Very obsessed with the way Monopolis is talked about in Starmania

Like, Monopolis meaning the One city, the Only city, when we know for a fact that it is a sprawling city, that it is expending all over the country - according to Sadia at least

Add the fact that Monopolis is the very first “character” that is introduced to us. Before anything else, before we can find out about the characters or the story, the very first thing we learn is that everything happens in Monopolis. There is no escape from it, there is no way for the characters to exist outside of it, no story can take place beyond the borders of the city - assuming there even are borders

Love love love the implication that there is nowhere else to go; Johnny and Cristal want to leave, they want to find a no man’s land, and it doesn’t exist. There isn’t a place that is not the city, because it is everywhere, it’s the only thing there is left

Also, call me a nerd, but the way it’s just called “la ville” by various characters reminds me a lot of how Rome was called Urbs (City in latin). Like. There is only One City. We don’t need to add anything else, because there is only one place that truly matters. It’s driving me insane

Johnny loves Ziggy, the way you love a song.

He is music trapped in a human body. He's bright and bold, and, to Johnny only, soft in the way only a serenade can be.

Loving him is easy. They sing in the clubs Ziggy loves so much, until the morning comes, and kiss in dark alleys. They talk in the underground café, drinking until neither of them walks straight and Marie-Jeanne has to kick them out. They share secrets and labored breaths, alone at night.

Their love is an escape from the mess that Monopolis has become, one they both swore to keep a secret.

Johnny loves Sadia, the way you love the ocean.

She is a hurricane of passion and determination, ready to sacrifice anything to get what she wants, impetuous as waves crashing down.

Loving her is thrilling. They dance around bullets, laughter erupting in the middle of gunshots. They talk about their schemes for the étoiles noires' operation, voices rising in excitement as they figure out what had been wrong with the previous plan. There is passion in everything they do, from rioting to kissing to fucking; they even dream too big for themself, but, it feels just right, to imagine a world, their world, one where they can both walk under the sun.

Their love is a strange harmony, born from their mutual chaos, to be shouted over rooftops.

Johnny loves Cristal, the way you love the Sun.

She is warm as a candlelight, smart and witty. She might seems naive, but Johnny knows she can be harsh and impulsive, like fire catching.

Loving her is heavenly. They plan for what is to come - overthrowing Zero Janvier, sure, but even after that. They talk about their lives, their past, and it feels like fate brought them together.

Their love is a door open on a brighter future, a dream come true.

Johnny has loved Ziggy. He has loved Sadia. He has loved Cristal.

Cristal is dying, right there, in his arms, because he failed to protect her from the violence he brought her in.

Sadia has played him, right from the start, left him, and everything they believed in - or so he thought.

Ziggy followed the dream Johnny couldn't believe in, built something else, a life with no room for the boy who abandoned him - no room for anyone, really, if what he heard about MJ is true.

And Johnny knows he has lost everyone he has ever loved.

Call him selfish if you will, but he's almost glad when the bomb goes off.

I had some Thoughts about Sadia recently, and more specifically about the 2022 version of the character

(some spoilers about the 2022 version under the cut)

I think it’s really interesting that Sadia is the one who kills Cristal in this version. Think about it, Sadia is always standing in someone’s shadow, her actions are never her own. She makes decisions, sure, but she’s always watching things happen instead of doing them herself. Her agency is always secondary, she’s either standing behind Johnny or behind Zéro, and whenever she tries to make something happen or make a decision in her own name, she’s turned down, either by Johnny (right before the interview) or Cristal (during Coup d’éclat). 

And in the end, the first and only action she truly takes, is to kill Cristal, even though she already sent Zéro’s guards after them. But she kills Cristal (why exactly? I couldn’t tell you, my interpretation of it changes everyday to be honest) and it sets off the chain of events that eventually kills them all. 

She’s erased from the narrative by everyone around her, until finally, finally, she snaps, resulting in everyone being erased from the narrative. She truly is one of the most destructive characters in that show.

I love her so much. She never did anything wrong.
