"ECLIPSE" is the pre-debut project by Y/N – known more popularly as EXILE HER – in order to introduce her to the k-pop scene. the project began in JANUARY 2017 and would continue until FEBRUARY 2018. the project was created by KWON GYEONG, who had personally hand-picked y/n for this project.

gyeong stated in an interview that she, "...watched y/n perform and compete on PRODUCE 101, and i immediately knew that she was the perfect face for this project that i had been working on." y/n was already gaining some fame after placing 14th in the survival show, and gyeong was quick to recruit y/n to KQ from her original company SOURCE MUSIC. by the end of 2016, y/n would begin training at kq entertainment after leaving source music.

along with gyeong, the producer team EDENARY would also help with the eclipse project when it came to producing and composing music. the project would be split up into four different parts with each part being divided by a four colors: RED, WHITE, BLACK, and YELLOW.

on FEBRUARY 11, 2018, a full album was released the contained all the songs from the projects into one including six other new songs. the album was simply titled ECLIPSE. a music video was released for the song MY NEVERLAND as well which helped tie up the story. the music video ended with a morse code which fans deciphered as "exile her." this would later be revealed to be y/n's stage name once she debuted.

this week, i spent a lot of time in the mangaplus app.

01. bug ego / バグエゴ by ONE (story), shitara kiyoto (art) demographic: seinen genre: comedy, mystery, supernatural rating: 10/10 summary: the new guy in town, hitsujiya meets classmate kukudou, a weird kid with an even weirder notebook detailing various "bugs" in the universe -- phenonema where a certain konami code of actions (e.g. pressing vending machine buttons in a certain order) yield strange outcomes. hitsujiya gets addicted to these bugs, and it's all fun and games -- until it isn't. notes: easy favorite of the week. chapter two is a goddamn masterpiece. ONE, i beg -- follow your heart. stop writing battle shonen and write more of whatever this is.

02. ruri dragon / ルリドラゴン by masaoki shindo demographic: shonen genre: slice of life, iyashikei rating: 8/10 summary: A half-human, half-dragon girl lives a normal life as best she can while her dragon powers awaken. notes: it's just really charming. you will be healed by this.

03. ichi the witch / madan no ichi / 魔男のイチ by nishi osamu (story), usazaki shiro (art) demographic: shonen genre: fantasy, action rating: 7/10 summary: Ichi is a talented hunter who lives in solitude on the mountain. One day, he saves the world's strongest witch from harm by using his hunting skill to defeat the king of magic -- and in the process, accidentally becomes a witch himself. notes: as might be expected from a team up between the creator of mairimashita! iruma-kun and the artist of act-age, the highlight of this work is the imaginative and diverse character designs. 20 or so chapters in, i think this work has a lot of potential. it'd be so cool and fun if wsj execs kept this one around.

04. asura's verdict / asura no sata / アスラの沙汰 by unohana utsugi demographic: shonen genre: drama, psychological, gore rating: 3.5/10 summary: Inspired by his late mother's teachings, Asura tries to live life with a smile, even as terrible things happen to him, because the universe will send people where they belong. One day, his world view is upended when he's presented with the mysterious power to send people to hell himself. notes: Jury's out on whether this is headed in a Death Note or a Brutal direction. It seems like it'll be the former, but I don't think the writing will yield as interesting a social commentary as DN.

05. apple by amano youichi (art), shirai kaiu (story) demographic: shonen genre: action, gore rating: 7.5/10 summary: Captured by the president, assassin Apple must escape by any means necessary to enact his revenge. notes: i think this story would be more satisfying with more pages or serialization. that said, the assassin's powers and the plot twist about president bruno were really fucking cool. for whom this is relevant -- the story comes from the writer of the promised neverland.

06. beyond the screen / glass-goshi no koibito / ガラス越しの恋人 by yano keito demographic: shonen genre: drama, romance rating: 6.5/10 summary: Shoko meats Ukai on a dating app, and everything's going great -- until they realize they're in parallel worlds. notes: short and sweet oneshot with satisfying conclusions for both leads. the art wasn't my favorite.

07. the mountain of remains on planet triangle / sankakuboshi no horobi no yama / さんかく星の滅びの山 by togawa harutarou demographic: shonen genre: sci-fi rating: 7/10 summary: Tongari and the other triangles live peacefully on a remote planet, scavenging the buried bones of a previous civilization. One day, a human rises from the ash. notes: aww that's cute hahaha haha ha--... hey what the fuck.

08. takahashi from the bike shop / jitenshaya-san no takahashi-kun / 自転車屋さんの高橋くん by matsumushi arare demographic: josei (kind of. this was a web comic picked up by torch magazine) genre: romance rating: 8/10 summary: 30-year-old Panko struggles through the tumult of office life. After a particularly rough week, even her bicycle breaks down. Luckily, a stranger, Takahashi, helps her out. As she encounters him again and again, she finds her world brightening. notes: this manga has a lot that i love: adult cast with adult problems, quirky art, chemistry between the leads, lovable delinquent characters, and bicycles.

Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 22

Periodic Rookie Group Reports are a series of biannual reports that seek to put a number to how many rookie groups debut and make comebacks in a given year. For Report No. 22, I cover the activity of '22 rookie groups between July and December 2023 and the total number of rookie groups that debuted in 2023.

2022 Rookies In the previous Rookie Report, I covered five groups that had debuted in 2022, only to disband less than a year after their debut. I have two additional groups to add to that list. They are as follows: 

WSG Wannabe: A project girl group (July ‘22) created for MBC’s Hangout With Yoo, the group concluded their activities following the show’s August 6th, 2022 episode.

X4: The project co-ed group (July ‘22) was formed to promote Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo. Following voting on November 28, 2023, Busan ultimately lost its bid to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Consequently, it is safe to assume that the group disbanded.

This brings the number of disbanded groups to seven—two boy groups, four girl groups, and one co-ed group. Factoring these seven groups brings the number of groups that debuted in 2022 and were still active in 2023 to 69 groups—20 boy groups, 37 girl groups, and two co-ed groups. Of these 69 groups, 52% or 36 groups released new music at least once in 2023. 34% or 24 groups did so between January and June, while 17% or 12 groups did so between July and December. 30% or 21 groups released new music in the first and second half of 2023.

2023 Rookies In 2023, 95 groups—44 boy groups, 46 girl groups, four co-ed groups, and one queer group—debuted. Compared to last year this marks a 25% increase in the number of new groups debuting. Similarly, boy groups, whose numbers had been declining since 2020, made an about-face, with a 100% increase in the number of new debuts versus last year. Meanwhile, girl groups, who posted a record-setting number last year, saw a small decline slipping 10%. For their part, co-ed groups saw a modest increase from three groups last year to four groups this year, a 33% change.

Yet even with girl group numbers taking a dip, these are some of the best year-end numbers for rookie groups the industry has seen in years. Certainly, the numbers have not been this good since the beginning of the pandemic. So, what changed?

As always with rookie group numbers, context matters. Technically, rookie group numbers did rebound because agencies began to debut more groups, but what is meant by groups has expanded. That is, while once the dominant image of an idol group was a group assembled by an agency created from trainees who had been under and remained with a company for years striving for stardom, that has now changed. As I have written about at length, Rainbow E&M intends for their Future Idol Asia groups to be temporary stops for members rather than their permanent groups. Meanwhile, university k-pop departments, like Howon University in Gunsan, have been debuting their groups. Similarly, television shows have also served as an unconventional conduit for minting new, often temporary, groups. And this is all to say nothing about the recent influx of virtual and "AI" groups that have become part of the industry.

To give this a number, around 40% of the groups that debuted in 2023 qualify as idol groups under this broader definition. Looking to the next year, I expect to see a similar number or more, given that survival shows, Future Idol Asia project and virtual idols are not going anywhere in 2024. Beyond that only time will tell if this is the product of convergence of multiple trends or a fundamental shift in the industry.

Miscellaneous stats:

January saw the most amount of debuts with the debut of 13 new groups: five boy groups and eight girl groups.

Once again, December saw the least amount of debuts with the debut of only three new groups.

For the fourth consecutive year, more girl groups debuted than boy groups.

(G)I-dle [(여자)아이들] is a K-pop girl group made up of five members: Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Yuqi, and Shuhua. They debuted officially on 2 May 2018, with the EP I Am. The group is formed by CUBE Entertainment company and the official name of their fandom is "Neverland".

The original stage production of Peter Pan took place at the Duke of York Theatre, London, on 27 December 1904.

It starred Gerald du Maurier as Captain Hook (doubling up as Mr Darling) and Mr Darling, and Nina Boucicault as Peter.

Following the success of his London production, Barrie's producer, Charles Frohman, took it to Broadway in New York in 1905 where Maude Adams took on the role for over ten years.

It was still traditional in the early 20th century for the part of young boys to be played by a woman although the tradition is gradually being lost, with male actors being cast as Peter Pan in modern productions.

Tinker Bell was represented by a darting light and voiced by bells - although "Jane Wren" was listed in the original productions as the actress playing Tink. This was a joke which fooled HM Inspector of Taxes who sent Miss Jane Wren a tax demand!

Fairy dust enabling you to fly was introduced later, to deter children from trying to fly from their beds or even windows, following reports of accidents!

The script was constantly rewritten, amended and added to by Barrie until it was  published in 1928 in its final form, years after the novelised version Peter and Wendy (1911).

But the directions to Neverland have never changed:

Peter Pan continues to play at theatres all over the world to this day, there are also numerous film versions in different guises.

Ding-dungg-ding-dungg-dung-dungg-ding-dunggg

On a bright yet cool sunny day, the 17-year-old science students of HaByeol High had to stay back until 6pm for extra tuition classes. That meant that Wooyoung and his friends had to spend more torturous hours in school seeing each other's greasy faces and crinkled school outfits. They were exhausted to say the least.

They have extra classes 3 times a week and they never change classroom locations like the art students did. They had no reason to. All science related labs just so happened to be located on the same top floor of the school building. While the art kids got to walk to different buildings or small sheds on the school grounds depending on which class and which teacher.

"it's going to rain" muttered Mingi, looking at the bright sky while spacing out. They were all resting waiting for the tuition teacher to enter and start class.

"how do you know that?" some classmate of theirs asked, fanning themselves with one of their notebooks as a makeshift fan.

"i have a sixth sense .... i can feel it in my right boob" he answered with a straight face. Nearly 6 students turned around to look at him baffled and perturbed..

"He did not just say 'his left boob' ..."

"No he definitely said it ..." another said with their eyes closed.

"Wasn't it his right boob tho?" another student said, mouth stuffed with bread.

"Can we please stop talking about boobs!!" the only voice that was not monotone only because they got woken up.

"Why is it always Mingi man ...."

The person didn't know if they regretted asking or not but by the looks of it, seeing as their mouth couldn't close in disbelieve, they did in fact ... regret it.

The science students of HaByeol High were fairly quiet kids, they preferred to stick to their books or sleep when teachers weren't around. And it was quiet; until,

"NO!" dramatic Wooyoung starts again. He wiped non-existent tears while laying fetus position on the floor, cradling himself.

It was AP Biology class again. As you can see, it is most definitely his absolute favourite class. He wasn't anywhere near failing the class, it was just that he absolutely hated the way the teacher taught. He swears 'he's out for me with that nasally voice and broken stick of his'. So he must escape while he can. And escape he will.

"CHOI SAN!" he yells out the window, "AMICUS!"

"AD" someone shouts back, all the way from the opposite building. Quite impressive really if you consider their distance apart.

"ARAS!" they holler in union. They're on thin ice around the disciplinary teacher.

Soon after, the science students were greeted by a blue-haired boy with killer dimples. This art boy was Wooyoung's escape excuse. The blue-haired boy named San casually walked into his friends' classroom.

"San-ah!" and the blue-haired boy curved Wooyoung to keep walking further into the room. To a girl sitting alone with earphones in.

"Did you just ..."

"Hey. Hey. Wanna go to the snack bar with me? *wink*" and the blue-haired boy was met with no reply. So he'll try again.

"If you go with me .... I'll buy you chocolate milk. Wanna go?" very casually did San ask her out, pointing towards the door with the other hand tucked in his pants pocket.

"pshh ... why is he trying to act cool" scoffed Mingi, amused by what his art friend was trying to do.

"sdfgkl he even winked! eeww" laughed Wooyoung. His eyes went to his girl friend and his bestfriend. No, in fact, Wooyoung was straight up smirking. And only he knows why.

"I don't even like chocolate milk" she calmly replied, eyes closed as if she was sleep talking. That caused her friends around her to snicker remarks, looking at her in disbelieve.

"wah...you, my friend, are shamelessly lying" confronted Yeosang. He wasn't planning on interrupting his fools of friends, but this was too ear catching to pass by.

"couldn't she have thought of a better lie?" shook Mingi.

"and yet records would tell you, you were the one to finish the chocolate milk stocks!" yelled Wooyoung.

All those who go against her, she plainly ignored. If she can block her ears, she is innocent.

"If you go with me, I'll buy you all kinds of delicious snacks" offered San again, ignoring his background, still focusing on her alone.

"what are we ... 4?"

Finally, the girl sighed and took of her earphones slowly. Neatly she tucked them away and gave San the attention he was asking for. To everyone else, including San, it seemed like everyone and her friends are a bother to her. But not to Wooyoung, nope.

"If i go with you, strawberry milk, pockys and yogurt?" if San wasn't going to agree, sadly she was going to turn his offer down.

"Sure" wait what?

"Sure, anything you want" San winks again. He was too composed, charming indeed. His deep voice was like silk.

She wasn't stupid. No one turns down free food. Not she.

"Me too me too!" jumped Wooyoung in between his 2 friends.

"You pay yourself"

And that was the first time San got to talk to her. The only girl friend he ever saw his bestfriends hung around with, especially in school. He liked teasing her. In some ways, she was the a lot like Yeosang. Quiet yet does not shy away from savage remarks.

What San didn't see though, was her lightly blushed cheeks when she looked down to 'see her steps', cleverly using her long hair as frame to gain composure in milliseconds. And on San's other side, was a surprisingly behaved normally loud boy, smirking to himself, thinking to himself. But you know what?

Wooyoung always knows.

You hated Neverland with a passion. You hated that time stood still. You hated that the entire island was a dense jungle. You hated the pirates that would come to shore for the sole purpose of fucking shit up. You hated that you were the only girl on the island. You hated that you were taken from your home, from your loving home. You hated the rambunctious Lost Boys. You hated their leader, the self-proclaimed king of Neverland. You hated Peter Pan more than anything. You didn’t belong on Neverland. You never did. The island was for the lost, and you weren’t among those who felt that way.

You didn’t know why you were brought to the island in the first place. You didn’t feel lost. You never heard music come from Pan’s flute. You missed your warm, loving home. You missed your bed and burying yourself under the covers. Here? You had a cot and a thin, scratchy blanket. It was hot and muggy on the island. You missed the comfort of air conditioning.

If you didn’t need Pan’s permission to leave the island, you would’ve left a long time ago. But you did have to get his permission, so you were trapped until the end of time. And in a place where time doesn’t pass, the end of time couldn’t  be further out of reach. You’d heard stories of a boy who found a way off the island, but you knew that Pan watched the way in and the way out like a hawk. He wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. No one was allowed to leave, ever.

You prayed that Pan didn’t know of your hatred of the island. Pan knew everything, though. Especially if one of his Lost Ones didn’t feel at home. You never once thought that he’d confront you about it. You should’ve expected it, though. With the way things were headed, you should’ve realized that yet another thing wouldn’t go your way.

It was after dinner one night. Pan was having another one of his celebrations after bringing yet another boy to the island. He played his flute and the boys danced around a fire. You couldn’t help but wonder what the music sounded like.

You hadn’t realized that Pan had sat beside you. He cleared his throat. Your head turned, your hair whipping around your face.

“Yes, Pan?” Your voice was small. You never were as loud as the boys–you never saw a reason to be.

“Why don’t you join the boys?” He nodded towards the others. They continued their intricate dance around the fire, all of their worries cast aside.

“I just wasn’t feeling it tonight,” you lied.

He raised a brow. “You said the same thing when you first came here.” Your breath caught in your throat. He leaned in closer. “Tell me, Y/N, can you hear the music like the boys do?”

“I, uh, I mean,” you stuttered, “that depends on what you mean by music.”

“Y/N.”

“…no. No, I don’t hear it. I never could.”

He said nothing. He rose to his feet, holding out his hand. You took it, following behind him as he left the camp. He took you to a part of the jungle you’d never been to before. Pan left go of your hand and stared at you.

“Do you know why I brought you here, Y/N?”

You frowned. “Wait, you’re the reason I’m here?”

“I’m the reason every last one of the Lost Boys is here. Why would you be any different?” You didn’t say anything, so he continued. “I thought I saw something in you. I thought you’d enjoy Neverland and everything it had to offer. Tell me, Y/N, was I wrong? Do you even enjoy the island?”

“Honestly?” You took a deep breath. “I hate this island, and I hate you. I had a loving family, and you just took me from that! Every other Lost One had a choice to stay in their home, or come with you. You never gave me that choice.” You stared at him, but he wouldn’t meet your eyes. “Why? Why am I not the same as all the others?”

“Because you’re so much better than the others.”

“That’s a not real answer,” you said. “I want to know why you took me from my family, forced me to come to an island I didn’t want to even know about. I want to know why you treat me so differently than the boys, and don’t you dare say it’s because I’m a girl.”

“You’re not like the others, Y/N,” Pan said. You scoffed. “I care about you more than the others.”

“What? Is that your way of saying you’re in love with me or some shit? ‘Cause rest assured, the feeling isn’t reciprocated.”

His frowned deepened. “You don’t mean that. Think about what you’re saying.”

You laughed. “What, you really think I’d love someone who, when it comes to it, kidnapped me? You have to be kidding yourself.”

“If that’s how you really feel…” He paused. “Then, I suppose you’ll have to learn to love me.”

He did something, used his magic against you or something. Everything went fuzzy then turned to black. Hours later, you awoke in a wooden cage. You’d heard about these things, too. People who upset Pan would end up here.

Through the bars, you could see another cage across from you. A girl, a few years younger than you, sat there. She looked like she’d been there a lot longer than you. She stared at you, her eyes wide.

“Who are you?” you asked.

“Wendy,” she said. “I don’t know what you did, but Pan’s angrier than I’ve ever seen him. You must’ve done something terrible.”

“I–”

Your cage was suddenly lowered, hitting the ground with a dull thud. No one was opening the door to the cage, but you could see Pan crouching down in front of it.

“Have you changed your mind, love?” he asked.

You frowned, words tumbling out of your mouth before you could stop them. “There’s nothing to be changed. I still hate everything about Neverland.”

His gaze hardened. “I’m sorry to hear that, but I know you’ll change your mind eventually. Until then, I suppose some time in the cage will do you some good.”

The cage rose back to the tree tops, and Pan left. You looked at Wendy, and wondered if you would be there forever.
