i realize this looks finished, but technically i'm still deciding whether to add a background or not lol. still, for the sake of sharing a proper WIP, here's a line or two from an araleyn brainworm WIP that i started reworking yesterday (mild tw for religious guilt and period-typical internalized homophobia from aragon's pov):

She remembers sharing her bed with Anne at Henry's behest, remembers the nights of tossing and turning and trying not to think about Anne asleep next to her-- remembers waking up to dark hair spilling across her pillow and the press of blood-warm bosoms against her own, softer than sin, as hot as the Devil, remembers lying still as death, mouthing prayers into the heat of Anne's neck like an act of penance.

it really is hilarious how little objective quality has to do with how much I'll love an RPG. larian makes games that are objectively very good, but don't really resonate with me personally when I play them, for whatever reason. bioware makes games of wildly erratic levels of quality that cause my soul to vibrate at pitches heard only by dolphins and god.

Sort of a distant tangent off my post about Ashton, but I'm growing more and more suspicious of the fandom claim that there's no time for small RP moments in Campaign 3. I do think that it's been challenging to get deeper party bonding or serious conversations that aren't about the big philosophical questions they're facing, since those do take much more time; but then I think about Calamity, or Candela Obscura. I can genuinely give you at least a couple paragraphs about pretty much every relationship in the two Circles, or in the Ring of Brass. I can also point to no shortage of small moments between characters in the Mighty Nein Aeor or Vox Machina Vecna endgame episodes, which were all extremely plot-heavy and fast-paced, and D20 consistently nails character relationships in a fraction of the time.

I think it really does come down to, as Brennan Lee Mulligan always says, the character creation phase. Laying down a solid groundwork in which everyone has a detailed, rich backstory and sense of personality and relationship history (in the case of characters who knew each other prior to the start of the series) is absolutely crucial, and even in the case of characters who don't know each other before going in, a good amount of time spent in character creation ensures that it's easier for them to develop those interpersonal relationships on the fly. I know in actual play there's some degree of finding the character as you play, but there are games for which there is a very short runway, and I don't think it ever hurts to do more extensive character prep than the bare minimum. And if there are gaps, I think it also helps to go back and fill those in mid-way, away from the table - Travis clarifying Chetney's backstory being a great example that allowed the history of Chetney and Deanna to feel realized and full, despite only a few episodes.

I'll also be blunt: most of the time when people complain that there aren't moments because the plot keeps moving...they're mad about shipping. Which has always rung hollow to me. It was a common complaint in C2, that no time was taken for character relationships, despite them taking an entire half of an episode for the Beauyasha date and despite no shortage of moments for all three of the other couples (and plenty of platonic moments between friends). The issue was never a lack of time; it was that the characters they wanted to talk to each other didn't actually have the relationship in canon that the fans had dreamed up, and so, when the chips were down, they went to other people.

It takes two seconds to say something like "I hold their hand", even in the middle of plot-heavy adventuring. If someone doesn't say it, it's rarely the GM rushing them; it's the player either choosing not to do so, or not remembering to do so, and either of those is quite revealing regarding how the player feels about that relationship and where it stands in their priorities.

Finally played bg3 and decided to hop back onto tumblr after almost a year away to see what all the hot takes are and well....it doesn't surprise me that Astarion x Gale is such a popular ship. It definitely gives me typical two white men ship that the straight girls like.

come to think of it another reason I'm biased towards nine might be because we never reach such beautiful casual queer vibes as the doctor + rose + jack situation again, at least not as far as I've watched. like I'm honestly not that much of a shipper but that kiss scene DOES things to me. and part of that is how loosely defined the relationship seems to be, at least maybe from jack's perspective. I can't rightly say it was wholly romantic in canon, but it sure was something - yes, rose flirted with jack way more than the doctor did when they first met, but the doctor even just being chill about jack kissing him feels significant - and I do love a quasi-romantic loosely-defined Something.

you know, for all the flack the fanon side of the fandom gets, I feel like once you filter out the drama and discourse, you do end up with some of the most chill people. like, we're all just kids playing in the sandbox with our beloved dolls in a way we see fit, and I think that's super neat.

Those relationships where the characters are amicable exes who broke it off bc one or both had their respective traumas/emotional burdens they didn't want the other to feel responsible for, so they ended up repressing it all to the point where the distance that began to grow between them as a result was too insurmountable that they decided it was best to end things so, in their minds, the other could be free to pursue happiness without being 'burdened' by them. But both are even now still so very much in love with each other or at the very least hold a tender fondness and particularly Special protectiveness for each other that everyone can clearly see, no matter how much the two deny or brush it off by saying it would have never worked out in the end ( oh, but it COULD, it WOULD have if only they'd decided to TALK to each other, to be VULNERABLE with each other instead of just calling it quits ), despite every What If and If Only that crosses their minds every time their eyes meet.

Every time they see their longing mirrored in the other's eyes.

Coldplay - Yellow (Lyrics) by Authentic Music

Got reminded of this song's existence recently while cleaning my room listening to alt rock last Saturday, and after having listened to it a couple of times, I have feelings about it. Specifically, I have Victor/Smiler (aka Van Alton) feelings about it! Now, this is probably at least partly because the song is called "Yellow" and I am Legally Obligated to link anything yellow with Smiler these days, but I do think this works as a ship song for them. The specific situation I'm thinking of is Victor being pleasantly overwhelmed by how awesome Smiler is and how much he loves them -- just watching them be their bright, sunny self and being like "I would do anything for you to keep seeing that smile." :) Especially since a lot of my Valicer AUs where Victor and Smiler get together first feature them having to hide their relationship from their parents and not being as free and open with it as they'd like. The second set of lyrics seems to fit that particular scenario best, in fact -- all the stuff about "swimming across" and "jumping across" and drawing a line for them makes me think of the pair from my Soulmates AU who ran away rather than let the elder Van Dorts and Dr. Kelman separate them. They certainly did draw their line in the sand there!

But yeah -- just some nice, soft, classic Coldplay giving me the feels about my favorite Victorian noodle and his sunshine enby partner. :) Hope you enjoy!

hey uh sorry for disappearing yet again for a couple months. don't have much of an excuse, though things have been more stressful than usual, offline life having involved family and hospitals and stuff, but not gonna go into any details, things are better now either way so ye. my way of coping with things have been mostly to just play games (ffxiv mainly, leveling alts and other grinding can be a good distraction sometimes) and nothing else to keep my mind off things, so haven't been able to focus enough to do much of any art at all. I am hoping to get back into the swing of things, I am back on my meds that I skipped out on for like a year due to various reasons, but they seem to be helping again so yeah, fingers crossed that things will work out and such ha

I do think icebeast is like. Not something with potential in the current era but Bobby’s nebulous age makes things so weird like the peak was those of comics where they’re always going on dates together and disappearing when the lights go out when Bobby was ~16 and Hank was ~18 but they really seem to want to make Bobby younger retroactively (and probably Hank a little older too, like compared to jean and Scott). It makes shipping them frustrating

That's a fair enough concern anon, honestly Bobby definitely has one of the strangest ages in comics, like he's not quite as bizarre as whatever Franklin and Val have going on or Kitty and Jubilee but he definitely has a weird one... like again I do think IceBeast is definitely in the text and I think writers would really benefit for admitting Bobby had a crush on him. Also, I think that while Hank is maybe not as unattainable as literal angel Warren, he still is very much so a private crush / fantasy from the best friend thing, and the fact that he's the oldest of the 5. But yeah it is kind of weird how Bobby has shifted from being a kind of childish 16 year old to being more like 14 or maybe even 13 with how fans and writers and artists talk about and depict him in those early days and recontextualises that dynamic into being more one-sided than it might have initially been.
