frustrating to me because i have seen so much anime, read so much manga, and the current state of one of my favorite genres is just slave tits and rape. It’s f*cking disheartening. At least Roxanne is really hot, i guess?

The fact that Europe gets no real .hack love baffles me since America got the G.U. Last Recode Begins edition for the Switch and we basically only got a digital version says a lot. Man one of the reasons why I hate living in Europe.

So anywho I'm sitting here thinking about .hack//g.u. and how the game starts out following a very emotionally immature (bi-disaster) teen who was emotionally manipulated by the adults he looked up to and had a crush on and how they took advantage of him. And then poor Atoli who was a depressed kid who kept gravitating towards toxic and abusive relationships (yeah Haseo was trash to her in the beginning) because she valued her self worth so little and was on a suicide board and my god. Also did anyone ever talk about Yata back in the day with him also actually being a child who couldn't connect with others and was kind of closed off emotionally and would constantly present himself as an adult because of that and fjjdjdjdjd
