"I'm an antishipper!" -> ideology is don't like don't read, has never harassed anyone online before
"I'm a proshipper!" -> has harassed people and will harass people again for any reason
#reminder that words have meaning and if the antis and the pros are using different definitions of proship you are not getting anywhere#regardless of your stance#I have heard someone actively for real say “but the definition of proship changed so I'm using the new one”#-> 90% of proshippers use the original one#-> you guys just want a word to put in your dnis#I have seen MANY proshippers very much not block and move on but try to argue and such#your whole thing is supposed to be block and dldr. so block and stop arguing with people who don't give a fuck#OR people who are actively aggressive OR minors who honestly shouldn't be involved in any of this bullshit#again. as per usual. I think the entire dichotomy of pro/antiship is entirely stupid#there is no way to put all of your opinions on such a nuanced subject as censorship and dark themes in fiction in one neat label#and honestly it's not something you want to do#but if you're going to insist on using the stupid words at LEAST agree on a definition and respect your own fuckass values#mumblings//

i joined a fandom recently that has been active since the 90s, with more content being made daily than i'm actually used to. i was really worried about antis, obviously--who wouldn't be?--so i sort of sequestered myself in a little hole trying to figure out who was safe and who wasn't.
and you wanna know something? this active, older fandom is actually full of people who are pro-ship or don't get involved in the discourse at all. i have seen ONE "proshippers dni" among the bios of the artists of the fanart i have been engaging with. (and i had to find their twitter to even see that, they didn't have it on their tumblr bio.)
i'm sending this ask because i want people to know that these spaces exist. there are entire swaths of fandom who are content to ship and let ship. i'm not naming the fandom because i really don't need antis deciding to be a problem in the tag or something, but the regulars aren't antis. i'm still working up the nerve to make friends, but it really is a nice place, and i hope it's a good experience for me.
i won't leave you with nothing, though: if anyone wants a fandom that is simply too large for antis to overrun it, check out star trek. i'm not kidding. the mother of modern day fandom is in fact not a safe haven for antis. who'd have thunk, right? strange new worlds is currently airing new episodes and lower decks season 4 starts in september. (you should start with the original series, though, it's fandom history! our fandom ancestors were not joking about the homoeroticism of kirk and spock!)
anyway, thanks for reading, and for running this nice blog. it's always comforting to see people with sense in their heads. <3

omg, omg, omg. Like. I feel like this is my time to shine! First, let me say that Wangxian is my current main OTP and has been for the past several years. Untamed/MDZS got in my head and will NOT let go, so even while I'm writing in other fandoms, I still read almost exclusively MDZS. I love it so fucking much you guys, I would beg everyone to check it out, because having been in SO MANY fandoms (including a vast majority of the ones involved in this poll) it has the most quality fan created content BY FAR.
All that being said, The X-Files is the property that introduced me to fandom when I was in 6th grade. I was there, Gandalf, when the COTR happened (conversation on the rock, from Quagmire). If Spirk is the granddaddy of fandom as we know it, then MSR are the parents of online fandom, as we know it. The early 90s saw a huge shift in how fans connected with one another and distributed content, from the old phone conversations/chain mail-esque fics that started back in the 60s, to the conventions and 'zines and usenet forums that followed over the next few decades. But with AOL bringing internet into the average American living room, it wasn't just die hard fans who already had the internet know-how or fandom hookup who could get more involved. Now anyone could make a free website on geocities or angelfire, and boy, did we ever.
The X-Files wasn't the only fandom big at that point -- you had the newest (at the time) Treks, Xena and Hercules, Interview with a Vampire (whether Anne Rice liked it or not), Due South, Stargate, etc, to name a few -- but X-Files was the most mainstream. It managed to pull in huge audiences across demographics, was critically acclaimed, and sort of defied the expectations for a genre television show. The first several seasons captured the zeitgeist of the era. Add to that, Mulder and Scully had a sizzling, undeniable, compelling chemistry from the first moment they appear on screen together, and that developed into a deep abiding love, trust, and unshakeable partnership over the rest of the series.
So of course it dominated those early days of dial-up internet fandom. There were countless individual websites for just about every aspect of the show, the characters, the relationships, and of course you never ran out of fic to read. And in those spaces, you had two main groups (hello proto anti/proshippers lmfao): The Noromos (who were opposed to a romantic relationship between Mulder/Scully and, like modern queer-baiting shows, told us we were imagining things) and The Relationshippers (which yes, eventualy was shortened to 'shipper, and voila! there is the origin of the word as you know it today!) Amongst the shippers, there was also a lot of squeeing over the beautiful moments between our beloved Mulder and Scully, and frankly we were spoiled. There were SO MANY of those moments.
Now, I know it might be difficult for some of you who have never lived without AO3, or indeed even other multi-fandom sites with the ability to search and sort fics based on ratings/topic/summaries/etc, but back in those days you mostly either had an alphabetical list of all fics (and maybe broken down by ship if there were enough to warrant it) or a chronological list. Summaries were very brief, and ratings were often only NC-17 or not. This is a good example of one of the better archives that remain..
But when you have so many episodes that you might be setting your fic before or after, so many profound shippy moments you might want to refer to (and, while episode titles were useful, often episodes contained more than one good scene/conversation/look/touch/etc, which makes it trickier). Which is where all our acronyms come in -- so many that YAXA, yet another xfiles acronym, became a thing. It's where MSR (mulder/scully relationship) and COTR come from. We had extensive dictionaries at the time, so you could quickly refer to specific scenes or lines of dialogue and everyone would know what you meant. You had MIJ and SIJ (Mulder or Scully in Jeopardy), CITDBTB (conversation in the dark by the bed -- pilot ep), CITC (conversation in the car - Tooms), you had DDEB and the GATB (David Duchovony Estrogen Brigade, Gillian Anderson Testosterone Brigade) and the SWILS (straight women in love with Scully ahahahah), and on, and on, and on. Hundreds of them, fam, I have forgotten so many. We were so unhinged! But you can see how it might be a precursor to what we think of tagging, now.
Anyway, between coining the word 'shipper and jumpstarting internet fandoms, MSR has a HUGE part in fandom history.
AO3 Top Relationships Bracket- Semifinals
This poll is a celebration of fandom history; we're aware that there are certain issues with many of the listed pairings and sources, but they are a part of that history. Please do not take this as an endorsement, and refrain from harassment.

Your tags on the proship/antiship post are gold.
You put into words what i haven't been able. Thanks.
It really is like that, some proshippers are deranged and viceversa
Thanks 👍
Putting this under a read-more in case people don't want to really see this. A TL;DR: PRECISE DEFINITIONS, PLEASE. SAY WHAT YOU MEAN INSTEAD OF HIDING UNDER A MEANINGLESS LABEL. I'M GOING TO DEFAULT TO BEING WARY OF YOU IF YOU USE THESE IDENTIFIERS WITHOUT ANY ELABORATION. I DO NOT USE ANY OF THESE TERMS AS A SELF-IDENTIFIER BECAUSE I HAVE ACTUAL PROBLEMS TO BE WORRIED ABOUT.
I think all of the currently-used terms are extremely stupid, reductionist, and reactionary for something that really shouldn't be such a vitriolic dichotomy. Nobody has a consistent definition of what any of the terms mean in the first place, so you get people arguing in circles about the same words they're using with different meanings.
Might as well elaborate on the tags I added on my reblog of this post by cryptotheism (Giving a screen-snip as well in case it gets deleted.), because I added those tags at the ass-end of last night and wasn't really able to get as in-depth as I wanted to.
So.
PRECISION, PLEASE.
THAT'S ONE OF THE BIG THINGS THAT PISSES ME OFF ABOUT THIS.
Nobody really has any consistent definition of whatever the hell a "proship", "anti-anti", or "anti" is, and none of the terms make any form of sense to anyone who doesn't know what the context is already. Even to people that do know the context, the fact that the only terms are all related only to shipping (or, in the case of anti-anti, caring more for "owning The Enemy™" than actual analysis), which is basically just slamming two dolls together to make them KEES to 90% of people and looks stupid for taking so intensely seriously. It doesn't matter how much anybody identifying under these particular terms explains their view, the fact that the predominant terms they cram themselves under all tie back to the word "shipping" creates assumptions that may be wildly different from what they're advocating. If this is supposed to be a debate about exploring "taboo" subjects in fiction without automatically endorsing the taboos vs. approaching media showcasing these "taboos" with caution while checking if they actually used tact, then they need to not use terms that automatically link to nonsense shipping disk-horse.
For this, I'm going to not be assuming that it's only shipping. The names may be entirely shipping-based, but the debate that's being raged isn't, and that's what's important. If I was in charge, I'd have those meaningless terms outright obliterated from the popular lexicon of the debate, because they don't mean anything.
-
So, to elaborate directly from my original tags in the image, of how much these "definitions" of these terms varies:
"Proship/Anti-anti": Do you actually care about the possibility of fiction allowing for the exploring and education about "taboo" subject matter without outright glorifying it? How are people supposed to learn information on them otherwise, outside of clinical-and-possibly-outdated academic papers without any emotional context? Fiction doesn't 100% directly affect reality, just because some people use a piece of fiction as an excuse to commit atrocities doesn't mean you will, right?
Or are you just using the broadness of the term to wank to underage incest porn while making it everyone else's problem, parading yourself around like you're the second coming of Lolita (the book) when you're actually just the tasteless trainwreck that is the ending of Usagi Drop? Accusing anyone that criticizes a particular media having (insert negative general literary thing here, i.e. lack of tact/taste/proper knowledge on a sensitive topic it's trying to portray) of being a book-burning reactionary child? Completely disregarding people's boundaries (personal discomforts, full-on triggers, just general respect, etc.) because "Fiction doesn't affect reality, puriteen, get over yourself and grow up"?
"Anti": Do you actually care about reminding people to critically consume media, warning them to be careful not to fall into normalizing/glorifying things like incest/zoophilia/pedophilia/etc? Being wary as to whether or not the "taboo" a media is trying to explore is actually tackled with any competency? Analyzing as to whether a piece of media fucked up their portrayal of a topic out of actual malice or just plain human incompetence?
Or are you so neurotic about "Problematic™ Things" that you're using people's (rightful) hatred of things like pedophilia as a springboard to crusade against anything that could be seen as Problematic™? So afraid of human error or the existence of "Evil™ People™" that have fucked up portraying sensitive topics that you're trying to bar anyone from ever exploring them again so as to not risk it? Do you find yourself parroting "THINK OF THE CHILDREN, ANY PROBLEMATIC™ MEDIA RISKS TURNING THEM INTO DEGENERATES™" talking points?
-
Look at these terms. Look at the absolute gulf of difference between these things I've compiled under one term alone, all of which have a gradient between them. This makes a big problem of everybody assuming the extremes: One side thinks the other is advocating for incestuous dog-fucking, while the other thinks the first group are a bunch of murderous puritanical zealots advocating for book-burning. See the problem here?
Again, the predominant terms being shipping-based is dishonest to the fact that this isn't just shipping. It also relates to things like portraying marginalized demographics (PoC, LGBTQIA+, addicts, disabled people, etc.) and exploring sensitive topics such as suicide and sexual assault. Like, just because David Cage is a hack writer that keeps on trying to tackle race/assault topics really badly without any sense of taste of respect, that the Netflix 13 Reasons Why show was a massive tactless fuck-up that absolutely exploded as a result, doesn't mean that those topics should be barred from ever being explored again. People also need to realize that saying that they're doing something doesn't mean that they actually are doing it, so critical analysis may still be required.
It's one of the reasons I don't find myself trusting people who self-identify as "pro/anti-anti/anti" without any elaboration as to what they actually mean, because it could all means SO MANY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS, and just because they call themselves something doesn't mean that they actually are that. This focus on black-and-white, all-or-nothing, Us-versus-Them mentality, combined with just how imprecise the terms are, is just a clusterfuck that makes everyone that's Terminally In The Argument (especially Terminally Online™) go absolutely insane. A lot of people who are getting more sensible are starting to throw away the nonsense terms as self-identifiers for multiple reasons, anyway.
There's a certain clarity that comes from realizing that A) Some people will try to use anything as an excuse for abhorrent actions, including outright lying about the thing in question, and B) Some people are just plain stupid, refusing to understand the themes/subtext of a work no matter how unsubtle it is, and/or will start to unironically glorify blatant taboos just to spite the people that told them not to. Sometimes it doesn't matter how well a topic is tackled, somebody will twist it in some way just because they can, but that doesn't mean that the true version that was originally created no longer has any value or substance in the argument.
I have my own bad history with people identifying under both terms that leads to me not automatically trusting people that identify under them: I remember dealing with this one girl IRL that kept on trying to ship me with my IRL family members because "you aren't SUPPOSED to have a good relationship with your relatives, so that means you HAVE to be FUCKING EACH OTHER", and some guy online that kept on filling the tags of a specific media I like with "INCEST IS SO HOT U GUYZZZZ UwU DON'T BE IN DENIAL I KNOW EVERYONE SHIPS INCEST" bullshit in the main tags until I blocked them. Another case is someone I saw that kept on spamming a fandom tag with "THIS MEDIA IS PROBLEMATIC™ FOR X/Y/Z-" posts and then when I went to their blog I saw that they were linking all of their "Anti-Problematic™ Crusade" posts into Christian Evangelicalism and outright turbo-racist rhetoric.
If you read all of this, thank you for your time 👍. Again, I don't identify with either "group" (if you can even call them that) lmao. As long as people identify under those specific terms without any elaboration and nuance, I'm going to call both of them fools. Listen to me when I say: Respect people's boundaries (discomforts, triggers, etc.), learn how to curate your own experience (blocking tags/blogs, etc.), take a step back as to not get caught up in arguing-in-circles nonsense such as the mess I've been talking about, and for fuck's sake KEEP YOUR TURBO-CONTROVERSIAL SHIT OUT OF THE MAIN TAGS (whether it be some Spicy Taboo-Based Headcanon™, or bitching that the aforementioned Spicy Taboo-Based Headcanon™), not everybody is here to start arguments lmao.

Guess who wrote an entire rant in response to an anti who tagged me in a post regarding the Stanley parable, only for it to not post because they had blocked me by the time I hit send 💀
I'm gonna rewrite it here
@the-redacted-line (obvi don't harrass them, don't engage with them, i don't know the full INs and OUTs of how blocking on tumblr works but I'm hoping they'll see this)
Here's the tags they put in that post
I never was saying I want to see problematic content of TSP, there's already a few good things on AO3, I was complaining because I'm barred from interacting with 90% of the TSP fandom here on Tumblr.
The Stanley Parable is SO important to me, I can't express that enough. I actively avoid problematic fan work with it because it's not something I enjoy or seek out with this game. I just, Yk, support people who do want that!
I'm upset that I can't interact with amazing art because I'm not an asshole about made up and intangible shit. I'm upset I can't make friends with most people who enjoy this thing because I'll be called a p*dophile.
I'm not at fault for YOU seeing my proship post that was tagged with 4 different variations of "proship" solely for filtering purposes. If YOU don't want to see proship stuff, filter the tags. The filtering system exists for a goddamn reason.
I have a long list of variations of various things filtered and I never see shit I don't want to see. And when I do? Guess what's going in my filter list?
I was sexually assaulted as a child and I am haunted with terrible intrusive thoughts of sexual assaults, murder and violence. I go to therapy and I've done all the coping mechanisms in the book. Nothing has been nearly as effective as coping with fiction. My therapist and I work extensively to make sure it's not having the opposite effect on me.
Some antis argue that if it's to cope, you should keep it to yourself. I'm disabled, and I don't always have the energy or resources to create this content I need to cope with my day to day life. People posting fanfiction, Fanart, original work, and other fanwork with problematic content is almost the only way I can access this coping mechanism.
Problematic content is IMPORTANT. It's not for everyone, it's not supposed to BE for everyone. Like everytjing, it should be clearly marked, tagged and labeled so people who don't want to and shouldn't see it DONT.
There are very little problematic fanworks that aren't clearly marked. The ones aren't marked are a problem that should be addressed, but the solution isn't to ban and shame problematic content.
Proshipper doesn't stand for "Problematic Shipper", it stands for "Pro Shipping". It's supporting people who are problematic shippers.
Its an acknowledgement that fiction affects reality, but in a different way than reality affects reality. It's an acknowledgement that people can explore things in fiction without it bearing any meaning on them as a person. It's an acknowledgement that it can affect reality and make people's trauma worse, so things should be clearly marked. It's an acknowledgement that fiction can affect reality and give survivors a safe environment to work through their trauma.
Its an acknowledgement that fiction and reality are different planes of existence. They're connected in so many ways but they are seperate.
It's an acknowledgement that survivors deserve to heal. Just because my way of healing doesn't work for you doesn't mean it's disgusting and shouldn't be used. Just because it's unhealthy for you doesn't mean it's unhealthy for me.
No one is trying to say you have to want to see, make, or support problematic fictional content. All we ask is that you stop labeling it as wrong, disgusting, and unhealthy. All we ask is that people who don't like it stop harrassing and demeaning those who do.
I have no idea what this person in particular has done, I doubt they've done anything, they haven't harrassed me. I want to make that clear.
It's just hard to be on your side when your side got me in the emergency room because of the massive amount of death threats, graphic violence descriptions, and insults I got in my Tumblr ask box on a daily basis.
I rarely ship problematic ships because my hyperfixation rarely have an opportunity for them (if we ignore Rick and Morty, that's very recent and out of the ordinary for me)
But I refuse to support and be in the side of people who think fiction is so much more important than reality that I get told I deserved to be raped as a child because I thought two cartoon characters should kiss.
You may not have said that, but that's who's side your on.
#long post#trauma dump#tw anti#the stanley parable#discourse#shipcourse#proship#proshipper#proshippers#proship safe#proshipper safe#anti anti#anti antis#for the love of god dont harrass the person i tagged thank u#tw rape#tw csa

Perhaps you're not getting the point of the original post, so I'm going to back up a bit. You may not have been in fandom spaces for long enough to know that "proshipping" is a term created by antis so they could carve out an "us vs. them" space in fandom.
Proshipping was the default. "Live and let live" was the motto most fans lived by, at least when I first got into fanfiction in the 90s. This is how I (and a lot of people) define it.
Proshipping is anti-censorship. It says nothing about being unable to criticize said media. It says nothing about romanticizing, normalizing, sexualizing, etc. It only means "you shouldn't ban and persecute artists and those who consume their art."
That being said, there is nothing inherently wrong with having fantasies, no matter how dark and taboo. Thoughts are not actions. Literature will not "poison" the mind or the soul. "Getting off" on dark content is not a sin. These fears and talking points are steeped in conservative Christian values. Perhaps you are a conservative/Christian, but that has nothing to do with me, or with anyone else.
Allowing "bad" content to exist doesn't mean you can't criticize it. The problem is, many antis seem to think stalking, harassing, and doxxing someone until they disappear off social media is the socially acceptable way to criticize fellow fans and artists.
By stating proshippers don't want you to criticize or scrutinize anything, you either don't know what proshipping is, or you're moving the goalpost.
"Antis are trying to cancel me!" We aren't afraid of antis cancelling us. We're afraid of being stalked, harassed, having our workplaces called on us and accusing us of being predators, etc. (Yes, this does happen, I have real world examples of it). I don't think you realize what a toxic, unsafe environment fandom has become because of this fanatical obsession with "good behavior" when it comes to literature.
How do you define romanticize? Who gets to decide what is romanticizing and what isn't? What if you think I'm romanticizing something, while I believe I'm writing it in a non-romantic way? Who gets the final say?
"Authors need to be watched" Authors are not here to teach you moral lessons, let alone need to be watched (whatever the hell that means). If you want moral lessons, go to church. I'm not being facetious. If you want your literature to "teach right from wrong" (and I say that very generously because I'm no longer religious), then controlling authors is not the way.
"We're not against dark subjects, we're against romanticizing and getting off on it." Got it. No one is allowed to be horny from sinful fantasies.
"So long as they only do it behind close doors and doesn't effect me I don't see the problem" I'm not sure what you find wrong with this statement. What do you care what consenting adults do behind closed doors? These talking points you're coming up with are reminiscent of right-wing, historically anti-queer language. Whether intentionally or not.
"We're not against writing/exploring dark topics!" That's. That's exactly what antis are against. Because they can't agree on HOW to explore those topics "tastefully" or "correctly." They can't even agree amongst themselves what content is problematic. It's a goddamn train wreck of hypocrisy.
I know exactly why antis think they way they do. I was Mormon once. You don't get more pro-censorship, thought-policing than that. So, yes, I have years of personal history and critical thinking when it comes to considering the media I consume. Don't worry about me, I'm doing just fine.
What I worry about are young people growing up in this environment where fantasies aren't only considered sinful, they're considered harmful, and they're being told to purge them from their thoughts if they want to be a good person. I can't even begin to describe how harmful that is to children and adults alike.
Do not let the antishippers find the Got or House of the Dragon fandom cause they'll cry
Or Labyrinth, or Flowers in the Attic, or any one of Stephen King's books. It's almost as if the wider public understands that fiction can be both fucked up and entertaining without the need for a moral lesson following after, or that it's an indictment that you're going to partake in the things you read about.
Antis are so far removed from reality, and they have to remain that way in order to not have their beliefs constantly challenged and torn apart.

1/Sorry it's been a day since you answered, I'm not following you I just saw your vent post in the "proship" tag and felt like responding. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the link it all looks like stuff from 2010, I will admit I'm kind of blind when I'm looking for things though. When I responded originally I only scrolled through your tumblr although this is from a different PC hopefully my writing style helps convey that I'm the same person. From what I read through your blog at the time
It's some kind of Sailor Moon discourse. I won't lie I've seen only about 3 episodes of Sailor Moon on VHS in my life, I'm sure it's a good show but I know nothing of the discourse or the fandom. I hate to see people be harassed into losing the love for their ships though. You don't have to believe me and I can't really help you either but I do hope you find some closure someday, even if you have to in some similar ship with a different name. I won't send anymore asks, I wish you the best.
Ah, I see. I was mistaken after all.
I'm sorry about that. People have been impersonating me in asks to stir up campaigns against me (retconning an anon they identified as someone else, no less) in blocklists (even when they reblogged my content first and I blocked them after changing my mind about blocking) . The same people who do this reblog pro-ship arguments while making money from their Tumblrs, collecting money in the process of harassing me.
So maybe it was just because if the timing, and I was very, very sleepy when I wrote that past post, so let me explain from the beginning.
Over the years, I have had multiple fiends take issue with me. Instead of blocking me and leaving me alone, as they claim, instead they continue to passively harass me by talking about me and spreading lies about me. Whereas they claim to block and move on, in many instances, instead of blocking me (which is bad enough) and going on their merry way, they go out of their way to make up lies about me. If you don't to have anything to do with me, why even mention me ? If you want to leave me alone, then you shouldn't say anything about me because you want nothing to do with me Why go any further to use your influence with your followers against me if you want me to leave you alone? Moving on means you don't get to say anything about someone you don't want to be bothered with, and to do otherwise is harassing the blocked person behind their back.
What I linked to was an example of this. Fake folk who supposedly want nothing to do with me talking up a storm about me. Talking about me publicly is engagement and a call to harass me, no different from antis putting proshippers on blocklists. Over the years, webcomics creators, professional writers and translators, and influential voices of all sorts that claim to be proship and anti censorship take down my creations. I have been targeted and no one comes to my aid, no one uplifts my voice, and no one gives me support.
About the Sailor Moon community, they basically did what antis would love to do with problematic material, which is erase it and re-release the show without the problematic elements. If you watched Sailor Moon in the 90's on VHS, the Sailor Moon community has completely, officially reformed Sailor Moon so that it is less problematic. The version that was on VHS and the Sailor Moon that own is not the same show that has been airing digitally on Hulu or aired in theatres, but Sailor Moon fans have pretended it is the same thing. Thus the current Sailor Moon fandom isn't a fan of the real Sailor Moon that aired in the 90's but the new version that uses the 90's animation.
So, no, there will be no closure, as people have not only resolved to not read anything I write, but come together to prevent people from reading anything I write. No, there won't be someone will enjoy my content and come together based on what I created because these people have made sure I will have no audience. No pairing of mine will be known, so there's no use of writing. There will never be closure as long as I live, but that's fine. Living is fighting, and as long as I fight, I am alive.

You interacted with me with my post to call me a racist based on lies and the sole fact that you disagree with me. That I explained to you precisely how I felt and you still decide to erase what I wrote instead of actually listening and accepting my words at the value are they are written shows that you act like an anti. You determine something is "unacceptable" and then you harass, insult, and send hate to people to "fix" it instead of trying review the context of their words.
where is the hate you claim that goes around?
Your post is full of that hate, dismissal, and infantilization. You claim it's "entitlement" to treat anyone with the bare minimum of respect, but funny, you haven't treated anyone else you interacted with like me. That means you targeted your hate to me. I've got news for you. You wishing me dead by treating me awfully instead of as an equal isn't going to make my demise happen any faster.
By the way, cultural appropriation isn't always as you described. Wearing braids if you are white, for instance, can be considered cultural appropriation just on the act alone. The same is true of the "space buns" and the stunts Miley Cyrus pulled a few years back. It doesn't have to be claiming to be the originator of a style. Dressing up in legitimate culturally Roma attire -- even in a non-stereotypical and "respectful" way -- is still appropriation. In these cases one is centering oneself in the experiences of others.
There's a sentiment summed up in a quote with an attribution that being amazingly scrubbed from the Internet. "Racism won't end until white people see it as a problem to fix instead of something to empathize with." That alone explains why "empathy" is self-serving, especially when it comes to different cultures. You can't understand, and using kids' fiction to empathize is dangerously presumptive. This applies if you are an non-Japanese national of any ethnicity trying to relate to Japanese culture through anime.
That said, there is no cultural appropriation in the 90's dub of Sailor Moon when Toei (the Japanese company that made the anime) not only approved the changes DiC but actually became the distributor after the license with DiC ended and kept as many changes as it could for future episodes. When a change is approved by the rights holder such as TOEI, it isn't cultural appropriation, but localization.
And it's not cultural appropriation when fans interact with the material in the same way to adapt material to their culture, because fandom is generally supposed to be for fun, not for profit, and not the minefield of "is this problematic?" Funny, that's the proshipper position, to live and let live...yes, so many so-called proshippers like yourself want to police the fandom into interacting in what you term as correct.
You can "ignore" me all you want, but you have lied about me, about cultural appropriation, and even about what is hate. For instance, in Japan, it is a societal expectation for those teenagers who are attracted to the same gender to eventually grow out of it; that's the reason behind some of the LesYay moments in the old anime to show how immature these girls still are. Harmuichi is transgressive because it DEFIES that expectation, but it doesn't change that it's a cultural thing to treat schoolgirl lesbians as "puppy love" so someone making a comment that Michiru would grow out of it is a cultural comment.
But you're determined to dismiss me and make me a non-person anyway, no matter how many sources I provide to support my argument. You're the one putting me in a box over my protestations with only your own opinion backing up the decision to do so. That is closed-minded, damaging, and hurtful. I only wish you would treat me with the same respect as any other fan you communicate with, but that wish will never be granted because of your bias.
I guess another reason why this anti/proship debate has spurred me to write so long about it is because so many of the big name Sailor Moon blogs proclaim to be proshippers.
Many Sailor Moon fans are acting like I am anti and that I police people's use of work. But the reality is, for the past, oh 30, years, since the franchise's inception, Internet fans have acted as fanpols in the Sailor Moon community
You see about 30 years ago, Sailor Moon aired on American and Canadian TV. Sailor Moon is an old anime. It was the story of Serena and her friends and it was awesome,
However internet fanpols wouldn't have it. They would go on campaigns to "educate" fans about Sailor Moon and how she wasn't really Serena even though she was called that in the dialogue. They went on campaigns to mock people who did not use the names found either in the Japanese language version of the anime or in the manga.
I argued then that as I argued now, that author intent is pointless, and that the character shouldn't be seen the "correct" way aside from that was portrayed in the episodes themselves, and that people should be allowed to see the characters "incorrectly." For instance, one of the characters was female, but in the Japanese version, this character was male. The argument was that because that character was assigned a gender, they had to stay that gender and that no other way of looking at the character was allowed. It was your standard TERF arguments applied against fictional characters. My argument was that it didn't matter what the gender character was assigned but how the character was displayed and there was nothing wrong with seeing this character as female.
The end result of all this fanpol interference is that they won. The Sailor Moon that actually aired on TV over 20 years is completely unavailable from a legal standpoint. It has gotten so bad that people have watched the new Sailor Moon episodes and reporting remembering seeing these episode as kids.
Now that those fans got what they wanted and not only erased decades of precedent they want to claim they are proship. Not when you harassed fan artists who dared give Neptune or Uranus male love interests, when you laughed at fan theories, and most importantly, you made fans of the actual Sailor Moon they watched on TV feel unwelcome because they didn't like Sailor Moon the "correct" way.
