Maybe the reason we don't see Elder Amund is because he had a heart attack and died.

Regulus lets out a harsh laugh. “We’re the same, you know? Birds of a feather, and all that.”

The words should warm James’ heart but taken in this context all they do is make his gut churn. “Don’t say that. Don’t—we’re not.”

“How are we not?”

“You kill people, Regulus! What do you mean—”

“And you don’t?!” is yelled back with such barely restrained fury that it shocks James into silence. Regulus shakes his head, fists clenching and unclenching by his sides. “The only difference is that the people you kill are bad. But bad is subjective, isn’t it? If you think about it, the people I kill are considered bad, too, if only by different standards. We both kill to save ourselves, for the greater good, whatever the fuck you want to call it. But we both kill. So don’t bother with your righteous bullshit, James, because I don’t want to hear it.”

“Righteous bull—that’s not being righteous, that’s just being human! But I guess you wouldn’t know about that, would you.” The second the words leave James’ mouth, he wishes he could take them back. They’re aimed to hurt, said in a reckless second of uncontrolled emotion, clearly hitting their mark going by the way Regulus tenses even further than he already is.

“Is that how it is? All right James, you win. I’m a horrible, bad, evil person—sorry, thing—and you’re the heaven-sent gift that’s going to save everyone’s lives. I get it.” He starts walking away, despite James’ protests and apologies. “Just do me a favor, yeah? Next time you come to stop me like the hero you are, don’t be so gentle. Because I sure as hell fucking won’t.”

Regulus disappears from one second to the next, leaving James staring hopelessly at the empty space before him, feeling like something was ripped away from him before he ever had the chance to figure out what it meant.

one thing that's striking me when reading the My Stand In novel scenes that align with ep 1-2 is that Joe aka ZhouXiang isn't stupid or oblivious. He doesn't know Ming is obsessed with his sister's man & using him to vent frustrated desires. But he knows Ming is completely self-absorbed, has "a bad temper", and swings hot & cold. Yet Joe/ZhouXiang is infatuated, a bit lonely, and is simply at a place where he's ready to settle down and get domesticated. Joe KNOWS this is Not Great Bob 🙃 but he finds himself justifying the allowances he's making (everyone forgives beautiful people!) and whenever Ming is involved now, Joe is acting out of character. He's fully aware that he started out just attracted and now he's digging himself deeper and he should stop, but he doesn't. And doesn't and doesn't.

It's painfully relatable: being self-aware that you really shouldn't get more enmeshed with someone... but not able to stop yourself from impulsively clinging. Watching yourself slide into a slow-motion car accident. Knowing it's partially your own damn fault.

It makes the tragedy that we know is coming - we know these circumstances somehow lead to his DEATH - even more pathetic, because he has his own part in this.

Like, he KNOWS the feelings are unbalanced but he's thinking, oh I'm making headway. I can make him return my feelings if I just put in the effort. Haven't we all been there once, chasing affection from someone withholding and almost addicted to the emotional highs/lows, thinking you've gained ground (they texted back! they stopped by late at night! they confessed a vulnerability!) only to see it yanked back.

If Ming is a villian in Joe's story, it's also because Joe is helping it be written that way.

It's a joke, but he's not riding the wave of it at all.

The only warning he got of Leon's arrival was a message from Ada that said Play nice. and was signed with her signature little kiss. There weren't many people to be trusted with their network of safehouses, and so the one Leon arrives to is prepared with something of a bio-mechanics lab downstairs and a collection of sleeping spaces upstairs.

Attached to the lab was a kitchen with two microwaves (marked for food and absolutely no food allowed) where the two of them saw each other again for the first time in what felt like a lifetime.

Luis gives an easy smile, hip cocked against the doorframe, and shrugs one-shouldered. His movements, as much as he goes for casual and easy-going, carry the stiffness of nerve aches to them.

"Eh, there's lots of excuses to make, and none of them particularly impressive. It's nice to see you in one piece, Sancho."

What did you say after something like that? Nothing that really mattered in the scheme of things when both of you were alive against all odds. There's fondness in Luis's voice, even as he pushes away from the door to meet Leon halfway in the front room.

"So, our lovely Ada has sent you here, yeah? She didn't give me much explanation as to why, so I suppose it's up to you to tell me."
