#-because of how her favorite character is seen and treated

is it me or I think there is some misogyny within the monster fandom..i mean people treat Eva and Vera as the worst people in the wolrd when I can think of much worser characters, and they boil down Nina to "a nice girl" and ignore all her complexities, symbolism and narrative importance and say "she isnt that well developed and not important to plot"
Misogyny certainly plays a role here, it's esp. evident with how the fandom treats Eva (esp. before she grew as a character; and even after she grows, it's mostly about "she stopped harassing Tenma" and her relationship with Martin, while the more important thing here (imo)âhow she started to take care of herself and stopped defining herself through the men in her lifeâis underdiscussed).
But I think it'd be reductive to say that the way the audience sees the women in Monster is only a result of misogyny; I think a crucial aspect here is the way the female characters are written and how they're treated by the male cast.
I think it's one of the many traps laid by Urasawa, traps that are very easy to fall into (which is perfectly understandable with a complex work filled with so many characters). I also fell into them: my first reaction to Eva was "oh, here we go again, female characters written by dudes" (yeah, Monster taught me to stop yapping about shit without 1) finishing it 2) looking at it carefully, because the devil is the details).
So what exactly are the traps built of?
Cliches
Subtle characterization and/or an apparent lack of information that shows in, for example, the namelessness or very little time on screen.
The fact that a large part of the story is the lack of a story.
Ad 1. I think a big part of Monster is the way it plays with cliches (and it does so boldly; it isn't afraid to introduce us to the most overused cliches and turn them into little storytelling gems), so of course there're also many female character cliches: the love interests, the damsels in distress, the naive & clueless woman, etc.
And when you don't pay attention, it's easy to think that these cliches are everything that can be told about these characters. When we stop here, we miss so many details that reveal the more complex character behind these cliches.
Ad 2. I think Nina is a perfect example of how the subtle characterization can leave many people thinking that she's underdeveloped, irrelevant to the plot, and just an addition to Tenma and Johan.
We also don't have access to her direct point of view, but I don't think it's necessary here and I think we don't have access to it for a very good reason; women are still seen mainly as caregivers, as people who serve others, and are socialized to be nice from a very young age. This can lead to ignoring one's own needs and, in consequence, losing yourself.
And Nina is a character who fits into this role perfectly; she's often shown serving others, bringing kindness where it's needed, being a beam of hope, etc. She's also very often overshadowed by her brother; she's referred to by other characters as "Johan's sister", as if this was the most important information about her.
Heck, Johan even takes away from her the monster title; the reasons behind it are, of course, ambiguous, but it doesn't change the fact that it was her who was kidnapped to the Red Rose Mansion and it was her whose memories were taken away.
And she's clearly upset when Johan tells her that it is his story to tell.
One of my favorite examples of her subtle characterization is the fact that in the beginning of the story, she wants to be a public prosecutor, and by the end, she wants to be a lawyer. It seems like a small change, but it tells a lot about how much her worldview changed.
When it comes to the namelessness and the little time on screen, a good example of it would be VÄra. Please keep in mind that we only learn about her possible name in Another Monster; why do I say it's only possible? Because the only source of this name is one person interviewed by Weber, and the person identified VÄra via a sketch. I wouldn't call this the most reliable source.
But let's get back to the main topic; what's the reason behind both the lack of a name and the little time on screen? It's Bonaparta.
Bonaparta doesn't let us see much of her, he doesn't let us learn her real name. But even when we see so little of her, we can still see someone compelling and complex, we see a wide range of emotions, we see her determination, we see who she could be if it wasn't for her circumstances, we see her deep guilt and fragility by the end of the story, we see someone who Bonaparta initially dismissed ("you are a funny woman" etc.) only to end up obsessed with her.
But since it's only a matter of a few panels and she's mainly discussed by other characters as the mother of the twins, it's easy for the audience to a) see her as a bad mother, b) think she's unfairly treated by the manga.
I don't think she's treated unfairly by the manga, I think she's one of the most important characters in Monster and it isn't merely because she's the mother of the twins, it's because we can see so much of her in other Monster characters: in the nameless, the dismissed, the robbed of a better future, the reduced to a certain role, all the characters we simply do not know a thing about their minds and that quite possibly, behind the awful clichĂŠs, there were in them gardens and twilights, and palace gates.
(I tried to stop myself from babbling about Lolita, but it's not my fault the quote fits so well here.)
Ad 3. I mentioned the lack of the story partially in Ad 2., but there are so many other examples: the little girl who lives with Hugo Bernhardt, Richard Braun's daughter and wife, Lunge's daughter and wife (the difference between how Richard sees his family vs. how Lunge sees his family is shown in the narration as well), Martin's mother and girlfriend etc.
Thanks for the ask! â(^äşş^)

It is not my âheadcanonâ when localization team actually done goofed. They even CUT one of Dollâs lines, and EVEN changed tone of Gehrmanâs voice. I also directly refer to the documents and videos of people who DO speak Japanese professionally - Last Protagonist and Arukimania, and leave the link in every other post.
If I cannot refer to the work of professionals in the language and must learn the language myself, then you cannot follow doctorâs diagnosis when you get something hurty and must study medicine yourself. Your logic is fundamentally broken, as you can see, but we all know that mobs like you change the rules depending on what is convenient for THEM at the given moment :/
But just to spite you the next time I am checking Twitter, I am asking some of like 50000 Japanese artists there about the bits I typically use as evidence. Be sure to keep stalking my blog to not miss when I post the screenshots, since you are obsessed with me so much ;)
#ask replies#personal#for someone who ends literally every debate with 'i don't have time for this' you sure have enough time to not miss my posts?#honestly the absurd lenghts you go through just to cancel a fictional character you dislike is sheer madness#like... calm down#also you are the only person in the entire fandom that uses being white as an arguement#like... who are you trying to fool?#i don't need to be ranni the witch to look at a message and instantly say who you are#i mean it can ALSO be autism drawbacl#i have an autistic friend in another fandom who unfortunately has a history of hurting and even harrassing people-#-because of how her favorite character is seen and treated#but she grew some balls to become better and more mature and calm her temper a little bit#like not to downvote my own neurodivergency but autism effects everyone possibly#and one of the starter stats CAN be 'being obnoxious about one's headcanons' (in your case that Gehrman is the worst person ever)#but this is exactly why we TRY to adapt to other people? like are you buying?

mel c magdalene made me realize what was missing from my magdalene design and it's that she's not fucking jacked. it's crucial to her character
#đ§
#literally my takeaway from jcs2012 was mary magdalene's arms. yeah those guys were there too i guess#i think hers might be my favorite portrayal of mary#like. not just because she's jacked i just really liked how jc2012 worked with magdalene#she felt more fleshed out. and i <3 yvonne elliman in this role i always will but lets be so for real in the 1973 movie mary was a sexy lam#character except instead of sexy she was like. sopping wet cat lamp character#i mean i think she was also sexy. but that's beside the point this post is not about how attractive i find yvonne elliman#or mel c#well it kind of is about how attractive i find mel c#whatever. my point is it was the 70s and she was a female character. so like. you get it !#and i feel like a lot of the time magdalene is very girlbossified in a way that makes her very one dimensional#without EVER her appearing masculine of course because god forbid the one female character does not appear to the male gaze#(well originally female character anyways. today genderbend casting is a thing and it fucks)#it's either she's a Girl Disciple (no further elaboration) or she's like. a girlboss stone hearted biker gang leader leather jacket queen#(no actual further elaboration but her one 'ooh i love this man and i dont know how to show it' solo tricks you into thinking there is)#while 2012 magdalene somehow seems much more well rounded to me.#they let her be herself more. idk. that's how i interpreted it at least. in my mind.#it's like. i feel many other marys i've seen are described by how they treat jesus (and sometimes judas)#but this one still feels present even when jesus is not around. or he is but she's not interacting with him.#again this is a very specific interpretation that clicked in my brain im not saying that jcs2012 like. did some groundbreaking feminist#portrayal of magdalene. but yknow !#she also didn't acknowledge judas' existence once while he had created some weird one sided beef with her which was. very funny to me#literally did not waste a glance at him.

Isekaied as the Yandere Villain!? Pt 2
Part one
It was almost 2 minutes before I realized I was still dragging the crown prince behind me. I quickly dropped his hand and looked at him, not able to hide the embarrassment on my face. Listen- Iâm committed to the bit. I WILL be the crazy jealous fiancĂŠ. But⌠Iâm still human ok. I just dragged a full grown man down several halls and a flight of stairs while I spaced out thinking about how Iâm gonna buy my cat premium wet food once I get back home to her.
Itâs fine, Iâm not flustered at spacing out about my cat, my characters just flustered because sheâs been holding the hand of the man sheâs obsessed with, thatâs all!
âWellâŚ. Did you still want to dine and take that walk?â
I expected him to scold me for my mistreatment of Cressida, grow irritated from me dragging him along like this. Instead, he chuckles and threads his arm in mine, and begins escorting me down the hall.
âAbsolutely, have you dined outside by the roses yet? Thereâs this lovely pavilion that I am eager to hear your thoughts on.â
And thatâs how I found myself under an impressive array of roses, all trained up and around a cozy dining area, creating a canopy of green and pink over an intimate tea table. The food was equally impressive, I had to keep reminding myself that the other me is used to this lavish lifestyle, to not gawk at the fancy tiny sandwiches and deserts.
âWell? Is everything to your liking? â
Iâm going off script here, how am I supposed to know how the villainess would react to a romantic scene like this?? If my âevil crazyâ side isnât supposed to be directed at him, and sheâs usually kinda distant and unsure around himâŚ. That means I should probably respond pretty curtly, polite, yet not really engaging. ButâŚ. Iâve already messed that upâŚ. I guess I can be more genuine when itâs the two of us like this. He can think that this version of me is the facade, that Iâm pretending to be pleasant, and then will start to see what a jerk âIâ truly am when Cressidaâs around. BesidesâŚ. I almost feel bad for the villainess. She really just seems like she was shy. Who knows- maybe, if given the opportunity, she really would have opened up more. Itâs clear she loved the prince, and just didnât know how to show it. So, with that thought, I made up my mind.
âItâs breathtaking! Roses are my favorite flower, and Iâve never seen so many kinds in bloom at onceâŚ. Plus the food and company leave little to be desired.â
There you go- slip in some subtle flirting! Iâm not quite sure what time period this is supposed to be, but I get the impression flirting as bit more high class here, and I think I can have some fun with that.
âIâm glad, to be honest I was a bit flustered asking you to dine with me⌠you caught me quite off guard today, but in a good way.â He reaches his hand across the table and places it on my own, âIâd like to do this more often, you and I. I feel like the confines of our current arrangement have left us practically strangers, despite being engaged for several months already. Iâm enjoying just being companionable with you, even if itâs just existing comfortably in the same room.â
Ohhhh, I know Iâm the villain in this story but I canât help but root for him- what a sweetheart! Itâs so obvious heâs been lonely, I canât wait for him and Cressida to fall in love and have a couple of kids that theyâll spoil rotten. And in the meantimeâŚ. Maybe I do have a bit of evil in me, because Iâm going to selfishly enjoy this handsome man treating me to lunches under roses and reading in cozy libraries while I can.
âI know exactly how you feel your highness. Now, you mentioned a walk?â
We spent the afternoon laughing and chatting, and it felt nice to chat without worrying too much about my role. He asked me about that book I picked out earlier, and listened attentively as I caught him up with where Iâm at in the plot. In turn, I asked about what papers heâs been signing, documents heâs been drafting, etc.
The only thing I had to do was send glares to any young ladies we passed, settling my hand on his arm possessively, and I saw their eyes widen and faces disappear behind fans as they whisper to one another. I can picture this illustrated in a manhwa- the nasty princess sinking her claws into the gullible prince⌠hopefully all these ladies will start gossiping and we can really cement this evil persona of mine now that Cressidaâs here.
When we returned to our separate apartments, I explored my rooms a bit until servants came to get me ready for dinner, and I slipped back into the frigid bitch persona. The servant girls dressed me in a slightly stuffy gown, but I had to admit, I looked gorgeous. I sat stiff and straight as they did my hair, forcing myself to be the very picture of cold indifference. I then dismissively thanked them for their help, then sat there awkwardly as they stared at me like I was crazy.
Ohhhh shitâŚ. The original story hadnât prepared me for this. My character was a villain, yes, but a side character for the most part! How was she supposed to act towards her servants? I went over what I knew- the novel showed the villainess alone quite often, usually obsessing over Eric and plotting/stalking. It showed her with Eric, and how distant and awkward their relationship was when together. And then of course the numerous scenes with Cressida where the Villainess did all sorts of heinous things to the sweet girl. But⌠it never depicted her with servants, or even any friends or other nobles. Just⌠Eric and Cressida. Was other me not actually a bitch all the time? Am I being unnecessarily rude right now? Oh god Iâm such an idiot.
The story is told through Cressidaâs point of view- of course thereâs more depth to my own character than I initially thought! The Villianess must be a misunderstood introvert! Unsure of how to act around her crush, sheâs fiercely insecure and jealous of this new girl who doesnât struggle the same way she does. When she notices the prince slipping from her grasp, she acts out against Cressida because she canât bear to lose Eric!
As someoneâs whoâs worked minimum wage jobs and struggled with social anxiety most of my life, I try to be nice to the people just working to survive, but here I am acting like these poor women are the dirt beneath my shoeâŚ. Ok. Um. Well theyâre still standing there in shock, I can fix thisâŚ.
âYou really did a lovely job⌠my hair has never looked so gorgeous, youâre truly talented! And I think the prince will be very pleased with this choice of ribbon!â
There- I was nicer, and I brought it back to Eric, so Iâm still the lovesick fiancĂŠ whose entire world is waiting for her in the dining room. I frowned as the servants scuttled out of the room with hurried excuses, all of them looking like they were about to faint. Damn it⌠I canât believe I misread the relationship between us. I probably just ruined their night by being uncharacteristically rude. Iâve gotta learn their names next timeâŚ. Maybe ask them to help me eat some fancy pastries as an apologyâŚ?
I didnât know it, but while I was lamenting how wrong I was about the Villainessâ character, the servants were all gossiping to the others about what had just transpired.
âYouâre telling me she said THANK YOU!?â
âYes!!! And then you should have seen how nervous she got! She just rambled, blurting out such a sweet compliment, and she even tied it back to the prince!â
âI had no idea how precious she was⌠I canât believe I never realized sheâs just shy! In a new place, all alone aside from her new fiancĂŠâŚ. Who I gather sheâs got a bit of a crush on! Poor dear.â
âOhh our sweet girl, Iâm sure it must be hard bonding with the prince, when all you do is sit yards apart and hardly speak âŚâ
âWell I may have some news about that⌠and itâs no wonder she was a bit flustered today, because I saw the two of them in the gardens today! They were both nothing but smiles- absolutely smitten with one another!â
âSuch a lovely girl, and we never knew it all this time!â
Apparently, I had it backwards. The real villainess truly was a 2D, basic character. She was insecure and possessive over the prince, bullying Cressida half to remind her who Eric belonged to, half for the fun of it. But she didnât let on to anyone about the true depth of her love for him. She didnât gossip to her handmaid, didnât ask the servants which dress he would like better. Simply acted as if they did not exist, hardly saying a word to them.
While I thought my blunt âthank youâ was colder than they were used to, and then tried to smooth things overâŚ. It was more words than theyâd heard from me in the whole time Iâd lived in the palace. They lapped it up and declared me their own shy little dove after that.
When I arrived to dinner, I realized why daily dinners werenât exactly a bonding activity for the villainess and Eric. The table was massive, and only held two chairs, one at either end. It felt soâŚ. Cold?
Eric had beat me there, and quickly stood up from his seat, waiting until I sat and a servant pushed in my chair to retake his own seat. He smiled at me and said,
âGood evening, princess.â
He had to project his voice slightly. It wasnât like he was shouting or being loud, it was just the manner of speaking you use when talking to an elderly relative, clearer, and enunciating better so they could hear you.
I replied back, projecting my voice similarly, and found the conversation was, in fact, more awkward than it had been earlier. We ate our food mostly in silence, occasionally one of us would say something and the other would stop moving their utensils on their plate, listening closer as they ask,
âWhatâs that?â
By the time dinner was over and we each went to bed, I felt drained. I could have just been louder I suppose- but itâs so hard to keep up a conversation like that. I know we get along- we had chatted all afternoon after all. But some part of me realized itâs probably good to keep a bit of distance between us, even if Iâve rewritten things to be a bit chummier between the two of us. Cressida needs to swoop in and steal him from me⌠and my job is still to leave that room for her to do so.
Itâs hard trying to be someone else, yet also making sure you lead the plot in the right direction- itâs exhausting! I feel like both director and actress!
Itâs with this in mind that I launch myself into the softest bed Iâd ever felt, and passed out. My first day as princess consort, the Yandere fiancĂŠ, complete.
While I was getting acquainted with my feather bed, Eric was speaking with the head waitstaff.
âYes, tomorrow, would you mind adjusting the seating situation? Iâd like for the princess consort and I to be closer together from now on. Yes, and ask my assistant to arrange my schedules like so, Iâve detailed it here. Thank you.â
At the same time, Cressida was recounting her run in with the prince and I to her handmaiden as she finishing unpacking and settling into her familyâs guest apartments. Which, unbeknownst to me⌠was right across the hall.
Aaaa! You survived your first day! And look at you- doing suuuuch a good job staying true to character. Nothing could go wrong⌠right?

I am genuinely still so floored and amazed that project sekai actually went through with making mizuki transfem, like holy shit how much other larger-scale media can you remember actually commiting to something like this instead of just coding a character?
Genuinely down to the reveal where the other students talk about her not being a "normal girl" and asking Ena if "she's a boy too", down to mizuki's utter horror of being outed to her friends by someone else, down to mizuki not being worried about their acceptance but rather being utterly terrified of how they might never treat her the same as they used to, of how they'd step on eggshells around her, IT'S SO FUCKING PEAKKKK-
ALSO THIS WAS AFTER 4 YEARS OF BUILDING UP TO THIS POINT TOO (i haven't been here that long BUT STILL)
Genuine congrats to colorfulpalette for committing to this because holy shit this will live in my head rent-free for a WHILE to come.
ALSO THE VOICE ACTING I'VE SEEN FROM CLIPS??? I knew Hinata Sato shines as Junna in Revue Starlight but she went above and beyond for this, and Minori Suzuki also went absolutely crazy with her voicing, Ena screaming Mizuki's name to try to get her to stop after she runs the second time is the most emotion i've seen someone put into a voice in a while LOOK AT THIS.
sidenote: mizuki akiyama is probably my favorite character ever now i think

Since you take requests, would I be able to ask for something with Mithrun and Kabru with like a reader that's kind of dense with social cues/hints (especially if they're romantic)?
(I had people confess their love to me, and I still didn't get it till they put it in very clear terms)
(it's probably the 'tism, but I digress. )
I think it's potentially an absolutely hellerious dynamic since Kabru always plays 5D chess with every social interaction. As for Mithrun, I think it's funny to think how the other canaries would just be repeatedly hitting their head on the wall because their captain won't say it straight and they just don't g e t i t.
Ps: I absolutely love how in-depth all of your understanding of characters and their personalities are, and I just hxfhxdvgudts.
This blog just brings me so much joy

⥠Kabru âĄ
- Kabru has had little flings here and there throughout his life. He treated every partner with respect, of course, but Kabru wasnât particularly looking for love. He doesnât dislike the idea of love, it just hasnât happened yet.
- So, when Kabru starts to genuinely fall in love with someone, itâs a new feeling. Heâs observant enough to recognize what it is.
- Unfortunately, the person heâs falling in love with is you.
âHeâs been unusually quiet lately,â Holm remarked. Who he was remarking that to remained to be seen. Mickbell didnât care much. Kuro had other things to worry about. And Rin had already made the same observation three times earlier that day.
The first floor of the dungeon was always crowded, and Kabruâs ears were usually open for anything that could be of use. The leather armor merchant to his left had recently raised his prices. The cobbler to the right was in an argument with an older lady over the shape of a patch heâd made on her favorite boots. And Holm was concerned about Kabruâs recent lack of observations; as concerned as Holm could be.
âIs that really such a shock?â Kabru sent Holm a smile over his shoulder. âIâm not exactly a chatterbox.â
But he was aware of himself enough to know that his behavior lately had been odd. He was usually so good at hiding it, too, but the comfort of his friends seemed to lower his walls. Without realizing it, Kabru had spent their latest dungeon expedition sighing to himself, staring at walls, and missing the details of important things. On the third floor, theyâd encountered thieves. His party always relied on him to clock the intentions of approaching adventurersâ thieves tended to be overly familiar, friendly, and a bit too eagerâ but Kabruâs mind was elsewhere. The thieves attacked, and it had genuinely taken him by surprise. The fight wasnât hard, but Kabruâs lack of preparation set off alarms in Rin and Holmâs heads.
âYouâre not,â Rin agreed. Her brow furrowed and she got that cute little line on her forehead again. âHowever, youâve really been out of it.â
âHave you been thinking about that person again?â Holm asked.
That person. That person? Kabru knew a lot of persons. The whole first level was filled to the brim with persons, half of them being his acquaintances. Kabru had zero desire to admit that he knew precisely who Holm was referring to, though, and decided to keep his gaze straight ahead as he weaved through the crowd.
When he didnât respond, Mickbell laughed, âYeah, heâs thinking of them alright.â
âHeat?â Kuro asked.
Mickbell scoffed from his place on Kuroâs shoulders, âTall-men donât go into heat! At least I donât think so. But they catch feelings, like a cold. Kabruâs caught a cold.â
âNot sneezing,â Kuro mumbled.
âA feelings cold, I mean! The worst kind.â
That was one way to put it. Kabru couldnât help but sigh as he led the party towards a quieter spot in the corner. Once they were out of the sea of people, he leaned against the stone wall and ran his fingers through his hair. âI donât have feelings, Iâm simply curious,â he said.
Curious. Right. Mickbell sent him a scrunched up, narrow-eyed look that was reminiscent of constipation. Yet, Rin interjected before the half-foot could say something heinous. âWhatâre you curious about, particularly?â She asked.
âGood question,â Kabru folded his arms over his chest and tilted his head in thought.
What was he curious about? You held so many secrets. You had this look in your eyes that drew him, a look that reminded him of a room in his motherâs house. She always told him to not go inside. Her rules only made him want to turn the knob even more. And when he finally did disobey her and go inside, all he saw were boxes full of ceramic unicorn miniatures. Still, the rush of satisfaction heâd felt at finally knowing what was in there couldnât be matched. Thatâs what he wanted to do to you, open your door and take a peek.
Or, perhaps a âpeekâ was an understatement. He wanted to meticulously inspect every inch of your mind with a microscope, to know the atoms unseen by the human eye, to be intimately acquainted with every molecule you possessed.
âHeâs zoned out again,â Holm muttered, ripping Kabru out of his thoughts.
He looked up, eyes widening at the observation. Holm was right, he was zoned out again, staring at the dirt on the floor and contemplating you.
He forced a smile, âDonât worry about me, really. Iâm just preoccupied. Itâs that person, I simply want to know their intentions.â
âIntentions for what?â Rin asked.
For everything. There was no simple answer.
âOh hey,â Mickbell glanced over his shoulder. His voice was flat as he scanned the room, âThere they are.â
Kabru followed Mickbellâs gaze, a straight line that led directly to youâ all lines seemed to lead directly to you lately. His heart clenched in a way that was both unpleasant and addictive. Without realizing it, he pushed away from the wall and began striding toward where you stood.
âWait,â Rin grabbed his arm as he passed. Kabru blinked, looking down at her and waiting for her to speak. She met his eyes and frowned, âI think youâre going to be disappointed. Theyâre not as mysterious as you think they are.â
Nonsense. You were incredibly mysterious. Kabru could tell you had secrets, layers. He dreamed of pulling them back one by one.
âThey couldnât disappoint me,â he sent Rin a smile that he hoped was reassuringâ he knew it was, heâd practiced it in the mirror and on other people all the time.
âI think they will,â she argued.
âThey wonât,â his smile faltered just the slightest. Rin didnât usually get involved in Kabruâs⌠hobby. Did she know something he didnât? He decided to not ask outright, accepting the challenge of figuring out the meaning behind her concern on his own.
Rin let go of his arm and Kabru was free to go. His mind switched elsewhere, onto you, and before he knew it he was already slipping through the crowd of bodies to reach you.
You were in front of the vegetable sellerâs stand, inspecting a lumpy potato. Kabru knew the vegetable seller was cheating on his wife. Usually, heâd try to get more out of the man, digging deeper simply for the sake of knowing. Yet, you stood there, beautiful and mind-consuming. What did Rin mean by âI think youâre going to be disappointedâ? Kabru was rarely disappointed with secrets.
âHey,â he raised a hand as he neared. You looked up from the potato and returned his smile. There was that look in your eyes again, that closed door he desperately needed the key to.
He loved crowds. He loved the hundreds of voices. He loved listening to each one and assigning them meaning, picking apart their words, filing them away into neat little categories. Yet, the crowd might as well have disappeared. All he saw was you. All he wanted was you and your words and your thoughts and your fears and your goals and your likes and your dislikes and your intentions and yourâ
âOh hey,â your voice cut through the wants like the slash of a sword, âKapru.â
Kapru.
His brows furrowed and he plastered on a polite smileâ also practiced in the mirror. âItâs Kabru.â
âRight, sorry,â you shrugged.
Were you playing with him? Were you sending your pawn out, a piece that you expected him to take for the sake of a larger, more powerful move? Was it bait?
âHow are you?â He forced himself to ask, though he could hear the weakness in his voice. He desperately hoped you wouldnât notice.
You only tilted your head in thought, âIâm fine. Just buying potatoes.â
âItâs been so long since weâve seen each other,â Kabru said. It was a lie, you saw him last week. âMy party and I are about to go back to the surface to restock. We could grab a drink if you wanted.â
âWhy?â You asked.
Why? Why? Kabru couldnât say why. He wouldnât say why. âI want to take detailed notes on every word you say, every gesture, every breathâ wouldnât be helpful to his cause in the least.
âBecause weâre friends,â he slowly explained. Again, there was that hint of weakness lacing every syllable. He wanted to tear his voice box apart and reconstruct it in a way that wouldnât falter every time he saw you.
But you didnât seem to notice. âAlright,â you sent him a smile that made his heart clench.
Alright. Kabruâs smile relaxed, âAlright,â he echoed. âItâs a date.â
âItâs a dateâ was a common saying, of course. But it still held implications, it still held desires, it still signified something moreâ At least to him it did.
You remained unphased by it, though. Usually, when Kabru said that, there would be a laugh or blush or the widening of eyes. You gave him nothing of the sort. No flirtatious looks, no intention-laced smile, no flicker of recognition.
âSee you then,â was all you said.
Rin was wrong. You couldnât disappoint him. Opening your doors and peeking inside your mind would be so satisfying.
- You go on several dates with Kabru without realizing theyâre dates.
- After one date when you make friends with the next table over and invite them to join your meal, introducing Kabru as âmy friendâ and not âthe man who is courting meâ or âmy boyfriendâ, he begins to wonderâŚ
- Do you not realize that these are dates?
Kabru knew he had the tendency to stare, but he usually kept that urge locked away for the sake of masking. Always masking. Always aware of his surroundings and the people and the words and the looks.
He kept his staring urge hidden at first. Yet as time passed, as you went on more dates, he couldnât help himself. He had to stare. He had to drink in every detail of your face, coveting it all as a desert wanderer would covet water.
And you didnât seem to mind. You would give him this look sometimes, a look he couldnât quite decipher. It was a mixture between affection and confusion and bashfulness. It was his favorite expression of yours and never failed to put butterflies in his stomach.
Kabru knew he was falling in love. He wasnât opposed to the idea, but heâd never been truly in love before. At night when he forced himself into bed, he stared at the ceiling and mused on the future you had together. Neither of you had said anything to make the relationship official, but was that even needed? It was obvious that you were togetherâ to him, at least.
Kabru held your hand as he led you through the crowded streets. Once you caught up to his side, he placed his palm on the small of your back. He wasnât much for PDA, but it was a necessity when traversing the island together. He didnât want to lose you in the crowd.
Once you were in a more quiet spot, he sent you a smile, âI have to ask, Iâm too curious; Whatâs your favorite date that weâve had together?â
You thought for a moment, âHm⌠I would have to say last week. It was a Thursday. I like Thursdays anyway. I think it was the 7th? Yeah. June 7th, Thursday. Thatâs a good date, itâs a bit cool outside and all the flowers are blooming. But if I had to say which one was my favorite, I think it would be April 18th. Iâm not sure that we spent that date together, though.â
âŚOkay.
Like the sunset rising over the mountains, it began to dawn on him.
Were you stupid?
No, you werenât stupid. He had seen you in the dungeon before, how you fought and strategized and reacted. You couldnât be stupid.
Then what? Were you playing hard to get? Were you teasing him? Was this a move on the board, your Knight piece pressing forward to continue the assault? Kabru needed to know.
He kept his hand on your back but his gaze straight ahead. âThatâs nice,â he said. It wasnât nice, actually. âWhat about when we hold hands? Do you enjoy that?â
You shrugged, âIt helps us keep track of each other as we go through a crowd.â
âBut I hold your hand even when weâre not around other people.â
The face you made betrayed your true thoughts. âYeah, it seems like your hands are cold a lot. You really should start keeping gloves with you.â
â...Do you think Iâm holding your hand because my fingers are cold?â
Another flash of confusion, another furrow of your brows. âWhy else would you hold my hand?â
The sun rose completely over the mountains and the daytime, clear and bright, engulfed his world.
You had no clue.
- This stresses Kabru out immensely.
- He starts taking notes. He has a special little book just for you. A lot of the pages are filled with scribbles and question marks.
- He makes a plan on what to do. Heâs going to up the ante, heâs going to make his feelings so clear that you canât ignore them or be oblivious even if you tried.
- He starts getting more touchy. He kisses your forehead often. He kisses your knuckles. Heâs around you all the time, every chance he gets. He tells you youâre beautiful. He says that he wants you to meet his mother. He talks about your future together.
- You say, âOh, your mom? Cool. You think weâll get along? Iâm always up for making new friends.â
- âYou want a future with me? Well, Iâm free next Wednesday.â
âI like you,â Kabru was breathless and wide-eyed. His hair was a mess from how often heâd run his fingers through it. He was disheveled and hadnât slept the entire night.
You glanced up from the book you were reading, âOh? Cool, thanks.â
He sent you a look. âNo, I mean I love you.â
âYeah,â you flipped a page in the book, âlove you too.â
âYou do?â Hope bloomed and unfurled like a spring flower. Kabru felt his cheeks grow warm, a fire igniting within him.
âYeah,â you said lightly, âI love all my friends, of course.â
That spring flower suddenly wilted. The fire was doused by a cold bucket of water in the form of your words. Kabru wanted to scream and bang his head against the wall.
âYou donât get it,â he hissed through clenched teeth, fingers tensing as he leaned forward, desperate. âIâm in love with you. This is really hard for me to say, but I think you need to hear it like this. I love you. I love you. I love youâŚâ Somehow, his cheeks went even hotter. His adams apple bobbed as he swallowed his embarrassment, âI-I⌠Sorry. I just need you like I need oxygen. IâŚâ
You snorted, âYou donât need me to breathe, Iâm a person not an organ. Youâre breathing right now just fine.â
He was not breathing just fine, but that was beside the point.
âExcuse me for a moment,â Kabru said. He could hear how strained his voice sounded.
You watched as he walked away, rounding a corner and disappearing from sight. Then he screamed. It sounded like he also kicked something, a crate or box maybe.
How odd.
- When it finally gets through your head, heâs actually a bit satisfied by your embarrassment at it all. Yes, please do acknowledge your obliviousness. Please do apologize for treating his love confession so casually. When you do so, he feels as if he could melt from the relief.
- He still wants to bang his head on the wall, though.
- And heâs spent a lot of nights screaming into his pillow.
- Kabru continues to play 5d chess with you, just simply out of habit, but youâre playing Hungry Hungry Hippos the entire time. He still finds himself trying to pick apart your actions and responses, but heâs learned how to take things at face value when it comes to you. Itâs a difficult adjustment, but one heâs willing to make.
- He starts to learn, take more notes, observe your behavior. For dates, he lays it out carefully. You two are going to do this specific thing. Why? Because he would like to see you happy, and hold your hand, and kiss you. Why? Because he loves you. Now you get it.
- Youâre fascinating actually. Genuinely, he starts to adore how your brain works. He wants to pick it apart and hold the pieces up to a magnifying glass.
⥠Mithrun âĄ
- He does not care.
- Be as oblivious as you want, thatâs not going to stop Mithrun.
- The Canaries, however, are going insane.
âHowâs it going with them?â Pattadol asked. Her hands were folded in front of her in that polite way, the way that told Mithrun that his second in command had something on her mind. Pattadol thought she was subtle. She was not.
And he knew precisely who she was referring to. Might as well give her an answer thatâll satisfy her curiosity, lest she keep asking questions.
âFine,â he answered, âjust fine.â
Yet, Pattadolâs brow furrowed. Not a good sign.
âJust fine?â She asked. Her voice went up a pitch. âItâs just fine? Really?â
âReally.â
She unlaced her fingers and spread out her hands as if gesturing to something, but all that surrounded them was Mithrunâs under-decorated living quarters. There was really nothing to gesture at besides the wooden cabinets and the bed. Mithrun waited, aware that she was picking through her piles of thoughtsâ probably thoughts mixed with screams of frustrationâ to find the right words.
Finally, Pattadol forced a shaken smile, âItâs clear to anyone that knows you that youâre in love with them, Captain.â
That was what she decided to say? It was a bit blunt for Pattadolâs usual style. Mithrun only shrugged, âYeah, youâre right. Itâs pretty obvious.â
âSo why havenât they noticed yet?â
âWhy do you care?â
âBecause I want you to be happy for once!â Pattadol snapped, but she then took a deep breath, âSorry, Captain, I didnât mean to sound that way. This is hard for me, talking so openly about these things⌠But itâs so frustrating to watch.â
Mithrun could understand that. While he personally wasnât frustrated by the circumstances, he knew that the Canaries couldnât stand watching his interactions with you. It wasnât a big deal in the long run, in his opinion. Theyâd get over it.
âThank you,â he answered.
âDo you have any ideas on how we can do that?â
âDo what?â
Pattadolâs eye twitched ever so slightly. Her fingers tensed like claws, and Mithrun felt the corner of his lips turn up in a barely-there smirk. But genuinely, he wasnât sure what she referred to. Did she mean the part about him being happy, or the part about you being oblivious? She shouldâve been more clear.
âAboutâŚâ she hesitated. Obviously she wasnât sure what she meant either. She then nodded as if deciding, âAbout everything. About the obliviousness, your happiness, etcetera.â
He didnât know what the etcetera referred to, but didnât care to ask. âYou donât have to do anything,â Mithrun assured her as he leaned back in the chair and folded his arms. The wood creaked slightly from the movement. Everything on this boat creaked, as was the nature of boats, he guessed.
âI would like to do something,â Pattadol nodded, determined. âWe all would.â
A shrug, âAlright. Then do something.â
- Pattadol, over-achiever and top student and certified Girl Who Cares Too Much, takes that as a challenge.
- Cithis only joins because she thinks itâll be funny.
- Fleki also only joins because she thinks itâll be funny.
- And Lycion also also joins because he thinks itâll be funny (though he does care on some level. Not really about you, but about Mithrun. And itâs painful to watch.)
- Otta is forced to join.
- The attempts are weak at first, like dipping a toe into the water to see how cold it is. Mithrun only has so much patience for interference with his life, so they have to be smart and tread carefully.
- Pattadol gives Mithrun a hint. âThereâs some pretty flowers growing beside the road over there. You should give one to them!â
- âWhat would they need a flower for?â
- Mithrun asks that on purpose. He knows precisely what heâs doing. Yes, people generally like receiving flowers, he knows that. But he also believes that flowers are useless gifts.
- âThen what present do you suggest?â Pattadol asks.
- Mithrun has an idea. He gets you soap. Everybody uses soap (hopefully) Itâs a useful gift, and if he gives you the same kind he uses then heâll get some weird sick flicker of pleasure from having his scent on you. (He wisely chooses to not say that part aloud.)
You held the little bar of soap in your hands as if it were an injured baby bird you found on the ground. Yet your feelings towards it were far from protective or empathetic. This soap said something. It had a mouth and it used it to scream.
You met Mithrunâs flat gaze, âSoapâŚâ
He nodded, âYeah. Soap. Itâs a gift for you.â
For you?
Mithrun continued, âItâs the same kind I use. Smells the same.â
It felt as if youâd swallowed a handful of pebbles and they all had gotten stuck in your throat. âDo you⌠think Iâm stinky?â
You cursed yourself for even asking that. What a useless question. Obviously, he thought you stank! He gave you soap! He was trying to tell you something, being subtle and polite for once! Usually Mithrun would just say it bluntly, but heâd been working on his desires lately. Perhaps heâd also decided to embrace societal expectations? You werenât sure. But soap. Soap!
You didnât notice how Mithrun tensed. You didnât see him quickly blink several times and tilt his head. You didnât see the slight widening of his good eye. âNo, Iââ
âIâll go use this right now,â you interrupted, âIâll go wash away my stench so you can finally stand to be near me.â
Despite the horror, you were a bit proud of yourself. Youâd taken a hint, maybe you were getting less oblivious.
- In your defense, a bar of soap is a weird gift.
- Alright. Mithrun admits it, he needs help. Heâs not so prideful anymore that he wonât admit that he doesnât know what to do.
- Pattadol is really triumphant about that but does her best not to show it.
- Plan B: make it so obvious that you have no choice but to realize his feelings.
âThis has to be the most physically uncomfortable Iâve felt in a very long time,â Mithrun said as he tugged at the ends of the fancy, over-decorated blouse the Canaries had put him in. âI honestly prefer Cithisâs frilly dresses.â
Which was saying something. Mithrun had a preference? That was a good sign.
âIt makes you look handsome,â Pattadol said.
âThe only thing it makes me is itchy,â he corrected.
The Canaries had somehow found a blouseâ not a shirt or tunic, a blouseâ that made Mithrun feel something other than indifference. He usually didnât care about what he wore, as long as it was comfortable, but the clothes theyâd stuffed him into were offensive to human-kind, like vegan bacon.
It had a big frill on the front and puffy sleeves. It was somehow both too flowy and too tight at the same time. The trousers werenât much better, digging into his legs. And the shoesâŚ
Mithrun didnât want to talk about the shoes.
It was clear to him that Fleki and Cithis had only contributed to the outfit because they thought it would be amusing. Good for them, he supposed. Pattadol seemed to genuinely like it, Otta looked horrified, and Lycion was in some in between state where he wanted to show pity but couldnât quite stifle his giggles.
âRemind me again what the point of this is?â Mithrun asked with a sigh.
âWe got them to agree to a date!â Pattadol said, grinning, âI said outright âitâs a dateâ so there would be no confusion. I made it clear that the date was with you. Now, if you show up looking like a million gold with a bouquet of flowers, theyâll get the hint.â
Mithrun did not want to do that.
Mithrun rarely wanted to do anything, but this just felt wrong. In his opinion, the relationship between you and him would develop naturally in a way that fit both of your personalities. He didnât mind waiting for you to realize his intentions, he had time. As long as you didnât fall in love with someone else, and didnât stop him from staring at you or touching you, then he wasnât in a rush.
But since the Canaries insisted, seeming to think that this was the right course of action, he would go along with it. Maybe it would be an utter disaster and Pattadol would realize that she knew very little about relationshipsâ especially a relationship involving Mithrun. He was aware enough of himself to know that it wouldnât be conventional.
With his hair pulled back into a tight ponytail and the ridiculous outfit on, Mithrun entered the restaurant Pattadol had chosen. He found you immediately. You sat in a chair with your elbow on the table and your ankles crossed, waiting.
Mithrun held a bouquet of pink roses as he approached. You lit up when you saw him, but your brows then furrowed.
âWhereâs Pattadol?â You asked.
His stride faltered, âShe isnât coming.â
âOh,â you shrugged, âwell since she set this up I assumed sheâd be here.â
Why would she be here? It was a date Pattadol had set up for you and Mithrun specifically.
You probably didnât know it was a date, he realized. Pattadol thought sheâd been clear by saying âitâs a dateâ but failed to realize that that was just a common phrase among people and meant nothing to no one.
Calm, he slid into the seat across from you and watched as you raised a brow, âWhatâre you wearing?â You asked.
âMy team picked it out for me.â
âYou look like youâre part of an opera or a ballet, like youâre about to stand beneath a balcony and start spouting poetry to your lover.â
That was a good description, actually. Those were the words Mithrun had been looking for earlier when he saw himself in the mirror.
He nodded, âYep.â Then, wordlessly, he held out the bouquet to you.
Your eyes widened, âFor me?â
âIâm handing them to you, arenât I?â
Gingerly, you took the flowers and held the stem of the wrapped bouquet with both hands as you inspected each petal.
A flicker of surprising satisfaction ran through his chest. You liked the flowers. It made sense, most people liked flowers, even if he didnât see why.
You dipped your head down toward them presumably to smell them, but your lips then parted and you dug your teeth into the nearest rose.
Mithrun froze.
You chewed on the rose, your nose wrinkling in disgust. You gave the flower a good shot, a proper taste, but it didnât take long until you grabbed a napkin and spit up the pink slobbery mess into it.
âSorry,â you sent him an apologetic smile and tried to hand the bouquet back to him, âthey donât taste that good, and I donât think I could season or cook them in a way that would help.â
Mithrun knew he was staring. He knew he was making a face, slightly tilting his head down, intensity in his eye. The kind of face someone made when they were internally screaming.
He was not internally screaming, but he was thinkingâ about you, how your brain worked. And how it was so damn charming for some reason and all he wanted to do was kiss you until he was all you could think about.
He wanted something. The feeling was sweet, a shot of adrenaline, one of Flekiâs drugs. Addictive. Like the slow drip of honey. He could survive off that want for ages.
Wordlessly, Mithrun threw the bouquet over his shoulder to get rid of it. Judging by the gasp that followed, it probably hit someone in the head.
Loving you was as natural to him as breathing.
- Mithrun decides to not let the Canaries interfere any longer. He was wrong earlier in thinking he needed their help. He doesnât.
- Also, watching them go insane over your obliviousness and his lack of communication provides a good bit of entertainment.
- When he finally decides to give into that all-consuming, new, exciting desire and kiss you, your response is, âBut I wasnât casting a spell, no reason to try and stop me.â
- God, he adores you.
- He takes kisses whenever he wants them, with no care about what you think his intention is.
- After a certain kiss that involves tongue and teeth and fingers digging into your waist, you start to openly wonder⌠Are you in a relationship with Mithrun?
âYes,â Mithrun didnât even glance up at you, remaining unphased by your rather serious question, âWeâre in a relationship.â
He continued to jot down notes about a monster he saw, as if heâd just casually answered a question about the weather. âIs it going to rain today?â âYeah looks like it.â
You gulped, âHow long?â
âA year now,â he kept writing. Truthfully, heâd been expecting this. A flash of disappointment crossed his mind; there goes one of his hobbies, watching the Canaries have a crisis over his love life.
You buried your face in your hands. Mithrun stopped writing and patted your head as if comforting a dog.
- The Canaries are pleased that this is over. But actually, theyâre going to have to watch you not realize it when youâre engaged to the Captain.
- At your wedding youâre in regular clothes. Someone asks why and you say âMithrun told me weâre going to a wedding. He didnât say it was ours.â

The Hazbin Hotel fandomâs issue with accepting aromanticism and asexuality
Now that it is officially Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, I want to talk about this!
I find that, as an aroace myself, I am constantly grasping at good representation and coming up emptyâ it usually ends up in one of two ways.
One: the character is portrayed as emotionless, cold, and robotic in nature. Itâs the question aromantic and/or asexual people are often asked: âAre you heartless?â The answer is no, of course, but general media makes it out to be the opposite.
Or two: Their lack of attraction is seen as something to âfixâ because they âhavenât found the right one yetâ, and they end up with a partner as a âhappy endingâ.
It frustrates me greatly because of how little people actually see aromanticism or asexuality as a true part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
So when I watched Hazbin Hotel, and I found out about Alastor being aroace, I was over the moon. I was on cloud nine. I also saw how his voice actor has looked up the term as an attempt to learn about aroaces, which makes me OVERJOYED?? Amir is truly a blessing, and I love that heâs proud to embody a character thatâs part of our community. Itâs so beautiful to finally have a proper character, a fan favorite at that, who just so happens to be aroaceâ and thatâs another thing I love about this.
Itâs never explicitly stated in the show (though it is stated in interviews), but itâs rather clear when youâre watching, isnât it? Alastorâs aversion to any sort of sexual advancement, coupled with Rosieâs blatant âI know youâre an ace in the holeâ comment sort of spell out his asexuality pretty clearly, as well as what side of the spectrum he falls upon. In addition, his Valentineâs day card was strictly platonic, which caters to his aromantic side. It feels so validating to finally be represented, to finally have a character in media who shares the same lack of interest in romance and sex as I do.
When I entered the fandom to look for more content, I kind of expected to see the same respect for Alastorâs orientation there too. But that⌠wasnât the case? I am fully aware that aromanticism and asexuality are both spectrumsâ of course, aromantic and/or asexual people can enter those kinds of relationships. Iâm not denying that and they belong in the community as much as anyone else on the spectrum.
But, the more I see the same line again and again and again, the more it feels like an excuse to just ship what you want.
Usually I donât mind shipping? Iâm often a firm believer in people shipping what they like as long as itâs harmless and they donât go crazy over it. I also know for a fact that Viv doesnât have a problem with people shipping her characters. They are fictional, after all.
But in this case, people are ignoring the very thing that makes Alastor a part of the aroace community! People are ignoring his lack of romantic or sexual attraction!
Is this not the same as changing a gay characterâs orientation to suit a straight ship? If not, how so? Iâm told that we are a part of this community, so why arenât we being treated like it? Why is it so hard to accept the people on the end of the spectrum who arenât interested?
Something Iâve been noticing throughout my life is that society has not exactly progressed very much on the idea of accepting asexual or aromantic identities. Maybe we have, a little, since the old daysâ but hell, people in âthe old daysâ, which in truth wasnât very long ago, believed that asexuality was a medical condition to be âfixedâ by taking the right medication or having sex. Thatâs a pretty low bar to clear. And on the romance side, youâre seen as a âlate bloomerâ or âboringâ if you donât express interest. These days, being friends with someone is treated like a gateway to them possibly becoming a lover. Not getting married, not going on dates, not wanting a partnerâ itâs all treated like a crime when itâs not.
Maybe Iâm selfish, or sensitive, or Iâm butthurt over nothing, or Iâm making it all about me. Maybe Iâm gatekeeping or whatever the term is. But please, please, please, I just want an aroace character like me who simply is not interested in sex or romance.
And I want fandom to respect that. I admire the creations that fans makeâ the art, the animatics, the writing and the character analysis. And I want people to keep creating because creation is indeed a beautiful thing.
But I really would like people to treat aroace identities like theyâre important. Like itâs more than just a spectrum to get wiggle room to wrangle in another ship.
#aromantism#aromantic#aroace#asexual#hazbin hotel#alastor#hazbin alastor#lgbtqia#alastor aroace#PLEASE i just want people to LEAVE HIM ALONE#âbut itâs a spectrumâ STOP USING IT AS AN EXCUSE#RESPECT AROACE PEOPLE WITH ZERO INTEREST IN ROMACE AND SEX#let us have this#we barely get anything as it is#but just to clarify i donât believe that most people are being intentionally rude about it#nor am i discouraging people from creating fan content because it is FAN CONTENT and you can express yourself#i just would like people to understand a little more that#yes it is a spectrum and it covers an extremely wide range of orientations#yes ANYONE who identities as someone on the spectrum is completely valid#if you wanna argue with that i am showing you the door and kicking your sorry aphobic ass out#my point is that the spectrum is not a loophole. it is not an excuse and it is NOT okay to just use it willy nilly for your convenience

I'm honestly just looking to rant and this might be long depending on how fast I get irritated the more I type so if this isn't coherent or well written I apologize in advance. Since it looks like Ambessa will take on a more antagonistic role in arcane season two, I would like to unpack the fandom's antiblackness that you guys are either blind to or aware and too pussy to call it out as my gut is telling me it's gonna increase and if no one is gonna start the difficult conversation then I sure as hell will.
Sevika:
Mel:
Starting off strong with the definition of "you guys want complex female characters but can't even handle her". Mel Medarda is in quite the predicament seeing how she's morally grey, a black woman, AND "gets in the way" of a mlm ship so she was kinda screwed from the start. A cunning politician disowned for her pacifism who acts as a sort of bridge to Noxus' slow introduction, and is THE ONLY CHARACTER IN THE SEASON 1 MAIN CAST SPECIFICALLY CREATED FOR THE SHOW. She's treated like satan incarnate or a Jezebel (highly suggest looking into that if you don't know what that is), GOOD character analysis is rare, and when she is talked about positively, it's so often chalked up to appearances that I'd rather yall not talk about her at all. Oh you love Mel? Then can we talk about her relationship with her mother? Unpack her dynamic with Jayce? Maybe more fanworks centered around her? I've seen yall's fake asses dropping the shittiest fucking takes about her only to turn around and gush over how pretty she is, and yall think you're slick about it and you're not. I would say I prefer the ones who are loud and proud about their hatred but that'd be a lie, they're two cheeks on the same ass; annoying and couldn't give a decent break down of her character if a gun was pointed at they head even she's perfect to dissect. I could talk about her more but we'd be here all day and so many black women even from outside the fanbase have already talked about yall so there's no need for me to add on đ¤ˇđžââď¸đ¤ˇđžââď¸đ¤ˇđžââď¸đ¤ˇđžââď¸.
Quick question, have you guys ever tried to talk about her in a non sexual way? Yes, Sevika is undeniably sexy and you could argue that true stans of hers talk about her outside of horny time, but a good half of the fandom is a different story. In a similar case to Mel's, deep dives into her character are rare to find which is crazy when she acts as Zaun's own "kingmaker". She's loyal to her city and the cause, never to a specific person and will not hesitate to betray you. She could be your right hand man one day, and the next she might find a better kingpin to follow and stab you in the back like it all meant nothing. "Were you tempted?" "Not for a worm like him". Simple and subtle and probably my favorite Sevika scene; she comes to realize Silco is no longer the best leader for Zaun, but he's as good as it gets for now and so she sticks by him. I remember a YouTube comment breaking down how she's essentially the quintessential Zaun: a brute warrior molded by her environment, who defied Vander's peaceful ways and embraced Silco's cruelty. Her mindset and goal is interesting and you'd think it'd result in some fascinating meta or exploration of her upbringing when we got a hint that she potentially has some daddy issues right? Obviously, but what do we get instead? White sapphics treating her like nothing more than a sexual object. How delightful!
Ekko:
This might partially be Riot's fault because â and I hate to sound like a league lore nerd â Ekko is quite underdeveloped compared to the richer origins of his former pre arcane self, but I'm gonna hold off on that till the season finale to see how they handle him. Anyways, at this point the fandom clearly sees him as Jinx's trophy husband. When you talk about him, she is brought into the convo 90% of the time. That's exactly why I prefer black timebomb shippers over the nonblack ones because I trust they actually love Ekko as a character on his own. Even though I have my complaints regarding how's been written so far, I still know he's too good to be reduced to Jinx's loverboy. He fights and cares for his city, the only character that you can confidently say is pure of heart, and is the revolutionary leader Zaun really needs. He's just as smart as Jinx too, he is literally going to create TIME TRAVEL. Why does no one wanna talk about that? Can we be excited for his character development and arc not just for the timebomb scenes you'll get out of it?
Ambessa:
Can't even deny this woman is awful but her presence on screen enthralled me after a couple of rewatches and I also love bad mothers in media so I've settled on a love/hate relationship. Yes, she's definitely gonna have some influence on Caitlyn, which makes sense since she has now lost her mother; she's vulnerable and as we have seen, naive. She's practically free real estate for Ambessa. My recent worry though has been how the fandom seems to be willing to put all of Caitlyn's actions on her as if Cait isn't a grown ass woman who can make her own decisions. Of course being grown doesn't mean you're immune to manipulation, but I've seen some Silco and Jinx comparisons and it is NOT the same. Mind you we haven't even seen the first three episodes; we don't know how far Ambessa's manipulation is going to go and we can't really tell what the dynamic is gonna be like based off of clips and trailers that are likely shown out of context on purpose to throw people off. I'll never defend her actions, hell I'll join in on the lashings, but my black ass is also not gonna sit here and let yall talk about her weirdly or pin all of this on her.
Some might say I'm overthinking this, but I've been here since November 2021 and have sat back and observed for 2 years. You don't have to write deep, philosophical conversations 24/7, I'm sure it's not all in bad faith and I won't act like I don't thirst over Sevika or marvel at Mel's beauty. I'm not saying you have to like these characters and that you're racist if you don't. My frustration comes from the lack of nuanced conversations and hypocritical opinions surrounding black characters in this show. When you try to say something about this, you're hit with excuses; it reminds me of how man obsessed fujoshis act when they're questioned for not giving two fucks about female characters. They're either reduced to one character trait, only admired for their looks, or only discussed when it's about the white character they're connected to. Do NOT under ANY circumstance be black and morally ambiguous, you WILL be held to higher moral standards than everyone's wittle blorbos who can do wrong and are defended from all sides when you dare to take the rose colored stan glasses off and criticize them. What's really ridiculous is you hear the "complex characters" bullshit every two to three business days and some of you have the nerve to boast about this series being diverse while simultaneously ignoring the complexities in the characters of color. This is the main reason I took a step back and with season two around the corner I thought "Hey, maybe it'll be better this time!" and it was a mistake. Good to know yall still have an underlying racism problem you don't wanna address but with some extra classism thrown in. "What will we do once Arcane ends?" hopefully get a job, touch some grass, and reflect. Lord knows yall need it. The faster yall sizzle out the better. I'm done that's all I have to say lol goodnight đđ˝đđ˝đđ˝đđ˝.

ROTTEN: Behind The Foodfight
youtube
Holy chips! It's an exciting time to be a Foodfight! fan, because ROTTEN: Behind The Foodfight is finally out! This really is THE definitive documentary on the insanity behind the movie, and it finally answers the question of just what was going on behind the scenes during production. Since I helped out with research (and I even get a short line of dialogue at 45:19) I've already seen everything that was shown off, but had to keep quiet until all the interviews were conducted and the documentary was finished. But now it's out and everything has been made public, the cat's out of the bag (the Fat Cat Burglar?) and I can talk about all the production material that's been shared.
Before I get into any of that though, I'd highly recommend you watch the documentary for yourself. It's insanely well researched and put together, and having worked together with Ziggy Cashmere (the documentary's creator) I know how hard he dedicated himself towards making this all possible. If it weren't for him, the most interesting Foodfight! discovery would've been finding the novelization, and we would have never gotten any real insight into how this movie came to be. It's also a documentary that really speaks for itself- I don't want to say too much about what it reveals since it's all expressed far better through its narrative and the interviews with people who actually worked on the project. My favorite is the interview with texture artist Mona Weiss- she tells such horrifying stories about how she was treated by Larry and other crewmembers, yet does it all with a sense of humor that makes it clear she's enjoying getting to talk about her crazy experiences. It's clear Foodfight! was an unmitigated disaster from start to finish, and there's nobody to blame for that but Larry Kasanoff himself. The movie was rotten from the top down and despite the countless talented animators and artists working on it, nothing could fix the fact that it was fundamentally mismanaged in the worst way possible. I think the quote from producer George Johnsen summarizes it best: "Foodfight! was a good idea that unfortunately lost its way during production. The technology, the art, and the direction were not in sync. Many very talented people gave their all to make the picture, but more understanding of process from the top was needed for it to succeed."
But if you saw the documentary, you already know all that, right? So instead, let's talk about the behind-the-scenes material that's finally been shared! You can find everything I'll talking about HERE on archive.org-
It's worth following the link and checking it out for yourself- there's so much it'd impossible to discuss everything. Artwork, storyboards, bloopers, models, a nude render of Lady X, an interview with Larry Kasanoff, the list goes on and it's still being updated! Despite the documentary already being out, people who worked on the movie are continuing to share new material! It's pretty incredible- for the past year I've ran this blog all I've really had to discuss are two tie-in books, and now there's so much Foodfight! material I can't even keep up with it.
I mean LOOK at all this, isn't it fantastic? The character art by Jim George showing off just how much better these designs originally were, the countless environments showing off just how stunning Marketropolis could've looked as well as the strength of the core idea "what if a supermarket came to life at night", and insanely detailed storyboards for a 7-minute pitch reel that was used to sell the movie to investors. Normally, I'd be ALL OVER this because it's all just incredible, but there's something far, FAR more fascinating than any of it.
There are even multiple drafts of the script (one from 2005 and one from 2007 respectively) and normally I'd be insanely fascinated by those too, making extremely detailed posts explaining the differences between the drafts and how they compare to the novelization, but there's something else that was found that blows ALL of this out of the water and is easily one of the most monumental lost media discoveries of ALL TIME.
youtube
That's right, a rough cut of the ENTIRE movie from 2005 has been found, containing nearly ALL the completed animation from earlier on in production. I mean, that's mindblowing right? We first got sent this around a month ago, a little while before the documentary came out, and I literally stopped everything I was doing at work to just sit and watch this. This is the closest we're ever going to get to the "original" version of Foodfight! after all- only 7 minutes of footage was ever actually made before they switched to mocap, made solely for the aforementioned pitch reel, and this workprint contains practically all of it! On top of that there are some great storyboards in here, as well as some truly hilarious ones cobbled together from 3D renders, and the plot is far better than what we ended up with, a lot of the more inappropriate jokes being absent. This rough cut is actually pretty similar to the novelization in that regard, and it also contains scenes that we'd previously only read about in there.
For example, in the novelization there's a snowmobile chase through the mountains, with Brand X soldiers on snowmobiles and a heavy avalanche close behind. This scene was completely left out of the movie itself, but in this workprint it's here! ALL the previously novelization-exclusive scenes are included, and this rough cut is seemingly based on an even earlier draft of the script than that- here Brand X are still defeated by a flood, whereas by the time of the novelization it'd been changed to a lightning storm. There are SO many exciting differences in this workprint, the snippets of original animation we get to see are SO good, and it's SO much better than the movie itself that I think it by far deserves the crown as the DEFINITIVE version of Foodfight! There's so much in it I want to discuss, that there's no way I can fit it all into this one post...so stay tuned, because in the next few days I'll be doing a FULL analysis of the 2005 workprint, pointing out all the extra brand mascots not in the finished film, and generally just gushing about how amazing it is.
I mean, this is it. Just take it all in for a second- the original footage was considered lost media for over a decade, and now it's practically been found in its entirety, embedded in an early cut of the whole movie...isn't that just phenomenal? All the mysteries have been unraveled, all the questions have been answered, and now we can relax, take a deep breath, and watch Foodfight!...the REAL Foodfight! Make sure to enjoy it, and join me next time for my analysis!

Derry Girls: A Masterclass in Detailed, Thematic Writing
Several years after the end, I finally watched Derry Girls, and it's become one of my favorite shows. Not only for the way it captures the absolutely unhinged aspects of Irish families (askmehowiknow) but for the sheer writing skill.
The vast majority of the episodes are laugh-out-loud hilarious, while also offering insightful commentary on the Troubles and on humanity's foibles as a whole. The characters are allowed to be human and act in unlikable, unsanitized ways, and to still be human and come back from that. (Almost like a metaphor for the Troubles or something.)
The story is also incredibly detailed; for example, when the girls are accused of killing a nun and Erin points out the nun was like, 98 years old and askes "might that shed some light on the situation?" there's an hourglass behind Sister Michael--emphasizing the idea that her time was up. Even more than that... the window is behind the hourglass, literally shining a light on it.
But that's a micro level. On a macro level, I also appreciated the way the story discusses the political backdrop that is part of its premise. Even as Erin, Michelle, James, Clare, and Orla grow up in a place that's been in a state of low-level warfare for decades, they live full lives. In fact, that's kinda the point.
Case in point: episode 4 of the first season, wherein Erin gets an exchange student from Chernobyl. The way the Northern Irish in general treat the Ukrainians is hilariously awful and patronizing, believing that they are giving them a respite from the troubles "over there" while Northern Ireland isn't in a much better state. But, as Sister Michael assures the Ukrainian students, the Irish troubles don't matter because "we're the goodies."
This line gets to the heart of what the episode is saying about political divisions and the way people view an "other." Everyone sees themselves as the "goodies." Because of that, they don't self-examine and wind up hurting the people they see themselves as wanting to help/save with their ignorance. It's a paradoxical egotistical (and frankly teenage) worldview that is also unwilling to look critically at oneself. The focus on their own perceptions over focusing on the actual humanity of the other results in ruining gifts that could come with cross-culture interaction, as seen in how Erin's misunderstandings and petty jealousy of Katya leads to her literally ruining a surprise gift Katya had prepared.
And the end of the episode also comments thematically on the story. One of the Ukrainian boys turns out not to be Ukrainian after all--he's actually Irish and from just down the road. He just didn't know how to say that. The ironic message is clear: despite differences in culture and views, they are actually all human beings, and assumptions make it hard for people to speak. If they could actually talk openly and without presumptions about who is "good" and who is "bad," they could prevent and solve a lot of problems.
This kind of background, symbolic commentary on the Troubles continues in just about every episode of the series. For example, even after the ceasefire, season 3 has an episode where it's discussed how negotiations are stalling, and the entirely of the rest of the episode takes place on a train that stalls between two separate places.
The Troubles are always something affecting their lives, but the only time the Troubles ever become the main story is in the finale episode. Which is also an episode that makes everyone cry. Michelle's brother is finally mentioned for the first time the entire series, yet it doesn't feel like a retcon so much as a recontextualization, and again mirrors how a lot of society (and Michelle's own family) have treated those who murdered others during the conflict.
Erin and James' relationship also works as a metaphor for the Troubles--an Irish Catholic girl and an English boy. Earlier in season 3, after they finally kiss, they're told they can't be together, that it's wrong, and that it'll create problems for everyone around them. Michelle doesn't want things to change. And Erin agrees that it's not good to pursue something.
But, in the final scenes, as Erin prepares to vote in the Good Friday Agreement and talks to James, she directly states she thinks things can't stay the same forever--thereby countering what she said to reject James earlier:
There's a part of me that wishes everything could just stay the same. That we could all just stay like this forever. There's a part of me that doesn't really want to grow up. I'm not sure I'm ready for it. I'm not sure I'm ready for the world. But things can't stay the same, and they shouldn't. No matter how scary it is, we have to move on, and we have to grow up, because things... well, they might just change for the better. So we have to be brave. And if our dreams get broken along the way... we have to make new ones from the pieces.
Symbolically, also, given that we know the outcome of the Good Friday Agreement, I think it's pretty clear Erin and James end up together even if we're not directly shown it.
That the last shot of the episode (besides the funny epilogue) is Grandda Joe, one of the eldest characters, helping his youngest toddler granddaughter Anna leap over a threshold as they leave the voting station, is also incredibly clear in its symbolism.
Erin: People died. Innocent people died, Grandda. They were someone's mother, father, daughter, son. Nothing can ever make that okay. And the people who took those lives, they're just gonna walk free? What if we do it, and it's all for nothing? What if we vote yes and it doesn't even work? Grandda Joe: And what if it does? What if no one else has to die? What if this all becomes a--a ghost story you'll tell your wee-un's some day? A ghost story they'll hardly believe?
I dunno, I think this is a sentiment we need more of in the world. A peaceful future means taking risks and accepting that punitive justice will not be perfectly doled out; however, if you allow more people to be hurt, is that not also injustice? It's a paradox that the story leaves us without a dogmatic answer to (for example, we never find out if Michelle's brother gets released), but it's also hopeful--because we know that the Good Friday Agreement largely worked.
(For further analysis of the final scene, I recommend PillarofGarbage's analysis on YouTube!)

(Y/Nâs POV)
Y/N began her rehabilitation training within one week of awakening from her coma.
For those seven days of rest, Y/N had fielded all sorts of visitors â the Master, escorted by his two daughters; the Love Pillar, who had wasted no time throwing her arms around Y/Nâs shoulders and sobbing in relief; and three of the Mansionâs youngest girls, all of whom crawled up on her bed and cried while hugging her.
Uzui had sent her a note by crow telling her he would be by to see her as soon as his wives finished making her favorite treat â red bean mochi â and said they could compare battle wounds in celebration of their feat.
Y/N had neither seen nor heard as much of a whisper from the Flame Pillar.
The Ice Pillar resolved to distract herself from the glaring absence of the man who embodied fire, though every day that passed without word from him only seemed to make that absence more pronounced.
Y/N had thrown herself into her rehabilitation training, as supervised by Shinobu. Because she was a Hashira, her recovery was vastly different from that of lower-ranked slayers, and she worked with the Insect Pillar directly, rather than with the haughty Aoi and other younger Mansion girls.
That particular morning, the Love Pillar had joined them in an effort to recuperate Y/Nâs loss of flexibility as the result of the nearly two months sheâd spent sedentary. Y/N cherished the one-on-one time she had with the other two women Hashira; the three of them had formed a tight bond with one another since ascending as Pillars, united amidst the predominance of male demon slayers. Â
âGood! Now just bend this way-â Mitsuri Kanroji kept a steady hand at the small of Y/Nâs back as Y/N arched over backward, teeth grinding as her stiff spine resisted her movement.
âAlmost there! Just touch your other hand to the floor and hold it!â The Love Hashira said encouragingly.
Y/N stretched her left arm over her head as hard as she could. Her fingers had just graced the wooden grain of the training room floor when her body seized, and her legs gave out from under her.
âOh!â Mitsuri caught Y/N effortlessly before she could crumple to the floor, gently helping her to sit while blushing at the stream of colorful curses that poured from the Ice Pillarâs mouth. Â
âThis damn wound,â Y/N moaned, her hand pressing against the angry red mark that curved from below her belly button to her right hip. âYou would think it would have healed by now.â
Shinobu frowned as she crouched next to the Ice Pillar, fingers lightly prodding at the scar left behind by Upper Moon Six. âIt has healed; if it hadnât, it wouldnât have scarred already.â Shinobu pursed her lips. âThough, I suppose it could just be a residual effect of the Upper Rankâs blood demon art â after all, it was no ordinary blade that he pierced you with, was it?â
Y/N shook her head, though she tried to suppress the memory of the demonâs cursed flesh blade ramming through her back and into her stomach. âThe blade was his conduit for his blood demon art â but I think it was made from him.â
âHow often does it hurt, Y/N?â Mitsuri asked, rubbing soothing circles on her friendâs upper back. Mitsuri was one of the few people Y/N knew who preferred to give physical comfort, and Y/N was grateful for it.
Y/N furrowed her brows in thought. âIn a way, thereâs always just this dull ache I feel, though it becomes sharper whenever I move a particular way.â Y/N pulled at the band of her uniform bottoms in discomfort. âAnd, it doesnât help that these damn pants chafe and rub against it. Iâve even foregone the belt, and it still feels like theyâre cutting into me.â
Mitsuri hummed in thought. âHave you considered one of the uniform skirts? They sit a little higher on the waist, so theyâre less likely to aggravate it.â
Y/N scowled. âI would rather be stabbed by Upper Six again than request a skirt from that pervert tailor,â she said severely, âSorry,â she added when she saw the Love Pillar flush with embarrassment.
âLecherous Corps tailors aside, you may have a good point, Mitsuri.â Shinobu said, eyeing Y/Nâs uniform pants in thought. âY/N, do you mind if I brainstorm some designs for you? I canât promise whatever I come up with will be suitable for public appearances or assignments, but I might be able to come up with something that will at least keep you comfortable while you heal and build back your strength.â
Y/N smiled as she stretched her legs out, bringing herself into a pose meant to flex her hips. âIâd be grateful for anything you could do, Shinobu.â
The Insect Pillar nodded. âMitsuri, you know how to sew quite well, do you not? Iâm afraid my proficiency with the needle is limited to sewing up wounds.â
The pinkette glowed with enthusiasm. âYes! I have an entire room dedicated to sewing at my Estate â if you bring by your designs, Iâm sure I could put something together!â
Shinobu smiled. âThen itâs settled. Iâll see what I can come up with tonight, and Iâll bring it by in the morning.â
Y/Nâs heart swelled at the dedication her two friends showed towards her comfort and recovery. âThank you both, from the bottom of my heart.â
Shinobuâs smile turned wicked. âDonât thank us yet, Y/N. You have agility training next.â
Y/N groaned and pulled on her uniform top, buttoning it over her bindings. As a Hashira, agility training meant that she was to meet the Wind Pillar outside of Kochoâs estate where she would endure two hours of having to dodge his relentless attacks. Y/N got along just fine with Shinazugawa â heâd even welcomed her back, and gruffly complimented her work in the Entertainment District â but that did not mean he eased up in his ruthless training. Â
By the time the Wind Pillar had dismissed her with a satisfied nod, Y/N had all but limped back to her room, wondering whether she could even summon the strength to bathe after such an arduous day. She almost decided against it, but when her newest scar began to pulse and throb once more, she knew nothing else would soothe it better than the hot water in Kochoâs private hot spring.
Y/N greeted the bowing Kakushi who guarded the entrance to the northernmost wing of the Butterfly Mansionâs hospital as she passed by, and she hoped that Aoi had remembered to restock her room with fresh towels so she could go straight to her bath from her room.
She drew short at the sight of a familiar figure which stood outside of Kochoâs office, leaning against the wall of the small hallway.
âRengoku!â Y/N was startled, taking a step back in surprise at the sight of the Flame Pillar.
âY/L/N.â The man who reminded her of the sun nodded in greeting, but his familiar, sunny disposition was noticeably absent, his face impassive and his voice detached.
âI am happy to see you in good health.â Rengoku spoke with unnatural formality; heâd never used that cold, detached manner of speaking to her, not once since sheâd caught him staring at her right before the commencement of Final Selection all those years ago.
--------------------------------------------------------
âIce Pillar Y/L/N!â His sunny voice boomed, and Y/N groaned. Sheâd just gotten her migraine to calm down.
âRengoku,â she nodded politely, as her comrade came to stand beside her, all smiles and warmth.Â
âItâs been a while, Y/L/N! I was beginning to forget what you look like when you roll your eyes at me.â He laughed, and Y/N scowled.
âPerhaps Iâll pay to have my photograph taken, Rengoku. That way, you can carry it with you wherever you go.â
Rengoku turned to her, an eyebrow raised in surprise at her willingness to engage with his banter so quickly. âIf thatâs the case, Y/N, Iâd prefer to have one of you smiling. It would do well to keep me warm on those cold nights away from home.â
--------------------------------------------------------
âI heard you were called away on another missionâ some train?â Y/N asked him as they strolled through the Masterâs garden following their meeting.
âYes, weâve unfortunately lost a number of slayers. Perhaps itâs an upper rank!â The Flame Pillar responded jovially, but he stopped in front of Y/N when he saw her frown.
âWhat is it?â His voice was gentle, and Y/N shook her head, focusing her eyes on the blooming wisteria saplings that had been planted.
A warm finger curled under her chin and tilted her face up until her eyes clashed with pools of golden ore. âMy dear Ice Pillar, are you worried for me?â He was smirking, and his thumb lightly caressed the underside of her jaw.
Y/N gingerly took his hand and removed it from her face, though she did not let it go right away. âYou are the Flame Hashira, Rengoku. If anyone is capable of defeating an Upper Rank, it most certainly is you.âÂ
Rengoku smiled broadly at her, his hand nearly grazing her own. âFor someone whose prowess lies in ice breathing, Y/L/N, you sure know how to start fires.â
Under any other circumstance, she would have changed the subject, or not said anything at all. But Y/N couldnât help her sudden desire to flirt back, just to see if she could knock him off his feet as he so often tried to do to her.
âYours is the only one Iâm interested in stoking, Rengoku.â She said sweetly.
Sheâd laughed at the Flame Pillarâs beet-red face for the rest of the day.
------------------------------------------------------
âAnd I, you.â Y/N responded, her eyes still wide with surprise as she came to a stop before him, maintaining a cautious distance between them.
A pregnant pause followed, and Y/N made to speak once more, but she was cut off by another deep throb from the wound on her lower abdomen, her hand unconsciously flying to press against it as she swallowed the gasp that threatened to leave her. Â Â
âYouâre in pain.â It wasnât a question.
Y/N shrugged in a feeble attempt at nonchalance. âI suppose itâs to be expected for a while yet. At least until I recover.â
Rengoku said nothing, and the silence felt suffocating.
âWould you-â Y/N hesitated, and inwardly sheâd never felt more embarrassed, or more uncertain than she did then as she stood before the uncharacteristically stoic Flame Pillar. âWould you like to sit down?â
Rengokuâs face remained impassive, and he turned away from her, dismissively.
âI cannot. I came only to retrieve a salve from Kocho.â His voice was just as cold, just as unfamiliar as the rest of him had been.
âRengoku, is everything all right?â She stretched out a hand to touch his shoulder but was alarmed at how quickly he flinched away from her as if her touch could burn him.
âEverything is fine, Y/L/N. I need to be on my way.â Rengokuâs voice was flat, monotone, and wholly foreign to her.
âIâm sorry for not thanking you sooner â for everything you did to help me that night.â Y/N blurted, and to her relief, Rengoku froze mid-step, though he did not turn towards her. âI owe you my life.â
She did not miss the way Rengokuâs fists clenched at his side. âYou owe me nothing. I would have done the same for any other comrade.â He replied, voice tight. âI must get going now. Farewell, Y/L/N.
She was so stunned that sheâd not bidden him farewell back. Rather, sheâd stood helplessly in her doorway, even long after the edge of his haori had disappeared around the corner of the Butterfly Mansionâs hall.
He had not looked at her once.
-------------------------------------------------------
(Kyojuroâs POV)
Kyojuroâs fists remained clenched the entire journey back to his estate.
He felt disgusted with himself. He felt like a coward.
It had nearly knocked him to his knees to see Y/L/N up and standing and talking because for so long, he had feared he would never again see the way she crinkled her nose when she laughed, or how she tucked that one loose strand of hair behind her ear whenever she was concentrating â the one that never stayed put in her braid.
But he had not been able to meet her eyes; couldnât bear to bring himself to try, because he had been terrified of what he would see.
-------------------------------------------------------
Every night for the last two months, he has dreamed of her.
They were not pretty dreams, not like those he had before when heâd wrap her in his arms and kiss her until she laughed, the two of them living in a monster-free world and at peace.
Now, he dreamt of vacant eyes-tinged blue, unseeing and unblinking and frozen, just like the rest of her. He dreams of iced skin and blood and poison pouring from her mouth and her nose until she chokes, her chest rising once with a final rattle before it falls still.
He dreams of Upper Three, smiling deviously as he aims his fist to deal his final blow, and Kyojuro wrenches his blade down, desperate to finally win.
Only, his blade decapitates Y/N, not the Upper Rank demon and he is helpless to watch her head bounce pathetically to the ground. His hands are covered in her blood, and instead of disintegrating, her body falls uselessly to the side. Human.
As quickly as he kills her, the dream changes. He is in a lively street, filled to the brim with street vendors and women and men offering their services. It is night but the lights of the shops and gambling dens and pleasure houses are so bright that it looks like daytime.
He recognizes her by the back of her haori, and his feet move towards her, relieved to see her amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. He reaches out to touch her shoulder, her name whispering on his lips. But she turns before he can make contact, and though she looks healthy, her eyes â her eyes are white and unseeing.
I donât understand, she pleads with him, it doesnât make sense.
Kyojuro looks around in alarm and they are no longer standing amongst eager entertainment seekers, but among flame and wreckage, the once-ornately decorated stalls now smashed to splinters as fire slowly consumes the skeletal remains of the entertainment district.
He turns back to her right as a blade pierces through her gut, lifting her from the ground before letting her drop.
His hands shake as he reaches for her, desperate to check her wounds, but when she looks up at him, he stumbles back.
She is all wrong. Her skin is mottled and rotting from her face, and her hair is gray and matted. In place of her eyes are black holes, empty and cold.
Why canât I come with you? Why canât I go home, Kyojuro?
Please take me home.
Every night for the last two months, he awoke screaming.
------------------------------------------------------
Y/L/N was alive; he knew that. He knew that if he looked at her, he would not see a corpse; but terrifying visuals aside, Kyojuro had not been able to look at her because he knew what his nightmares were telling him.
Heâd been responsible for her near death.
If the Kakushi had returned with a box rather than a Pillar, it would have been his fault.
The thought that Y/L/N â his Y/L/N -- had almost obtained her own headstone in the Masterâs graveyard had rocked him to his very core, for that had almost become a reality. She had actually died â for the briefest moment â in his arms; and it had been his fault.
Why can't I go home, Kyojuro?
And though Y/N had awoken from her slumber, her corpse still haunted Kyojuroâs dreams.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Y/Nâs POV)
Y/N was sprawled on her infirmary floor, preparing her limbs for another day of rigorous recuperation training at the hands of her fellow Hashira.
She stood to stretch her arms and lower back, wincing slightly at the pull of her scar. âDonât you start,â she warned her body, willing total concentration breathing to dull the persistent ache that threatened to derail her entire day.
Y/N sensed movement near her doorway and knew, without looking, who watched her as she warmed up her aching muscles.
âUzui retired. Itâs time for you to do the same.â
Y/N who had been in mid-stretch, righted herself and blinked at the Flame Pillar. âPardon?â Both the news of Uzuiâs retirement and Rengokuâs words were a shock to her.
âRetire, Y/LN.â Rengoku repeated in that detached manner of his that she hardly recognized. âYou helped take down an Upper Rank. Youâve done enough. Let someone else shoulder the burden, now.â
âI see no reason to retire, Rengoku.â Y/N retorted, voice hardening. âAnd unless and until the Master requests it or I perish, I see no reason to do so.â
Rengoku exhaled harshly through his nose. âYou were injured â seriously so.â
âAs were you, and yet you seem to have no intention of slowing down.â Y/N said, coolly.
Rengokuâs attention stayed fixed on the garden outside her window. âAnd I was only unconscious for three weeks. You were out for nearly two months, Y/L/N. That is unheard of and frankly, unacceptable for a Hashira.â
âWhat is your problem?â Y/N was growing more irritated the longer this inane conversation dragged on, and it wasnât helping that Rengoku still refused to so much as look her direction, let alone meet her eyes. âIs this about what happened after you brought me here? Kocho told me everything â Iâm not mad.â
Rengokuâs shoulders tensed. âIt was necessary. Again, I would have done it for any one of my comrades.â
Y/N felt like sheâd been slapped.
âYou keep saying that, yet you wonât look at meâ why?â Her confusion and hurt were beginning to melt into anger. âIf I am just another comrade, then you should be able to meet my eyes.â
Rengoku said nothing.
âWhat Uzui did for meâ that was what comrades do,â Y/N continued, her voice growing stronger as her blood grew hotter. âBut you? You and I both know you were under no obligation to bring me back from the brink of death the way you did.â
âIâm not sure what you want me to say, Y/L/N,â Rengoku answered after a long moment.
Y/N took a step towards him. âI want to know why.â
âIt was necessary.â
Y/N felt like throttling him.
How long had they danced around each other? How many times had they caught themselves staring at the other for a breath longer than normal, had allowed an otherwise friendly touch during a spar linger?
How could he have held her, half nude for hours, putting himself on the brink of death all for the sake of keeping her alive â and then tell her she was the same as any other comrade?
âWhat are we doing Rengoku -- is this to be our destiny?â Y/N demanded, exasperatedly, her voice hard. âWe continue to pretend like we donât care about one another until one of us dies?â
Rengoku remained silent, back still turned away from her.
âWeâve each had a near-death experience in a matter of months,â Y/N continued, throat working hard to keep her voice steady despite the telling burn of angry tears in her eyes. âBy all accounts, one if not both of us should be dead.â
âAnd yet, somehow, you expect me to act as though the fact you carried me back hereâ that you put yourself on deathâs door to keep my heart beating â doesnât mean anything?â
It didnât make sense. It didnât make sense for him to fight so hard for her, to make her believe that someone valued her life that much, only to cast her aside.
She hadnât wanted to wake up, initially; sheâd felt relief for the hairâs breadth sheâd thought sheâd finally met her end. He was the one who dragged her back, and now he wouldnât even look at her.
It didnât make sense.
Y/Nâs fists shook beside her, and she felt the venomous words fly from her mouth before she could stop them.
âYou shouldâve let me die.â
No sooner had she let the poison drip from her mouth had she felt herself flying backward, back slamming against the nearest wall of her temporary room.
âNever,â Rengoku snarled at her, his arm pressing firmly against her shoulders to hold her in place against the wood. âNever say those words to me again.â
Y/Nâs chest was heaving, and she trembled beneath him, her fury threatening to explode out of her.
âThere is no place on this earth where you could be in peril and I would not find you,â he said quietly, his eyes a simmering, fiery orange. âWhere I wouldnât find a way to bring you back home.â
âThat doesnât make sense,â Y/N said softly, breath still coming hard from her nose but no longer from her anger.
âDoesnât it?â Rengoku was close, dangerously close.
Y/N wanted nothing more than to lean in, to close the distance that barely existed between Rengokuâs face and hers and finally be done with all the nonsense. But he had spent so much time avoiding her gaze until that moment, and Y/N felt more lost than ever, set adrift by the look of heat and longing that was mixed with the burning rage in his eyes.
Something tugged incessantly at her gut and it would not allow her to move from her place against her recovery roomâs wall.
Instead, her arms came up to rest against Rengokuâs chest before gently, but firmly, pushing him away.
âNo, it doesnât.â She repeated. âAnd I am tired, Rengoku.â
The Flame Pillar allowed himself to be pushed away, but he looked at her with a small, cruel smile.
âThen youâre right; it doesnât mean anything at all.â
She flinched against the ugly slap of his words. Y/N had expected him to hit back, but she hadnât anticipated his venom to sting as much as it did.
She felt all of the fight within her gutter out, leaving her with nothing but a heavy weight in her chest that she wished she couldnât feel.
âY/L/N, I-â the Flame Pillar almost sounded remorseful.
âThank you, for your clarification, Lord Rengoku,â she said numbly, formally, parroting his earlier tone with her. âAnd thank you for your assistance that night. Please, next time â donât trouble yourself.â
Rengoku hesitated for a moment, his hand twitching as though he wanted to reach for her. He swallowed hard, and turned away, shutting the door to Y/Nâs infirmary.
The moment the door at clicked shut, Y/N exhaled harshly, stumbling back against her bed as she hugged her arms around herself, and she tried to keep herself from falling apart.
It shouldnât have hurt this bad. They were both in the Demon Slayer Corps; they saved strangers all the time without it ever meaning anything other than good will and a desire to exterminate all demons.
So why did his insistence that she was no different hurt so badly?
Because she wasnât a stranger.
Because, while sheâd always known she wasnât his, sheâd still thought sheâd been something.
As Y/N curled against her blanket, an unsettling numbness began to spread from her heart, quieting even the dull ache from the scar across her belly, Y/N realized that sheâd meant nothing to the Flame Pillar all along.
-------------------------------------------------------
(Kyojuroâs POV)
He hated himself.
He utterly and truly despised himself.
Heâd been hurt by her insistence that she did not know his feelings even though he was the one whoâd opened the door, yet somehow, it still felt like a rejection.
So heâd hit back, only for her to visibly recoil at the sharp blow of his words.
He would not forgive himself, for as long as he lived, for the way the light in her eyes had winked out.
He did not know what bothered him more: the fact that sheâd assumed that he regretted keeping her alive, or that sheâd said ânext timeâ he neednât bother. As though she were counting on there being a next time.
He knew he should turn around; knew that he should barge back into her hospital room, drop to his knees, and beg her to forgive his cruelty.
He knew that he should explain to her why he found it so difficult to admit his feelings for her â that he had watched his father turn into a shell of a man and abandon his children in the wake of their motherâs death, leaving them to raise themselves. That he had vowed, as heâd watched his father drink his days away, that he would never be like him, would never abandon those who relied on him most.
Heâd promised that he would never be a coward, even if, in all honesty, the idea that he, Kyojuro, could ever love someone that fiercely only to have them ripped from his grasp terrified him to no end.
As he forced his legs to carry him to back to his estate, Kyojuro wondered if perhaps, in his desperation not to turn into his father, heâd become the old man after all.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Shinobuâs POV)
Shinobu felt the Flame Pillarâs presence in her office before she saw him, though she was in no rush to give him his salve, especially not after what sheâd overheard him spit at her friend.
âIf you do not mind, I would like to send my crow to collect this from here on,â Rengoku said tightly, and Shinobu could sense his failing attempt to keep his fury in check.
âVery well then,â the Insect Pillar responded just as tersely, turning away from the papers and books on her desk to pull out the small tin containing the salve the Flame Pillar used to soothe the ache of the scar he now bore across his pectoral and shoulder. Rather than handing it to him, she tossed it through the air, the Flame Hashira catching it swiftly in his hand.
Rengoku nodded his thanks and turned to leave.
âI didnât realize it was against Corpsâ rules to care about our comrades,â Shinobu said icily, if not to signal to him that there had been spectators to his ugly outburst.
He couldnât resist taking her bait. âMaybe it should be. It would be easier that way â for everyone.â
âIs that so?â Kocho sneered, no hint of familiarity or kindness in her features; nothing but that poisonous, deadly smile. âWell, if that was the case, then you wouldâve preferred Uzui to leave Y/L/N for dead among the rubble in Yoshiwara, correct?
âYou would rather us be searching to fill the newest Hashira vacancy, with her corpse barely cold in the ground-â
âDo not say another word, Kocho.â Rengoku warned, quietly.
But for Shinobu, anger was her vice, and so his warning only spurred her on.
âTell me, Rengoku, if the new Pillar had been a woman, would you have held her the way you held Y/N?â
Shinobuâs smile was chilling as she relished the way the Flame Pillar began to tremble. âOr perhaps, would you finally confess to her, having learned your lesson from the missed opportunity with Y/N? Would you live out your days with her, while Y/N rotted below the earth, having never known someone loved her?â
âENOUGH.â Rengoku roared, and for a moment, Shinobu thought the Flame Pillar might put his clenched fist through her wall. The silence that followed was tense and long as Rengoku struggled to calm his breathing.
âWhat do you want from me, Kocho?â Rengoku finally snapped, wheeling around to glower at the Insect Pillar, eyes half-crazed in his frustration.
------------------------------------------------------
(Two months earlier)
Dawn was still far off, but the hall of her estate was a mess.
Shinobu knew that at any moment, another group of Kakushi would be coming through the hole Rengoku had left in her wall bearing the unconscious body of the Sound Pillar, and if they did so, theyâd be stumbling upon the chaotic scene that had unfolded before.
Rengoku was still on the floor, legs on either side of Y/N, who was slumped against his chest and fully exposed from the waist up.
With some satisfaction, Shinobu noted that the dark purple bruising around Y/Nâs chest was clearing, a sure sign that she had chosen the correct antidote for the Flame Hashira to slam into her heart.
But her hypothermia persisted.
Rengoku, on the other hand, was beginning to breathe rather loudly, no doubt as he continued to maintain his high fever for the sake of the unmoving woman braced between his thighs.
âRengoku,â Shinobu crouched down next to the Flame Pillar, her hand coming to a rest on his shoulder, which burned beneath her palm. âRengoku, we need to move.â
The man lifted his head up to meet her eyes, his own glassy and unfocused. Shinobu clamped down on the swear building on her tongue â he had fever fog.
Rengoku grunted at her before his head slumped back down, chin nearly touching his chest.
Shinobu tried again. âRengoku, we are in the open hallway of the Butterfly Mansion. Others will be arriving soon. Y/N is completed exposed.â
That seemed to get his attention. Rengokuâs head lifted, his eyes narrowed slits, but nonetheless open. He grunted in some sort of acknowledgement and began to shift Y/N in his lap.
He turned the unconscious Ice Pillar so that her back rested against one arm that curled around her bare waist. His free arm slid to grip beneath her knees, shifting her into a bridal-style position to carry her.
Two of the Butterfly Mansionâs staff moved to help him stand, but Rengoku shrugged them off, surprising Shinobu as he managed to rise steadily to his feet, Y/N secured against his chest.
He looked at Shinobu expectantly and she began ushering him towards a secluded wing of the Manor, towards her private hall. Across from her personal office was a special infirmary room, walled off from the rest of the recovery ward.
Shinobu withdrew a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked the heavy, wooden door.
âYou two can stay in here until her body temperature returns to normal,â She said, as Rengoku made his way towards the recovery bed.
Shinobu watched as Rengoku, still wearing his zori and uniform pants, ever so gently lowered himself and Y/N down on the bed, repeating his earlier positioning of her between his thighs. He propped up one leg slightly to keep the Ice Pillar from slumping over, her back pressed to his bare chest. Rengoku leaned against the headboard so that Y/Nâs head could rest against his clavicle, though it slumped instead towards her left shoulder.
Shinobu made to grab a blanket to throw over the two topless Hashira but stopped short as Rengoku made to move again.
He seemed to realize that Y/N, while also still in her torn uniform pants and zori, was still bare from the waist up, her body positioned towards the door. He frowned, his hand coming up to graze the side of her arm. He flinched slightly, no doubt at the persistent chill that lingered on her skin, and he moved both of his large hands down over the back of hers as they lay limply on either side of her thighs, intertwining their fingers.
Awestruck, Shinobu watched as Rengoku brought Y/Nâs arms up to cross them over her chest, locking them in place by covering her arms with his own, as though wrapping her in a sweet embrace. Shinobu knew that heâd done so to avoid touching her bare breasts himself, or at least to do so as minimally as possible, while still providing her cover. And, due to the breadth of Rengokuâs muscled forearms, Y/Nâs sensitive area was almost entirely obscured from view.
Rengoku had barely been clinging to consciousness himself, and once she was sufficiently hidden in his arms, his head dropped forward until his forehead came to a rest on Y/Nâs shoulder, opposite of where sheâd rolled her head.
To the unassuming eye, it would have appeared as though the pair of Hashira were simply engaged in an intimate moment, rather than one desperately trying to anchor the other to life.
Shinobu moved to place the blanket over the Pillarsâ laps, before quietly exiting the private room.
âSeal this wing off entirely,â she murmured to Aoi, who had been waiting dutifully outside. âNo one comes down here without my explicit permission.â
Aoi bowed to her before she ushered the other Kakushi out. Faintly, Shinobu heard the arriving shouts of the group bearing the Sound Pillar. She took a single deep breath, steeling herself once more, before moving to check on her incoming patient.
-------------------------------------------------------
Shinobu raised her chin, looking down her nose at him in disgust. âIâm waiting for the man who would have set the world ablaze to save Y/N to reappear.â
She cocked her head, narrowing her eyes at him. âIâm waiting for the man who used his own body as her lifeline, and who tried to smash open the infirmary door when he was delirious with fever because he thought that she had died while he was asleep.â
The Insect Pillarâs masked smile finally slipped from her face and her true rage towards the Flame Pillar shone through. âIt is cruel to make her feel as though sheâs done something wrong,â Shinobuâs arms folded across her chest. âAnd it is cruel to you both for you to pretend as though she does not mean anything to you. Havenât you both been through enough? Are you not exhausted as well?â
A tortured look passed over Rengokuâs face. âIt is better this way, Kocho. I do not want to be the cause of her pain, and I cannot survive going through what happened to her again.
âFor all your talk about either of you dying, Iâve yet to hear you mention the equal alternative,â Shinobu sighed, gathering her papers and books. âThe one where we win and you both live. What do you suppose happens then?â
Rengoku said nothing and so, Shinobu continued. âSuppose we emerge victorious â would you truly prefer for you and Y/N to go your separate ways â to never see one another again, or never acknowledge the bond the two of you share?â
âThere is no guarantee that either of us survives, Kocho,â Rengoku said quietly, his eyes falling to his feet.
Shinobu smiled but it was no longer cruel or bitter; it was wistful. âAnd there is no guarantee that either of you die. Thatâs the fickle nature of humanity, is it not? The very reason we fight?â
The Insect Pillar gathered her papers and stacked them neatly on her shelf. âFor the possibilities of it all.â
--------------------------------------------------------
The sun was high in the sky by the time Shinobu had a moment to check on the two unconscious pillars in the back room.
Uzui had required quite a bit of attention in order to stop the poison from becoming deadly, though the fact that her combination of the wisteria antidote with the amphetamine had been so effective on Y/N meant that Shinobu was able to administer the same to the Sound Pillar in half the time.
She was exhausted; the strain of the nightâs events weighed heavily on her, but she had to check on Y/Nâs temperature â if the Ice Pillar still had not recovered, she feared that hope was lost.
She pushed the door to the private infirmary room open and saw the two Hashira, still in the same position sheâd left them in. Rengoku was deeply asleep, no doubt from the exhaustion wrought by his high fever.
Enclosed within his arms, Y/N remained unconscious but pink.
Shinobu felt the relief course through her, but she did not allow herself to relax until she reached out a hand to lightly pinch the Ice Pillarâs cheek.
It bloomed red beneath her fingers, and it was warm to the touch.
Heâd done it. The Flame Pillar had staved off her hypothermia. Their only obstacle now lay in getting her to reawaken.
Shinobu laid her hand across Rengokuâs forehead, frowning at the scorching heat of his brow; his fever had worsened more than sheâd anticipated, and he would need intervention soon. She turned to nod at the Kakushi who waited by the door to the recovery room, and the three of them moved to separate the Flame and Ice Pillars.
âPut him in one of the other single-recovery rooms. Tell Aoi to administer the fever medication I keep in my cabinet â it should dispel his fever within a few hours.â Shinobu ordered, as the Kakushi, with great effort, lifted the Flame Pillar from his position behind Y/N. Shinobu gently eased her friend down against the bed and pulled a blanket over her exposed torso. âI will also need a fresh hospital gown for Lady Y/L/N.â
The Kakushi nodded their assent and got to work, heaving the unconscious Flame Pillar towards the door when he awoke. At first, his eyes were dazed, and confused as they darted around him, but as he took in his surroundings, he began to struggle against the grip of the Kakushi.
âPlease, Lord Rengoku, your fever is dangerously high! Allow us to help!â One of them cried, though his efforts to tug the Pillar away were futile. Shinobu supposed the only reason he had not yet succeeded in completely throwing them off was the fact that his fever had severely weakened him.
âRengoku,â Shinobu said sternly, coming around from her position by Y/N to meet his eyes, though he only thrashed harder against the Kakushi as he began to mutter incoherently under his breath. âRengoku, thatâs enough. Youâre safe. Youâre in the Butterfly Mansion, and you have a high fever. Please, let the Kakushi do their job.â
But the Insect Pillarâs words fell on deaf ears as Rengoku began to hyperventilate, his muscles straining as he tried desperately to break free from the Kakushiâs hold. Shinobu was at a loss; her comrade did not merely look frantic â he looked terrified, desperate, and utterly beyond reproach or reason. His heart rate had spiked considerably, and his breath was jerky and uneven, as though he could not fully understand where he was or that he was amongst friends.
As she strained to make out what the Flame Pillar repeated, over and over, under his breath, Shinobu realized that his eyes were not unfocused at all; they were locked on the unconscious Ice Pillar in the bed behind her.
âI can still save her!â he roared.
It all made sense then.
Shinobu realized that he thought they were moving him not because heâd successfully thwarted her hypothermia, but because he had failed â and that she was now dead.
âRengoku,â Shinobu said sharply, trying to force the irate and delirious Flame Pillar to meet her eyes. âRengoku, Y/N is alive. Her body temperature has returned to normal. She is safe.â
But the Flame Pillar seemed not to hear her, as he only struggled harder against the Kakushi desperately trying to usher him out of Y/Nâs room.
Rengoku was becoming more violent, even as the Kakushi finally managed to shove him through the doorway of Y/Nâs room. Just before theyâd managed to slam the door shut, Shinobu caught Aoiâs eye and nodded, the younger girl quickly disappeared into the Pillarâs office.
Shinobu watched in stunned silence as the Flame Pillar broke free from the Kakushi and began hurtling his body against the door, Y/Nâs name falling from his lips in an anguished chant.
Rengoku was so delirious in his fevered panic that he did not notice Aoi slip behind him and plunge a syringe into his neck, depositing a thick stream of the clear liquid that Shinobu knew would have a near-instantaneous effect on his consciousness.
The Insect Pillar felt a strange sense of pity and remorse as she watched her friend slump to the floor outside of the infirmary room, a final cry out for the Ice Pillar falling from his lips before the sedative lulled him back to sleep.
-------------------------------------------------------
(Kyojuroâs POV â three days later)
He didnât know why heâd returned to the Butterfly Mansion.
Kyojuro tried to convince himself that it was because he didnât want to wait for his crow to return with Kochoâs salve, but he knew it was a pathetic excuse. Heâd sworn to himself that he would leave Y/L/N alone after their last argument. Heâd vowed that the door between them had been closed for good, and they would only ever be colleagues. Nothing more.
But he couldnât stay away. Perhaps it was because heâd spent the last few days stewing over their last argument, and somewhere, amidst his endless supply of self-hatred, heâd also grown angry with the Ice Pillar.
Angry, because she had put herself in harmâs way when heâd specifically told her not to.
Angry because sheâd nearly died, and sheâd threatened to take the last vestiges of his sanity with her to the afterlife.
Angry that she insisted on remaining in the Demon Slayer Corps despite having given more than enough of herself to their cause; angry that she didnât understand why he couldnât yet do the same.
Angry because she didnât seem to understand his feelings at all.
Perhaps in another life, they could have had each other. Had they both been born into a world without demons, then maybe they would have still found each other and maybe, just maybe, he would have been able to love her the way she deserved.
But for Kyojuro, their relationship would always be defined by a series of maybes, and nothing more.
--------------------------------------------------------
It would have been a lie for Kyojuro to say heâd not been struck dumb by her.
She was stretched out on the steps of Kochoâs engawa, legs dangling off the edge of the porch as she leaned back on her elbows, eyes closed dreamily as she kept her face tilted up towards the cooling night air.
Long, lean, bare legs, he realized, an uncomfortable heat creeping up his collar. He couldnât help running his eyes up their length, fixating hard on the supple curves of her thighs.
Why were her legs bare?
She lookedâŚso unguarded this way. Her haori was draped around her shoulders, one of its sleeves hanging loosely to the side and exposing her bare shoulder â how exposed was she, the idiot â and her hair was completely unbound, falling in a silken river to her waist.
It was a stark contrast to the braided crown she wore at the base of her neck. It hit him that, not counting the night sheâd nearly died, he had not otherwise seen her with her hair down.
He liked it. A lot.
âI finally rid myself of one migraine only for another to appear,â Y/Nâs lofty voice snapped him out of his reverence, as the Ice Pillar opened her eyes to glare at him.Â
âIf youâve come for Shinobu, she is not here. Sheâs on an errand and will not be back until early morning.â Y/N turned her attention away from him and back towards the garden, her voice stony.
At that moment, there were a million things Kyojuro could have said to the Ice Pillar. Â
How are you?
I missed the way you glare at me.
Iâm sorry. Iâm so sorry.
Any of those options would have been far better than what came tumbling out of his mouth.
âI hadnât realized you were indecent. My apologies.â
Y/Nâs head snapped back to him, her eyes chips of ice. âIndecent?â She rose from her seat on the engawa and faced him fully, and Rengoku nearly groaned.
Indecent, indeed.
Y/N was showing more skin than Kanroji did on a regular day. As she stood, Rengoku saw that she was hardly wearing any clothing at all, save for the haori draped loosely around her frame.
The Ice Pillar wore no top but the bindings around her chest, leaving a sizeable swath of her midriff exposed to the summer air. Whatever she wore as bottoms could hardly be labeled as âpants,â given that their hem ended just short of the middle of her thigh, leaving the vast majority of her legs exposed to anyone who would happen to walk by. Â
The Flame Pillar felt as though he were overheating, and he tugged uselessly at the collar of his uniform shirt. As he looked over the scowling Ice Pillar, Rengoku found himself unable to remember why he had come to the Mansion at all. Â
------------------------------------------------------
(Y/Nâs POV)
(Earlier that day)
âTa-da!â Mitsuri sang as she pulled the small bundle from behind her, a grin wide on her face. âA gift from Shinobu and myself!â
Y/N peered down quizzically at the small, folded bunch of cloth in the Love Pillarâs hands. âWhat is it?â
âA new take on the Corpsâ uniform,â Shinobu replied crisply, sitting down on the tatami floor of her office. âI designed it myself, and Mitsuri sewed it.â
âBut what is it?â Y/N pressed.
Mitsuri joined Shinobu on the floor. âYour new training pants. Altered, so that you have more flexibility and less irritation against your wound.â
Y/N held up the tiny scrap of fabric between her index finger and thumb. âAre you telling me these are pants?â
Mitsuri and Shinobu nodded, smiling.
Y/N looked incredulously at the two women. âBut where are the pants?â
Mitsuri laughed. âThink of it as a cross between the uniform skirt and pants, but more modified.â
Shinobu nodded. âI used the same material that our uniform is made out of but designed it in a way to be more flexible â it will mold to your body rather than require you to use a belt to keep it up.â Y/N unfurled the cloth and gaped down at it. âThey likely arenât suitable for public, but around here and during your training, they should be perfectly adequate.â
âPerfectly adequate?â Y/N repeated, turning the garment over in her hands. âShinobu, these are underclothes! Not pants!â The Ice Pillar could not stop herself from giggling. âMy legs will be entirely exposed!â
âTry them on!â Mitsuri urged. âShinobu and I estimated they would hit around mid-thigh, so youâll still have some coverage.â Mitsuri looked down at her own skirt in consideration. âSlightly more so than I do.â
Y/N groaned but removed her uniform pants and slid into her friendsâ gift. She was surprised at how comfortable they felt; they had a similar feel to the chest bindings most of the women in the Corps wore, in terms of fit. The black bottoms had no true waistband, but fit snuggly at the dip of her waist, before hugging her hips and thighs until the hem cut right above the middle of her thigh.
âHow do they feel?â Shinobu asked as Y/N inspected the new garment.
Y/N turned from side to side, testing their flexibility. âGood. They donât seem to rub against the scar at all.â Y/N smiled devilishly at her friends. âEven if they do leave little to the imagination.â
MItsuri giggled. âI hadnât noticed Y/N, but you have â oh, what did Uzui call it?â She scrunched her eyebrows in thought. âOh! An âeasy and deliverable type of butt!ââ The three girls laughed, carefree as Y/N wiggled her hips suggestively in front of her friends, her heart warm at the care and consideration they had put into their gift.
------------------------------------------------------
Y/N mused that Mitsuriâs assessment of how she looked in the undershorts had been correct as Rengokuâs eyes raked over her as she stood tall before him, an unmistakable glint of hunger glowing in his amber pools.
Until they snagged on the thick, curved gash that extended from the band of her bottoms to just over her belly button.
In an instant, simmering fire of the Flame Pillarâs gaze had been snuffed out, something harder and colder taking over as he glared at where Upper Moon Six had buried his poisoned sickle within her.
Under any other circumstance, Y/N might have felt self-conscious at the mixture of frigid contempt that pulled on Rengokuâs face as he ran his eyes over her scar, but at that moment, it only made her blood boil.
âYou should return to your room. You shouldnât be out here exposed like this.â Rengoku said after a moment, his eyes moving away from her to stare over her shoulder, resolutely avoiding her gaze.
Y/N wondered briefly if it were possible to make someone combust with the fire of their stare. She was so tired and so angry at the way in which he demanded she stay at armâs length yet felt utterly entitled to boss her around.
She decided then that she would not comply. Instead, Y/N took one step and then another, and again until she pushed past him, marching intently up the path she knew led away from the Butterfly Estate and to a secluded, grassy, hilled clifftop.
âStop â Y/L/Nâ Rengoku growled, lunging after her, but Y/N, despite her injured state, was still faster than he, and she twisted out of his grasp before he could grab her and haul her back to the Mansion.
She probably looked insane, and maybe she was -- barely dressed, hair unbound, and striding towards that grassy hill up the winding path from Shinobuâs estate like she had any idea what she was doing.
The Flame Pillar followed.
âââââââââââââââââââââ--------
Apart from her close friendship with the Insect Pillar, there was another reason Y/N spent so much time in and around the Butterfly Mansion â its view.
Though she supposed this secret area sheâd discovered couldnât really be counted as part of Shinobuâs Estate â it was, after all, up a rather steep and twisting climb from the western-most point of her friendâs manor, and one could scarcely see the lights of the house once they ascended the small cliff.
Her thighs ached after nearly two months of disuse as she stormed up the steep incline, narrowly avoiding the sharp, twisting branches of the ancient trees that had concaved over the beaten path, forming a tunnel of gnarled wood that forced her to duck her head to navigate.
Y/Nâs chest tightened as she neared the end of the path, the steady beat of the Flame Pillarâs footsteps trailing closely behind her.
When she finally emerged from the thicket of branches, she felt as though she could breathe again.
The path had given way to a cliff-top clearing. Soft, emerald grass covered the earthen floor, peppered with various wildflowers in vibrant hues of periwinkle, white, and pink. Towards the center was a thick, ancient oak tree, with a trunk as wide as a small hut, Its leaves ruffled lazily in the slight summer breeze. Fat hotaru floated idly above the grass while the crickets hummed.
The clearing extended to a point before dropping into a rocky cliff. Had it been a night of a new moon, Y/N would never risk coming out here for fear of stumbling too close to the cliffâs edge. But that night, the moon was full and its silver light was so bright that Y/N could see all the way to the opposite of the clearing, down to the summer irises swaying in the warm night air.
It was a pity that instead of feeling the warm serenity she normally had when she came out to her little hideaway, she felt nothing but boiling anger and a growing headache.
âYou need to go back inside,â Rengoku said from behind her. Y/N ground her teeth, turning sharply on her heel to face him.
âWhy do you care â I thought you only did that when Iâm unconscious.â She bit back, and it felt good to see him be the one who flinched for once. âOr maybe itâs when you think Iâm dying?â
She laughed, derisively. âYouâll have to forgive me, Iâve long since forgotten the rules of your game. You change them so often, you see.â
âGo back to the Butterfly Mansion, Y/L/N. You shouldnât be out here. Not in your current state.â He said, voice as hard and unforgiving as stone.
âIâve told you already that you are not in a position to order me around!â Y/N snapped, her words and her eyes chips of ice as she glared at him.
He was so infuriating â he had told her, in so many ways, that she meant nothing to him, and yet here he was, glowering at her as though her very existence incensed him.
âYouâve been nothing but unkind to me since I awoke, and youâve given me no explanation!â She took a step towards him.
âStop,â the Flame Pillar bit out, barely concealing the way he trembled with rage. âDo not take another step. Turn around and go back inside.â
If Y/N had looked pissed before, she looked downright furious now.
âWhy did you come to see me while I was unconscious?â Y/N demanded, shaking. âYou came every day, yet the second I wake up, you stop?â
His refusal to answer her, to even look at her, only made her seethe.
âYouâre a coward, Rengoku.â
Rengokuâs teeth gnashed together, his fists balling tightly by his sides as he drew upon every ounce last shred of sanity, of restraint, left within him.
âGo. In. Side.â He ground out dangerously, his voice dropping into a growl on the last syllable.
But the Ice Pillar took another step towards him, her eyes blazing with a fire that could outburn his own.
âNo.â
Rengokuâs jaw flexed. âY/L/N-â
âI said no, Rengoku.â She was now within armâs reach of the rigid Flame Pillar.
His eyes met hers, cold and hard, but she did not balk. She went in for the kill. âYou have no say over my choices when my life is meaningless to you.â
Y/N watched the blow land, and land hard.
âMeaningless?â Rengoku looked at her and there was a new fire in his gaze, a hot, angry fire that threatened to burn the grassy overlook around them to cinders. âYou believe I think your life is meaningless?â
This time, it was Rengoku who advanced towards her, bringing her within an armâs length, and forcing her to tilt her head up to hold his raging stare.
âDo you have any idea â any at all â what it was like to see you, half dead in Uzuiâs arms?â Rengokuâs voice dark, and harsh as he narrowed his eyes at her. âOr what it was like to have to carry you to Kocho, not knowing whether your heart would give out before I could get you there?â
Y/N refused to cower beneath the intensity of his gaze, her chin lifting defiantly. âDo I know what it was like?â She hissed; hackles raised.
âThank you Rengoku, truly â thank you.â Y/N laughed, but it was devoid of any humor. âI am so glad that youâve finally given me something to work with â so those are your rules, are they?â She was toe to toe with the Flame Hashira, glowering down at her.
âWell since weâre keeping score, Rengoku, do you know what it was like to see you broken and bleeding out on Kochoâs table after the incident on the train?â
âThatâs not the same thing,â Rengoku shot back bitterly.
âHow the fuck is it not-?â
âBecause it wasnât your mission to take!â Rengoku finally broke, his voice rising to a shout. He could not stop himself as his hands shot out and gripped Y/Nâs shoulders, shaking her lightly in his torment.
âYou have no idea how it felt to know that you had died â no matter how briefly â because you went on a mission in my place!â
âTo know that â that you could still die because I had been too weak on that fucking train. Your death would have been my fault, Y/N!â
----------------------------------------------------
(Kyojuroâs POV)
And there it was: the truth that he had tried so hard to suppress, laid flat out in the open.
Everything that had happened to Y/N, the whole entire mess â had been entirely his fault.
His fault because he had been too weak to finish off Upper Moon Three, too weak to do anything but let the demonâs punch a hole through his chest like it was nothing.
Y/L/N and Uzui had saved themselves in the end; theyâd completed their mission, defeating not just one, but two upper ranks. They hadnât succumbed to their injuries until after theyâd fulfilled their duties.
But him? Heâd only been saved by the grace of the sun and the tireless efforts of the Kakushi.
Heâd nearly lost his life and he had nothing to show for it. Rather than do anything to further the Corpâs ultimate goals, heâd only set them back, and nearly cost them something priceless in return â their Ice Pillar.
The woman he loved.
He had no right to love her, of course â not when his reprehensible weakness had forced her to be offered up to two upper moon demons on a silver platter.
Sheâd been there, the morning he awoke from his three-week-long coma. Sheâd been right by his bedside, a sob choking from her throat as sheâd called for Kocho to come quick!
At first, heâd been confused, because he hadnât understood why she was crying. Heâd tried to reach for her, to wipe the tears spilling down her cheeks when the pain had slammed into him, causing him to seize, arm suspended in mid-air.
Never before had he not been in control of his body; it had sent him into a panic.
âNo, Kyojuro, please donât move!â Y/N had cried, calling him, for the first time, by his given name. a warm hand wrapping around the one heâd stretched out towards her, lowering it gently down to the bed. âYour injuries are too grave!â
He didnât remember much after that, only what Kocho had filled him in on later â namely, that heâd begun to panic, his breathing flaring out of control as heâd tried to fight off Y/L/N, a Kakushi, and the Insect Pillar.
His recovery had been long and slow. His wounds from the Upper Three demon had resulted in significant muscle damage that had required weeks of intensive care and training in order to build it back up again.
Those long days spent at the Butterfly Mansion had given him time to stew; to rage against himself. Heâd been frustrated, so unbelievably frustrated over his inability to swing his own sword for more than five minutes that he almost considered giving in and retiring.
And then Uzui arrived, and heâd mentioned an upcoming mission to the Entertainment District, that they had discussed prior to Kyojuro leaving for the damned train, and the Sound Pillar revealed that his intel suggested the possible presence of an Upper Rank.
Kyojuro had promised to accompany him, and then heâd woken up in Kochoâs hospital, and that mission had been taken off the table and given to her.
The panic he had felt had been indescribable; he had narrowly survived an encounter with an Upper Rank, but then he was forced to watch the woman he loved walk straight into the wolf's den, and he had been incapable of convincing her to stay behind.
While she had been gone, he had railed against and prayed to and cursed at the gods, begging them to bring her home, to let her come back to him alive and whole.
Instead, theyâd sent her back as a near-corpse and had laughed at his pitiful attempts to save her.
And then, she had straddled that narrow divide between life and death for nearly two months, and he had been as helpless as a cat chasing a string â his desire forever in sight yet somehow always just beyond his reach.
After his brush with death, heâd made a commitment to himself not to think of his battle with the Upper Three demon, to not waste his skill and energy on the past, but rather focus his fury on ensuring that when they did meet again, he would emerge victorious. Heâd certainly not given any thought to the demonâs slime-tongued words.
Heâd been disgusted when the demon had propositioned turning him into its like â and outright offended that those creatures could ever compare to the beautiful transience of humanity.
But then heâd cradled Y/N, broken and dying in his arms, and for the first time, Kyojuro had understood the appeal of the Upper Threeâs offer.
Because he would rather have lived in a world in which Y/N had been turned into his enemy than in one in which she did not exist at all.
The very thought had shaken him to his core; because it meant he was not fully dedicated to their cause. He had no right to call himself a Hashira; nor did he have any right to claim to love Y/L/N. Not when heâd so easily damn her out of his own selfishness. So he had run.
A coward, after all.
--------------------------------------------------------
(Y/Nâs POV)
Y/N was panting, her fury rippling off her in near-tangible waves.
âSo, this whole thing,â she seethed, her voice shaking. âYour whole fucking attitude â has been because youâve had your head so far up your ass, that you thought my injuries were your fault?â
It was unbelievable. It was ridiculous. And yet it was so Rengoku that it made her ears ring, made her see red as she tried to keep herself from imploding.
Rengoku said nothing, but she could see the way his eyes shuttered closed, his walls flying back up as he remained intent on keeping her out. He turned and began walking back towards the path back to the Estates.
âI was right â you ARE a coward!â She shrieked after him.
He froze. She stood there, heaving, daring him to turn around, to face her.
âDo not call me a coward again,â he said quietly, his back still to her, but his shoulders tensed, his fists balling once more at his sides.
Y/N smiled ruefully. âThen exactly what would you call what youâre doing now?.â Her lip curled into a sneer. âRun away, Rengoku. Itâs what you do best.â
A flash of orange and white clouded her vision as Rengoku turned on his heel and closed the distance between them before she could draw another breath.
Y/N did not have time to react before his hands gripped either side of her jaw as he slammed his mouth down against hers, furious and heated.
It was not gentle; it was an angry clash of lips and teeth, but it also stoked a fire so hot in Y/Nâs belly that she did not care, and she fully gave herself over to the bruising press of his lips against hers. She gladly opened up to him so that his tongue could slide into her mouth as one of his hands snaked behind her head to press her harder to him, demanding that she let him take and take until he was sated.
As quickly as it had begun, it was over. They broke apart with a gasp, leaping back from one another as though burned. Their chests heaved as they stared at one another.
There was a line drawn in the sand between them. If either of them crossed it, there would be no going back.
He was a coward, but she wasnât. And sheâd grown tired of this tedious dance of theirs.
Yet it surprised her all the same that he reached for her at the same time she moved for him, the two of them colliding like magnets as their mouths clashed together once more.
Rengoku kissed her like he was drowning, and she was his lifeline.
Y/N threw her arms around his neck and tugged him down closer to her, determined to take from him as much as he wanted to take from her.
The pair of them stumbled back against the ancient oak tree that sat back from the grassy cliff, Y/N caged against its bark by the Flame Pillar.
His hands gripped fistfuls of her haori as though he couldnât decide whether to pull her closer or tug her away. His lips devoured each breathy moan he pulled from her as one hand tangled in her hair and pulled, allowing him to deepen the kiss.
She ran her hands through the fiery strands of his hair, gripping and tugging it as he explored her mouth was his demanding tongue. Y/N, emboldened by the way his fingers dug into her haori, let her hands roam from his hair and to his neck, and then to the rocky planes of his broad chest before settling on his hips as she tugged him flush against her.Â
His control was slipping, and fast. âY/L/N, I canât- I wonât be able to hold back.â Rengoku moaned into her mouth, his hands scrunching the fabric of her haori, his fingers desperately seeking to hold her closer to him. âTell me to stop, Y/L/N.â
Y/Nâs hands only buried deeper into his hair, tugging him harder against her as she slid her tongue into his waiting mouth.
âDonât stop,â she whispered against his mouth between breaks for oxygen. âNever stop, Rengoku.â
Y/N pulled back from him, just enough to unlatch his hands from where they were buried in the back of her haori, and moved them inside its folds, right on her bare waist.
The burning weight of his hands felt exquisite.
Rengoku shuddered as he felt the smooth, soft dips of Y/Nâs waist, his fingers digging into her flesh as he sought to touch more of her, his hands running across every inch that was not covered by her bindings or those glorious undershorts.
Lips still moving furiously against hers, Rengoku bent slightly to run his hands down the silken expanse of her thighs, gripping under her knees before hoisting her up to carry her away from the tree and lay her down in the velvety grass below.
Y/N felt as though she were on fire. The ache between her legs was almost maddening, and she was desperate to have the Flame Pillar sheathe himself inside her, to make her forget even her own name.
If she could not have his love, she could at least have this.
Her hands dragged down Rengokuâs front, coming to a rest at his belt before she began fumbling with the clasp. Y/N had just managed to undo it when Rengokuâs hands â large, warm, and much stronger than her own, wrapped around her wrists, stilling her.
âNot yet, you impatient woman,â he smirked against her mouth. He moved one wrist to join the other in his left hand before bringing her arms up over her head, pinning her to the ground.
Y/N whimpered and rolled her hips against his, impatient and demanding, wanting desperately to feel some relief as her core clenched wildly around nothing.
Rengoku chuckled darkly, the rich timbre of his voice causing her blood to nearly boil with her want, as he made his way down her body with his lips.
He first came to her chest bindings, growling in impatience as he nipped at one breast over the tightly wound fabric.
His fingers brushed against her sternum as he ripped her bindings straight down the middle, Y/N shuddering as the warm summer nightâs air caressed her sensitive skin, her nipples pebbling at the change in temperature.
She waited for him to lavish her soft mounds, but the Flame Pillar paused, eyes narrowed on the valley between her breasts, right on the pale, lilac mark where heâd plunged Shinobuâs antidote into her heart.
Y/N felt a lump form in her throat. Heâd reacted poorly to the ribboned scar on her lower belly already, and now her once chance to finally have Rengoku in the way sheâd so desperately longed to have him was about to be ruined.
But instead of pulling away from her in disgust, he leaned forward and pressed his lips softly against it the healed wound.
âI hadnât realized I wounded you,â he murmured softly, reverently as he kissed it again. Y/N watched in bewilderment as he pressed his ear against her chest, letting his head rest there for a moment.
Listening to her heart hammer against her sternum.
âThe sweetest music,â he whispered, pulling away to look at her not with lust but with unbounded tenderness.
Donât look at me like that, she silently begged, donât give me hope.
But as quickly as the moment had come, it passed and the esurient flame in Rengokuâs eyes flickered back to life. His lips continued down her abdomen, hot and needy until he reached the source of her near-fatal injury.
His mouth paused at the scar left by Upper Moon Six, the one heâd so callously glared at not even an hour before. This time, he ran his tongue along it, from the top to its base near her hipbone, pressing a fierce kiss against its end before continuing his descent.
âI will either have to thank my old Tsugoku the next time I see her,â Rengoku whispered darkly as he pulled at the soft waistband of Y/Nâs undershorts with his teeth. âOr I shall have to burn her sewing room to cinders.â Rengokuâs fingers slid beneath the short hem of her bottoms, pulling them down inch by inch to expose her sensitive flesh.
Rengoku groaned when he saw Y/N was not wearing anything else beneath her scandalous bottoms. âDefinitely burning.â His hands, so large and warm ran up the outer curve of her thighs, marveling at the silky smoothness of her skin. âBecause you are far too tempting when wearing them.â
The Flame Pillar looked wild as he leaned forward, pressing his lips against the lower indent between Y/Nâs hipbones as he kissed his way down to where she ached the most.
He ducked around the center of her desire in favor of sucking softly on her inner thigh. Y/Nâs chest heaved as her hands flailed next to her, desperately seeking purchase, until the Flame Hashira caught them in his hands, his thumbs rubbing soothing circles on her palms as their fingers interlaced.
âRengoku - just fuck me already,â Y/N groaned as the Flame Pillarâs face settled between her thighs, his hot breath against her bare cunt causing her legs to attempt to clench shut.
âWell now, that wonât do,â Rengoku tutted, his hands withdrawing from hers as he wound his arms underneath both of her thighs, spreading them as wide as he could to expose her core to his heady gaze.
Rengoku leaned forward and lightly traced up her damp slit with the tip of his tongue. His amber irises which had been locked on hers, rolled back into his head as he groaned at her taste.
âIâm going to take my time with you. Iâve been dreaming of this for a long time, Y/N.â He warned, hands tightening around her thighs as he pressed a light kiss against her slit, teasing her.
In the back of her mind, Y/N registered that heâd used her first name. But the graze of his lips against her most sensitive flesh had her crying out his name, high-pitched and breathy, and she watched helplessly as the sound made Rengokuâs eyes turn black.
In an instant, he was upon her, and he was ravenous.
His mouth latched to her center as though she was an oasis in the middle of a blazing desert, and he was a man dying of thirst.
The way Rengokuâs teeth grazed her sensitive nub made her abdomen clench, and she fought against his ironclad grip on her thighs as they spasmed, desperate to clench around his head.
Y/N moaned, head thrown back into the soft summer grass as she felt herself grow wetter and wetter beneath the Flame Pillar, her hands desperately tugging and pinching at her breasts in an effort to feel more pleasure.
Y/N felt as though she was hurtling towards a cliff that she could not stop herself from tumbling over as Rengoku increased the intensity of his ministrations against her needy cunt.
âYou taste,â he ground out through harsh drags of his tongue up her drenched folds, âlike fucking paradise.â
His mouth latched around her clit, giving it a sharp suck that had Y/N seeing stars. She barely had time to recover, to acknowledge that she was at her tipping point when Rengoku thrust his tongue into her core and began to fuck her.
Y/N came apart the moment she felt his tongue enter her, a rush of her juices spilling over his relentless maw, but he held her hips down and continued his feast. His teeth grazed her clit over and over while his tongue pumped steadily in and out of her, and Y/N was close to sobbing at the overstimulation.
The Flame Pillar kept his eyes locked on hers the entire time, the amber orbs glowing almost ominously in the indigo night.
âI- fuck.â Y/N breathed, grinding unrestrainedly against the blondeâs greedy mouth. âRengoku!â
The Ice Pillar tried to sit up, tried to grab her comradeâs hair to tell him that she couldnât take it anymore, that she needed him, but Rengoku was faster. Unfurling a steely arm from where it had been locked around her thigh to hold her open to him, he reached up her torso, his large hand splaying across her upper abdomen to restrain her.
âSit down,â he growled between thrusts of his tongue into her aching cunt, nipping harshly at her inner thigh. âI am not finished.â
Y/N whimpered beneath the weight of his hand holding her down against the earth and the nearly painful ecstasy that Rengoku bestowed upon her between her legs.
Whether it was in praise for her obedience or a further act of torture, Rengoku then pressed his face flush against her core and rocked it harshly from side to side, his nose and the burgeoning stubble along his jaw scraping against her overstimulated and sensitive flesh.
Y/N slapped her hand against her mouth to stifle the howl that tore from her throat. Rengoku repeated the movement; it felt wonderful. It felt obscene. It made Y/Nâs thighs contract around his head as her stomach dipped inward and a gush of her juices spilled out of her, more powerful than before, dampening the collar of the Flame Pillarâs haori.
For a breath, Y/N thought she would die of embarrassment until she felt Rengokuâs mouth vibrate against her from his groan of satisfaction. His tongue thrust once, twice more into her aching core before he withdrew completely, satisfaction tugging at the corners of his smirking lips.
But Rengoku looked nowhere near sated as he gazed down hungrily at her, wantonly spread out against the grass, the shredded pieces of her training attire strewn about, save for her haori.
âI will give you one last chance to end this now,â Rengoku whispered, kneeling above her but no longer touching her. âTell me to stop, and I will. I will walk away, and no one will know.â
Though her body already ached from the intensity of Rengokuâs mouth upon her, she could not fathom stopping here, not when sheâd barely begun to taste him herself. The thought of rolling aside to pull on the tattered remains of her clothing, to return to her estate and awake tomorrow as though he had not melted every icy reservation sheâd held with his touch, was enough to make her want to cry.
Though her limbs felt boneless, she summoned all her strength to reach toward the Flame Hashira, to beckon him to return to her.
âI want you, Rengoku,â Y/N said, her voice a breathy whisper as tears clung to her eyelashes. âPlease.â
Rengokuâs pupils exploded, his eyes darkening as he covered her nude body with his own. Y/N nearly sobbed in relief as his lips roughly caught hers, one hand coming up to cradle her face while the other snaked beneath her head, tilting it to the side so he could deepen his claim over her mouth.
Y/Nâs hands rose, shakily, to pull at the buttons of his uniform top, desperate to feel his skin burn against hers.
âOn one condition,â Rengoku said, moving his lips from hers to press against her ear, Y/N shivering. âYou must call me by my name,â
âRengoku?â Y/N questioned her mind too fogged by her own desire.
He nipped lightly under her jaw before pulling his face back from hers, smirking slightly at the way she whined when avoided her attempt to kiss him again.
âMy true name.â
With clarity, Y/N realized what he desired. But he had teased her far too much already, and she yearned to return the favor.
So she looked up at him through her eyelashes, teeth sinking into her lower lip in such a way that made the Flame Hashiraâs eyes darken.
âPlease, please, Kyojuro,â she whispered, lancing a hand up his bicep. âTake me.â
The growl that clawed its way out of the heaving chest of the Flame Pillar made Y//Nâs thighs clamp together. Rengoku â Kyojuro â pounced on her, and Y/N summoned all her residual strength to rip his uniform shirt open.
Kyojuro moaned into her neck as his shirt gave way and Y/Nâs hands came to rest against his bare skin, her nails raking down his taut pectorals to the rigid planes of his chiseled abdomen.
Her lips began descending the path carved by her nails when she drew short at the dark, thick starburst-shaped scar that covered his shoulder and left pectoral. Kyojuroâs breath seized as she pressed her lips ever so softly against it, turning so she could look up at him from beneath her lashes.
Kyojuro was panting as she nuzzled against his scar, kissing it once more before gently gliding her hand over his heart and resting it there, letting herself savor the strong, sturdy beat from within his chest.
Just as he did before, she resumed her trail down his body, her lips coming to the edge of his pants when his hands wound themselves in her hair, every nerve in his body alight as she licked her way up the small happy trail that stopped just below his belly button.
As much as he wanted to feel her mouth around him, Kyojuro had been driven to the brink of insanity by Y/Nâs touch, and his resolve was quickly dwindling.
âY/N â my flame â I canât wait,â Kyojuro said by way of apology, as he covered her hands with his own to still them on his belt. He slipped his hands down to grip her wrists, bringing them together in one hand and moving her arms up over her head, pinning them against the grasp. With his free hand, Kyojuro loosened his belt and his pants, and shimmied them down, kicking them off behind him. Y/Nâs eyes widened at the sight of his proud length as it bounced against his belly button.
Y/Nâs breath caught in her throat. She was no stranger to the male body, but this â sheâd never had anyone compare to Kyojuroâs size or girth.
Kyojuro noticed her hesitation. âIs this â have you ever --?â Kyojuro breathed, hovering above her. It did not matter to him whether she had or had not, but he wanted to ensure that he did not hurt her.
Y/N shook her head. âNo, itâs not my first time â but you are the first one to be soâŚwell endowed.â Y/N flushed as Kyojuro laughed softly above her, and she felt his lips graze hers.
He pulled back slightly, reaching to grip the base of his aching cock tapping it against her soaked cunt in a warning and in permission.
Y/N seized beneath him at the spark of hot pleasure that was sent crackling up her spine as he rubbed his velvety head against the most sensitive part of her core. âKyojuro,â she hissed through clenched teeth, rolling her hips impatiently towards him.
The mushroomed tip of his cock pushed into her entrance and Y/N felt herself go cross-eyed. It was heaven; pure, unadulterated, blissful heaven.
He was insistent on easing his thick length into her, but the throbbing between Y/Nâs legs had grown nearly unbearable. He still wasnât close enough, not nearly as much as she needed him to be.
Boldly, Y/N locked her ankles against Kyojuroâs backside, and with all her might, hauled him into her in a single stroke.
âFuck!â he yelled, unable to restrain his volume as Y/N forced him to become fully seated within her. Her core was impossibly tight and so fucking warm and wet that it had been a true exercise of self-restraint not to spill himself inside her right then.
Y/N nearly screamed in pleasured relief at the way her body burned and stretched around Kyojuroâs considerable length, his base pressed flush against her sensitive clit as she began to grind furiously against him, desperate to relieve the friction that made her ache.
Kyojuro was still panting from the way Y/N had slammed him into her, nearly trembling with restraint as he willed himself not to finish before theyâd truly begun.
Once certain that he would not climax like some green boy, he laughed quietly under his breath. The dark sound caused Y/Nâs eyes to fly open, and her stomach flipped at the wicked glint in his eyes as he stared at her like a hunter stalking its prey.
Kyojuro leaned forward and took one of her breasts, harshly into his mouth, grazing his teeth over her nipple hard enough to make Y/N cry out in slight pain before he lapped at it soothingly with his tongue.
âYou want me to fuck you, is that it?â He murmured between his ministrations, leaving fresh marks all over aching mounds.
Y/N could hardly make a sound as Kyojuro withdrew almost completely from her heat before slamming into her once, the Ice Pillar nearly choking on the breath that flew from her chest with his force.
Desperately â pathetically â Y/N nodded, whimpering.
âIf thatâs how you want it,â Kyojuro growled against her breast, giving her nipple one harsh nip with his teeth before pulling himself off her.
He sat on his knees, back straight as he began to pound relentlessly into her, his hands gripping her backside and holding her flush against his strong thighs. Y/Nâs head remained thrown back against the earth, her fingers tearing at the soft grass beneath her.
Rengokuâs movements were just like those he wielded in battle â powerful; all-consuming; relentless; and unforgiving.
Y/N had never considered herself to be a particularly vocal person when engaged in carnal activities, but the way that Rengokuâs cock hammered into her spasming core over and over had reduced her to a moaning and whimpering mess. The only intelligible thing that fell from her lips was his name â Kyojuro.
âYou look so fucking beautiful like this,â Kyojuro grunted out between forceful snaps of his hips against hers, the night air alive with the lewd squelching of Y/Nâs dripping cunt as he pistoned into her.
Y/N looked to see the Flame Pillarâs eyes locked on her breasts as they bounced with the force of his thrusts. Between the moans and whimpers he pulled from her with every punishing thrust of his hips against hers, she lightly dragged her fingers from their place in the grass to her hipbone, and then up to trace teasingly around her peaked breast.
Kyojuroâs eyes followed every move, his thrusts hardening as she pinched her nipple and let out a breathy little scream, her walls pulsing around his aching length.
âFuck,â Kyojuro grit, feeling himself twitch within her as he watched Y/N play with herself, spurring him to go faster, deeper within her.
He moved his hand under one of her knees and lifted her leg over his shoulder, allowing him to plunge deeper into her silken heat, and he teasingly drew his fingers up and down her outer thigh.
At that moment, as Kyojuro was poised against the silhouette of the moon, his amber eyes glowing as he watched where he appeared and disappeared inside her, the realization hit Y/N like a storm, and it knocked her entirely off her axis.
She was in love with Kyojuro.
Who else could make her feel so sacred and yet so angry? Who else had been capable of slipping past every wall sheâd built within herself, capable of getting her to let her guard down before consuming her so furiously she had not realized sheâd ever been in danger?
He was fire, she was ice. One of them had to give to the other. Sheâd just always thought it would be him giving into her.
Yet there, beneath the moonlight, her climax rising above her like a tidal wave, Y/N realized that she was powerless against the waves that rose to pull her under, to never again let her up for air.
Distantly, Y/N felt the Flame Pillarâs callused thumb find her clit and her climax slammed into her, and she succumbed to the endless sea called Kyojuro.
--------------------------------------------------------
As Y/N broke apart around him, Kyojuro swore heâd never seen anything as beautiful in his entire life.
She shattered over him with the prettiest scream heâd ever heard, and he could barely make out the drawn-out syllables of his name as her hips jerked up against his while her inner walls threatened to squeeze the life from him.
Y/N finally collapsed back against the ground, her body limp from the exhaustion of her pleasure. Kyojuro then moved in chase of his own release, his hips pressed solidly against hers as he rutted his cock deep within her.
âFuck,â he groaned, his hands tightening around Y/Nâs waist. The familiar electricity of impending release tingled at the base of Kyojuroâs spine, and his stomach began to clench as he began his ascent to his climax. Â âY/N â I am going to finish soon,â his head was thrown back, and his groans were loud enough to alert anyone nearby of exactly what was transpiring between the two Hashira. âPlease â tell me where--â
âInside,â Y/N gasped, her legs tightening around Kyojuroâs hips in a feeble attempt to keep him within her, to ensure that he wouldnât yet leave her. âPlease, Kyojuro, stay.â
Kyojuro was a rational man, and he knew of one major reason not to allow his seed to spill inside Y/Nâs heavenly body. But all those rationalities flew out the window at the sound of her wanton and needy whimpers and the way her heat fluttered around him and Kyojuro did not think he could pull out of her if he wanted to.
Kyojuroâs thrusts became more and more frenzied and bruising, with the Flame Hashira hardly dragging his twitching length out of her as he neared his own climax.
âHold onto me,â he panted, falling forward so that his chest was pressed flush against Y/Nâs, one arm going to wrap around her waist while the other snaked over to where her arm lay in the grass, gripping her wrist to pin it up over her head as his fingers interlocked tightly with hers.
Y/N hiked her legs higher up his waist, crossing them at her shins so that he was buried deep within her. Her free arm looped under the one he had braced above her head to wrap around his back, her fingers digging into the rippling muscle and scarred skin that littered his shoulders.
âMake me yours, Kyojuro,â she whispered against his neck, squeezing his hips with her thighs.
Y/N felt his entire body tense at her words and Kyojuroâs moans turned into shouts as he gave one final, deep thrust within her before he exploded. His hand tightened fiercely around hers with the force of his climax,
The pleasure that surged up his spine had been white hot as he pushed himself as deeply as he could possibly go within Y/Nâs vice-like core. Kyojuro was not a novice to pleasure, but he had never finished as hard or as much as he did buried within her.
Kyojuro canted his hips, prolonging his release as he continued to empty himself into her, coming down from his earth-shattering high. Y/N mewled against his throat, her lips brushing against his sensitive pulse point as her legs spasmed. once more around his hips.
He finally stilled within her, arms shaking as he braced himself above her, to keep from crushing the exhausted woman beneath him.
He lowered his head down to her level. âAre you all right, my flame?â He panted, pressing a kiss between her brows before he rested his forehead heavily against hers.
She looked up at him from under her eyelashes and nodded shakily.
He no longer could keep himself from collapsing against Y/N, but as he fell forward, he gripped her and rolled, pulling her to his chest with his leaking cock still nestled deeply between her legs. Â
âI donât want to push you away,â Kyojuro murmured softly after a moment, his chest finally easing as his breathing slowed.
Y/N made a show of looking down to where they were still joined, the Flame Pillarâs pearly seed slowly leaking out of her and onto the grass below them. âI think Iâm about as close to you as physically possible, Rengoku.â
Kyojuro rolled his eyes and ground his hips slightly into her, causing Y/N to squeak against him.
âQuiet, woman, Iâm trying to apologize to you.â He trailed his fingers up and down her spine as she nestled back against his chest, chin perched on his pectoral as she waited for him to continue.
âI was just so angry. After the incident on the train, when I woke up in Kochoâs hospital â I was furious. With myself.â Amber eyes met hers and softened to pools of melted honey. âIt was never you I was angry with.â
Y/N held his gaze evenly, her voice firm. âBut you took it out on me all the same.â It wasnât an angry accusation â it was the truth; ugly and sharp. But it was real, and so was the tentative, knowing hope in her eyes.
âYes,â Kyojuro breathed. âYes, I did. And I am so sorry for it, Y/N.â His hand reached up to gently cup the side of her face, thumb smoothing over the soft expanse of her cheek. âMay I ask for your forgiveness?â
Y/N leaned her head into his warm palm, and smiled, softly.
âYou may ask, Kyojuro.â
He brushed his thumb along her lower lip. âCan you forgive me, Y/N?â
Y/N threw a leg out over his other hip, straddling him beneath her, though moving so fluidly that they remained connected at their base.
She rolled her hips against his, and he felt himself begin to harden within her once more. Kyojuro moaned softly, head falling back against the earth as he brought his hands up to steady her, fingers digging gently into her hips as she repeated the movement, again and again, until heâd fully stiffened within her.
âYes Kyojuro,â she sighed, hands coming to brace themselves against his abdomen as she began to ride him. âI forgive you.â
Kyojuro groaned, his head thrown back as he began to gently grind up into her, goosebumps erupting over his flesh as she lightly raked her nails over his pectorals and the hard ridges of his abdomen.
He wanted so very badly to lose himself within his pleasure, to allow Y/N to consume him whole and never let him go again, but his atonement was not complete.
Because Y/N had given him every opportunity to confess to her before, and he had been careless with them; she would not open that door herself again.
So he would.
âAnd may I give you my heart, Y/N?â He asked, his hands gliding sensually up from her hips to brace themselves on either side of her sensitive waist, squeezing her firmly.
Her pace had stuttered slightly once his words registered, eyes widening as she looked down at him, and Kyojuro hated that he was the reason the shadow of doubt lingered in her eyes.
âIs it truly mine?â She breathed, resuming the intoxicating rise and fall and push and grind of her hips, breasts beginning to bounce as she picked up her pace.
Kyojuroâs mouth watered, but he restrained himself, holding her gaze. âIt was only ever yours, Y/N.â
Y/N cried out then, her hips beginning to drop and roll into his with urgency. By the way her damp heat began to pulse and constrict around him, Kyojuro knew that she was barreling towards her release once more.
One hand left its searing position at her waist to drift down to where they were connected, his rough thumb toying with the sensitive nub that had her heavenly cunt squeezing him for dear life.
âMy beautiful flame,â he moaned, âhow lucky I am to have such a darling god be the keeper of my heart.â
Kyojuro rolled into her from below again, the hand still braced on her waist guiding himself to push deeper into her, as his thumb began to press harder into the apex of her thighs.
âSweet tempest, please,â Kyojuro panted, the relentless squeeze of Y/Nâs walls around his aching length beginning to drive him to the point of madness. âPlease, may I have your love?â
Y/Nâs moans were piercing as she half-sobbed above him, head thrown back into the night sky, the hoary glow of the moon making her look like a celestial deity given human form as she writhed above him.
âYes!â Y/N cried, âYes Kyojuro, you have always had my love!â
The moment the words fell from her lips, Kyojuro jolted upright, coming into a sitting position as Y/Nâs legs instantly wrapped around him. He wound one arm around her waist to bounce her in his lap, the other moving to circle his fingers around her nub.
Kyojuro nuzzled her nose with his own, his lips mere centimeters from hers as he pressed his forehead against her and held her eyes. âThen come for me, Y/N,â he murmured, his breath tickling her lips as he nuzzled her again. âCome for me, my love.â
Y/N seized around him like a vice, her head falling back as she unleashed a euphoric cry.
The force of her climax had caused her to arch backward in Kyojuroâs lap, thrusting her breasts up and forward, and Kyojuro bent to suck one into his greedy mouth, his own release imminent. The warm sticky rush of her pleasure combined with the way her velvety, molten walls constricted around him had Kyojuro seeing stars as his seed shot into her, hot and fast, his strangled groan muffled only by the soft plush of Y/Nâs breast as he filled her to her brim for the second time that night.
For a long moment, neither Pillar said anything as they came down from their mutual highs, Y/Nâs head pressed against Kyojuroâs shoulder while the Flame Pillar kept his arms firmly around her waist, his fingers trailing up and down her spine.
âY/N, are you all right?â He murmured into her ear, still buried deep within her heat.
Y/N nodded sleepily against his skin, savoring how full and complete she felt perched in his lap.
âI love you, Kyojuro.â She said so softly that the Flame Pillar thought his heart might break. Kyojuro pulled away slightly to bring his fingers beneath her chin where she lay against his shoulder. Gently, he tilted her face towards his and captured her lips with his own. Â
âMy darling flame,â He murmured against her lips as they broke apart, his eyes sweeping over her face, committing every detail of her beauty to memory. âThank you.â
Y/N gave him a lazy smile. âI cannot be your flame, Kyojuro,â she teased, âNot when I am made of ice.â
Kyojuro flipped her back beneath him and danced his lips teasingly across the bridge of her nose. âDonât you know, my beautiful foil, that ice can burn just as well as flame?â He pressed a feather-light kiss against her lips. âAnd I have been consumed by your silvery fire since I first laid eyes on you at Final Selection.â
Y/N looked up at him in wonder, her hand coming to rest against his face as she adoringly caressed his cheek.
âI love you, Y/N. I am so sorry it took me until now to say it.â
-------------------------------------------------â
Epilogue
Y/N made back it into her room, sight unseen, just as dawn had crept over the horizon.
Feet bare, she padded softly over to her waiting bed, shrugging out of Kyojuroâs uniform shirt and falling into her blankets, not caring at the growing discomfort she felt as the Flame Pillarâs seed dried in her undershorts.
She just wanted to sleep.
Y/N and Kyojuro had come together twice more before the pair realized that morning was imminent, and they needed to return to their respective dwellings before anyone noticed they were gone.
Y/N had lamented that Kyojuro had shredded her chest bindings beyond salvation and had worried sheâd be forced to sneak back into the Butterfly Mansion with nothing but her haori to cover her bare chest when Kyojuro slid his uniform shirt over her shoulders.
âNo one will think twice if they see me bare,â heâd said by way of explanation, gaze dropping momentarily to appreciate the marks he had left dotted across her breasts before rising back to her face. âI would like to keep you hidden, however.â
Kyojuro then fastened each button one by one, beginning from the bottom as he kissed his way up Y/Nâs torso until his lips found the sensitive spot beneath her jaw, which heâd nipped.
It had taken everything in her not to throw him down and have him for the fifth time.
Kyojuro had walked with her as far as the edge of the path back to Shinobuâs before parting her with a sweet kiss and a promise to return to her later in the morning. He had also mentioned, somewhat mischievously, that he would be inquiring into when Y/N could expect to be discharged from the Butterfly Mansion and return to her own Estate.
Her empty, person-free estate.
Y/N collapsed into her bed, ready to sleep for a precious few hours before her training would begin anew.
âSo, do you mind sharing where youâve been all night?â A dangerously sweet voice chirped from over by the door.
Y/N shot up out of her bed, stomach falling out of her ass, as she faced the smiling, enraged Insect Pillar seated primly atop her wooden stool opposite of her.
âI was quite worried, you know,â Shinobu tutted, the honey of her smile poisoned by the violence in her eyes.
Y/N had never been one to be at a loss for words, a quick comment, or a snappy retort always on hand when the situation called for it.
But to her horror, her mind had gone dreadfully blank, and her tongue was swollen stupid in her mouth.
Shinobu smiled like she knew, eyes slowly looking her over, and Y/N was left with the uncomfortable feeling that her friend could see every way sheâd allowed Kyojuro to utterly defile her.
âWill you be in need of a contraceptive?â Shinobu asked lightly, and Y/N felt like she would drop dead right then and there.
ââŚYes, please.â She managed to squeak, and the Insect Pillar turned to leave.
âI will bring it with your breakfast.â Her hand closed around the doorknob but stilled.
âAnd Y/N?â
The Ice Pillar whimpered as her friend turned to look back at her, all smiles and throbbing forehead veins.
âIf you ever keep the younger girls awake from the sounds of your activities with the Flame Pillar again, I will poison you both.â

i wanna talk about this thing gege said
iâve seen a lot of people saying that this is a bad way to write a story, and i couldnt disagree more. from a writerâs perspective, there is no reason to kill off a character if itâs not going to have impact.
in any case, i think this reaction points out two things iâve noticed about the jjk fandomďżź.
i. jjk fans prioritize enjoyment of characters over the plot
which is fine, i guess. iâm not gonna begrudge any readers the space to enjoy their fav characters. however, what i disagree with is the constant trashing of gege and jjk as a story because the narrative doesnt treat the characters as you want it to.
i mostly talk about these things from the perspective of someone who has been writing for a while, so i will take a second to acknowledge from the reader perspective. itâs easy to get attached to characters and see them as real people in your life.
but they arent real people. they only exist for the authorâs intentions. every time i see someone complain that âx character only died because plotâ i just think âyes?â characters exist for the plot. they exist to serve the narrative. they live and die for the plot, and that isnât a bad thing. this is a story. that is how stories work.
with characters like gojo or choso, itâs easy to look back and see their character arcs and how their ends fit their purpose in the story, but i think people get so caught up in wanting to fuck the character, or fanon, that they forget their original purpose is to do what gege wants them to do.
this is a war against the most powerful, most evil sorcerer in history. of course characters are going to die, and of course itâs going to be characters we love. itâs honestly unrealistic to expect anything else.
and i think itâs really disrespectful to say so many rude things to gege because he is thinking about the story he wants to tell, and not the story that best suits your favorite character.
ii. few people want to feel anything from what theyâre reading anymore
which again, is totally fine, but maybe read something else?
tragic stories have existed and enjoyed immense popularity for millennia. and theres nothing wrong with that. thereâs nothing wrong with authors intentionally stirring up their readersâ emotions.
i wanna bring attention to the origins of the words âtragedyâ and âcatharsisâ
âtragedyâ is a genre that stems from greek drama based on human suffering and the terrible or sorrowful events that befall the main character. the intention of of tragedy is to invoke âcatharsisâ
âcatharsisâ is commonly used to refer to the purification of thoughts and emotions by way of expressing them. in terms of tragedy, this refers to arousing a negative emotion with the intention of expelling it so the audience can walk away feeling relieved.
for all intents and purposes, jjk is a tragedy. itâs meant to make you feel sad. thatâs gegeâs intention. yet every time people feel upset by a specific event, they call âbad writing.â if anything, according to what jjk is, itâs good writing if you feel sad.
i have seen some people say that jjk wasnât set up this way, and i disagree so strongly that itâs hard to comprehend.
jjk0 ends with gojo having to kill his best friend, his one and only. tragedy. yuutaâs story is tragic too, having cursed rika and accidentally isolated himself just because he didnât want her to die.
jjk starts with yuuji faced with execution just because because he wanted to honor his grandfatherâs dying wishes. within a handful of chapters, thereâs yuujiâs âdeathâ and junpei, and thereâs a clear set up of tragedy and repeated loss, despite characters giving their best effort.
i could get into how this relates to my interpretation of the themes of jjk, and sharing burden/responsibility to be stronger together, but thatâs another point.
tldr; the point of this post is to say that gege killing characters and making readers feel sad is not bad writing or a bad narrative choice. itâs true to his intentions and the essence of jjk. if you donât like that, then donât read. but thereâs no reason to disrespect gege and his hard work just because itâs not your cup of tea

Task Force 141 + Reader (Callsign-Crash): friendship headcanons
a/n: Hello hello! Just some random headcanons that I had written down for Crash and her relationships with the members of the 141 team. Nothing romantic, just some wholesome stuff.
original gif by @collinnmckinley
also, this is really freaking long, sorry in advance. enjoy reading!Â
Before getting thrown out the window and getting her callsign, she was quiet and shy around the group. Opting to listen to others conversations, rarely adding to it.
Honestly intimidated with how tightly knit the team is, and given her previous teamâs history, she was scared to get close.
Volunteered to be the DD whenever the group goes out to a bar. Fortunately, most of the time, Ghost is sober(enough) to help her get everyone into the car and into their rooms
Would silently comfort Soap and Gaz whenever they threw up, rubbing their backs and getting them water.
In the mornings after, she got everyone a breakfast burrito. Soap and Gaz are eternally grateful. Got a little information about her when they asked why she got them food. âHelp with my hangovers during college.â Soap and Gaz gave each other a look as she walks away
After the window incident, Crash becomes a lot more open. Seeing how they treat her as if she has been with them for years, it wasnât fair to them with how closed off she was.
Soap:
He talks to you a lot and you donât mind. He just comes out and starts rambling on whatever he has interested him at that moment. You donât really say anything, just sitting there awkwardly (because why would he want to talk to the newbie instead of his friends) but nodding to what he says anyways. One time though, he looks at you and says âThanks for listening to me. Itâs nice to have someone not tell me to âShut the fuck up Mactavish.ââ
Literally you after he tells you this:
âyouâre my friend now. weâre having soft tacos laterâ vibes
Would send him memes and funny videos whenever you guys are on leave
His contact name on your phone is âBubblesâ
Would show you how to make bombs out of random shit. Set them off in bare fields or abandon buildings. Had a couple close calls
Will let you call him Johnny but you call him Mac instead.
âAww, why not, lassie?â
âIâd rather not get my ass beat by your boyfriend.â
Calls you Lassie along with your callsign. When he wants to piss you off, he calls you Mini Ghost or Little Ghost
Like Ghost, you rarely take off your balaclava and tactical glasses
âThe mask, take it off.â
âNah, I donât wanna.â
âYou ugly?â
âNot as ugly as you old man.â
Has yet to seen you drunk though and he intends to get you there some day
Holds his hand when heâs throwing up
You would use him as a pillow during rides back to the base
The first person to tell him about any drama thatâs happening in your life
Gives you advice about men
"Men are stupid, trust me, I am one."
Loves it when you would go on ramblings about the things you like. Anime confuses the hell out of him but he would always ask you about the plot and your favorite characters. Heâd ask you about the current artist you listen to and has a list of recommendations from you so he could look them up when he gets home
After a mission gone wrong and believing that it was his fault, you seek him out, finding him sitting alone in the meeting room. You tell him
âItâs going to be okay. I trust you, John.â
He tears up and you wrap your arms around him.
Gaz:
With you two being the youngest, you bond over similar experiences
Sometimes share exactly one brain cell with each other. Sometimes you, Gaz and Soap share a brain cell
Brings out the chaotic gen z energy of each other
Your guysâ energy:
Follows each other on social media and would send each other tiktoks at ungodly hours
Kind of have a competition against each other to see whoâs Priceâs favorite child is
Gaz finally has someone who he can talk about anime with
Favorite shows to watch together: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Jojoâs Bizarre Adventure
Similar music taste. The whole team listens to Queen, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and a few more others. However, Gaz and Crash have the same love of rap and indie pop. Anything they find on tiktok will be added to their shared Spotify playlist.
Gaz would ask about how college was like. He thought about going but ultimately for him, the military was the better option
âWere you part of a sorority?â
âOh hell no. Loved going to the parties though. Always had top shelf vodka.â
âReally? Thought students couldnât afford it.â
âWhen it comes to alcohol, we find a way.â
Share the same sentiment of feeling like theyâre not doing enough in the team. After a particularly rough mission, you two would find a corner and just sit together in silence.
Would break the silence by quoting something from vine or tiktok and all things would be okay again
Price:
He has adoption papers ready
Crash, despite your name, is polite, respectful and responsible. Would always help Price clean up after meetings and briefs
Same with Soap, you would listen quietly to Priceâs war stories and even his favorite fishing trips
Saw in your file about what happened to your old team and captain. Vows to never pull the same stunt as them
Sadden to see how youâre so young and has seen and dealt with many things already. It breaks his heart that thereâs more that youâll experience.Â
You, Soap and Gaz would do dumb shit all the time but you knew when it was the right time to bail. Of course, they would snitch on you to Price. Youâd rarely get in trouble though
Basically you two:
Would gift him cigars from the countries youâd visit during leave
Also a matching set of torch lighters. His has a special green flame while yours is pink.Â
You donât smoke anymore but you would hangout with him and help him finish reports together.
Price often thinks about a life where he didnât join the military. A life of normalcy. To go to a home filled with life.Â
Would have loved to have kids and technically, he still can but his job makes it almost impossible.Â
But with Gaz and now you, you two are his pride and joy.
Would be the âhipâ dad and will always ask about the new slang and memes
âThis food is-what you kids call it...uh, busting!â
You and Gaz look at each other, âItâs bussinâ.â
âThis food is bussinâ!â
Ghost:
Did not to want to get close to you at all.Â
Was honestly peeved when Price told him that he was going to mentor you
âI donât want to play babysitter, Captain.â
Surprised to see how short you were. All of the rumors and information he was told, they never mention your size
At first, he hated how you would follow him around like a lost puppy.Â
âLeave me alone, go bother Soap or something.â
Doesnât miss the flash of hurt in your eyes but you turn around anyways.
Before you joined, he, Price and Laswell were all sitting in Priceâs office, his phone on speaker. He was reading over your file before Priceâs contact said
âShe reminds me of Ghost when I worked with him seven years ago.â
He looks up from the folder, Priceâs eyebrows shoot up in surprise and Laswell nodding.
âI think weâll have her transferred to us,â Price replies.
Hates to admit but heâs impressed. Thought the rumors was bullshit but you proved him wrong, time and time again
You still have a lot of things to learn and even more practice to do but he believes in you
Does not go easy. Heâs merciless. Has put you down countless times and reprimanded you more. You would always leave training sessions with a new bruise. The rest of the team gets concerned with his training methods.
But you still get up and you blink away the tears whenever he shouts at you
At about five months after you joined, on a mission, you spot an enemy behind him before he does and without a word, you quickly take your knife out and throw it towards the man behind him.Â
He opens his mouth to yell at you but he sees the enemy on the corner of his eye and watch him slump down. Your knife stuck in his bleeding neck
Gives you a nod after that. Pulling out your knife and handing it back to you
Knife throwing would be one of the training sessions youâd do. It was also a good time for some small chat
Finds out that youâre also a part of the âDead Mom, Shitty Dadâ club
It takes a year for him to SLIGHTLY open up to you
Told you about one of his favorite dishes his mom made and his favorite Queen song was âYouâre My Best Friendâ
Even told you how he likes his Earl Grey prepared
It scares him of how much you remind him of his mom and brother. You have her kindness and his determination. He will never tell you this
You, along with the team, become the very thing he cares about and will protect you to the best of his ability.

can we have villain kenji dating headcanons pleaseđđ
Oh boy...well, I can try
Villain! Kenji x Fem reader
Mentions of blood, fighting (not with you), and death/character death (not you), you being morally grey...and Kenji being a simp.
He's a complete sweetheart to you and WORSHIPS the ground you walk on. Ever heard of a feminist nut-case? It's him. He respects you wholeheartedly and sees you for you because his mama raised him right.
Super gentle and a soft-talker with you. You're...actually the ONLY person he's like this around. To everyone else, arrogant prick x10 on a regular basis.
He likes to cuddle you after a long day and whisper sweet-nothings into your ear. "I missed you so much" "I love you so much, baby" "stay with me, please" cue the cutest goo goo eyes you've ever seen. How could you say no to him?
This man doesn't know when to stop gifting so whenever he even THINKS about something you would like you better prepare for there to be a box of whatever product it is on your doorstep.
Gamer girl? New gaming equipment in your favorite color. Book girl? New books on your doorstep. Baker, artist, crafter? All of it on your doorstep.
You ask for something? Consider it done. You LOOK at something in the mall? It's yours.
If he thinks a certain outfit would look good on you or he finds a certain candy, you like? All yours...just please don't leave him.
Ken lets you ride on his motorcycle from time to time. He prefers you in the back with your arms wrapped around him because it's a comforting feeling, not to mention safe. But if you want, he'll let you sit in the front but it's rare.
A guy cat-called you once while Kenji was there with you. Yeah uh...that guy was sent to the hospital. It was the first time you've ever seen him so...angry. You've heard rumors of Kenji's temper but seeing as he was so sweet to you, you just thought the rumors were just...rumors.
That was until you literally had to pull him off the guy so he wouldn't kill him. Seriously, he was strangling him after punching him in the face 10 times.
It was...kind of hot to be fair.
Kenji's hair was disheveled, his nose bleeding, and a fiery look in his eyes. And you found his act of rage a little sweet. If he was willing to strangle a guy for just catcalling you, what would he do if a guy touched you?
You then realized you found a good guy who's willing to stand up for you! Albeit a bit crazy, but still a good guy.
After his anger went away, the soft side of him came back and apologized to you profusely.
"I- I'm so sorry baby, p- please don't leave! Y- You were never supposed to see that side of me, shit! I'm a good guy I promise I am! He...he just, he deserved it! He shouldn't have been talking to you like that! You're a princess to me baby, a queen! And you deserve to be treated like one...please don't leave me..."
He meant every word of it girl...every. last. word. Especially the "don't leave me" parts.
Before you came along, Kenji was alone. So utterly alone. His beloved mother was dead. His father....ugh (don't even get him started on that). No friends or relatives to talk to or come by. One-night stands didn't do anything except a couple seconds of bliss.
So, like I said, so completely and utterly alone.
But when you came along...you changed that. An angel from the heavens that chose him to spend their time with.
This man would let the world burn if it meant to save your life. He doesn't like people very much anyway.
He introduced you to Lillith, his black IBM female boa. Let's pretend you like snakes.
Snake ahead, TRIGGER WARNING
You find her absolutely adorable and sweet. She likes you a lot too! You let her hang around your neck or arm when Kenji brings her too your dates or when you hang out at his house.
Kenji loves that his two favorite girls are getting along. He has many pictures of you two chilling in his phone and looks at them from time to time to actually feel something other than anger or nothing while he's out.
You brought back a light in him that he thought had died a long time ago. A reason to live...well, apart from baseball, killing Kaiju's, and ruining his father's legacy of course.
Fancy dining places are a must. You can't blame the man for want to wine and dine you...and showing you off to the press a little bit.
Hmmm...you found it odd that the guy that cat-called you hasn't pressed charges or uttered a peep about what ken did to him. You understood why the news hadn't caught footage of the incident tho.
It happened late at night when you and Kenji were coming out of a bar. It had been raining that night and most of the lights went out due to the water getting to the electricity.
So, it would be hard for the cameras to pick up faces very well due to the darkness and most of them circuiting out too.
But it was so strange...nothing from him.
You got your answer when you turned the news on though.
The guy that cat-called you was found dead in a trash bin next to the EXACT same bar you had your date with Kenji. Ishima Agama was his name.
He seemed to have suffered horrible lacerations, burns, severed limbs, and much other nasty things.
His death...didn't bother you though. You figured Kenji must've done it. I mean...who else would've done it? It only happened two weeks after Kenji pummeled him, and it was in the exact same place it beat his ass.
You always trusted your gut and your gut says it's Kenji. But instead of seeing this as a red flag, you saw it as a green one!
He killed for you just because of a cat-calling degenerate. That's the nicest thing a guy has ever done for you!
After dating for about a year or so, he told you that he was Ultraman! Which...is the coolest freaking thing ever!
He saved Japan from Kaiju's countless of times! So, what if his methods were a little violent? The Kaiju's were too. That's how violent animals were supposed to be treated right? Either with sedatives or brute force.
He was so confused as to why you were so cool with it but as you explained your reasons...he knew you were a keeper.
After that little adventure he introduced you to the idea of Kaiju meat. Something Kenji has tailored to him and a few other rich people (let's pretend Kaiju's don't have radiation). Turns out the KDF also sells a few cutlets of meat to a few rich folks who want a taste of a rare "delicacy" meat.
It's actually quite good when it's cooked and served right, better that wagyu.
Sooo, yeah, you two lovebirds get along great!
His anger issues, arrogance, or murderous tendencies to affect you because you love him for who he is...and for the fact that he never acts that way toward you.
That's all I've got, if you guys want anything more specific, lmk!

Hello! I really love your drawings and your interpretations of the Cult of the Lamb characters! If you donât mind me asking, I was curious on how the (ex) bishops are with the rest of the lambs cult? Like, how they act with regular people since they were so used to being revered as gods but now theyâre just people
Thank you! Ramble incoming
Leshy: hes rude and loud to others, not because he hates them but because thats how he is. Many of the followers do get used to that and even like to hang around him during parties and sparring events, where hes more than happy to hurt the ones that try to challenge him (He wont admit it around the lamb but he enjoys the parties and the booze)
Heket: keeps mostly to herself. She's very respected and becomes the main cook of the cult after she joins. The few that arent intimidated by her make conversation with her, she sometimes likes to spend time at the bar when Leshy is tending the place. Very secretive about her cooking and wont share recipes.
Kallamar: probably the most annoyed to be treated normally but ok around followers that are polite and dont seem too threatening. Even flirts with some of them and gifts gems to his favorites.
Shamura: rarely interacts with others. doesnt like being near loud noises and crowds, so often seen near the edges of the camp, their own cabin, the tailor or the camps library. They are kind to others mostly.
Narinder(idk if to count him as an ex bishop sometimes but eh) : would rather avoid being near the others, but since hes often following the lamb around to watch them being the leader/god of death he has no choice. Intimidating af, will ignore followers even if spoken to directly most of the time. He seems more relaxed and open to talk to others when farming or fishing though.

i know malus already received a brief mention here but since he was one of my favorite parts of act 2, could we get a little more detail on that encounter or just how roisia felt about the house of healing overall? my headcanon is 1 part kind of shaken about seeing what it devolved into, 1 part "oh my god you're all so STUPID" haha
[Malus previously mentioned in this post.]
I liked his character too! It was a great encounter. Analysis under the cut.
Since the events of Baldur's Gate 3 is the second of Roisia's "Grand Adventures"âthe first being the events of Divinity: Original Sin (another amazing Larian game if you haven't played)âshe is already accustomed to Necromancer-Kings, liches, and piles and piles and piles of corpses and... cadaverous goo. So I don't think that she was aghast at Malus, his assistants, or what was generally going on in the House of Healing because she's seen that sort of thing before. Been there! Done that!
I think what would unnerve her every time is the active torture of a living creature right before her eyes. So that would apply to Spike torturing Liam and Malus torturing the Distressed Patient. Roisia is accustomed to flaying, boiling, amputating, and doing all manner of things to her patients, but her patients don't mind because they're dead. So I think that's where the mix of agony (an empathetic response to seeing another in pain before her), rage (an emotional response to seeing another being unjustly treated), and a sort of... scholarly competitiveness - ("I am ten times the anatomist you ever were, and I will show you how superior I am with what remains of your body!") - comes in.
I don't think that Roisia felt that Malus was stupid, necessarily, just twisted. And, fortunately for Roisia, easily manipulated in a way that some academics of his stature might be: stroke their egos with the precision of one of their own scalpels, demonstrate some level of competency while humbling oneself at the altar of their knowledge, turn their own words and implements against them, then desecrate that selfsame altar with their own blood. Rinse and repeat.
