"ECLIPSE" is the pre-debut project by Y/N – known more popularly as EXILE HER – in order to introduce her to the k-pop scene. the project began in JANUARY 2017 and would continue until FEBRUARY 2018. the project was created by KWON GYEONG, who had personally hand-picked y/n for this project.

gyeong stated in an interview that she, "...watched y/n perform and compete on PRODUCE 101, and i immediately knew that she was the perfect face for this project that i had been working on." y/n was already gaining some fame after placing 14th in the survival show, and gyeong was quick to recruit y/n to KQ from her original company SOURCE MUSIC. by the end of 2016, y/n would begin training at kq entertainment after leaving source music.

along with gyeong, the producer team EDENARY would also help with the eclipse project when it came to producing and composing music. the project would be split up into four different parts with each part being divided by a four colors: RED, WHITE, BLACK, and YELLOW.

on FEBRUARY 11, 2018, a full album was released the contained all the songs from the projects into one including six other new songs. the album was simply titled ECLIPSE. a music video was released for the song MY NEVERLAND as well which helped tie up the story. the music video ended with a morse code which fans deciphered as "exile her." this would later be revealed to be y/n's stage name once she debuted.

manga reads, week two

this week, i spent a lot of time in the mangaplus app.

01. bug ego / バグエゴ by ONE (story), shitara kiyoto (art) demographic: seinen genre: comedy, mystery, supernatural rating: 10/10 summary: the new guy in town, hitsujiya meets classmate kukudou, a weird kid with an even weirder notebook detailing various "bugs" in the universe -- phenonema where a certain konami code of actions (e.g. pressing vending machine buttons in a certain order) yield strange outcomes. hitsujiya gets addicted to these bugs, and it's all fun and games -- until it isn't. notes: easy favorite of the week. chapter two is a goddamn masterpiece. ONE, i beg -- follow your heart. stop writing battle shonen and write more of whatever this is.

02. ruri dragon / ルリドラゴン by masaoki shindo demographic: shonen genre: slice of life, iyashikei rating: 8/10 summary: A half-human, half-dragon girl lives a normal life as best she can while her dragon powers awaken. notes: it's just really charming. you will be healed by this.

03. ichi the witch / madan no ichi / 魔男のイチ by nishi osamu (story), usazaki shiro (art) demographic: shonen genre: fantasy, action rating: 7/10 summary: Ichi is a talented hunter who lives in solitude on the mountain. One day, he saves the world's strongest witch from harm by using his hunting skill to defeat the king of magic -- and in the process, accidentally becomes a witch himself. notes: as might be expected from a team up between the creator of mairimashita! iruma-kun and the artist of act-age, the highlight of this work is the imaginative and diverse character designs. 20 or so chapters in, i think this work has a lot of potential. it'd be so cool and fun if wsj execs kept this one around.

04. asura's verdict / asura no sata / アスラの沙汰 by unohana utsugi demographic: shonen genre: drama, psychological, gore rating: 3.5/10 summary: Inspired by his late mother's teachings, Asura tries to live life with a smile, even as terrible things happen to him, because the universe will send people where they belong. One day, his world view is upended when he's presented with the mysterious power to send people to hell himself. notes: Jury's out on whether this is headed in a Death Note or a Brutal direction. It seems like it'll be the former, but I don't think the writing will yield as interesting a social commentary as DN.

05. apple by amano youichi (art), shirai kaiu (story) demographic: shonen genre: action, gore rating: 7.5/10 summary: Captured by the president, assassin Apple must escape by any means necessary to enact his revenge. notes: i think this story would be more satisfying with more pages or serialization. that said, the assassin's powers and the plot twist about president bruno were really fucking cool. for whom this is relevant -- the story comes from the writer of the promised neverland.

06. beyond the screen / glass-goshi no koibito / ガラス越しの恋人 by yano keito demographic: shonen genre: drama, romance rating: 6.5/10 summary: Shoko meats Ukai on a dating app, and everything's going great -- until they realize they're in parallel worlds. notes: short and sweet oneshot with satisfying conclusions for both leads. the art wasn't my favorite.

07. the mountain of remains on planet triangle / sankakuboshi no horobi no yama / さんかく星の滅びの山 by togawa harutarou demographic: shonen genre: sci-fi rating: 7/10 summary: Tongari and the other triangles live peacefully on a remote planet, scavenging the buried bones of a previous civilization. One day, a human rises from the ash. notes: aww that's cute hahaha haha ha--... hey what the fuck.

08. takahashi from the bike shop / jitenshaya-san no takahashi-kun / 自転車屋さんの高橋くん by matsumushi arare demographic: josei (kind of. this was a web comic picked up by torch magazine) genre: romance rating: 8/10 summary: 30-year-old Panko struggles through the tumult of office life. After a particularly rough week, even her bicycle breaks down. Luckily, a stranger, Takahashi, helps her out. As she encounters him again and again, she finds her world brightening. notes: this manga has a lot that i love: adult cast with adult problems, quirky art, chemistry between the leads, lovable delinquent characters, and bicycles.

Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 22

Periodic Rookie Group Reports are a series of biannual reports that seek to put a number to how many rookie groups debut and make comebacks in a given year. For Report No. 22, I cover the activity of '22 rookie groups between July and December 2023 and the total number of rookie groups that debuted in 2023.

2022 Rookies In the previous Rookie Report, I covered five groups that had debuted in 2022, only to disband less than a year after their debut. I have two additional groups to add to that list. They are as follows: 

WSG Wannabe: A project girl group (July ‘22) created for MBC’s Hangout With Yoo, the group concluded their activities following the show’s August 6th, 2022 episode.

X4: The project co-ed group (July ‘22) was formed to promote Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo. Following voting on November 28, 2023, Busan ultimately lost its bid to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Consequently, it is safe to assume that the group disbanded.

This brings the number of disbanded groups to seven—two boy groups, four girl groups, and one co-ed group. Factoring these seven groups brings the number of groups that debuted in 2022 and were still active in 2023 to 69 groups—20 boy groups, 37 girl groups, and two co-ed groups. Of these 69 groups, 52% or 36 groups released new music at least once in 2023. 34% or 24 groups did so between January and June, while 17% or 12 groups did so between July and December. 30% or 21 groups released new music in the first and second half of 2023.

2023 Rookies In 2023, 95 groups—44 boy groups, 46 girl groups, four co-ed groups, and one queer group—debuted. Compared to last year this marks a 25% increase in the number of new groups debuting. Similarly, boy groups, whose numbers had been declining since 2020, made an about-face, with a 100% increase in the number of new debuts versus last year. Meanwhile, girl groups, who posted a record-setting number last year, saw a small decline slipping 10%. For their part, co-ed groups saw a modest increase from three groups last year to four groups this year, a 33% change.

Yet even with girl group numbers taking a dip, these are some of the best year-end numbers for rookie groups the industry has seen in years. Certainly, the numbers have not been this good since the beginning of the pandemic. So, what changed?

As always with rookie group numbers, context matters. Technically, rookie group numbers did rebound because agencies began to debut more groups, but what is meant by groups has expanded. That is, while once the dominant image of an idol group was a group assembled by an agency created from trainees who had been under and remained with a company for years striving for stardom, that has now changed. As I have written about at length, Rainbow E&M intends for their Future Idol Asia groups to be temporary stops for members rather than their permanent groups. Meanwhile, university k-pop departments, like Howon University in Gunsan, have been debuting their groups. Similarly, television shows have also served as an unconventional conduit for minting new, often temporary, groups. And this is all to say nothing about the recent influx of virtual and "AI" groups that have become part of the industry.

To give this a number, around 40% of the groups that debuted in 2023 qualify as idol groups under this broader definition. Looking to the next year, I expect to see a similar number or more, given that survival shows, Future Idol Asia project and virtual idols are not going anywhere in 2024. Beyond that only time will tell if this is the product of convergence of multiple trends or a fundamental shift in the industry.

Miscellaneous stats:

January saw the most amount of debuts with the debut of 13 new groups: five boy groups and eight girl groups.

Once again, December saw the least amount of debuts with the debut of only three new groups.

For the fourth consecutive year, more girl groups debuted than boy groups.

(G)I-dle [(여자)아이들] is a K-pop girl group made up of five members: Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Yuqi, and Shuhua. They debuted officially on 2 May 2018, with the EP I Am. The group is formed by CUBE Entertainment company and the official name of their fandom is "Neverland".

Talking of Hauntology - PNL can make us look over for "what went wrong/what could be//get better", this is, speaking figuratively. Many projects and arts envisioned our "future"s, now long-gone (1800s, 1900s, 1950s-1980s ~ y2k).

The original stage production of Peter Pan took place at the Duke of York Theatre, London, on 27 December 1904.

It starred Gerald du Maurier as Captain Hook (doubling up as Mr Darling) and Mr Darling, and Nina Boucicault as Peter.

Following the success of his London production, Barrie's producer, Charles Frohman, took it to Broadway in New York in 1905 where Maude Adams took on the role for over ten years.

It was still traditional in the early 20th century for the part of young boys to be played by a woman although the tradition is gradually being lost, with male actors being cast as Peter Pan in modern productions.

Tinker Bell was represented by a darting light and voiced by bells - although "Jane Wren" was listed in the original productions as the actress playing Tink. This was a joke which fooled HM Inspector of Taxes who sent Miss Jane Wren a tax demand!

Fairy dust enabling you to fly was introduced later, to deter children from trying to fly from their beds or even windows, following reports of accidents!

The script was constantly rewritten, amended and added to by Barrie until it was  published in 1928 in its final form, years after the novelised version Peter and Wendy (1911).

But the directions to Neverland have never changed:

Peter Pan continues to play at theatres all over the world to this day, there are also numerous film versions in different guises.
