One of the things I do with my students is owl pellet dissection to identify the small rodents and occasional birds contained within. I have two big sacks of the things, from two different sites. As one of their assessments, they analyse a set number of pellets each, then share their data to get a bigger dataset, then discuss the biodiversity difference between the two sites. All good and fun. One of them once took home a bird skull and made it into a necklace.

Here is the sticky part: the database where they share their data.

Now, I am currently using an Excel spreadsheet that I host on my work OneDrive, which I share to Moodle and allow editing access. This means I format the spreadsheet, then they can access and add their data. Central place, they can easily copy and paste the data into their own Excel file to manipulate as they want, and I can see who has uploaded and who hasn't; for each pellet, one column asks for their name, and then the others list the potential organisms and they simply number how many of each they found. Boom. Easy.

BUT, it carries the inherent risk of one of my intelligent, capable and highly skilled students accidentally deleting/overwriting other people's entries in a moment of digital clumsiness and stupidity. This year, one of them forgot it was the shared document, and so did all the data analysis in it where everyone could see/plagiarise. This is Not Ideal.

So, I'm looking for some sort of digital tool that I can use, very preferably link to Moodle for easy access, will allow the students to download the whole collaborated dataset, and won't let them delete anyone else's entries. It also needs to be free. It doesn't need to do anything fancy - they can download into Excel if they want to manipulate it. I just want an easy central repository for this data.

im going to be honest i got the highest storage knowing how much i draw and yet my ipad is strugggggling but generally just upload ur procreate files and png/jpegs to an external drive (like google drive or dropbox or onedrive whatever) and then when ur sure its there then delete it from ur procreate. also make sure nothing else is running in the bg and try to free up space from other apps

hi! thanks so much for asking! here are my favorite methods for sharing notes between devices :). i personally have apple devices so i can fairly easily airdrop and sync things between devices, but i also frequently work at the library desktop computers where i can't do that! so here's my tips and tricks for sharing notes between devices

for context: i've been mostly doing digital notetaking recently, but i also like to scan my paper notes as well!

i'm going to be dividing this post into 2 methods! (there will be some overlap). syncing already written notes and syncing notes (in progress) between devices

for already written notes:

the first step i would take is export your notes as a pdf or any other file type. if they're handwritten try going into your notes app (for ios) or downloading a pdf scanner app for your phone! if your notes are digital check the sharing options in your app to see if there's anything about "exporting".

personally, i like to use either discord or notion. i have created a discord server with only myself that i use just for sharing links/files/anything between devices! i like discord because there's apps for pc, mac, tablets, and phones; and even a web app! discord is really nice and fast, and you can make different channels (as pictured below) for organization. as long as your file size isn't too big, you should be fine.

my second app i like to use is notion! notion is such a beast in itself, but i like to use it to upload files and images and links! below are two ways i have used it: to upload pdfs/files, and to upload goodnotes (my notetaking app) links to the pages i'm writing on! similar to discord, notion has apps for all devices, but it also works great just by itself on the website (no app required)! it's really great to access it from all my devices.

another way you could share your notes on different devices is through the cloud! (yes, discord and notion are both through the cloud). google drive, microsoft onedrive, icloud storage, etc. are great tools that you can use to upload files and see on multiple devices. i personally like discord and notion more, just because they're already apps i frequently use, but if you can't get either one cloud-based storage platforms are also a great idea! they definitely have more security than discord or notion, because your files may be at risk of being deleted!

for the purposes of sharing notes to reference on another device when writing an essay, or something of similar vain, i really love discord and/or notion and they both work great!

for syncing notes in real time:

pretty similar to the last one, i would say notion or google docs (or microsoft word on the web i believe has similar functionality, or onenote, anything similar!)

if you want to be writing notes on one device and have them sync up quickly on another - i think any word processing software is the best bet for you.

both notion and google docs you can access them on any device, and/or on their websites too!

google docs is a lot more straightforward, but since notion is so powerful it provides a lot of flexibility for your notes! here's an (old) example of notes i've taken on notion. (i personally really like how easy it is to make columns!)

I guess this is kind of obvious and not really worth pointing out to my more techy followers, but I'm just thinking about how Microsoft, Apple, and Google have a lot of competing duplicates of similar basic apps (browser, cloud storage, documents, calendar, maps, etc.) that come pre-installed on their respective devices and sync your data with the other apps by the same company.

I guess each of them wants to be your Main Tech Company, where you do all your stuff through them, and all your stuff is saved in one convenient account.

Is it common for people to actually do things this way? I guess one limitation is that Microsoft doesn't make phones, and Google doesn't make full-service laptops.

My stuff is just kind of a hodgepodge of what I started using naturally. I have an iPhone and a Windows laptop. Most of my files are in OneDrive, because my laptop uploads them automatically, but I also have some other random things in Google Drive. I use Apple Notes because I often need or want to write some quick note to myself when I'm outside with just my phone, and that's what came with my phone. It also syncs super quickly which is helpful. I've had a Gmail account since I was 14, and I use Google Calendar and Google Maps.

At work, my coworker (who is basically training me to take over her position when she retires in the next few years) has to run several reports.

One of them involves frankensteining three different other reports/sources into one excel document and having links and references and formulas and pivot tables because of the information requested and being tracked. It’s a huge file/report.

Because of where we work, and the underinvestment in tech and other tools, this is the only really centralized place for this set of data. And it still requires updates be made by different teams and divisions, which get compiled by sending out a very scaled down version of the report with the bare minimum open and available and, most importantly, as an excel file attachment and not as a link to the full report or document (partly because of data and access issues and partly because the full report even as an email attachment was crashing people’s stuff) and v-looked up etc after.

The overall team director has been pushing my coworker to make this file uploaded to onedrive/sharepoint and made so that people could enter their updates/comments directly into it, and so that said director could access it or whatever “if she needed to” aka it’s about micromanaging and not being comfortable with so few people who understand and can access and update the info, part of which is somewhat understandable.

A meeting was held this week to “discuss the pros and cons” of this, and my coworker and I discussed and came up with various reasons why it would be a lateral transfer of work at best (and realistically more work for everyone involved except for said director) like we were asked to.

It became very clear very quickly that almost nothing we could have said would have changed anything. As soon as the director began talking about how this tracker they use and have in onedrive was “life-changing” we knew we might as well save our breaths unless we absolutely needed to push back on something, and even then it was downplayed. The director was relentless in that really obnoxious positive insincere way. Also, for reference, the tracker that was life-changing has far less data, links, formulas, etc and is purely just people entering stuff into cells. It was not apples to apples.

So now we’re tasked with over the next two weeks or so in figuring out how to implement this shift. And how we communicate it to the rest of the office.

Keep in mind that Onedrive is finicky sometimes, and there's a chance you won't be able to see the streamed episodes and you may have to download them. Sadly we have no idea why this happens, and sadly we don't really have any other alternative to upload so many files (there's over 1TB of Hamtaro episodes in there!) that also allows for a streaming option.

I figured I'd do a little tutorial on how I use and edit HDR captures from my Xbox Series X. This is mostly to show off how silly this is. Also it might help. Me? Other people? Who knows.

First step is getting the captures.

This requires the use of Microsoft's OneDrive. You send the captures to your OneDrive and in return you will receive two files, a PNG and a JXR. The PNG is the base image, the JXR holds all the tone data for the HDR. Download both.

Now it's editing time.

My program of choice is GIMP 2.8. Normally it can't read JXR files but there is a plug in. It works and that is all that matters. First open the PNG and then add the JXR as an addition layer on top. Make sure it's lined up right. Then set the JXR layer mode to Overlay. And then that's it, just rotate and crop as needed.

I also crop at a 2:3 ratio out of habit since the old post editor used to screw up the image if it was too long, new one doesn't seem to have that issue.

Specifically to tumblr, I like to use portrait layouts because they show up better on scrolly things, like phones. It's entirely subjective. Then just upload as normal and hope that it was the right time and the right day, because if you are trying for notes on here you have a better chance of throwing a dart and hitting the moon.

This is a how to, not a how you should do. I have this method out of trial and error because I got nothing else to work. The results are comparable to in-game HDR and 99% of the time it works flawlessly. The only issue I have is it makes images darker, so sometimes it's too dark and you have to adjust the brightness on both layers.

Hi, i'm not sure, because Chn's verification methods are getting stricter The easiest thing i can think of is that you try to enter Baidu with your WeChat or Weibo account

The other less secure option, that i know it worked a year or two ago, is to use a borrowed number to receive sms, there are many pages for that purpose (you can search for it as sms phone, temporary phone, verification number, etc.) however it is difficult to find numbers that have not already been used for that, in addition, the account is a bit exposed because they are public and the sms received too, and there are times that it doesn't work because the system detects that they are a risk and asks you to call directly

You can find more methods, such as using vpn, downloading apps, or trying to register on different Baidu pages, but, as i said before, the measures are getting stricter and nothing guarantees that they will work

There are also some creators that offer to upload it to Simfileshare or Onedrive for foreigners if you contact them, but they are very few…
